The White House Correspondents Dinner
President Obama received good reviews for his speech at his first White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, where he poked fun at himself, the media, Vice President Biden and others.
"Tomorrow is Mother’s Day," the president said. "This is a tough holiday for Rahm [Emanuel]. He’s not used to saying the word ‘day’ after ‘mother.’"
“David Axelrod is here," the president continued. "We’ve been together a long time. I can still remember when I called Ax a few years ago and said, ‘You and I can do wonderful things together.” And he said to me the same thing that partners across America are saying to one another right now: ‘Let’s go to Iowa and make it official.’"
Comedian Wanda Sykes poked a little fun at the Obamas and others.

I liked the jokes about Michael Steele and the GOP not qualifying for a bailout. Not so much on the Rush Limbaugh jokes from Sykes, even though he’s said much worse on many occasion.

McCain and Palin get criticized for letting the hate get spoken at their campaign rallies, but it’s ok for Sykes to wish death on Rush Limbaugh.
I just don’t get it.

The jokes about Biden giving up info without being tortured was funny.
But too bad Biden is being made to look like a fool when Barry makes just as many gaffes.
Examples: 57 states, 10,000 killed in tornado, I see fallen soldiers in the crowd today, cinco de cuatro,walking into windows…

What a riot Wanda Sykes was at this dinner! She did what no republican or Murdoch-owned media has done–she took on Rush Limbaugh and was right on with her comments about him being a traitor, abusing Oxycontin and hoping Obama and the economic agenda fail! As Rush is nothing more than a comedic blowhard for the right, this could not have been more appropriate. Hail to the Chief! Hail to Wanda Sykes!

Wanda Sykes went way over the line. Not funny. And I can’t stand Limbaugh.
I thought this was supposed to be lighthearted fun? What a mean-spirited person she is.
But then I never found Sykes to be funny anyway. Foul-mouthed and funny is possible, she just hasn’t mastered the funny part.

I liked the teleprompter jokes, the Biden and Clinton jokes, the Sasha and Malia joyride joke, the “What’s up” jokes with Steele and Boehner, the jokes about the next 100 days. We are very lucky to have him as our president! I thought he should do a joke where he spoke like the SNL character who imitates him. I agree that Wanda S. went over the top with the Rush jokes. They were too real, which doesn’t necessarily make it funny, more uncomfortable. There is so much material out there to joke about. They should have asked John Stewart to do the roast.

Right “I didn’t vote for him” — he should have broken a nearly century-old tradition to stay home and work on the economy. The right-wingers cannot be taken seriously when all they do is respond with such anger and vitriol to even a night of harmless fun. Obama could cure cancer and you would say he was taking money away from mortuaries. What a bunch of malcontents. Were you upset when your president spoke at these things for eight years while Rome was burning? Yeah, I doubt it.

The 9/11 joke went too far.
Reminds me of the vile stuff on liberal blogs.
There are plenty of funny things to say about Rush but suggesting he would have been the 20th hijacker–tying that into his addiction to painkillers…
This is America now.
More hateful and more divided.

The Prez was great. Smooth delivery and a humble ability to poke fun at himself. Sykes was dead-on. Foul or not, the last person who needs to be spewing filth is a hypocrite like Limbaugh for the exact reason she mentioned.

I am stunned that our President should use such bad taste in putting “Mother’s Day” and his remark about “Rahm” in the same sentence. I am sure Mother’s around the world will be offended just like I am. How does he explain that joke to his children….

“The Steele joke, I laughed, groaned, then wondered what would’ve happened to some one like Rush had they made that same crack.”
First time you’ve seen a black man make a joke about another black man? Ever heard an Irishman joke about the Irish? Ever heard a Jewish comedian joke about Jews? (Or did you think Rush is black. He’s not.)
As for Wanda Sykes, she dialed it WAAAAY back. Whoever booked her for this gig presumably knew who she was, right? But then somebody once thought booking Don Imus for the WHCA dinner was a good idea. (For the record, I thought she was funny, but, yeah, she went over the top a few times. That’s what she does.)

Well it likes like TOTUS didn’t fail POTUS last night, lucky for him. The Comrade in Chief is leading the sheep to the slaughter. Every day he and his cronies get his way is one step closer to socialism/fascism in this country. This is a democratic republic NOT a democracy like Comrade Obama likes to spew. He is a representative of both the majority AND minority but doesn’t show it. Nor do those in office. They all took an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States and have done nothing but drag it through the mud since being in office. This goes for former President DUH as well.

The entire skit from Sykes was hilarious. Some more highlights were “Get in the car with the STRANGERS!” and “I could break Hannity by giving him a middle-seat in coach”.
But the most brilliant part is that which is being played out right now: the rightwingers who can dish it but who can’t take it.
What goes around, comes around.

The economy is in shambles, Obama’s army just killed scores of innocent civilians in Afghanistan, the jobless rate has hit a 25-year high and the liberal media wants to be entertained? Hypocrites – do your job. Learn to criticize the president for what he is not doing. It may be too late now, but when the country goes down in smoke, let’s remember to blame the cozy liberal media.

I think it’s great for Press and Politicians to have a night together to laugh. It shows a certain civility.
But it seems like it’s become a way for press people to meet their favorite celebrities. I don’t like that.

Obama openly mocked the media by saying they voted for him (except Fox).
Though probably true, it sure wasn’t a compliment to suggest the media is that far in the tank for him.
Most fair-minded Americans would prefer an objective media–not the one in love with Obama.
I think it shows Obama’s underlying contempt for them–how can you respect a doormat?

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is a place for the press to kiss up to and be kissed up to by their very favorite people in the whole world: the people they are supposed to cover. I am a die-hard Democrat who loves Obama and I think the same thing this year that I did last year, when Bush was the object of their flattery: our press is thoroughly corrupted by their desire to gain and maintain the favor of famous people and celebrities. These people (the press) are depraved. Think about it–why can’t they have their own party, invite only their members (in the press), give out their own awards, roast each other, drink too much and have fun? That’s what NORMAL people do. Unfortunately, our press corps is filled with celebrity-obsessed imbeciles who CANNOT write and file real, hard, independently-researched news. I hope they all go into bankruptcy.

Like many others, Wanda Sykes suffers from selective hearing. What Limbaugh said was that “if Obama is moving the country towards socialism, he hopes that the president fails”. I have to agree with Rush, (although I am not a fan). I have worked as a consultant to many manufacturers over the years. I know for a fact that if Obama drives up the cost of doing business in the U.S. as a result of his labor, energy and tax policies, manufacturers will leave the U.S. in droves. This used to bother me, but know I take the attitude that this is what the fools in this country voted for. Let them loose their work and be dependent on The One for their sustenance. This is what the administration’s goal is in any event: to create more dependence on government and to enjoy greater control over the people as a result. People who don’t see this need to look more closely.

The continous harping on what he has inherited from Bush would only be laughed at in a room full of lapdog media shills.
I actually cringed when I heard him using his little girls as a punchline to the NYC flyover. We still don’t have the truth about what happened. Using the Scare Force One debacle to accuse (even in jest) his daughters of misbehavior and to involve his daughters at all in something this surreptitious seems very wrong.
I also thought the Mother’s Day joke was in very poor taste.
That’s when I stopped watching.

It was alright for W to send over 4000 of our brightest young men and woman to be killed in a war that should never have been but now they are accusing President Obama of people getting killedin Afganistan….how quickly they forget. Judging by the many comments, one needs no more evidence that the nutcase wing of the GOP is alarmingly unable to understand such complex (for them) concepts like irony and uh, HUMOR. If they had bothered to watch ANY correspondent dinner in the past, they would know what the evening is about. So, back to the “edgy” “Red Eye” on Fox for your brand of humor, kids… Or “Beltway Boys” for some irony…

Most of her skit was OK but a few comments were vile and divisive.
Obama could have risen above the hate and the constant need to blame Bush.
But the “tolerant”liberals in his base thrive on hate, humiliation, and personal attacks.

I enjoy seeing presidents go to these annual events and poke fun at themselves and others. I thought Clinton was good at it and Bush 43 was very good at it. I think Obama did well, too. The joke about Scare Force One was cute, and the Biden jokes were spot on and quite funny. I liked “some of you cover me, and all of you voted for me.”
Do I think the president has an incredibly oversized ego, which shows through even in such a setting? Oh,yes. “On the seventy-third day I will rest” worked as humor for a reason. And you notice that he uses even this entertaining occasion to pat himself and his administration on the back for a long list of “accomplishments” from the first one hundred days. But I’m not going to bash him for that. I accept it for what it is.
Ms. Sykes was a different matter, and I’ll address that later under the post specifically about her that JT has just put up. One thing I always like about these dinners is the mix of guests of every political persuasion and varying levels of fame in the audience. That is something, btw, that I also appreciate about the Obama’s Wednesday WH soirees.

Wow. This is Comedy Gold. Rush said actually “he hopes Obama fails”? Rush is referring to himself in the third person?
ROTFLMAO
What Rush said was this: “Okay, I’ll send you a response, but I don’t need 400 words, I need four: I hope he fails.”

Who is Wanda Sykes?
Posted by: Eric | May 10, 2009, 4:53 pm 4:53 pm
Willem van Oranje, sorry but you are wrong!
The following is an excerpt from Rush Limbaugh’s own website as to what he REALLY said on Jan 16, 2009:
“If I wanted Obama to succeed, I’d be happy the Republicans have laid down. And I would be encouraging Republicans to lay down and support him. Look, what he’s talking about is the absorption of as much of the private sector by the US government as possible, from the banking business, to the mortgage industry, the automobile business, to health care. I do not want the government in charge of all of these things. I don’t want this to work. So I’m thinking of replying to the guy, “Okay, I’ll send you a response, but I don’t need 400 words, I need four: I hope he fails.” (interruption) What are you laughing at? See, here’s the point. Everybody thinks it’s outrageous to say. Look, even my staff, “Oh, you can’t do that.” Why not? Why is it any different, what’s new, what is unfair about my saying I hope liberalism fails? Liberalism is our problem. Liberalism is what’s gotten us dangerously close to the precipice here. Why do I want more of it? I don’t care what the Drive-By story is. I would be honored if the Drive-By Media headlined me all day long: “Limbaugh: I Hope Obama Fails.” Somebody’s gotta say it.
Look up the entire comment!

James Danley, it’s right in there: “I don’t need 400 words, I need four: I hope he fails.”
And anything he or you say doesn’t change that fact. He HOPES he fails. He is such an ideologue that he doesn’t want what’s best for America, he wants what’s best for HIS IDEOLOGY. And his ideology is a big fat tax cut for himself. It that tax cut will lead to the destruction of America, he just doesn’t care: he’s got his big fat tax cut and the rest’ll be damned.

Rush Limbaugh ALSO said that if President Obama lead like President Reagan he would wish him to succeed.
You are wrong when you say that Rush Limbaugh doesn’t want what’s best for America. He wants everyone to achieve the American Dream. He just believes–as do ALL of us Conservatives–that wealth redistribution, socialism, and government control of our lives IS NOT best for America.
As for the tax cuts, the top 5% of the wage earners in America account for 60% of the total federal income tax revenue. The top 25% of the wage earners in America account for 86% of the total federal income tax revenue. That means the bottom 75% of the wage earners in America account for just 14% of the total federal income tax revenue.
It is the middle class that is NOT paying their fair share of the tax burden. Sweden is one of the most liberal welfare states. However, EVERYONE–including the poor–pay AT LEAST 31% in income taxes (state & local) AND pay the national value-added tax of 25% on almost all goods and most services.

According to the lastest IRS statistics, in 2006:
The top 5% of the wage earners in America–6,785,958 individuals making greater than $153,542–reported an aggregate Adjusted Gross Income of $2.978 trillion. That is 36.66% of the total AGI reported. And accounts for 60.14% of total federal income tax revenue generated–a total of $615.680 billion paid in federal income taxes.
The top 25% of the wage earners in America–33,929,790 individuals making greater than $64,702–reported an aggregate AGI of $5.536 trillion. That is 68.16% of the total AGI reported. And accounts for 86.27% of the total federal income tax revenue generated–a total of $883.153 billion paid in federal income taxes.
The top 50% of the wage earners in America–67,859,580 individuals making greater than $31,987–reported an aggregate AGI of $7.106 trillion. That is 87.49% of the total AGI reported. And accounts for 97.01% of the total federal income tax revenue generated–a total of $993.176 billion paid in federal income taxes.
The BOTTOM 50% of the wage earners in America–67,859,580 individuals making LESS than $31,987–reported an aggregate AGI of $1.016 trillion. That is 12.51% of the total AGI reported. Interesting. So for the top 5% earners, $615.68 billion paid / $2,978 billion income = about a 21% real income tax rate.

You have to understand that the federal income tax is a progressive tax. Even multi millionaires pay (current 2009 rates):
10% of their taxable income between $0 to $8,350;
15% of their taxable income between $8,350 and $33,950;
25% of their taxable income between $33,950 and $82,250;
28% of their taxable income between $82,250 and $171,500;
33% of their taxable income between $171,500 and $372,950;
35% of their taxable income between $372,950 and above.

I laughed so much and continue to do so. The kidney joke was really funny. That was less of a threat (just means dialysis for a fat sweating drug addict) versus a threat to our entire country (since Rush wants our country to fail). Let’s see….Rush’s kidneys to fail…..or, our country to fail. The choice is obvious. And no…he should not get new kidneys via transplants — he’s a drug addict, ruined his organs by his own doing, and thus, does not deserve another set.

I couldn’t stand the Republicans for years because of their unfunny sarcasm and hurtful rhetoric; So now the Dems think it’s fine to do the same thing. No, not me — If it’s ugly one place, it’s ugly at another place. This is why I didn’t and would never vote for Obama and his ilk. So where’s the change that I can believe in? Huh?

Anyone who loves freedom, capitalism and smaller Government wants to Obama to fail… so do I. I would rather live a prosperous and FREE life than one that required me to interact with the Government often. I’m not some lunatic extremist, I’m just an ordinary guy that doesn’t want the Government stunting everything I try and do.
Also, I thought Obama was great, but Wanda was terrible. I think its fine to make fun of someone if you’re doing so in an honest way, but she was dishonest and anyone who reads what Rush said (who has half a brain) understands that.

Rush does not deserve any respect. He if anyone crossed the line. To say he hopes the president fails is bad enough but to say what he said about the Prime Minister of England…that he hopes he gets a rectal disease from kissing President Obama’s behind is disgraceful and that is a true statement. Check it out as it was broadcasted on the Rick Sanchez show a few weeks ago when the prime minister was with Obama. No one complained…no one wrote the stations…yet..he can say all he wants and we need to respect him. I think not. To say she has attacked his character is a stretch as he has no character if he can stoop so low as to disrespect a Prime Minister of England.Especially now when President Obama is trying to restore our respect which was lost on an administration he thinks was a good one.

I can’t get enough of these two clips. But, i think Wanda Sykes line about Sarah Palin and Abstinence was the best line of the night, but people were reluctant to laugh about it in public.

Too freaking funny and right on! I am a registered Republican, that said, the conservative wing has hijacked the party. Why don’t they form their own damned party and leave us true republicans alone.

“I wanna know your dreams. And make them mine. I wanna change the world. Only for you. All the impossible. I wanna do.” Obama to …Sykes?
“Wanda Sykes? Foul, unfunny. But she hasn’t been funny since the 70s anyways.”
Now, knowing her as well as her, so called, sense of humor, would you invite her to your family celebration?

Wanda Sykes, like Garafalo are an embarrassment to women and the human race. Liberals are misarable people.

Ms. Sykes committed several verbal HATE CRIMES delivered from the podium bearing the seal of the President of the United States of America.
Doesn’t everything have to be reviewed and approved in advance? Who allowed Ms. Sykes to say these things? I understand cutting-edge humor and anti-politically-correct is the order of the day, but “cutting-edge” can be handled professionally in the delivery of a comedian with self-respect and a sense of common decency.
Someone owes an apology to the citizens of the, VP Biden and Pres. Obama.

I found this video of The President of the U.S.A. encouraging, funny, honest and refreshing. I loved the jokes, and could hear the conservative grumble in the audience, and I’m so amazed and pleased that real life reaches politics in the U.S A. for a change.I see courage,honesty and humanity in power. GOOD FOR ALL OF US! I hope Obama is well protected, as many of our great liberal world leaders have not been in the past, when something this good comes to light, it seems.I’ve seen something brave, avant garde, and truly inspiring in this. If there is a God, God bless you and all of us through you. brilliant! Please don’t change!

I must say that the joke about his daughters flying the jet was in poor taste. It belittles the traumatic response that his fellow countrymen and women felt. I’ve seen the coverage of that fly over and can understand their reaction. THAT was arrogant and illconsidered humour. OK enjoy your well received and welcome success, but what the hell was that about? You are supposed to be one of the world’s best brains…so how about that for consideration? What a clutz!

I suppose all the negative comments are down to that fact that people want to know [and are not accustomed to see] the president being serious.The fly over was inappropriate part of the funny stuff in my opinion.I think he did a poor job on that particular event. DON’T undervalue the trauma that people continue to suffer. How could you do that?In this respect you came across[ quite righty] as a jerk.

I think it’s kind of scary that I can see the pitfalls in this speech, and yet Obama took this to the public without consideration. I agree with the edginess of most of the import, but for God’s sake, why make a joke of the fears of the people in NY?

Her jokes were in bad taste. I find nothing funny about wishing death upon someone not even an enemy. Yet liberals and democrats try to get rid of the death penalty and then sit there and wish death upon someone.
