Top Intel Republican: Pelosi Has Lost ‘Credibility’ on Interrogation Tactics

ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: The top Republican on the House intelligence committee told ABC News Friday that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi “doesn’t have any credibility” in her claim that she was never briefed by intelligence officials that waterboarding and other hard interrogation techniques had been employed. Rep. Peter Hoekstra, R-Mich., said an intelligence community report to Congress this week clearly demonstrates that Pelosi was told about “enhanced interrogation techniques” in a September 2002 briefing conducted by intelligence officials. “The record now is clear: She was briefed on enhanced interrogation techniques,” Hoekstra said. “The fundamental point is, she knew there were enhanced interrogation techniques going on, and she did nothing to stop them.” Asked about Pelosi’s contention that she was told only about the legal justification for harsh techniques, but not the actual use of those techniques, in the September 2002 briefing, Hoekstra said: “She doesn’t have any credibility. . . . I think what’s going on is, she clearly doesn’t want to be on record for ever having supported waterboarding.” Pelosi spokesman Brendan Daly fired back: “Once again, the Republicans are trying to politicize intelligence. Instead of irresponsible accusations, here are the facts: the Speaker has been absolutely consistent in her statements about the one briefing she received in September 2002." Pelosi today issued a slightly broader statement describing her recollection of the briefing. Though the report to Congress states that the briefing in question included a “description of the particular EITs that had been employed,” Pelosi maintains that she was not told that any techniques had actually been used. (Yesterday, her spokesman issued a statement stating only that past instances of waterboarding were not discussed.) In a written statement, Pelosi said today: “My understanding of the briefing I received is consistent with the description that CIA General Counsel Scott Muller provided to Congresswoman Jane Harman in a letter dated February 28, 2003, which states: ‘As we informed both you and the leadership of the Intelligence Committees last September, a number of Executive Branch lawyers including lawyers from the Department of Justice participated in the determination that, in the appropriate circumstances, the use of these techniques is fully consistent with U.S. law.’ ” She goes on to acknowledge that her recollection of the meeting is different than the one provided by intelligence officials: “As reported in the press, a cover letter from CIA Director [Leon] Panetta accompanying the briefings memo released this week concedes that the descriptions provided by the CIA may not be accurate.” Panetta’s letter states that, since the report was based only on notes taken by the intelligence officials who were in the room, “the Committee will have to determine whether this information is an accurate summary of what actually happened.” Hoekstra said he has reviewed the notes from the meeting, though he cannot discuss their contents because they are classified. He said, however, that he planned to send a letter today to Panetta and President Obama, asking that the notes be declassified. Told about Pelosi’s contention that she was not told about waterboarding or other harsh tactics, Hoekstra pointed out that terrorist suspect Abu Zubaydah — who was discussed in the September 2002 briefing — was waterboarded repeatedly the previous month. “Now she’s to the point of accusing the CIA of lying to her,” Hoekstra said. “Her story keeps changing.” Daly said that Pelosi’s public statements have not changed, and added that she "is making no accusation against the CIA — she referenced the director’s letter to Mr. Hoekstra in which he said that the descriptions provided by the CIA may not be accurate.” In her statement, Pelosi also points out that — as she has maintained — she was only present for one of the more than 40 briefings for members of Congress on enhanced interrogation techniques. The report makes clear that waterboarding was discussed in other briefings, though there’s no mention of it in the one-sentence description of the September 2002 briefing.

“Throw her under the bus?” Sarah Palin is to the Republican Party as Nancy Pelosi is to the Democratic Party. They’d both be a heck of a lot better off without them.

Of course – now the actions of the Republican administration are all Pelosi’s fault because she didn’t raise a ruckus the one time they mentioned their use to her.
I guess the Republicans still haven’t learned what the electorate thinks of their passing-the-buck show.

She’s a power-hungry disappointment who, I hope, loses her next election. Funny how someone brings down Bush with this report. Pelosi is not under attack for ever agreeing or not agreeing with the methods, it’s her agreeing AND disagreeing with them. FlipFlop! Sound familiar?!?…I’m glad BUSH did what he did to fight terrorism. Maybe we should all take a lesson and put aside political correctness for our safety, especially when dealing with terrorists.

The CIA openly admits that it just does not know what the briefing(s) entailed.
So, this means that Hoekstra, a Rush wanna be, just does not have a clue as to what he is talking about. But, then that is typical of Republicans. They cannot control the legislative process, though will of the people, so rather than be constructive, they are destructive like spoiled little brats.

You know, I got to thinking the same thing. THIS is proof that she lied? I have no loyalty to Pelosi or anything but I thought the real issue was who authorized and requested torture? Not who got briefed that torture might be utilized. Pelosi has no power to authorize anything. They could have told her out and out that it was torture and she couldn’t have done a heck of a lot of anything about it other than, what? Blow the whistle? Who do you think, in that Republican Congress would have listened to her? She’d have been crucified as a traitor anyway.
All of this is an attempt at deflection away from Cheney, Bybee, Yoo and co.

Posted by: A | May 8, 2009, 5:40 pm 5:40 pm

OK, so as a member of the Intelligence Committee she only attended 1 of 40 briefings (why is that?). And now she says she knew that waterboarding was discussed but just that she didn’t know it was being used. Assuming this is correct (which I do not believe), why would Ms. Pelosi, in her leadership role, have stated in September 2002 for the record she opposed use of these interrogation techniques, even if the lawyers said they were legal? Let her answer that one.

Posted by: food for thought | May 8, 2009, 5:47 pm 5:47 pm

If you believe that anyone but the chosen few in the Bush administration KNEW just what was happening with torture you are forgetting a lot of the very recent past. A few so-called rotten apples were tried and convicted for what happened at Abu Ghraib because the Bush administration said only those lowly soldiers were doing such horrible things. We all know now that torture was being ordered from the whitehouse down. No Democrat was going to get the truth from Bush’s Whitehouse where many things were done without the Congress being notified at all.

Posted by: Lara | May 8, 2009, 9:28 pm 9:28 pm

Democrats like Pelosi can routinely lie and the media downplays it hoping the story will go away. Democrats use billions of tax payer dollars to fund corrupt groups like ACORN (under numerous investigations for voter fraud and embezzling tax payer funds) and the media says little or nothing.
Democrats observe no legal constraints that do not suit them, from rampant organized voter fraud at the street level to blatant disregard of constitutionally dictated legislative procedure and process to thwart the will of the voters and the media cheers them on. The media should be opposing everything democrats do but they don’t nor will they.
What the first 100 days of President Obama’s Administration has demonstrated is that there is no such thing as the Constitution and the rule of law, there is only power and money. The democrats never shrink from a tactic they deem advantageous to taking power from the private sector and the States, no matter how damaging they may be to national interests. Their lack of scruples has been rewarded and as we have seen already they are fully prepared to exploit the powers they have won. See the allocation of funds for the democrat voter fraud machine ACORN in the recently passed suicide pact called the ‘porkulus bill’ for example.
How about a nationwide tax revolt organized and fully supported by the entire Republican party as step one. San Francisco has demonstrated the feasibility of defying federal laws on immigration and harboring illegal aliens. Following this lead Republican governors could protect state citizens from federal tax prosecutions. Step two would be to directly and explicitly challenge Obama’s legitimacy until he proves otherwise. The merits of the challenge are immaterial, what counts is establishing the reality by repetition of the assertion as fact. The Democrats exploited this tactic with regard to the motivations and execution of the Iraq war and the housing crisis to tremendous political advantage.
Bottom line, the GOP has to use the tactics the Democrats have so successfully used to seize power if they expect to stop Democrats from permanently destroying America as we know it. The question is, even it the GOP has he guts to use the same tactics the Democrats routinely use will the media meekly stand by and even cheer lead a similar power grab from the GOP? Probably not.

A Republican congressman is criticizing a Democratic congresswoman because in 2002 she supposedly knew about waterboarding practices and “she did nothing to stop them”.
Isn’t this rather like an armed robber criticizing the store clerk because while he was pointing a shotgun at her face and robbing her till “she did nothing to stop [him]“???
Republicans have been trying ALL YEAR to blame Democrats for the damage that they – Republicans – have done over the past 8 years or more. They are ALL a bunch of immature and destructive DELINQUENTS who utterly REFUSE to take responsibility for their own acts! They are selfish, self-centered, insecure BRATS who have grown too big and too old for their spats!
If Republicans insist on maintaining this irresponsible and immature attitude and behavior, it would frankly be better if they would all just leave Congress and take up late-night armed robbery – where the damage they do might at least be somewhat limited.

Posted by: Mihann | May 8, 2009, 11:58 pm 11:58 pm

I’m a registered democrat and certainly vote and throw my support that way.
All I have to say about this is; Nancy Pelosi had any credibility to begin with? AS IF…………

Posted by: dk | May 9, 2009, 3:11 am 3:11 am

The Republicans had plenty of help..namely Pelosi and the Democrat congress. Stop blaming Bush, it’s time to look at All who are to blame. Taking responsibility is a two way street. Bush is gone…Pelosi should be.

This is a ridiculous comment. Bush and Co had ultimate control for 6 years and they snubbed anyone who didn’t agree with them. Most of the things they did required no votes or support from Congress anyhow.
Ultimately Bush was in charge and signed off and it’s his administrations responsibility. It’s like blaming students for the problems in a school when the principal made the call.

“In her statement, Pelosi also points out that — as she has maintained — she was only present for one of the more than 40 briefings for members of Congress on enhanced interrogation techniques.”….I guess that not having in interest in showing up and listening to what was being reported in over 40 briefings on the same topic is a viable excuse? What exactly was she doing instead of her job?

Posted by: Steve | May 9, 2009, 3:44 am 3:44 am

I actually feel a little sorry for the botox granny. Her lies are starting to show right on her chin, where they belong.

Posted by: Peach | May 9, 2009, 3:47 am 3:47 am

Let’s see . . . Pelosi claimed that the CIA memo incorrectly shows her to be lying in her first denial, and then we have this response reported:
“Now she’s to the point of accusing the CIA of lying to her,” [United States Representative] Hoekstra said. “Her story keeps changing.”
Which next leads Pelosi’s mouthpiece Daly to provide this “clarification”:
“Daly said that Pelosi’s public statements have not changed, and added that she ‘is making no accusation against the CIA — she referenced the director’s letter to Mr. Hoekstra in which he said that the descriptions provided by the CIA may not be accurate.’ ”
So it appears that we’ve arrived at the point where the Speaker of the House for the United States of America (the most powerful nation on earth) is now telling American citizens through her mouthpiece that the Obama-appointed Director of the CIA (the most powerful intelligence agency on earth) has now announced to American citizens that his CIA agents are maybe either lying or are incompetent or are neither — and that he doesn’t even know if they are or are not or are neither.
Americans are definitely in the very best of hands!!!
What’s next? Maybe the CIA will now disclose that it was actually Pelosi who piloted Air Farce One when it buzzed New York, and the President’s teleprompter was flying the fighter jet while the President took THE photo — the ONLY photo.
But Pelosi will probably just say the CIA liars (or incompetents) are once again being liars (or incompetents), and the CIA Director will say maybe they are or maybe they aren’t but that he just doesn’t know (again).
Whatever comes out next, this witch hunt has at least uncovered the witch despite her tangled web of deceit.
Score: America 1, Pelosi 0

Before everyone gets their panties in a wad, why not tune into the comment from CIA Director Panetta. He “states” the report is based on the “recollections” of CIA officials involved in the briefings and not from official transcripts. And any statement from a Republican, former chairman of the Intel committee or not, for me at least, is highly suspect. I do not think there will be any official verification either way because that is the way they wanted it.
And I think it highly likely the republicans, who controlled the committee at that time were not open about what was going on. If they were I am sure that someone from the Democratic side would have leaked it to the media. Bush and company were not popular then either.

This is a non issue as far as I’m concerned, whether she knew and signed off on so called torture. The bigger issue is that she is part of the checks and balances that are set up in our system and she didn’t do much to uphold these checks and balances, she instead chose to save her political butt at the time, and she didn’t care enough about what was going on to even be present. This is the typical story of a politician who goes whichever way the wind blows and tries to have it both ways in the end.

“Pelosi Has Lost ‘Credibility’ on Interrogation Tactics”
This lying woman has lost all credibility!!!

Posted by: Mihann | May 9, 2009, 9:28 am 9:28 am

she knew and didn’t object. Think of the political damage had she objected and the LA attack occurred. She would be blamed for preventing the attack. As it was, waterboarding got the data, we saved American’s lives and we should do more of it.

Posted by: brian | May 9, 2009, 9:31 am 9:31 am

Credibility and politician–isn’t that an oxymoron?

Posted by: jonnie36 | May 9, 2009, 9:56 am 9:56 am

Pelosi has lost a lot including her mind – and whats his face in the Senate.
Pelosi’s eyes give it away – that crazed look…the last time I saw such a look was watching Friday the 13th.
People do not feel badly or upset about her actions – Duval Patrick governor of Massachusetts, wants to give Free vehicles to those on welfare, register them, and insure them so they can find work. Those who habitually are on welfare, live and die on it .. have 8 or 9 kids collect food stamps, money, free health/medical, and now he wants to give people in the slums free cars. Hell – its better being a foreigner or poor in the U.S. than it is being a 60 hour a week american worker.

Posted by: C. James | May 9, 2009, 11:05 am 11:05 am

Pelosi had lost credibility long before this… political hack.

Posted by: bob | May 9, 2009, 11:06 am 11:06 am

An interesting sidebar to all of this is that ABC was schooled by the CIA earlier when their CIA operative told Brian Ross and televised on his show that Abu Zubaydah was only waterboarded once. Weel we know that wasn’t so. And there “were” republican committee members who were at the 40 intel briefings, uh where is the outrage at their lack of honesty. This is a smear job. Oh by the way, Pelosi is out of the country and unable to defend herself. Again before you get outraged, get the facts.

Posted by: ArkansawTravler | May 9, 2009, 11:08 am 11:08 am

Article this morning in the Washington Post indicates Pelosi’s Aide also attended a briefing in Jan, 2003 about waterboarding being used. This Aide also indicates that there is no way Pelosi didn’t know about it.
You put partisan politics ahead of national security. Every hypocritical Liberal needs to be rounded up, put on trial for treason, then when found guilty executed.

Posted by: t. hill | May 9, 2009, 11:16 am 11:16 am

Hey I am glad that Bush kept us safe. Not so sure that will last much longer. Believe me she knew what was going on. She just thinks all of us Americans are stupid and will believe her. Yeah right. Fat chance…………I don’t believe any of them. They still don’t get it and the country is falling apart. Glad I am poor so I won’t fell the pain as bad at the people who claim to care about us.

Posted by: B | May 9, 2009, 12:14 pm 12:14 pm

The Democrats cannot be taken seriously on national security. They will sell the US out to the opinion of foreign leftists whenever they think they can get away with it.
And have you seen her interviews? “Airhead” is a kind description of this feeble-minded old lady. Either she has dementia and cannot remember these briefings or, more likely, she is a liar and will say anything to appease her radical leftwing constituency.

Posted by: frege | May 9, 2009, 12:32 pm 12:32 pm

NO enhanced interrogation, no water boarding, so what if a few thousand americans die, thats just collateral damage.

Posted by: Lizzie | May 9, 2009, 3:04 pm 3:04 pm

I’m 28, I will be 88 and there will be people in here that are blaming George Bush and talking about George Bush. Why can’t we just have a discussion about Pelosi? Why does someone always need to flip it around to George Bush and 8 years of blah blah blah. If we were talking about the weather report for next week some tard bot would blame rain on Bush. Get over it! He kept us sage but signed too many spending bills, we know, alright! Just flippin’ talk about the issue at hand, Pelosi! So annoying…..

Skip said-
Ultimately Bush was in charge and signed off and it’s his administrations responsibility. It’s like blaming students for the problems in a school when the principal made the call.
By this standard, it should be Obama resigning for the Statue of Liberty flyver by AirForce One. Is he not in charge?

My family attended the welcome party for my uncle’s son who has been one of combat troops from Iraq. I am so proud and thank of his service. He has shared how his team has made a lot of efforts to catch the terrorists even one or two because nowadays female and teenager boy suicide bombers have been growing and growing at the spot of battle. Thus, he’s almost disillusioned with what main stream medias, some high level politicians and few domestic American seem to be more interested in human rights of the Detainers at GITMO, the waterborading of the terrorists, enhanced interrogation techniques
American Warrior’s efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan. I can say definitely that AMERICA GOES A WRONG DIRECTION NOW. WE SHOULD GET RID OF NANCY PELOSI IN 2010.

Posted by: Get rid of Pelosi | May 9, 2009, 8:27 pm 8:27 pm

I am shocked the media is covering this. You are used to cover up mistakes and lies the dems make.

In addition to all of the reports implicating that many congressional members (including Pelosi) were briefed on the terrorist interrogations, the Select Senate Intelligence Committee was also privy to this kind of information. John Rockefeller was in on the most of these meetings.

Bush and his Republican supporters caused this mess and brought disgrace to this country.
For them to now target Nancy is outrageous.

Posted by: Kevin | May 11, 2009, 6:13 am 6:13 am

DOES ANYONE seriously doubt the fact that Nancy Pelosi is easily the worst Speaker ever to hold that position ? WOW !

Posted by: Ron | May 11, 2009, 11:44 am 11:44 am

Kevin spouting the liberal line. It is all Bush’s fault. He made Nancy lie. Apparently the liberals see nothing wrong with not telling the truth.

Posted by: John | May 11, 2009, 11:56 am 11:56 am

Like politicans on both sides- Pelosi is a proven liar. Congress and the people need to demand these types be kicked out on their cans!

Posted by: Jay Wright | May 11, 2009, 2:25 pm 2:25 pm

Nancy Pelosi as speaker is Bush’s fault. He should have had her arrested and tried for treason after her visit to Syria. She consorted with a known enemy during a time of war. This is a crime punishable by death by firing squad. She is a liar and is the worst speaker of the house ever and should be removed from office.

Posted by: 1post3 | May 11, 2009, 7:04 pm 7:04 pm

Phil – Bob Graham (as you noted on the Senate Intelligence Committee at the time as Pelosi) says they were not briefed on torture.

Posted by: Spencer | May 11, 2009, 7:54 pm 7:54 pm

nancy pelosi is as guilty as the bush administration. She was aware and leaned about the torture though intlligence briefings. Now she must go and she knows this soshe will not go down easy good bye nancy you are as crooked as the rest of your fellow congressmen……

Posted by: jgarrett | May 11, 2009, 9:14 pm 9:14 pm

Since all of the GOP condone Torture and waterboarding you have no problem when it is done to American soldiers correct? You remember POW’s, John McCain? Since you all do not care, why don’t you sign up and go fight in the war’s? Do you duty for America just like our young men and women.

Posted by: to weird | May 14, 2009, 12:27 pm 12:27 pm

I agree! Pelosi is the worst kind of Democrat. Do liars always get to the top in Government?

Posted by: Richard White | May 14, 2009, 2:00 pm 2:00 pm

Pelosi is a part of the group raising accusations against Bush and his administration. Why did she wait five years? Why didn’t they bring this up before the last incident? There was time in between incidents. If this was such a hot button issue why wasn’t it made one when it was occuring. This tactic was used and there are documents describing it all over the internet. What is the issue now, the lack of information or the lack of allegance to America. What’s our next tactics for retaining terrorists, three square meals and volley ball?
