Webb Takes on Administration on Gitmo

Big news from Jim Webb today.

If Sen. Webb’s any indication, the president is running into more trouble with his own party on his plans to close down Guantanamo. Despite his support earlier this year for the president’s policy, Webb, D-Va., said today on "This Week" that no detainee, including the 17 Uighurs, should come to the U.S. He also said that Guantanamo should not be closed on the current timeline.

To this Independent Virginia voter, he is not.

We continue to debate who is a terrorist and to treat them. Why don’t we go get one that we know is a terrorist and see if U.S objects to torture. I’m talking about Osama ben Ladin. I must be the only one who remembers Senator McCain saying he has a sure fire way to get him. Lets go get him and then see what we define as torture and unfair detention. We are waiting Senator.
Thank you

As a Marine and a Virginian.. WEBB is a JOKE!
All the Dems were on board with the closing of Gitmo (mainly to irritate the Repubs), but with a possibility of the Terrorists coming to their State and their voters raising $#@@ about it, now it is a different story.

Guantanamo detainees should be giving back to there on country for trial we the United States don’t need too spend the money,we are a bankrupted country for the time being…..
About this unintelligent war, I believe that the middle east should taking care of there on business of war we should not be over there…(9-11 would have never happen if we would have stay away from the middle east.) They don’t wants us over there in the first place…If the oil wasn’t there we would not be there either!!!!
We should call it the OIL WAR!!!
I don’t believe that we will ever catch Bin Laden!!!!
How can we tell another country what to do when our on United States of America is going down the toilet with this economic melt down…..Not to mention all the criminals and a long record of crime on our streets from the lack of jobs in the United States.
We as a country have so much down fall now we need to sweep around our on back door before we go point fingers at other counties.
It sure does make other countries look down there nose at us saying America is being so damn stupid.
WHAT HAVE WE BECOME THIS GREAT COUNTRY CALLED THE UNTIED STATED OF AMERICA?
THE COUNTRY OF LIARS AND DECEIVERS!

What? You mean all those Dem’s who were so hot to close Gitmo don’t want these poor, unfortunate, murdering, bombers in their own States? Who’d have thunk it? And of course, all the Euro’s who were so critical of the US are just clamoring to have the detainees sent there as well. NOT!

Posted by: Todd | May 17, 2009, 12:46 pm 12:46 pm

This is so funny. The democrats are bumbling morons. I cannot wait until tomorrow to see what they do next. And by the way, we cannot send them back to their own country because THEY DON’T WANT THEM.

I watched the lively roundtable today May 17, 2009 and was angered by the continueduse of the term, “vice-pres” for Cheney acting as if in the present tense and the nation reporter then referring to him, as Pres. Cheney! After about 10 misquotes like this, NOONE made the correction. REMINDER: Cheney is NOT in power, technically, anyway. But you’d never know it.
As a movie screen-writer, I have uncovered much of the real torture that will come out in Sy Hersh’s book (ie rape of young iraqi boys videotaped in front of their mother’s, Cheney’s contract assassins, the pedophile ring contracted by Cheney & Rumsfeld, and the ridiculous notion that we in America should hide this info, when everyone else in the world already know what torture took place, we, collectively as a nation are finding out now, in two books, one out now and future movies and the growing info movement from news outside the U.S.
As a former Republican, I find it unacceptable that the round table today, further added to Cheney’s
dangerous God-complex by referring to him as the current Vice-Pres.

Some folks still don’t get! Your family members are dying to save lives others in a different country from turmoil. We folks standing on the sidelines can scream bloody murder all we want, about how it is not fair to keep our soldiers overseas. But, anyone of those Military Men and Women will tell you. They believed in their hearts what they are doing is for a cause, that they believe in. Remember, not one of these soldiers were forced to do what they are doing. Now, we as humans can never forget displacements throughout history and today, the mental hardship most everyone suffered. Slavery – extinctions – persecutions – chemical elimination – suppression and just outright killing of people around the world. We sworn as humans as a country that believes all people are created and treated equal. We as a country will never allow this to happen again anywhere in the world and be silent about it. Many wonderful citizens and clergies of Iraq and all our neighboring countries hate what is happening in their country and wants it to stop now. But, as seen the weak needs help from the strong. I believed the Jewish race thought us all a valuable lesson of listening “To The Cries Of Agonizing Horror”. These overseas countries must take a stand with all our countries that are willing to help. Stop, giving in to the criminals because you are scared, and protect your family values and rights. When those criminals finish using you they always go after your family. The United States Of America is not the Police of the world. But, The United States Of America will always be first are foremost to speak out taking action against any country who willfully and intentionally strive to do others harm or destructiveness. And that’s the way a real human with feelings and our God’s intended it to be.

by the way I know what I wrote above is the truth and some good stuff.
But, it don’t include the BILL COLLECTORS. LOL :}

Hey Truth Girl, Those were pretty intense revelations!! When is your movie coming out, does it cover the taping of these
alleged iraqi children, who were tortured?
Did Cheney and Rumsfeld order it? Where are these tapes now? Can you reveal any other sources, other than Semour Hersh?
When is his book coming out, what other book and newspapers, are you referring to?
Geez…heavy stuff, if true. Cutty say,
American Media is like reading The Weekly Reader…watered down propaganda!

Posted by: robertcutty | May 17, 2009, 2:49 pm 2:49 pm

Hey Robert & Igor,
Good dialogue. Um-m I’ve uncovered things you wouldn’t believe but I’m saving the best for the movie script, I’m hoping my agent and the money people come through within the next six months. It’s actually horrifying how a shadow government of certain individuals have so little regard for human life, ie innocent children, refugees, our wonderful men and women in the armed forces, (my nephews included-one is in Iraq) and the using of people’s religion and goodness, to dupe them. Many of them claim to be anti-abortionists leaders & they themselves have molested children. But less is more, till the movie comes out.
Often crimes against children are never prosecuted but if you follow the money, immoral people are always dishonest with money. The truth is a glorious thing, it sets us free.
God Bless America that we can tell our own truths.
Love to All, Truth Girl

postscript: As for American Media being ‘watered down’, I admire George
Stephanapoulous a great deal, I think “This Week” is a very good news reporting medium & you get a balanced round table there, try to find other venues just as reputable, not just infotainment or talk hosts who are not really political pundits.

Jim Webb was one of the first men Obama asked to fill the vice-presidency. He said no, with some lame reason about being of greater value in the Senate. Baloney!
Jim Webb is a smart man. He knew exactly how an Obama administration would turn out, and he wanted no part of it.
I have friends who know Jim Webb personally. He is a very ambitious man. He wants to be president. When he turned Obama down, he knew what he was doing.

Posted by: Mary Lee | May 17, 2009, 5:42 pm 5:42 pm

Of course Webb would have said no to them being brought to his state. Since 9/11 Bush has presented them as monsters and sub human and according to Cheney they are not human. The Republicans have a campaign going on right now “Guantanamo Prisoners: Soon In Your Neighborhood?”
He said this very carefully George as you pressed him on this since the Republicans in his state would use any comment against him? Even attempt to bring him down the way they are attempting to bring down Nancy! If he said Yes next week he would become the topic of your round table.
George Stephanopoulos: “Last Week I ask Webb about relocating Guantanamo Prisoners to his State and he said Yes. The Human Rights group have state that they are no threat. This week the Republicans have forced him to resign! Whats your take on this George Will?”
Georg Will “First I don’t blame you Stephanopoulos and second heres a list of Democrat Senators I want to be your future guests ….”
This is the sad part even as you pointed out that these detainees were no threat according to a respectable known Human Rights Group the Republicans have painted them as monsters to be feared.
Also They would be a reminder that Bush was wrong and he threw innocent people in Jail. Which got me thinking George I agree that we need to trust again and to trust a Human Right Group is a start and if they find a home in the USA it could end up being a wonderful story. They would also learn what Democracy really is coming from People who really care about Democracy. The right message for the world.

To All,
B.O’s idealism is meeting reality. I’m glad he’s reversing direction, but I doubt he’s reversing direction. B.O. doesn’t intend to close GITMO and always intended to keep military tribunals, but campaigned on ending both of these to secure more votes. Make my words, by year’s end we’ll be hearing how GITMO will remain in use because there’s no other way to house these types of “combatants”.
I suppose I have to ask this question. Is there any other way to hadle terrorists other than how G.W. handled them? Perhaps the POTUS should have the power to declare persons exempt from due process? In past wars, irregular fighters were generally summairily executed.
I’m not so worried about the US image abroad. GITMO can be a good deterrent, that if you are a captured terrorist, you’re going to spend your remaining days on a tropical island, locked up out of doors, exposed to the sun, etc, and simply rot away.

Oh, my God! The party that criticised Bush for years about Gitmo is talking about keeping Gitmo open! Do you really think the president bit off a little too much? The libs after all the criticizing, are following the same path! The same path in Iraq, Afghanistan and Gitmo. After all, Bush’s ideas weren’t so wrong after all. So, Bush in keeping prisoners at Gitmo really did keep America safe by not bringing them to American soil. Where’s the criticism and condemnation of Obama’s policies? What fools the liberals are! Obama is Bush II!

“This is the sad part even as you pointed out that these detainees were no threat according to a respectable known Human Rights Group the Republicans have painted them as monsters to be feared.”
And how, exactly, does this unnamed, unknown, allegedly respectable Human Rights Group know that these unnamed, unknown detainees are no threat?
No threat to who or whom?
Does this unnamed, unknown, allegedly respectable Human Rights Group have a variable track record of proving unnamed, unknown detainees are no threat to unnamed, unknown people?

Webb is a joke, and so is Obama. Two liars, two flip-floppers. I for one cannot wait until next November when we can throw San Fran Nan the Liar back into the Minority in the House, and hopefully we can take some seats back in the Senate so that Obama can stop spending us into bankruptcy.

I would give each one of them a really safe parachute, put them on a plane, and drop them back over their own county. Wouldn’t even touch down and let them walk off. Enough is enough. I do not want to torture them but I also do not want them anywhere in the USA. Don’t care if it is 3 miles from my home or 300 or 3000. Send them back to their country and then use the money we were spending to detain them in making our borders safer and entry into this country harder to abuse.

“We should call it the OIL WAR!!!”
WOW… utterly briliant on your part!
Did you just wake up TODAY and relaize the Middle East Has oil ??????
OF COURSE THIS IS ABOUT OIL !!!!!
If there was no oil there, this would be no different than Bosnia or any other spot on the planet where you have two sides who have hated each other for centuries.

Ingest, thanks for the enlightenment about political titles, I was not aware. As for the ‘tin hat’ reference, that was uncalled for. On a different subject, I was emailing Sen. Hatch yesterday, (a friend of my father’s), regarding the ‘Pedophile Protection Act’ hoping he would vote against it. When I was an air-personality in N.Y., I fought off a mugger who was stalking me after one night, but if above bill passes the senate, it could be a felony to fight off such an attack, if it’s viewed as a hate crime instead of self-defense. Any thoughts anyone?
Also, regarding Seymour Hersh, perhaps you haven’t heard that he has testimony of three well-known generals, for the book and his research. Since the Pulitzer-winning journalist uncovered the truth about the Milai massacre in Vietnam – after it was misrepresented in the NY Times and the CIA is currently not refuting his current findings re: Iraq, he is a force to reckon with, in this debate.
Also, I would recommend that you look to news sources outside the U.S. who already are reporting the taping of these atrocities.

Give me a break. Do this Senator’s think we are complete idiots? The United States penal system has managed to incarcerate The likes of Charles Manson, Jeffrey Dahmer, and the Unibomber, but we WILL not incarcerate a terrorist? WHY Again? We have maximum security prisons all over this country that the taxpayers have footed the bill for. What did we build them for? Army officers will not work in a place with terrorists? Excuxse me? They work with them everyday in Afganistan and Iraq, why should the home turf be any different? How lily livered are Congress and the Senate really. What they are really afraid of is that these terrorists might actually talk about what happened in the last 10 years. The U.S. Govt. has let Bin Laden walk away scott free, and they will not imprison on American soil the people who helped him? What is wrong with this picture.
