WH Dings Comedian for Joke at WH Correspondents’ Dinner

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs this afternoon expressed displeasure with the comedy stylings of Wanda Sykes, who at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner referred to Rush Limbaugh as the "20th hijacker" so "strung-out on Oxycontin" he missed his flight, this afternoon .

Gibbs said "a lot of topics are better left for serious reflection rather than comedy. I don’t think there’s any doubt that 9/11 is a part of that."

The spokesman had been asked by a New York Times reporter if the president had any reaction to Sykes’ jokes about Limbaugh at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Gibbs said he didn’t know how the talent is booked at the dinner, and suggested the reporter speak to the immediate past president of the WHCA, Jennifer Loven, sitting in the front row.

I am sure Limbaugh is eating this up. He is a big boy and can use this somehow.
I felt bad about the Palin joke, if you could call it that, since Mr Palin was in attendance.

Limbaugh can dish it out He can take it besides the Fat drug addict deserves it!

Good for Sykes.
This is just one among many quotes that have passed though the lips of el Rushbo:
“Take that bone out of your nose and call me back.” He was speaking to black woman.
That’s not just a kind of accidental slip of the tongue. This is a pattern he’s lived up to for years.
The sad thing is that Limbaugh is being held up over Colin Powell and over Michael Steele as the future of the party. You don’t need to read between the lines to see what people like Cheney see as the future of the GOP in the age of Obama.
What’s shocking is that it is so obvious.

The most polarizing president in modern history.
Seeing Obama laugh at 9/11, waterboarding, kidney failure–no surprise to me.
He made it very clear in the first week of his presidency–Rush is a threat.

Limbaugh on African-Americans: “They’re 12 percent of the population. Who the hell cares?”
Yeah, Sykes sure was mean to poor Rushbo.

Posted by: blip | May 11, 2009, 2:23 pm 2:23 pm

She might have crossed the line, but that is what comedians do. Ms. Sykes did a great job and, apart from McCain’s daughter, Mr. Palin, and Rush Limbaugh, everyone else enjoyed it immensely. Way to go, Wanda!

Posted by: Angela G | May 11, 2009, 2:23 pm 2:23 pm

Dumb, ridiculous, and just plain foolish.
Comedy clubs are one thing, where nothing is held back (or should be), but a WH event is completely different.
What an asinine thing to do, to put the WH and POTUS in such a position–and what an idiotic thing for the WH to do to schedule Wanda Sikes, or anyone, without making sure that jokes like these aren’t used.

Real classy of Obama to tie in Rahm’s vulgarity to Mother’s Day.
Did he explain the joke to his kids?

Posted by: mike | May 11, 2009, 2:24 pm 2:24 pm

Obama laughed uproariously at the dinner, but Gibbsy says it was in poor taste? Waterboarding is torture, but also pretty funny?

So it’s okay for Rush to say that he HOPES THE ADMINISTRATION FAILS, that is, an entertainer can take a shot at the president but Sykes can’t take a shot at another entertainer??

Just like every other gaffe this administration makes Obama never knew or had no idea (flyover, RevWright).
How hard would it have been for BO to ask Sykes to not be hateful to anyone.
Or for him to look at her jokes.
Does he ever show any common sense or leadership?

Limbaugh is a drama queen I would bet he is playing the GOP just for ratings and is a closet Independant (to go with being a closet druggie)he is NOT what he appears to be.
THAT is what Shock Jocks do,they play in order to be played.
And when you play people they bite back,he will deal with it or Whine.

I absolutely love Wanda Sykes. I could care less about her poking fun at Rush. For me the issue is using the tragedy of 9/11 to poke fun at him.
That is what should be off-limits, not Rush himself. I think people are mixing up the issue. No one cares about her poking fun at Rush, it’s the use of the terrorist attack to do it.

Posted by: Josh | May 11, 2009, 2:30 pm 2:30 pm

Waterboarding is torture, Obama doesn’t believe in torture.
But waterboarding is a great form of humor and he finds it very funny.

Posted by: nick | May 11, 2009, 2:31 pm 2:31 pm

I think when your party has no agenda in the midst of the worst economic disaster of a generation…. it makes sense to focus obsessively on a radio shock jock’s feelings. Especially if this shock jock is the leader of the party.

=== No one cares about her poking fun at Rush, it’s the use of the terrorist attack to do it.===
You’re right. No one really cares if she pokes fun at Limbaugh. She didn’t poke fun of him. She wished him dead. But I guess that is funny in some circles. Dead Americans because you disagree with their politics.

What was Obama laughing about then Gibbs?

Posted by: Truthdetector | May 11, 2009, 2:32 pm 2:32 pm

Why can’t you make reference to 9/11? We’ve been using 9/11 to promote the Republican Brand, to silence Democrats, and to justify everything under the sun–from torture to tax cuts.
As far as I can tell, 9/11 is like the Holocaust, one of those things that Republicans use to justify whatever it was that they were going to do anyway.
That’s vastly more insulting than making a joke about Rush Limbaugh.

Posted by: blip | May 11, 2009, 2:34 pm 2:34 pm

I see kidney failure somewhere in Wanda’s future. Karma
Obama will make up a quote by Churchill that proves laughing at torture is acceptable.

I guess it depended on which channel you watched as to whether you could see the Presidents reaction to the jokes of Sykes, but I never really saw his reactions to her comments, so I don’t know if he laughed or not. Judging by her reaction to his reactions, he may not have been laughing too much. Didn’t he take Bernie Mack to task one time for his comments at some event?
I didn’t think his comments about his daughters taking the jet out was all that funny, considering…….

Posted by: Maria | May 11, 2009, 2:36 pm 2:36 pm

So glad that liberals have finally started to fight back against a Republican media hate machine that has been dishing out insults for more than 20 years. Limbaugh is the founding father of the very media system that coarsened our Democracy. Don’t worry about Wanda, she is just an “entertainer” the same thing Rush calls himself.
Republicans are now so reviled and such a laughing stock, that only 21% of Americans identify with the party.
It’s called karma, fellas. You started this fight, the Democrats ended it.
Now the young people are moving forward with rebuilding this economy and cleaning up after the Bush administration.
Please stay out of the way.

Some people cannot take jokes.
They think that Wanda Sykes wants Rush Limbaugh to die.
But when Rush Limbaugh says: “I mean, let’s face it, we didn’t have slavery in this country for over 100 years because it was a bad thing. Quite the opposite: slavery built the South. I’m not saying we should bring it back; I’m just saying it had its merits. For one thing, the streets were safer after dark.”
You say, he’s just kidding!

The missing the flight because he’s strung out on OxyContin joke is funny. Wishing him dead was weird. Comedians are supposed to flirt with bad taste, but she didn’t do Obama any favors with that one.

“If I recall correctly Limbaugh said something like……… If Obama is going to take this nation down the road to socialism, then yes I hope he fail”
Its amazing that right wingers are able to recall the CYA quote but not the original.
f I wanted Obama to succeed, I’d be happy the Republicans have laid down. And I would be encouraging Republicans to lay down and support him. Look, what he’s talking about is the absorption of as much of the private sector by the US government as possible, from the banking business, to the mortgage industry, the automobile business, to health care. I do not want the government in charge of all of these things. I don’t want this to work. So I’m thinking of replying to the guy, “Okay, I’ll send you a response, but I don’t need 400 words, I need four: I hope he fails.” (interruption) What are you laughing at? See, here’s the point. Everybody thinks it’s outrageous to say. Look, even my staff, “Oh, you can’t do that.” Why not? Why is it any different, what’s new, what is unfair about my saying I hope liberalism fails? Liberalism is our problem. Liberalism is what’s gotten us dangerously close to the precipice here. Why do I want more of it? I don’t care what the Drive-By story is. I would be honored if the Drive-By Media headlined me all day long: “Limbaugh: I Hope Obama Fails.” Somebody’s gotta say it.
What baffles me is why the GOP kiss his ring given that he has shown little ability to motivate people to the polls.
He hated McCain and vigorously campaigned against him during the primaries.

“I thought you guys claim there’s no connection between 9-11 and Iraq and you just asserted there is one.”
Not at all. I was merely pointing out Bush’s distastefull joke.
Would you like a Bush joke about 9/11?
Here you go.
Bush, in the weeks before September 11, pledged to honor the sanctity of the Social Security lockbox except in the event of recession, war, or a national emergency. But after “everything changed” on 9/11, he reportedly gloated to his budget director, Mitch Daniels, “Lucky me–I hit the trifecta!” At the time, this comment (a variation of which is being recycled for laughs at current GOP fundraisers) seemed merely offensive.
“Bush was self-deprecating and humble.”
Self deprecating and humble is joking about the primary reason you invaded a country leading to the deaths of thousands of Americans and over a hundred thousand Iraqis turned out to be false.
Hahaha…what a laugh riot from the worst president in the last century and a half.

You’ve got a 2 trillion dollar deficit courtesy of Obama, an $800 billion “stimulus” package that won’t create ANY jobs this year according to Romer, stimulus money that’s not going to where it’s needed, no way to even track it and this is all you got?

I was watching CSPAN and there were very few reaction shots of the President. It did show his reaction to the basketball jokes and her joke about him mowing the lawn but after that I don’t remember many shots of him. The Limbaugh jokes, while over the top, were nothing worse than what comes out of his mouth on a daily basis. He hopes the President fails and by natural association that also means the American people and the military. He accuses Michael J. Fox of faking his Parkinson tremors. He has spewed such bigoted hate speech that I won’t even repeat it here. I just think Rush and his followers just got a BIG dose of his own medicine and found it very hard to swallow.

Bush is a punching bag because his polices and leadership have left our country in shambles.

Posted by: Ryan C | May 11, 2009, 3:00 pm 3:00 pm

Bush’s problem is that he was in office for a really long time and people got really tired of him. He’s been unpopular for a long time and for a variety of serious reasons.
People like Obama because he has only been in office for 100 days, and so far, he is doing a great job.
If Obama fails like Bush did, and in 8 years, we find ourselves in another pointless war and another pointless recession…. the media will be mean to him.
It’s silly to think that you are being singled out for persecution simply because America is anti-Republican. We voted for Bush? Remember?
But we got sick of him after he sucked everything up.

It’s not a very good joke, honestly. But, regardless, Rush Limbaugh says offensive stuff EVERY DAY, that’s his whole m.o.
But, what’s really offensive was BUSH at the WH correspondants dinner, saying “ha hah no weapons of mass destruction here! hahaha” meanwhile thousands of US soldiers and Iraqi civilians are dying b/c he put is an out of control situation.
republicans AND democrats who get worked up over stupid random jokes like this need to get a damn life. you want to make a difference in the world – stop complaining and do something.

I agree. He is not stupid. Not by a long shot.
His cult followers, however, are completely stupid. And he knows it.
All Obama has to do is say something to them it becomes fact. It doesn’t matter how far from reality it is. If Obama says tomorrow that it’s snowing in DC, Ryan and his gang will put on long coats without a second thought.
They simply do not and cannot think.
Posted by: drjohn | May 11, 2009 2:57:51 PM
Not so. I’m sure that a lot of Americans don’t pay attention to details. But we are not stupid.
We trust Obama. We learned after many, many chances not to trust Bush.
So far, Obama is doing what he was elected to do. This is nothing devious or sinister. And it is really easy to overlook minor character flaws if someone is doing a good job.
It’s when someone does a bad job, that we get irritated by even their minor flaws.
I supported Bush in 2000. And after 9/11, I was willing to do whatever he asked of us. But once he got into that whole Iraq thing, it was easy to see that he was taking advantage of our respect for him.
That’s all this is.
You shouldn’t be paranoid.

You have a war authorized by some Democrats and all Republicans in Congress that was carried out by Bush.
The entire premise of Iraq being a threat was based on lies and fear. And we have 4000+ dead and counting to show for it.
“an economy that was doing well until Democrats took over Congress in 2006,”
Democrats took over in Jan 2007. Please name the policy they enacted upon taking over Congress that hurt the economy?
” an attack on US soil that was nurtured by Clinton’s doing nothing about all the previous attacks”
Clinton response to first WTC bombing, arrest, try and convict the major players.
Clinton response to Embassy bombings, cruise missile attacks on terrorist bases.
The Cole was not determined to be Al Queda for suree until early 2001.
“and Clinton treating terrorism as a police matter.”
Perhaps if Bush had been paying attention vs clearing brush on Aug 6th we would not have had 9/11.
Oh and let’s not forget the Bush reaction to terrorism which entailed spying on American citizens and invading a country that was no threat and had little to do with terrorism and certainly not with Al Queda.

It should be noted that the planned phased withdraw is what Obama had been proposing during the campaign.

Posted by: Ryan C | May 11, 2009, 3:26 pm 3:26 pm

It’s unfortunate that both sides have become so distracted. Many of you have become such passionate cheerleaders for your party that you are missing important issues.
Obama is a smart/savvy guy. He lacks polish, but that will probably come in time. Laughing at a joke can happen if one takes it at face value without thinking of every implication of the actual content. Small potatoes.
Bush went into the war without demanding more concrete evidence. There are many who think that there were chem/bio weapons that were moved out of country, but the evidence is thin. He took a calculated risk and was wrong. But make no mistake, Saddam was an evil, evil man. Had we not dealt with him then, we would have had to sooner or later. Let’s not be overly naive. Personally, I didn’t understand the ‘urgency’ of the whole thing. And I felt it was a distraction from Afghanistan. But hindsight is always 20/20.
As for the economy? Don’t blame Bush for the greed of those on wall street. And don’t give Barney Frank and Reid and Pelosi a pass on it. They were just as engaged in this mess as Bush was. To think otherwise, is to wear blinders and to deny addressing the problems and required solutions.
The Bush deficit? Would have been higher had he not pushed back when Dem’s wanted to expand the budget (remember they held the purse strings). And if Bush’s spending was an issue, shouldn’t Obama’s spending be of at least a ‘little’ concern?
Look the real issue is… are we all willing to take a hard, hard look at our own party’s leadership? Nobody listens when it’s the other side critiquing. But if we critique our own party just as hard (and using the same criteria) we might actually get somewhere. The problem is… most Dem’s aren’t willing to ‘honestly’ evaluate/critique Obama… much like many (not all) Rep’s weren’t willing to do it with Bush.
Want progress? Come up with criteria you believe is crucial and apply it EVENLY to both parties.
PEACE

So did Colin Powell for that matter.
I love this. Saddam Hussein wanted everyone to believe he had WMD. The lies are his, not Bush’s. Bush called his bluff. The UN gave him permission to go and so did Democrats.
And Tom Friedman has written that he believes that the war in Iraq has kept this country safe.
Friedman also thinks that if Iraq goes well it would be a real problem for Al Qaida and the rest of the bad guys.

Posted by: drjohn | May 11, 2009, 3:28 pm 3:28 pm

drjohn,
If Bush was drawing down in Iraq and refocusing on Iraq, everything he and McCain said running up to the election indicated the opposite. I can only vote based on what McCain promised to do.
As far as health care…. well, I think it would be great, seeing as I know many people who have no health care… and their lives pretty much suck because of it. Maybe the medical industry can get its act together before Obama does…. but if not, well, you’ll get some disastrous change that will make a lot of sick people feel healthier and happier.
As far as infrastructure. It’s only 100 days in, but already my state has started working on road and bridge projects with the stimulus money.
As far as plugging holes and regulating things… I think he has gotten some good work done. I think forcing Chrysler into bankruptcy was a good move. It is changing the whole attitude of the auto industry in the state. I think they were all just hoping for free money. Now they are all scrambling to change.
Like I said, it’s kind of lame to compare Obama’s first one hundred days to Bush’s 8 years. But, so far, so good. Not perfect. But good.
At the very least, people feel like things are going to be better…. and that counts for something. Of course, it would benefit the Republicans in the next election to instill a panic and a feeling of gloom… but so far, I don’t see any reason to feel doomed.

“Bush was doing so because of political pressure at home and by the Iraqis.”
Bush was doing so because he won the war in Iraq, and he won it because he knew how to do so. Obama is gearing up to lose it for the sake of mindless promises he made during a political campaign.
As for Afganistan, well, he won that one four years ago:
“I assume that the war in Afghanistan is over, or is the contention that you have that it continues?” she said to a reporter.
A few moments later, she said: “This isn’t about the duration of the war. The war in Afghanistan is over.”

If we had listened to Harry Reid, it already was lost in May, 2007. Here is the military wisdom of the modern Democratic leadership: Afghanistan was won in 2005; Iraq was lost in 2007.
And no one can ever forget Bush’s political courage in going forward with the Surge when just about everybody but David Petraeus and George Bush was saying it was doomed.

Bush speech to UN
“If he declares he has none, then we will know that Saddam Hussein is once again misleading the world.”
“We know that Saddam Hussein is determined to keep his weapons of mass destruction, is determined to make more.”
And since you brought up Powell:
“We have sources that tell us that Saddam Hussein recently authorized Iraqi field commanders to use chemical weapons — the very weapons the dictator tells us he does not have.”
There’s quite a bit more of Bush admin officials telling lies.
Hans Blix after the invasion in Dec 2003
Speaking to the BBC’s World Service, Mr Blix said he was more certain than ever that there was no WMD in Iraq.
Mr Blix and a team of UN weapons inspectors spent more than three months searching for WMD in Iraq in the build-up to the war without finding anything they deemed significant.

Well, you’ve got your PBS program and your circumstantial evidence; I’ve got two independent bipartisan commissions who found just the opposite and made a substantial, permanent record of their findings.
P.S.–the term “slam dunk” was used by the CIA Director George Tenet, a Bill Clinton appointee.

Oh, I see. More liberal hypocrisy. They evidently don’t eat or make fun of their own. And why should we? You seem to have forgotten that Bush ingnored the other 49% for 8 years. Repeat after me. YOU LOST. You rubbed our nose in it for 8 years, why do you deserve special consideration after your President lied and postured his way to foreign policy and economic ruin for nearly a decade? YOU LOST. Cheney has requested of Obama that he release all the information concerning the interrogations. Why is this information not being released?
Posted by: Sigmonde | May 11, 2009 3:32:58 PM
Cheney knows that if Obama releases all of the interrogation information, even information not obtained by torture, it would destroy a number of active intelligence operations.
It’s like asking the DEA to release the names of all their informants.
Cheney knows that nobody in their right mind is going to release information about people who are under surveillance.
He’s hoping that a few mush-heads will say, “SEE! Torture is good! There IS useful intelligence obtained through torture!” But, of course, this isn’t necessarily true.
And, even if it were true, it doesn’t make it right. I mean, we could end sex trafficking by forcing people to put out on demand, for no money, for any and all people who ask. But that doesn’t make it right.

Give us an example of a lie Bill Sammon has told on the air.”
Let’s start with Carville, here’s his whole quote
“People basically like this president as a person and they want him to succeed, but they have some pretty serious doubts that have not crept in but are sort of there. You have almost half the country saying he is in over his head. Over half the country saying he is for the powerful. And as much as I would like for it or wish for it, they are not going to pull away completely from him months into his administration.
“I don’t care if people like him or not, just so they don’t vote for him and his party. That is all I care about. I hope he doesn’t succeed, but I am a partisan democrat. But the average person wants him to succeed. It is his country, his life or their lives. So he has that going for him. There is a lot that is going to happen between now and next November. It is not that people don’t like him. It is not that people don’t want him to succeed but it is also not that he doesn’t have some serious underlying problems.”
Sammon said of the recovery bill: “People look at this thing and see, you know, some mouse is being protected in [House Speaker Nancy] Pelosi’s district.” In fact, even the House Republican leadership aide from whom the claim reportedly originated acknowledged that the bill does not contain any language directing funds to San Francisco wetlands or the salt marsh harvest mouse living in them.

COLMES: Well, we found out, Bill Sammon, a lot of the things in this book are not factually correct: Dates that had sermons, as Doug suggested, he attended, he wasn’t there, saying Obama dedicated the book — or didn’t dedicate it to his family, when he did, other inconsistencies in terms of dates, times, people, and places. Why should we believe anything in this book, given that’s the case?
SAMMON: Well, the nature of those inaccuracies, I think, is relatively innocuous. In other words, the first thing the Obama camp –
COLMES: That he’s doing drugs?
SAMMON: Well, no, let me finish my sentence, Alan. I only got one sentence. I just got started.
COLMES: Go ahead.
SAMMON: The first thing on that 40-page document that the Obama camp points out is that the author got their wedding date wrong — the year of their wedding wrong. OK. Well, that’s not a good thing, but it doesn’t go to the ideology of Obama.
I think — I agree that Obama — it’s understandable that he would fight back and not make the same mistake as John Kerry did, which was to be slow to respond to the Swift Boat attacks. But there is such a thing as protesting too much. I agree that this perpetuates the story. And I also think that the blowback from the Obama camp is so heavy-handed and so brutal, calling him a liar, and so on and so forth, that I think that raises some eyebrows that perhaps they’re protesting too much.

You should read the transcript a little further. Rush then goes on to imply that the only reason anyone wants Obama to succeed is “because his father is black,” effectively calling every Obama supporter a racist.
How that one slipped by so ignored, I’ll never understand.
By the way, I’ve defended Rush in the past. When he was fired from his sports talk gig over his quip about McNabb, I thought it was bunk—and still do, as he had a valid point. And I take issue with what Wanda said (well, at least where she said it) and Obama’s reaction to it.. So, please, please, please lump me in with the frothing Rush haters on this one..

There’s a difference between doing well because you work and doing well because you inherited money. I have to work for mine.
That’s why the Kennedy’s and the Kerry’s don’t have to work. They can afford to run for office. They do nothing and contribute nothing.
It isn’t helpful to whack those of us who work really hard. Take it from those who really don’t work.
So here’s my idea- tax the crap out of passive wealth- a net worth tax. Make it 10% on estates larger than $10 million.
Gates would cough up $1.3 BILLION the first year. Buffett would be good for another billion at least. Spielberg would be good for about a billion. Kerry would be good for at least $60 million. Caroline Kennedy would be good for at least $12.5 million. Oprah would fork over about $100 million.
That’s some real money. All the money they have helps themselves only. This would be a wonderful chance for the wealthiest liberals in the world to really put their money where their mouths are.
What’d ya think?

We also should remember we have always underestimated the progress Saddam has made in development of weapons of mass destruction.” – Jay Rockefeller, Oct 10, 2002

Saddam has used chemical weapons before, both against Iraq’s enemies and against his own people. A well-funded new organization whose stated purpose is to launch a “right-wing youth movement” will make a splashy debut tonight at the Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC, in Washington, D.C. CPAC is billed as “the largest annual gathering of conservative students, activists and policymakers.”
According to CPAC materials, the group, Youth for Western Civilization, is one of the official co-sponsors, or major donors, of this year’s conference. The group has a booth in the CPAC exhibition hall, and its “Inaugural Reception” is scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. EST in the Palladium Ballroom at the Omni Shoreham Hotel.
In the past, CPAC organizers have shielded the reputation of their mainstream conservative enterprise by forbidding racist organizations like the Council of Conservative Citizens from participating. They may want to take a closer look at Youth for Western Civilization.
One of the group’s founders, Marcus Epstein, is a frequent contributor to the white nationalist hate website VDARE.com.
“Diversity can be good in moderation — if what is being brought in is desirable,” Epstein wrote in one VDARE.com essay. “Most Americans don’t mind a little ethnic food, some Asian math whizzes, or a few Mariachi dancers — as long as these trends do not overwhelm the dominant culture.”

A little off-topic here but some people have mentioned WMD. FYI – Definition of Weapon of Mass Destruction: Weapon with the capacity to inflict death and destruction indiscriminately and on a massive scale. The term has been in currency since at least 1937, when it was used to describe massed formations of bomber aircraft. Today WMDs are nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons — frequently referred to collectively as NBC weapons. Efforts to control the spread of WMDs are enshrined in international agreements such as the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty of 1968, the Biological Weapons Convention of 1972, and the Chemical Weapons Convention of 1993. See nuclear weapon; chemical warfare; biological warfare.
We all know Iraq had chemical weapons, which they used on their own people, so, by definition, there WERE WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION in Iraq when we invaded.
It would seem to me all you people who want to help our fellow human beings with health care reform and tax reform might be able to extend your sympathy towards people who were being gassed and killed for no reason other than they were born in the wrong region.

Wanda Sykes is just showing the country how tolerant and loving liberals are. They are just so full of mercy and compassion. Ms. Sykes displays the leftwing’s open-mindedness and sense of measure perfectly. She is truly an inspirational example of socialist tendencies. Bravo.

The ignorance on display in the comments on this “news item” is breathtaking. I read it only because it seemed so at odds with the way Ms. Sykes performance was received by the majority of those in attendance including Mr. Gibbs.
As an FYI:
The WH Correspondent’s Dinner is not a WH event. The WH does not book the entertainment, they don’t organize the dinner, they are the entertainment. Do you really think that GWB booked Stephen Colbert in 2006? Are you aware that he performed at the Correspondent’s dinner in 2006?
Ms. Sykes made a joke at Mr. Limbaugh’s expense. She also made fun of the President, the former President and both VPs. Why should Rush’s actions and/or statements be off limits to her or any comedian?
It is a undisputable fact that Rush illegally abused Oxycontin. It is a fact that he stated that he hoped that President Obama would fail.
Were there any children present at the dinner? Was it broadcast on national televison? Are off color or sexually oriented jokes used at the dinner on a regular basis?
Do any of the people who are complaining about this have anything constructive to do with their time? I can’t believe I was sucked into commenting on it but I live in hope that we are not ruled in this country by the lowest common vocal denominator no matter what their political persuasion.

Toby Harnden of the British Daily Telegraph:
“That’s way, way beyond reasoned debate or comedy and Obama’s reaction to it was astonishing. Imagine if a comedian ‘joked’ that Obama was a terrorist who was guilty of treason and should be tortured and allowed to die.”
While we insist that Sykes was justified in joking about someone’s death, overseas, they’re having a jolly old time laughing at our double standards.

Why doesn’t the media report the evil retort issued by Rush Limbaugh? I’m sure he said something nasty and mean about Wanda. I’m sure he’s on his radio program vocally musing that he wishes for Wanda to die.

Ryan C., I think most of the outrage is centered on the fact that Obama seemed to enjoy Wanda’s jokes. He was seen laughing at them. The issue we’re left with is that if jokingly calling someone a terrorist and hoping they die passes for comedy these days, and our president finds that funny, that’s probably not a good thing.

I think most of the outrage centers on someone daring to make fun of Rush.
The Obama laughing at the Rush jokes was reported by a single right wing outlet which has since entered the echo chamber.
I have watched the video and while Obama has a frozen smile going for most of it along with some laughs, I did not see shots of him laughing at those jokes.
So have you watched the video yet?

I have to admit I’m a big fan of offensive humor. It’s best if all are equally skewered, rather than allowing for some sacred cows. It’s also best if there is no suspicion the person making the joke actually hates his target.

I’m amazed that this thread about a comedian making a joke about an obnoxious, foul, hate-mongering talk-show host warrants upwards of 240 comments; however, Martha Raddatz post on the US Commander in Afghanistan being replaced only receives 14 comments and another on Health Care reform only receives 12.

Rush quotes: “He is exaggerating the effects of the disease. He’s moving all around and shaking and it’s purely an act. … This is really shameless of Michael J. Fox. Either he didn’t take his medication or he’s acting.” –on an ad by Michael J. Fox endorsing Claire McCaskill for Senate for supporting embryonic stem cell research.
“Feminism was established so as to allow unattractive women easier access to the mainstream of society.”
“We’re not sexists, we’re chauvinists — we’re male chauvinist pigs, and we’re happy to be because we think that’s what men were destined to be. We think that’s what women want.”
“She comes to me when she wants to be fed. And after I feed her — guess what — she’s off to wherever she wants to be in the house, until the next time she gets hungry. She’s smart enough to know she can’t feed herself. She’s actually a very smart cat. She gets loved. She gets adoration. She gets petted. She gets fed. And she doesn’t have to do anything for it, which is why I say this cat’s taught me more about women, than anything my whole life.” –on his cat

And how is the quote of Rush calling himself a male chauvinist pig hateful to anyone other then himself. He’s saying he’s stupid, he thought women liked chauvinism?

Posted by: AJ | May 11, 2009, 8:22 pm 8:22 pm

We never hear such right-wing complaints and calls for civility when Limbaugh maliciously crosses the line (like saying Michael Fox is faking his illness). A right-wing outrage that exclusively and opportunistically tracks the political ‘right’ party line does not translate as a “real” moral or ethical issue. Nor does it even translate as “moral outrage.” Instead, it can only be described as entirely consistent with the sociopathic dogma and propaganda of the ‘right’ — which strategically and selectively wears its plastic morality like excessive makeup on a hot-house prostitute. There is no genuine right-wing “morality” ethos here. Just feigned, opportunistic expressions of “indignation” solely calculated to extract some political advantage, while fanning the flames of hate and division (note the right’s illegitimate determination to tie the joke directly to Obama, solely because they seek political advantage). The malice of the right is lengendary. The Republican political right has staunchly established this image for itself. It’s a malevolent skin they feel quite comfortable in.

I think she had a really good point. she made it a joke, however, Rush Limbaugh going public with his hope that Obama fails, is akin to saying you hope our economic recovery fails, that we have economic collapse, which IS EXACTLY what the terrorists want! Sorry, but that is SPOT ON accurate. It’s IS treason and many many folks were saying it. What’s the matter, she can’t say it out loud???? Please. Cheney outed a CIA agent which endangered national security for the sake of his hissy fit that, God forbid, the truth that there WERE NO WMD was actually something we knew, and while Cheney DID commit treason, he dared accuse people of treason for simply trying to figure out the truth of whether or not we were waging an illegal war. Oh, that’s FINE with Rush! Hiding hte premise of an illegal war, trumping up reasons, exposing a CIA agent, all treasonable actions is FINE with Rush and republicans, calling for the downfall of the US, just like the terrorists, oh that’ sFINE with the republicans????? I’m GLAD someone called them out on it. DOnt like being a terrorist to your own nation??? then stop acting like one! Go girl, Wanda! Love it!

It is lovely to see that both the White House and Rush Limbaugh are moving forward and ignoring the ugliness of Ms. Sykes’s antics at the dinner. Her performance was par for the course– she’s not the first second-tier performer to try to gin up his/her notoriety when according such a public platform by going over the top. The president’s joke regarding Rush LImbaugh was much funnier and cutting without being nasty.
So Limbaugh ignores the controversy (no, I didn’t listen to his show but I know what I read on that there internet) and the WH lets Gibby slap Ms. Sykes down and move on. Very good. Let’s hope everyone else decides to act like grownups as well.

Many in our modern times have forgotten that all people everywhere always end up worshiping SOMETHING!! It may be money, sports, celebrities, ect. Most of our younger generation have forgotten God. Are you raising this point to suggest that he didn’t laugh? Because it’s been shown on television repeatedly. I’ve seen him laughing at the joke on CNN, FOX and ABC.
Obama is crude and immature. Let’s move on.

Is the loading dock clear? I have a pallette of faux outrage I need to unload.
First of all, I can’t find where she said she wants him dead…just a cheeky comment about if he wants the country to fail, how about if she wants his kidneys to fail.
Secondly, I still haven’t seen video, or even acknowledgement of video, of Obama laughing at that. Not that I’d care, because she didn’t say she wants him dead.
Now, back to that faux outrage…

“Obama is crude and immature. Let’s move on.”
Oh–if ONLY we could!

“Secondly, I still haven’t seen video, or even acknowledgement of video, of Obama laughing at that.”
Would it matter if you did? You would just dismiss it as a series of muffled sneezes or a look of concern while rapidly nodding his head in disapproval.
This is the same man who didn’t bow to the anti-gay, anti-women, anti-American, anti-religious freedom, anti-Israel King of Saudi Arabia after all.

“Would it matter if you did?”
I dunno…does the truth matter? As for the bow to the King of a foreign country, I have no trouble with that whatsoever. It’s a formal, diplomatic gesture. Anybody with a couple hot brain cells to rally together knows it was not an endorsement of anything at all. In fact, those all bent out of shape about it are freaking hilarious.

I think we all, everyone posting and complaining about anything someone says needs a reality check. Words are just that words. Why spend hours worring over what a person says rather it’s Rush, Hannity, Combs, O’Riley, Janeane Garofalo, or whoever. Instead we should care what is actually done. If you have issues with comedians or pundants stop listening to them. They have a right to say what they want without having to care what you or anyone else thinks.

Ryan C:
Let me introduce you to
Senator Robert C Byrd, Democrat from
West Virgina!
You Dems know a lot about white hoods
and hangings and repressing black people! Or did you conveniently forget
the 1960′s when Racist Democrat
Southern Governors like Lestor Maddox of
Georgia and George Wallace of Alabama
were hosing and beating blacks!
Sorry, I guess that’s an
Inconvenient Truth!
Here’s another Inconvenient Truth:
The 1964 Civil Rights Act was passed
in spite of Democrat Party opposition
by the Republicans in Congress!
Learn some history before you make
a fool of yourself!
