Romney Blasts Obama: ’180 Degree’ Flip on Iran Nukes

During my exclusive “This Week” interview with former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., he blasted President Barack Obama’s handling of U.S. foreign relations, accusing him of “apologizing for America” and arguing that Obama flipped “180 degree” on Iran’s nuclear program.

Here’s our exchange:

STEPHANOPOULOS:  “What do you think of the administration’s response
to the [Iranian] election so far and how would you respond?

ROMNEY:  Well, first of all, the comments by the president last week
that there was a robust debate going on in Iran was obviously entirely
wrong-headed.  What has occurred is that the election is a fraud, the
results are inaccurate, and you’re seeing a brutal repression of the
people as they protest.

The president ought to come out and state exactly those words,
indicate that this has been a terribly managed decision by the
autocratic regime in Iran.

It’s very clear that the president’s policies of going around the
world and apologizing for America aren’t working.  North Korea is not
just saber rattling.  They’ve taken the saber out of the sheath.  Iran
is moving headlong towards nuclearization.  Russia is on the same course
they were on.  And all of the apologies that he provided to the
Europeans have not led any of the European nations to provide additional
support for us in Afghanistan.Look, just sweet talk and criticizing America is not going to enhance freedom in the world.

STEPHANOPOULOS:  Others have argued, Governor, that the president’s
speech and the president’s outreach is one of the things that led to
Hezbollah being defeated in the Lebanese elections last week.  And one
of the things that led to such an outpouring in the streets in
opposition in Iran.  Do you dispute that?

ROMNEY:  You know, I can’t tell you what led to the people running
into the streets in Iran.  I hope, in fact, that they’re very anxious to
see new leadership in that country.  But I can tell you that the results
are what I’m interested in.  Is Iran still pursuing nuclear weaponry?
And there’s no question about at.

And one aspect of what the president said may have been well
received in Iran, but I think it was poorly received in Israel and
around the world.  And that’s when — well, actually, he made a
180-degree flip from what he had said during the campaign.  During the
campaign, when he spoke to AIPAC, he said he would do everything in his
power to keep Iran from having a nuclear weapon.  And then he went to
Cairo and said that no single nation should have the ability to deny
another nation the right to have a nuclear weapon.  That is an
180-degree flip of a dangerous nature.  I’m sure it was welcome in many
streets in the Arab world and in the world that’s most — include the
Persian world, Iran as well.  But that’s not right for America.  That’s
not right for world security.

STEPHANOPOULOS:  I believe the administration has said that they
believe that Iran could have the right to nuclear power with appropriate
safeguards, but not a nuclear weapon.

But what would you do now then?  If you were president — you know,
it’s not just President Ahmadinejad in Iran who said that he believes
Iran should have a right to nuclear power.  It’s the supreme leader.  It
was — every candidate in the race said that Iran should have a right to
pursue nuclear power.

ROMNEY:  We don’t have any question about nuclear power, and that
was not the statement that the president made that was most offensive.
It was his statement that no single nation should have the ability to
deny another nation the right to nuclear weaponry.

Now, of course with regards to nuclear power, we have no problem
under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty for nations to pursue nuclear
power.  And in the case of Iran, it’s pretty clear that’s not what
they’re doing.  When you sit on a lake of oil, you’re not looking for a
new source of energy.  They’re obviously developing this technology for
military purposes.  And offers were made, including by Russia, to
provide the necessary nuclear material for nuclear power, and the
Iranians turned that down.  So let’s not pretend or give into the
Iranian way of thinking, that somehow this is about nuclear power.  It’s
very clearly about nuclear weaponry.  And you also see, of course, the
same kind of outrage coming from North Korea.”

It should come as no surprise that Mr. Romney used the old political trick of quoting accurately-but-out-of-context. What the President actually said in Cairo was, “No single nation should pick and choose which nations hold nuclear weapons. That is why I strongly reaffirmed America’s commitment to seek a world in which no nations hold nuclear weapons.” Exactly the opposite of what Mr. Romney implied, which was that an apologetic Obama was all for a nuclear-armed Iran. It constantly amazes me that supposedly patriotic public figures like Mr. Romney show such a lack of respect for their President and Commander-in-Chief.

This mornings interview with Mitt Romney was an embarrassment to Mr. Romney but also to 75% of Americans. I used to have so much respect for him and admired his approach to our problems in America but now he is just an embarrassment!!!

What would I have to do to ‘think’ (if you want to call it that) like a liberal democrat? Nothing short of a complete head and brain transplant. There is no other way for a healthy mind to come to the conclusions the liberals have come to without being in some kind of political stupor or having a dysfunction that requires they be ‘led’ by the nose. WAKE UP. Snap out of it. The honeymoon is over. This is reality. Can you dig it? (probably not)

These comments by Gov. Romney make me think that he has received his foreign policy briefings from Sarah Palin. For shame, Governor! Even if we cut you some slack and assume that you were simply misinformed, rather than calculatingly dishonest, you should get the facts before you open your mouth next time.

Who’s Mitt Romney again?
Seriously, why does anyone care about what some marginalized republican non-entity like Mitt thinks?
Maybe if he keeps this level of rhetoric up, he can be the next John McCain.

He flip flopped pure and simple. Just as he has done on so many other issues. He has kept Bush’s wiretapping policies when he said he would ditch them. Five day period to review legislation and he pushed the stimulus bill thru in less than that. Transparency, what a joke that has become. The energy bill is a tax bill on the middle class. He has stated that taxing health benefits is now a viable option which again will be a tax on everybody. The list goes on and on

I liked the question about demographics. He has underestimated just how much trouble this party of hate is in. The republican party is a very narrow spectrum of people in this country and to not acknowledge it shows they don’t think there is a problem.

Politics aside, foreign policy aside…… Obama should have hired Mr. Romney to help with the economic crisis. That’s what he does for a living.

Romney is a loser and no amount of Obama bashing is going to make the crazy fringe of his Party like him any better. Limbaugh is in control and he loves, Sarah, the clowns on Fox and Chaney. Sorry Mitt but you need to keep your mitts off the President. Nobody cares what you think.

“He flip flopped pure and simple” – Romney fliped on some very fundamental issues, such as abortion, in order to try to win the presidential nomination. For him to go on national TV to accuse Obama of flip flopping is hilarious. I am not a Democrat, but the Republicans are starting to become a laugh riot. Do they even take themselves seriously any more?

Posted by: Boxcar | June 14, 2009, 2:38 pm 2:38 pm

Mitt Romney’s bold-face lie misstating Obama’s speech, stating what he said was 180 degrees from what he’d agree to, which by the way means he should be there supporting the president since he did in fact say what Romney stated he would agree to, but when given the opportunity to clarify he instead reinforced the lie a second time. Apart from a mild rebuke, George should have called Romney out on why he would purposely lie twice on national TV since he’s clearly misstating the president. Is that to be expected from a potential leader of the republican party? Shame on you Mitt. Shame on George for not pursuing him further on his lying.

Posted by: Jamie | June 14, 2009, 2:46 pm 2:46 pm

The #1 problem with the Bush administration was dishonesty. The GOP needs a leader that is transparent and honest… and does not distort the facts.

Posted by: Steve | June 14, 2009, 2:48 pm 2:48 pm

I was disappointed @ Romney response to George today all he did was criticizing the president he didn’t have any ideas or solutions. I hope he get to watch himself & start to adjust his attitude & start making suggestions that people can be interested in.

Posted by: J Poulard | June 14, 2009, 2:50 pm 2:50 pm

In fact it is George who should be embarrased in fact Obama did state in Cairo no one country should determine who has nuclear weapons. Every canidate during the primaries stated it not acceptable to have a nuclear Iran. The President did state weapons not energy as George attempted to “correct”.

Posted by: Rolly | June 14, 2009, 2:52 pm 2:52 pm

Interesting way to twist Obama’s speech. Who knows if this will be echoed around talk shows tomorrow or not? To me, Mitt Romney represents some intelligent leadership in the GOP, unlike much of what we’ve seen recently. Unfortunately, if he’s perceived as a liar, then he will step back and run with the pack, along with Limbaugh, Cheney, and Gingrich. It will be interesting to see if Mitt can find a way to distinguish himself.

Posted by: Tim McFarland | June 14, 2009, 2:56 pm 2:56 pm

Obama did not say that every country is entitled to a nuclear weapon. It’s a flat out lie. While George did push back he was hesitant and perhaps too polite in the face of Romney’s demagoguery. While many had hoped that the Republican Party would cooperate and play the role of the loyal opposition, it’s clear from Romney’s baseless attacks that they intend to distort, mislead and even out right lie whenever and wherever they can. The mainstream media will have to make a choice; either call them out on their misinformation campaign or collude with them. If they are committed to telling the truth, they will do the former.

Posted by: roxsteady | June 14, 2009, 3:05 pm 3:05 pm

Unfortunately, George Stephanopoulos never once asked Mitt to name which speech Obama made any apologies in. You blew it George. By allowing that idiot to spew this garbage and repeatedly not correct or challenge his asertions you looked equally ignorant. Don’t worry about Mitt though because sadly for him, Michael Steele was actually right about one thing and that’s that Mitt will never be elected president because he’s a morman. Like it or not, the saltines who are the real base of the Republican party will never allow him to represent their party no matter how desparate. This is actually good news because instead, they may nominate that idiot Sarah Palin. Can’t you just the debates! Obama would calmly and quickly crush this moron! Stay home Sarah! This is too easy!

A flat out lie? Hardly. Not precisely quoted? Perhaps, but the point is accurate. What Obama did say is that no ONE country[emphasis mine]should determine who has nuclear weapons. This is a far cry from what he said during the campaign and in fact a 180 degree “flip flop”. What GROUP of nations is going to stop nuclear Iran?? The UN…..a joke for the last 50+ years. NATO??? This always makes me laugh. We are the only country to use nukes on civilians, and we attack someone new about every other year or so. Iran obviously has never used nukes, and they have not attacked anyone preemptively in 250 years. Maybe we should hand our nukes to them. Just kidding. As Ron Paul has noted, we just need to mind our own business especially considering the fact that we have destroyed our country financially.

Posted by: Huh | June 14, 2009, 4:49 pm 4:49 pm

has anyone forgotten the real issue here…how about it being a country that blatantly sells weapons to terrorist coming in control of nuclear weapons. And its not taking it out of context when Obama did say no country has the right to tell another country if they can have nuclear weapons. If Obama really wants to set an example of america have him disarm us for nuclear weapons…oh wait he won’t for the simple fact we need them just in case. Quit bashing Romney b/c the only reason Obama won was b/c 98% of the african-american population voted for the race and not for the politics…even young african-american males in harlem when asked by Howard Stern who they were voting for they said Obama and he asked if it was b/c of his stance on pro-life, keeping our troops in Iraq, and not taxing businesses more and they said yeah that was it…come on this was political election in our country that was won on race and not politics so don’t bash and say obama won b/c their is a narrow amount of republicans in the country b/c there are quite a few just this election was won on race not politics.

Hey Boxcar – President Obama has done more in his first 100 days in office than Bush did in 8 years and as far as being held to a higher standard, the previous administration had that bar so low that the Obamas jumped over it the day they moved into the White House. Let me know when any of the Presidents new policies actually cost you something because that’s all we here from the right is how this is going to cost Americans, as if the trillion $ deficit and a spiraling economy were brought on by this administration and not the previous one! It may be true that Obama apologized for all the wrong moves by America during the Bush years. The strategy that was employed by Reagan against the Soviets do NOT work for multiple nations that aren’t truly challenging the military might of America. They are fighting America as rebel states and they are able to recruit allies based on their appeal to their plight. Obama is employing a different strategy that is worth trying. The logical conclusion to all the threats is indeed use of force. And the more the US use force against an obvious underdog makes America looks like a big bad bully. Have you heard Obama say ‘we’ as strong nation should have more confidence in ourselves when we act against these rogue nations. Iran and North Korea are from threat to the US. It’s true that terrorism can probably penetrate our society and attack us like 9/11. I’m not sure we can stop that 100% of the time but here’s one thing we can do, if that happens we will have the moral authority to respond. We will have more justification than guessing wrong on motivation of other countries.
Clearly Iraq was a bad move because there was not evidence to show that they threatened America. I don’t know the motivation by Bush and Cheney but it seemed they had already planned on attacking Iraq even before 9/11 event. It bothers me and I hope those that love this country that perhaps there was misuse of power to use the 9/11 tragedy to pursue personal goals. To avoid miscalculations and falsely accusing these men, I will defer all that to One who knows our hearts.
Love this country, it is the only one you’ve got.

Ironic how the majority of people that bob their head up and down and mutter yes, yes,Mit, haven’t even heard Obama’s speech. Maybe bits and pieces, the bits they want to stretch into bytes. And I’m always amazed at how critical and full of doom they are at the “the way the country is heading” It took George Bush 8 years to rip this country to shreds, ruin our relationships with our allies, and destroy jobs, lives, the constitution, and 401k’s. Thank God we didn’t give him social security to “invest”. Yet Obama is expected to stop the downward progression brought on by the abismal acts of the last administration, and fix everything in 5 months. Romney needs to realize people will call him out on his slanted versions of the truth. At least those of us that are paying attention.

Posted by: catsrboss | June 14, 2009, 6:27 pm 6:27 pm

So Romney “doesn’t know” if Obama’s tactics helped defeat Hezbollah or led Iranians to rioting, but he knows Obama’s responsible for N.Korea’s saber rattling, etc? Give me a break.
While he’s talking about flip-flops, why doesn’t he explain his flip-flop over abortion and why, in Spring ’08 after accepting $1.4 million in campaign contributions for the health care industry, he flipped over to the opinion that the healthcare industry should be de-regulated!

Very interesting -
All I hear is complain, complain and complain about Obama’s policy and attacks of his policies without proposing a solution and as a True Republican, this troubles me about the future of the party. Please we want solutions, not unfounded attacks and lies.
George Stephanopoulos asked “But what would you do now then? If you were president…?” Instead of proposing a solution or answering the question, Romney again went on a rant of criticism and attack on Obama’s Policy. This again goes a long way to cement the fact that the Republican Party don’t have a solution to any problem or perhaps are devoid of ideas. All they do is complain, accuse, criticize and incite people to violence – But no solution and that is pathetic. Nonetheless, I must give Romney, some credit, in that unlike others, he only criticizes the President’s policy (although wrongly), not the President himself and that is a smart thing to do…

How much better we would be if Romney had been elected rather than a spendthrift who is enslaving our children and grandchildren with debt and also decreasing respect for this wonderful country worldwide. Look at the nations that have followed the liberal agenda of Obama–they are weaker and have huge problsms but some here are too blind to see the truth but only extend their hands for handouts!

I find it fascinating that Mitt Romney can travel in time. He must have figured out the physics of time travel, because only then would he be able to make the statement that the Iranian election was a “fraud”, without so much as even waiting for a level examination of the results.
This is the problem I have, and most of the country has, with right wing neo-conservative agenda. They dig themselves deep into positions that are probably wrong in the first place, and then they are too stubborn to look at the facts. Worse yet, they try to convince the rest of the country to believe things that are not true (i.e. Iraq’s WMDs) in order to push their agenda. All I can say is, thank God the country woke up and voted most of these right-wing nut jobs out of office in 2006 & 2008.

What the voters of America seem to be missing is that there is no Dem or Repub party. There are only political opportunists and real people. The opportunists have sold you all a bill of goods and you have bought it. We are all going to suffer greatly as a result. America has no leader, only a fool who was in the right place at the right time to become the patsy of the other opportunists who want full government control over everything – Auto industry, banking, healthcare, etc. As long as they have their “shining star Obama” in front of the cameras, the dirty work can be done behind the scenes. It won’t be long before Iran, N. Korea, Russia, and others unite against us. If you thing the Big O can stop it, you deserve what you get.

Either that or he did do his homework like during the election. Someone like this with the ‘Red Button’ in their hand. No thanks.

George, I wished you would have pusued Mr. Romney a little harder. That was a big misquote. Mr. Romney’s intentional misquoting of the Obama speak in Cairo is the same old politics of the Republican Party. If you say it over an over, the weak minded will be brainwashed into believing it. Either that or he did not do his homework like during the election. Someone like this with the ‘Red Button’ in their hand. No thanks.

Who are the people leaving comments about this article? How could people in our country be so ignorant? Iran’s leader has said, time and again, that he is determined to destroy Israel and the US. The election is a fraud over there. They pretty much have a nuclear weapon. We have one of the weakest presidents in US history. Connect the dots people. The current Iranian leadership wants to destroy our country. Period.

Bob Neale Your comment is a perfect example of how easily swayed people are by the main stream media. It was not Sarah Palin that said she could see Russia from her house, it was Tina Fey AS Sarah Palin. What Sarah had said is that there is an island in Alaska that you can see Russia from. It is called Little Diomede. Look at a globe, you’ll see that there is only 55 miles between this island and Russia.

funny how dishonest you say Bush was when this admin clearly lies about job creation and transparancy. How many tax cheats can you count in this administration? Oh yeah thats Bush’s fault too. In a few months your Bush bashing backstop has to end. This is Obama’s job now. Obama has ran our debt up more than ANY other president in history. But hey he has only been in office for about 6 months.

Bob Neale- Palin never said she could see Russia from her house- Tina Fey did- Palin said that as Governor, with Russia on her border she had dealings with them on trade and other similar issues. News Flash TINA FEY IS NOT SARA PALIN- it was a satire- Obama- did speak of nuclear weapons in Cairo- please watch it again on you tube. e is selling Israel down the river while pandering to the Arabs, A foolish man with no real experience does this- go ask Jimmy Carter

Mr. Stephanopoulis was correct but Mr. Romney was being disingenuos on ABC’s “This Week” Jun 14th. Check the facts!
Obama never affirmed the right of a nation to have nuclear weapons.
Rather, he denounced the notion of a single nation picking and choosing which countries can or cannot have nuclear weapons. There is a big difference.
What Mitt Romney specifically claimed is that Obama said “no single nation should have the ability to deny another nation the right to have a nuclear weapon.”
What Obabma actually said was:
No single nation should pick and choose which nations hold nuclear weapons.
Obama never affirmed the right of a nation to have nuclear weapons.
Rather, he denounced the notion of a single nation picking and choosing which countries can or cannot have nuclear weapons. There is a big difference.

Just keep on paying your taxes and worrying about that mild flu, North Korea and Iran, and partisan politics.
Meanwhile in Italy, two Japanese men were caught smuggling $134 BILLION in U.S. Treasury Bonds, headed to the Swiss Bank.
Let’s just hope THAT story never makes it to mainstream news (wink, wink).

You people crack me up. At what point are you going to wake up and realize that you made a mistake? Obama is taking you down the rosey trail to socialism and you keep saying “give him more time” It is indeed “you” who are lying to yourselves if you think this president has your best interest at heart. Wake up and smell the coffee, if you can still afford it.

You liberals crack me up. “Give him more time”, each time he opens his mouth it is to take more away from the working class and give it away to those who havent’ earned it. Our enemies see him as weak and sniveling as do nearly half of Americans. Do you forget that Obama only won the popular election by about 4 million votes? He’ll have more time and I hope there are enough of you still out there that are contacting your representatives to stop the bleeding of the Middle class. Good luck on your “Change” I truly hope you don’t live to regret it.

Why do they still asking Romney about opinions??? Why we discussing Romney??

Posted by: John | June 17, 2009, 7:02 am 7:02 am

Mr. Romney….most of the people who know better feel that Obama has done the right thing to say just a few things and wait. Even Mr. Kissinger said on the Van Sustern show that while he voted for Mc Cain…he disagrees with him on this Iran problem. He feels he is doing the right thing to sit and wait. He should know…he lived through this so I think I will take his opinion over yours anyday. I think you republicans stay up nights to think of one more thing to bash our President about. How about some good old American loyalty? I stood up for Bush when 9/11 came and I did not say it was his fault but if the shoe was on the othr foot….could you say the same?

Once again Mr. Romney you distort the facts…surprise, surprise. Our president did an outstanding job in his speech a few weeks ago and the young people of Iran listened and liked what they heard. Look at the signs they carry “Yes We Can” and “Change”. How can you say he has not influenced them in a good way. They like our president and want to be friends with America..at least the young ones do. This is very important for future talks. His style is to hold back, think and then react. This is a sign of an intelligent person not someone who goes off without all the facts. Unfortunately, you and your party refuse to admit this but the world sees it. I think it is time to stop being the party of negativity. Surely President Obama has done one thing you can approve of?

I wish Romney were President.

Setting Obama draws line in the sand to the worlds dicatators invited to the white house for the 4th of July! He did claim do not cross that line but Km Jong Il is not “charmed by the one” and decided that it would be such a more spectacular show with his form of “fireworks” aimed at Hawaii (stinks for me that I happen to live in Kihei Maui) while Obama awaits the 4ht of July Ahmedinajhad has his anti-protestesters do what they do best and kill innocent protesters on the street, what is Obama saying now I”m really not pleased so I’m tellin, but that doesnt scare Kim Jong Il and he decides to give Hawaii a blaze of glory extrodinaire! Come on folks!!!
The charade has got to stop, Obama needs to step down and let someone with experience take over (like Romney, who has ran a businesses beautifully and Governed a state as well, before there is no America left. What is Obama sorry about anyway? Thanks but no thanks Oprah, we want a refund on this dud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mr. Romney you and yours continue to mis-quote our president. He said no one should pick and choose who should have neuclear weapons. I really think you and yours believe the rest of the world is stupid. We pay attention to his speeches and know when you are picking them apart. All of this, however, has not hurt his ratings but your continue to drop. What does that tell you?

Posted by: talmag | June 25, 2009, 10:25 am 10:25 am

You all are so blind. Iran is a regime. Not looking for better “energy power” but better weaponry power…always have always will. Obama is a lame excuse for a President. I’m not a fan of Romney or GOP, but I am sure we need better in the White House than the idiot that is there now. A teleprompter can make ANYONE sound smart. Policies will show how smart he is NOT. Green Jobs, Luau’s, Date Nights, Golfing, Dinner Out, Burger Joints…..does not make a good President.
