Letterman Apologizes to Palin — For Real This Time

ABC News’ Rick Klein and Kristina Wong report: After a week of controversy over what he’s calling a “bad joke,” David Letterman today directly apologized to Gov. Sarah Palin and her family.

"The joke, really, in and of itself, can't be defended," Letterman said, in taping tonight’s “Late Show with David Letterman,” per the AP.

"I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke," Letterman said. "It's not your fault that it was misunderstood, it's my fault that it was misunderstood."

He apologized to Palin's oldest daughters - at whom the joke was directed, "and also to the governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke," he said. "I'm sorry about it, and I'll try to do better in the future."

“I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception,” he said, and claimed full responsibility for his comments.

Two weeks ago, on his program, Letterman joked about the governor’s recent trip to New York: "One awkward moment for Sarah Palin at the Yankee game, during the seventh inning, her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez."

The joke seemed directed at Palin’s 18-year-old daughter Bristol, who is an unwed mother. However, it was Palin’s 14-year-old daughter, Willow, that accompanied the governor to New York.

Letterman later explained he had indeed confused the two daughters and had Bristol in mind when he made the joke, but Gov. Palin interpreted it as directed to Willow.

Palin spoke out against Letterman’s comments on NBC’s “Today” show, and called upon the public to rise up in opposition. Supporters have called for Letterman’s firing, even starting a website, www.firedavidletterman.com.

Letterman’s apology won’t do any good. Sarah and her worshipers think she is the First Lady of the U.S.A. and untouchable no matter how viciously she attacks others or exploits her own children. Sarah enjoys playing the martyr far too much to move on.

Good grief this woman will do anything to stay in the public eye. Those folks that find her what? charming,? certainly not bright, must be in pig heaven. How the hell long is she going to take this piece of trivia?

Would someone PLEASE tell Sarah Palin to shut up already and leave David Letterman alone. She is beginning to remind me of Barbara Bush’s comments a few years about another person whose nomenclature should be “witch” but starting with a different letter. Palin – go home and hide your face and leave us alone already.

Hillary exploited HER daughter far more than Palin ever exploited Bristol or Willow. And boy didn’t you liberals scream bloody murder when a news commentator said that Chelsea Clinton was “pimped out”! I doubt if SATAN himself could rank as low as that news commentator.
Obama himself said that family members (of politicians) are off limits to jokes or commentary. Evidently that only applies to families of liberal politicians.

What has Sarah Palin ever done to David Letterman??? The joke was a slam to all mothers with daughters. Shame on him. He gets very defensive when someone talks about his family. For him to bring the daughter into his show is disgusting. I will never watch the show again. You would think the writers would have something better to joke about. How about Nancy Polosi.

dave only did this so that when sarah continues her trash talking, she’ll completely look the fool.
whatever it takes to shut the old bag up is fine by me.

I have been a fan of David Letterman for years, and I was never a fan of Sarah Palin, but I have to say his joke was in bad taste. Leave the girls alone Dave! They’re young and dealing with enough without you adding to their pain! Also, you had a child out of wedlock when you were plenty old enough to know better.

“when can we hear sarah palin’s apology to all those rape victims back in alaska that she charged for their rape kits?”
That story was debunked MONTHS ago, genius. Lay off the Kool-Aid.

Posted by: Stacey | June 15, 2009, 9:47 pm 9:47 pm

I just love some of these posts. Palin takes a trip to New York. Very little publicity about it. David Letterman decides to make jokes about her and her daughter. Then when she gets offended, all of you want her to shut up and go back to Alaska.
First of all, if you are in politics, then you ask for whatever you get, but the children should never be dragged into the crap. Secondly, we have heard very little from Palin herself since the election, but there are those who invoke her name at every turn like the race is still on. She must be concerning someone, since certain segments of ther population think we need to hear negative thoughts about her for four years.
The election is over. She is not vice-president. And anyone in Alaska who does not agree with her policies can vote against her when she runs for govenor again.
Besides, this smacks of ratings and nothing else. Conan has been kicking Letterman’s a$$ and he needed the publicity. I remember when Letterman used to be the shocker, the extreme. Now, if I can’t get to sleep, I put the tv on CBS at 11:30pm. Works like a charm.

Posted by: Melanie | June 15, 2009, 9:54 pm 9:54 pm

You know, maybe … just maybe … if Letterman was axed for his comments, other talk show hosts would also be axed and SNL would not be able to make fun of Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin to make them appear stupid, dumb or worse … and we could finally have a nation back that doesn’t laugh at ridiculing, demeaning and devaluing jokes that always were and always will be tasteless to the point of being contemptable.

Posted by: Rob | June 15, 2009, 9:55 pm 9:55 pm

Conservatives are never more passionate than when they are indignant, which Palin knows and exploits this to the fullest. She’ll keep flogging Letterman for a while, and keep working on cowing all media people in preparation for her 2012 run.

Posted by: billp | June 15, 2009, 9:59 pm 9:59 pm

I think it will end here. Sarah’s handlers will pull her aside and say “you better take the apology.” and she’ll say ; “Really?” and they’ll say “kinda ya” and she’ll be all like “awrighty” and she’ll be all like “I knewya had it in ya Dave! I’ll see you in 2012 and we can do that interview.”and Dave will be all smiling condescendingly and thanking God he’s not Don Imus and hating the US for getting so stupid over the past 20 years.

“but there are those who invoke her name at every turn like the race is still on.”
Liberals require a target to hate, especially those that refuse to see the world as they do. They simply can’t accept victory and enjoy the utopia that Obama has brought them. They claim Palin is irrelevant but obsess about her constantly. Sure, it’s irrational, but that’s why liberalism is a mental disorder. It needs to be defeated if we ever hope to restore our republic.

This should NOT be about partisan politics. Both sides of the political fence should be outraged, whenever this happens to ANY child of ANY politician. It was odious when David Shuster of MSNBC made a similar crack about Chelsea Clinton. Shuster was suspended, and the network apologized to the Clintons. Where is the CBS apology to the Palins? Why hasn’t Letterman been suspended? This is about a washed up late night host who is now just a dirty old man. This is about a mean spirited, former comedian demeaning a young girl with ignorant, degrading, sexual rhetoric. When misogynistic jokes become as unacceptable as racist jokes, then, and only then, will we know we’ve made progress in the battle for gender equality

Posted by: NDMOMx2 | June 15, 2009, 10:06 pm 10:06 pm

Hasn’t Dave apologized enough already? We’ve all said something tasteless at some point or another. Just because you’re a professional doesn’t mean you won’t slip every now and then. Get over it.

Posted by: sowhat | June 15, 2009, 10:08 pm 10:08 pm

“Liberals require a target to hate,” No. Liberals are just amazed at how the Republicans are seemingly committed to self-destruction by supporting people who are even more stupid than them as presidential and vice-presidential candidates. Not to mention a candidate who told a “joke” at least as bad about Chelsea Clinton, which went entirely under their radar.

Posted by: Starman | June 15, 2009, 10:09 pm 10:09 pm

It seems to me that the only one that should be apologizing to everyone is John McCain for bringing Sarah Palin into the public arena to begin with.

lay off what koolaid, stacy? the story was never debunked. sarah palin and her police chief did indeed charge rape victims for their kits. the state was so embarrassed by wasilla’s practices that they had to pass a law banning it. while sarah’s police chief was giving interviews to the newspaper speaking his opposition against paying for the rape kits, you can’t tell me that sarah didn’t know. she was a mayor of a town of 5000! liek she doesn’t know what her chief was doing. if dave is responsible for a simple oversight by his staff about a joke then sarah palin is COMPLETELY RESPONSIBLE for her police cheif charging for rape kits!!!!!!!!!!!!

“Liberals are just amazed at how the Republicans are seemingly committed to self-destruction…”
Why do liberals care? They hate the GOP. It’s obvious liberals fear her. If they didn’t why would they even bother commenting about someone so “stupid” and “irrelevant” when Democrats run all three branches of government? Unless they’re deranged, of course. And woman-haters.

There was never this much fuss when Leno ripped off a senile old man to get his antique car at a bargain price. Or is Sarah ok with abusing the elderly? I’d let Dave visit my teenage daughter, but I’d never let Leno near my elderly relative. Yes, Dave’s joke was in bad taste. He admits that, regrets the joke, and has apologized. He’s a good guy who made a bad joke. Who has never cracked a joke they immediately regretted? Sarah???

Posted by: Getoverit | June 15, 2009, 10:39 pm 10:39 pm

birdy, it was investigated to death. There is NO RECORD of a victim ever being charged for a rape kit in Wasilla. Period. Sheesh, give it a rest. It’s an Obamabot smear and myth that died a long time ago.
You should be much more worried about the damage Obama is doing to your future than about Sarah Palin’s mayorship years ago. Move on with your life.

Posted by: Stacey | June 15, 2009, 11:02 pm 11:02 pm

So Dave wants to apologize – again. I wonder if this apology will be like his last one, you know, with him being smug in the fact that the audience would accept anything he said while he smirked and insulted and was totally insincere with the apology that wasn’t an apology.
There was no reason for him to attack the Palins’ children. It does not matter if their mother is in politics or not – there are some lines that just should not be crossed. Attacking innocent children is one of them.
Here you have an old man making sexual comments about young girls. Fourteen or eighteen, the comment was still wrong. In fact, the comment would be wrong directed to any female, regardless of age. Unfortunately, his female audience was so desensitized that they thought the “joke” was funny. I wonder how many were parents? I wonder how many of them had daughters that got pregnant at a young age? I bet there were plenty of those parents sitting right there in that audience when he made that “joke.” I wonder if they felt just a little bit uncomfortable when they laughed at that joke?
The irony of it is that Letterman is in no position to pass judgment or make jokes about anyone since his own child was born out of wedlock. How old was Dave when that happened? Hmm, if I remember correctly, Dave’s little Harry was a guest at his Daddy’s
and Mommy’s wedding. How many jokes can we get out of that??? Looks like Dave is practicing one hell of a double standard.
I wonder how much Old Dave would like it if someone made a joke about old men having babies out of wedlock. Shouldn’t he have known better??? Let’s see, Little Harry’s parents were not married when he was born. What does that make Little Harry???
Dave doesn’t like anyone to question him about this subject, but hey, he left himself open to this when he made jokes about other people in similar circumstances, didn’t he????. But wait a minute, since we can’t get at Dave, let’s go after his kid. Let’s call him a bunch of names (I can think of a few relating to Little Harry’s specific set of circumstances) and let’s do it in front of a nationwide audience. Wouldn’t that be fun???
Why not? There’s nothing wrong with getting your giggle on…
That may be so, but it would be totally wrong and I would never do it. I think you have to be a special type of mean to do something like that. Unfortunately, Old Dave didn’t feel that way,
Like I said, some lines should never be crossed, no matter how much you dislike the parent.

I’d like to see Sarah Palin AND Bristol (and any other family members and friends that want to participate) start the Palin Unwed Mothers Charity Homes across the United States, making sure there is ONE in EVERY CITY in AMERICA, BY working tirelessly, appearing on all news shows, entertainment and otherwise including David Letterman’s so they can begin addressing the consequences to the abstinance only programs that result in teenage pregnancy PLUS get their message out to all middle & high school students about the CONSEQUENCES to having sex as a teenager and how much it costs, emotionally, physically, financially, AND spiritually. I’d like to see Sarah Palin stump ALL OVER THE USA stating how she had to keep her daughter Bristol on her great insurance plan so she could have the best healthcare in America as she gave birth since Palin’s boyfriend did not have a job NOR insurance….I’d like to see Sarah Palin use her CELEBRITY to make sure that any PREGNANT, SCARED, ALONE, DESTITUTE, young woman without means or support has a SAFE PLACE to go to BIRTH her child in peace…& then be provided the opportunity to complete her high-school education WHILE someone is watching her child…so that this unwed teen can go on to be a productive member of society….& not fall into prostitution, shotgun marriages, drugs, or worse…But NO, All I get is Sarah Palin outraged…I’m outraged that she isn’t turning this GRAND OPPORTUNITY to speak up about something she knows ALL about & use her mighty political FUND RAISING abilities to BETTER USE than what she has been doing since losing the election….YOUNG WOMEN OF AMERICA NEED PROTECTION & THEY NEED A VOICE & THEY NEED SUPPORT THAT OUR OWN GOVERNMENT & SCHOOLS & FAMILIES DON’T GIVE THEM….YOUNG GIRLS WISH THEY WERE BRISTOL….MOST OF THEM DON’T EVEN COME CLOSE!!! The story of sarah palin making women RAPED in Alaska pay for the rape kits was never debunked because it is the truth. sarah is a much bigger sexist then David Lettermen will ever be as proven by her attacks on 18-year-old Levi Johnston and her using the power of her office to go after her sisters State Trooper husband. sarah is a sexist as proven by her winking, flirting and playing the martyr. The helpless little Alaskan female who big bad Lettermen and the media are abusing. When is sarah going to apologize to the rape victims of her home state and when is she going to apologize to the American people for being an annoying hypocrite? John McCain if you really cared about the country why did you unleashed this menace, this scourge (The Female Barracuda) upon us?

Folks, this is above all a business. Letterman was told about advertisers concerns and traction from both sides regarding his “joke”. The first “apology” was “kidding on the square”, now, the second is out of management concern.

“Liberals don’t “fear Palin. She is the best, positive advertising the Democratic party could ask for – short of Hannity and Limbaugh.”
Really?
A recent Gallup poll showed that there has been an INCREASE in the number of Americans who call themselves conservatives, outnumbering self-described liberals by a 2-to-1 margin. The 40 percent figure for conservatives is the highest in nearly two decades.
Hannity’s and Rush’s ratings and audiences are at all-time highs.
And how exactly does all this help the Democratic Party? We’re dying to know.

ENOUGH OF PALIN ALREADY!!!
Why is this woman still in the news? She contributes nothing, yet every time I look at any kind of news source, there she is! Having said that, it’s her turn to apologize now for calling Obama a “terrorist” during the campaign. Why should she get a free pass??

Posted by: js45601 | June 16, 2009, 8:20 am 8:20 am

Stacey – Less than 1 in 4 identify themselves as Republican according to a large poll done by Pew Research. Republicans are sitting at 23% of people identifying themselves as Republican.
As for that Gallup poll you so proudly promote, I recommend you read the information that goes with the statistics. Democrats are more likely to fall in the moderate category which proves my point about Palin being the best advertising for the Democratic party.
The Republican party has been hi-jacked by those on the far right and Palin speaks for the far-right. The party will forever remain a minority party if it continues to placate the ever dwindling far-right base.
The fact that the hate-filled, bigoted Hannity & Rush get so much attention and adoration from your party is not good.

Posted by: Sammy | June 16, 2009, 11:46 am 11:46 am

I was offended, but Letterman’s apology sounded sincere and.
Still, many (certainly not the majority but a significant number) on the left think it’s OK to bash anyone on the right — and their children.
For example, you don’t catch Conan, Letterman, Craig Ferguson and even nice-guy Leno accidentally doing sexual jokes about Obama’s kids. But they *ALL* have done nasty, sexual jokes about Palins’s kids. That’s not a right or left issue — it’s just wrong.
But, I think Letterman’s apology was sincere and hope this is over. When somebody is sincere in their apology, let’s move on.

Posted by: lee | June 16, 2009, 11:58 am 11:58 am

Letterman did indeed take the high road. by apologizing, he defused a bubmling woman and the lemmings who support her. He also obscured the real brunt of the joke; it’s not about her daughter getting knocked up, the joke is really a crack on her ability as a parent to get her children to adulthood without children of their own.

Posted by: tom | June 16, 2009, 12:44 pm 12:44 pm

Cheryl,
You’re right (mostly) about the off-color comment about our First Lady. No person, liberal or conservative, should tolorate that type of uninvited personal name-calling attacks. Period. It used to be “officials are OK, spouses are off-limits unless they say something out of line, kids are WAY off-limits”. But, there are a few subtle, but important, differences between these two unnecessary situations that put them in different categories.
First, ALL national conservatives that I’ve seen have immediately repudiated and distanced themselves from that nasty comment about Mrs. Obama. And they should have. And as a Black conservative, I certainly do too. That wasn’t the case with Letterman’s sexual joke involving an underage kid, though kudos to N.O.W. and many other liberals for doing so. However, others tried to politicize it and trash Todd and Sarah Palin for not taking the “joke” about their daughter. Both jokes are at best in poor taste, regardless of politics, and depending on the interpretation of one, illegal.
Second, the guy who made the original comment is not an elected official, but a South Carolina “activist”, described as “an early backer of George W Bush”. Come on. He has no position or authority, so no matter how distasteful or wrong, it’s realistically hard to get a national frenzy going about what some guy said who holds no office, though the news media will try. If we did that, we’d have a national frenzy every week about what people on both sides say in the company cafeteria. Really. Why do you care what an “activist” thinks?
Yes, yes, I know, I know, Letterman is not a public official either. But, he is a national media figure. And, by definition, speaking to millions of people about a sexual joke about an underage kid (or initially interpreted by many to be rape because of only the 14-year old’s presence though Dave said that wasn’t his target), it was in the national media and part of our national discussion the instant it left Letterman’s mouth. On the other hand, we don’t even know who this other wiseguy is.
Third, you may disagree on this point, but while I agree spouses are off-limits, I do not believe that slamming an adult is the same thing as slamming underage kids. Both of these cases were wrong and unacceptable, but there are degrees of badness, and though admittedly not an exact analogy, it’s kind of like slander vs talking about child rape. Slander’s not cool, but it’s not in the same ballpark as talk about statutory rape.
Fourth, the guy apparently apologized immediately. Letterman took a couple of days, and gave a half-joking apology, then finally gave what was accepted by most, including me, (and according to the news, by the Palins) as a sincere apology a couple of more days later.
Since most, including the Palins, have accepted Letterman’s apology, I agree with those who say it’s time to move on. After all, whether you’re on the right or left, you can’t talk for a living and never say anything wrong. When you address the issue and both sides come to an understanding, move on.

I am so glad that Sarah Palin is standing up for her daughters. Sarah Palin is a gracious, decent, intelligent woman and deserves to be treated better by the media. Most of America agrees. David Letterman should be fired. This comment scripted, rehearsed and taped was about LITTLE GIRLS. Don Imus was fired for racial comments – the same should hold true for Letterman. The ONLY reason he apologized was because his feet were held to the fire.
God help us if these comments had been about Sasha and Malia!

Posted by: Nancy | June 16, 2009, 10:14 pm 10:14 pm

David Letterman ceased being funny soooooooo long ago. The increasingly vicious and smarmy attacks he levels at those who don’t share his liberal views
are beyond reprehensible. But this sort of thing has been going on with late night comedians for many years. I think it simply represents a society without morals, common decency, respect for it’s leaders (or at least the Office they hold), etc. etc. etc. I could go on, but why? Everything crass and vulgar and crude and lascivious is EVERYWHERE in society. Anyway, I don’t watch Letterman anymore. Haven’t for years.
Actually, I was wondering … How would Dave have felt if comedians were ridiculing him and his “knocked up” shack-up, Regina Lasko??
I have LOTS more respect for Sarah Palin than I do for Letterman.
