David Letterman ceased being funny soooooooo long ago. The increasingly vicious and smarmy attacks he levels at those who don't share his liberal views
are beyond reprehensible. But this sort of thing has been going on with late night comedians for many years. I think it simply represents a society without morals, common decency, respect for it's leaders (or at least the Office they hold), etc. etc. etc. I could go on, but why? Everything crass and vulgar and crude and lascivious is EVERYWHERE in society. Anyway, I don't watch Letterman anymore. Haven't for years.
Actually, I was wondering ... How would Dave have felt if comedians were ridiculing him and his "knocked up" shack-up, Regina Lasko??
I have LOTS more respect for Sarah Palin than I do for Letterman.

David Letterman should be fired. This comment scripted, rehearsed and taped was about LITTLE GIRLS. Don Imus was fired for racial comments - the same should hold true for Letterman. The ONLY reason he apologized was because his feet were held to the fire.
God help us if these comments had been about Sasha and Malia!

I am so glad that Sarah Palin is standing up for her daughters. Sarah Palin is a gracious, decent, intelligent woman and deserves to be treated better by the media. Most of America agrees. Many of the comments on this page are sickening, heartless, cruel, and shameful. What has happened to common decency?

Cheryl,
You're right (mostly) about the off-color comment about our First Lady. No person, liberal or conservative, should tolorate that type of uninvited personal name-calling attacks. Period. It used to be "officials are OK, spouses are off-limits unless they say something out of line, kids are WAY off-limits". But, there are a few subtle, but important, differences between these two unnecessary situations that put them in different categories.
First, ALL national conservatives that I've seen have immediately repudiated and distanced themselves from that nasty comment about Mrs. Obama. And they should have. And as a Black conservative, I certainly do too. That wasn't the case with Letterman's sexual joke involving an underage kid, though kudos to N.O.W. and many other liberals for doing so. However, others tried to politicize it and trash Todd and Sarah Palin for not taking the "joke" about their daughter. Both jokes are at best in poor taste, regardless of politics, and depending on the interpretation of one, illegal.
Second, the guy who made the original comment is not an elected official, but a South Carolina "activist", described as "an early backer of George W Bush". Come on. He has no position or authority, so no matter how distasteful or wrong, it's realistically hard to get a national frenzy going about what some guy said who holds no office, though the news media will try. If we did that, we'd have a national frenzy every week about what people on both sides say in the company cafeteria. Really. Why do you care what an "activist" thinks?
Yes, yes, I know, I know, Letterman is not a public official either. But, he is a national media figure. And, by definition, speaking to millions of people about a sexual joke about an underage kid (or initially interpreted by many to be rape because of only the 14-year old's presence though Dave said that wasn't his target), it was in the national media and part of our national discussion the instant it left Letterman's mouth. On the other hand, we don't even know who this other wiseguy is.
Third, you may disagree on this point, but while I agree spouses are off-limits, I do not believe that slamming an adult is the same thing as slamming underage kids. Both of these cases were wrong and unacceptable, but there are degrees of badness, and though admittedly not an exact analogy, it's kind of like slander vs talking about child rape. Slander's not cool, but it's not in the same ballpark as talk about statutory rape.
Fourth, the guy apparently apologized immediately. Letterman took a couple of days, and gave a half-joking apology, then finally gave what was accepted by most, including me, (and according to the news, by the Palins) as a sincere apology a couple of more days later.
Since most, including the Palins, have accepted Letterman's apology, I agree with those who say it's time to move on. After all, whether you're on the right or left, you can't talk for a living and never say anything wrong. When you address the issue and both sides come to an understanding, move on.

Letterman did indeed take the high road. by apologizing, he defused a bubmling woman and the lemmings who support her. He also obscured the real brunt of the joke; it's not about her daughter getting knocked up, the joke is really a crack on her ability as a parent to get her children to adulthood without children of their own.

I was offended, but Letterman's apology sounded sincere and.
Still, many (certainly not the majority but a significant number) on the left think it's OK to bash anyone on the right -- and their children.
For example, you don't catch Conan, Letterman, Craig Ferguson and even nice-guy Leno accidentally doing sexual jokes about Obama's kids. But they *ALL* have done nasty, sexual jokes about Palins's kids. That's not a right or left issue -- it's just wrong.
But, I think Letterman's apology was sincere and hope this is over. When somebody is sincere in their apology, let's move on.

Palin is God's gift to Democrats. May she never be smart enough to shut up and sit down.
Palin is the best insurance policy Democrats have of staying in power. Palin is another Republican graduate of Emmet Kelly's Clown College.

"The party will forever remain a minority party if it continues to placate the ever dwindling far-right base."
Again, why do you care? You don't want the GOP in power.
