Father’s Day for the Obama Girls
ABC's Vija Udenans Reports: Father’s Day weekend for the Obama girls included a ride in the presidential motorcade to get frozen custard from The Dairy Godmother on Saturday afternoon. Twelve dark vehicles wound thru small side streets to the Del Ray section of Alexandria, Virginia, a suburb of Washington.
Liz Davis, owner of the frozen custard shop, said she had about 4 minutes of “lag time” between knowing she would have “a visitor” and the President walking in with his daughters.
Although the flavor of the day was posted as butter pecan, the President ordered a small cup of vanilla frozen custard with hot fudge and toasted almonds.
Sasha, his youngest daughter went for the big chocolate brownie sundae with frozen yogurt, hot fudge, a cherry, sprinkles, and whipped cream. But, the full cup seemed a bit too much and she asked her father to scoop off the whipped cream onto his own treat.
Malia, the oldest daughter, ordered a waffle cone and vanilla custard.
The president paid with cash and then sat down with his daughters to enjoy the treat. Through the big plate glass window he could be seen visiting with other customers, holding a few babies, and posing for pictures with them.
The crowd that had gathered outside the shop, during the 15-minute visit, cheered as the first family exited the frozen custard shop.
The president was seen carrying a white bag to his car, which Liz Davis tells us contained frozen puppy pops for Bo, the first dog. Bo can expect to dine on pumpkin, and peanut butter and yogurt frozen treats tonight.
Frozen custard is a regional treat in Illinois and other mid-west states, thus the owner speculated that made her shop a nostalgic visit for the former Illinois senator.

Gee, people are dying in Iran and the best he can do is talk about what he said in Cairo? Oh, and there is a fine ice cream store at 2000 Pennsylvania Avenue. Just a mere 4 blocks away but he had to go all the way to Alexandria?

An iranian father is cradling the bloody dead body of his daughter on the bloody streets of Tehran and our wonderful FIRST FATHER is giggling with his daughters over ice cream!!! The irony is even more compelling given that THE ONE can hardly share his voice with the crying voices of the youth in Iran.
I AM DISGUSTED AND EMBARRASSED BY THIS CLOWN IN THE WHITEHOUSE.

Well, thank goodness are President isn’t just sitting around worried about an ongoing revolution in Iran, and all those young people being murdered by government thugs, I’m sure he needs to relax. I’m sure that he’s just waiting for whoever the winner is to emerge so he can start those negotiations.

papeehara, mbs:
It’s lucky for us that the President and the administration blocks out the truly pathetic politically-motivated criticism of certain mindless right-wingers and instead rightfully places the best and most effective interests of both those protesters clamoring for justice and the United States’ strategic security above all consideration.
The Iranians have said, Ahmedinejad is like Bush and Mousavi is like Obama. It is clear that the Iranians see the President as a symbol of hope and reject the interference and self-interested proclamations of “support” of many Republicans in Congress and their lemmings, who are so blind to complexities and loyalties and the different cultural understandings of the world beyond their own world view.
Every day I count my blessings that McCain was not elected, and that the Republicans can no longer endanger the security interests of the United States by their ignorance of world cultures and damaging bravado.

What a wretched thing to get angry about.
The world would be a better place if more fathers made time for their children.

Better enjoy ice cream while you can. When Obama is done burying us in debt, tearing up contracts, and apologizing for America, he will outlaw cows due to their excessive methane. Of course, he and Al Gore will still get to have their ice cream.

I thought we were supposed to eat organic vegetables from our home gardens. Holy cow. If Bush went out for ice cream he’d be screamed at, criticized for taking time off, etc. Don’t forget he had two adorable girls and the only attention they got was when they had an underage beer in college. The media is disgusting.

People are dying everywhere, Darfur, Myanmar, North Korea, Mexico, and in the US as well. So the President takes 30 minutes to take his girls out for icecream. Well, yes, he has to have the motorcade and security (remember all those crazies who´ve been threatening him), but 30 minutes for a treat for his daughters who are probably also going stir crazy in the White House? Some of you sound like you begrudge him the hours for sleeping. Get a life, folks.

What is it about Obama that has the right so unhinged?
In 2008, y’all were singing “Bomb, Bomb, Iran!”
In 2009, you are worried that Obama doesn’t show enough care for the poor Muslim people in Iran.
There is more to life than trying to cynically score points for your political team.
Posted by: blip | June 20, 2009, 9:52 pm 9:52 pm
First of all blip, much of Iran is not Muslim (except by force). Secondly we have been waiting for the people in Iran to rise up since 1979. The Iranian government is the threat, not the people.
Perhaps a little more homework is in order.

t,
One does not have to be a “mindless right-winger” to note the excesses of this particular First Family. We are exposed to their marketed performances, their extravagant comings and goings, and their profuse, imprudent expenditures almost daily.
Rather than appear humbly as the public servant he actually is, the president and his family parade themselves before us regularly like privileged members of a ruling class – on our dime.
My criticism of W.’s junkets to Crawford extended over 7 years , but he, at least, on almost every trip, went home, putting distance between himself and the press. On the other hand, the Obama’s jaunts are out on the town: Chicago, New York, Paris complete with choreographed appearances, detailed, deferential news analysis, and every step photographed.
The Obamas have chosen to lay themselves open as a marketing brand, dependent on a fawning media to cast them in perfect light. Some of us see those images differently.
12 limousines with 2 children in tow for 3 ice cream cones was an indulgent photo op for the Obama brand.

Bush sat on his hands for 8 years, is responsible for 90% of the deficit and pushed the middle east into such disarray that the whole world hates us. John, you make it too easy. Let me respond to your clever post piece by piece. (The bits in quotation marks are John’s words.)
“Ha — what a bunch of awful unsubstantiated whining. Is fox news having their blogging force posting in here.” Ah, a less well expressed example of the usual “hey, you Republicans always parrot talking points from (name your poison– Rush, Drudge, Fox News) As a matter of fact, I have spent a large part of my day watching Fox News and CNN alternately to keep up with the situation in Iran, and noted that MSNBC showed canned material rather than report on the turmoil in Iran.
” Bush sat on his hands for 8 years, is responsible for 90% of the deficit and pushed the middle east into such disarray that the whole world hates us.” Breathtaking in its egregious errors and ad hominem nonsense. Sat on his hands? Funny, you are usually fussing about the things he did do, like declare wars on Afghanistan and Iraq, prevent any further terrorist attacks, etc. etc.
Bush increased the deficit 2.5 trillion over 8 years. Obama will increase it by more than that in less than 4. And the crack about “pushing the Middle East into disarray” is so ludicrous I don’t knwow where to begin. As if the Middle East has not been in disarray for hundreds of years. As if Saddam, al Quaeda, Iran, Syria, etc. nothing to do with the problems in the middle east. Wow.
“Obama is clearly smarter, more sensible, and a harder working president.” Not really “clearly,” in my opinion. And certainly not ‘harder working’– yes, he works hard, but not excessively so. He got back from Europe and spent a day golfing. He weekends at Camp David regularly. He has plenty of leisure time– which is not a bad thing. But don’t get high and mighty acting as if he is chained to his desk 7 days a week and Bush was not.
“He went to get ice cream with his daughters.. on fathers day.” Crack. Me. Up. Today is not Father’s Day, you know. Tomorrow is Father’s Day. But maybe the president has a golf game planned for tomorrow or something. He went to get ice cream while the protests in Iran where turning bloody. Bad timing. I try to avoid this line of reasoning, but this is a situation where it is clearly called for— if Bush had done this, we would never have heard the end of it from the press and the democrats. So did the president take the girls home and read “my pet goat” to them?
“The 12 vehicles wasn’t his choice.” I won’t argue with you on this one.
Posted by: moderate | June 20, 2009, 11:41 pm 11:41 pm
No wonder the main stream press has no respect. what total nonsense. He’s got one of the most challenging jobs in the world. I would hope he’d live a normal life and do things with his family. What would you have him do? Retire to a ranch in Texas for over most of his presidency? Brood in his office around the clock?
And btw, I sure hope you don’t take any time off, eat ice cream, have a beer. There are crises to write about!
And might I add that the level of comment on this blog is barely that of ignorant teenagers.

Politicoli . . ..
“Bush increased the deficit 2.5 trillion over 8 years.”
You should get your facts straight if you’re going to pretend you know what you’re talking about.
The Government of the United States Treasury website lists the debt as follows:
09/30/2000 5,674,178,209,886.86
09/30/2008 10,024,724,896,912.49
That is an increase of approximately $4.5 trillion.
Oh well, you were only off by $2 TRILLION dollars – small change for a Republican overspender pretending to be fiscally responsible.

Where is the actual leadership? I certainly don’t see it.

If he wanted “a sense of normalcy” for his daughters, then he shoulda waited until they had grown up in a “normal” environment before he ran for this office.
This is Axelrod/Emanuel/Gibbs schtick, crafted to get, yet another, Seinfeld-like news story about “nothing”. I guess “the fly story” wore off, so time to put out another nothingburger for the media to distract over. Meanwhile, they stick the taxpayers with the bill for all these 12 big black vehicles, their 5 mph fuel economy, the personnel, who knows how many monitoring aircraft, satellites, etc. But hey, Zippy just takes the Marie Antoinette attitude about that: “Let them eat cake…”

Did ABC ever give a dam about Bush and how he spent Father’s Day with his daughters! Let me answer that for all you Obama lovers – NO!
Posted by: ml | June 21, 2009, 8:04 am 8:04 am
There is a BIG difference between the Bush twins and Obama’s very young girls. For one thing, by the time Bush got to the White House, his daughters were living independently and could choose to come see their dad on Father’s Day or stay wherever they were at that time. Given some of their other activities I expect Bush preferred they stay out of the spotlight, Father’s Day or not.
I’m not an admirer of Obama but I hope for their sake Sasha and Malia have a good Father’s Day with their dad. His time with them as children is limited and I’m sure like every other parent finds out, he’ll discover they’ll be grown up and gone all too soon.

ml you are right. Obama dines in Paris and New York while people the US are suffering. The girls spent the entire day with the Harry Potter kids meanwhile I worked at a shelter passing out meals. The Obamas ARE the status quo. Obama gave little to charity look at their tax returns.Fakes and Poseurs. That is what they are. He is a one term president so he can live it up while he can and Michelle can continue to wear her $520 tennis shoes.

Regarding “President Obama on Iran : The Government’s Violence and Unjust Behavior Against Its Own People Must Stop”, it’s amazing that if you go to Fox News.com, you will get the “complete” story on this. What ABC News conveniently neglected to mention, is that Obama was pressured into making this statement by leading Republicans, to take a firm stance on freedom in Iran and stop sitting on the fence. A complete story from Fox News and an edited incomplete story from ABC News. Could this be the reason why Fox News leads the polls in every single Prime-time category? Quite likely it is.It doesn’t take a Harvard graduate to figure that one out!

This story disgusts me. First off, find something better to report about. And second, Obama has no excuse for going to get ice cream while other children in Iran are getting shot in the middle of the street. He has a responsibility just as much as the rest of America does to stand up for freedom wherever it tries to ring out. Obama asked for American fathers to be better. Well I ask Obama to be a father to the world and be responsible. He should have come out on TV, not a paper press release yesterday. His words and actions do not match what is happening in Iran. It is time for Obama and ALL Americans to stand up for freedom and civil liberties around the world. It is OUR responsibility.

The Liberal Press is relentlessly attempting to do a John F. Kennedy “Camelot” number on Obama.
The only problem with their vain attempt, is that Obama is miles and miles away from being the legend who risked his life sand saved his crew on PT109 and who stood up to the Russians in Cuba and didn’t back down.
John F. Kennedy said “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.”
Obama says “Ask not what you can do for your country. Ask what your country can do for you.”
John F. Kennedy is an American Hero.

If you are a liberal, you are a narrow minded one which is NOT liberalism. Just like the many liberals that called anyone against Obama a racist.
Michelle Obama’s tennis shoes were from Lanvin and cost $525. Is that christian?

Look, even the Liberal New York Times mentioned it:
“Mr. Obama is coming under increased pressure from Republicans and other conservatives who say he should take a more visible stance in support of the protesters.”
Yes, that is from the New York Times.
Even they conceded it!!!
Now that Obama finally took a stance, this reporter failed to mention the reason why and is giving readers the impression that Obama heroically came forth on his own to take a stance.
Can any Liberals counter this with facts?
I guess not.

The skateboard run was a bit weird. One would of thought that the WH was a place to be respected by the public at least you would like it to be so.
Skateboarding through the halls then putting it on u tube, is just not something that is done, come on man even in third world countries do we see clips of people doing such in their leaders hallways?
We really have to try and maintain some kind of standard in the office of the President, who ever thought of that idea should be fired, its just something you don’t allow.

Well Lynn, you notice that in the entire United States, not one Liberal has come forth with any facts to respond to my question.
The moral of this story is that if you want to silence a Liberal, just task them with presenting you with facts!
Silence is golden sometimes!
As intelligent as the Liberals believe themselves to be; not one of them has come forth to respond to my question, as to why this reporter failed to mention that Obama was pressured by the top Republican leadership to take a firm stance on freedom in Iran, with any “facts”.
Well, that being the case, I am going to give them five additional minutes to put some facts on the table, regarding this biased reporting and then I am going to sign off and take my dog to the dog park!
It’s a beautiful morning in Southern California and I’ve wasted enough of it already and my dog is giving me “the look” right now!

Why not save the taxpayers the expense of a cavalcade of twelve vehicles, as well as the personnel necessary to man them, and have an ice cream party at home, and what a home it is! And don’t forget, there’s also Camp David. It may not garner the adoration and attention this president seems to crave, but it sure is a lot safer and less costly. Perhaps if the media assigned to cover the president and the White House, and that’s a big IF, ever decide to begin asking some tough questions with a critical eye rather than fawning over the swatting of slow-moving flies, date nights and ice cream and hamburg runs, we’ll see less of these additional taxpayer-funded forays.
Most importantly, whatever your political or ideological leanings, we need our president to remain safe. In this case, discretion is the better part of valor. Stay home and enjoy the perks, Mr. President!

liam: “Why not save the taxpayers the expense of a cavalcade of twelve vehicles, as well as the personnel necessary to man them, and have an ice cream party at home,”
He is President, not a king cloistered away in a castle. He SHOULD be going out among the people who elected him and empower him, not be shuttled back and forth in isolation from one exclusive retreat to another as the past President preferred.

Ken Tito:”Now that Obama finally took a stance, this reporter failed to mention the reason why and is giving readers the impression that Obama heroically came forth on his own to take a stance.
Can any Liberals counter this with facts?”
His stance and tactics have been clear and evolving with the situation from the onset, as Bush Sr dealt with the 1989 USSR coup and with an eye to Bush Jr’s failed support of the 2003 Iran unrest.
Your presented facts are not at all compelling. Republicans have been grandstanding for election year soundbites the instant they got the chance, but the official international spokesman for the United States does not have the luxury of careless incitement just for the sake of a good “tough on Iran” soundclip. His words matter (the exact same reasoning makes me mostly discount crediting his easy-to-make stand against the Iraq invasion back in 2001-2002).

To jhw539,
You missed my point.
My point is that the author of the Obama Iran article failed to include the “fact” that the reason that Obama made his statement, was that he was pressured by the Republican leadership to take a firm stance on freedom in Iran.
The author of the Obama Iran article on this ABC website eludes from that fact and attempts to disillusion readers, by giving them the impression that Obama heroically came forth and decided to make this statement on his own accord.
The fact of the matter is that he did not.
Look, even the Liberal New York Times mentioned it:
“Mr. Obama is coming under increased pressure from Republicans and other conservatives who say he should take a more visible stance in support of the protesters.”
Even the most Liberal news publication in America conceded this!
You gave a great attempt to twist my specific question; my question being why the author of the Obama Iran article failed to include the “fact”, that the reason that Obama made his statement, was that he was pressured by the Republican leadership to take a firm stance on freedom in Iran.
Nice try.
It didn’t work.
Keep on twisting the night away!

Obama did take a stance, he decided to wait and hold back and Kissinger agreed with him. He does not need anyone to tell him what to think, he does pretty good on his own. His style is not to jump into things to wait and analyze like he did when the captain of the ship was held hostage. He, behind the scenes, took charge and took no credit afterwards. He has had an affect on the youth of Iran. Look at the signs, “Yes We Can” and “Change” all from his speech in Cairo. He has influenced these young people more than anyone realizes. Just the fact that he is the first black president shows what persistence and effort can achieve. They like him and want to be friends with America thanks to him. I think the republicans need to stop underestimating him.

To talmag:
First off,why do you play the race card and mention that Obama is the first “Black” President?
Obama is a “person” and the fact of the matter is that he is 50% Caucasian, if you insist on playing the race card.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to analyze what is occurring in Iran.
It doesn’t take take days of pondering to figure it out.
Obama was sitting on the fence and wasn’t coming forth with a public statement, in support of freedom in Iran and condemning the oppression that is occurring there at this moment.
It doesn’t take a real smart sharp guy days to conclude this!
Come on now, give me a break!
It is apparent as the Sun rising in the morning!
The Republicans pressured Obama to make a public statement and he finally gave in.
This is fact.
Just Google “Obama pressured into taking a stance on Iraq” and you will see a multitude of articles appear on the subject.
Even the New York Times reported this and frankly, I’m surprised that this ultra Liberal Publication did report it!
I can only conclude that they reported it, because their newspaper sales have been floundering and they are realizing that they need to report the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth in order to survive as a newspaper.
Only ABC News omitted the fact that Obama was pressured into making a public statement, in support of freedom in Iraq.

The 23% of Americans who LOVE Bush and think he did an awesome job are the same 23% of Americans who absolutely HATE Obama.
They hate that he eats ice cream. They hate that he “thinks”. They hate that he uses a teleprompter. They hate his foreign policy.
But first and foremost, they hate the man. Even when he does similar things to Bush. They hate him because he doesn’t have an R next to his name.

Who pays for the motorcade? Did all the taxpayers chip in, without being asked or even told, or does that come of out The Won’s paycheck, since it’s his own frivolity and not business of state?
Likewise, the $26,000 date in NYC. He has some nerve, this President, to make us pay for his fun family excursions while he screams bloody murder over the Evil Corporate Execs who use corporate jets to take their families to Aspen and the Greenbrier, etc. The hypocrisy is staggering. Wake me up when anyone notices.

“Obama pressured into taking a stance on Iran”
This part of the statement is obvious Ken. There has been a lot of pressure for him to take a more forceful stance, but if anything he has resisted the pressure. However I don’t see any hard evidence other than opinion that the actual stance that Obama decided to take or the timing of when he decided to take it was influenced by anyone else but his administration, regardless of the number of articles one can find regarding the subject on Google.

Of course Obama was going to have to issue a statement about events as important than this. Are you seriously trying to suggest that without the Republican pressure Obama would NEVER have issued a statement? If I demand that the sun comes up tomorrow and then it does, did I make it happen?

I dont like what Obama does not because he is a democrate ( i have voted democrate before) but because he does alot of double talk. He promises one thing and delivers another. He is very good at figuring out what people want to hear and says it yet he does something totally different. I am against total control of the government and all the free spending that is happening. I am against pork spending which is exactly what the stimulus package is. I am against increase taxes. As far as going out for Ice cream with his family that is not news that is pubicity stunt only. This is not news.

As usual, the haters here got nuthin’ so they’re, as usual, ranting on about “what did that cost the taxpayers?” about things EVERY president has done, and will continue to do. (Are y’all asking if it was the taxpayer that paid for Abraham and Mary Lincolns tickets to the Ford Theater the night he was shot?)
We do not ask our presidents (thank goodness) to abandon their families for the time they are in office. Why on earth would “liam” insist that Malia and Shasha never leave the White House or Camp David, other than to attend school, for at least the next four years of their young lives? I’m quite sure he wouldn’t expect his own children to be prisoners in their own home for four years. They don’t deserve to ever go out and get ice cream with their dad?
One of the things Obama promised us was greater transparency in the presidency, as well as greater access from “grass roots” … which means the common people. If he wants to know what the average person thinks, does he do it by shutting himself up in the White House and asking his advisers to tell him? Or does he do it by making a lunch run for people in his office, and taking his children out for frozen yogurt on a Saturday, and then talking to the people he meets while out and about?
Why on earth do you people think he was so reluctant to give up his Blackberry? He didn’t want to give up one of his few links to reality. He didn’t want to just sit there in the White House, only being told what a bunch of “yes men” wanted him to hear.
And I’m sorry you guys, but Michelle, Malia and Shasha have a right to have some sort of lives while their husband/father is president as well. Michelle married a financially successful man with a white-collar job, and she has a right to expect a few dinners out and plays/concerts, etc. while he’s in office. Malia and Shasha have a right to do the same kind of things with their Dad, every once in a while, that other daughters can do.
If you all stop to think about it, Michelle, Malia and Shasha are giving up A LOT in order for their husband/father to serve as the President of the United States. So why in the world you haters out there think you have any right to whine and complain every time the man does anything with his family is far beyond me.

President Obama has not given into republican pressue on Iran!
If the president had taken republican advice last week when this issue was about the election, it would have been the USA vs ahmadinejad. President Obama is a long range thinker! By knowing when to speak and how much to say, he has allowed the people of Iran to see their government leaders for what they are..dictators! This situation had to get ‘out of control’.
He has in ineffect castrated Ahmadinejad! And now the Ayatollah! The Iranian government has no creditablity. Review Obama’s actions and words from the 2nd pres debate, the inaguation speech, the Arabic interview, the Cario speech…all communicated to the people of mid east nations (young people).
By the way, he should take his children for ice cream…it’s not healthy to stay in the house 24/7…even if its the white house. He needs to have real conversations with real people in the real world. He needs to have date nights with his wife of 16 years…to avoid affairs and lude acts that other politician engage in!

jhw539, haven’t you ever seen someone eating chocolate chip mocha ice cream, or a slice of almond lime cheese cake, or a juicy prime rib subway sandwich, and decided that you just had to have one of those? Just because you may have tried something before doesn’t mean that someone’s actions down the road might not cause you to try it again! If that were the case there are hundreds of advertising agencies that would have gone out of business decades ago!

I see: the President is not permitted to take his young daughters out for ice cream on Father’s Day, because children are dying in the Middle East — as though NOT taking his daughters out would have some obvious effect on middle-eastern children.
This is rather like the old, 1950′s and early 60′s claim, “Eat your broccoli, because children are starving in India!” We children back then realized the spurious nature of this claim, so why don’t the liams and whoever still not get it? Are they simply naive and stupid? And did they ever ask themselves whether it was inappropriate for George W to hang out on his Texas ranch while American soldiers were dying in Iraq?
Of course they didn’t.

No story on Obama’s golf outing, Jake?
Surely it’s at least as important to cover that as it is to cover ice cream.
Posted by: Lynn | June 21, 2009, 7:55 pm 7:55 pm
Oh yes, because Obama should have just left the girls at the frozen yogurt store (the secret service could have seen them home) and immediately gone off to board Air Force One, in order to fly to Iran and take control (personally) of the situation there. No doubt that, within no more than two hours, he could have single-handedly quelled the riots, talked ImADinnerJacket into forfeiting the office, and held a new (personally supervised by him) election in which he, himself, personally counted all the votes (and personally stood guard at all polling places to make sure votes were free and not coerced), and then been home by dinner. All while getting the point across to the Muslim world that the US doesn’t intend to interfere with things that are none of our business so that the hatred against the US doesn’t continue to increase. Right?
Posted by: Jaylah | June 21, 2009, 7:55 pm 7:55 pm
I’ve been giving the frozen yogurt run some thought, examining my motives for thinking it inappropriately timed and honestly thinking about whether it was a knee-jerk response because I am admittedly not an Obama fan.
I am not terribly worked up over the incident, to be sure. However, it does bug me, for this reason– Obama set up the high expectations people have for him and should expect this sort of criticism. He is the one, along with his team of advisers, who built his political career and successful presidential campaign out of the use of symbols and images. His speech in Berlin– remember that far back? He wanted to have it at the Brandenburg Gate, but settled for another authoritative image in front of the Victory Column. Remember the careful staging of his convention acceptance speech? No auditorium would do, but we must move to the football stadium and build a set that projected presidential overtones, echoed Kennedy’s Los Angeles Coliseum speech, and connected Obama with the ancient Greeks. It was well-planned by a group very conscious of the symbolism of every appearance.
Since being elected, Obama has continued to be concerned about the images that are transmitted and is acutely aware that he is in the world’s most closely watched fishbowl, as is his family. Think of the images they worked into the Brian Williams gushing special, of which the president joked just the other night (joking about being in bed with Brian). THere was Obama the ‘regular guy,’ getting burgers with the anchor and making sure everyone got fed. There was the serious leader with his sleeves rolled up.
The president no doubt was aware of the minor kerfuffle last week when a picture of him with his feet on his desk while talking to the Israeli prime minister caused some in Israel to complain about the insult of showing the bottoms of his feet. Something that minor gets picked up and magnified because of the position he holds– the presidency of the USA.
So he should have given thought to how it looked for him to be running out for ice cream at that particular highly charged moment in the Iran meltdown. Do I think he should be able to take his kids out for ice cream, or to go on a date with his wife, regardless of his being president– oh, yes, you bet. I have no problems with him having a vacation in August on Martha’s Vineyard, either, any more than I begrudged Bush his Augusts at the ranch or Clinton his August vacations whereever the polling suggested he should go.
However, I do think the timing of this particular outing was inappropriate. The girls could have waited until today to have their father’s day ice cream moment. I keep being told that the president has to be careful not to give the Iranian leadership ammunition with his words, that his reticence on the election and protests is appropriate. And I have to a large degree agreed with this logic and said so numerous times on this site. However, he needs to be equally careful with the images he is providing. I do not think we will have pictures coming out of Angela Merkel, Gordon Brown, or Nicolas Sarkozy doing anything public and frivolous on Saturday, and I wish there were no pictures of the president doing so either.

Moderate, that was a well thought out post. Thank you.
I’m just a tiny bit curious, though, if you considered the fact that it wasn’t just Mr. Obama and his daughters participating in this. (Unlike a “normal” father-daughter impromptu outing to an ice cream parlor.) There were others’ schedules to take into consideration here, too.
I’m sure this trip was carefully planned at least some time ago, and to have scrapped the plan at the last moment *might* have created much confusion and inconvenience for others?
If you take that into consideration, does that then make any difference in your view?

In response to JHW539: “”He is president, not a king cloistered away….he should be going out among the people….not shuttled back and forth in isolation from one exclusive retreat to another as the past president preferred.”
What ill-informed commentary. Camp David serves as a retreat for the president and his family as well as an extension of the White House. President Bush owned a private property, a ranch, in the same way that President Obama owns a mansion in Chicago. They are homes, not “exclusive retreats.”
The person who is acting more like a “king,” as you describe it, and walking among the hoi-polloi, for whatever reason, as well as being shuttled back and forth to “exclusive retreats,” like Paris, New York and London, appears to be the present occupant of the White House, not his predecessor.

liam, your faux-arguments are hysterically funny.
Posted by: Jaylah | June 21, 2009, 9:45 pm 9:45 pm
Try the truth, I think you are making my point. The president is keenly aware of the spotlight on him– think of the jokes he made about that at the press dinner the other night, for example. Yes, he gets far more coverage than Merkel or Brown by the press. So he should have known that people would take note of his actions as well as his words on Saturday. Since even a trip to a burger joint with Joe Biden is reported breathlessly and dissected, he had to know a trip this weekend with his two charming daughters would be covered widely, whether he wanted it to be or not.
But I suspect that the press in Europe did ask the press offices of the other leaders what they were doing on Saturday and would have reported any public activities that could be contrasted with the turmoil in Iran, as the president’s ice cream run was. Sarkozy, for example, was at the Paris Air Show, which was important to show support for that industry in the wake of the Air France tragedy of last month.
Posted by: moderate | June 21, 2009, 10:28 pm 10:28 pm
Try the truth, I do NOT begrudge the president time spent with his daughters. Please see my previous comments in this thread and elsewhere. What I have been arguing, which I realize may not be clear to you because it differs from what several other commentors are arguing, is that the president should have been more concerned about the SYMBOLISM and the VISUAL of his visit to Dairy Godmother on that particular day. No, there was nothing he could do to help the suffering Iranian protesters at that moment, and I have NEVER argued that he could have, or that he should be chained to his desk 24/7. I even commented further down the page that I was fine with him golfing today with Biden.
I am trying very hard to be thoughtful and clear in my comments, and as I mentioned, I seriously gave deep consideration to my position on this presidential ice cream run before posting my opinion. I would appreciate the same thoughtfulness in your response to my thoughts, not a dismissive accusation that I should be ashamed of begrudging the president and his daughters their ice cream.
Gee, such a serious tone on my part does sound a bit silly given the subject matter, doesn’t it? But I started it, so I need to follow through in responding to your criticism.

Posted by: moderate | June 21, 2009, 10:41 pm 10:41 pm
James Danley, I am enjoying your comments.
And jhw, when you mocked him for suggesting that one reason the Iranians are revolting is because they see the example of democracy in IRaq and Afghanistan, responding that they revolted in 1999 and 2003 as well, prior to democratic reforms in those neighbors. To me, this shows that there was a long-standing dissatisfaction and longing for reform among the Iranian population, which is another force driving the current demonstrations.
Consider, however, that the ’99 and ’03 demonstrations were largely student-led and did not involve a broad spectrum of the population. There are early indications that this protest movement is more broadly based– more older people, more women, not just urban-based young students. We shall see if this proves to be the case as it unfolds. But if it does, I think Danley has a point. Perhaps a broader spectrum of Iranians is more confident that they can achieve the reforms they desire because of the example of their neighbors. I will say that a few of the Iranians I know here (admittedly, college students so part of that generation and social group more prone to speak out)have spoken admiringly of the democratic elections in Iraq, even as they express skepticism about the manipulation of the Iraqi population by interest groups. In other words, they are not naive, but they are aware of democratic developments in other countries in their region and they are impatient for similar developments in Iran.

Moderate, the reason I said this was NOT a “normal” impromptu father-daughter thing (I think you misread my earlier post regarding that) is because the article states that it was a motorcade consisting of “[t]welve dark vehicles” who “wound thru small side streets to the Del Ray section of Alexandria, Virginia, a suburb of Washington.”
First, let me say that I’m really not at all sure why it took a 12-vehicle motorcade to get three people ice-cream. I used to work at SHAPE in Belgium, back when Alexander Haig was SACEUR, and we used to take great glee in attempting (and occasionally succeeding) to get our own cars in between his vehicle and his chase car on the way to work, just because his security detail would get so shook up about it. I also understand that the security detail that travels with the POTUS probably requires more than two men in a chase car. But twelve vehicles plus attendant personnel?
However, if we assume that each of the twelve vehicles in the motorcade had only one person in them (the driver), then that means that canceling at the last minute would have meant schedule interruption and inconvenience for at least 12 people. And I suspect it’s highly unlikely that each vehicle carried only one person. If we assume 2 per vehicle, that means at least 24 people.
While I have no doubt that the owner of the Dairy Godmother was only given a few minutes notice, I think we can safely say that this trip was planned (by the security detail at least) well in advance. It would seem that it would have to have been in order to organize a twelve-vehicle motorcade with attendant personnel. Would you agree?

Try the truth, I appreciate your response and we’ll just agree to disagree. I realize it is hard to judge tone in this anonymous written format, so I appreciate you making it clear you did not mean to sound harsh. I didn’t either.
I found it amusing to get another perspective here in my own house. One of my sons is home for the summer, and he spent the evening curled up on the couch with his dad watching movies that he found unspeakably boring but that his dad loves. Just now, he was reading this thread over my shoulder. He says we are all missing the point– the president went out for ice cream on SATURDAY, but skipped out on the family on Sunday, actual Father’s Day, to go golfing with the VP. He thought the girls got short-changed anyway. Crack me up.

Jaylah, fascinating response! Thanks!
I love hearing about your days at SHAPE. I have a friend who tells hilarious stories about her college years in Europe, when she used to go bar hopping with Vaclav Havel. I’m afraid I haven’t had such glamorous European adventures as you guys.
I too am puzzled by the need for 12 vehicles. Heightened security because of some threat? And I agree a lot of folks were involved and would have had their plans changed if the president rearranged the schedule (putting off the ice cream caper until Sunday). I guess my feeling is that it is in the nature of the security people’s job to have to rearrange and to be inconvenienced by the whim of whatever VIP one is covering. But you are right– it was not an outing that affected only the First Family. Good point, well argued.

Actually, in my family Father’s Day and Mother’s Days have always been like that. On the Saturday before Father’s Day, my Dad would spend some time doing something fun with us kids. (At least something we thought was fun…taking us swimming, or whatever. Probably not all that thrilling for him.) On the actual Sunday of Father’s Day, we would give him breakfast in bed (our best attempts but I’m now wondering if many of them weren’t quite gag-worthy), and the day was about “him.”
On Saturday before Mother’s Day, we would all get to go to the Woolworth’s lunch counter (or some other kid-friendly place) for lunch with our mother. On the actual day of Mother’s Day, she would be treated to our (same gag-worthy) breakfasts in bed. (Of course, once we’d removed her tray, she’d gotten up and gotten dressed, and seen what we thought was a “good job” of cleaning up the kitchen after ourselves, she no doubt would have been quite willing to forgo any further breakfasts.)
As to President Obama and his girls, perhaps he was trying to allow them to see what riding in a full presidential motorcade was like. I don’t think they get to experience that much, since they aren’t usually with him for such “grand” occasions. And, who knows? We aren’t provided with an accounting of the outing, so it’s possible that President Obama re-paid the cost of the trip to the presidential expense coffers.
I just agree with others that have said it was good to see our president being a “good dad” and spending some time with his children, doing something they would enjoy.
And I don’t think that him doing so on this particular day (due to the activities in Iran) really should have made any difference. As has been reported elsewhere, his advisers were in constant contact with him, and — besides — the whole trip only took less than an hour.
If we never see photographs of Brown or Sarkozy out having fun with their children, perhaps we should wonder about them, not Obama. I think there’s a case to be made that the President of the United States has serious, pressing, concerns on his day EVERY day. I fail to understand how something happening in Iraq, that he has no control over, should have made him disappoint his daughters by canceling an outing for ice-cream.

Ooops, typo in my last post. Yes, I do know the difference between Iraq and Iran.

Okay, gang, before I turn in for the night, I’ll make one last stab at explaining my commentary in small words that folks eager to label me passive-aggressive can understand. I will tell my son about the BBQ– he’ll be pleased to hear it. He showed me something about Bobby Flay being at the WH earlier this week, so maybe the two things are connected? Very nice.
Now, let’s try again– I did NOT criticize the president for golfing. My son did. Honestly– and actually, he didn’t complain about the golfing but about it being on Father’s Day and the girls going out with their dad on Saturday, which is not Father’s Day. I’m sure he’ll be pleased about the girls getting lots of time with their dad at the barbecue.
I specifically pointed out in an earlier post that I had no problem with the prez golfing, not even given my comments about the symbolism problem with the ice cream run. I mentioned that since Saturday was the start of the crack down and the day the world was focused on Iran, the public view of the president that day was more important stylistically than the visuals on Sunday, when there was a sort of pause to regroup in Iran. So of course, since I NEVER criticized the president for golfing on Father’s Day, I am not going to criticize Biden for golfing with him. I’ll check with my son, the one who made the crack about golfing, to see what he thinks of the VP’s schedule for the day. *G*
You suggest that I am only critical of the president and that nothing he does will please me. Then how do you explain my defenses, on this site, of his handling of the Iran situation? I have posted on more than one occasion that I think his measured but firm written statements were appropriate and helpful. I have said that he is right to be cautious about giving the Iranians any ammunition to use in their “blame america” campaign.
In other posts this weekend, I specifically remember giving the president credit for his handling of the Somali pirate situation as well as the Iran crisis. I have frequently praised his choice of Hillary (my democratic fave candidate this last election cycle– even contributed money to her campaign) for Sec. of State and some of his other foreign policy team. I have spoken warmly about his emphasis on family and his clear affection for his daughters. My conscience is clear– when I agree with the man, I say so, and when I disagree, I say so too. Sorry you have a problem with that.
‘Night, all, and happy Father’s Day.

Oops, couldn’t resist visiting Politico before I put the puter to bed for the night, so I could check the pres’s itinerary for the day and see how I missed the news about the barbecue. Surprise, surprise, there was no barbecue today. The only thing on the prez’s public schedule was the golf game.
I think Try the Truth is referring to the Laua that the president is hosting for Congress and their families on THURSDAY. It sounds like a terrific event– it’s usually a picnic and he’s giving it a Hawaiian twist. Very nice– I have no problem with that, but applaud it.
Or maybe you mean the Father’s Day forum held at the White House on FRIDAY, where Tony Hawk skateboarded through the WH and Bobby Flay barbecued. Another great event, but not held on Father’s Day.

All we have to do is exchange “Obama” with “Bush” and there’d be a much different attitude on this board.
The Prez took advantage of photo ops. He didn’t care how engaging in trite publicity stunts would look to millions of Americans and others around the world given the gravity of the situation in Iran.
He could have done any number of things with his daughters without the Press around and on the grounds of the White House.
He’s using his daughters the way he uses his dog-just ways to get publicity and give the MSM more of those ‘Aw shucks, he’s such a regular guy’ stories.

Just read a fascinating piece on Politico about the stagecraft of the Obama White House. The piece focused on how much attention to detail went into every public view of the president, down to which podium to use, how the helicopter lands on the lawn, etc. etc. So my point that the president should have had a better sense of the symbolism of his Dairy Godmother visit seems to be well supported– this WH is obsessed with image, so why the slip up?

I don’t know if Obama’s outing with his girls was “staged” or not, but even if it was that doesn’t mean sinister motives were at play. Maybe he used the day/venue to make a statement about quality time with children as a father. Maybe he was making a statement about the importance of fatherhood. After all, he is the President.

Yikes! My gripe is grammatical. There are two daughters, which means using the comparative, not superlative: Sasha, his YOUNGER daughter…Malia, the OLDER daughter…
