GOP Activist Likens Gorilla to Michelle Obama
ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: A South Carolina Republican activist has learned the perils of social-media sites, with a Facebook posting where he joked that an escaped gorilla was probably related to First Lady Michelle Obama. The activist, a former state senate candidate named Rusty DePass, responded to news of a gorilla breakout at a local zoo by posting to Facebook on Friday: “I’m sure it’s just one of Michelle’s ancestors — probably harmless.” (The entry was deleted — along with DePass’ Facebook page — over the weekend. But the South Carolina political blog FITSNews.com captured a screen-grab.) DePass apologized: “I am as sorry as I can be if I offended anyone. The comment was clearly in jest,” he told a local television station, according to the New York Daily News. But he added: “The comment was hers, not mine,” claiming that the first lady had recently made a remark about humans descending from apes. (It’s not clear what he was referring to.) DePass is a former chairman of the Richland County (S.C.) Republican Party. He was an early supporter of George W. Bush’s campaign in 2000, and of Rudolph Giuliani’s in 2008.

The ignorance of republicans never ceases to amaze me.
We are lucky to have Michelle Obama as our first lady – she is smart and classy – two things that could never be said about DePass.

Racism is as rampant in the republican party as fat white men with martinis. And this is why the republican party will not win the Whitehouse for a very long, long, long, long, long, long time.

It’s a joke. Michelle made the statment not long ago about being decendent from apes so what’s the big deal. Anyone sitting for 20 years in Rev Wright’s church has to be racist if you continue to support his church. But I guess she is not speaking to the Rev anymore he said “them Jews want let Obama talk to him”
Posted by: frances | June 15, 2009, 12:04 pm 12:04 pm
Everyone is so quick to label this man a “racist”. IF this remark was based solely on her ethnicity, then yes, this is a disgusting display of hatred. HOWEVER, what if Michelle actually made a remark relating the human ancestor to the gorilla and this man’s comment was to truly question her belief in evolution? Then it becomes an attack on her religious beliefs, but by then we would have tagged him a racist and destroyed his family’s livelihood.
I am not saying he was wrong or right with his comment. All I am saying is that people are so quick to turn angry due to their own insecurities before fully understanding the entire situation. This happens too many times in today’s society.

Wow, a Southern Republican who believes in EVOLUTION!?! What is happening to the GOP these days! His comment is not racist as most everyone, excepting certain Republicans, believe humans descended from apes. So what is wrong with saying that Michelle had ape relatives? Or is the left now against evolution also?

MikeC: first of all, Letterman was WAY out of line and should apologize. Now to the GOP. I watched a documentary on HBO a couple months ago that followed the McCain campaign all across the country. Tons of footage and interviews with everyday people at picnics, high school gym rallies, town hall meetings, NASCAR events, parades etc. It struck me about three-quarters of the way through: not one black face in any of the crowds. Not one brown face. Not one Asian face. Only white people. Thousands of them at McCain events. If the GOP does not find a way to reach out, be inclusive, they are dead.

What about all the insults and degredations that the Palin family has had to endure. Isn’t it funny that liberals have always thought that it’s totally against everything to interject any kind of difference of ideology, they’re blind to anyones elses opinion and will denegrate them and make them look foolish for having a belief, but it’s just fine to insult a bright energetic conservative female whose views on abortion are different. She obviously loves her children and I think it’s just a shame the way the press has treated her.
Obama think it’s just fine to let the guys go who cut off Americans heads and give them miranda rights on the battlefield but when it comes to abortion especially late term abortion it’s the hell with the baby view, he even introduced a bill that would let a live baby from an abortion die because it might cause trauma to the mother, and he does all of this so callously….
I don’t believe there is a more arrogant love himself person on the planet.
By the way David Letterman is not a comedian he is now a political activist and I hope his show fails after what he said about Govenor Palin and her daughter whether he meant the older daughter or not is irrelevant, and Obama should have put a stop to this during the election, how would he feel if this was his wife and children.

Sorry, but this guy is an idiot. Doesn’t he know that Facebook is an open book? This makes me doubt his intelligence. But the worse is the insult and the half-baked apology about “being sorry if anyone was offended. So he’s sorry that they are offended, and not for insulting them. This has become the common response for a lot of insulting. As it is, the GOP in South Carolina hit another low mark.

At some point in America, we need to stop this stupid name-calling and making fun of people who we don’t agree with. Everyone from the politicians, comedians, news commentators and even parents – need to take a step back and stop supporting these haters – for the sake of our kids and the future of the nation. Whether it’s Keith Olberman, Dave Letterman, Rusty Depass or others like them. Send them a clear message that this type of behavior is NOT OK – on either side of the political spectrum.

You ought to be ashamed of yourself. Your comments about Michelle Obama were reprehensible and offensive on SO MANY LEVELS! It one thing not to accept this new administration and the good they are doing for so many people of all races and backgrounds, but it’s another thing to insult a woman who is a ROLE MODEL for millions of people in this country including MYSELF! And your “apology” was not sincere in the least bit and people have already acknowledged that (including the media). Closet racism is still alive and well.
Fortunately, there are people who are in your same AGE category, race and socio-economic status that have EMBRACED this administration and those are the people I admire. CHALLENGE yourself to be a better person!!!!!

William, regarding the documentary on HBO…..check the credits. This was produced, written, and directed by Nancy Pelosi’s activist daughter. She purposely went and interviewed the worst of republicans….as well as only showing footage at certain locations. It’s the equivalent of someone from the GOP interviewing gang members as democrats. Regardless of your political affiliation, at least try to see the other side from an objective point of view.

For those of you who think what DePass said is not racist need to look at the long history of words used to dehuminze people of African decent. Some of the term were to call people monkeys or apes as a way to make them sound and feel less than human. And you cannot compare Letterman’s joke that Palin’s daughter got knocked up by ARod (he did not say raped, that was thrown out there by Palin’s husband) to what DePass said. Letterman told a bad joke, DePass is perpetuating, whehter intentionally or not, racism. Even if Michelle had said she believes in evolution, the comment was way out of line.

Lets be rational, not point fingers. I don’t care who it is, if someone is wrong they are wrong. Lets not make excuses. Lets be adults, and not act like we can’t understand why this would be offense. Seriously. If Letterman, Rev. Wright or whoever said something wrong, they are also wrong. It DOES NOT give us the right to brush off something said that is clearly unnecessary and ugly. PERIOD.
P.S.
Educate yourself if you are going to sit here and say that we are being too sensitive. My gradmother was called names like this when she was growing up, so YES IT IS OFFENSE AND YES IT SHOULD BE SEEN AS SUCH.

This “joke” was in greater poor taste than Letterman’s ever could be.
1. Its about the elected President’s wife
2. The subject matter being about apes and the President’s wife being african-american. The underpinnings of racism are based on these sort of denigrating thoughts.
3. Regardless of whether or not she’d said anything about evolution, would he have said this if she was white?
He owes her and the American public a televised and forthright apology.
Letterman’s a winding down comedian, who can easily be avoided by changing a channel.

The Democratic party needs to split into two parties – so we can continue with a two party system. The Republicans are lost. It is going to take conservatives at least a generation to rid themselves of the racists, hate mongers, and self-indulgent rich people they partied with for so long. I hate the oft-used line: “I’m so sorry you found out how I really feel.”

I’m not a Republican, but I wonder how many know that the Republican party was founded by anti-slavery activists? In 1922, Senate Democrats filibustered a Republican attempt to make lynching a federal crime. Dwight Eisenhower (a Republican president) sent troops to Little Rock to ensure schools were desegregated and ordered the complete desegregation of the Armed Forces. How about Democrat Robert Byrd (a former KKK member by the way)using the ‘N’ word on national TV in 2001? How about Jesse Jackson calling New York City “Hymietown”. Give me a break with the Republican racist thing. Racism knows no bounds and exists in the Democrat party as well.

That being said, I do think the gorilla comment was offensive and in poor taste. I was just responding to the person who was labeling the whole Republican party as racist. Hey, I’ve seen plenty of Republicans call Sarah Palin “slutty” and frankly admit that’s why they have the hots for her. But the point of Letterman’s joke was the hypocrisy of the Palin family. Posted by: Machod | June 16, 2009, 1:28 am 1:28 am
Yeas, we realize it is just a tasteless joke and I see some have likened it to David Letterman… The difference here is that Letterman is a comedian and as he said, has a career of tasteless jokes about politicians and we saw the Palin supporters whining about that incident.
Republican DePass is a typical example of how we see the GOP, filled with old white men that represent a white portion of the population that is very threatened by the idea of a Black President…because he is going to commit socialist acts of kindness for the poor??? For Godsakes, let’s not help the poor.
And none from the left bow down and apologize to a radio talking head as the GOP seems to constantly do.

This is just rude. I am as offended by this as I was Letterman’s crude so-called joke.

I am a white guy (not fat) who likes martini’s- but have been a progressive and liberal since I first voted in 1972.
DePass is obviously a bigot- how sad- that many in the GOP still practice ‘Plantation’ style politics shows why nothing has really been accomplished economically for the poor and middle class for 40 years.

Exactly!

Hey dems, it’s OK to call Sarah Palin “slutty” and you guys defend it as satire? Guess what, the jokes on you now! Take the joke for what it is or you’re nothing but a hypocrite! Enjoy eating crow dems; attack this dumb remark at your own peril.

First of all, if this was a democrat saying a racial remark, if would not even make it to the press! Everyone who is in the media is an ignorant liberl! As for the person above who mentioned Republicans not being true Americans by not supporting the first lady, what happended when Laura Bush was in the White House, where was the support from the democrats?? Hmm, now who are the hypocrites!!!

It doesn’t matter who says what, this entire country is embroiled in racism, sexism, homophobia, moralistic finger-pointing, and general belligerance. What a pathetic example adults show to children. Everybody, grow up !

Republicans are a real class act. They compare their leaders to comedians and hold them to the same standard.

This comment seems to be a reaction to her earlier statement about humans having evolved from apes. To me it looks like a joke about her belief in evolution –he never said she looked like an ape. Grow up people.

Former candidate means he lost. Former County chairman of the Republican Party means he no longer is. If he was a BIG Republican he would still be in power. So I guess if he is a Republican you can link him to Bush and Giuliani. And somehow he becomes a BIG Republican. His statements were wrong but they were his statements. He does not speak for the whole party as this story seems to imply.

Isn’t it amazing, all the elected officials are the “elements” they were elected to protect us and the U.S. from. In the history of voting in America, this is the first (maybe second) time we have ever had a President that was elected by THE PEOPLE. THE PEOPLE spoke, and we heard each other. We don’t need parties, especially Republicans. Nothing they have every done trickled down to benefit me. And for the first time, I have a representative w/an impecable background, deserving (and not just suedo-) representing me. Life is good and the world knows it and loads of republicans are unhappy. Feels good to have someone else unhappy for a change instead of me.

l can’t believe how some folks can be so stupid to call other human beings as animals. i think it’s a big shame for such a person of his character to called that woman as an ape, shame unto you. by the way if he attends church he should ask his pastor about what he said and if not he should think about it and answer himself. what a strange world this so called guy lives in.

I can tell you what he was referring to. It’s evolution. If she thinks we’re descended from apes, then why is she so upset? I mean, we’re all just evolved apes. The Republican was offended by her evolution position, so he made her sleep in the bed she made. She clearly wants it both ways.

So when are we seeing that Republican apology?

As you will see, Michelle will ignore it as she is secure within herself. Unlike Palin who thrives on publicity. The comment by Letterman was wrong, wrong and ignorant. But her using it instead of stating her objection and moving on is typical of her. She thrives on publicity good or bad. She be wise to go on and do her job in Alaska which some people there feel she is ignoring for her own purposes.

Michelle will ignore his remark as she is smarter and better than him and secure within herself. As for the Palin remark. Letterman was wrong, wrong, and insensitive. However, Palin should have made her comments and moved on. However, she revels in publicity, any kind. To continue with this is a mistake for her. She needs to try to make people believe she ready to handle things and going on and on about this is not good for her.

That was no joke. I’m 74 years old and clearly remember the racial insults of the 50′s and 60′s. One of the more common was, “Your momma’s an ape” He knew and he remembered.
Bad enough to be stupid enough to post it and think it would go unnoticed, worse to tell stupid lies to cover your butt. At least Faubus and Maddox admitted what they were.

Disgusting…this is the first lady….there is no reason for such not only racist but childish and ignorant statements.

How many times did you fools call Bush a monkey? LMAO The woman is walking around in 600 dollar shoes, and telling the rest of us we need to sacrifice. These people are getting ready to destroy health care, without a private option. It will cost trillions in taxes and cap and trade will be another massive tax laid on top of it. So when you’re pumping six dollars a gallon gas, and your utility bill has more than doubled. When they add more taxes, and top it off with a VAT tax, you only have one person responsible, your president. You can’t blame Bush for Obama’s quadrupling of the debt. You all better do your homework on this man you chose to follow. He’s leading you and this country down the road of destruction.

@William J who says “…not one black face in any of the crowds. Not one brown face. Not one Asian face. Only white people. Thousands of them at McCain events.”
Think with me now … with the black population at about 15% and the first black man running for POTUS, why do you think you didn’t see any black faces at McCain’s events? Do you think maybe if a black person had an interest in the election and/or an opportunity to go to a political event – do you think they’d go to a McCain/Palin rally or an Obama/Biden rally? Think hard.
McCain (or any white candidate) never had a chance for the black vote.

Ok, when David Letterman makes a scripted rehearsed comment about 14 and 18 year old girls on television in front of MILLIONS of viewers – its a “joke” and we should lighten up, but when this comment about a full grown woman on facebook (viewed by hundreds) then it’s an outrage…
give me a break…
Posted by: nancy | June 16, 2009, 5:43 pm 5:43 pm
I will believe the liberals comments when their outrage is not only color blind but party blind. Liberal stood silent when Palin was disparaged. They stood silent when Playboy ran the article about top 10 republican women to hate ####. The stood silent when liberals who disagreed with Michelle Malkins views made racist sexist remarks about her.
Was this guy racist? Maybe! Was he stupid? Definitely!!

Interesting, despite the historical, Inhumane treatment of Black folks, perpetuated by White folks. It is rare (and certainly not common)that you see or hear of Black folks disparaging (or being racially insensitive to White folks. (There’s a message in there, somewhere… if only insensitive people could find it.)
Posted by: bobj72 | June 16, 2009, 5:57 pm 5:57 pm
Michelle Obama is a grown woman and these comments were on facebook. Unlike David Letterman who scripted and rehearsed his lines about a 14 and 18 year old and said it to MILLIONS of viewers.
It makes me ill that people thought it was ok to talk about little girls this way, but the Dems are up in arms about Michelle Obama!

I don’t know if what she allegedly said is true or not, but if, by some twist, she did say that we came from apes, would that not be an insult to every religion out there? If she did say it, I would be offended. Besides, it’s always classified as racism when it’s a white person saying something against a black person. But if it’s the other way around, it’s okay, because apparently then it doesn’t count. I think it’s ridiculous.
