Nothing’s Off Limits at – Another? – Annual Reporters’ Dinner
From ABC News’ Sarah Tobianski
What better way to embrace a troubled industry than to laugh at its flaws? That’s what President Obama did Friday night at Friday’s Annual Radio & Television Correspondents’ Association dinner, which comes just five weeks after the separate yet not completely equal, celebrity-filled White House Correspondent’s Dinner.
“The jokes may not be as good,” President Obama said. “But neither is the guest list. Why bother hanging out with celebrities when I can spend time with the people who made me one?”
Mr. Obama continued, “As you know, we’ve been working around the clock on to repair our major financial institutions and our auto companies. But you probably wouldn’t understand the concept of troubled industries, working as you do in the radio and television industry.”
After some groans, Obama continued: “Ho ho. We don’t joke about that, huh? That’s not funny.”
Troubled automakers were also the theme to another joke where Obama talked about a “plan” devised by Oprah to help the auto industry. “If each of you will look under your seat, you will find that-ah-you get a car company. You get a car company. And Fox, you get AIG. Enjoy!”
In addition to cracking jokes about many prominent network and cable journalists, Obama made clear that his own administration wasn’t off limits, either.
“By now I’m sure you’ve all seen the pictures of Rahm [Emanuel] on that camel,” the president said, alluding to his recent trip to Egypt. “I admit, I was a little nervous about the whole situation. I said at the time, ‘This is a wild animal known to bite, kick, and spit. And who knows what the camel might do?’”
But don’t fret. Dinner organizers had their own fun with Obama.
If past galas were marked by a rapping Karl “MC” Rove and “funny-man” Mitt Romney this year’s entertainment centered around online comedy.
JibJab unveiled its first parody of the Obama administration, which pokes fun at Obama’s “superhero” image and big ears.
John Hodgman – the “PC guy” from the viral Mac computer commercials – put his nerdiness on display for the President and a fake-news segment from Onion News Network explained how journalists missed a huge story while rubbing elbows, with the scoop that Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner trades the country’s gold reserves for cash using Cash4Gold.com.

Wow, yet another joke about Fox News inside of a week. Obama again demonstrates that he’s a thin-skinned, petulant child that cannot handle criticism or dissent (or, rather the truth about the damage he’s causing). What a leader! NOT.

“And even with the party of NO, he is making gains!”
Can’t argue with that. Obama’s made gains in increasing unemployment, the deficit, taxes, inflation, overtaking private companies, escalating the Middle Eastern conflict, and putting us at greater risk for a terrorist attack. Thank goodness the “Party of NO” didn’t stand in his way!

Hodgman killed. Obama was funny and charming as usual. I’m amazed that the trolls who want to make this about ABC forget about Fox News’ all-access special on W. Bush a few years ago. Upstairs at the White House, out to the animal-less ranch in Crawford where Bush spent more vacation time than any other sitting president. Fox News was there, watching him clear the brush and talk hillbilly.

Remember just a few years ago when those who considered themselves “open-minded” (and never seemed to tire of reminding everyone else of this) embraced the line “Dissent is the highest form of patriotism?” (These same people often incorrectly attributed the line to Thomas Jefferson, but never mind that.) Why do these people today view dissent as an unforgivable sin and/or equate it to racism? Hmmmmm.

A President should expect nothing other than criticism from the press and the public except in the most critical times requiring national unity. It is no good for us to address what is done right, but we must always be vigilant about the starts of what is or could go wrong with respect to the presidential power. The same is true of government in general, but only in the office of the president must that criticism be borne by one individual.

You people are completed idiots and it’s not wonder we are all screwed. News flash no one can get us out of the mess we are in, absolutely no one. I want to congratulate Mark Leavenworth for a measured reminder to all that the presidency is a unique position that is under extremely close scrutiny, no matter who is in power, as it should be.
And I want to say that those of you who want to go to extremes with blame– either to say that Obama does nothing right or to say that everything is Bush’s fault and Obama does nothing wrong– are not helping your causes with your intransigency.

Most of Obama’s “taste” is in his mouth…and mouthy is certainly his forte. As a standup comic, he is fairly effective; as a president he is a flop. But then, again, he was reading his material. I know.. he is so busy with “affairs of state” he only has a few minutes to jolly up the press, but they don’t mind; they are a cheap date. (He did say they had stepped on his “Date Nite”, didn’t he? (Big Yuks!!)Most interesting were the “questions” from John Hodgman. they were pretty succinct, but didn’t get much response from the audience. Perhaps the questions were too close to home to be comfortable. Oh well, let’s all Yuk it up in the midst of the chaos. Nero fiddled; Obama goes to self-serving galas. Not much difference.

I hope President Obama will support Bill H.R.2743 to reinstate these businesses until they can be given a fair review. Why “reinvent” the auto industry where it was already successful?

Did you write “–Another–” in your title during all of Bush’s reporters dinners in tough times?
It’s pretty clear to me that no president likes doing these events, Bush or Obama, and especially doesn’t like the signal it gives during tough times.
But lest you forget, Ms. Tobianski and Mr. Tapper, are the endorsers and hosts of these events as television journalists.
So if you want to complain about it, direct at yourself for making Presidents come to this event for YOUR organizations instead of at the Presidents who more often than not are dragged kicking and screaming into these events.
I think the President needs new comedy writers — a professional one would help. But I appreciated his trying and sympathized with the annoyance of having to be funny.

“He won a majority, he is now a short 6 months into his presidency and he is now implementing his campaign promises.”
Didn’t he promise an “Era of Responsibility”?
He quadrupled the deficit. We have so much debt now, we can’t possibly ever pay it off.
Didn’t he promise “transparency”?
“Let me say it as simply as I can: transparency and the rule of law will be the touchstones of this presidency.”
Obama promised to post all bills sent to his desk online for 5 days for public scrutiny and comment before signing them.
That never happened.
Didn’t he promise no lobbyists in his administration?
“I don’t take a dime of their [lobbyist] money, and when I am president, they won’t find a job in my White House.”
He now has several lobbyists in his administration.
Didn’t he promise that unemployment would top 9% if Congress failed to pass the “stimulus” bill?
It’s now 9.4% (16.4% including underemployment) and rising.
Time to stop chugging the Hope and Change Kool-Aid and face reality. YOU WERE LIED TO. Are you going to blame Bush/Cheney for Obama’s lies too?

Stacey . .. .
When Bush left office the public debt was at over $10 trillion dollars . .. and the economy was in virtual free-fall collapse. These are facts you conveniently avoid.
President Obama has done exactly what he promised – he has made government MORE transparent, he has REDUCED the role of lobbyists in Washington, and he has invested in attempting to save jobs that are being lost due to the devastating condition the american economy was left in at the end of the Bush administration.
That you want him to be a perfect ‘messiah’ is your problem.

To Steve, Mr. Obama didn’t inherit anything. He desperately campaigned for a position knowing the risks, knowing the problems and I would of hoped, assuming the responsibilities too. He took the position under the guise he would make things better not worse and not continually blame other people. He’s made enough decisions; Bailouts, stimulus, buying GM and health care, where this is now his economy. Get over it…

When Bush’s 8 years were over, the country was $10 trillion in debt (sold off to China), the country’s economy was in free-fall and the U.S.A. had lost respect around the world due to Bush’s dismissive, arrogant approach. He had squandered all the good will towards america after 9/11.

National Health Care?!?! Do some of your own investigating into it without the skewed views of the media. Do you actually think the government will be able to acurately SECURE this system? The fleecing of Government welfare and other services(jobs, FEMA moneys, construction work) has long been documented. Government can’t even SECURE our borders! I see it everyday in the classroom; this feeling of entitlement without any incling of a work ethic. When the government GIVES things without having them work for it, it perpetuates apathy, dependence, and increased poverty. “Why work for it, when its free?”

Out of all of Bush’s mistakes I think this is the biggest one of all considering how this good will could have been used to open dialog with Muslim countries. After 9/11 there were massive prayers for the victims of 9/11. They also assisted up during our war in Afghanistan. And how did Bush thank them? Called them one of the Axis of Evil. I am so glad to have someone who understands treating other countries with respect instead of arrogance.

Most “spammers” I’ve talked to are a lot like me. I didn’t vote for Bush but he was my president and I backed him. I thought he did a number of correct things after 9/11; first and foremost going to war with Afghanistan to get Bin Laden. I thought it was a bad idea to use so many “locals” to fight with us, but I knew Bush’s information was so far greater than mine, so I accepted it. Even when Bin Laden escaped Tora Bora, possibly with the help of those same locals, I felt disappointed, but not made at Bush. I knew what he promised about getting Bin Laden and I had faith in him.
Then, Bush started talking about the Axis of Evil and how we have to invade Iraq. He told us that Bin Laden didn’t matter and wasn’t a priority. That’s when I gave up on Bush and all of his mistakes from then on just proved to me what a horrible President he really was.

LOL. I just provided evidence to the contrary. No amount of Kool-Aid inspired propaganda will change the fact that Obama LIED and the economy is getting WORSE.
Actually, I don’t believe things will get really bad until later this year and into 2010-2011. It takes several months for regulatory and tax policies to get enacted and really start doing their damage. Throw in the fact that people will also run out of unemployment and a ton of homeowners will lose their homes to Option ARM resets (esp. in Cali), and it’s going to get mighty ugly.

Stacey . …
You provided no proof of anything, but continue deluding yourself if you wish.
President Obama did not promise a miraculous cure for the economy, in fact he cautioned repeatedly that fixing the mess was not going to be easy and would take time.
People like you are the only ones foolish enough to call him ‘the messiah’ and expect him to be perfect.
All of the changes I outlined are CHANGES IN A POSITIVE direction, but not miracles a child’s mind might expect.

” Those weren’t spammers, those were americans across the political spectrum.
Have you forgotten that 70% of the country disapproved of Bush, Cheney and their approach.”

Ahhhh. Dissent is good when it’s against Bush–but dissenters are spammers when it’s leveled at Obama. Remarkable theory. heh

Ms. Trish . …
When you have 70% of the population against the failed policies of a government – it is far more than a few ‘dissenters’.
When you have people who come on forums every day to hate and attempt to smear the President regardless of what he says or does – those are spammers.
Their common tactics are fairly juvenile – name calling, insults, lies and ‘smear and fear’ campaigns.
Keep your eyes open, you’ll notice them without much trouble.

How exactly can you tell if a job has been “saved”?? It sounds simple, but think about it you can easily measure when a job has been “created”,since there would be more people working at these jobs, but how do you measure the number of “saved” jobs?? He surely doesn’t think that he “saved” every single job that someone is working at now…does he?

I never said anything about “a few dissenters.” Just summarized your theory: dissent against Bush was American–but against Obama it’s nothing but spammers.

Those are good questions.
I would think some saved jobs might be more obvious than others – jobs saved in financial institutions that were about to go under and perhaps jobs some jobs saved in the auto companies that were about to disappear.
Some other obvious jobs might come out of the money that has gone to states (and cities) who were about to cut back on various police, fireman, ambulance and similar type public jobs due to shortcomings in their financing.

Thank you for the explanation. That’s what I’ve seen for the past eight years against the former President. Now I know…all the lefties were spammers!

Ms. Trish . ..
Not at all. You’re totally misreading what I posted about spammers coming on here to badmouth the President day in and day out.
“When you have people who come on forums every day to hate and attempt to smear the President regardless of what he says or does – those are spammers.

Hopefully this allows you to better understand what is meant by spammers.
I don’t think you can label the 70% of the american people who opposed Bush and Cheney ‘spammers’ just because they answered polls honestly.

Yes, I do better understand now. Your definition describes perfectly what I have seen the left do for the past eight years.

Idiotic extremists surely exist on both sides of the spectrum.
This certainly does not excuse the right-wing hate spammers predominating on here.
You can pick them out easily, by their juvenile name-calling, insults, pet names and ‘fear and smear’ tactics.

The Presidents comments about turning to Williams “in bed” and asking his opinion wasn’t far from being wrong. Come this next week the bed will become a bit overcrowded with Charlie and the GMA crew in doing his healthcare infomercial.

You tell ‘em, Jimbo! The usual suspects around the world never liked a strong American president. Look how they were all over Reagan for example.
But now they got in yet another Dem who will weaken America. They probably thought that getting someone sorrier on foreign policy than Carter or Clinton was too much too hope for.
I won’t call this current administration ‘wimpy’ or the like. Sure, they will let anyone anywhere outside U.S. borders do pretty much what they want, but they will be very tough on those within the U.S. that are not down with their Marxist agenda.
Still trying to figure out how much of this admin’s doings is incompetence or how much of its seeming incompetence is actually by design?

Where were you on 9/11/01; 7/7/05 and March of 2004? Have those dates escaped you?
