Obama Says Aloha & Mahalo to Members of Congress

ABC News’ Sunlen Miller reports: “Aloha,” Hawaii native President Obama said to the crowd of 2,000 gathered on the South Lawn for the annual Congressional picnic, themed this year as a Hawaiian luau.

“I just want to say to all the members of Congress you’ve been working hard. I wish I could give you all trips to Hawaii but I figured that given our budget crunch we can’t do that, but we’d bring Hawaii to you.”

The President, wearing a pink Hawaiian lei introduced members of his family – also in leis – and the newest member of the Obama family.

“The star of the family,” Obama called him, “Bo Obama.”

The President’s remarks were brief, just under two minutes and he wrapped up by thanking members of Congress for the “unbelievable work” they are doing for the American people.

The Obamas along with the families and the members of Congress, will enjoy a Hawaiian meal made by famed Hawaiian chef Alan Wong who was flown in for the event.

The menu: Wasabi potato salad, Farm green salad, Lomi Lomi salmon, Stuffed new potatoes, BBQ baby back ribs, Kalua Pig, Shrimp and clams, Tilapia tempura rolls, Crispy chicken hoagie, Grilled lamb chops. Spiced short ribs  and Strawberry Tiramisu and Chocolate bars for dessert.

Large pineapples decorated the multi-colored tables on the South Lawn – where members of Congress mingled by the tiki huts handing out drinks, or played volleyball with large beach balls. The guests will also be treated to performances by Polynesian dancers, fire blowers and hula lessons.

Whew…it’s a good thing the era was excess was over..or the government would be wasting OUR money on frivolous things.

The tiramisu sounds tasty.

For those who object to the party, I’m sure it was already figured into the WH budget since it is a tradition not something Obama made up. The only thing I see wrong with it is flying in the chef and Obama’s own hypocrisy in telling others they couldn’t spend our money on frivilous things like flying in chefs for private parties. Otherwise, I’m wishing I had a plate of that tasty sounding food right about now.

Native of Hawaii? I would still like to see a valid birth certificate to prove it.

===Native of Hawaii?===
Actually, he is from Kansas when the moment calls for it, Indonesia when needed. Hawaii is probably the home of his heart and makes for a great party theme.

Well, I can’t believe I actually finally agree with something Obama has to say…I will admit that it is true when he says that the “work” congress is doing to (oh, I mean FOR) the American people is truly “unbelievable.” I’ll bet it was hard to figure out which one was the stuffed pig at this shindig.

I think it’s a good idea for those people to get out of their stuffed shirts and bring along their families. The presence of children is very important to adults; it often brings out the best in them and it helps them think past their own pomposity and to consider what’s best for future generations.

Wow! Not complaining one bit, but the cost of that menu probably exceeded my entire food budget for a year.

This is an annual event that goes back forever. So how come all you staunch conservatives never called it wasteful spending when it was hosted by George Bush or any of the other Republican spendthrifts in office for the last 30 years? You make me tired.

Posted by: dixie-chik | June 26, 2009, 12:19 am 12:19 am

Bush served fried chicken, no pun intended, hot dogs and potato salad…He did not fly in his favorite high priced chefs from Hawaii on the very day of promoting an new energy policy that is going to cost every American a bundle….

parellex_view . ..
You risk a lot bringing George W. Bush back into this equation. As discussed previously Bush spend huge amounts of time, money and resources flying back and forth to his ranch in Texas.
OH . ..
Here’s what you said originally . ..
‘I wonder if those are the same economists that said unemployment wouldn’t rise above 8.8% if the stimulus bill was passed…”
Here’s what they actually are alleged to have said . .
Hawaii is part of the United States and you’re begrudging the President a plane ticket for a cook. There is something really petty and misguided about this.
I guess it’s just the personal political agenda – smear the President for everything and anything.

Why wasn’t Ahmadinejad there? I guess he was busy directing the murder of protesters on the streets of Teheran.
Assad of Syria couldn’t make it either, busy sending jihadis into Iraq to kill American soldiers or just Iraqi civilians. Nasrallah from Hezbollah – too busy also, sending thugs to kill Iranians. Hamas? Well, Jimmy Carter was sent to invite them but they’re busy also sending thugs to kill Iranians.
Have I forgotten anyone?
Indeed, where is Chavez, Castro, & the Fearless Leader of North Korea?
But, N. Korea did promise to help in the fireworks by shooting a missile at us. See, Obama’s foreign policy brought results already.

Nothing like austerity to symbolize the tough economic times! You know, tighten the belt a bit to show solidarity with those rising numbers of unemployed ….

I think Axey is the voice of reason here. The luau sounds lovely and is a nice twist on the annual event that is most likely, as Axey said, built into the budget and not a hugely expensive affair. The only complaint I have, and it is a minor one which I share with Axey, is that it looks bad in these economic times with the President’s record of lecturing business leaders about excess entertainment expenses to fly a chef in all the way from Hawaii at government expense. It would have been better for the First Family to foot that portion of the bill and to let it be known that was the cherry on the top– the Hawaiian chef– was their gift to their guests.
Otherwise, party on, Garth.

I’m pretty sure the chef flew commercial, and the expense of a ticket from Hawaii to DC is not that excessive. That’s actually about as grandiose as a company springing for free drinks (a few kegs, cases of wine, and sodas), or maybe a swing band and portable dance floor at their annual picnic.
The black tie affairs really have to be considered in the context of the President’s role as chief diplomat, but a big ‘ol company picnic like this is as bread and butter as you can get.

jhw, you and I are in agreement (for once *G*). I said it was a minor quibble– the airfare for the chef. As you may remember, my ‘thang’ is not so much expense as symbolism. The WH is quite attuned, usually, to imagery. So I would have thought they’d avoid anything that even hints at extravagance in our current financial times. But as you say, it’s not a big deal. I’m glad the luau went well and that the first family gave a fresh spin to an annual event they inherited.

===I’m pretty sure the chef flew commercial===
Why are you pretty sure? Do you know something the rest of us don’t? For instance, when Obama had a pizza chef “flown in” it wasn’t commercial. I suspect, but don’t know, the chef didn’t fly commercial. If you have something that backs up your “pretty sure” would you mind sharing it with us?

sphinx4162 — yeah, incredulous ain’t it… some folks still being hung-up on the birth certificate thing. I remember how, when Cheney was a resident of Texas back in 2000 and picked by Bush to be his running mate, to get around the Constitutional prohibition against state electors voting for presidential and vice presidential candidates from the same state, Cheney just declared his residence to by Wyoming even though he had a Texas drivers license, had filed income tax returns from Texas, and had even voted from Texas in previous elections. Democrats had to get beyond that and move on. I wonder why so many Republicans can’t seem to do likewise and accept the 2008 election results.

Why? There are a lot of us that appreciate George W. Bush and 62,000,000 of us voted for him in 2004. 7,000,000 fewer than Obama. Pretty amazing when you think about the slobbering lovefest Obama receives. And as someone pointed out in another thread, George W. Bush has the highest approval ratings ever recorded by a US president.

Obama should expect more of this if he keeps using the financial crisis to spend our money. Clinton wasn’t criticized for spending money on WH traditions.

Posted by: Axey | June 26, 2009, 11:34 am 11:34 am

This is an annual event and I’m sure it’s part of the yearly White House budget. Frankly, the convivial atmosphere where Democrats and Republicans, and their families, can have a bit of fun and good food says a lot about American politics and culture. Can you imagine this kind of activity in the UK for example?
And for Tony, where on earth is this new “idea” about the President trying to
make the “term limit” of the President for life? One, term limit means that the term is limited to a specific period of time and the office holder cannot be re-elected consecutively. Secondly, the President’s term is set by a Constitutional amendment. It’s not so easy to overturn one of those. Ease up a bit and take your Valium.

BachiaBeat, Tony is indeed a bit overheated, but I think I can explain the part of his rant in which he said the president is trying to have the limits on his term removed. This is undoubtedly a reference to a piece of legislation proposed in congress to repeal the 22nd amendment that limits anyone from serving more than 2 terms as president. The same thing came up during the clinton years– people bandied about amending the constitution to allow someone to serve more than two terms, and when it came up, the discussion often revolved around whether it could be applied to a sitting president, so that Clinton could run for a third term, or if it would exclude the current office holder at the time it became ratified, as that person would have been elected under the old rules.
Having explained the reference, I rush to add that there is absolutely no evidence that the president has shown any interests in supporting this legislation. His fan club? They are a different matter.

Tony: Everyone’s Birth Records are “hidden” as in not available for public scrutiny without release by an authorized person. I can’t come to your state and demand to have your birth certificate released just because I might want to see it. The POTUS is allowed that same protection. That would be a no-brainer for everybody except the Can’t-Get-Over-Obama-Winning-Limbaugh-Hanniy-Koolade-Drinking crowd.

Here, we all eat Totinos party pizzas… while he eats decadent pizzas in his mansion.
Have you seen the lawn on the White House? Did you know that he doesn’t even mow it himself? He has his servants do it!!!!
Did you know that he is meeting with the prime minister of Germany!? The closest I have ever gotten to Germany is the half-empty bottle of Heineken that I found on a coffee table at a party one time. And when I went to drink it, I found out that someone was using it as a spitter for the chew. So, I didn’t even get any actual Heineken.

Dear, had Obama not told execs (not that it is okay) but had he not told them to stop spending tax payers dollars on trips to Vegas or to the Super Bowl party because we are in the middle of a huge economic crisis, then a hissy fit would not be in order.
Instead, he continues on with parties, spends HUNDRED-Of-THOUSANDS of tax payers dollars to take his wife to another state for a date night (a date mind you he could have done in Washington at a FAR LESS COST TO US), spend hundreds-of-thousands of tax payers dollars to do a fly over in air force one to take pictures (really necessary???), spent hundreds-of-thousands of dollars to stay an extra day while in London with his family on the tax payers dime.
Now, most would say that qualifies for most of us to be a little ##### because if we are expected to cut back then SO SHOULD CONGRESS—this includes Obama.

Here is what was done June 5 2008….compare the menus:
Jun 5 2008 10:18PM
Associated Press
White House (AP) President Bush and members of Congress put political differences aside for the annual congressional picnic on the White House South Lawn.
Some 1,700 people milled beneath white tents and at picnic tables eating barbecued ribs, Corn on the cob and potato salad.
Children Danced amid bubbles and rode a roving train, and there was a small floor for square dancing.
However, I did notice that there was lots of PORK on the menu LOL

The same piece of legislation has been offered by the same Congressman half a dozen times including 3 or 4 times during Bush’s term.

Posted by: Ryan C | June 26, 2009, 4:05 pm 4:05 pm

Ryan, yeah, I figured that this congressman is like a dog with a bone and keeps proposing his pet project over and over. But there wasn’t much discussion of it by anyone else that I heard during the Bush years– now, there’s a surprise. *G* I remember my dad being all for the repeal back in the clinton years, because he was/is a huge President Clinton fan. Probably I just noticed the talk on the cable shows about the proposal back then because of his interest in the topic. Because dad certainly did not want any more years of bush than he got. :)

I hear there were a few House Dems who stayed away from the festivities for fear of being strong-armed by Obama and Chicago Rahm Emanuel because they were resistant to voting for the bogus TAX Bill that Obama calls Cap and Trade. The Bill barely squeaked through by just 7 votes. If it passes the Senate it will be the largest TAX BILL ever served on our country, $700 BILLION dollars. Guess who gets to pay it? Better call your Senators and tell them to vote NO on this “huge regressive tax,” as Warren Buffett calls it.
