Roundtable: Palin Proves ‘Feisty’ Against Letterman
Our “This Week” Roundtable got into it this morning on the details of the health care reform plan, Iran’s controversial election and what it means for a thawing of U.S.-Iran relations, and Alaska’s Republican Gov. Sarah Palin’s latest headline-grabbing assault on David Letterman’s joke about her daughter.
Joining me on the Roundtable: ABC contributors George Will and Donna Brazile, the Wall Street Journal’s Kimberley Strassel and National Journal’s Ron Brownstein:

Obama Backs Off Birth Control Battle?
The Palin “flap” is just that: a flap. It means nothing. She would love for folks like you to keep the thing going, because she would like to energize her “base” by riling them against the hated NY media. Please.
Letterman was wrong, but not nearly wrong enough for Palin to continue this. Brownstein was right. She needs to have something substantive to say about the many problems Americans face today. Instead, she finds something to be “victimized” about and pounds it into the pavement. She remains “unready for prime time.” Please
stop talking about her. Even thoughtful Republicans find her an eembarrassment.

I could not believe my ears this morning watching this totally biased group excusing the totally inappropriate remarks of Letterman and again blaming Palin for reacting! How dare any of you that most likely have children; grandchildren etc., look on this as a Palin “grandstanding”! Now picture this – Letterman makes the same crude; offensive and disgusting remarks about one of the Obama or Biden females. Letterman on CBS would be a thing of the past faster than the speed of light. Also Letterman’s calling Sarah Palin a “slut” is beneath contempt. I will never watch you George ever again. I used to have some modicum of respect for you – but no more. You are all just as guilty as Letterman by your condoning such conduct all in the name of “good fun”. You women on the panel I am the most disgusted with – have you no sense of decency or compassion? Shame! Shame! Shame!

The Roundtable on health care June14,2009: George did not have a balanced panel today: three anti-public health care and one pro(Donna B). Why?Usually George has a balanced discussion panel!Does George oppose the public health care option?
Posted by: Harry Howell | June 14, 2009, 1:49 pm 1:49 pm
On todays Roundtable(George Stephanopolis) George had three anti-public health care, and one pro.George usually has a balanced panel of discussion. Why not on this very important issue was it not balanced? George, are you anti-public health care option?
Posted by: Harry Howell | June 14, 2009, 1:53 pm 1:53 pm
These people on the panel (expect Brazil)live in TV land where everything is just fine. Truth is small business is being crushed by the costs of health care. Over 50% of bankruptcies are health care related. In the republican world business is before the people always. This would be why republicans are losing elections. George Will is a fool and just like most corporatist republicans laughs in the face of hardworking Americans struggling to get by everyday.
Posted by: Andrew | June 14, 2009, 1:58 pm 1:58 pm
As usual George Will longs for the ‘Golden Age of America’, you know the ‘Gilded Age.’ The country run by and for a tiny oligarchy of the extremely wealthy. No progressive income tax, in fact no income tax at all. No Social Security system or Medicare. No unions or worker protections. No environmental regulations.

I forgot to add that this was really some debate concerning health care reform wasn’t it? One lukewarm advocate of a public plan, and three adamantly opposed?

Sarah “SixPack” Palin is just plain scary. We are fortunate not to have her a “heart-beat from the Presidency. If Palin’s the future of the Republican Party, then the GOP is in big trouble.
Meg Whitman ex-eBay CEO & Carly Fiorina ex HP CEO both endorsed Sarah SixPack, both are running 4 office in Calif, Gov & Senator. I’m sure they thought to themselves, Sarah Palin is not too bright, so “why don’t we run for office too?”
But both Whitman and Fiorina, these intelligent woman were dumb enough to be Lemmings & endorse Sarah Palin, how can we respect their judgement and vote for them into office in California?
I’m sorry, but the Republican Party needs to do more than Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh.

What a disgrace for any Politician to openly accused someone of exciting rape of a minor icing the cake by telling viewers that person is a “pervert”. This is pretty strong. Why in the name God would David Letterman a man in his position and power with the public. Ever do that to himself. Sure he was referring to the wrong person the center of his joke? But, he did clarify his comment and stated he was sorry. I think if that happened to a member of my family. I would have called Mr. letterman and request a clarification about his joke. Then and only then, if un-happy with the answer, I would say something publicly.
This seems like Gov. Palin wants to keep things going in order to soak up free publicity. All people in the public the public eye gets blasted by the comics. You must have a tough skin and put your sensitivity in your back pocket. This is a shame the Governor is blowing this up at the expense of her family. Let it go.

Can someone please put this Palin thing in perspective. Originally:
A. this was a JOKE
B. this was a JOKE made by a comedian
C. this was a JOKE made by a comedian on
late night TV
If every Working Politician held a press conference for the jokes made against them, Really Nothing would get done. Palin, get over yourself. Next time, don’t parade your offspring during your elections, particularly the one prego out of wedlock. Maybe people wouldn’t get such a kick out of shooting holes in your “program”.

One has to watch the NBC Palin/Lauer interview to get the real picture, as virtually all of the “reports” about it out there are typically slanted. Lauer shot questions with barley concealed contempt, and at a speed designed to trip her up. The Governor stood her ground and shot right back at him, and in the end she owned the both Lauer and the interview. It was abundantly clear that Lauer was not pleased with the result. Clearly Mr Palin has resolved not to be blind sided by another Katy Couric type attack.
Those that pretend she is some sort of unread bimbo, or a “Sarah Six Pack” type bumpkin, are in for a very rude awakening. The Governor has an incredibly sharp and agile mind behind that photogenic face. The Obama worshiping media knows it and is working overtime to characterize her as an idiot before the public figures this out. After the wreckage of four years of Obama tyranny, she will be exactly what America will need to restore the Nation…
God’s speed Sarah Palin, we are counting the minutes.

Oh, is that what it’s called now feistiness? I call it lying. Palin didn’t have any problem attacking 18-year-old Levi Johnston. Isn’t he somebody’s teenage child? Sarah claims she cares about rape victims but she made the women in her home state pay for their own rape kits. All Sarah wanted was another opportunity to attack President Obama and she took it calling him “He who must be obeyed” and saying he said children should be off limits. He was defending her children at the time, which Sarah conveniently forgot to mention. Now her rabbit followers are dragging Obama’s daughters into this mess when they know the president had nothing to do with what happened. I remember that Rush Limbaugh called Chelsea Clinton the “Family DOG” and I didn’t hear a lot of outrage from the right about that. Sarah is an attack dog by her own admission and she uses her kids as if they are chess pieces in her political games. Sarah is not feisty she is a disgusting example of motherhood.

If this weren’t Palin, if this were the child of a Democratic politician, the outrage would have been swift and severe and the parent wouldn’t have even needed to respond.
What happened to the children of politicians being “off limits”?

To the GOP:
If you hate Obama so much, then don’t put Palin in front.
If you do, you will lose by a huge margin and make yourself look even sillier.
Palin is not anyone to take seriously in politics or any other medium.

Was what Letterman said wrong? Yeps pretty much. Did Palin read way too much into it and grossly overreact? Yes to that as well. If she overreacts to this degree at something a comedian says what is she gonna do in a position of real power that can involve a great deal of sensitive discussion like the President or Vice President. It seems she has tried to use this joke in bad taste to make herself a martyr, a role she has repeatedly used during the campaign and even while running for Governor. It is a role she assumes at the slightest hint that she is at a disadvantage, and one that would never serve her on an international scale.

I must be out of step. How did this become an offense to the Palin’s? If you look at what was said, it was Alex R. and professional sportsmen who were accused of “knocking up” young girls! Sports fans,… where’s the outrage?!!
Posted by: VINBO | June 14, 2009, 9:20 pm 9:20 pm
Palin attacked the 18 year old who fathered her grandchild after he told the truth about staying with her daughter in her home. You are a JOKE.
Posted by: tychisum | June 14, 2009, 9:25 pm 9:25 pm
Letterman is a jerk and should appologize publicly instead of claiming he was trying to insult the older daughter. Lets see the outrage if he insults the Obama girls.
Posted by: Charlie C | June 14, 2009, 10:41 pm 10:41 pm
OK..Let’s be real if the joke has been on one of the Obama’s or Biden children Letterman will without a doubt looking for another job right now. Why is it that when it comes that we have such a double standard ?? wrong is wrong and should be exposed and the guilty party exposed !

I think Letterman is a disgrace and needs to apologise for having a low opinion about women and his cheap sexist jokes.
CBS needs to fire letterman if it wants to retain any credibility or public respect.

for two weeks I have been unable to find This Week with G.S. on T.V. The cable schedule shows the usual spot an info mercial and not the program. At a completely different time I get part of it recorded but it is very frustrating.
The cable co. blames ABC but how can I find the full transcript of the 7th and 14th????

Everyone should buy into what the liberal media Leviathan is spitting out. Lets close our minds, read these hackneyed blind Obama endorsements and other like-minded articles, and censor any opposition articles and facts. Together we can ostracize anyone who thinks differently than what the liberal establishment dictates. Together we can further bankrupt America, continue to make jabs at the daughter of the of a former vice presidential candidate, read our Perez Hilton and censor and make lewd remarks about a beauty pageant contestant who dared speak her mind, be racist against everyone who isn’t black, show our intolerance for Mormons, be sexist, and live an empty meaningless existence while having a good laugh making fun of everyone who doesn’t agree with us and making up vapid stories of people in Hollywood while the economy continues to crumble, America’s power wanes, and our soldiers continue to die in Iraq and Afghanistan (funny how the media doesn’t report on this anymore). YES WE CAN!
Posted by: Xavier M | June 15, 2009, 2:56 am 2:56 am
If Don Imus (who has less notoriety than David Letterman) gets fired and is hung by the media for calling college females (“nappy headed” expletive; note rappers call themselves and black females all the time; and not everyone on the team was even black), then Letterman should get an even worse result for attacking an underage girl.
But the media will conveniently shield David Letterman because they are deathly afraid of Sarah Palin. Attention, liberal media, the McCain/Palin campaign lost; what are you so afraid of? Maybe you’re worried the public will finally wake up to your brainwashing. Like Honest Abe once quipped, “you can fool all of the people some of the time, and you can fool some people all of the time, but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.” And people are finally starting to wake up. Bye bye, liberal media censorship; the 1st Amendment will make a comeback with a vengeance and GOOD CHANGE will come.

Next thing you know, Letterman will be saying that George Stef is gay. And we all know that’s not true. Well don’t we?
Uh, we do don’t we? Well maybe not.

a joke.. serious folks.. i’ve worse jokes about people.. number one: if you can’t take a late night joke, there is no room for you in politics at all.. had that been kim jong or the iranian president that said that, what would she do? have a big fit and press the red button? seriously, if you can’t keep your cool when a mere comedian talks about you, how are you gonna prevent yourself from jumping off the deep end when foreign leaders, especially the ones who see women as a weak gender, make those same remarks. I’m tired of her “lipstick” antics, frankly.

George Will really needs to get out and listen to the real people and even other public news stations on what is going on with the health care. There are alot of people that would like to talk to you on where to get healthcare, what care and services their providers decide not to offer, what doctor and when you can see them. Check your local Emergency Rooms or Clinics if they haven’t closed down. We are paying for it now. Talk to Doctors. All of my Doctor’s say HMO’s are not good. One quit and went to physical therapy.

Before I say anything …let me say Letterman’s comments were totally inappropriate. However…he meant her 18 year old daughter and Palin knows this. She has decided to make this more of an issue than necessary by saying he meant her younger daughter. He did not…but for her to continue on this is wrong. It does keep her in the headlines but not for the right reason. She should be thinking about doing her job in Alaska which I read the people of Alaska have been feeling that she is not doing. To continue on this story makes her look too Hollywood.

I tried to post this before…anyway, here I go again…I feel the Letterman comment was insensitive and totally outrageous. Having said that, Palin is trying to make it appear that he was talking about her younger daughter which he was not..he meant her older daughter and Palin knows this. To keep this fude going is not a wise thing. She is getting publicity but not the right kind. If she want to be taken seriously, she needs to concentrate on running Alaska which she has been neglecting and from what I read, some of her people are getting tired of her. Her pipeline is controversial and maybe will be be put through so she needs to stick to the important stuff.

I AGREE JOE (stand up Chuck) BIDEN HAS BEEN A REAL STEP UP (NOT!). He makes more bone headed comments that Saturday night live ever made up about Palin. Dems are scared of Palin not because they think she is stupid. If they really though that they would ignore her. But she can a crowd of 20,000 with no problem and that scares them Dems they know she relates with people and could pose a threrat to their strangle hold on power. So there for the libs and the liberal media feel they must destroy her.

a 2006 kaiser report … page 6 & 7..
shows 46.5 million as uninsured in 2006
of which, 36 million were native and naturalized citizens 7 million were non-citizens that have lived in the united states for 6+years.
so who are we to believe, George and the panel or Kaiser?

Palin is a grave threat to the bi-partisan governing elite in the U.S., as well as the media elite.
That is why they tried to nuke her during the campaign.
That she didn’t go to Harvard or Yale, is a conservative Republican and a ‘small town’ Mom, she is radioactive, as far as her opposition is concerned.
You go girl!

Well, Al Shapton has found a weasel way around all this.
In his words, Imus “offended” an entire race with his “nappy-haired hos” comments. Hence his punishment, losing his job, was “justified”!
Somehow good old “Al” missed the fact that rappers had been using the EXACT same terminology for YEARS! He never called for record companies to fire those so-called entertainers.
Now Letterman goes just as much, if not more overboard than Imus, and now its not a punishable offense because he only attacked an “individual” with his comments.
Oh yeah, and for those who think Dave was really aiming at Bristol Palin…,
guess again, that “joke” was not an off-the-cuff piece of material, they had a lot of time to prep it and check on it. Dave just thought it was cool to take another shot at Palin, he seriously under-estimated the response of the American People.
Can’t wait to see more Lefty excuses like Shapton’s….More of the typical Liberal life-style…. DO AS I SAY….NOT AS I DO!!!!
Posted by: Mike_C | June 16, 2009, 1:35 pm 1:35 pm
Sure you people are outraged about something said about palin but not one of you would be caught dead protesting the comments made by Imus or all the gorilla jokes about the First Family.

Truthfully, I hope she keep this stupidity with Letterman up. Actually, he is winning as his ratings have gone up. While I agree his remarks were absolutely tasteless…she made her point and she should move on. To continue along this path is showing just how badly she wants publicity…any kind. This will not help her win a nomination.

I just finished watching, This weeks round table. The discussion on healthcare. You people just don’t get it. The one woman with the black hair
showed not only how stupid she is, but just how out of touch with reality she is. The people are not against “health care reform”.
They are against Obama’s healthcare bill. They are against the taxes and the mandates and any government in the healthcare.
The people know this, the federal government has bankruted this country. They have bankrupted social security and medicare.
And they are looking at Obama stripping them of their constitutional rights of free choice. They are also looking at Mass.healthcare.
Their cost are out of control and their premiums, have gone up 30%. I have been reading and watching everything on this issue. The
only group of people that are going to make out are the poor. That’s Obama’s plan, free healthcare for the poor. So he can buy votes.
There are 320 million people in this country and it’s his plan to throw 290 million people under the bus to give healthcare to 30
million. The government is already subsidizing the poor. This whole healthcare bill is a con. Because virtually every issue on
healthcare can be address in the private sector. Know this. If this bill, the taxes and mandates are shoved down the throats
of the American people. You are going to see a massive migration of businesses and jobs out of this country that you’ve never
seen before. Virtually every business in this country has Chinia, Korea,India on speed dail. You answer me this.” How does
huge tax increases and massive government expansion equal lower health care cost.” IT DOESN’T. Based on what I have read.
My costs are going up 2 to 3 thousand dollars on top of what I’am paying. So Obama can give free healthcare to the poor, NO…….
This bill is a no. The first issue is the economy and jobs. Obama is not addressing this because if this bill gets through. He is going to
have a massive damage control on the economy and jobs, then watch how much money he throws at the issue. This bill isn’t about
healthcare it’s about Tax revenue and cash flow.
The people can see this. NO ON THIS HEALTHCARE BILL.
One very angry taxpayer. Ed Dishart
