Palin: Betcha I Can Beat Obama — in a Race

ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: Gov. Sarah Palin lost the campaign against President Obama, but she’s pretty sure she can win another kind of race.  “I betcha I'd have more endurance,” Palin, R-Alaska, tells Runners World, in a Q & A and photo spread in the new magazine.  “My one claim to fame in my own little internal running circle is a sub-four [hour] marathon. It wasn't necessarily a good running time, but it proves I have the endurance within me to at least gut it out and that is something, if you ever talk to my old coaches they'd tell you, too. What I lacked in physical strength or skill I made up for in determination and endurance. So if [it] were a long race that required a lot of endurance I'd win.”  Asked where the race should be, she responded: “I'd like him to come to Alaska so he can see the beauty of this 49th state.”  In an interview that’s going public the same day as a magazine piece recounts McCain aides’ frustrations with her, Palin voices some displeasure with Sen. John McCain’s aides — for not allowing her enough time to run. “Sweat is my sanity. A great frustration I had during the campaign was when the McCain staff wouldn't carve out time for me to go for a run. The days never went as well if I couldn't get out there and sweat,” she said.  She also tells the story behind why she was wearing a bandage during her debate with Vice President Joe Biden. “I went for a run at John McCain's ranch a couple of days before the debate with Joe Biden. My favorite thing in the world is to run on hot, dusty roads. I don't get enough of that in Alaska. So I was in heaven and there were plenty of hills so I knew my thighs were going to just throb and my lungs were going to burn and that's what I crave,” she says.  “I like running alone and having the Secret Service with me added a little bit of pressure. I'm thinking I gotta have good form and can't be hyperventilating and can't be showing too much pain and that adds a little more pressure on you as you're trying to be out there enjoying your run. Then I fell coming down a hill and was so stinkin' embarrassed that a golf cart full of Secret Service guys had to pull up beside me. My hands just got torn up and I was dripping blood. In the debate you could see a big fat ugly Band-Aid on my right hand. I have a nice war wound now as a reminder of that fall in the palm of my right hand. For much of the campaign, shaking hands was a little bit painful.”

Is it any wonder that so many people hate Sarah Palin? She just will not sit down and shut up. She’s giving interviews to Runners World and anyone else who will give her a nanosecond in the spotlight. What’s next…Garden Gnomes World?

Could she be any more ridiculous?

…when the Dems are represented by an idiot like Pelosi, they sure can’t say much about anything Palin does.

Yeah, I think we’re done, Sarah. Go away.

Posted by: Mark | June 30, 2009, 5:41 pm 5:41 pm

could these people be any more jealous of Sarah Palin? She is definately giving less interviews than Obama who is supposed to run the country and fix the economy. Not a single day goes by without him being in the news. He is a spotlight junkee.

I think Palin wishes to get back to those $100,000.00 clothes shopping sprees and free plane rides.

Great. She should become a runner and quit politics.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
What a ridiculous comment!
Obama is the PRESIDENT. Communicating with the American people is a GOOD thing. It’s not like he’s giving press conferences to pat himself on the back about what a great runner he is…he’s talking about issues that concern all of us.

Posted by: whocares | June 30, 2009, 5:52 pm 5:52 pm

Obama is the president. He’s supposed to be in the news shaping events, and pushing congress, talking to the muslim world, giving press conferences, meeting foreign leaders and issuing joint statements. Palin maybe if she had something useful to say and not something ridiculuous or chastising her grandson’s father, or firing her own brother inlaw or campaigning against her mother inlaw as mayor?

ABC — Shame on you! You know exactly why you printed this story! It has nothing to do with politics or the Country’s current situation — it makes her an easier target — belittling on the blogs continues. No problem reporting about how good looking Pres Obama is, the Vegatable gardens, Michelles wardrobe, etc… If it’s about the Pres it’s always pure ecstasy! You can’t continue this forever, the gig is almost up!

I live in Fairbanks and even Alaskans wish Palin would just shut up. She’s determined to prove that she’s an idiot and she’s doing a fine job. She’s made our state a laughing stock and the more she talks the deeper she digs her hole. She was fooling a lot of Alaskans until she hit the national stage and so many of her dirty political secrets were revealed. She won’t get another shot at being governor, you betcha’.

Posted by: Jenna | June 30, 2009, 6:11 pm 6:11 pm

OH MY GOD! AND TO THINK THIS WOMAN COULD HAVE BEEN SECOND IN COMMAND! SHE IS AN IDIOT WITH NO OFF SWITCH!!

Posted by: lp | June 30, 2009, 6:16 pm 6:16 pm

Omg. This is the stupidest thing abcnews has ever posted. Who cares if power-hungry Palin thinks she can out run Obama, she probably could simply due to the fact she has been able to spit out all those babies and kills large undomesticated animals. Does any one else think it is ironic that her 5th child has something wrong with it. She should be staying home taking care of those poor kids instead of neglecting them. Shame on her. It looks like she would acknowledge the signs and just give up this desire to become so famous/in charge. She is so anti-feminist it is offensive to the gender itself. Blah! Shame on abcnews for posting this waste of space. Shame on me for responding. I just think it’s silly!

Finally, she says something I can believe. Up till now I thought their was somebody pulling a string in her back like a “Chatty Cathy” doll. It is good to hear she is a real person.

Posted by: jon | June 30, 2009, 6:30 pm 6:30 pm

C’mon folks. In this article, Palin does nothing more than discuss a sport she loves with a magazine devoted to that sport. She’s a public figure, a successful governor, a former vice presidential candidate and a dedicated runner and she’s still very popular in some circles.
My grandmother always said “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” If an article about Sarah Palin inspires you to hurl nasty insults, try avoiding those articles. Nobody will force you to read Runners Magazine just like nobody forced you to click on this story, read the article and comment about it. You made those choice all by yourself.

Posted by: Melissa | June 30, 2009, 6:31 pm 6:31 pm

How dare an avid runner like Palin agree to an interview in “Runner’s World”? That’s so outrageous, I can see why the liberals hate her so much. Good thing ABC News is reporting on this travesty instead of Obama’s wonderful socialist agenda.

Posted by: Open-Mind | June 30, 2009, 6:32 pm 6:32 pm

Posted by: Hal | June 30, 2009, 6:34 pm 6:34 pm

The real issue is the numb skulls who continue to support this woman. She’s a joke who is not even bright enough to realize she’s a joke–or is too narcissistic to admit it. That you actually believe she has any business in political office demonstrates what is wrong with this country. Smirking incompetence is a not a qualification for president. Didn’t 8 years of Bush teach you that?

Posted by: Mickey7 | June 30, 2009, 6:37 pm 6:37 pm

I think one reason why liberals feel threatened by Palin is that for someone who has had five kids and is a grandmother – she still looks good in a Runners World photo spread. Show me one prominent liberal grandmother who is in as good shape.

Posted by: Mickey7
Yes, that’s very true. Smirking incompetence is definitely not a qualification for president …. but generally experience as a governor is considered qualification. Politics aside, Palin’s history of involvement in her state and community is something we once admired in this country. Now, if da party boss says “hate her,” the followers do as they’re told.

Posted by: Think about it | June 30, 2009, 6:45 pm 6:45 pm

I think Sarah Palin could run political rings around Obama, so far he has flip flopped & not jump started anything. The economy keeps getting worse. He is not securing Americas Energy or Job’s or Healthcare for the future. Alaska is in far better condition than the lower 48. And Sarah get’s the credit. She has more experience & probably could do the job. Besides what do you really expect from a president who thinks there are 57 states?

Posted by: toldyaso | June 30, 2009, 6:51 pm 6:51 pm

Amazing…The critics – most of them like most Americans, overweight or obese – sitting in front of their laptops or desktops, probably eating a Big Mac or Whopper, while belching every thirty seconds, have the gall (like Andrea McClure) to jump all over a mother of five who is able to run a sub-four-hour marathon. And, the governor is probably correct, she cound out run Obama; after-all, the President is a smoker and smokers are not your usual long-distance runners. So, instead of the complaints, why don’t more Americans get up and attempt to run one-tenth of the distance Governor Palin runs. Maybe then, your physical appearance will equal Sarah Palin’s (she looks really good). By the way: I am an avid runner and a strong believer in physical fitness…Doing it at least 5 times a week.

Posted by: Percy | June 30, 2009, 6:53 pm 6:53 pm

people are so jealous of Sarah, she has brains and beauty and to top it off, endurance and stamina…
Obama is a wussy who has none of that… he’s pelosi’s puppet and that’s all he’s got.

Posted by: joy | June 30, 2009, 7:01 pm 7:01 pm

What you people don’t hear about in the news is that Palin is running a state. She is doing many good things but the media only reports the stuff that makes her look simple.

Why? Some of us like reading about Sarah Palin. Why would we want her to stop giving interviews? If you don’t enjoy reading about Sarah’s favorite sport, don’t read about it, but it should have no impact on your life that others do want to read about it. Why would you want to deprive your fellow Americans of good, wholesome reading? Why would you want to deprive a magazine the chance to achieve record-breaking sales (which will happen with this magazine)?
It’s really disturbing that people have this mentality of I don’t want to read about Sarah Palin so no one else shall read about her either.

To Michael and whocares: You guys are right, she should ‘sit down and shut up.’ She should stay in the kitchen and make me a sandwich. Women shouldn’t be allowed to express an opinion or lead in government. That’s for men only.

Typical fake (like Sarah very, very fake) pr stuff.
Bottom line she won’t run for re-election as gov (ala Mitt Romney) for fear of an open campaign, as in she can dish it out but she sure can’t take it, and she wouldn’t get re-elected anyway.
Also I bet she tried to keep all those outfits she wore in the photo shoots.

No, actually, it’s just getting started. Her governor’s term doesn’t expire until 2010 – she’s bound to remain in the spotlight at least until then, possibly longer if she decides to run for a second term or for another office.

Posted by: Previous comment | June 30, 2009, 7:51 pm 7:51 pm

I would becha that most of these people calling Sarah “a joke,” “an unfit mother,” “an idiot,” etc. have probably never run for public office in their lives and have no hope of achieving the kind of financial and political success Sarah Palin has achieved.
Their contribution to their communities doesn’t extend far beyond sitting at their computers thinking up witty insults to write.

Liberals are funny. They are absolutely petrified of this woman. They can’t imagine a real American ascending to higher office. Someone who won’t kiss the special interests behinds. I would much rather see a woman of good moral character in the White House than that lying sack that occupies it now. At least she would let Americans run their own lives rather than the man-child Obama forcing government down our throats. You people fear her. All you can do is make up stories about how dumb and backward she is. NEWS FLASH. Most Americans can relate more closely to her than the Chicago thug and his evil horde of tax evaders. Go ahead and belittle her and show us how much you are afraid the true America will wake up and vote you Socialists into oblivion. Have a nice day!

I’ve seen The Man Who Came to Dinner – amusing. But The Woman Who Came To Be Interviewed is tiresome. Watch the campaign appearances where she has the crowd worked up and yelling, “Kill him!” – hat’s all the information we need about her character. (McCain stopped an irrational supporter. Palin just smiled.)

Having the symbol of her son’s deployment and the American flag draped over what looks like a bar stool is disgraceful. To have these two things used as props in a photo shoot, for a running mag. no less, says more about her as a person and a mother than anything that comes out of her mouth. Shame on anyone that would use a blue star to further their personal goals.

Oh Sara, this is kind of ridiculous, don’t you think? After, both of you are in your 40s, and I think it’s time to just leave “things” the way the stand. You lost in that now famous election, and I don’t think President Obama has to accept your challenge — after all, he’s in the White House, and you are back in Alaska.
Besides, it’s not about running (physical feats), it’s about your knowledge, brain power, and ideas — it’s mental, not physical.
Besides, being the governor of a big state with not many people living in it leaves you a great deal of time to run and to go shoot some moose. Mr. Obama is in charge of over 300 million people, 50 states, some territories, four major branches of the military, a suit case that has buttons to launch missiles, a cabinet, several departments, and the affairs and relationships with other countries, friends and foes alike.
NO. I don’t think he has time for a race Governor Palin, with all due respect.
Moreover, I am a republican, and I am embarrassed by having to point out these facts.

Posted by: lavampire | July 1, 2009, 2:30 am 2:30 am

Can you baaaallieevve it? Ms. Sarah Palin, the type of running you do is not necessarily a race against other people, but it is a race against yourself — the fact that you are in pursuit of improving yourself and your performance times.
I don’t think President Obama will even contemplate the thought of running against you because he is quite burden by the position he currently manages which is president to over 300 million Americans and leader of the free world.

Posted by: lavampire | July 1, 2009, 2:40 am 2:40 am

I personally think that Obama is definately not the right person to be in office. By the time you idiots realize that you made a mistake by electing him into office it is going to too late to restore our Constitution, Health Care system, economy and possibly our very existence. I believe that Palin would have made a much better president and I hope that she runs in the next presidential election. Then she can not only beat him in a foot race but also a morals and intestinal fortitude race.

ABC has their priorities bass ackwards. They focus on this foolishness and Michael Jackson and fail to give coverage to the house ramming through a 1300 page cap and trade bill with 300 pages of last minute ammendments that not one representative claims to have read. Don’t they want the American public to know how much closer we are to the largest tax increase in history in the way of increase prices for anything that relies on energy? The slugs that thought they were getting a freee ride from Obama are going to be hit the hardest. Wake up America and go to Fox News for some real and balanced reporting.

Honestly feel, there should have been something more serious to read or write about, other then Palin’s ability to run a marathon or discuss about her endurance .For instance, the ecomony, Iraq ,Iran, Sudan or the war against Talibans in Afganistan and Pakistan !!!
Obama doesn’t need to compete with Palin to prove anything.

Posted by: Peter P | July 1, 2009, 7:47 am 7:47 am

Palin gets attention because she’s viewed as a threat to Obama. Obama supporters are afraid because she a natural politician who has wide-spread appeal. Many now realize that Obama is no different from George W. Bush, who was simply a money machine with out any ideas, experience, or leadership skills.
Palin can count on the press to keep her in the news. She needs to respond to accusations and insults as they come out, and that is what she’s doing.

The nasty comments full of jealousy and hatred hurled at Sarah Palin reveal just how much the liberal/socialist/communist/democrats fear her. So much for love, peace, and tolerance. They constantly show just how false, ostentatious, and petty they really are. This gives truth to the old saying that “It is better to keep one’s mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt”. Keep up the good work – Obama has dropped from a +10 to a -2 and your ratings are going in the same direction. The more you speak, the more people realize just how flawed your thinking really is.

I still can’t believe some of you wanted Palin as the VP of your beloved country, I still don’t get that, perhaps some of you will get your wish because Palin is definitely working on her campaign for 2012.That’t why she keeps popping up everywhere unfortunately.

Posted by: vanessa penney | July 1, 2009, 10:25 am 10:25 am

Us liberals keep picking on Palin, surely not because we fear her in the least, but it tends to elicit such anger from the republicans who still find her amusing, and think that she has any chance of ever being elected to a President or Vice Presidential role. The only fear us liberals have is the idea that we will have to look at her face for the next 8 years, her wanting to be something significant.

AS EMPEROR O’BABBLE’s “favorable” ratings continue to collapse, as more Americans recognize the Democrat-Communist Party as far too leftist, we can expect an increasing number of stories written by and for the loony left in an effort to distract us all from the disaster that is being foisted upon our country.

Jackie, I’m sure that that photo is more about the fancy jogging stroller than it is about the child. For women who jog with infants, all eyes will be on that stroller – it’s like the Cadillac of jogging strollers. I think the photo is designed to show off that stroller while illustrating that with the right stroller, even a grandmother with an infant of her own can still get out and enjoy a good run. It’s no more exploitation then when Obama puts his kids on ET for an interview.

Instead of all the negative comments on Palin, everyone should be encouraging the President to stop smoking, to actually eat some of the vegetables from the garden and take Palin up on her challenge.
from blackvoice website:
Racial disparities in men’s health exist across virtually all major chronic diseases. For example, in comparison to their white male counterparts, black men have a 40 percent higher incidence of type 2 diabetes and they are 20% more likely to die from heart disease. Black males ages 22-44 are 20 times more likely to develop kidney failure due to high blood pressure than are white males in the same age group. Black men also have the highest overall cancer incidence and mortality in the country and the highest rates of hypertension in the world.

Lets call Sarah Palin what she really is. A right wing religious zealot who would like to see the country take about 10 steps backwards regarding civil rights and freedoms of all Americans. I actually attended a rally for a local newspaper, when she was in my state and the racists, hateful comments being yelled the whole time she was speaking and the comments in the lines of those waiting to see her were very frightening. She knew these comments were being said, and never denounced them. She actually had her sick little smirck on her face the whole time. It made me realize how dangerous this woman really was and how divisive she would be if elected. Hence the incredible turn out for Obama was as much for him as president as it was to assure that Palin didn’t even come close to Washington, DC except to visit. These are the facts, and luckily Americans caught on very quickly. The only people still supporting her at this time are the ones who believe as she does. Combinded they are the sickest faction of American society, and include the rise in hate groups.

Wow! You Pumas really hate a woman that’s forty something and still hot after five children. Upstages all you people that just don’t care what they look like doesn’t she? She even has a brain and leadership skills. Give her some credit. She may not be presidential material, but the people of her state have had a good ride during her time as governor. This is in stark contrast to the state of Illinois where in spite of high taxes, gov’t. jobs are being cut right and left to come up with a realistic budget.

I’m a runner. Have done many races. I cringe to think of being associated with this women in any way. She’s pretty foolish to think she can beat Obama at a race, however. He is much taller and in fantastic shape, as anyone who plays any basketball knows, you run constantly during basketball, and it’s alot of sprinting, jogging, then sprinting, and if you’re a ‘slow’ runner like she is, she’d not do very well against a runner who also runs, Obama also runs, but his basketball is akin to sprint workouts you do before a race to get your speed up. IF she has no speed, maybe she doesn’t do these, which is fine, but fact is, if she races someone who does, she’ll lose. Yet another reason of how uninformed she is, and how foolish and attention seeking she is. With all the criticism she has gotton for being such a hairbrain, you’d wonder when she will put any thought behind her words before she speaks. And you know runners world will leap at anything that bring them sales, so some silly 40 something women who ‘runs’ like a turtle will certainly cell, even though she’s spewing racing a man who is in much better condition. they dont care if she’s acting like a fool, so long as it gets them attention and lookie here, it did! foolish women.

This is the same reason that left wing radio is never sucsessful. The majority of the country can’t stand to hear hate and vemenous stupidity on a constant basis. Ego ridden fanatics never win over calm and rational thought. Rush and hannity and o reilly = huge ratings and randi rhodes, al franken = bankruptsy. It’s the same idea on these pathetic blogs. Kill the hate and you might be able to stop things that you don’t like….like Mrs. Palin. Until then, just face it, America is fasinated with her. Sorry libs

Meanwhile, the “party of no” has presented NO ideas for rescuing the economy, NO ideas for fixing health care, NO ideas for producing a sustainable energy policy, and NO ideas for extricating the United States from the foreign policy messes of the Bush years. She could have settled the Letterman thing with one comment and move on but no she had to drag it out for many days. Now this comment to race. Who could take her seriously. She has so many cases pending against her in Alaska and is spending a lot of money to defend herself as the people there have the right to file charges on anyone and many have taken the liberty to do this against her. I don’t think she is the most popular governor anymore as she has been neglecting Alaska since the election. People there are getting tired of her. She talks about the pipeline and that has not been settled either. There is controversy over that also. She likes publicity….any kind and that is the truth.

I don’t think much of Palin as a politician or person, but why so much hate over a running article? She does know a little about the sport.
After all, it’s better than interviewing her about political ethics, keeping her knees together when she was a single woman while still being devout, or what Supreme Court decisions she she couldn’t remember but didn’t like.

Posted by: The_Mick | July 4, 2009, 10:30 am 10:30 am

I think why people get offended or put off by her in this interview is that most people would help promote running, and joke a little humour about themselves to show humbleness. She has used it to promote herself and try to slag the President. If I read an article from her about running, then share your thoughts on running, not how great you are.

Posted by: Brian | July 4, 2009, 1:25 pm 1:25 pm

Seeing ABC News on the 4th of July still reporting on Sarah Palin proves that they are obsessed with her. Why not talk about the Declaration of Independence or share some stories of our American forefathers that will inspire a patriotic love for our country? The major News are in fits over Sarah Palin. So much that they can’t let her go even while the rest of the country is celebrating a national holiday. The media obsession is tiring.
Obsessed in a hateful – let’s exploit our newscasting platform to attack those without our personal viewpoints – way. This, coupled with their aggrandizement of King Obama, ruler of what we can now call Amerizuela, is an obvious declaration of State-Run-Media in coordination with the new ruler.
Maybe our fireworks show will be State-Run too. Maybe we’ll see fireworks that spell out the words: “Why did Sarah Palin Quit?” Then the grand finale can be: “Democrat Party is Lord and God”.

This is the silliest article on a “political figure” I have ever seen. How can anyone take this dimwitted self-promoter seriously at any level? Hope she keeps cashing in, because the novelty of this ridiculous public spectacle WILL wear off. Is this how sh’e going to be a “friend” and a “force” for the GOP? I’m embarassed FOR her. and I’m one of those evil socialists.

What a self-promoter! Coming up Next: a slew of “exclusive” interviews promoting her book; her own TV talk show; commentator for Fox…The shrinking thinking portion of the GOP must be cringing. I’m embarassed FOR them, and I’m an evil socialist. Cash in while you can, Sarah; the novelty of this ridiculous public spectacle won’t last forever.

My gradma taught me to be a straight shooter: Mrs. P is a self-promoter who loves the spotlight (when there’s no responsibility attached). She’s the Paris Hilton of the GOP. Next to come: “exclusive interviews”, a book tour, TX commentator on Fox, her own talk show…watch. You don’t have to defend her; she’s laughing all the way to the bank. This evil socialist is lovin’ it…

A female Dan Quayle. Cash in your 15 minutes, ’cause you ain’t never goin’ to the White House except as a tourist.
No, liberals don’t “hate” her (too strong a word for a lightweight), they just think she’s a JOKE. And she keeps on provin’ it.

Palin will run as an independant and win. She is the change this country needs. She is for everything this country stands for. God Bless Her and Protect Her.

Palin is out of her mind! I am from Anchorage AK. Very HAPPY that she quit and hopefully is about to be old news. Judgeing by her resume; the republicans picked her b/c she a female…any body else would have been laughed at with all her dilemmas and family/past history. The damage is done here in AK now that her skeletons are out of the closet. What ever you do now Palin….good luck!

Thank God for Gov Palin..an honest Christian who tries to live a “normal life” while serving “God and Country.”

It is importatn that we all step back..instead of reacting..but step back…then pray for our leaders. Jeremiah 33:3 is the key to effective prayer..one day..each of us wil give an account before King Jesus. Have you asked HIM to be YOUR Lord, God and Savior? If so, that makes Sarah Palin your sister and Christ…pray for her! Don’t be guilty of sitting in the “seat of the scorful.” STOP and read again, Matthew 18:15-18…and remember that GOSSIP is one of the most “deadly sins of all (Proverbs 6)..so read Matthew 18:15-18 concerning “people problems” and remember Believers..”obedience is better than sacrifice.” Jesus Chist si son Coming..and IS King of all Kings…and EVERY knee will bow to Him! (Revelation 20:10-15) :)
