Pelosi Praising China?

ABC News' Kristina Wong reports: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi praised the Chinese government today, in a noticeable departure from her longtime criticism of the Communist regime's human rights practices.

"They are on the move, and doing many things right," she said, at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., where she spoke of her recent trip to China to meet face-to-face with Premier Wen Jiabao, President Hu Jintao and the National People's Congress Chairman Wu Bangguo. She said the primary topic of discussion was climate change and energy.

Pelosi praised the Chinese government's steps towards cleaner air in China, including implementing a high speed rail train, and closing down inefficient coal plants.

"The U.S. and China are the biggest emitters of greenhouse gases," she said, striking a tone of cooperation ahead of difficult international negotiations on climate change to take place later this year in
Copenhagen.

As the world's largest net emitter of greenhouse gases, China's leaders argue the country cannot limit its emissions while it is still undergoing industrial development, and say the U.S. faced no such limitation as it was developing.

"We're in this together; we share this planet," Pelosi said.

Pelosi dismissed news reports suggesting she downplayed the issue of human rights in her meetings with China's leaders, pointing out she was currently wearing a pin given to her by anti-Chinese government protestors in Hong Kong.

"It's not so much my view has changed, but my role has changed," she said, recalling how in 1991, she had unfurled a banner of protest in Tiananmen Square and was chased away by police. Now, as Speaker of the House, she could "express her views directly" to the Chinese leadership.

"We were very frank about human rights," she said.

Pelosi said the two sides also discussed North Korea's recent nuclear test and missile launches. She said the Chinese leaders conveyed the impression that they had "some ability but not unlimited" to coax the North back to the Six-Party Talks over North Korea's disarmament.

"They did not want full responsibility for bringing them back to the table," she said.

Pelosi joked that around this time last year, she was the "most hated person in China," for meeting with exiled Tibetan leader and human rights advocate, the Dalai Lama. But this year, she said she was
received with an "incredible show of hospitality."

Thomas Mann, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, said that China's warm welcome of Speaker Pelosi reflects several factors – "recognition that Pelosi is a powerful Speaker of a very consequential
legislative body; while the two countries have different interests, their economic and environmental fates are inextricably linked; and a belief that dealings with President Obama will be strengthened with
good relations with the Democratic Speaker."

Pelosi said that relations between President Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao were positive, and that they have established a "good rapport."

"We are economic competitors," Pelosi said firmly, but added, "I have to be an optimist. I could argue both ways, but I choose to look at it from a positive perspective."

China is a great place for Pelosi. She should consider moving there. I hope she wasn’t “misled” in the meeting. Wait a while and she’ll reverse course.

Charlie C –Or maybe they will do a full investigation of all involved. Won’t Bush and Cheney love that! Who is more guilty, those who knew or those who ordered! Be careful what you wish for!

Interesting comparisons(part 1 & 2):
1> 20 years ago, a few powerful people in the Chinese government ordered army to crush peaceful demonstrations by millions ordinary citizens. At least hundreds were brutally killed. Today, the Chinese government still refuses to let the world know the death toll. No one has been punished for the massacre.
6 years ago, a few powerful people in the US government used made-up ‘facts’ to invade Iraq that has nothing to do with the 9.11. Thousands of Americans and perhaps much more Iraqis have lost their lives. Today, the US government still refuses to reveal the death toll of Iraqis. No one has been punished for starting the unjustified war.
2> The government controlled schools don’t tell students the truth of 6.4. Today, young Chinese know little about what happened in Beijing 20 years ago.
Many people and some schools in the US want to stop teaching evolution. They only want kids to believe the Earth is a few thousand years old and everything was created by a single God.

3> The economy in China is booming. Many become very rich by bribing officials so that the government ignores hundreds of death each year in illegal mines, thousands of under age workers in sweat-shops, and unwanted ingredients in foods for profit. Crooks and corrupted officials are enjoying piling cash at their homes. Very few are held responsible for these crimes.
The housing market in the US was booming and the country was occupied by wars and terrorists. Many corporate executives and crooks on the Wall street became very rich by inflating the market with derivatives, selling mortgages to those who couldn’t afford, back-dating their stock options, hiding their profits in off-shore banks, awarding themselves with taxpayers’ bail-out money, etc, etc. The looting finally caused the US and world financial systems to collapse, leaving many financially responsible law-abiding citizens to suffer the consequences. Very few crooks are held responsible for their actions.

Interesting comparisons(part 4):
4> After 6.4, many reporters and citizens in China have been beaten or put into jail, some even lost their lives for telling the truth of 6.4 or for revealing illegal activities by corrupted government officials. Their websites have been shut down. They have been silenced.
After 9.11, the media and some journalists in the US censored themselves because they didn’t want to be labeled as unpatriotic. One guy who did speak out the truth and his family member’s CIA identity was leaked to public. A federal grand jury indicted and convicted a White House official on related charges in the following investigation but the President took the jury conviction as a joke and ordered the convicted felony to be released on the same day…

Try the truth,
They wont do a full investigation because both sides were equally concerned about our safety back then. Pelosi isnt guilty, she should be praised for putting our concerns and our safety at the forefront. That no longer seems important to the left.

If we have our reasons for Guantanamo Bay prisons, China has its own reasons for handling June 4th aftermath. If we think we can handle China’s internal affairs better than they can, then perhaps we should allow the notion that China can handle our internal affairs better than we can…
The freedom and human rights we are demonstrating to the world is the might of guns and the disregard of foreign sovereignty and international law in the recent affairs in Iraq and Afghanistan, all of which Pelosi has played an important part as Speaker of the House.
One can not defend human rights on the one hand and violate human rights on the other all at the same time all with equal oratorical passion.
So how does one make of Pelosi? Simple, she’s my sweetheart and bitch all at the same time.
