PETA Says No More Fly-Killing, Sends Obama a Humane Fly Catcher

ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports:

PETA has a few words for President Obama: Brush, don’t kill.

After the President very publically swatted and then killed a fly during an interview with CNBC yesterday, the outspoken animal rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) said they wished Obama had served a better example.

“We support compassion for the even the smallest animals," says Bruce Friedrich, VP for Policy at PETA. “We support giving insects the benefit of the doubt."

Friedrich says PETA supports "brushing flies away rather than killing them" and was disappointed that the President had gone ahead and squashed the pesky fly.

This afternoon PETA sent a Katcha Bug, a device which traps bugs and allows their safe release back into nature to the White House.

PETA hopes the President will use the catcher but has no far not received communication back from the White House, although they did not ask for specific correspondence.

Friedrich admits that despite his fly-swatting ways, the President has been a champion for animal rights in the past. PETA claims to be pleased by Obama’s denouncement of factory farming, Canadian seal hunting andMichelle Obama’s stance against wearing fur.

PETA is nuts. I know they will do anything for attention, but really? They are nuts. And I LOVE animals (have volunteered for the local humane society for over a decade).

If we stop noticing them, they will go away. They seek publicity, and that’s what they get.

haha this was so predictable. You know all those cooks voted for him too.
I am an animal lover as well and I wish PETA would spend the majority of their resources helping shelters instead of dressing up people in cow costumes and scaring little kids drinking milk.

Are these people for real? What a bunch of worthless head cases with nothing better to do then to bother the president for killing a fly! I have an idea, send all the flies, rats, roaches, and lice over to the homes of every PETA member and see how fast they call an exterminator murder the poor helpless pest.

Despite having voted for Ron Paul, I think I have to go with the President on this one. Too much ado over a fly.
It’s strange, but shouldn’t there be an organization called “People for the Ethical treatment of baby humans?”
When we live in a society where flies have rights, and unborn children do not, it makes you realize just how far off-base we are.

Seriously? We have far more important issues on our plates than someone swatting and killing a fly.

The PETA folks are laughing about the response to their comment. Too bad it’s not April 1st, it reminds me of the outrage that ensued on that date several years ago when Taco Bell issued a press release that the Liberty Bell had been renamed the Taco Liberty Bell. Cue outrage and #%@! them if they can’t take a joke.

Our president is killing flies! I’m sure this is a precursor to more serious actions. You don’t suppose he would actually authorize mouse traps?
Those PETA people need to find another way to keep busy.

It is my hope that Obama one day finds the courage to throw PETA in insane asylums like the crazies that they are.
I’ll treat some animals ethically. With ketchup, steak sauce, and worcestershire!
And by the way, PETA fanatics, I’m eating meat right now!

However insignificant another creature’s life may seem to us, it is still that: life. Complex and beautiful life. I think PETA’s point here is that we should try to understand this instead of flippantly disposing of life because it suits our convenience, and because we believe our species is the pinnacle of creation.

PETA- Get a life, Grow up.
The life span of a fly is 15-30 days. They carry a TON of nasty disease, spread germs etc.
I can bet anyone of you at PETA have killed a ton of flies in you life.
Stop wasting time on you crap.
I guess you don’t even know what your job is.
I found this on YOUR website….and it says NOTHING of flies.
“PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: on factory farms, in laboratories, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of beavers, birds and other “pests,” and the abuse of backyard dogs.”
You have to much time on your hands if you want to save flies. Get a life

Posted by: Rob | June 18, 2009, 12:47 am 12:47 am

This is the most ridiculous thing that has come out of PETA yet! How much worse is it going to get? A fly is NOT an animal! Oh, and by the way, my fly swatter took care of at least 50 flies today. How on earth did those things get in my house? When they’re outside, the birds and reptiles eat them. If they make it in my house, I’ll swat them. Forget brushing them aside–then they’ll just go make more flies and contaminate my food!

Posted by: sharingmine | June 18, 2009, 12:47 am 12:47 am

Is this a joke?
I don’t like flies they are very dirty
creatures. What do we do now give them
a home and let them roam.

PETA has a few words for President Obama: Brush, don’t kill. “We support compassion for the even the smallest animals,” says Bruce Friedrich, VP for Policy at PETA. “We support giving insects the benefit of the doubt.”
Too bad PETA doesn’t have the same compassionate message regarding the smallest humans- unborn children in the womb, being torn apart at a rate of 4,000 times a day!

Posted by: SaveTheFlies! | June 18, 2009, 12:54 am 12:54 am

Sometimes I agree with PETA, but this is just absurd. In the circle of life, the flies get swatted.
That being said, I am astonished by how many people don’t realize that insects ARE animals. For anyone who paid any attention in middle school science, you should know that in the Classification of Living Things, you first break them into Kingdoms. People used to say “Animal, Vegetable, Mineral”, but today the more accurate 5 terms are Animal, Plant, Bacteria, Fungus & Protozoa. Insects fall in the Animal Kingdom. Come on, people, prove you are smarter than a 5th Grader.

Posted by: Patrick in IL | June 18, 2009, 1:31 am 1:31 am

I support PETA..but I wish they would take the opportunity to not berate someone on the insect issue. People are not going to be 100% kill free on this issue. When insects invade your space whether home or office…we have to make choices to draw the line. The Obamas do more on animal rights awareness than any previous presidential family. So, at this point PETA should really have let it go. We need to take it a step at a time. Let’s work on getting animals in factories under stricter protections and better execution techniques and with dignity. Let’s work on fighting the cruelty of extended pain and suffering! That is where the injustice lies!

Dear PETA,
It’s a FREEKIN’ FLY!!!!!!! They only live a week anyway and there will be 5,000,000,000,000 more to take it’s place. And here I thought your low point was “sea kittens”. If you’re really that bored you might consider trying to find homes for more of the cats and dogs in your shelters, instead of euthanizing 90% of them. I would think that would be a better way to utilize all that donation money than heckling people about insects. Please go away, you are not making the world a better place.

PETA is a joke. All this for a fly? Give me a break! It’s an annoying insect, and killing one will not make them become extinct.
Same with rats, for they are vermon. I remember a story here in New Jersey where an old man killed a rat that was in his garden, and the local PETA division made the police fine the old man for cruelty to animals. Guess what? The next day, that PETA branch gotten dozens of dead rats on their doorstep. This shows how stupid PETA are. I’m sure the charges were dropped, given the old man was killing a vermon animal that spreads disease, etc.

PETA – you’ve gone too far with this insect killing. Limit your list to non-insect animals. Flies are nasty, disease carrying, irritating insects along with mosquitoes, gnats, etc. I’m sure even PETA people have swatted and swiped at these pesky insects at one time in their lives. You’ve gone way overboard with this Obama swatting thing.

I shouldn’t say that…comparing then to PETA would be an insult to those with that affliction…

Jman-I was wondering when someone would bring up a subject, like abortion, that has NOTHING to do with the story!!! How on earth do you come up with that by reading a story about a fly??? Stick to the story and stop telling people what their priorities should be! By the way, PETA sucks and they are just a joke who don’t give a da## about animals! Keep up the good work PETA, you are really making it harder for people to take you seriously! Instead of bit### about the fly why aren’t you doing anything to help those dogs who are being killed by being clubbed and stoned to death in China right now? That is why I stick with reputable and REAL animal organizations and least they care about animals not just only about money and making a fool about themselves!

Posted by: Rob | June 18, 2009, 9:54 am 9:54 am

PETA is nothing but a money hungry outfit who preys on people who care about animals. It doesn’t offer shelter to homeless animals. In June of 2005, PETA offered to take a few dogs from an animal shelter and rehome them. Then someone saw the PETA employees who picked up the dogs euthanize them in the back of their van and throw the carcasses in a trash bin.
PETA kills animals:

PETA had to say something, or they would lose some credibility actually. I’m sure they are not feeling as strongly about it, as you can tell from the laid-back approach of the article. PETA was obligated to say something, so they made a small remark, much unlike their tirades when they usually have a problem.

PETA has publically stated that animals would be better off dead than pets, as evidenced by their high euthanasia record documented by the state of Virginia. Considering how crazy Ingrid Newkirk is, I dont doubt that PETA is very serious about the fly issue. Perhaps they should consider the amount of pesticides required to provide them with the food that they consume. Or perhaps consider the last time a PETA representative came down with malaria.

Next we will see PETA complaining about people washing their hands. After all, you kill millions of bacteria every time you soap up. You are actually partially destroying an entire ecosystem (your body) every time you wash, so I am surprised that some extreme left-wing ecoterrorist organization hasn’t tried to outlaw showering.

Brooklynish: “Much worse is that nearly all of them rely on fleeting cultural norms rather than logic and reason.”
…it is you who are relying on fleeting cultural norms. The norm I rely on in advocating the use of animals in food, industry, and scientific research is that of the survival and prosperity of my own species, especially my family and friends. It’s only in the last few decades, DUE to the progress of science, technology, and industry that people like PETA have the LUXURY of pretending that animals have rights. But you cannot hold back progress– if PETA succeeds in the politically correct countries, the technological slack will be taken up by countries that don’t give a damn about PETA and other liberal nonsense. Unfortunately those countries also don’t give a damn about human rights or about the environment either… the dominance of countries like China would be PETA’s legacy.
Luckily, enough people aren’t vegan hipster whiners that PETA will never push through its full agenda, notwithstanding the damage it has done to science and medicine.

F1r3br4nd,
In your response, you’ve assumed too much, haven’t explained very much, and misunderstood and/or misused language that we should all be able to agree on.
My standard of proper consideration of others’ interests (and in the case of the tortured creatures that become the average meat-eater’s dinner, vital interests) is difficult to challenge because it has a respect for facts and reality, as best as those can be determined (e.g., others exist and have interests.) I have no problem with humans being occasional meat-eaters in a context that demands the practice for survival, but that context is certainly not now for the overwhelming majority of people, nor has it been lately. People have thrived as vegetarians for thousands of years (see Indian history in particular), pre-civilizational hunter-gatherers ate very little meat but were physically robust enough to survive harsher conditions than most of their descendants face today, and human anatomy strongly suggests a near-entirely vegetarian evolution. (continued…)

Posted by: Brooklynish | June 18, 2009, 1:51 pm 1:51 pm

So you see how my standard is situated apart from mainstream cultural behavior and can be applied with nuance across cultural realities. And you hopefully also see how dependent your behavior is doing what most others do at a particular moment in history.
Your proclaimed standard is self-interest, which defies all systems of ethics except for those created to easily rationalize fundamentally unfair behavior (e.g., stealing non-renewable resources on a massive scale for a particular set of people). It’s just amoral relativism.
Please explain what you mean by rights; given your statement about some people “pretending that animals have rights”, I don’t think you have a clear idea. If you mean rights to be privileges afforded by a state, then you misunderstand PETA’s mission, which is partially to fight for greater rights for non-human animals. If you mean rights to be ‘inalienable qualities’ inherent to a being based on his/her physical attributes — such as the ability to feel pain via a central nervous system, etc. — then you clearly misunderstand the physical realities of animal life and should look more into the scientific progress of which you speak.
You are also mixing up practical concerns with ideological and ontological ones, not to mention throwing around words and labels with reckless abandon. It’s a muddy, uninformed, and disingenuous argument, and shouldn’t be accepted.

Posted by: Brooklynish | June 18, 2009, 1:51 pm 1:51 pm

“OK… little people with little minds…”
You had me at “Hello”.
Much like most liberal groups, PETA is a good idea gone amuck and devoid of common sense.

Gibbs: “PETA is led by people who have a brain whose size is comparable to that of a fly, if they have any brain at all!”
That’s probably due to the lack of meat in their diet. After all, it was the meat that allowed our ancestors to evolve intelligently.

Posted by: j | June 18, 2009, 2:48 pm 2:48 pm

Posted by: Ben | June 18, 2009, 3:09 pm 3:09 pm

What next… should I release into the wild ticks I find on my dog?
PETA has to be able to see the difference in harmful bugs, like flys, mosquitos and ticks that carry disease, and helpful ones like ladybugs(they eat tons of harmful bugs like aphids) or dragonflies (they eat lots of mosquitos).
Stories like this might get PETA into the news but put them into the ‘silly’ organization category. So folks won’t take their warnings as seriously in the future.

We should pass a bill for the gov to supply humane fly catchers for everyone, build a giant rehabilitation center in America for terrorists and foriegn dictators, another fund to house feed and clothe every poor person in America (including illegals), fund research for ways to remove bacteria and pests in our homes without endangering them, provide one bicycle for every car in America… There’s just TOO MUCH TO DO!

I propose creating a new organization called PETO, People for the Ethical Treatment of Organisms. Every living creature whether animal, insect, plant, or germ deserves to live. Stop the hate! Killer bees, fleas, leeches, gnats, flies, and mosquitos need love too! Reduce speed limits to a max of 2 mph so bugs have a chance. Don’t forget salmonella. Ban Lysol! And halitosis germs they are attacked relentlessly, poor fellas. No toothbrushing! Learn to live with athlete’s foot so the fungi can live too!

Flies spread disease. When they feed, flies vomit up the contents of their little stomachs, let the juices break down their upcoming meal, and then suck back the puddle, leaving a little bit behind.
Flies like to feed on feces. Do you PETA people like to ingest little bacteria-laced puddle reminants after your precious flies get their share?

I’m a vegetarian. I sympathize with ALL animals that have nervous systems which make them feel pain & pleasure. But I read that such systems in insects are much less comlicated and those in other animals, and we are NOT sure yet how much pain and pleasure these creautres feel. So, because of this UNCERTAINTY and lack of data about insects’ feeling, I choose NOT to kill or torture an animal or a bug except when I have to. I never kill them for fun, as some do. And even when I have to kill a fly, I do it like the presient did: kill it immadiately. If some people find this funny, just remember that we don’t KNOW much about these animals’ feelings. Period.

Posted by: caillyn | June 18, 2009, 11:36 pm 11:36 pm

I normally prefer to argue issues, not ridicule people or organizations, but I’ll make an exception in this case.
PETA’s ludicrous publicity-seeking reminds me of a two-liner from my youth.
The first line, paraphrased, is:
“PETA are like flies.”
The second line is impolite, so I’ll not include it. Cognoscenti will be able to complete the insult.
P.S. I don’t like roaches, or flies, and I will go out of my way to kill them. I don’t care if they “hurt” in the process, and I certainly don’t care what PETA thinks about it.

Posted by: Allen | June 18, 2009, 11:55 pm 11:55 pm

I can never take an Organization like Peta serious when they kill dogs and cats. When they consider animal life more important than human life. Also, don’t they realize that to grow vegetables it takes land. Land that will displace any animal living on that land. So in their logic they are harming animals. Vegetables don’t show up magically in a supermarket or grocery stand.

Posted by: ER | June 18, 2009, 11:56 pm 11:56 pm

Look people, it is not PETA’s goal to worry about a fly as it is to generate publicity. Why do these stories get published? Seriously ABC and ALL others; ignore them and they WILL go away.

Posted by: die or fight | June 19, 2009, 1:54 am 1:54 am

PETA didn’t condemn President Obama for acting on instinct. When the media began contacting PETA in droves for a statement, PETA obliged, simply by saying that the president isn’t the Buddha and shouldn’t be expected to do everything right—if not for that, PETA would not have brought it up. It’s the media who are making a big deal about the fly swat, not PETA! We can’t stop all suffering, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t stop any.

PETA stop being ridiculous. By condoning the president for killing a disease carrying pest, you are alienating the American public and undoing any positive impact or effect you may have in the future. It is time to examine your extreme positions and weigh the cost-benefit of holding views so far from the public. Time to do a reality check. Are you to travel to developing countries and provide these fly catchers to all of the communities plagued by diseases carried by flies? Time to do a reality check, stop alienating the American public, and determine how to effectively educate and advocate about animal cruelty. Your efforts will not be effective while trying to force others to bear these proliferous pests.

Everyone says “it’s just a fly” How many of you also say, it’s just a fetus. It’s just a baby, it’s just your dog, it’s just your cat. What gives us the right to devalue any life at all on this planet. Why does any human feel that they are entitled to choose to take the life of any living creature? Should we begin to slaughter people that are handicapped as well? I think we really have to look at what our society is creating by living each day nonchalantly with many of our actions supporting animal cruelty, drastic pollution, and adversely affecting our health. The lack of wisdom in the responses to this post serve as an excellent example in outlining the stupidity amongst the human race.
So often people talk about humans being no more than animals, yet no animal in the world is as stupid as the human when it comes to dealing with annoyances such as insects.
It’s not just about the barbaric and inhumane methods of practice that people apply to these situations, but it’s also about the level of intelligence of human over insect.
If you are wise, you understand that the journey of life (in all but your own) is not yours to control, and if you feel any differently it is only confirming your vanity, stupidity and ignorance.
If you would kill a fly because it is an annoyance, then why not also kill thugs and hooligans, who are a much larger problem to our society.
NB. I won’t respond to follow-ups.
