Sarah Palin Calls for Uprising Against Letterman for Joke About Her Daughter

ABC News' David Chalian reports:  Gov. Sarah Palin called on the public to rise up in opposition to David Letterman's distasteful jokes about her daughter this week.  In a morning television interview on NBC's "Today" show, Gov. Palin described her controversy with the late night comedian as a "sad commentary on where we are as a culture, as a society, to chuckle and laugh through comments such as he had made the other night, I think is quite unfortunate."

WATCH: Palin Vs. Letterman Mr. Letterman's explanation that he was referring to her 18 year old daughter, Bristol, instead of her 14 year old daughter, Willow, who accompanied her recently to New York was met with derision by Gov. Palin.  She called it a "very convenient excuse" that took him a couple of days to present."It was a degrading comment about a young woman.  I would hope that people really start rising up and deciding it's not acceptable.  No wonder young girls especially have such low self esteem in America when we think it's funny for a so-called comedian to get away with being able to make such a remark as he did and to think that that's acceptable," Palin said.Gov. Palin was apparently pleased to see women organizations speaking out against the comments and then proceeded to read from her BlackBerry an email she received from someone she described as not a typical feminist.  "Every male organization. . . should rise up and shout in defense of their daughters, their sisters, their mothers," Palin read to NBC's Matt Lauer. When Lauer pressed Palin on her spokeswoman's response stating "it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman," Palin said that was not in bad taste."I connect the dots to a degrading statement made about young women and that does contribute to some acceptance of  abuse of young women," Palin said in defense of that statement before going on to explain that it can be interpreted in many ways."Take it however you want to take it.  It is a comment that came from the heart that Willow, no doubt, would want to stay away after he made such a comment," she said.Gov. Palin also decried what she sees as a double standard being applied to her and her family both politically and in a broader social sense."First, remember in the campaign, Barack Obama said, 'Family's off limits.  You don't talk about my family.'"   "And the candidate who must be obeyed,  everybody adhered to that and they did leave his family alone.  They haven't done that on the other side of the ticket and it has continued to this day so that's a political double standard."Gov. Palin went on to describe a second double standard as the "acceptance of a celebrity being able to get away with a disparaging comment that does erode a young girl's self esteem and does contribute to some of the problems we have in society."Asked if Letterman owes her an apology, Gov. Palin said no."He doesn't have to apologize to me.  I would like to see him apologize to young women across the country for contributing to that thread that is throughout our culture that makes it sound like it's ok to talk about young girls that way."

Gov. Palin, stop it! I was with you on this. I heard the joke, never thought it was about Willow, but still in bad taste. You and your husband took this to a level it didn’t need to go to. Child rape? Calling Dave perverted? This is your moment to stay in the spotlight. I got it! During the campaign, Pres. Obama never said a word about your kids or family. I never heard anyone ATTACK your children. They asked questions about Bristol’s plans, but you turned that into “they attacked”. Some of the fringe said your youngest was Bristols, ok not true or fair. Also saw on Faux news sites that the Obama girls weren’t Pres. Obama’s and that was BEFORE you entered the race. Your family hasn’t been through any worse than any of the other families at that time. The difference is YOU USE IT TO STAY IN THE NEWS! To play the victim. Letterman made a joke that was in bad taste. He wasn’t talking about your 14 year old. Now move on, or is it too great a press opportunity for you to pass up!

He is an entertainer. Just like we won’t hold Palin responsible for all of the racist rants and hateful rhetoric spewed by her and her followers on a daily basis, which I find much more offensive and dangerous, than any late night talk show hosts joke about the dysfunctional family. He is an entertainer. She is a political figurehead. One wants to increase or improve his ratings. The other wants to rule and change the country to an extreme that diminishes us as a nation, just by the hatred she evokes.

Right now, the only one who is abusing their daughter are the Palins.
Keep the controversy going, Todd and Sarah. One way to keep your name in the news media. Too bad your comments make as much sense as usual – none.
Talk about low class

Letterman thinks he can say and do what ever he wants. Palin has a perfect right to take him on. He has been doing things like this for years. But I bet if he said one little off the wall thing about OB kids the news would be after him. this just shows where we are in country.
Fire him and the problem is fixed for a while.

If Gov. Palin would stop shoving her family into the public eye, there would be no “jokes” about them on TV. The election was over seven months ago. Why are these people still in the news anyway?

If the jerk talked trash about my daughter I would keep it up until he regretted saying it.
Letterman is an idiot. He needs to check his political hate at the door and be funny.

Give me a break.
Palin didn’t have a problem with McCain’s Chelsea Clinton viciousness. She, and the rest of you Republicans, thought he should be our president.
What a bunch of no-good loser hypocrites.

Posted by: Troutman | June 12, 2009, 8:45 am 8:45 am

How great to be a Republican.
Defend a murderer who assassinates a doctor.
Defend a lunatic who is on “a mission” to kill our president.
Defend an anti-Semite who guns down a black guard.
And then get bent out of shape over a bad joke because you are so “sensitive”.

Typical; dems are jumping in Letterman’s camp just because Palin has an (R) next to her name. Democrats are nothing but huge hypocrites. Letterman called her a slut and insulted her teenage daughter and dems want HER to shut up? Wow, the nerve of you democrats! Go crawl under a rock and don’t come out until you have learned respect for women.

Palin is obviously very thin-skinned. The only time we hear about her anymore is when she’s having a spat with someone. Would love to see the Republicans nominate her to go up against Obama. She’d lose horribly.

Posted by: Eric | June 12, 2009, 8:53 am 8:53 am

I find it ironic that she spouts her disaproval of big government, but she sees censorship as her duty. It dosen’t matter what Letterman said, or anyone else. Freedom of speech. If you find his show, his words, or him offensive, turn off the TV. Quit talking about it and move on. You are in charge of your children, their self esteem, and their moral teachings. Not the public. And if you truly cared about your children, you would have a private discusion about what was said and what happened and leave the public out of it. I don’t need your censorship skills. As my parents gave me the skills to disagree and move on.It’s called reality.

Wait, doesn’t Alaska have one of the highest rape rates in the United States? Seems like she should spend less time bitching about Letterman and do something to fix the problem in her own state.
When your state’s rape rate is over two times higher than the national average, that is an insult to women, in that they cannot feel safe.

I agree with ‘Trythetruth.’ She’s just using this to stay in the news. Her children are constanly in the media because she put them out there. And ‘Chuck’ is dead on. All the hate speech she did on the campaign trail well a hell of alot more offensive than some joke that in her opinion went to far!!

Palin is a control freak. Control the press, control gays, control women, control anyone who doesn’t think within her sick little right wing box. Sounds like the the extremists have found their new leader. Forget drill, drill, drill. More like kill, kill, kill. What a lovely bunch of coconuts we have in this country.

I am beginning to realise this woman is jealous of Barack Obama. There is nothing in this story that warrants comparism to Barack Obama. I sincerely hope she is not a racist with all those nasty comments she made when she was campaigning. I am also beginning to think she meant them and It was not just Politics.

Posted by: vuzous | June 12, 2009, 9:05 am 9:05 am

It does not matter if the extreme left defend Letterman. It was in poor taste and he has definitely lost a viewer here. You know the old saying..a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step..one viewer here, one viewer there and the next thing you know, then the majority quits watching and he is left with the left wing nuts. I have always considered myself a moderate, middle of the road person but I totally disagree that it is okay to take potshots at a kid for the sake of a laugh.

Posted by: Linda | June 12, 2009, 9:06 am 9:06 am

I am a woman with a teenage daughter and I don’t want an apology from Letterman. So Palin don’t speak for me when you say Letterman owes all of us an apology. Anyone with half a brain (which excludes Palin) knows this was a joke. The best thing Palin can do is go back to Alaska and stopy bringing your insanity to the lower 48. We don’t need it! Stay home where you are “loved” becasue its obvious the rest of the county doesn’t love you since you cost McCain the election.

*sigh* Someone shut her up. She can’t grasp that her fifteen minutes are over. Letterman is a comedian, he’s been on the air more than two decades and has no history of degrading women. Palin is only a concerned parent when in the public eye. Alaskans have figured her out and she knows she won’t be re-elected so she’s desperately trying to keep her name on the national stage. She’s an idiot.

Angie – Actually the pictures were in the paper and on the news. I thought it was Bristol also. Sorry, the kids look alike! I found the joke to be in poor taste also, but all this vitriol when everyday Rush says things that are far worse, racist and sexist. When Gov. Palin inflamed crowds to the point they yelled “kill him” and nothing was said. It’s hypocritical. She and her husband took this fight to a level it shouldn’t have gone to if they are really that concerned about their daughter! Letterman crossed a line, but his joke is was not nearly as bad as they are blowing it up to be. This is Gov. Palin’s way of staying in the news!

Roberts Said: “Letterman thinks he can say and do what ever he wants. Palin has a perfect right to take him on. He has been doing things like this for years. But I bet if he said one little off the wall thing about OB kids the news would be after him. this just shows where we are in country. Fire him and the problem is fixed for a while.”
================================
I say: Roberts…. (A) just turn on Fox News and see how much is spewed about the Obamas. The fact is, if you’re in the public eye, this is going to happen (just ask the UK Royal family) (B) Palin is using this as a publicity stunt (proof: Letterman never mentioned Willow, she did). (C) Everyone knows that Letterman was referring to Bristol Plain, the young lady who, “Yes in deed”, did have a teenage pregnancy. If Sarah Palin didn’t want this kind of controversy, maybe she should have been spending more time teaching her own daughter about what is right and wrong, versus spewing her right-wing rhetoric and attacking others for their patriotism. Bottom Line Robert… If she can’t handle the heat then she needs to stay out of the kitchen.

vtb3 you are WRONG. It’s the Republican smear machine that has caused a deep divid in this county. Rove said to win the nation must stay divided and they stopped at nothing to keep control for 8 years. Not to mention Hannity and Limbaugh’s hatred of anyone who is not a Conservative. So when making assessments of division in this country you need put the blame where it belongs. Oh and lets not forget Palins hate filled rallies last fall when people where shouting kill him and she did absolutely nothing to curtail the hatred. I have no compassion for a person or party who mitigates such hate.

Posted by: casturn68 | June 12, 2009, 9:39 am 9:39 am

Gov. Palin has the brain the size of a pea. At the outset of the 2008 campaign she should have declined McCain’s offer to be his running mate. She was never qualified to be President; it’s just that simple. Could you imagine what shape this country would be in now if she were President? McCain is an old man with a history of cancer. By selecting Palin he too showed he was also unqualified for the office.
The Republican party is now controlled by a bunch of old right wing white nuts. Palin should spend less time in public and more time learning about the REAL world. She and her entire family are truly pathetic. Get a life!!!!

Posted by: cjacob500 | June 12, 2009, 9:39 am 9:39 am

Hey, Try the Truth. I challenge you to quote one racist comment that you claim Sarah Palin said. Remember you are allowed your own opinion, but not your own facts. Your name is contradictory.
I have read many different blogs concerning Sarah Palin in recent days. It is unbelievable the hate and vitriol that is spewed against Governor Palin and all of her children. Some of the comments are too obscene and depraved to repeat here. Why the viciousness? Even if an individual disagrees with Palin’s politics, why would they attack her and her children? Normal people do not have this kind of hatred for anyone they didn’t vote for. She has never harmed anyone. Politicians can take care of themselves, but their children, no matter what their age, should be off limits to crude jokes. If it isn’t OK to make jokes about Obama’s children, it is not OK to insult other politician’s children. Period.

Posted by: bjssassy | June 12, 2009, 9:41 am 9:41 am

This is so sad…I agree with Gov Palin, it sounds like a convenient excuse to say he was speaking of the older daughter.
Even if he was, that makes this excusable?
Because she is 18 and has a child? Why do we women allow this? We need to start sticking up for all women, not just the ones we agree with politically.. Where are the women’s groups? Shame on them and shame on Lauer for pressing Gov Palin on a comment her spokesperson said. This is about what Letterman said and that is where the focus needs to remain.

Posted by: LMA | June 12, 2009, 9:43 am 9:43 am

Kathie,
you must not have any kids to make such comments. When someone says something as offensive and disgusting, and yes, perverted, as Lettermen did, your instinct is to defend and you naturally feel outraged! Get over your political hatred for her and look at this as an old man suggesting a young woman, 14 or 18, being raped by aggressive politicians & athletes. This suggest women are nothing but objects for men.

I don’t recall her shoving her family in the spot light since the election. Wasn’t she in New York because she was invited to a Republican fundraiser. How did that spotlight her family. Think what you want of the lady. Letterman was wrong and should be glad that Todd hasn’t knocked his teeth down his throat. If was my daughter I would not care of he was talking about the 18yr old or the 14yr old.

You have GOT to be kidding…
Palin’s responsible for allowing the brutal killing of thousands of wolves in Alaska, yet she’s too sensitive for jokes about her daughter(s)? I think she feels guilty about the values she obviously DIDN’T instill in her daughters (thank you Bristol), and this is her attempt to put a bandaid on her (& Todd’s) poor parenting skills.

“The candidate who must be obeyed”? Sounds like somebody is still a big sore loser. She didn’t bother to call for an uprising when she was campaigning and people in the audience were yelling “kill him” about Obama. I guess that’s OK with her. Don’t get me wrong…Letterman was way over the line. Kids should be OFF LIMITS. PERIOD. Obama asked for it…and she should have, too…but she was too preoccupied with power and lying about Obama’s background to care about her kids and the effect the campaign would have on them. Letterman should definitely apologize…privately…to her family. And…I beg of you…please do it fast to get her off the airwaves.

Yeah, Letterman’s comments where pretty distasteful and he should not have made them in my opinion ( but we all know about opinions)BUT Palin is hanging on like a “pitbull” using it to her advantage. One rebuttal would have been enough.
Sarah needs to stop talking about this on shows and other avenues and go home and explain to her daughters that comedians always says and makes comments to get peoples attention even if it is in bad taste and not true. She needs to assure them that there is no danger to them in these comments.
Her concern should more be the high rate of rapes in her state. With her always shoving her kids in the spotlight she is perhaps encouraging the interest of one of the many rapist in her own area.
I have a daughter and would not have appreciated these comments. Ms. Palin made many untrue comments in her run for VP, even had that smirk she likes to wear when the crowd was shouting to “kill” Obama.
Both Letterman and Palin are distasteful. Letterman needs to stop with jokes regarding children and Palin needs to go home, do her job and educate her kids about the crazy people in it. It will be hard for her to teach them about honestly though as she goes way beyond the stretching of the truth to try and makes others look bad.

So far 4000+ American soldiers dead, but nothing should have been said because if we didn’t agree with killing our soldiers and thousands of civilians for no reason, (Iraq didn’t attack us remember) we were the divisive ones. Alrighty!

The joke was in very poor taste, and it was not funny.
Accept the apology and move on.
I think everyone realized that David Letterman aimed the joke at Bristol, who is an 18yr old single mother.
It was a swipe at a family that talks family values, and morals, but the oldest didn’t seem to get that message. If your kids aren’t listening to your message, no one else will either.
The tasteless joke was not directed at a 14 yr old girl, and I don’t think David Letterman is advocating abusing girls.
The Palins need to take a deep breath, and realize that they are taking this too far.

Seems that the radical left is dangerous as proven by one of their own killing a security guard. That killer, a radical leftwing moonbat, hated jews (typical of liberals – Rev Wright), hated Bush, hated neocons, and believed in Rosie’s 9/11 tinfoil theory. His next stop was going to be the Weekly Standard. I don’t think he was going to go have a talk about his subscription price.
That guy and the Rosie mental types share the same radical hatred toward America and they must be stopped.
Now we have David Letterman fantasizing about the Palin daughters getting raped by a baseball player. Liberals are sure one sick and disgusting group of people.

Terry – Yes she was and she did get married. As far as I know, her mother didn’t stand up on a soapbox preaching morals to other people! Telling them what is right and wrong. If it would make you feel better to hear jokes about the dead, I’m sure Rush will oblige you.

So you “demand” a link to something a fact I bring up, yet you don’t demand a link for the “kill him” quote proving it was from a conservative that said it.
You disgust me…

Sara Palin is stupid. She does not know the issues she talks about. She does not know the issues that matter to Americans. She is not well read, and she is a terrible candidate that will almost certainly sink the GOP if they run her against President Barak Obama in 2012. Sara Palin is possibly the only person in national politics today who I am satisfied if elected to the White House will turn in an even worst performance than George Bush Jr. Nothing else about her or her family matter to me. Why the GOP thinks Sara Palin was a better choice than say Ms Eisenhower in 08 baffles me. – ITWARZ

Dave really stepped in it this time. He could have told any unsavory joke he wanted to about Sarah Palin and people would have laughed it off. Instead, he cracked a nasty joke about Palin’s 14, I repeat, 14 year old daughter. He probably thought it was OK because Palin lost the election and she doesn’t have the clout she had anymore. It doesn’t help to insult Palin. She’s already been insulted enough. There is nothing you can say about her that she hasn’t heard before. However, decent people would have complained if Dave had cracked a joke about Osama Bin Laden’s 14 year old daughter. The joke was just despicable. Dave could have apologized and moved on, but he smirked and wriggled and decided no one would care. It’s going to be a rude wake up call for Dave when he learns just how many people care about their 14 year old daughters. Dave won’t be laughing when he hears the boos every night. Dave will see that some things really aren’t funny, no matter how much you smile.

Don’t worry folks….it will all be ok…. in 2010 and 2012. This moron will not be POTUS. Pelosi will be totally forgotten, Reid-the rest of the bunch will be out of office. They can’t do too much more to screw up the Country, so until then, sit back, watch the comedy and know it will be over soon. Let not your heart be troubled.

WOW…look at all the whack job lefties sticking up for a “joke”. Lets start joking about Obama’s wife and kids…it is OK because I say them on TV (the president was parading his children). You guys that think this is OK are part of the problem…no morals. Morons!

No longer surprised that so many comments would blame Palin for Letterman’s thoughtless cheapshot for laughs. Tools.

Posted by: Walt | June 12, 2009, 10:39 am 10:39 am

After reading the comments here, I am more than convinced that all of the so called liberal “males” are threatened by a strong and vibrant woman. While it was uplifting to see an African-American president voted into office, it may be a very long time before we see a woman.
The Democrats claim that they are the party of tolerance. That is a laugh. They only tolerate those that agree with them.

Posted by: bjssassy | June 12, 2009, 10:40 am 10:40 am

What does MS. Palin expect? When you plaster your daughter’s picture on magazine covers with her baby. The cold hard truth is her daughter and her boyfriend engaged in unprotected intercourse and she got pregnant. Live with it.

Posted by: GV | June 12, 2009, 10:45 am 10:45 am

If Sarah and Bristol Palin had NOT gotten pregnant before marriage and Hilary and Chelsea Clinton had, instead of realities the-other-way-around, the GOP would be asking America if these women of low moral fiber should be role models for America’s women, etc. But let someone question Palin and somehow she’s now a saint! There has to be some kind of brainwashing to reach such a conclusion!

Posted by: The_Mick | June 12, 2009, 11:02 am 11:02 am

Palin didn’t bring this on herself and she doesn’t need scandals to keep her name in the public eye as many here state. I agree that Letterman has as much class as a wino peeing on a sidewalk and therefore she should have just let his comments go. However, some here say that he was referring to the 18 yr old but does that really matter? It was a classless comment, a comment he would not have dared to make about a Democrat and akin to all the rumors that Palins younger special needs child was not really hers but her daughters.

Posted by: david | June 12, 2009, 11:15 am 11:15 am

Palin is a sad commentary on where we are as a culture…………a morally and intellectually bankrupt presidential wannabe with a “Jerry Springer Show” family of double standards, hypocrisy, greed and dishonesty. It’s sad to see such a politically extremist, lunatic politician use her family so crassly.

Posted by: Sammy | June 12, 2009, 11:17 am 11:17 am

Dave is a late night talk show host. He makes disparaging remarks about all kinds of public figures. This is just an opportunity for Palin to continue to make a cartoon out of herself just to stay in the public eye. Anybody else not trying to be the next Republican candidate for president would have just dismissed the comment. PPuullleeaazzze, leave us alone. Save your rightgeous wrath for the “real” americans, whoever you believe them to be.

Posted by: Gary | June 12, 2009, 11:35 am 11:35 am

No matter who you are, or what political persuasion you happen to be, if someone makes verbal personal attacks against your daughter, you have a right to be upset. That the joke was about a minor, and included remarks about statutory rape make it even worse. Palin’s younger daughter is not a public figure and nobody has the artistic license or right to speak publicly like this about her. Yes, we have freedom of speech but that doesn’t mean you should use that to attack children just because their parents happen to be public figures. Letterman crossed a line–and the only reason I’ll ever watch his show again is to write down all the sponsors in the ads and then write to THEM and let them know how trashy the show they underwrite has become and why I won’t be viewing this garbage or buying their products anymore.

Posted by: Judy | June 12, 2009, 11:40 am 11:40 am

I can’t believe some of the comments here. It’s Palin’s fault for having her family with her? So when Obama has his daughters with him in Paris (because they REALLY needed to go to Europe, right?), is he parading his daughters out for his own self-promotion? Does that mean they should be insulted by comedians? Hardly. Obama himself said that families should be off limits, and every comedian has done that when it comes to his family or Joe Biden’s (whose son had some trouble a while back, but nobody made fun of it because families were off limits). But with Palin somehow all the rules of decency fly out the window, and it’s actually HER fault for the whole thing.
You either support women’s rights or you don’t. If you only support them when it’s a Democrat, you’re a phony. I feel sorry for a lot of the people posting here, but I guess it explains why Dave’s audience laughed when he made those jokes. A sad day in America.

Those that are so critical of Palin; why can’t they just go to a ball game like anyone else and enjoy the game? Is going to a ball game with your family now considered “dragging their children out in the public just to get attention” the liberal babble??? You people must really be afraid of her. I don’t care if he meant Willow or her grandmother, Comments like that should not be made about anyone’s daughter. It really is getting so disgusting, these double standards….. We are living in the “Twilight Zone” people. Wake up!! Stop being so complacent. Don’t support people like Letterman by watching his boring show. It’s time to take control and stop letting the liberal press, TV, people, etc push us around all the time.

I thought the joke was tasteless, and though it was pretty obvious that Letterman meant the older sibling, the circumstances caused it to fall on the 14 year old. Letterman owed her an apology. But GOOD GRIEF. The Palins have taken it to an absurd level now – rape? Letterman a pervert and dangerous around children. It’s become one of those situations where they have overplayed being “wronged” to the point that I’m not sure who owes whom an apology any more! But, I do wish the Palins would go back to Alaska and shut up!

As a mother, I stand by Palin – but I think she is going over board… REMEMBER – Jamie Foxx’s comment about Miley Cyrus, now that would make me go and kick his behind and I was surprise her dad did not come forward and said something back. Then I say who cares their stupid comedians that have nothing better to say about other people but to make fun of them. In addition, I have a remote control and the choice to change channels.

The comment about Chelsea being “pimped out” got the reporter suspended. That comment seemed offensive to a lot of folks then, but this isn’t? No one rallied about free speech or stood up for that reporter then. How is that? Political views aside, any mom would be upset if a comment like this was made about her daughter. Letterman is a jerk for not even having the decency to apologize.

I would never want to be in the public eye. There are Too many erroneous & deeply hurtful things being said and also placed in print. However, I do believe that Sarah has been in the public eye for many years & should have attained the grace by which you ignore the hurtful statements & choose your battles when the conditions are appropriate. Develop a thicker skin Sarah! Your backlash at David is Not going to settle well with future voters. Why would you possibly blow your chance to become the Republicians next candidate, when statements set you off into tirades ?? I know that there is the principle of the subject matter, but get some diginity and drop this spat. You can be better than the woman that you are presenting to the public NOW ! If you plan on becoming our Next President, then you have to show the public that you have nerves of steel and that you cannot become distraut over pithy statements. Take a Deep Breath, Raise Your Head, throw your Shoulders back and become a Leader, not a CryBaby !

Hey Chuck: “He is an entertainer. Just like we won’t hold Palin responsible for all of the racist rants and hateful rhetoric spewed by her and her followers on a daily basis, which I find much more offensive and dangerous, than any late night talk show hosts joke about the dysfunctional family.”
What on Earth are you talking about?

Posted by: Howard | June 12, 2009, 2:28 pm 2:28 pm

I guess the Republicans do not like it when things come back to roost on them. In thier eyes it is ok to incite hate and violence at rallies, on talk radio and TV. Rush can say and do all he wants, spew all his hate with no condemnation on the Republican side, but a joke from a comedian (that was in bad taste)is condemned to all hell. The Palin’s love to parade thier children in the public’s eye and they use them to gain more attention. Lets see parade Bristol out to preach abistance when she could not do it herself. Kids learn by example not do as I say not as I do.

I can not believe the political debate that is going on here. Everyone that is defending Letterman just put yourself in Gov Palin’s shoes. As a mother if someone decided to “attack” (and no matter what you want to say, a bad joke is an attack), I would hit them with all that I had at my disposal. Any of you tha think she is to blame, maybe you should go ask your own Mom for a hug as it seems you didn’t get enough of them as a child. Young girls and young women have enough of a hard time with the way society enables the degradation of them as it is, David Letteman needs to remember that and do what’s right and apologize. Anyone that disagrees with this is simply looking at it as a Democrat versus Repubican issue AND IT’S NOT. Respect the women in your life and they will return the respect.

Let’s see, Bristol Palin supports abstinence, and oops, she gave birth out of wedlock and then oops David Letterman’s staff goofed in their research and Dave compounded the gaff by telling a joke in bad taste based on the bad research. One is understandable and the other is not? If Ms. Palin overreacts like this to her personal life, how will she react as a worldwide representative of the US?
Just for the record for those looking to bash anyone and everyone – we all make mistakes and use bad judgments. We’re just not famous enough for it to be a big deal.

Letterman should be fired! There is absolutely no excuse for such lack of moral decency regarding ANY female. In a world of unrest, terror, outright discrimination and abuse regarding women, this totally disgusting blatant disregard for women by Letterman is intolerable. It just shows what an insecure, pathetic person Letterman actually is.
CBS should also be ashamed of themselves for allowing such smut to be aired. Both Letterman & CBS should be fined.

He should be removed off the network just as the other idiot was for commenting on Nappy Headed hos either from the right or the left the constant degrading of girls and women should stop.
David said he was talking about the older daughter as if that lame excuse is going to make it appropriate..
Boycott him and any other hate monger or bigot that dares to use the public airwaves to slander or vilify women..

Wait a second Letterman never called Palins daughter a slut first off. And this whole subject should have nothing to do with politics at all. Letterman made a few jokes regarding her daughter because she first off is beautiful and second because she got pushed in the public eyes about her being pregnant and having a kid at such an early age by her own family. So leave it as a joke. But there was no joke at all. If you listen to the jokes they were about guys wanting her, no big deal. Seriously everyone lighten up.

Posted by: Jeffrey | June 12, 2009, 4:03 pm 4:03 pm

I mean come on you do not see the people that live in the cities crying out for Palin to say sorry about calling us anti-americans because if you remember her quote that real americans live in small towns and not in cities… Well she is just as much as a moron for making that as much as Letterman could be seen to be for making his comments. So oh well…

And on the subject of not talking about some ones children. Everyone is some ones child EVERYONE. She is 18 years old. It was a joke and there is the freedom of speech. You can not say it is okay for some people to say things and not others. Everyone has the right and if you want to get in a battle of people making rude and just flat out mean comments if David Letterman should be taken off the air then Rush Limbaugh should be put in jail.

Posted by: one sided | June 12, 2009, 4:25 pm 4:25 pm

Jeffrey misses the point. Don Imus degrades women and he gets a big payoff and a new contract.
Letterman degrades women and he get’s to stay on the air.. Seems odd.
The issue is that there are limits that we should put on public discourse. Letterman, Mahrer make stupid statements and now is the time for Americans to put their foot down and boycott the people who sponsor such hate speech..
By the way no one misses the other great social commentator Howard Stern.

Posted by: richard | June 12, 2009, 4:26 pm 4:26 pm

Okay but the HATE SPEECH is not making fun of people. HATE SPEECH is when you pull people together against some one. Okay and I was not talking about IMUS i agree that he should have been put off the air for the rest of his life. But Letterman’s comments were not hate speech. Hate speech is like the comments that were made to kill the abortion doctors a few weeks ago on the air and look some one did. And as for Bill Mahr he does not say hate comments at all. He says stuff about whites, blacks, dem, rep, everyone. but it is true stuff. I do not care if you are any color or creed. If you do something stupid some one has the right to make comments on it. And again there was no HATE SPEECH on Letterman.

Posted by: Jeffrey | June 12, 2009, 4:32 pm 4:32 pm

And if you want to boycott something you have the right too. Shut off your tv and your radio. That is your right. But do not tell me I am wrong for keeping mine on, THAT IS MY RIGHT. And if you are truely American you would know that I have the right to tell you NO. FREE SPEECH is what gives you the right to come on here and make your comments too. If you lived in a country without it you would be shut up if you do not agree with the goverments view no matter what your view is. Just enjoy living in the country and say what you want. But do not get mad at others for telling you that they do not agree with you. get over yourself.

Posted by: Jeffrey | June 12, 2009, 4:36 pm 4:36 pm

And no to bring up another point. Todd Palin is no saint either… He had alot of Hate speeches against your wonderful country you live in. Even made the comments that he wants Alaska to get out of the country of U.S.A. but you do not see everyone saying he should duct taped and gagged because of it, lol. but again if he was in a country that did not have the rights that we have, hmmmm like china, he would be shot and that would be the end of it. So again be happy you are in this great country and let us all say what we want too.

Can you imagine what would happened if a republican said this, he would have been fired or they would have made him apologize. When BO ran for office he wanted his family no be involved in his political conquest. The media honored that, why doesn’t it work for Gov. Palin. There are such double standards, it is sad to see this great nation come to this. Just wait until we get socialize medicine. Then your eyes will open…..

Oh stop it… I am not a Democrat or a Republican. I am not talking about it as either. Put that BS aside. As people and with your rights you either want the freedom of speech of not. WHICH DO YOU WANT ??? And again so what if this conversation is going on. It is part of the freedom of speech. And this debate is the reason this country is a great country. So you are either for the freedom or speech or against it. Not in the middle. So Sandy which are you for ?

Posted by: Jeffrey | June 12, 2009, 4:48 pm 4:48 pm

Reading over these comments it’s painfully clear the astounding degree of hatred that is held for anyone that doesn’t have the same political viewpoint as those writing these hateful comments. Attempting to make this an issue of Palin is how you really don’t have to talk about the real issue of a man saying pathetic and vile remarks about a young girl ( regardless of her age ) for the sake of a cheap laugh. It’s a glaring example of just how much decency and respect for another human being is irrelevant. To attack based on the fact you don’t like someone else’s view of the world is really a statement on how insecure and frightened you are. A strong and secure person wouldn’t need to attack in order to give themselves a sense of worth. It’s just plain sad.

And again just because you call a woman a name or make a joke does not mean you are calling every woman a man. I love women in general. Have nothing against them. I believe in freedom for womens rights and think they are equal. But when it comes down to it. I can call one woman a moron if i want to because that is what i believe about that person. DOES NOT MEAN I MEAN EVERY WOMAN. Just because that person happens to be a woman does not mean it is sexist. DUH !!! Stop making it about some ones gender too. That is the same as some one making any comment about a african american person and even if it has nothing to do with their race and you call it racist. this conversation has nothing to do with gender. it has to do with the freedom of speech and that is the bottom line.

Geez – this reminds me of a fight betweeen by two young kids. Letterman, admit the jokes were in poor taste and give a true apology. Palin, accept the apology and – if you truly want your children left alone – drop the subject and let them fade from the public eye. It’s that simple.

Shame on Letterman and his ilk.
The sheer hate and gnashing of teeth by a certain segment of our society for Governor Sarah Palin is astounding. It makes one wonder why???

This is the second article I have read where the reporter says Gov. Palin “calls for uprising”, but no where do I find where she said that. Bad reporting? Or biased reporting?
Mr. Letterman was in the wrong, he should be man enough to acknowlege that and truly apologize, instead of the schtik he tried to pass off as an apology.

Right on Palin! Letterman is a “No-Class” act and not funny. Any idiot here that defends Letterman’s cynical, uncreative behavior of making perverted, sick “jokes” about young woman need their heads examined. Too many idiots now days think this “crap” is funny.
Palin, thanks for setting these idiots straight!

Come on Letterman attack those groups and call it comedy.
Lets see if your leftist nut jobs laugh at that?

LETTERMAN SHOULD BE FIRED , NO IFS OR BUTS.

I am amazed at what has happened in our society. It is ok to be disrespectful to an 18 year old because she got pregnant out of wedlock – seems to me that Dave is ‘guilty’ of the same offense only he is quite a bit older and made an informed decision to do so. She is a young girl who didn’t listen to her parents. Sheesh – any one of you guilty of the same?
Wow, it is just amazing that we can sink to a ‘He/She did it so I can too’. How about stepping above the fray and refusing to play the game.
As for the Palins, she was there to raise money for Autism and got invited to go to a baseball game. She didn’t thrust her kids in the spotlight. Please, the Obama kids are all over the place but they are given respect. The media has a double standard that needs to end.
What Letterman said was wrong, pure and simple. He said he was sorry for telling the joke but not sorry about the joke. To the millions who watch his trash and not much else, it cements a lower cultural standard. It is amazing to me how far our society has slipped down the slope of destruction in 1-2 generations. I guess we really are destined to be another Roman society. They had it all and in the end they lost it because they lost their moral compass.

Governor Sarah Palin forced rape victims in her home state to pay for their own rape kits but now she is trying to pretend she cares about women who are raped. What a load of crap and what a stinking politician.

Obomination is asked a question from a lowly plumber! He (the Obomination)did not like the question! The plumber is gone after by the Obomination and his cohorts! The media supports him! WHAT A GREAT DAY IN AMERICA!!

If Sarah starts an uprising to oust Letterman, can I be the first to start an uprising to oust her? Sarah is like every typical bully. She can attack as viciously as any barracuda but she cannot take it when it comes back to her. Sarah is hiding behind her children and Letterman’s comments to launch more attacks against President Obama who had nothing to do with what Letterman said. Sarah called the President “He who must be obeyed” and said he called for children to be off limits. Then thing Sarah didn’t point out however is that Mr. Obama was defending HER KIDS!

David Letterman has proven himself to be a dreadful cur who needs to be slapped down for bad behavior. I stopped watching him many years ago for just plain juvenile humor. He has gotten worse over the year, and it has shown in his fathering an illegitimate child with his “girlfriend”, then finally marrying her. He is totally out of touch with reality, and should disappear from prominence as “comedian”. He is now just a bitter old man with a perverted sense of humor and morality.

During her recent interview with NBC’s today show, Gov. Palin, slipped up and NO ONE has caught it yet. She made a remark that during the campaign that President Obama said that Kids are off limits, then the next sentence she said that her kids should be left alone. Get it? Even though she says she is not, that clearly indicated to me that she is running now, for 2012. This culture war crap is the same thing that Regan did during his second term, and Bush Sr. did when he ran against Clinton. David Letterman is no more responsible for the decay of America society than my pet Beagle. Follow the $ and that’s what America is all about. From the top to the bottom, greed has taken over.
Basically 12.5 Trillion dollars is missing from US households (as reported by abcnews). Let’s get real. We got lied into 2 wars, have lost over 4500 soldiers, 120,000 wounded or traumatized. The banking system was raped. Congress is mostly corrupt. The justice system has been subverted. Regulatory agencies (to protect us) have been made ineffective. Does any really think we are being told the truth about 9-11? This list keeps going and going. Now we have Liz Cheney out there… she is just as bad as dad. Rush Limbaugh ? LMAO! The right has gone round’ the bend. The left is not far behind. I am an independent voter, have been since 1980. It doesn’t matter who is in power. We are ALL GETTING SCREWED by the left and the right. C’mon America, does anyone really believe this crap? That is the REAL Raping that is going on? Thomas Jefferson said, “America will always get the government we deserve”. Yes, we do!

I just want the public to get the fact that Sarah Palin is using her kids to attack President Obama who said during the election that HER kids should be off limits to attacks.

Wondering what the people who defend Letterman would think if Letterman joked about their daughters?

Posted by: Hiathome | June 14, 2009, 1:34 am 1:34 am

I think Sara is right .Dave Letterman should be fired. Hes is just trying to cut in on Conan Obrien. So he`s using anything that he thinks is funny . He didnt think it was so funny when someone tried to hurt his child. Can you imagine what Obama would have done if it would have been one of his daughters. Some lines should not be crossed.

Posted by: nancy | June 14, 2009, 12:51 pm 12:51 pm

Letterman is a scum bag and those of you who think it was okay to say any female should get “knocked-up” regardless of her age is immoral, warped and have gone way to far out of norm.

I’m a guy and won’t listen to the letterman show again. He’s been pushing the envelope in the last election and now he’s gone over the edge. They should find a replacement for him.

Does it get any sillier than this for a flash in the pan?
