Please cite the law which requires the President to give Congress an explanation, and to give the IG 30 days notice. I can’t locate information about this law, and need it for discussion.

Please continue to follow this story! It’s not getting much attention elsewhere, and if anything is media-worthy, THIS IS! This is CORRUPTION, plain & simple. Pres. Obama was a co-signer of the law outlining the requirements of firing IGs. It does not appear that IG Walpin did anything that warranted firing – on the contrary, he was doing his job!!! It is OUR money – taxpayers! – that was being misused, and we need people like IG Walpin doing what they were hired to do in order to prevent (or identify & stop) the abuse of taxpayer funds.

Politics stinks, and covering for a fool like Johnson is integrity capital squandered. Having the wisdom to decide which ones to let go is the expectation of the American people. Personal feelings come and go, but integrity issues will stain everyone- the American people in the eyes of the world, our children who see the truth but say nothing. We have enough rotting corpses in the government. We had hoped for more than another moron.

The President has a background in law and also, as a senator, he co-sponsored the bill that set forth procedures for removing an Inspector General in order to protect IG’s from political firings. Yet, initially, he chose to circumvent that legal process by allowing the WH Counsel’s office to place a call to Mr. Walpin pressuring him to resign within an hour.
This is what puzzles me the most. The phone call, outside the legal process, is extremely troubling.

Ryan C, there is a huge difference between Department of Justice attorneys and Inspector Generals. The former serve at the pleasure of the president. They can be fired for ANY reason. Yes, even political motives. Their responsibility is to enforce the law and prosecute those who violate the law.
Inspector Generals don’t prosecute, they conduct independant audits, inspections and investigations to ensure the proper use of taxpayers money. The new law that was passed last year (and co-sponsored by then Sen. Obama) requires that the president give Congress a 30-day notice of intent to fire an IG and to provide a specific reason for the firing. President Obama did neither!
