Sen. Ensign to Acknowledge Affair with Campaign Staffer
ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: Sen. John Ensign — a rising Republican star who has been discussed as a possible 2012 presidential candidate — is poised to announce that he had a “consensual affair” with a campaign staff member whose husband worked in his Senate office, a Republican official tells ABC News. Ensign will hold a press conference later today in Las Vegas to acknowledge that he had a relationship with the former staff member from December 2007 through May 2008. At the time, the woman was working for his Senate reelection effort and his political action committee, the official said. “I take full responsibility for my actions,” Ensign, R-Nev., said in a statement provided to ABC News. “I know that I have deeply hurt and disappointed my wife, my children, my family, my friends, my staff and the people of Nevada who believed in me not just as a legislator but as a person. I deeply regret and am very sorry for my actions.” His wife, Darlene, is issuing this statement: “Since we found out last year we have worked through the situation and we have come to a reconciliation. This has been difficult on both families. With the help of our family and close friends our marriage has become stronger. I love my husband.” As a member of the House in 1998, Ensign voted to impeach then-President Bill Clinton on charges related to the cover-up of his affair with Monica Lewinsky. UPDATE (7:07p.m. ET): Statement from Senator John Ensign: “I came home to Nevada to come forward and explain to the citizens of our state something that I was involved in about a year ago. Last year I had an affair. I violated the vows of my marriage. It is the worst thing I have ever done in my life. If there was ever anything in my life that I could take back, this would be it. “I take full responsibility for my actions. “I know that I have deeply hurt and disappointed my wife Darlene, my children, my family, my friends, my staff and others who believed in me. To all of them, especially my wife, I am deeply sorry. I am truly blessed to have a wife who has forgiven me. We sought counseling last year and have built a stronger marriage — stronger than ever. “I will not mention any names but the woman who I was involved with and her husband were close friends and both of them worked for me. Our families were close. That closeness put me into situations which led to my inappropriate behavior. We caused deep pain to both families and for that I am sorry. “I am committed to my service in the United States Senate and my work on behalf of the people of NV. “Thank you.” Watch Sen. Ensign's statement here.

Sen. DeMint: GOP Race Could Go Until Convention
Obama Avoids Questions on Contraception Rule
Sure, Ensign is a moral hypocrite, but bear in mind that he’s a David Vitter-type, not a Larry Craig-type (i.e. his transgression appears to be a heterosexual one). So, Ensign will be fine – remember Newt Gingrinch admitted cheating on both of his first 2 wives, and he’s considered a front-runner for the GOP/Family Values Party in 2012. It didn’t hurt Guiliani, either.

His wife forgave him, and God will forgive him. But he needs to step out of the public arena. He lost his credibility with people that are still looking for someone that lives what he believes. I’m very grieved because I have been praying for him.

Gloria wrote: “His wife forgave him, and God will forgive him.” … how do you know? Just because the wife said she did doesn’t mean she really did and God works through “sowing and reaping” not blind forgiveness. Let’s not assume we can read the mind of someone else or speak for God … that’s what the religious-right-GOP politicians have been doing for too long!

“Political insiders in the Senate and in Nevada told POLITICO that Ensign began the affair with the staffer several months after he separated from his wife, Darlene. When Ensign reconciled with his wife, the sources said, he gave the aide a severance package, and the two parted ways.
Some time later, a Nevada source said, Ensign met with the husband of the woman involved and had what this source described as a positive encounter. Sources said that the man subsequently asked Ensign for a substantial sum of money — at which point Ensign decided to make the affair public.”
So, big deal — at least he didn’t lie and sneak through back doors like Edwards.

Because that makes it so much better?
Also Ensign had to have been lying and sneeking in the first place to have had an affair.

It’s a lot easier to be a Dem. Affairs are acceptable. If, however, you stand for something, the opposition delights when you fall. I would rather live in a world of people who fell short of their stated values than a world of pathological cheaters like Bubba Clinton.

Democrats do not “endorse” affairs, anymore than Republicans. In fact what most people here talk about is not only regarding affairs et al. but also issues concerning things like gay rights issues and abortion. Republicans talk as if they were annointed by God and declare themselves the punishers by actively seeking to push legislation that affects the lives of everyone else (and really what gall do you people have to assume not only that you speak for God but that it is your right to do so). The cherry on top for us is the unibridled hypocrisy within your party.

How can you ask him to resign when Barney Frank and others have done worse? The voters will decide whether or not to keep him. That is our job. After all, Clinton didn’t resign, and neither has many others. I don’t condone what he did but I don’t yell for all sinners to be condemned for I would be among them. By the way, I am a JFK Democrat, and look at all the affairs he had. At least he was man enough to tell us before we heard from anyone else about it.

Why is he yapping about this now? Is it because he was about to be exposed? Oh, yes, he is a conservative Republican — the guilt was just so overpowering he had to confess to God and country.
Why is it that Republicans choke on the bar they set for everybody else? I feel sorry for no one involved. He should resign and his wife should throw him out. She is capable of raising three children herself.

The man is a joke and if he called for Clinton to resign…I call for him to resign as well.
I am so glad the GOP’s…grand old pontificator (sic) know how everyone else should live their lives…but can’t maintain their own. I know the Democrats aren’t any better. I don’t think Ensign should resign any more than I thought Clinton should resign (though he wasn’t afforded the opportunity to work through the issue with his wife and later admit to infidelity, he was snared before he could…).
I do think he should immediately review his positions on social issues making certain to align his public policy with his private “face”.
Then, and only then will he be able to regain his dignity.

Why is this front page news? These 8 Democratic lawmakers are accused of far more serious transgressions, yet they get very little coverage in regard to their potential crimes.
Speaker of the House, California Rep Nancy Pelosi – stands accused of earmarking funds that would help her husband’s interests in and around the San Francisco area.
Pennsylvania Rep. Jack Murtha – Faces allegations of steering defense spending to the consulting firm his brother works for and another firm that a former staffer founded.
New York Rep. Charlie Rangel – Currently faces no fewer than 4 House Ethics Committee investigations including one for misuse of rent controlled apartments in NYC that are supposed to be for disadvantaged individuals. So much for standing up for the rights of the little guy.
California Rep. Jane Harman – Is fighting allegations that she offered to help seek reduced charges for two pro-Israel lobbyists suspected of espionage in exchange for help from a pro-Israel donor, also suspected Israeli agent.
California Sen. Dianne Feinstein – Is accused of devising legislation that helped her husband get a federal contract to sell foreclosed properties at compensation rates higher than the industry norms. Her defense is that the legislation never became law.
Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd – Continues to stonewall information requests in relation to allegations that he was the recipient of VIP loans from disgraced subprime lender, Countrywide.
North Dakota Sen. Kent Conrad – Continues to hide in Chris Dodd’s shadow while he fights off the same allegations.
President Barack Hussein Obama – Continues to avoid scrutiny regarding the preferential treatment he received from TARP recipient Northern Trust Bank in negotiating a loan and purchasing his Chicago area home for beyond lowball discount of 15% under market prices at the height of this nations real estate boom.

I’m really getting so sick of the “True Confessions” ordeal of yet another unfaithful politician showing up for the TV cameras (often with humiliated political wife in tow) to confess his sins and weaknesses.
Yes, it’s easier to throw rotten tomatoes at someone like Ensign who belongs to a party that would impose their “moral values” on the rest of us by law, but frankly, it’s nobody’s business except Darlene Ensign’s; the rest of us don’t need to know about it.
But that’s what makes the story: the hypocrisy. It’s not that Democrats don’t have their fair share of adulterers (Bill Clinton, anyone) but we’re not basing our political identity on making chastity, abstinence, and heterosexual-only relationships the law of the land. When Republicans quit trying to play the morality police over everyone, then it won’t get so much unworthy attention when a Republican politician strays. His wife will simply kill him, and that will be that ;)

If Republicans would just STOP their annoying claim to be morally superior to the rest of us, then they would not have the problem after their politicos get caught with their pants down. Newtie cheated on his wife as she was dying of cancer and even demanded she sign the divorce papers on her hospital death bed. If we could just learn the truth about these Republican Ayatollahs who claim to be so morally superior, then maybe their polling numbers will go down to the very low number they deserve!

Gotta give him credit for his honesty. He didn’t wait for the Enquirer to break the story – he just came out with it.
People are human. They make mistakes. It takes a strong person to admit your mistakes. How many times did former presidential candidate John Edwards deny his affair, even as he was running for president? How many times did he slander the Enquirer? At least Ensign didn’t stoop to that level.

“The man is a joke and if he called for Clinton to resign…I call for him to resign as well. ” posted by Foster
Foster, people called for Clinton to resign not because of his affair but because he lied under oath about it — that’s a crime (the lying, not the affair). Like the rest of us, presidents are required to tell the truth under oath, Clinton did not, which forced the House to begin impeachment proceedings. Facing the choice of resigning or being impeached – people called for Clinton to save the country the embarrassment of an impeachment trial by resigning. Clinton chose impeachment. Ensign admitted his affair — comparing his situation to Clinton’s is a little like comparing coconuts to chicken.

I’m so tired of these deliberate, misleading comments about family values – as though the family values platform is somehow a bad thing or hypocritical.
The family values platform does not pretend that any family is perfect – never has, rather it acknowledges that people are not perfect and it’s OK to love them anyway, even when they mess up. Believing in family values means loving and supporting your child even if she doesn’t follow your value system and gets pregnant as a teen, or forgiving a wandering spouse – it’s about unconditional love, not perpetuating some fictitious ideal.
