Study: 19 Ambassador Nominees Bundled $4.8 Million for President’s Campaign, Inauguration
If all goes according to plan, Colorado businessman Vinai Thummalapally will soon be moving to a Central American tourist paradise to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Belize.
Thummalapally was President Obama's roommate at Occidental College in 1979. As Barbara and Vinai Thummalapally described it to the Colorado Springs Gazette, they "used to party with (the president) in college. He was the guy who'd drink a few beers, maybe take a toke, stay up until 4 a.m. then excuse himself to crank out an 'A' paper due that morning. … He was Barry, the mellow guy in the leather jacket, dragging on a cigarette."
Of course, friendship only goes so far in the world of ambassadorships. It's Thummalapally's fundraising for — not partying with — President Obama that is more characteristic of his fellow ambassador nominees. The Coloradan bundled between $100,000 and $200,000 for the Obama campaign and has personally contributed $13,375 to Mr. Obama's various campaigns since 1999. And according to Federal Election Commission records, Thummalapally's "not employed/student" children Vishal and Sharanya donated $2,300 and $2,275 to the president.
The information comes from the Center for Responsive Politics, which in a recent study concluded that the president's new nominees for ambassadorships to Belize, Belgium, Liechtenstein, Romania and Switzerland "brought in at least $1.1 million for Obama's presidential bid as bundlers, and at least another half-a-million as bundlers for his inauguration. To date, this brings the contribution histories of Obama's ambassador nominees to roughly $1.8 million in donations since 1989. The 19 ambassadors that CRP has found in our campaign contribution database, along with their spouses and children, have given more than $98,200 to Obama personally, bundled at least $3.4 million for his 2008 presidential run and bundled another $1.4 million for his inauguration."
As we reported last month, President Obama is hardly the first president to appoint pals and big donors to ambassadorships nor, according to the American Foreign Service Association, is he the worst offender in recent history.
In addition to his former Occidental party pal, President Obama nominated:
Former Virginia lieutenant governor and businessman Donald Beyer for ambassador to both Switzerland and Liechtenstein; he and his wife Megan bundled at least $500,000 for then-Sen. Obama's presidential campaign, with Megan bundling at least $245,000 for the inauguration;
Lawyer Howard W. Gutman to be ambassador to Belgium; he bundled at least $500,000 for the campaign and another $275,000 for his inauguration;
Entertainment executive Charles Rivkin to be ambassador to France; Rivkin, head of the entertainment company W!LDBRAIN who produces Yo Gabba Gabba!, bundled at least $500,000 for the campaign and $300,000 for the inauguration;
Lawyer John Roos to be ambassador to Japan; he bundled at least $500,000 for the campaign; and
Lawyer and investment banker Louis Susman to be ambassador to the United Kingdom. Nicknamed the "Vacuum Cleaner" because of his skill sucking up checks for Democratic candidates, Susman and his wife bundled at least $100,000 for the Obama for America campaign and at least $300,000 for the inauguration.
The list goes on and on, but you get the picture.

It’s not surprising. A little disapointing when Obama claimed he would combat the culture of corruption. because every President has done it doesn’t make it excusable. Maybe we should demand Congress pass a law that Ambassadorships are chosen from within the already established Government Service pool. If your a GS, the only way your getting a promotion is if someone dies or retires. Part of the cause of this is the very top are appointees, so when a spot comes open, an appointee takes it instead of someone who has been a GS employee at an Embassy for years.
So lets couple words with actions and demand congress create a law for ambassadorships be promoted from within.

Wonder where Dan Rooney, of Pittsburgh Steelers fame (and family) stands in this list? Dan, a Republican, campaigned for Barack Obama and then President Obama appointed Dan Rooney to the ambassadorship to Ireland. Soooo disappointing for a Rooney to do!

His roommate at Occidental was a foreign born student. That makes him a foreign student too. Having gone to an international college, I know that is how they do it. He is once again ineligible to President of the United States. What Constitution?

Re, Small Donors Increase Impact, By Fredreka Schouten, USA TODAY, 5/2/2008
“Since January 2007, Obama has collected more than $101 million in small donations — an amount that far surpasses the $68.4 million raised in small increments by all 10 Democratic presidential contenders at this stage in the 2004 campaign.
“Obama’s small donation outreach is “staggering,” said Jonathan Krasno, a political scientist at New York’s Binghamton University. “He has done more to reach out to people and to get their donations than I thought was possible”
So, how many ambassadorships will these “small donors” be given?

This “pay to play” BS among our “representatives” makes me want to vomit.
Why has it come to the point where you cannot be an honest representative OF THE PEOPLE unless big, big bucks are involved?
I can’t stand Obama, but I’m blaming the whole system.
I want to disappear to a private island so none of this taint touches me, and no government can tell me what to do. Except, that would take lots of money, wouldn’t it?

What’s the big deal?
Just because he gives big donors an Ambassadorship?
HE IS GIVING US FUNDAMENTAL CHANGE. Examples:
Firing Inspector Generals that get too close to his cronies.
Taking over publicly listed companies (GM) and giving equity to unions at the expense of bondholders.
“Not knowing” relatives are in the country illegally living on taxpayer dollars and doing nothing about it.
Giving his first television interview to a muslim organization.
Apologizing to Europe and the Middle East for America’s arrogance.
Greatly increasing the deficit, much beyond Bush’s reckless spending.
Attempting to socialize and/or regulate all aspects of our life.
What’s not to like?

The Democratic Chicken Little act resonated well with a rapt and gullible elecorate. Combine the facts that taxpayer money now funds the fraudulent ACORN “get-out-the-Democratic-vote” machine the villification of financially stable citizens and the Federal destruction of US companies and you can see that we can easily become a one-party ruled nation. One point that’s interesting about Obama’s appointment of Susman to be the Ambassador to the UK is that while
the Obama White House press release of May 27, 2009, which announced Susman’s nomination to be its Ambassador to the UK, indicated that he used to be the Citigroup Corporate and Investment Banking Vice Chairman, was a member of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team’s board of directors from 1975 to 1989, worked for Salomon Brothers and “was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to the U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy,” it failed to mention some other interesting recent business affiliations of Louis “The Vacuum Cleaner” Susman.
According to a November 15, 2000 Business Wire article, Susman has also been a member of the corporate boards of D & K Healthcare Resources, Inc., the U.S. Can Corporation, Drury Inns and Knightsbridge Solutions LLC in recent years. The same article also revealed that at Salomon Brothers, Susman “provided leadership for major merger transactions, representing Dayton Hudson in the purchase of Marshall Field’s, General Dynamics in the sale of Cessna Corporation, and LG Electronics in the purchase of Zenith Electronics Corporation.”
U.S. Ambassador to the UK-Designate Susman apparently has a lot more experience working as a Citigroup investment banking and collecting campaign contributions for some of the U.S. politicians who recently authorized the use of public funds to bail out Citigroup’s executives than diplomatic experience.

“President Obama is hardly the first president to appoint pals and big donors to ambassadorships nor, according to the American Foreign Service Association, is he the worst offender in recent history.”
I’m guessing the right will work themselves up since he’s merely doing better – but he’s not 100% perfect so obviously he’s an utter failure and should be impeached immediately.

BlueCaddy65:”Combine the facts that taxpayer money now funds the fraudulent ACORN “get-out-the-Democratic-vote” machine,”
That’s particularily humorous coming in the week that Mark Anthony Jacoby, owner of a group called Young Political Majors (YPM), pled guilty to voter registration fraud. Of course, YPM was hired by the Republican Party to register their voters so that’s not worth talking about. Better to keep working on repeating that ACORN lie (could you cite the line that earmarks funding to them again?).

“So, how many ambassadorships will these “small donors” be given?”– Percy, that’s beautiful! Thanks for making me laugh.
And Axey, you are right, the “bush did it first” crowd will be along directly. I used to keep track of how many comments we got before someone tried to misdirect the conversation with a “bush is evil” remark. It’s my own little corollary to Godwin’s Law– The Moderate Corollary. Not only is it true that the longer the thread, the higher the probability that “bush is worse” will be used to excuse whatever Obama is up but it seems the more blatantly indefensible the Obama behavior, the more quickly someone will bring up Bush. Thus, the firing of the IGs should inspire folks to bring Bush up pretty quick (and we quickly got the “Walpin was a Bush appointee” excuse right away from commentors who shall remain nameless, lest my comment get deleted). The ambassadorships, a practice that has a long tradition that Obama said he would change, may not inspire the Bush deployment until we hit 30 comments.

Danita— “It is true – the number of small contributors to Obama’s campaign and the impact of those contributions was unprecedented and phenomenal.”- Is almost a urban myth perpetuated by Obama’s spin doctors to make it appear as if it is these folks that got him the financial kick to buy the presidency. It is true that the ‘average Joe’ that never sent donations before donated $5.00 to maybe $50.00. However, these donations never really made up a large percentage of the donations he received, it was a great smoke screen when people started wondering how an unknown was able to pull in more then the Clintons. All you have to do now is read who is on his receiving line for cushy jobs, what new organizations are getting more government support and who is actually receiving funds from this huge trillion dollar debt to see who Obama is glad handing and it certainly ISN’T the ‘average Joe’.
On another note I was stunned to see this article on the All Barack Corp. Then again maybe this too is just another smoke screen, if one starts to wonder about ABC’s cozy relationship with Obama, where they “hosting”(??) the White House Health Care broadcast, they can just point to this article and say “See, we’re doing our job”. This Admin. is nothing but ‘smoke and mirrors’. Case in point— has anyone wondered how a garden planted in April can been ready to harvest NOW??!!

“About $156 million, or a quarter of Obama’s record-shattering campaign account, came from donors of $200 or less, according to the (non-partisan Campaign Finance Institute’s) analysis of federal election reports through Oct. 15. That compares with $205 million, or about a third, from those who gave between $2,300 and $4,600.”

For those of you who don’t get “the point”, here it is. Barry said he was for CHANGE. Barry said he was not going to do things the way they had always been done because they didn’t work. Barry said came from a clean background and was going to run a clean, transparent government. But Barry was just a partying pot-smoker in college, which other people paid for, and now he is using our money to put this country further into debt; while he hands out appointments to his friends and relatives. Have you seen who he appointed to the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships? Not the change good ol’ Barry was talkin’ about. That it was done before is no excuse; not when you tell us things are going to change. The only change I’m seeing so far is for the worse!

Most of Obama’s donations came from fictional characters, disguising the true origin of the donations, since Obama’s team left their donation programming open to fraud, intentionally so. That’s how they got around the law, and NOBODY called them on it.
And because he broke his promise (shock!) and refused public campaign funds, his records were kept closed, unlike McCain, the idiot.
Many millions came directly from George Soros and foreign contributors, all of it illegal, and all of it… well, he got away with it, just like he gets away with everything. The media in this country is worth less than TASS.
At least TASS told you what each farmer’s quota would be for the five-year plan.

America’s problem with obama corruption is the hypocrisy of obama and his ilk
obama campaigned and promised to clean up and not be bush – a big fat laugh tract for those Americans with common sense, but meat for the sycophants, such as yourself
obama and his hypocrisy and lies is the issue and the marginal obama voters are getting the message and seeing the light
liberals such as yourself, are getting angrier, because you see the fact that a big part of obama voters are waking up to the obama lies and hypocrisy and the marginal obama support will not last forever

David, dear, Senator Ensign works on Capitol Hill, remember? So he is not on Mr. Tapper’s beat. ABC is covering his fall from grace and the fact that he resigned his leadership position. In fact, there’s a story on their main page right now about Ensign making calls on behalf of the mistress’s husband. If there’s a blog posting about Ensign, it would most likely be on The Note or George’s blog.
As for a Fox News coverup, that’s a laugh. I saw the post about this “coverup” on Daily Kos (yep, I read across the spectrum). Seems the husband of the mistress allegedly wrote a personal letter to a Fox news anchor pleading that she report on the affair, based on his accusation. Now Kos may think this is a fine source and that, since Fox did not follow through with an ‘expose’ that they were ‘covering up’ for the Senator. But I would think that all the cable outlets get numerous such ‘tips’ on a regular basis, and most of them do not pan out as legit. So the fact that Megan Kelly, who is an anchor/newsreader, not a reporter, did not track this story down does not particularly trouble me. If the hubby really wanted to get the story out, why didn’t he try to tip off someone he considered more likely to jump at the chance to report on Republican misconduct, like, say, Keith Olbermann?

I think the problem here is twofold. Bush never pretended that he would do away with such practices.
The other part is whether the indignation is expressed based on the number of appointments versus the dollar amount:
President appts ave $
Bush 39 $114,000
Obama 19 $252,000
So the payoff with Obama is 1/2 the cronyism at more than double the cost.

Danita,
YOU are the one who doesn’t get it.
0bama promised that he would do NONE of this stuff.
He didn’t promise “I’ll do less than Bush did” or “I’ll do less than Hillary will” or “I’ll do less than McCain might do”.
He said zero. Zip. Zilch. NO-THING.
But because you drink the 0bama kool-aid, you can’t see anything wrong with 0bama lying, taking over private industries, socializing health-care, trying to shut down news outlets that are not sympathetic to him, just like his hero Hugo Chavez in Venezuela.
The man has the mentality of a tyrant. At this point, he has yet to do any physical harm to people, but his (illegal) firing of 3 Inspectors General (breaking a law that he himself co-sponsored) is a real bad indication of where he is taking this country.
And yes, millions voted FOR him, but millions voted AGAINST him too. He did not win by a blowout, it was 52%-46%-2%. What put him over the top was independents, and I’ll bet there are millions of them who will not vote for him a second time, putting him well on the path to a single-term adminsitration, just like his Presidential role-model, Jimmy Carter.
And thank God for that, because the country will not survive 8 years of a man who has no clue what he is doing.

Obama can certainly claim a mandate with a clear popular vote win as well as an overwhelming electoral college victory.

Obama’s hypocrisy on nearly every issue is a given. He promises the world and delivers nothing.
That said, I’ll give him (fundraiser) ambassadorships like Belgium and Belize, not really the most pressing junctures of the world. But essential allies and powers like Japan deserve someone with expertise in the region.
This John Roos character, from what I can gather online, has no fluency in Japanese and no knowledge of Japanese affairs. That’s a terrible slight to one of our most important allies. Same with Chris Hill, the failed State Department negotiator with North Korea, moving over to Iraq.

So let me get this straight Ryan C, out of all of the legitimate arguments that Nick in Virginia brought up, your only come back was that he was off a few tenths of a percent in the math? All of the other legitimate arguments were glossed over. Typical leftist debate skills. No discussion of the illegal IG firings, no discussion of breaking 200 year old bankruptcy law by giving the unsecured GM and Chrysler lenders first crack at the money. Nothing about the people that he called “Speculators and Fat Cats” in order to demonize them, who were actually everyday people who were counting on that money for their 401K’s. Nothing about his complete and total fabrication about transparency in his policies. Just that Nick was off by .8% or .9% in the wrong direction? Trust me Ryan, by the time 2010 and especially 2012 rolls around, this list and so much more will be up on a nice pretty PowerPoint slide for you to digest at the debates. When the loss comes, you can assuage your anger in knowing that you voted for the first black President, qualified or not. But really, what do I know. I have obvious problems with my limbic system.

Not surprising a right winger prefers that but don;t expect a free pass on it.
Obama won by 11 Million votes and 7% of the electorate.
It was a resounding win.
“Trust me Ryan, by the time 2010″
In 2010 when the GOP should traditionally be picking up a few seats, they will be lucky to break even.

“Obama the candidate never promised perfection – that’s just the straw man put forward by right wing Republicans – the image they tried to stick on him by calling him (repeatedly) ‘the messiah’.”
That’s because Obama IS the Messiah.
On February 24, 2008, Louis Farrakhan made the following remarks while addressing a large crowd at Nation of Islam Saviour’s Day 2008: “You are the instruments that God is going to use to bring about universal change, and that is why Barack has captured the youth. And he has involved young people in a political process that they didn’t care anything about. That’s a sign. When the Messiah speaks, the youth will hear, and the Messiah is absolutely speaking. Brothers and sisters, Barack Obama to me, is a herald of the Messiah. Barack Obama is like the trumpet that alerts you something new, something better is on the way.”
To the best of my knowledge, Farrakhan is not a right-wing Republican.

“Obama can certainly claim a mandate with a clear popular vote win as well as an overwhelming electoral college victory.”
I can claim I’m from outer space, but that doesn’t make my car a flying saucer.
Obama comes from the same school of thought as every other republican or democrat that has ever been elected to ANY office comes from: the one that teaches that politicians are held to a different standard than your average citizen. Say whatever you want, as long as the end result is winning the election. Don’t worry about the plausability of your statements, because there’s always someone else to blame it all on.
Being a politician is his JOB. If he doesn’t get elected to SOMETHING, he’s unemployed.
Food for thought…

Oh my Lord. What the heck is the problem? Awarding Ambassadorships to campaign contributors has been the status quo for generations now. Why is everyone freaking out NOW that it’s Obama doing it? Why is everyone acting like it’s some totally new scandal? What’s disturbing is that the news media is holding the black man to a totally different standard than past presidents.

..Got deleted eh? I’ll try this again.
” What the heck is the problem? Awarding Ambassadorships to campaign contributors has been the status quo for generations now.”
Obama ran a campaign on “change”, and then staffed his cabinet with the same Washington/Wall Street insiders that helped to created our economic woes. But I guess you’re right Bret, Obama awarding his fat-cat friends Ambassadorships, isn’t so much a problem as it is an indication that Obama is just another business as usual politician, and all that talk about “change” was just manipulative hot air to win the votes of the gullible.
