‘This Week’ Sunday: Sens. Chris Dodd and Lindsey Graham

Coming up on "This Week" Sunday: an exclusive debate between two key senators: Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., of the Senate foreign relations, banking and health committees, and President Obama's point man on Capitol Hill on health reform legislation, and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who has emerged as a chief critic of the Obama administration's handling of foreign relations and national security issues.

Unrest in Iran dominated headlines this week as Obama's health care reform and economic agenda hit speed bumps on Capitol Hill.

The contested presidential elections in Iran are complicating the administration's delicate attempts to  forge a new U.S.-Iranian relationship, sparking a new line of attack from the GOP.

Meanwhile political wrangling in Washington, D.C. has slowed progress in Congress on the administration's health reform agenda and it's financial regulation overhaul plan.

Plus, with me to discuss all of the week's politics, our "This Week" Roundtable: ABC's George Will, Cokie Roberts, Sam Donaldson, former Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich and Bill Keller of The New York Times.

You don't want to miss this Sunday's show.

I hope somebody asks Chris Dodd about the AP article………WASHINGTON (AP) — The wife of a senator playing a lead role on a national health care overhaul sits on the boards of four health care companies, one of several examples of lawmakers with ties to the medical industry. Jackie Clegg Dodd, wife of Sen. Chris Dodd, serves on the boards of Javelin Pharmaceuticals Inc., Cardiome Pharma Corp., Brookdale Senior Living, and Pear Tree Pharmaceuticals, a financial disclosure report the senator released Friday shows.”

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, tell us what your doing to help the American’s in your state? Maybe opening up new shelters!

Why aren’t Sen. Dodd, Sen. Conrad, and Congressman Barney Frank being investigated by their Ethics Committees for their roles in the mortgage meltdown? Let’s hope that the political hack, Mr. Steffy, has the cashews to bring the subject up.

If the House voted to support the Iranian Green Party. How does the House plan to support them, with words, OOOOH the leaders in Iran are so worried about the Marshmellow US Congress. Glad France back in 1777 didn’t have the current US House courage..

No thanks. I’ll just read about it. The thought of Chris Dodd and Sam Donaldson on the same TV screen sends waves of nausea over me.

Ron:
Why aren’t Sen. Dodd, Sen. Conrad, and Congressman Barney Frank being investigated by their Ethics Committees for their roles in the mortgage meltdown?
—————————————-
Because this CORRUPT liberal Congress is NOT going to investigate their own alligators in the swamp! I expect there will be an adjustment in the balance
of power in the House next year, UNLESS Acorn does their job of voter fraud again. We need WATCHDOGS INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE POLLS!! After all, Obama
had the New Black Panthers at the Polls in Philadelphia, wielding billy clubs. Eric Holder refused to prosecute these THUGS! Aren’t you proud of our new government? Change we can believe in!
pffft!

Ron posted “Why aren’t Sen. Dodd, Sen. Conrad, and Congressman Barney Frank being investigated by their Ethics Committees for their roles in the mortgage meltdown?”
——————————————————-
and what role was that Ron? They lied about the state Freddie was in? Perhaps they really believed it, like McCain saying the economy was strong. Maybe they did lie, but it will be hard to prove that, wouldn’t it.
In the mean time, the actually people doing the bad things in Freddie / Fannie get a free pass from the right. Why is that? Look up James B. Lockhart, see how much he had to do with our mortgage problems. Why isn’t he investigated.
What about Phil Gramm and his repeal of Glass-Steagall that allowed investment bank to merge with other kinds of business? What about Gramm getting a bill put through to keep derivatives from being regulated? Look that up to. Educate YOURSELF. Don’t relay on the likes of Fox News or Limbaugh. The truth is out there and the truth is Dodd and Frank were NOT that big of villain in this mess.

The Iranian situation now is a mirror image of our 2008 Presidential elections. They have had their version of Bush/Cheney which is Khamenei/Ahmadinejad.Think about it.They have had years of their Conservative rollacoaster ride and enough is enough!!They voted, and the results have been Cheneyed, they complain and they are labeled bad Iranians by the Iranian president.
Definition:Cheneyed– To manipulate facts and statistics to supplement a particular point of view.
Iranians voted get rid of the status quo and the Conservatives sent out thugs to beat them with clubs. The Americans voted to do the same and Conservatives are still sending out thugs,( Political Hacks )to verbally beat the public and who they voted for.

SamTyler1973, Keep up the good work.Uncle Phil will never be off my radar untill we have a national discussion, town hall meeting or something similar to reveal exactly what happened to Americas financial institutions for the past 15 years.I understand John McCain is on tv today to criticize the Obama Admin. Would some one ask him about his Presidential campaign economic advisor, Phil Gramm?
You know Uncle Phil, who said ” What recession?” ” America is a nation of whiners” ” The public is only in a mental recession”. Gramm’s wife, was on the ENRON board making millions while it was being run into the ground, no regulation.Uncle Phil: The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act in 1997. Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000. This was McCains economic advisor for 2008.Can you imagine??

Sitting here listening to Dodd and Graham hitting all their carefully memorized talking points about Iran and losing interest fast. Then we moved on to insurance. Obama’s plan is an inadequate failure before it even starts. The republicans have no plan other than “find a way to pay or die” and screams of “socialism” which has started to look pretty good to me after 8 years of neo-con policies. No one is talking about getting out of the mideast; something which would free up a lot of money to help pay for single payer.
I need a third party. No one that I see in D.C. gives a flying flip about us. They all appear to be totally absorbed in their little power games. I’m sick and tired of them all.

When will someone start talking about the role of the individual in health care? Large people are a large part of the problem i.e. obesity and related conditions. There is NOTHING that the government can do if a person eats too much and doesn’t exercise.
A model based on automobile insurance, where an owner maintains the car and is only invoked in unusual events, is the right path.

Posted by: Diane | June 21, 2009, 9:15 am 9:15 am

I’m so glad you brought up auto insurance.
There was a clear cause and effect to be seen when mandatory auto insurance was passed and auto insurance rates soared to the outer atmosphere and beyond. It was an early indicator of the failure of the free market when the “free market” is catered to by the politicians and it is a clear and obvious reason why health insurance companies should be shut completely out and single payer should be implemented.

The issue is NOT just government vs. private sector. Where is the role for individual responsibility ?
Neither the government nor a corporation can save an individual who, through their lifestyle choices, will not save themselves.

Posted by: Diane | June 21, 2009, 9:37 am 9:37 am

Jan,
On your issue of a third party, may I suggest support for the Fair Tax.
I like it because our current system taxes achievement. In every other case we acknowledge that taxing something is a way to discourage it. Why would we want discourage achievement.
The Fair Tax would also eliminate annual tax returns – returning privacy to citizens.
Finally, it takes the power to influence individual out of Washington. A good first step to moving influence not necessarily to a third party but to the people.

Posted by: Diane | June 21, 2009, 9:42 am 9:42 am

Diane. Fair tax is a stupid notion that is designed to hit the middle class even harder than it hits now.
Lifestyle choices are dictated, in part, by income. This is a well researched and well known fact. Poor people tend to be heavier because they can’t afford healthy food so they buy whatever it takes to fill their stomach so that they aren’t hungry.
In addition, people tend to put on weight as they age; a fact that you may find out eventually for yourself.

Posted by: jan | June 21, 2009, 9:47 am 9:47 am

I might add that the republicans appear to be the party of the insane and the democrats appear to be the party of the oblivious. Both of them have failed. I need a third party to vote for.

George Will is out of touch with America. When is the last time he got out of the Loop of DC and spent time in and with average Americans?
Mr Will, the health care system does not work well. If you did spend time with real, down to earth people you would know this. I don’t know what the answer is, however don’t just throw numbers out that the system is working. Even one person with the ability to have coverage in America is not acceptable. If you don’t believe this, then I challenge you to drop your own heath care for a long period of time and then go to get services.
I have always been a fan of yours and do respect your opinions. However, I do not believe you are in touch with the reality out in our wonderful country.

Cokie Roberts said during the
roundtable that “No one agrees with Obama on auto bailout”! She hasn’t been to Michigan, I guess, in a long time. She ought to come and visit Detroit, Grand Rapids, the UP. Highest unemployment in the US; families truly struggling. Maybe you “guys’ need to get out of Washington and see what is really going on in this country!

Posted by: Jennifer Parks | June 21, 2009, 10:02 am 10:02 am

July 1st, although I still have BCBS through work, I’ll be paying three times more from each check and not making any more money and yet I still have a large deductible and still can’t afford anything but a GP copay. We need a public single-payer option and we need it now!!

Posted by: Morgan | June 21, 2009, 10:07 am 10:07 am

Jennifer,
While Cokie is in Michigan, I invite you to come to the south where the US has an automotive industry that works, pays taxes and supports communities.
It is stunning what happens when companies serve the market instead of the unions.

Posted by: Diane | June 21, 2009, 10:09 am 10:09 am

Can we please ban George Will, Cokie Roberts, and Sam Donaldson banned from the Roundtable? They already have what they’re going to say planned out ten years in advance. They are empty people who have shown complete and utter laziness when it comes to weighing the effects of policy on the American people.

Posted by: LIJ | June 21, 2009, 10:11 am 10:11 am

Morgan,
Get out of BCBS ! When you are in a group plan, you are subsidizing many services that you don’t need. You can get individual plans that offer catastrophic coverage and what you save in premiums will more than cover any out-of-pocket maintenance costs that you pick up. I found I could pay for all regular, preventive care cost less than 2 months premiums and I still have great coverage for things like hospitalization, cancer care, etc.

Posted by: Diane | June 21, 2009, 10:19 am 10:19 am

(sigh) I’m in a non-BCBS plan. You still have to come up with the co-pay which can be difficult when people are struggling to keep a roof over their head and food in their stomach. Feel lucky and grateful that you apparently aren’t walking in their shoes, Diane.

Posted by: jan | June 21, 2009, 10:24 am 10:24 am

Jan,
You are correct. I live where there is a county health care system that will NOT provide services to anyone with private insurance so NO ONE is denied access. I don’t think our system is unique since we are a small county in a relatively rural area.
Back to BCBS – the money for the co-pay comes from dramatically reduced premiums. Therefore, these folks would actually have more money in their pocket than they do now.

Posted by: Diane | June 21, 2009, 10:39 am 10:39 am

Chris Dodd and Linsey Graham are only speaking the party line. Why wast time interviewing them when everyone know what they’re going to say. It’s all about the party not the country or the American people. I can’t stand any of them never mind believing anything they may say.

Posted by: k clark | June 21, 2009, 10:57 am 10:57 am

I can appreciate (not like) how politicians like Chris Dodd are non responsive to questions. Like most, Dodd offered no specifics, detail or remedy other than to repeat “we must reduce cost”. Heck, we’ve know that for decades.
To have a press related panel repeat the same thing? Geesh George, who the are you inviting to chair the panel? Maybe your panel should include those in the trenches: from the blue collar auto worker to corporate CEOs.
Lets see the facts and start a national dialog on resolutions:
In short… Doctors can earn as little as $110K annually – hopefully most are earning more. Yet, at $135 for a fifteen minute office visit, medical facilities are earning $540 per Hour. A single doctors insurance is still relatively low at about $80K annually.
Where the heck is the money going?
George, the show, your guest and panels are digressing. The subject matter has become a rant of ill-advised content. If your guest can’t come to the table with facts and suggestion, where’s the entertainment or more “the education”?
Will you ever simply call a politician “Non-Responsive” and move on. Your audience does and for them its “changing channels”. And then what? So much for those advertising dollars.

George Will seems quite proud of his Medicare card. I’m surprised that his doctor even new what a Medicare card was. George can probably still get a private room, or semi-private, when he needs an overhaul. Probably his hospital food is the very best of hospital swill. If I need my appendix out, I’ll just pray that the emergency room doctor doesn’t leave any sponges in there. Oh well, us commoners have to take what we can get. The crumbs from the tables of the wealthy.

Dodd reminds me of a character from Atlas Shrugged.
What a creep that guy is.
He is the epitome of what is wrong in Washington.

Please ban Reich from the Round Table…he is an economist like I’m an astronaut.

Posted by: Sam | June 21, 2009, 12:20 pm 12:20 pm

The Fair Tax is exactly as its name implies.
We all get one vote…we should all pay the same tax but even the Fair Tax addresses concerns on the poor with a rebate to the lowest earners.
Anyone opposed to it is an obvious die hard close minded liberal. That kindof thinking is why we are tripling our debt and thus sending up interest rates up which will in turn hurt the housing market…which is at the root of our current financial woes.
If the Democrats are allowed to remain in power the result will be a far larger government, a stagnant at best economy though probably declining, much higher energy costs due to Cap and Trade and a Value Added Tax that will increase the cost of every purchase you make.
I can hardly wait. Things are going to be so great.
Ladies and Gentlemen….your Democrat party will lead you down a road to doom …all the while flashing silver tongues that tell you nothing but lies and half truths. Their future does not have to come to pass.
Some will no doubt scoff…but if so go study Europe. Is that what you want? Really?

Posted by: Sam | June 21, 2009, 12:32 pm 12:32 pm

Jan,
You are right. I live where the county health system refuses to provide services to anyone with private insurance so everyone has access to services.
Back to the non BCBS option, the money for co-pays comes from the dramatically reduced premiums so those people would actually have MORE money in their family budget after the change.

Posted by: Diane | June 21, 2009, 12:32 pm 12:32 pm

Sam,
You are right. I lived in the UK with socialized medicine and it was a fiasco. For instance, doctors were paid by the number of patients assigned to them – regardless of what care they provided. So when I went to the dentist with a cavity, he decided not to fill it (because he would incur cost for the materials). He told me to come back when it was causing me so much pain that I thought it needed immediate attention.

Posted by: Diane | June 21, 2009, 12:38 pm 12:38 pm

Here is a thought on a public health option:
A public option should only be included in the reform plan IF all members of Congress (and their families) are REQUIRED to participate in the public option.

Posted by: Diane | June 21, 2009, 12:40 pm 12:40 pm

Sam:
I think that a fair tax is flat tax. Because, an increase of 25 to 30 percent on everything they buy is not going to seem very fair to most people. I know, their’s the pre-bate program. If it’s ‘pre’ it certainly requires some guessing. In a case of hyper-inflation this could be a problem. Plus, the pre-bate program is additional beauracracy. We need to cut down on beauracracy, not increase it. A flat tax income tax could be determined on 3″x5″ index card. And loopholes would be eliminated.

I watched Stephanopoulos show and was amazed. George Will vs Not 1, Not2, Not 3 But 5 Liberals at once. George, Reich, Donaldson, Cokie Roberts and Bill Keller of the NY Times. And this show is one of the more balanced leftist shows. 5 vs 1.

American Healthcare works fine. Lowering the quality for 90% of Americans in order to insure illegal aliens will not go over well.

With friends like Dodd defending the peoples preference for a National Govt. Plan (like-Single Payer)at least to “compete with Private Insurance” who needs enemies. Dodd was tongue tied and factless while Graham recited the Republican talking points. All he had to say was with 70-80% demanding this the Republicans will have to see what is mightier- the Dollar or The Vote. Apparently in DC it is the dollar now, guess it’s house cleaning time.
