Where is Gov. Sanford, and Who’s In Charge of SC?
ABC News' Elizabeth Gorman reports:
The first lady of South Carolina said that her husband, Gov. Mark Sanford, has been gone for several days, and she did not know where he was.
His cell phone was turned off, and he wasn't answering texts or phone messages for four days, The State, a South Carolina newspaper, reported.
"The governor put in a lot of time during this last legislative session, and after the session winds down it's not uncommon for him to go out of pocket for a few days at a time to clear his head," Sanford spokesman Joel Sawyer wrote to ABC News.
"Before leaving last week, he let staff know his whereabouts and that he'd be difficult to reach. Should any emergencies arise between the times in which he checks in, our staff would obviously be in contact with other state officials as the situation warrants before making any decisions," he wrote.
His wife Jenny Sanford told the Associated Press she is not concerned, and that he'd said he needed time away from home to write.
But Sanford's absence does raise concerns for Sen. Jake Knotts, R-SC, who contacted authorities as early as Saturday when he heard that Sanford couldn't be reached.
"I want to know immediately who is running the executive branch in the governor's absence," he said.
The South Carolina constitution states that “in the event of the temporary absence of the Governor from the State, the Lieutenant Governor shall have full authority to act in an emergency.”
South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer said he wasn't aware of Sanford's plan.
"Our job is to serve if needed. We have talked to the governor's office, and they tell us they know where the governor is, and that they will call us if needed. They have told us if anything occurs, they will call us," a spokesperson for Bauer told ABC News.
Although Gov. Sanford is not in touch, he still managed to Twitter on Monday. His tweet read: "SC's government structure fundamentally flawed." It linked to an op-ed he wrote that was published on Sunday.
It was his staff, and not Sanford, who tweeted.
UPDATE: From Sanford's office late Monday night: "The governor is hiking along the Appalachian Trail. . . . I want to emphasize
that this isn't something that either staff or Mrs. Sanford is concerned about.
As we said earlier today, it isn't unusual for the governor to be out of pocket
for several days after the legislative session. We knew he would be difficult to
reach, and that he would be checking in infrequently."
UPDATE: Sanford's office said he called and checked in with his office this morning. "It would be fair to say the governor was somewhat taken aback by all of the interest this trip has gotten," Sanford's spokesman said. Sanford is planning to be back in the office tomorrow, "given the circumstances and the attention this has garnered," the spokesman said.

Geez, he’s in Atlanta – his wife knew where he was going; his staff knew where he was; he’s checked in regularly. What’s the mystery??????

What a responsible way to spend taxpayer dollars – on a secret vacation.

Wow, of all the stories that could have been reported, the producers picked this one about Mark Stanford. If he is gone, none of the local news channel in the Charleston or Myrtle Beach area reported it. Simply put he is an idot and the worst governor of the state of South Carolina. He only cares about his million dollar home in the Charleston area and keeping the poor and minorities from getting an education.

come on, we all know where he is, he is attending the vitter/ensign school of cheating spouses. he will soon graduate and become one of the “im so sorry wifey club.”

Maybe he’s in Alaska checking for earthquake damage, “Did the earth move for you too Sarah” or did anyone check to see if there was a Klan meeting this weekend??

Public leaders have a duty to be accountable to the public, but they aren’t convicts. The guy is allowed to take a vacation. If his wife isn’t worried, and his staff says they can locate him, this is nothing but a fluff story. Most Americans appreciate getting away for a week or two every once in a while.

He was “re-enacting the Civil War”, and then he had a “meeting” with the Wizard and the head of the White Supremacy. He might have made a run to the gun shop to buy some more guns………..his brain is empty, nothing else left.

South Carolinians need to get more power to “oust” this trash. Maybe they should do some “oust parties” and send him to the “secret places” forever.

He was hiding under the bed at Sarah Palin’s house.

While I agree with others who posted that the Governor has a right to take a vacation, he has the duty to tell people he is going to be gone! Even in my lowly occupation, telling others I am going to be out of the office and when they can expect me back is required.

He’s just out fetching us South Carolinians some of them jobs so we can like live and stuff. He cares so very deeply about the people of his state. ;)

He’s probably off having secret meetings on how to permanently keep the people of SC ignorant…so the state can stay red forever. He needs something more effective than closing all our public schools since people can still get some book learnin on their own. What to do? What to do?

And what, if anything, does the sudden death of the SC State Prosecutor have to do with Sanford’s sudden disappearance? “She had a health issue,” they said. A fatal health issue that no one knew about until she dropped dead? What does a husband and father need to leave home for in order to write? A Dear Jane letter? A confession? A resignation? Something that couldn’t be written at home with his children and wife?

This is news!!! Everybody wants to get away once and awhile. No biggie. His wife is not concerned. Another gossiping news media ploy. These journalists need to have someone talking about THEM.

He refused the stimulus money from Obama, so is the media after him? I commend him for that, all the less money my kids and grandkids have to pay back. THANK YOU.

Anna:”He refused the stimulus money from Obama, so is the media after him? I commend him for that, all the less money my kids and grandkids have to pay back. THANK YOU.”
He did not have the power to refuse the money, the legislature accepted it on the state’s behalf. How convenient – his state gets the money AND he can convince low-information voters that he made some sort of real stand as opposed to hollow grandstanding.

He wasn’t with his wife or kids on Father’s Day – are you kidding me? Even his wife can’t reach him, but we’re told to believe he’s just off for a hike for several days after a “bruising” legislative session? If the job is too “bruising” for the guy, maybe he should step aside.

How would reporters know? All of them
are in D.C., marvelling at O’s ability
to swat flies and joining him in his
morning bows to the East, and his
off-the-cuff forays to the burger joints
and the ice-cream parlors. They also
know that Obama is, or will soon be,
“in charge of S.C.”

If I were his wife I would not have tried toreconcile with 4 small boys. It is not a good message for them, as they will be men. Good, that the Mrs. took the children and left the house. She deserves better and so do the kids… What was Daddy doing on Father;s Day?
