Mark Sanford gets his own chapter in the scandal management playbook with that raw and rambling performance today.
Will it work?
While no top South Carolina Republican has yet called for Sanford’s resignation, former GOP Chair Katon Dawson says they will come.
And just about every top Republican officeholder in Columbia has issued a tough statement slamming Sanford for leaving South Carolina in the lurch and lying about it.
But recent sex scandals offer Sanford some hope. Democrats like New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey, Eliot Spitzer of New York and Kwame Kilpatrick of Detroit were forced out. Republican Senators Ensign, Vitter and Craig all held on — at least for awhile.
