Beer Diplomacy Scheduled for Thursday
A White House official tells ABC News that Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Cambridge Police Sgt. James Crowley will have beers with President Obama Thursday at 6 pm ET.
"The president sees this as an opportunity to get dialogue going on an issue that's been historically troubling," senior adviser David Axelrod told CBS Sunday.
After saying the Cambridge police acted "stupidly, the president felt a responsibility to step forward and kind of cool the situation down," Axelrod said.

Interesting that Obama invited a White policeman to come to the White House for a beer. Why a beer? Why not an invite for cocktails or a glass of wine? Isn’t he projecting some sort of a “Joe six pack” stereotype?
I guess it could have been worse — the invite could have been for doughnuts and watermelon.

What is this dialogue and teachable moment I keep hearing about? That you can act however you want and everyone must accommodate your actions with no consequences? Because if they don’t you will brand them a racist? Or as I heard on NPR today – We (white people) are all prejudice deep down. We just need to be honest with ourselves and come to terms with it. I’m done with tip toeing around worrying if I’m PC enough. That’s what I’ve learned from 20 years of the race card trumping all – even the truth card.

Watched the CNN video with Crowley and his two African-American fellow officers. They were great. The lady said she wouldn’t vote for Obama again. Ha! Ha! Crowley hugged her after she spoke saying what a great cop he was.
The Cambridge cops appear genuinely upset that Obama has brought this kind of negative attention to them. I think they just want to do their jobs and see their families each night.
Gates should be ashamed of himself.

Beer and Bigotry
I would love to be a fly on the wall to see how Gates plays his hand. What do you say to your friend (POTUS) who defended you on TV only to discover your story wasn’t exactly straight. What do you say to the guy (Crowley) you publicly accused of being a racist only later to discover that the entire police force (including African American cops who were on the scene) support that guy’s side of the story and not yours? What do you say when you’ve been outted as a big fat racist and a liar? What do you say to the “post-racial” President who stuck his foot in it because of your lie and is now taking a huge hit in the polls and is seemingly way, way off message with his legislative agenda (health care)? What do you say to reporters when many people around this country think that while race continues to be an important issue you and POTUS just set us back about 25 years?
We’ll see Thursday night.

The thing is that I feel bad for Sgt. Crowley. He probably put himself in danger protecting the community, risking his life and his family future. He will never see the kind of money that Gates, Obama, and Rev. Wright have.

I’m not at all convinced at this point the President did make a mistake in saying what he did. I am withholding judgement on that till I have more of the facts.
We HAVE been told a couple of things FROM THE POLICE REPORT only.
The man was in his own home, provided ID, was upset and yelling, was invited to step outside by the policeman and was then arrested for yelling outside.
From what we’ve now been told about Mass. law, there is nothing illegal in what the man did – so his arrest for doing nothing illegal might well be considered ‘stupid’. Which is what the President called it.
We might learn more about this situation which might tip it one way or the other.
The President then moved into a GENERAL statement about racial profiling – which certainly has been an issue in the U.S. and one that the President chose to highlight. Was he right in highlighting this issue? Perhaps. It certainly has provoked a lot of talk about racial profiling and placed the issue squarely on the agenda. If that was his desire, it seems to have been effective.
As far as the overall impact of this incident, time will tell.

at some point the officer knew there was no crime, and Gates was ID’d and in his own home..
Why did the officer stay?
there was no crime and no danger at that point…..the big guy with the gun had a point to prove against an unarmed citizen in his own home….. Gates was arrested for no other reason than the cop didn’t like what he said long after the cop knew the facts.

Why is it that our president can apologize for all of the worlds woes on our behalf and can’t say “I’m sorry for jumping to conclusions before getting the facts?” That’s a little scary to me that he let “emotions” stand in the way of truth. I think Sgt. Crowley is having a dilema for the big Thursday event – what to wear. Should he come to have a beer in jeans and a T-shirt, a suit and tie, or an officer uniform with a gun and handcuffs, the same one used to render Prof. Gates quiet and possibly the same one Mr. Obama might sign his autograph on. But it has been said that elitists often wear suits while having beer.

“No police officer with any sense would turn his or her back on an out-of-control, ranting, aggressive person.”
______________________________________
You don’t know for fact any of what you just typed.
Surprising you would pass judgement without all the facts in. Nothing the man did was illegal.
We now know, the woman who phoned in the 911 call did not say there were two black men – when asked directly she said she wasn’t sure and that one man might be hispanic – nothing about black men. And she said several times it might just be the home owners and that they had suitcases with them. This is confirmed by the 911 tape recordings.
This woman also confirms she didn’t talk to the police officer at the scene – and yet we have this officer writing into his report that she told him at the scene there were two black men with backpacks.
So the truth of this story is still emerging.
In America you are not guilty until you’re proved guilty. All the facts are not in, nor confirmed.

How can someone be ranting, aggressive, and out-of-control while at the same time handing over his drivers license and Harvard Identification for proof that this was indeed his residence. Making up idiotic and unsubstantiated evidence is as bad as the police office falsifying a report and saying there were two black men seen breaking into the house when the 911 caller clearly did not say that. More and more this is looking like blatant racism instead of a mistake in procedure. While the office was in the home did he bother to notice pictures of the man, and family members spread throughout the house? Book knowledge without common sense is deadly.

President could have forwarded this letter instead of speaking to nation:
My Fellow American’s, Sgt. Crowley And Prof. Gates,
Please listen before you alter fates. Do not let one’s pride, Restart this great nation to divide. Look at what is happening in such a short time, What this is undoing is really the crime. All across America people are upset, Now I ask each of you what good will all this get? A learning lessons already taught, So many people’s mending has been for naught.
A man has risen to lead us all, Do not be a part of America’s fall. This is the year of our lord, two thousand and nine, So please do what you all know to be divine. One planet, one race, as one beating heart, The world may end some day, please do not be the start. We lead the world with freedom first, Do not let racism quench it’s undying thirst. To not enslave us all at last, Lets look forward away from our past. The mistakes we make and continue to do, Could spell the end of more then me and you, by bringing down our great nation, All of this for the sake of sensation. I ask you not to let our enemies see, such things may still live in the land of the free.
Yes America there is a change across our land. People are Worried that nothing is going as planned. I know it looks as if everything is turning out wrong. America has endured hardships before and again became strong. We have an advantage over the rest of the world, our nation stands side by side with our arms curled. As one we breath the air others can smell. Our freedoms a tale no other land can tell. Our strengths in unity given with free will. For though its forbidden , to protect it we will kill. In self defense only throughout our proud history. So why others seek to harm us is a true mystery. We open our boarders to all who exist. We die in their lands helping others to resist.
We have always supplied aide to those in need. America grew from an idea that all of its people should be freed.. Tyranny and oppression belong in the past. For to fight against freedom no enemy could last. No chains in the womb, our path to life. So let no one be able to cause another strife. No nation stands as America for freedom. Proven to our enemies as we soundly beat em. The light of America may flicker in some eyes, to them truth and justice, are nothing but lies.
Our fore fathers brought forward a race unseen on this planet for all time. One that believes that to deny freedom is a universal crime. So no matter the troubles that may come our way, The flag of America will gallantly lead the way. Together we stand, never to fall, so remember we are the greatest nation of all.
I love the different colors of man, We were created according to plan. So different and the same, All of us with our own name. Man and woman free to combine, To create new life is so divine. Able to mix and mingle, No one has to be single. Banding together to survive, I for one am happy to be alive. If we all looked alike it would not be nice, I’m so glad to be the only Sonny Rice.

The President enlight of the information received regarding this incident called it right on. I agree that the officer’s behaved stupidly. Without going through much of what was said about this case and situation, I would like to say that given what ever emotional state Professor Gates was in, it is the job of the officer’s to de-escalate before any on-scene call becomes a problem or bigger problem than could be handled if handed properly. I think the officer’s escalated what could have been dealt with humanely on their part and left knowing the dwelling was safe and documented the results of the response. This is purely a result of abuse of power on the officer’s part.
The Oreilly factor is a joke when discussing this matter on television. I expected less of an agressive tone and more of looking at the broad picture than the steady pointing the finger at the President.
As for the beer meeting goes, everyone involved probably needs one after all of this negative controversy.

The beer diplomacy stunt is nothing short of absurd. Obama, and Gates for that matter, are nothing more than racist morons. After listening to the released tapes the only, and first, one to bring race into the picture was Gates. The one who escalated the race card was Obama due to his pathetic answer on prime time television.
I personally think Gates and Obama should sit down for a beer and figure out how NOT to be racists!

The president wants to heap guilt on white America. Obama who has no black American roots did not suffer from the historic American treatment of Blacks. Indeed he benefited as a black from and affirmative action admission to Harvard Law. Gates, reverend Wright and Michelle Obama also lead privileged lives but have spend much of it heaping blame on whites. Neverthess, Obama (unlike Barbra Jordan) supports a cheap labor policy (consisting of high and even illegal immigration) that has limited wages an employment opportunities for American citizens (particularly Afro-Americans) and damaged the environment.
I not sure that Obama is the one to lecture us – and I am sure that will not stop him.

This will be a real test for Mr. Obama as the first post-racial president.
You have in Prof. Gates a perfect representative of the privileged black victim. Someone who has received much in this country, yet who detests it and his white fellow citizens.
You have in Sgt. Crowley the perfect representative of the working class guy, white, black, Hispanic, oriental, whatever, someone just trying to keep his head down, do a good job, and have a good life.
Mr. Obama, acting as peacemaker will try to mediate between them.
I wonder how the post summit news conferences and interviews will go.

Conservabots clearly do not have any concern about what is real and what isn’t. Where does this denial of reality come from? Not merely lacking a scientific method, but a clear preference for living in a world of their own construction, there is no means of proving a fact to a conservative. There simply isn’t an agreement that reality has any bearing in a discussion.

Now Timmy, play nice with Flash. You’re just a confused, crazy kid! We all know that liberals are a reality based community. There are many examples of this like public education, environmental policy, foreign policy, and “making sacrifices” in general:
Liberals love public ed, but in reality they send their children to private school.
Liberals are all about AGW, but in reality, they use Gulfstreams, have giant electric bills and never build those windmills off Cape Cod.
Liberals are against wars, but in reality, they have supported and expanded the war in Afghanistan. Still in Iraq too.
Liberals want others to make sacrifices, but in reality enjoy Wagyu steaks at Inaugural events, $500 shoes and expensive handbags. Sacrifices are for Other People…

IMO, the real “teaching lesson” would be if Michelle and her daughters invited the children to go on a romp w/Bo. That, and ONLY that, would impress me.

–good description of our ‘good christian’ republicans–
An excellent point. There is much to be learned from men like Bill Clinton, Jessee Jackson, Ted Kennedy and Barney Frank.

we should really find out what’s going with the ‘christian theocrats’ who are attempting to take over the government… they believe that an invisible being chose them to rule the world..their allegiance is not to the United States…
Michelle Bachmann, lets ask her..

timmy
.. go back a few years and examine the fraud republican christians who despite their ‘less government’ individual freedoms, we want you to decide medical treatment for your own family rhetoric, decided to intervene with the Schaivo family and legislate morals and medical care based on christian dogma, ..
those ‘get the government off our back’ tea party type folks didn’t really care about that because Republicans were doing it….
but then… republicans do nothing wrong,

sounds like you’ve correctly condensed the republican ‘health care’ policy…… ‘do nothing & claim the end of the world’ … well done

n the police report, filed by Crowley, he says he spoke with Whalen outside the home before he approached Gates’ house.
“She went on to tell me that she observed what appeared to be two black males with backpacks on the porch of Ware Street,” the report says. “She told me that her suspicions were aroused when she observed one of the men wedging his shoulder into the door as if he was trying to force entry.”
but Whalen says that conversation never happened..
so… why did Crowley lie and file a false report?

Could the upstanding officer Crowley be a ballfaced liar?????
Tell me it’s not so!!!
Move over Joe the Plummer. The Republican Party is actually seeking out a spokesman for someone who actually have a license in their profession.
But officer crowley supporters please explain the disconnects in the officers report and the 911 call?
Where was the irate screaming?
Where were the two blacks with backpacks?
Why did he need backup for an elderly handicap guy?
How does someone get arrested for exercising freedom of speech? A right the right wing is soooo soooo fond of?

You can worship anywhere.
And maybe Obama would be respectful enough not to draw such attention to another and prompt Oreilly and Hannity’s minions out harassing parisoners on the sick and shut-in list like they did at Trinity United in Chicago.

America is waking up finally.

And also those “Blue Dog…. Blue Cross democrats who are obstructing the most important bill in history need to be voted out too.

Is it possible she is lying? Is it possible she does not remember the events accuratly? She said she never told the 9-1-1 dispatcher what color they were, did she also say verbatim what she told the officer when he arrived on the scene?

“You can worship anywhere.”
But doesn’t God encourage corporate worship? Doesn’t God want Christians to worship with their brothers and sisters in Christ?
“And maybe Obama would be respectful enough not to draw such attention to another and prompt Oreilly and Hannity’s minions out harassing parisoners on the sick and shut-in list like they did at Trinity United in Chicago.”
So he’s the first President to ever go to church? News flash: He won’t be riding in on a donkey. I think if he can find a way to go on a date night, buy burgers, and takes his kids for ice cream, he can find a way to go to church. I think the secret service can handle it.

Can’t wait until Thursday. Somehow I don’t think this is going to break Mr. Obama’s way. And it is all about Mr. Obama, why else the White House venue.

Obama has no business getting in this. It is not the Presidents job to get into Local Law Enforcment actions. No matter who you are or your mood or anything, when you start getting loud and running your mouth around Law Enforcement you will loose.
This highly educated man acted as a 12 year old and lost.

Is Obama and his RACIST friend going to make a public apology to Sgt. Crowley? I think they should since they BOTH maligned him publicly. Anything else is NOT acceptable, IMO!

We know who one person who acted stupidly. Maybe Crowley was out of line, maybe Gates was. But for sure the President was. He even prepared for the question before the Presser and he puts out a judgement on the issue after he admitted he didn’t know the facts.
His mistake was making any comment at all. It makes Obama look very small.
But “hey, come on over for a beer and smile for the cameras”. This is one case where the administration is being transparent for a change.

To whoever is “Ripper” —
It’s none of your business how often Pres. Obama goes to church, or where he goes to church, or whether he goes to church at all.
We all have the freedom in America to practice whatever religion we choose, in any way we choose. We don’t have to kneel down to the “tyranny of the majority.”
Hooray for the founders!

Obama was against the war in Iraq on day one. Obama said Crawley acted stupidly on day one. Good judgement on day one! That is why HE’s the President and not the twits that make up false police reports like officer Crowley. Thank God for the tapes and Whalen’s press conference. Thank God for people like Gates who stand up for their rights and those of others.
