Biden Visits With His Son in Iraq
Sandstorms have grounded Vice President Biden here at Camp Victory today, so everyone’s coming to him instead.
Biden spent a couple of hours this morning getting briefed by the Commanding General here in Iraq, Ray Odierno, and the new Ambassador, Chris Hill.
After the meeting he told me the reports were more optimistic than he expected. Although there have been some bombings since US forces completed their withdrawal from Iraq’s cities on Tuesday, the violence has not spun out of control (yet) and Hill offered some hope for progress on the Kurdish front and integrating the “Sons of Iraq” (former Al Qaeda affiliates) into Iraqi security forces.
Biden will get the Iraqi view when he meets with Prime Minister Maliki later today and President Talabani (a Kurd) tomorrow.
A bonus for Biden on this trip: some family time. His son Beau, who is both Delaware’s Attorney General and an Army Reserve Captain serving with the Delaware National Guard here in Iraq, is billeted just a couple of minutes from Camp Victory, so the Bidens have enjoyed a mini-reunion.
For more on that, watch my conversation with Elizabeth Vargas on Good Morning America.
I’ll also have an extended exclusive interview with Vice President Biden Sunday on “This Week.”

Obama Avoids Questions on Contraception Rule
Wonderful . . . there’s many other fathers that would like to visit their sons in Iraq but they can’t fly in luxury at the taxpayers expense. Now, did this national joke accomplish anything worthwhile on this boondoggle?

Wonderful, Vice President Biden, was given opportunity to visit with his son in Irag. Both are serving our nation.
HAPPY 4th of JULY!

Guess Joe is doing the same that Sarah Palin was able to do when she visited the Alaska Reserves. Why complain? Both are public servants, carrying out certain responsibilities, and should be able to take advantage of such trips to see their sons.

I’m a Democrat, but I think Biden’s trip was more to see his son for the 4th of the July (at our expense) and the military briefings were the added bonus. Something wrong when the Vice President of the United States has to go TO his subordinates to get briefed instead of them coming to him.

I agree that it must be nice to go over there at our taxpayers dollars to see family. It ###### me off because I have family and friends currently over there and we cant just fly over there to see them. I sure dont have the money to do it but Biden did it on our dime and dollar.

When Bush went or Cheney went it was front page and all about God Country and Mother. But Biden goes and you say it is a boongoggle. Great. I really think some of us here in American should try to NOT be so shortsighted, and maybe just let some things go unsaid. You sound so cranky and so desperate. Just don’t act out all those terrible thoughts. Really it is getting old.

I am always amazed by some of these posts. The guy is the VP – it’s his job! Sure, he gets a benefit to see his son. You armchair quarterbacks are free to don some body armor, a Kevlar, and an M-4 and do your part.

um, did all you right wingers notice that we just pulled out of the major cities this week. Is is really such a bad thing that our VP went over to check and see how the transition went? And so what if he got to see his son. I was over there and I would have loved for my father to come over. But I would have not been jealous if someone else got to see their dad and I didn’t.

Ol’ G.W. COMPLETELY “DODGED” the Vietnam War by having his father pull strings to get him into the Texas Air Guard instead… and you’re complaining about this trip by the VP? I’m sure the G.H.W. Bush visited G.W. Bush in Alamaba, when his son was campaigning there instead of attending his required drills………… Stop sounding like a “sore loser”, get over it!

I’m in the military, stationed in Germany, but just came back from my second deployment to Iraq. I’m proud that we finally have a Vice President who has a son serving our country in one of these two wars, unlike the previous administration, their strategic decisions now have a more “personal” impact on their families. Way to go Bidens (father and son)!

X-Republican Because of Bush is a liar. I just did a WHOIS check on his two posts and they MOST DEFINITELY NOT from Germany. Good try. You folks just can’t get through your thick skulls that you all elected someone that will destroy this country before his term is up. Just goes to show that most American voters are straight up troglodytes.

I tell you what Mr. “Right-Weiner”…. you post on here EXACTLY how you could verify who I am…. and if you do that, I’ll post my home phone number here in Germany so that anyone can call to verify that I am an American service member in Germany. How about that loser SChaos? Is that a challenge your willing to take?
These “right-weiner” (“losers”) are so upset that the past 8 years of Bush/Cheney produced nothing but a destroyed economy and a nation that they left $11 Trillion in debt….. they can’t fathom the fact that their entire party was voted out of office during the last two elections. What a bunch of bitter Americans….this man has given 28 years of his life serving the country in the government and has done a great job. So what if he had a few gaffs, it cannot take away all the years of hard work and sacrifices he has made to serve our country. I am happy he has the opportunity to see his son while many of you are complaining. His son could have gotten out of going to Iraq and chose not to. How about being an good American and be happy that the men are finally coming home and hoping they will be greeted with dignity and the respect they deserve. Hopefully, maybe a parade. This is the 4th of July…let’s put our political nonesense aside just for one day and fly our flags and celebrate the end of this war.
Posted by: talmag | July 3, 2009, 1:16 pm 1:16 pm
AuntMisBehaving…. I completely agree with you. Beau Biden could have very easily skipped out of this war because of his civilian responsibilities and also because of who his father is. But, unlike the “fast one” that the Bush’s pulled for G.W. to avoid Vietnam, the Bidens sent their son as thousands of American families have done with their sons and daughters. I salute the Biden family for that.

How COMPLETELY clueless you are about the type of warfare that is going on over there. THERE IS NO “FRONT LINE”! In April 2008, two outstanding officers were killed in a gym in the Green Zone when a rocket fired from Sadr City landed dead center on top of that U.S. facility.
Mary Ann, your comment was not only insensitive to ALL our service members serving there (whether they are clearing a village or sitting in the Green Zone)…. but it also demonstrated your ignorance of what is happening in Iraq.

Mikef1775…. TOTALLY agree with your comment. We finally have an administraton member (the VP) who has a son or daughter serving in one of the wars, and all these pathetic right can do is bash him for visiting his son while he’s on an official trip to Iraq. It’s this kind of mentality from that party’s membership that made me an “X-Republican”…….. they are more concerned about their party’s ideology, than they are about the good of the country as a whole.
Posted by: X-Republican Because of Bush | July 3, 2009, 2:25 pm 2:25 pm
Not at all insensitive. I have a son in law in US Army who has recently returned from second tour in Iraq . First deployment was 17 months during which time his daughter was born in Germany . Second deployment was 13 months in command of a unit at a FOP ( forward operating base ) . When he deployed for second time he left his 4 year old daughter and a 5 month old daughter at home with his wife . He is a career soldier , not part time. He has not been in the news or on TV applauded for his sacrifice . He is simply a patriot. Insensitive , I think not .
Posted by: Mary Ann | July 3, 2009, 2:31 pm 2:31 pm
Mary Ann….. First of all, I salute your son-in-law for his service to our country.
Second, I too served two tours in Iraq. The first tour OIF-1 (March 2003 to 2004) I led part of my brigades ground vehicles (108 vehicles of an aviation brigade) from Kuwait all the way to Mosul, Iraq. So, I was out there in what you would wrongly consider “the front line”. As I said, there is no “front line” in these wars… its an asymetrical battlefield.
On my 2nd deployment, I served in the Green Zone in Baghdad and was there when the Green Zone was regularly receiving indirect rocket fire from Sadr City, and when the two officers were killed in the gym from one of those rockets.
One of the officers that was killed in the gym also served with me at the beginning of the war (2003) when his national guard unit was activated then and attached to our division. My point is….. it doesn’t matter if you’re serving in a FOB (there are “FOBs” in the Green Zone also), or if you are on a convoy moving the hundreds of miles from Kuwait to Mosul… either way you are putting your life on the line.
By the way Mary Ann…. the term “FOB” is just another way of saying base camp. Your son served at a “FOB”… exactly the same way that Bo Biden is serving in a FOB as a lawyer.
Lastly, although I am active duty… your tendancy to “downplay” the service of our National Guard and Army Reserve’s contribution to this war (i.e., your comment, “He is a career soldier , not part time.”) is absolutely dispicable. As an active duty officer, I’m grateful and SINCERELY appreciative of the humoungous sacrifices our guard and reserve components have made to this war. Some reserve/guard units have already been over there 3 or 4 times, just because of their unit’s particular skill set…. so in a sence, they have contributed more to our nation’s efforts than Bo Biden, your son, or I. We have ALL done our part and you shouldn’t distinguish between “career” and “part-time” soldiers….. we are ALL professionals whether we are active or guard-reserve.

Both Bush and Cheney made sure that, when they were eligible to fight for our great country, that they stayed way behind the front lines (at home on American soil). Go Vice President Biden. I hope you enjoyed your visit with your son. I am as proud of your son as I am of you. You Rock!!

Mary Ann,
You owe an apology to every servicemember who ever put on the uniform. Whether you are in combat, in a combat zone, in the US or “in an office” you do your job. It’s not like you pick where you go, your orders are your orders. And will ALL have to take the oath to lay down our lives to defend and support the Constitution. Beau Biden didn’t have to serve, he voluntarily choose to do so. As for whatever political persuasion, gender, sexual orientation religion or none, I don’t care, as long as they back me up as a fellow member of the US Military. Some things aren’t as important in the a foxhole.

I certainly hope that at some point during his visit Biden/Maliki et al
are talking ways to help the pro-reform, anti-mullah people in Iran. also about Afghanistan and Syria and how
to put reform pressure on Saudi Arabia.
He should be talking to Ali Sistani and/or his people.
If the under-40 crowd in Iran can overthrow the mullahs, and the relative peace in Iraq today becomes a civil society, that will place enormous pressure on Egypt Syria and Saudi Arabia to reform as well.
I hope thats part of what VPOTUS is talking about today.

I’m really shocked that on the eve of this Nation’s birthday, that we are all so hateful toward one another.
Mary Ann, My son is leaving for basic training in 6 weeks. He’s 20 years old and we are preparing for him to possibly be deployed. Just because some are full time and some are part time doesn’t mean that my son is any less of a soldier than yours. No, he doesn’t have a wife and kids, but he has two parents and 12 yo brother and 8 yo sister.
To all you Obama haters…GET OVER IT!!!!!!!!!! You’re not even giving him a chance. Bush was awful, on Iraq, the economy, and much more.
So what if Biden visited with his son, so did Sarah Palin. Are you all that hateful that you would deny a man the opportunity to share a few moments with his child? Give me a break already! That’s just cold hearted.
I am going to enjoy the Fourth of July tomorrow because as a women, I am allowed to vote. As an American, I am allowed to worship how I see fit. I will sing our national anthem with my hand over my heart and in 6 weeks I will bid farewell to my little boy for 4 months and his father and I will again tell him how proud we are while secretly we pray that he won’t be deployed, and if he is, we will put on poker faces and again bid him farewell. We will prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
Instead of spewing hate tomorrow, remember why we are so lucky to be Americans. Republicans and Democrats may be different but we are all Americans first.

It seems most comment-posters are Cheney Chickenhawks parroting the GOP Talking Points Memo on What to Say About Biden’s Trip to Iraq.
Biden can talk directly to the President and bring first-hand observations, and his trip makes a show of support for the troops.
Biden’s son is doing something every major Repub from Dubya on down have never done: serve out his time in the military.

I have no issue with the VP going to Iraq. No issue with a VP visiting a son or daughter who is deployed while they happen to be there.
I do have a problem that there still has been no retraction of statement, no apology for our current VP saying a few years ago that the war in Iraq was “lost”. A no win. Well, he gets to see it with his own eyes. It would have been a much different place to visit had the United States Policy at the Time been in line with Joe’s (and all of his other cronies) ideas of “winning”. “Pull out an leave” I believe is a fairly accurate summation of the Dems Party line at the time. I am a democrat and they lost me then. I will never forget that cowardly, despicable display as long as I live. It was disgusting. It was not the current administration’s policies that achieved so much in Iraq.
The Democrats policy and party line at the time was one of almost overt and complete capitulation with the enemy. Encouraging the enemy to continue their ruthless acts against the Iraqi population as well as our deployed service members. All because they hated the seated president. Those in glass houses should not cast stones.

I have been at Camp Victory, if Biden’s son is just a few minutes away, he lives in Saddam’s area, or lets say bed dooms that one can play tag foot ball in. Saddam had about a dozen, rock shacks built in the 30 years that he was in power. One is reported, “an is” bigger than the US Capital, plus grounds! And come on, you have to know that tax dollars don’t pay for us, but for the non govt agency that set it up and runs it…ANYWAY, Joe Biden has done more for any troops and their families than the previous admin put together…he stood with the grieving families in the secret hangar that gwbush would not let the public see when the bodies came home…3 am or 3 pm when a family called biden, he was there. before bhutto was assasinated who did she call? Biden, because he was the best negotiator for the troubles in pakistan…so lay off the …until you know more, it is just hot air…

“he stood with the grieving families in the secret hangar that gwbush would not let the public see when the bodies came home”.
When? (secret hangar? HUH? they are not secret) those rules were not put into place by GW bush. They have been in place for the media to not mob the families of the fallen since the gulf war. The rules now are at the discretion of the families. You mention Joe going to be with families, bush visited plenty of soldiers and their families without the press present to exploit the moments.
Bhutto called…was this Joe relating this story? Where is your source?
Look, to me, Obama is just the next guy up to the plate as was Bush, as was Clinton, etc. I did not vote for Obama, I did not vote for Bush. I voted, I always do, just not for them. They are all the same human being to me in an office in an incredibly difficult job. I don’t believe in Monday morning quarter backing much either. The comments here make me seriously concerned for the mental health of some. From the Bush (Palin) Derangement syndrome to the all praising “don’t you dare criticize my president”…to the people slamming in all directions.
