If a Teleprompter Falls in the White House Does It Make a Sound?
ABC News’ Sunlen Miller and Jake Tapper report:
If a teleprompter falls in the White House, does it make a sound?
Yes, especially when it’s the President’s teleprompter – or TOTUS as it is often referred to.
Midway through his speech on urban and metropolitan policy in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building this afternoon, one of his two small glass prompters came crashing down, hitting the wood floor and crashing in many pieces. It made quite a ruckus.
“Oh, goodness,” a startled President Obama said. “Sorry about that, guys.”
He then proceeded on with his remarks, “To pull our economy back from the brink, including the largest and most sweeping economic recovery plan in our nation’s history…”
For the rest of the speech the president relied on the one remaining teleprompter, to his right, and notes on his podium to finish his speech.
Shards of glass remained near the president’s feet for the duration of his speech.
The President’s fandom for his nearly omnipresent prompter has become something of a joke, even to him. In May at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner the President poked fun at himself, declaring that he wanted to “speak from the heart” and “off the cuff.”
Two large teleprompters then rose, with a big smile from the President, and laughs from the White House press corps.
Prompter problems also recently plagued Vice President Joe Biden as well. During a commencement address in May to graduates of the Air Force Academy, a gust of wind knocked over his teleprompter.
The VP took the opportunity to crack a joke at his boss’s expense.
“What am I going to tell the president when I tell him his teleprompter is broken?” Biden joked, “What will he do then?”
Of course, television reporters and anchors never become over-reliant on teleprompters. Never happens. Nope. Never.

Today’s reminder why Republicans like Newt Gingrich are great on TV for right wing lunatic audience to hoot and holler about but a bad idea to actually let govern.
Think Progress covering an interview for Al Jazerra given by Gingrich
“Al Jazeera’s Avi Lewis told Gingrich, “In the past, you’ve called for the bombing of Iran’s oil refineries.” Gingrich clarified, “I called for sabotage, not bombing. … Fundamental difference.” Gingrich explained that the U.S. should use “covert operations” against Iran’s refineries because they “have only one refinery that produces gasoline in the entire country.” (According to the Energy Information Administration, Iran has nine refineries operated by the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company.)
When Lewis pressed Gingrich on the likely disastrous consequences of “sabotaging” Iran’s oil refineries, the former Speaker responded by claiming his plan was highly “strategic”:
GINGRICH: The only purpose of sabotaging them would be to create a gasoline-led crisis to try to replace the regime. I’m against using tactics that don’t have any strategic meaning.
I think we have a vested interest – the world has a vested interest – in a responsible Iranian government. […]
LEWIS: Which you can precipitate by provoking a gas crisis with black-ops sabotage? [Laughs] That’s the scenario you have suggested here.
GINGRICH: Look, I think that’s one piece out of many.”

Ryan_C, can’t speak for the right wing, but those of us in the middle are very dissappointed in what you characterize as “…their new hero Ricci getting exposed as a fraud ala Joe the Plumber’s helper?”
I think attempts to smear Mr. Ricci are pathetic, as were the attempts to go after Joe the Plumber. So did Mr. Ricci not actually pass the qualifying test? Of course he did. Did he not lose out on promotion because that test was thrown out because there were not enough minority firefighters who passed? Yes, he did. Those are the only facts that matter to the case. Whatever else has happened in his life is not germane to the lawsuit, and I find it sad that you would crow about the attempt at personal destruction that the left (since you love to put things in right vs. left terms) is pushing here.
Why trash Mr. Ricci? Does that really help promote Judge Sotomayor? No. She will be confirmed and so far, it does not look like the Republicans IN CONGRESS are the ones who are wallowing in the mud. They are prepared to confirm her absent a ‘melt-down’ as Lindsey Graham put it today.

Matt claims, “It is incredibly idiotic and disrespectful for the media to continually talk about our president’s perfectly average use of a perfectly common-place device. A device used extensively by George Bush, Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck…”
But, Matt, none of the people you named use the device as extensively as our current president. That’s the point. There’s nothing wrong with using the teleprompter in many instances, as for example, when one is making an acceptance speech in front of a Greek-temple-cum-White-House setting in a Colorado stadium or maybe when addressing Congress and a wide television audience in a State-of-the-Union speech.
But Obama uses it in all sorts of settings, to a degree that even his VP Joe Biden has joked about, as has the president himself. He has it dragged out in all sorts of places during the campaign, even to a rodeo ring and to numerous factory floors. He has used it to announce cabinet secretaries, a brief set of remarks, only to have the appointees whip out their notes and make an old-fashioned speech after his introduction. He not only uses it for speeches of over a half hour but also for remarks of five minutes.
Back in March, Politico ran a story about Obama’s “safety net: The Teleprompter,” which included the following which makes the point of why this is a problem quite well: “Before Obama entered a room in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building on Wednesday to announce his crackdown on defense contracts, a CNN reporter asked an Obama aide if the teleprompter could be moved further away from the podium or lowered. The answer was an unequivocal ‘no.’
‘He uses them to death,’ a television crewmember who also covered the White House under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush said of the teleprompter. ‘The problem is, he never looks at you. He’s looking left, right, left, right — not at the camera. It’s almost like he’s not making eye contact with the American people.’
The teleprompter puts distance between the president and his audience. It is cumbersome and causes problems for photographers and camera people. It creates distractions when it malfunctions or moves too slow or fast. Yes, others have used teleprompters, but never to the degree that this president does.
Oh, and I checked the Drudgereport, since you asked. Nope, don’t see anything about the teleprompter breakdown on it. Guess it was just a case of, oh, maybe that fact that Mr. Tapper witnessed the event that prompted him to write about it.
Is this junk off of Drudge, or what?

TCTimmy suggested, “Hey Jake, please ask the Telemprompter In Chief why his Car Czar who knows nothing about selling cars suddenly resigned” Never fear, Timmy, the new czar also knows nothing about selling cars but he is a good union man, so he’s perfect for the job, since protecting the unions is apparently the top priority of the automobile industry bailout.

Nvassar,
Could you explain why reading off notes is preferable to a teleprompter?
Certainly, Nvassar, notes are not a word for word script, they are “notes” a series of bullet points as an aid to memory.
Not a replacement for a functional memory.
I would dearly love to see the one accept a debate only to be told as he walks on stage that there will be no teleprompters allowed.
One can dream.

It was staged. The media mentions that he cannot make a speach without a teleprompter, then mysteriously a teleprompter that was bolted to his podium suddenly comes off and breaks thereby giving an oportunity to show that he can actually remember what he wanted to say. Which leads us to ask: Does the audience prefer the Obama double-head-swivel, or, now that they’ve seen it once, the Obama head-fixated-to-the-right speech variety?
2nd Q: How many people in the American public assume the Obama-double-head-swivel is just Obama lookin from side to side in the audience, and don’t realize its really the Power of the TOTUS over Obama on display?
3rd Q: How many folks, seeing his prime time speech thought “Hey, he’s broken the Power of the TOTUS, Obama’s the victor over the dominion of the TOTUS, and he’s finally looking AT the camera, so people will feel like he’s actually looking at them! Unfortunately, folks in this catagory simply don’t realize it REALLY was the ultimate TOTUS victory over Obama on display: They thought NO TOTUS when in reality it was The Mega-Daddy-54-inch-TOTUS having come out to play, right UNDER the camera. It captured Obama’s FULL UNDIVIDED attention, something the twin TOTUS’s never quite managed.
4th Q: How many people haven’t ever consciously noticed the Obama-metronome-double-head-swivel-avoid-lookin-at-all-us-out-here, and never dreamed he was relying so exclusively on the TOTUS?
4th Qa: Of that segment, how many never noticed because they’re too busy worshipin’ The One? and,
4th Qb: How many never noticed because they just don’t care and don’t watch The TOTUS And The One Show?
p.s. 5th Q of a sort: Wonder if TOTUS is keepin up ITS blog? and, YES, he has one!
mebbe we should have an online poll.

Totus can’t hold up such heavy unemployment numbers.
Unemployment 6.3% on the day Obama is elected.
Immediately employers start letting people go.
Today, unemployment is 9.5%.
Employers will not invest in the future, when that future has a socialist President Obama.
Even dopes like Mike Allen at the Politico seem to think that the Stimulus will really go into work in 2011.
Really?
In 2011, Obama and his fellow Democrats will allow the Bush tax cuts expire causing every American to pay higher taxes. Small businesses will be especially hurt.
Obama will be crushed in 2012 because he is doing the exact opposite of what Bill Clinton did.
Obama is Jimmy Carter Part II.

Obama absolutely needs to be continuously fed his script – he is jamming the most anti-American policies down the throats of “we the people” – and EVERY WORD has to be carefully prepared – otherwise the truth might slip out – like “my aim is to pay back all my fund raisers”, “I will take care of all the far left groups that want me to be certain to share the wealth”, “I must stay on course to socialism”, “I must do everything possibly to backrupt this country and its selfish people” – something like that might slip out.

Harlowe Thrombey: Drudge readers are able to do their own reading, conduct their own research, form their own opinions, actually speak without notes, and do NOT need the RNC to tell them what to think or say, HOW can you refer to them as robots?
IN FACT, YOUR SIDE: -> believes that the Saturday Night Life “jokes” were actually the words of Sarah Palin (can’t tell truth from fiction), believes there are 57 States, believes that the USA liberated Auschwitz, believes that Michelle Obama got her $300,000,00+ job (that was abolished when she quit) on merit, believes that Obama is an actual citizen of the USA, believes that it is possible to ‘spend your way into prosperity,” believes that NEVER writing a single piece of legislation equals “experience” in the US Senate, believes that 134 “present” votes is the same as doing an effective job in the Illinois House, believes that it is possible to go to Columbia, and Harvard and get an affirmative action law degree and travel the world without any money, believes that Sotomayor did not say what she said, and that she is not a Left-Wing Hack who also received an affirmative action law degree (third rate, no better than no degree at all which is why she has been overturned more than 60% of the time), and also believes that Obama’s lies don’t matter, and that obtaining 96% of the black vote does not equal racism, . . . . . well, it would appear that YOUR side is the one that is filled with brainless robots.

How many teleprompters have to die because this man cannot utter a coherent sentence on his own?
Posted by: DaRAH | July 13, 2009, 9:37 pm 9:37 pm
Nvassar asks, “Could you explain why reading off notes is preferable to a teleprompter?” Yes, I can. A speaker using notes usually does not have the entire text before him/her. At least, when I lecture, I use notes that guide me and keep me on track but that are not a complete speech with all the words intact. Why? Because that way, you do not come across as so wooden. You are engaged with the audience as you speak to them, focusing on what you are saying rather than simply parroting the words projected on the screens.
Also, when one speaks from notes, one looks up frequently and makes eye contact with one’s audience. When I speak from notes, I make eye contact with dozens of students before I glance back down at my notes. Sometimes I will speak for ten or fifteen minutes before I glance back down at my notes, when I am dealing with particularly familiar material. You will notice that the president, on the other hand, has a sort of hypnotic ping-pong match rhythm to his head turns as he moves from looking at the left prompter screen to the right and then back again. He does not look past the screens to engage his audience– although it may appear that way to a television audience.
Now I know that the president is at a disadvantage because he must speak publicly so often. He needs some sort of notes for most appearances, but it would be preferable for him to use notes in front of him rather than the prompter for most events.

It’s always interesting, but not a bit surprising, to watch the stark duplicity between the way the dominant media side show freaks handle a goof up of a liberal vs. one of a conservative. Even if a Conservative doesn’t screw up, it is often spun that way and then harped and harped on incessantly. For America to save itself, it needs to realize that the liberal media is the worst enemy in this nations history.
The newspapers, for example, deserve what’s happening to them; and the bailouts as campaign payoff should stop. If anything, they should be taxed more heavily in a cap and trade arrangement. The newspapers, with rare exceptions, like the Wall Street Journal, are far more toxic to the environment than CO2.

What do the right wing think of their new hero Ricci getting exposed as a fraud ala Joe the Plumber’s helper?
Posted by: Ryan C | Jul 13, 2009 5:49:10 PM
============
You have GOT to be kidding. Unless something really bad has come out in the last day or two, Ricci sure hasn’t been exposed as a fraud at all. Not to mention, THE SUPREME COURT RULED IN HIS FAVOR and they had ALL of the pertinent information for that case. Anything beyond that is just one more attempt at distraction by ripping some poor smuck to pieces, who was already treated grossly unfairly, took years to get justice, and in no way deserves to be ripped up by those unhappy with the verdict after the fact. Not to mention, he wasn’t the only one who won with that verdict, there were what, 16 plaintiffs. Are they “all frauds” too? Ricci was found to have been unfairly discriminated against by the Supreme Court, period.
Not to mention that although it was a close decision, ALL NINE of the Justices said Sotomayor acted improperly in having summarily dismissed his case as she did. UNANAMOUS ON THAT ASPECT, AGAINST SOTOMAYOR. Not to mention that during her tenure on the appeals court, Sotamayor’s cases were overturned by the Supreme Court MORE THAN 60% of the time.
You gonna blame that on Ricci personally too?
As to Joe the Plumber. He wasn’t exposed as a fraud at all. It still blows my mind that liberals/Obama fanatics keep trying to spin it this way. Obama showed up in JOE’S driveway, and ASKED Joe if he had a question, take your shot Joe. Joe didn’t go looking for Obama. Joe posed a perfectly legitimate scenario and asked how Obama’s tax plans would affect someone in that scenario. Obama replied he’d be taxed more heavily and rationalized it with “spread the wealth around” and help everyone beneath him.
The media and others who strongly supported Obama, to try to distract from Obama’s honest but badly out of line with typical American values, promptly began to try to tear Joe to shreds personally. WHICH HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE QUESTION JOE ASKED OR OBAMA’S ANSWER.
I can’t believe people are still at it.
They went so far as to ILLEGALLY dig into a number of different supposeldy secure databases, just to try to find ANYTHING personally harmful to Joe’s reputation.
About the stupidest claim I’ve heard along these lines is “His name isn’t even Joe!” Excuse me, folks, but there ARE people out there who, their entire lives, use their MIDDLE name rather than their first name.
Close up there was the “He’s not even a plumber!” Except, of course, that WAS his occupation, and it WAS how he was earning his living at the time. Before some one jumps to the “He wasn’t licensed!” number, ya, he wasn’t, and where he was working IT WASN’T REQUIRED LEGALLY. All that was required for Joe to be a plumber was for his BOSS to be licensed, and he was, so Joe was a plumber.
Then people drop down into the fact that there was an outstanding tax lien on him. Ya? So what? He owed some money perhaps, or perhaps the lien was improper and he was in the process of fighting it, who knows, who cares? It has NOTHING to do with the scenario he asked Obama to address. Let alone his right to ask Obama a question.
Ever hear of Timothy Geithner? Joe supposedly owed what, about $5K? Geithner owed more than 30 times that, $150K or $180K so something, AND Geithner had to sign papers annually acknowledging that he owed and had paid those taxes, AND HE GOT PAID EXTRA MONEY TO TOTALLY COVER THE AMOUNT HE OWED EACH YEAR. Or
how about 3/4′s of all of Obama’s appointee’s? Incredible number of them may not have had a lien, but they darned sure were found out to owe a lot MORE in taxes than Joe did. Personally, at least for the more egregious ones, I think they should have been disqualified right then and there. People in high office ought to meet a much HIGHER standard than the general public. How many American’s who have tax problems get to just pay the back taxes without further fines or even worse consequences? Yet these guys did — what happened to no one is above the law?
So Ryan C tries to distract from facts by falsely ripping into two guys who clearly don’t deserve the slander, all because they showed someone Ryan champions in a bad light. Nice.

Although he is the President of The United States, honored as such but, respect is to be earned. When you go and put the Country more in debt than it already was, you are not part of the solution, you and the Dumbascrats are the problem. Actually Pelosi is the biggest mess, not Obama.
We already knew that Obama couldn’t say a speech without a prompter before, and you morons drone on about Bush.
Bush, although he had some brain farts was one who could speak from his heart and proved that when he spoke at Ground Zero. That speech brought the Country together.
To me all Obama has done is make a lot of empty promises and like any Democrat his printed more money than we have.

Unfortunately the Teleprompter had switched parties from Democrat to Republican.. when it realized the predicament it was in .. it did the only honorable thing and comitted “suicide by floor”. Burial in 3 days, send electronic flowers to its widow – a 42 inch Plasma in the executive office. Its children, a 6″ B&W in the Secret Service lounge and a 16″ color in the Pastry Chef’s office mourn their fathers passing by changing channels continiously.

Rev wright, Father flager, ACORN, just to name a few. All radicals that don’t like our nation. What should we have expected? We only have the fools that voted for him to blame. Saving James Bond 007 or A SHATTERED TELEPROMPTER?
If the CIA falls does it make a sound?
Sounds we hear now about the CIA – C.I.A. Had Plan to Assassinate Qaeda Leaders?
- Doesn’t make sense osama and Qaeda Leaders are in Pakistan supported by many in their intelligence.
- It would mean infiltrating tribal areas. A possible means to do it were elimated once they invaded Iraq.
- Neo cons inspired by a movie? Munich? Mossad shot their targets. The USA tortured their targets in safe environments and some died a few days later.
- The real story is in the renditions, those that tortured and those that disappeared. Its also about the outsourced contractors.
The real story is how the people who create the atmosphere and environment got away with this. President Bush gave himself and neo cons a free pass
and they smirked leaving our CIA intelligence to pay the price, some within the CIA would have been in on it, others disgusted by it.
The real heroes are those within the CIA that stepped forward to help us all understand how it happened.
Osama all 6’4″ of him beat Bush on Bush’s watch. Bush was a small minded shallow man who became President. President Obama is a lot smarter
then Bush. Qaeda Leaders know this.

Demetrius, you said you “would just like to take this opportunity to remind my republican countrymen that GWB used the teleprompter just as much as Obama.” But you are wrong. yes, Bush sometimes used a teleprompter, particularly for long speeches. He did not use it for short presentations, which was one reason he more often mangled words and uttered malapropisms. It is not just Republicans who have noted the president’s UNUSUAL reliance on the device– it has been covered by journalists numerous times, including the NYT, Politico, CNN, Today Show, etc.

This nation must turn away from this man who is only flesh and repent before God. This nation is about to come under judgement like it’s never seen in all of it’s existance and there is only one remedy. Every man, woman and child must go to their room and put their face on the floor and cry out and repent for all our many sins. Maybe God will relent His just judgements which he is about to release on us.

Nothing could be more symbolic than the timing of the teleprompter’s self-destruction during the President’s speech: “…pull our economy…*CRASH*”. Yes, to pull our economy into a crash, not to pull our economy back from the brink. The huge increase in the money supply that must result from the frightful debt now being run up can only have the inevitable effect of inflation, which is another word for confiscation of money from the people, as their dollars lose value. Those who borrow the money and those who lend the money know this perfectly well, and they also know the serious dangers of it. The teleprompter felt compelled to rebel at this fiscal intemperance in the only way it knew how, by waiting for the exactly apt words to be spoken and then falling over.

To all those who constantly claim that Bush is an idiot and Obama is so intelligent, well, I have watched Obama for over a year now and guess what, he is merely average. Sorry people, your savior, your messiah is basically of average intelligence. In fact, I will bet that Bush’s IQ is about the same as obama’s. Obama’s speech syntax is better, although he does stumble over his words, struggles without a prompter or script and whistles his S’s. Another way to tell is how often the lefties talk about his “intelligence”, that is called over compensation. You guys know Obama is not as advertised. Basically he is Jimmy Carter or FDR on steriods. i just hope he does not do too much permanent damage before the idiot middle class who put him in office wises up.

I too have noticed the speech quirk of Mr. Obama where he whistles his “S” sounds. He also uses a lot of um’s and and’s when he doesn’t have a teleprompter in front of him.
Is there some logical explanation of why this guy is so dependent on this goofy teleprompter? If this guy is so brilliant, why can’t he give a speech without this mechanical device?

Several people have commented along these lines. If you haven’t run across it, and I hadn’t until quite recently, look up “cloward-piven strategy” Its well known by those Obama was raised by and associated with throughout his life, as are Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals. I’d've never imagined or believed anything along those lines was even possible from anyone who made it to high office, if Obama’s actions didn’t match so blasted incredibly closely. The latest, less than 24 hours in Ghana, and in the middle of what HE claims is the worst recession since the Great Depression (its not, but he’s sure heading it in that direction incredibly quickly), Obama pledged $63 BILLION, that’s with a B, for either Africa or the world’s health crisis.
Um, what about AMERICA???

Bill, Hillary, McCain, Palin and many other politicians have had their teleprfompters fail mid-speech, yet each of them were able to fluidly continue speaking — because they knew the material and cared about what they were saying! Not the “genius” Obama. Oh, may this be an omen!

The major difference is that Bush was Cheney’s puppet with not much of a mind of his own.
Bush did not distinguish himself in any way as a student, ducked the Vietnam war, became an alcohol/cocaine cross user and was then propped up by his family and ‘given’ a portfolio of experience in oil and baseball by friends of the Bush family.
And as we know, Bush set a new record for amount of time spend on holiday by a president.

Even as a republican, I will support this man as he is our country’s president. Everybody makes mistakes. Obama is doing the best with the hand he was dealt. The fact that he can make light of it on the fly and get a pass is just par for the course. Teleprompters imo should be for constructing a list of talking points, that the orator can use to communicate details about them.
But not an entire speech.
I prefer the genuine thoughts of the orator, not some pre-prepared party line speech… every president should always be ready for detail oriented questions and answers. And most, including President Obama, succeed when this becomes necessary.
The press loves it, the people love it. So, I’m all for more crashing teleprompters! For all presidents!

First of all, its not at all just “the right” who are adamantly opposed to Obama’s policies and the direction he’s taking the country. Check out the polls, likely voters now at 53% approve of Obama, 46% disapprove. Ohio AND Virginia now at less than 50% approve of Obama. Those just the “do you like Obama Q’s” — numbers quite a bit WORSE when people are asked if they approve or disapprove of his POLICIES. Or try “direction of the country” realclearpolitics averages several polls, now showing:
Direction of Country
RCP Average
Right Direction 37.8%
Wrong Track 57.0%
Spread -19.2
In other words, the majority DO NOT LIKE WHAT OBAMA IS DOING.
As to the intelligent among us — we actually do our homework, look at the issues from the most non-partisan sources possible, with a smattering from both right AND left sources. We see how ridiculous it is to chant Bush and Cheney did it!
If I asked you HOW Bush and Cheney caused the economic meltdown, would you even have any sort of plausible reply? No. At least not without leaving out the HUGE contributions of Barney Franks, Chris Dodd, Pelosi, etc., and policies going as far back as at least Clinton, among other things.

I hope the President enjoyed his whirlwind tour around the world last week with his sightseeing tours in Russia, Italy, Africa, etc. while using the excuse of attending the G-8 summit. Meanwhile his wife gets to show off her designer outfits and $6,000 handbag which she changes hourly while she goes sightseeing with her kids and meets with world leaders wives and the pope.
Why doesn’t the media give us more coverage of this? (Instead we get 24 hour/7 day coverage of Michael Jackson who has absolutely no impact whatsoever on the lives of the American people for over 20 years.) Face it, the guy had issues. The president and his wife and kids are on European trips almost monthly. With trips to Africa and Russia thrown in. Most Americans have to sit at home and read about this on the internet. We want to see how we’re getting screwed by these people. Next month he’ll probably be on vacation in Martha’s vineyard or Hawaii while the most Americans are sitting home trying to figure out how to pay their mortgages, buy food and pay their gas and electric bills which keep going up due to taxes imposed on them. Then we have to hear from him about how we are burning too much CO2 and how we need to pay a cap and trade tax. Also we have to be lectured to by this clown about how we need to reduce our carbon footprints while he is bailing out Goldman Sachs, AIG, Bank of America and the rest of his Wall Street connections.
At least Bush had the sense to go to his boring ranch in TX and cut brush and give up golf. Our economy was fantastic under Bush due to the housing bubble compared to Obama. Obama can’t fix the economy all he does is talk. Meanwhile he is playing golf and enjoying himself every weekend while our soldiers are getting blown up in Afghanistan. The only thing he is accomplishing is giving speeches it seems. He can’t accomplish any of his goals while the economy is in total implosion. He’ll be a one term president because he won’t face the facts that we need to lower our corporate tax rate in order to attract multi-national business to the U.S. Our corporate tax rate is now the highest in the world I believe.

Plus:
Obama refuses to release ANY of his grades from high school, Occidental College, Columbia, or Harvard. VERY VERY unusual/odd also that they can’t find ANY authored papers or publications by him from any time period. Not the Harvard Law Review, not even while he was a part-time professor.
Bush VOLUNTEERED for duty in a unit expected to be called into the war shortly, in a position as a pilot, which at the time had a pretty darned high death rate just from flying, let alone flying in combat. Where John Kerry (I was a Vietnam Vet), was drug kicking and screaming and punted his way into an INACTIVE reserve unit, for a duty that would keep him far offshore. Oops, blew that one, the scope got changed, and he not only had to go over, but they sent him upstream. Bush may have set records for time away from the White House, but he was very well known for WORKING extensively with staff from both his ranch and Camp David.
I’m sick to death of hearing the repeated ‘short versions’ that grossly skew reality — and I don’t care WHICH ‘side’ is doing it.

The press use to rag on Bush on how he couldn’t talk, but once he was done speaking you know what his position was. Obama can give a great speech and when he is done people still scratch their head and wonder what he just said. The one thing I can say good about the Obama presidency is that the IQ of America is going up because the idiots that voted for him are finally smartening up. So tell me, how is that “Hope and Change” working out for you?

Obama relies on teleprompters at taxpayer expense.
mainly because when you took bushie off of teleprompter, he sounded like jeb.
obama has so many glottal pauses (um…er…ehh…ummm) that speech teachers nationwide are having a field day when he is off of eh tele screen.
Which is quite rare as we all know.
So…we all pay the price to have a leader who doesn’t stammer.

“And as we know, Bush set a new record for amount of time spend on holiday by a president.”

On holidays, this from the W.P.
CRAWFORD, Tex., Dec. 30, 2005 [365 days ALREADY!] — On most of the 365 days he has enjoyed at his secluded ranch here, President Bush’s idea of paradise is to hop in his white Ford pickup truck in jeans and work boots, drive to a stand of cedars, and whack the trees to the ground.
On military service . .
“Bush enlisted in the Texas Air National Guard on May 27, 1968, during the Vietnam War, with a commitment to serve until May 26, 1974.
“During the 1968–1974 period, Presidents Johnson and Nixon decided against calling up National Guard units for service in Vietnam. As a result, National Guard service was widely portrayed as a way to avoid combat. The waiting list for the Guard at that time was extremely long . . .”

Too funny. Where will we end up without TOTUS? Obama is a fraud and this is evidenced by each poll, each day.
From a big plus to a pretty good minus in under 6 months? Plus, pushing even more spending as investment flees the US?
Hear me. You will beg for the day he leaves office in under 12 months. The economy, what really matters stupid, will be in shambles.

“By regulation, National Guard pilots were required to take and pass an annual physical in order to remain in flight status, in the three months prior to a pilot’s birthday (in Bush’s case, July 6). For reasons that are unclear, Bush apparently chose not to take this mandatory physical examination in mid-1972, thus ending his pilot’s career. He never flew again after April 15, 1972.
“As a result of his failure to take his physical, his flight status was suspended by his commander on 1 August 1972, confirmed by Col Bobby Hodges on 5 September 1972 and confirmed again by a National Guard Bureau order on September 29, 1972, which meant he no longer was authorized to fly as a pilot.”

Where are you on the political chaos in Central America,

I wasn’t that keen on Bush, but I hate hearing unfounded smears repeated regardless of who its about, and even more so when it regards a US President.
From Washington Times, re Bush, about both any ‘evasion’ of risk, and proof that he was NOT AWOL:
The Washington Times

In defense of Lt. Bush
President Bush’s military service is being unjustly vilified. I feel a sense of anger and frustration when I hear that instead of volunteering for Vietnam, Mr. Bush “hid out” flying fighter/interceptor jets in the Air National Guard (ANG) for four years.
As a former Air Force pilot with 6,000 hours of flying time, including more than 3,000 hours in jet fighters, I know that whenever you strapped yourself into a jet fighter and took off, you were in harm’s way. Your life was on the line. …….My 1952 West Point class sent approximately 100 graduates to the Air Force jet pilot training program. We experienced five fatalities (5 percent)……From then until 1968, the year Lt. Bush joined the Air National Guard, we lost 10 more Air Force classmates, a 14 percent fatality rate. One was due to hostile action; eight were due to accidents. In total, we lost 18 classmates (18 percent) during our flying careers.
In contrast, of our 397 West Point classmates commissioned in the Army, 11 were killed in action or died in training accidents during their military careers, which included Korea and Vietnam. This is a fatality rate of 2.77 percent, versus the 18 percent fatality rate of the class of 1952 flyers in the Air Force.
Additionally, during the entire Vietnam conflict, Pentagon records show 3,403,000 military personnel served in Southeast Asia. The United States suffered 58,205 fatalities, a rate of 1.71 percent. Fatality rates varied substantially from unit to unit; nevertheless, over 98 percent of those serving in that conflict returned home.
Comparing these data, it is obvious that Lt. Bush, as a jet fighter/interceptor pilot in the Air National Guard, was more than twice as exposed to fatal danger than he would have been if he had taken his chances on an average tour in Vietnam. Most of his first two Air National Guard years were on active duty for training with the Air Force, undergoing basic training, flight school, survival training, combat-crew training, etc. Because the draft was for two years, he was not avoiding hazardous military duty being an Air National Guard pilot.
During the Vietnam era, guardsmen were required to accumulate 50 points to meet their yearly obligations. After training, Lt. Bush kept flying, racking up hundreds of hours in F-102 jets performing his squadron mission. According to his military records released this year, he earned 253 points in his first year, 340 points the second year, 137 points the third year and 112 points in his fourth year of duty. In other words, Lt. Bush showed up a lot, earning more than four times the required duty points in his first four years.
In Lt. Bush’s fifth year — which included parts of 1972 and 1973 — the Vietnam War was winding down due………When Lt. Bush requested a transfer to the Alabama Air National Guard for employment reasons, his superior officers granted this routine request. “In fact, you were helping them solve their [pilot glut] problem,” said Col. Campenni.
Since Lt. Bush’s Alabama Air National Guard unit did not have F-102s, he stopped flying. From May 1972 to May 1973, he earned 56 points — more than enough to meet his annual requirement. Since he would not be flying, there was obviously no need to take an annual flight physical, which some accuse him of avoiding. Then, from May through July 1973, Lt. Bush accumulated 56 points, enough to meet his minimum requirementsfor 1973/74, before requesting and receiving permission to attend Harvard Business School. It was not unusual for such requests to be granted. He received an honorable discharge after serving five years, four months and five days of his original six-year commitment — although he had accumulated enough points to cover six years of service…….
Brig. Gen. Charles D. Youree, Jr., USAF (Ret.) is former Strategic Air Command chief project officer for the B-1 bomber.

let’s face it, Obama is a poor public speaker. He cannot handle questions without a preprogrammed answer. During the campaign he skillfully aww’d and um’d his way to a changing the question into a prepared response, and the press loved it and bragged on his ability, ignoring the fact that he never answered a question. And now he blames Bush for everything, what a waste of a vote to anyone foolish enough to fall for his rhetoric. criticized Bush for going into Iraq with no plan for withrawal, and then he ups the troops in Afghanistan with no plan for anything, much less withrawal. Hypocrites won’t compalin now, will you liberals? he wants to rush everything through congress without any details known so the average American won’t be able to know what is going on. In the bailout he authorized bonuses and when the public was upset he blamed Bush for forcing him to avt so swiftly, then he blamed congress and congress blamed the administration (can’t blame the guy in charge he will sic ACORN on you). Amazing how many comments attack Bush, maybe you didn’t read the blog. Or are liberals so like sheep that they cannot change from campaign mode to see anything clearly. sheep or blind mice, not sure which but your ignorance is overwhelming. the guy is dangerous.

I am becoming very disillusioned about Obama.
He promised change, and change there is. However, it is change worse than what we had.
I know that I was better off 6 months ago then I am now…and it has only been 6 months. The stimulus is not working, nobody read the bill, and now it is being wasted while we, the taxpayers get the ‘other’ bill. And, they have the gall to offer another ‘stimulus’ for teacher raises while we lose our jobs!!!!!
ENOUGH!

Thanks for the big, wide target. Bush authorized 174B in bailout and a bank plan that allocated 750B spending just one half. Obama spent the other 375B + 768B in ‘Stimulus’ + guaranteed housing, banking investment and other notes to over 2 trillion? Not to mention auto bailouts, further AIG bailouts, etc. etc. This is Obama’s mess now. He spent the money, far beyond what Bush spent. The US has now run up a debt over 12 trillion with at least 20% on Obama in the last 5 months. Plus he has more spending on the table to issue….
Get over Bush will you? Obama just grew the federal deficit, by his own hand, more than all US presidents combined.

America very smartly elected one of the brightest, most capable men to hold the office of President – President Obama.
That was after 8 years of the Bush/Cheney regime who left office with somewhere around a 30% approval rating, and the country’s national debt doubled from $5 TRILLION to $10 TRILLION.
The current President faces a global economic crisis called the largest since the great depression.
Obviously, he should be able to snap his fingers and fix this.
Surely if those good, clean, honest Republicans were in office they could fix the economic crisis with one snap of their blessed fingers.
They sure did a good job of providing ‘smaller government’ last time they promised it under Bush and Cheney .. .. didn’t they?

Danita,
I know you are wide-eyed with wonder and Obama. A lot of us were.
Do the research. The 2004 Democratic majority ruled on relaxing mortgage lending laws and Bush was suckered into the “ownership economy’. Remember that? It was Barney Frank, Dodd and other that had Fannie and Freddie turn a blind eye to lending. That’s how shows like ‘Flip this House’ came into being. Add to that the influence Goldman Sachs had and has had on administrations to create new lending ‘instruments’ to sell this bad debt overseas. See the stock market today? Up 181pts. Why? because some ‘analyst’ upgraded Goldman Sachs. Guess what will happen in the coming weeks. Keeerrrrassssh…
That’s right, the markets will dive well over 1,000 points to a new low to wipe out more savings if you, me (well not me, I have a strategy), and many others.
Wake up and see how the economy, media and you are being manipulated.

I should add that Goldman Sachs was upgraded at the same time the US budget deficit hit 1 trillion dollars for the first time ever. And, we are expecting a poor earnings season this week.
Rembmer, it was an ‘analyst’ opinion that drove the market for GS and banks. Perhaps you remember how the ‘analysts’ drive the high tech stock bubble with false reports back in 2000?
Funny how these ‘analysts’ never have a name attached.

Danita,
Doing business in 130 countries, meeting and traveling around the world, and investing overseas I believe does, in fact, allow me to assert what it going on globally in commerce.
All these fronts Obama is pushing?
Attempting to do everything will succeed in accomplishing nothing. Obama knows that his time is limited before the wheels fall off. That is why he implores urgency.
Gotta sign it NOW!! or things will fall apart !! Don’t bother to read it !!
People are wising up. Obama is failing, even faster that some expected.
A shooting star if you will.
The Dow will test 5,000 in the next 12 months. Down 40% and taking your 401k with it. Plus, taxes are going up with your health benefits taxed as income, cap & trade energy tax (for what?), and a possible VAT that will tax every stage of production.
I see the mortage deduction tax credit on the table by 2012. Hope your paid up.
Hopefully you will wise up too.

First the demos had a majority in 2007 – current, second Obama has run up on his own with that congress a $12,000,000,000,000 debt, he has outspent the Iraq and Afghanistan war, which is currently at a billion dollars over the past 8 years. As far as the debt would go our country is given power to protect us, stop and defend our country, that is it. The Democrats HAVE failed, and so did the republicans. The Democrats now want complete control not just over the government but over your lives, they are power mad, and will destroy this country.

David,
Thanks for the big, wide target.

I was utterly horrified to read earlier this week that Obama now owns the controlling interest in companies that produce fully 1/3rd of our country’s economic output.

Danita,
Investments?
Gold (bullion and GLD ETF)
Short S&P (SH)
Family Dollar (FDO)
to name just a few. Sign of the times due to the rough times wa are upon, and devaluation of the dollar. Also investing in China.
With the forthcoming tax policy changes from the Federal government and devaluation and murky outlook for the ocnsumer economy domestically, many investors are seeking more fertile investments in Asia. China for example overtook the US the last quarter in auto sales. Yes, its true. Plus the overseas investment climate is much more favorable than the US right now. Obama favors measures approaching protectionism such as the ase with him going after the Swiss for UBS accounts. investors sense the direction the administration is taking and are reacting to it to place thier money in more profiitable places.

Why all the outrage about government spending? I didn’t hear you people complaining when GW Bush burned through that massive surplus Clinton left him, and then spent a trillion more attacking a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 while the culprits went free. Where was your outrage then? Where were the tea parties then? As long as it’s YOUR GUY spending the money overseas, you don’t utter a peep. Danita,
Glory years over? Not at all. Repaat, not at all.
It is just that there are mistakes happening which may never be undone (national healthcare like the UK where it sucks) and a loss of standing in the world due to our spending as emerging countries overtake us. This is worst case. However, the Healthcare overhaul, I believe will fail. And unless the economy rapidly improves by this time next year, the Dems will lose the majority. Check and balance. America adjusts.
America has hit a rough patch and the reaction to it was more knee-jerk, but lets face it, it is a hard solution to get it right. Obama tried, but I think he had bad advice from Geithner.

Danita,
The future of wealth in the US? Thanks for the softball :)
The future of wealth in the US must be compartmentalized:
Technology:
Health and Biotech, that is if the Federal Government doesn’t take it over
Factory and energy automation
Water treatment technology
Food science technolgy
Pharma: Life saving medications
Legal:
IP surrounding new inventiones and process and corresponding treatiese
Legal protection of inventions
Energy management:
though this is compeitive. Forget biofuel, this is about hydrogen and cell technology
Finance:
Instruments that got us into trouble in the first place but more refined and suitalbe for emerging economies. Only 1 in 60 in India has a credit card but with a savings rate upwards of 30%. As the std of living grows, so will the obligations.
Entertainment and tourism
So far as my crystal ball reads… :)

Danita,
The bogus argument we hear currently is Cap & Trade. I was at a mining customer last month who is already in the planning stages of moving the operation to Africa. So, how does moving the operation from the US to another country reduce climate change? It does not.
What cap + trade is, is a way to tax purportedly to reduce demand. While it may in the very short term do so, it alwo reduces US jobs, commerce, community support through taxes, state and Federal tax revenue, and US exports affecting GDP.
So, such a plan punishes small communities and governement equally. To what end? Once the operation moves offshore under less stringent but more affordable conditions, how does this help the planet?
Also note that Cap + Trade is a regressive tax. Taxes those who pay to heat their home. Passes on increased costs for those that are subsidized for heat to the taxpayer. Passes on the same taxes for every good manufactured in the US to the consumer, further reducing exports.
The plan is all wrong. It has not been thought out. It is simply a way to impose a tax in the hope of clear skies.

“Why all the outrage about government spending? I didn’t hear you people complaining when GW Bush burned through that massive surplus Clinton left him…”
What “massive surplus”? It was a projected surplus and I’m not clear on who came up with that. Actually President Bush inherited a mild recession and despite 9-11 both he and the Republican-controlled Congress provided the environment in which commerce thrived.
In the background, however, was Barney Frank, and Co. along with ACORN doing their social engineering thing with the housing market and that coupled with a Dem-controlled Congress…well, we all see where that lead…those that care to admit it anyway.
And no, we weren’t happy with all the spending under Bush. I can only guess that it was carried out because they believed that our GDP would continue to go up and unemployment would stay low. Besides, these Republicans still had to make deals with tax-and-spend Dems in Congress to support their Marxist programs, and probably to placate the Lib voters in their districts.

Gosh, you must work for ABC to keep up this thread, Your number appear below. However, only 10% of the ‘stimulus’ has been doled out. When asked why, a spokesman said that ‘the government is sluggish and inefficient’. Can’t wait then till they run healthcare eh/.
Find me the private sector jobs in those numbers. Looks more like state and local assistance, and subsidies, not JOBS.
Waste of money to buy votes. That is why most of the money will not be doled out until next year, an election year. Obama is holding out this money to grease politicians. However, his numbers are plummeting faster than he thought.
Nice try though.

That’s too bad, we were actually having a discussion and exchange of information about future directions, now you’re back into beating the old political drum.
“I’m cynical so I won’t discuss it” mode. “I won’t even consider how this program could help – I dismiss it outright”.
End of discussion of future; into “politicians are all bad so what’s the use”.
Too bad, it closes off the mind.

Doubt it. Never saw a computer until college and I ended up designing and bulding computer networks for 4, very large school districts.
Technology investment was not around, yet I did the network for venture capital, state and municipal office. Did the network for a dominent videoconferencing company and now do networks for global 100 in industry worldwide. Never saw a computer in high school. Didn’t know what they looked like or ever heard of them.
Invest in the fundamentals. Forget the technology that is aged in 3yrs.
Computer can’t help a kid that can’t figure it out on their own. Books, process and exercise are the tools, not expensive tech toys paid by the taxpayer. Don’t give me the learning jive either, what with all the online help and ‘intuitive’ interfaces put on software. Software today assumes everyone is an idiot. Besides, find me one kid that does not know how to send an SMS or an email and I will eat my hat, regardless of the ‘investment’ in school technolgy.

5.7 Trillion to 10.0 Trillion, but then, what’s 700 Billion dollars between friends? Its sorta funny to be emphasizing the debt increase during the Bush years, when in 6 months Obama has already quadrupled the deficit AND increased the debt the same amount it took Bush 3 YEARS to do.
Besides, during that same time period, 2000 to 2008, our gross domestic product skyrocketed. The amount of debt stayed within historical levels relative to our growth.
That’s now radically altered, the debt has another 2 TRILLION added in 6 months, while our GDP is contracting rather than expanding. The debt is important, although the publicly held debt more than total debt – and a far better measure is the public debt to GDP ratio.
You are right about one thing – Obama does keep claiming this is the worst recession since the Great Depression. As I’ve pointed out to you repeatedly, that patently FALSE. Or heck, with the past month job report, by now it may be at least in terms of unemployment tho not interest rates. I don’t know for sure where it falls in comparison now, but it certainly wasn’t the worst since the great depression for MONTHS that Obama & others kept trumpeting that scare mongering claim. If he doesn’t change his policies and fix the stimulus awfully quick, he’ll sure make this into the worst tho.
To compare gov. growth under Bush/Cheney to what Obama is already doing is laughable too.

What I see is so many Democratic Obama “PUPPETS!” Are they afraid to find their own personal voice, and use them to challenge all or some of Obama’s “wishes?” They seem so tongue-tied, to me! Democrats were voted into their Senate & Congressional seats, to use the voice of their constituents. I cannot believe that ALL Dem’s are happy about the circus that Obama’s Admin has become, and the spectacle that Obama has made of this country, and its people! I do not doubt, though, that this man has this country’s well-being at heart. He seems to be more concerned about how the rest of the world thinks about us (Iran, Russia, Africa!) I would like to know how much of this mess we can blame the Mrs with. Remember her comment about “hating” this country! I do hope all Obama supporters keep his lack of Executive experience in mind BEFORE voting for any candidate again. Lest, it be best that you just stay away from the polls, and help everyone else out, instead! This is such a huge mess!! I fear his antics will destroy this country that I love so much!! God Bless Us All!

FDR (bless his soul) couldn’t spend us out of the Depression with the New Deal…nor can Obama spend us out of this recession…it’s like stealing $50 from your neighbor and then spending it…you add $50 to the economy but your neighbor’s out $50, so qui bono? Nobody.
Cap & Trade Energy…how is this a good idea? It’s cost Spain 20% unemployment by killing 2.2 jobs for every “green” job. M.I.T. analysis predicts a $3,128 increase in energy bills for an average American family…and when we’re paying out the nose, are we to take comfort that Al Gore, Pelosi, Waxman, & Obama have saved us from global warming?
Challenge to any liberal: CO2 levels are higher than ever…yet despite this, temperatures worldwide have dropped since 2001…they didn’t drop for 6 months or a year, but for almost a DECADE now despite ever more CO2. Can you explain this? No, you can’t…period.

Do we drag China down? Probably not and here is why?
China is balking at buying newly issued Treasuries. At worst they will lose on the $1B they spent thus far.
Chinas auto output exceeded that of the US in the recent quarter, with a huge demand. China is poised to produce more autos than the US.
The growth rate in China is astonishing, same with Inida and other developing countries.
Should we hit a rut, China is liquid, not in debt like the US. China can attract capital to sustain.
There are other reasons, but I think China is just fine.

Mike’s comments (Jul 14) make a good point, but an angle to his thought is missing…..There is a rumor floating around that the ONLY states, counties, cities, which will benefit from Fed monies, (or have already rec’d), are those which were instrumental in getting this man elected!! I’d like to see the demographics on that rumor. What politician, or citizen of this country, can just sit by and watch our tax dollars be spent so prejudiciously?? The laws against this sort of thing must be significant, yet the Dem’s seem to be getting away with it? Selective distribution of our tax dollars has to be stopped. WHY DON’T WE HEAR MORE OF THIS ON THE NEWS AND HEADLINES????

Why would someone “so smart,” demand that their college Thesis’ be sealed? Strange. They don’t even want the subject matter or title of their papers revealed. Were they that politically controversial? Can’t this man just walk up to a podium, and speak from information absorbed to the brain, or must he be scripted every time he speaks in public?? Danita, read up a bit on how much improvement the Annenburg Challenge created in Chicago education. I believe it was about $140 Million that Obama and Ayers handed out. Be sure you check out WHAT the groups they funded taught and proposed. I’ll give you a brief summary. Basically zero improvement, this in areas that had one of the worst educational records in the nation. As to what they supported, some of the most amazingly hard left/socialist propaganda one could imagine in the US. Who did Obama appoint to oversee education? People from Chicago.
As with so many other areas, Obama’s rhetoric sounds great, unless you listen closely, note how weasel worded everything is, and look at the history of what the man has actually done, and who he associates with.
He claims that science will no longer take a back seat in his presidency, then pushes the cap and trade bill, while his EPA pulls an unprecedented short comment period on their greenhouse gas ‘endangerment’ finding and suppresses an internal report and gags its author. The report calls into question the very basis for their finding.
Meanwhile, as a nation we’re sitting on tremendous oil and gas reserves, and he’s moved strongly to prevent its use, contrary to the position he tried to portray himself holding after Palin’s Drill Baby Drill got such a strong positive public reaction.
Similarly, he’s blocking nuclear power, which by ANY scientific measure, any economic measure, and any safety measure – oh, ok, any AGW/green measure too – he ought to be moving full steam ahead on. But no, he’s going around claiming that we don’t know how to ‘safely’ handle the waste, which is obsurd to anyone who knows basics of the science and technology involved. He appoints a Sect. of Energy who had no clue that oil and OPEC issue were his job.
Obama and his appointee’s won’t be moving us forward on science, and he’s slicing entire segments of technology right out of the picture too. Not to mention that his economic policies are going to make it impossible to fund much of anything by anyone at this rate.

“Why all the outrage about government spending? I didn’t hear you people complaining when GW Bush burned through that massive surplus Clinton left him…”
—————-
Some people were complaining, actually quite a lot were. If I recall correctly, one side of the public that it was too much spending and too much deficit.
The other side, including the democrats in congress, screaming bloody murder at every budget Bush submitted about how he was cutting spending for education (he wasn’t at all, he INCREASED it), cutting spending for this other segment, and that other segment, and on and on. I’m not sure, but I think that House and Senate versions generally wound up being larger than Bush submitted, due to the Repubs giving in or going along, and the Dems pushing hard for increases pretty much across the board.

“You are right about one thing – Obama does keep claiming this is the worst recession since the Great Depression. As I’ve pointed out to you repeatedly, that patently FALSE. Or heck, with the past month job report, by now it may be at least in terms of unemployment tho not interest rates.”
Atlas . . .you go right ahead and tell the hundreds of thousands of people losing their jobs that this isn’t a serious economic crisis. And what other era do you think saw this huge a crash?

It’s a relieve to have Obama as president since 8 destructive years of George W. We should be glad that we have a president who is making serious work of recovering our economy and is helping to restore our relations with foreign friends, which have been seriously hurt during 8 years of George W. I wish mr. Obama a lot of luck for the coming years!

And our government has more money than they know what to do with, so they are giving it away…….Oh, we are so much better off, being controlled by our government, and the great global leaders, than bush…….or clinton……

Can you imagine the ridicule a Republican president would be subject to in Meet the Press and Face the Nation. Are you people kidding me. Laying this mess at the feet of a President who has been in office less than 6 months. This mess did not start on his watch it started because of the greed of corporate America and an administration that refused to put any regulations controlling them.God bless him for even wanting to take this mess on who among us would want to some how find a solution for all these problems all at the same time. Some of his plans will not work or will work slower than we want them to but he has been aggressive and has tried to right the ship.He works non stop and he is visible and accountable to the American people.Mistakes will be made but he is learning on the job and is providing a new sense of pride in American leadership around the world and at home which was desperately needed after 8 years of George Bush. Those on the right who sat silent while Bush ran a surplus into a huge deficit started a war he had no business starting at the tune of a billion dollars a day.Sat back and watched corporate America and wall street get rich on the backs of the middle class and watched millions lose their health care have lost their voice and their standing in our Nation and should be absolutely ashamed of themselves for the hypocrisy of their behavior and rhetoric.

Roddy – nice democratic talking points. Roddy Piper – At least attempt to get some facts correctly. The democrats mostly supported the US invasion of Iraq – remember? The democrats are primarily responsible, especially the Barney Frank ilk, of forcing the banks to lend to those incapable of affording a home mortgages while creating a so called security blanket with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Unions, welfare, entitlements, anti-business legislation inhibiting small business growth, high taxation, ruination of the public school system, class warfare are all democratic party programs that have created billions and now trillions into debt. Class warfare (which you seem to advocate) and the government take over of private enterprise is on Obama’s watch. You seem to strictly blame Bush and Wall Street. You are probably too ignorant to understand the billions in There are crooks everywhere (just look at some of Obama’s staff of tax evaders), but placing the blame on everyone but the liberal democrats is massive ignorance on your behalf. God forbid if the democrats take over health care. Where will the Europeans and Canadians go for their immediate health care needs if this country goes to a socialist, government rationed system? Also, the democrats were in control of Congress and the Senate the last two years of the Bush Administration. They have now been in control for close to three years. Are you better off with the democrats? Half of the people in this country do not pay taxes, are entitlement recipients and are sucking the life out of the most advanced, powerful and free nation on earth. Add another 30 million illegal immigrants and you’ve got a disaster on hand that are perfect folly for your democratic party which advocates government control of your life and liberties.

You just don’t get it, this is not a Repub/Demo issue. That is what they want you to think, but it is a power/corruption issue. Among Obama’s largest contributers are Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase, Citi Group and GE. So you still think that only Repubs have anything to do with Wall Street? In the Bush years it was war and oil with a marriage between business and governemnt in Haliburton. You lefties screamed like stuck pigs. Now it is green and health care with a marriage between business and government with GE and you lefties are ok with that, since it supports your agenda. IT IS THE SAME CORPORATE WELFARE. Wall Street was there in the Bush years to profit and they will be here during Obama to profit, they could care less how or where it comes from. Keep thinking in terms of demo/repub, while the corrupt, power-hungry, dishonest political operatives from BOTH parties ruin us.

Can’t they see that America is waking up to their anti-american tactics of crawling behind Obama and his traitors. I smelled a rat and traitor during the campaigns when he could not tell the people “what he was going to change.” He followed through with his failings along with his buds from Capitol Hill. Pelosi will sell her soul for him and those old men (Reid, Franks) that follow behind her are following her distortion to the American people. What a distorted group of anti-americans we have. @DW Griffith: Just for clarification a “Banana Republic is a pejorative term for a country that is politically unstable, dependent on limited agriculture (e.g. bananas), and ruled by a small, self-elected, wealthy, and corrupt clique.[1] It is most commonly used for countries in Central America and Africa such as El Salvador, Belize, Grenada, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Ethiopia and South Africa. In some cases, these nations have kept the government structures that were modeled after the colonial Spanish ruling clique, with a small, largely leisure class on the top, and a large, poorly educated and poorly paid working class of peons, though it might have the (fake) trappings of modernity (such as styling itself a republic with a president etc.)”
Not that I’m a Rush fan, far from it; however, before you make weak attempts to call somebody a racist please understand their talking points.
Currently our government is quickly steering this great nation towards either a Banana or Weimher republic all the while the mass population is too busy arguing over the colors of the walls in the White House. The sooner that you clowns realize that you’re just mouthpieces for the ruling class (politicians – both R and D) and grown a mind and opinions that are your own we will be able to correct this potential grave mistake.

The fact is Obama has many speechwriters. During the campaign and today that includes Jon Favreau, his top speechwriter from the campaign and now a White House staffer who is the jerk infamous for his photo hoisting a beer while groping the breast of a life size photo of Hillary Clinton and pretending to stuff a bottle of beer up her nose. Classy? NO. Favreau is a sexist jerk who should have been fired by Obama immediately, but, no, Obama hired him to work in the White House.
Obama’s words are rarely his own. That’s precisely WHY he relies so heavily on the teleprompter. Without the teleprompter, Obama is a stutterer, full of aaahhhh, oohhhh, ummmummm, iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii. Pathetic. The great communicator he is not.
Hillary should be President. Hillary is the only bright spot in this otherwise pathetic administration.

RobertC:
“I am surprised he didnt have a panic attack and knee jerk start raising taxes.”
HA! There probably was a minute of panic but he switched to the backup and his notes so the country was safe. Otherwise there would have been a prolonged uhuhuhuhuhuh as he core dumped.
And why is he apologizing for gravity?

Media malpractice is how he got elected. There is so much we don’t know about President Obama. When will we learn if he was really eligible to run for President? Why we don’t know anything about his application for college or his college grades? What we do know is astounding. Informed voters knew of his radical associations and affinity for terrorists, communism and socialist, but the average uninformed voter did not. It is ludicrous to have a President who cannot participate in an open debate or answer questions “off the cuff.”

“Of course, television reporters and anchors never become over-reliant on teleprompters. Never happens. Nope. Never.”
If GWB ever used a teleprompter like a crutch as much as BO does, he would have been lambasted for it, called every name in the book, and been the butt of every joke on late night tv. Saint Obama does it, and Miller and Tapper have the ‘audacity’ to disregard it. unbelievable how every media flak is ga-ga over this empty suit. wake up people!

Previous Presidents tended to only use a teleprompter for the State of the Union Address… and understandably… seeing how it is a speech that spans an hour or more.
Could you imagine President Obama at ground Zero – 9/14/01…
“I hear you. And soon… could you raise that teleprompter up just a little bit? …thank you. And soon those that knocked down these buildings will hear from you. In the form of an invitation to a tea time friendly chat.”

I am an independent .The last election both men by both parties were wrong.Did not vote for eith one of them. I do think McCain would have been lesser of the two evils. This kid in the White House is stupid,he is discusting.,idiot, watch him fall on his a.s .The people will wake up sooner then expected, then I hope and pray its not too late.I would love to see him about a month with out his tele prompter. The kid next door age 12 would give a better speech.I will never trust hi.,because there is so much doubt in him.His birth, his school recorde, his associates. The people he nominated ect ect.The best one he has is Hilliary she has more sense in her a.s then this Marxist has in his head. During Obama’s presidential campaign there was an incident where the teleprompters failed completely. The video was briefly out there but never lasted. BO was ‘lost’. He went into what I call ‘ghetto mode’ and started ad libbing like a inner city rapper. I SAW IT! Probably won’t find it now. I must say, however, that when they’re working, he sure can deliver the message.

It is amazing that President Obama who is a graduate from an ivy league university needs any assistance in his public speech. Even more amazing and disturbing, is even with this assistance his grammer is awful.
Many times his grammer is that of a high school dropout. I am not trying to be insulting but his grammatical mistakes are so obvious it is an embarrasment that he represents the worlds largest English speaking nation (even if we include the Latinos)

Make fun of Bush: Get a tv deal.
Make fun of Obama: Get branded a racist and banned from press conferences.
Seriously? Its surprising how many freedoms we’ve lost in just 7 months… and those who were complaining about loss of freedom 4 years ago are, apparently, loving every minute.
Same could be said for the deficit… where are the complainers about the rising deficit under Bush now?

Tim: yes, W read some speeches, too. However, he (and most of the folks who preceded him in the Oval Office) could also answer questions and speak off the cuff. Obama stutters and struggles anytime he is without his beloved prompters. Go back and look at footage from the campaign trail – his handlers worked long and hard to prevent him from having to speak going to or from the bus / car / plane. It is embarrassing.

Thick, presumably bullet-resistant teleprompter glass does not shatter so easily.
Remember when Michael Musakey “fainted” last year while giving a speech before the Federalist Society, in the wake of his authorization of a report sharply critical of DOJ “torture memo” authors? He stammered and slurred his words and collapsed. Just fainting?
The thought occurs that a silent burst from a microwave radiation “directed energy weapon” could cause such podium anomalies.
But such things only happen in Washington spy novels — right, Jake?
So investigate no further.

Obama can’t deliver anything coherent without his teleprompter. For such a brilliant man, I’m amazed that the press has never asked for his credentials- Obama’s kindergarten records, Punahou school records, Occidental College records, Columbia University records, Columbia thesis, Harvard Law School records, Harvard Law Review articles, scholarly articles from the University of Chicago, passport, medical records, files from his years as an Illinois state senator, Illinois State Bar Association records-
NOTHING has been released by this man yet they follow him blindly and without hesitation….Hey Kool Aid!!!

Lathon says and I quote “I hope Palin runs for president and cleans this mess up.”
HAHAHAHAHAA….right. Palin?!?!..please, the only reason why she was discovered was because of her looks, thats it. Right place at the right time.
Honestly she is NOT that good looking and her past interviews sucked. Talking about Alaska this, Alaska that… There is 49 other states that has problems, not just Alaska.
For the rest of you… Bush, didn’t rely on a teleprompter, cause he would be too slow to read it, thats why he read off the paper that his WRITERS wrote FOR HIM. Bush’s paper would state this, if he had written it… “American people…………………..Hmmmmmmm,………….today, we are going to go to war………..uhmmmm…… to fight saddam who has not bothered us since my papi was in presidency in the early 90′s. (yeah, that sounds goods)….uhmmmm…(1hr later) Then…. take over their land, like how the settlers did, whickh killed the American Indians for the land that we stand on….(yeah, sounds good)… I want I really want to say is that my PAPI always thought I was a fu*k up and couldn’t do anything right, I hate him…. Thank you America…
Thats what his own SPEECH would say.
So thank ALL the WRITERS for their effort to keep BOTH parties in check.
Obama, atleast has the ability to keep up with the words on the screen, even though he may have stutter through out times.
All in all, who gives a fly “F” on who is better or which race is better, who has the most power, etc, etc, etc… the world is ending and nobody even notices it, cause we are blaming everyone else besides the person in the mirror.
That’s all I got to say about that.

And he has been extremely dependent upon his Teleprompters as he lacked experience when he came into office. After 6 months he can wing it a bit, but your jollying us along isn’t going to make a difference. What can make a difference is for people to see this President wing it on his own.

Every person in the US will feel the same misery with the obamanition’s socialist crap. to Ann, the president does not “run the country.” The president’s job is to act as chief executive of the government. State and society are two distinct concepts, or at least they have been. With this teleprompter-reading empty suit, a lemming Dem Party, and a sycophantic media flock, we see an effort to blur the distinction.

I hope you obama-lovers can live without electricity, money, gas and food. If you think obama is trying to “save” the economy by stealing money from “rich” people and giving it to the poor, go back to the 6th grade and re-read your Robin Hood book. This too (obama’s hope & change) is a fairy tale. Have you ever been employed by a POOR person?? HMMM?????
Obama and his socialist/nazi/communist friends (read dems) are trying to DESTROY the economy so we all have to “rely” on the government for everything. Sound familiar? Try Russia in the 1920′s. If you obama-lovers are “educated” (college degrees, etc.) you’d better take off your sunglasses and learn TRUE history because it’s about to repeat itself, right here in the U.S.
Learn to grow your own food, learn to KILL animals for meat. Learn to survive WITHOUT government and without money because that is where we’re headed unless we get a whole pile of good Conservatives back in power.
“Hope & Change”
(Hope you have something to eat because all you have is a little Change in your pocket)
Pull your head out, open your eyes and realize that SOCIALISM & COMMUNISM does not work! It didn’t work for Russia (USSR), Nazi Germany (Nazi’s are not right-wingers; read your dictionary), is not working in N. Korea & China, is not working in Europe and will NOT work in the U.S.
Wake Up!

Axey:”And I’ll bet it will come as a huge surprise to you that I can’t take anyone seriously that thinks Obama is a better president than Bush. ”
Yes, actually. I had you pegged as a conservative, but suggesting the Obama administration is worse than the Bush administration firmly establishes you as a partisan or a cultural conservative (big government is fine as long as it keeps the gays/abortionists/evolutionist/etc in check).
Bush spent more, grew government more, entangled us more in foreign adventures, and liberally (to use the literal definition of that word) enlarged the power of the Executive at the expense of Constitutional checks and balances. That’s documented.
Obama may end up being as bad or worse, but to say you think that already shows that you are not basing your opinion on the actual documented facts.

For the few of you that are debating the skills of Bush & Obama, why? They both suck. Obama hasn’t had time to prove himself one of you said? God help us when he’s had that time. Bush was basically inept as a president. Obama is just plain diabolical with an agenda to lead us into socialism all the while smiling and schmoozing the media so they will make him look like a saint.

We need true good CONSERVATIVES now. NOT necessarily Republicans….Many of us need to learn the difference and a more about political philosophy and the effects of uninformed votes. When the people fear the government we have tyranny, when the government fears the people we have LIBERTY. They work for us!

First the disclaimer: I can’t stand Obama. Can’t stand that tight-lipped look, the way he rushes his words, and any of his policies.
Having said that, I like that he can joke about himself. That makes two things he’s done that I like. The first was squashing that hideous fly.

A bobble head empty suit loses half of his lifeline to his reality and the world is all a twitter over it. I am positively giddy with excitement over the upcoming policies taking effect. The continuing job losses, pain and suffering will be music to my ears. Stupid people learn slowly but learning can be enhanced for the dim if augmented with blinding white hot pain coupled with mind numbing poverty and a degradation of all that America has enjoyed for decades due to the foolish voting habits of clueless twits who couldn’t think their way out of a paper sack.

Jake/ABC News: Listen up.
Either the fastening mechanism holding the glass to the stand came loose — something the set-up crew should have noticed — or some “force” hit that glass and caused it to shatter.
The video shows that the stand itself did NOT fall.
What kind of force would cause thick ‘prompter glass — surely “safety glass” — to shatter?
Did the glass shatter BEFORE or AFTER it hit the floor?
Even if it did hit the floor intact, would thick ‘prompter glass have shattered as it did, sending shards flying?
This appear to defy the laws of physics — unless some invisible force beam hit that glass.
These are serious questions that beg for follow-up. Start here:

Jake / ABC News investigative unit:
Those links, re: “directed energy weapon” were garbled.
Again,
Did the glass shatter before or after it it the floor?
If it did hit the floor intact, would thick safety glass have shattered as it did?
Did some invisible force beam hit that glass, causing this incident?
If so, what are the ramifications?

Dear jhw539,
George Bush was not a conservative. Was he a bad President? Maybe. He spent like a liberal. He gave out entitlements like a liberal. He got us into two conflicts in the middle east. Barak Obama Is spending twice as much. Does that make him better? He will give out much, much more in entitlements. Does that make him better? He promised you we would leave Iraq within 16 month of his election. We will always have troops in Iraq (50,000). He lied does that make him better. He said if you make less than $250,000 you will not pay one dime more in taxes? Cap and trade. We will all pay for that. Taxing health care benefits? There are not enough rich people to pay for the checks this man is writing. We will all be paying more in taxes. Because of the national debt he is increasing there will be massive inflation. Does that make him better?

Telepromters, cue cards, ear pieces, all aides … shouldn’t be allowed by any president. They ought to wing it, just like the real presidents did before the age of the Federal Reserve (when American people owned the currency). I think only idiots use devices when giving a speech. OBAMA IS AN IDIOT

yvette, Letterman tapes in the early evening. If this was not reported until late afternoon or early evening, it is a bit late to get into the show. There is usually a day delay between something that happens and the late night jokes (mainly because the shows are not taped at late night). The Bush supporters/Obama haters sound like a bunch of little kids who whine because they think things are not being done fairly.

If real presidents didn’t use aids, then why is there a copy of one of the most famous speeches by a president, The Gettysburg Address, located in the Lincoln bedroom in the White House. All the teleprompter does is take the speech and put it in a location so the person speaking can look at the crowd the whole time they are speaking, instead of having to look down on a podium.

Now that everyone can see the real truth that BO can’t even tie his shoes without his teleprompter, we are going to give you a good taste of your own medicine. Bush and the Republicans need to be held accountable I say for putting us in a mess on the economy and for Iraq.
Now some Republicans what a clean slate so they can run in the 2010 and 2012 elections.
The American People don’t get a clean slate until the Republican mess is taken care of on the economy, all our troops are home from Iraq and Afghanistan. If Bush and his Republican supporters didn’t drag us into Iraq resources concentrated on getting Osama would have happened and we would have been out of Afghanistan by now.

“All I can say, you guys are soooooo jealous of Obama. He’s graceful, he’s funny, he’s super-smart, you’re not.”
Well in response to this ignorance let me fill you in on something. First, might I correct you on the “Obama”, though he does not command my respect on a intellectual point of view I will respect him enough to call him “President Obama”, or “Mr. President”. He has been elected to this title and deserves that much. On the rest of your comments; his grace has not been there, the continuation of slurred ums followed by stammers is a sign of President Obama’s inability to grasp the concepts that he is preaching.
He continually demonstrates a failure to bring much more then charisma to the table and in an age where the American public cares more about reality television then its countries welfare, I guess that is all it takes.I will concede to your humor comment, though it’s how he handles himself not through jokes.
Lastly, your own inability to have anything to say other then commenting on his personality rather then his practices has decreased the IQ on this page. It has effectively invalidated your points and it is easily noticeable that you follow him as a sheep follows a herder.
As far as this actual article is concerned, it makes me happy to see this. The media that was lead on a leash by this administration is seeming to turn slowly and I can’t wait to see how it will be by the end of his term. Hopefully it won’t be to late for our constitution and our capitalistic ideals!

Heck, Im going to leave one more comment. I’m going to tell you why we hate Obama so much . . . and the reasons vary from luny right winger to luny right winger . . .
1. we don’t want to inflate the dollar
2. we don’t want to be dependant on government hand outs.
3. We want the poor to be benefited by the best economic system called capitolism.
4. We believe the poor can benefit best by voluntary charity.
5. We understand that there are greedy poor people and generous rich people
6. We get it that wealth is not the primary cause of greed
7. We don’t want abortion to be legal anymore
8. We don’t want prayer and religious expresion conttroled by the gov in public schools anymore
9. We don’t want government bailing out the economy
10. We don’t want the government to be powerful enough to become a repeat DICTATORSHIP.
thats not the half of it.

Things Republicans Believe
A woman can’t be trusted with decisions about her own body, but multi-national corporations can make decisions affecting all mankind without regulation.
The best way to improve military morale is to praise the troops in speeches while slashing veterans’ benefits and combat pay.
A good way to fight terrorism is to belittle our long-time allies, then demand their cooperation and money.
Wall Street under Republicans had the interest of the public at heart.
Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy. Providing health care to all Americans is socialism.
Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad guy when Bush’s daddy made war on him, a good guy when Cheney did business with him and a bad guy when Bush needed a “we can’t find Bin Laden” diversion.
Can’t find Osama? Invade Iraq for oil! A president lying to enlist support for a war in which thousands die is solid defense policy.
Trade with Cuba is wrong because the country is communist, but trade with China and Vietnam is vital to a spirit of international harmony.

“eraserhead” is a well trained Liberal talking point. The sad part is that he may believe what he spouts rather than historical fact. For instance invading Iraq for OIl. Show me the oil. I don’t have the heart to tell our President that he’s the most economically inept President in our history. Get ready for 2010 because the Democrats are going to get smashed.
What our current Idiot-In-Chief doesn’t yet grasp is that where economics is concerned there is no such thing as politics. It’s a numbers game and you can’t fight the numbers no matter how hard you try.
Sorry Demos, but his numbers “don’t add up” and we will continue to see a failure in the US economy for two more years at least. Oh he’ll spin it wonderfully but the numbers will come in and he’ll end up being nothing more than a pimple on the ass of American history.

… so what? Politicians have been using TelePrompTers for speeches since they were invented. McCain used them. Bush used them. Sarah Palin used, and continues to use, them. They’re a convenient way to jot down prepared comments.
The notion that Obama can’t speak off the cuff is demonstrably false; nearly any tape of him fielding questions at a town hall meeting, or in a one-on-one interview shows that he’s more than capable of speaking without notes.
To be concerned about the current state of the economy and the nation is completely understandable, and to have different views than the President on how to address these issues is everyone’s right as an American (just as everyone has the right to agree). But latching onto this silly issue seems woefully petty.

Wow It took all day to get the “I love the “O”man crowd out. Didn’t you get the email from Rham & Soros?
It’s the “neo-cons” it’s “Bush bla,bla bla”. Bush is gone love him or hate him. BO’s got the job now.
Lets triple down on the deficit, lets kill the private sector, after all, anyone who needs a job the government will give you a check (for a while).
The trouble with socialism is that you always run out of other peoples money.
But hey “O” mans supporters are always looking for a free ride on someone that actually makes a living on their own.

So let me get this straight… It’s ok to hate on President Obama because he is intelligent enough to read a teleprompter. President Bush, incapable of reading a damn thing, was better?
Posted by: seriously?

Let me set this straight for you. You don’t have to be intelligent to reads the teleprompter, just looked at olberman, matthews, maddow, sanchez, etc.
So you say Bush can’t read, that’s new to the rest of us. You got any proof or it’s just one of the typical libs smear job

I regret to inform you that the president is mentally impaired due to his youthful drug abuse. NIH studies have shown conclusively that the abuser’s maturity is stopped right in its tracks at the age of the abuse. We have a juvenile delinquent as a president, trying to be popular. Hence, all the give away programs. Now, he is contemplating paying mortgage payments for deadbeats, and still letting the “owners” live in the homes. Talk about a sophomore class president idea. Obama needs to be out, and fast.

Obama is a joke! Start the movement to release his college transcripts. Affirmative Action beneficiaries are mediocre at best. Obama is their poster child for AA what a joke..

Obama would be wise to pay closer attention to the presence of the Almighty in our human existence. In my experience, it is the “Still, Small Voice” that one should abide by to avoid the Great Big Whoop-arse Voice that will and does result when the Still, Small Voice is ignored.

New crapola on Barry “new lies for old” Obama: The white house staff is putting “pressure” on Senator John Kyl of Arizona because he isn’t drinking the Kool-Aid that the stimulus is working. White House is threatening to take away Federal programs from the state. They handled it just like high school punk sophomores. They went and told the Governor of Arizona to remind Kyl he could be held responsible for losing all that Federal money if he didn’t shut down his talk about rescinding the stimulus programs. WE DO HAVE A JUVENILE DELINQUENT FOR PRESIDENT! That youthful drug abuse that Barry did arrested his maturity at about fourteen or fifteen years old. That he is a juvenile delinquent makes it so easy for him to lie, with or without a teleprompter.

you said in the article:
“Of course, television reporters and anchors never become over-reliant on teleprompters. Never happens. Nope. Never.”
You have the NERVE to equate yourselves as at the same level of importance as the President??? You arrogant idiots. You are worse than him! You make your living reading from a prompter… HIS royal Obama (read NARCISSIST or ARROGANT FOOL) makes sure every move is calculated to further his political career… Go back to his campaign “promises”… How are those workin’ out for ya?
Yeah… I thought so…

Are you kidding me??? Did you vote for the “experience free candidate” Obama because you were voting against Bush and his ilk??? Is THAT what you based your criteria for selection of the leader of the greatest nation in the world on?
What the heck did you do!? You are a dam fool. You voted in a Socialist!!!! Hows that workin’ out for ya?

Could it be that the Big One was trying to Smite He-Who-Would-Be-King?
Notice that the teleprompter fell right when Obama got to his prevarication about the purpose of the “stimulus” bill.
Coincidence? Or something else????

Would Cicero have used a teleprompter, if the technology were available in his times?
Would Demosphen or Ceasar, or any of the other heroes of the past?
I don’t think so…

OMG, not the death of the teleprompter!! Yikes, I guess we will be treated to the never ending “uhs”, “ums” and stuttering from this Einstein who is totally incapable of putting two words together without the assistance of his best buddy, Mr. Teleprompter. Please. This was staged. “Oh Goodness”? He did this to show he could deliever a speech without a teleprompter. This was so his supporters can say, “look at how good he does without one”

The teleprompter couldn’t think of anymore lies to give to the President, so it committed sucide.
