Malia Obama – Budding Fashionista?

ABC News' Karen Travers, Sunlen Miller and Caitlin Taylor report:

Is Malia Obama following in the fashionista footsteps of her mother, First Lady Michelle Obama, and flashing designer duds?

For the flight with her family from Washington DC to Moscow, the 11-year old First Tween sported a skirt that bears a striking resemblance to one by designer See by Chloe.

rt Obama2 090706 wmain Malia Obama – Budding Fashionista?

The skirt is available for purchase online at Intermix, retails for $345 but is now on sale for $219.

The White House does not comment on the clothing choices of the First Daughters’ and would not confirm that the skirt was indeed by the designer.

If so, Malia, who just turned eleven this past weekend, may have inherited her mother's taste in sometimes expensive clothes. Most recently Mrs. Obama, who at times is also known to wear affordable J Crew, was seen sporting a pair of $540 kicks at a community service event at a DC food bank.

Malia, as well as her younger sister, Sasha, will have many high -profile outings with their parents while on a week-long jaunt through Russia, Italy and western Africa.

Well, we’re just thrilled that they could all “jaunt”.

This is news??? How about “Daddy says not to meddle in Iran, and then gets up at 3AM to back a dictator.” Oh, I forgot. This is the All Barack Channel.

Posted by: wheresmymoney | July 6, 2009, 4:01 pm 4:01 pm

The average work week in the private sector is 33.0 hours. Higher unemployment, part time instead of full time hiring, = less hours, less income, fewer benefits, less spending, more bankruptcies.
Where are the stimulus jobs?
“The truth is, we and everyone else misread the economy,”. We and everyone else? Not so El Clowno. Is this one of those a lie becomes the truth deals? Kinda like “the stimulus has done its job” statements?

You mean the dictator who received suppport against the coup from every major country in the world?

So now we’re paying for the family members to go on business trips? I thought the whole reason we were paying for the grandmother to live at the White House was so she could take care of the girls.

Malia has a face like a model…she is extremely photogenic…she is beautiful…I don’t know who I feel more sorry for Jong or the guy that dates his daughter…and Sasha is cute as a button…But looks aside, I’m sure these girls are extremely smart…and yes, it’s summer, I would like to spend a few moments each day with my dad if it is possible…

Jake didn’t write this, 3 women did. Though why I couldn’t tell you. Other than to make note that the mother who buys clothes at J Crew (some of the outfits she has worn from there cost $1,000, not exactly your everyday wardrobe in middle America) also spends money on designer clothing for her daughters. Which is nice, if you can afford it. And since Michelle loves to tell us how they struggled all those years, it’s nice they can finally splurge and buy their children the finer things in life.

Yes, the family is a good image to project to the world especially during things like nuclear negotiations.
It was President Kennedy who thought of his children and their future when he successfully negotiated a stand down from possible nuclear warfare during the Cuban missile crisis.

I am so glad that the Obama family is walking the talk and trying to personally spend our nation out of this economic crisis. Forget the stimulus package. At this rate, we’re just a few more designer skirts and a couple more pair of high-priced sneakers away from coming out of the recession. They are such a remarkable example for the rest of us who still have to shop at Wal-Mart, K-Mart and Target. Do you think we’ll see them in an armor-plated, bullet-proof Smart car soon?

Well, according to the Democrat playbook, not to mention the nuts at MSNBC, we have every right to criticize…after all, they are flaunting those kids, right? They’re exploiying them, just like Sarah Palin did when she took her freaking BABY onstage at the Republican convention. (oh, the wicked woman.)
The Obamas had their offspring being interviewd on Entertainment Tonight or something…but that wasn’t exploiting, that was INFORMATION ABOUT GOD’S CHILDREN, right?
The media snobs can say it, push it, repeat it day after day but it still won’t make Michelle Obama a “fashionista”, or classy, at that. She dresses like she’s starring in a remake of Gone With the Wind.
As for the daughters, I’m anti picking on a child, but are you Libs for real? If you can’t take it, then shut about about a Down Syndrome baby, okay?
After all, what’s fair is fair.

But back to my point (which you completely ignored by the way). Don’t you find it odd that the last 3 major contenders for the presidency in the donkey party have been incredibly rich? Regardless, you are correct in that edwards and gore are no longer in the government. Gore is busy cruising on his private jet/yacht and getting paid $300,000 per speaking event about “carbon emission”, and edwards has retreated to his 30,000 sq ft mansion-thank GOD!

Not everything we read is the truth, seems that by now we would all know that. Also, why do we feel the need to approve or disapprove? Real change occurs with the individual and then radiates out to our community and nation, not the other way around. Also, I wouldn’t want people that I didn’t know taking pictures of my kids either, it can’t be easy.

Wait a second, it wasn’t her dress that was worth $300,000 – it was her ‘outfit’.
============
I can’t believe we somehow are talking about Cindy McCain’s appearance at that RNC almost a year ago, but here we go…
It was Vanity Fair who “estimated” that price tag, and it included what they thought her jewelry might be worth.
Out of a total $313,100, they put her jewelry – including her watch- at a value of $309,500.
As you can see, the dress and shoes she wore were similar in price (around a total of $3,600) to the dresses Michelle Obama wears on a regular basis.

Posted by: MayBee | July 6, 2009, 6:23 pm 6:23 pm

It’s because people were carping on the young Obama girl for her clothes, that they ‘might’ be fashion designed . .. a “striking resemblance” is how it was put . ..
So in return people are being reminded that Cindy McCain wore a $300,000 outfit to the Republican convention.
Just to put things in perspective.
If you want to detail the finances of Cindy McCain’s charity work – please do. We’ll await the figures . . .

Just because something retails at certain stores for 300 dollars, doesn’t mean that the Obamas paid 300 dollars for it. Maybe they bought it on sale, received it as a gift, or just bought something that looks just like a designer outfit but isn’t. I have all sorts of clothes I got that way, or at overstock stores.

Posted by: heather | July 6, 2009, 7:15 pm 7:15 pm

It is unnecessary to speculate about what or who the Obama girls are wearing.
If the press would spend more time on newsworthy issues (the economy, where are the jobs, why are insiders still selling stocks at 22-1, why has Obama meddled in some foreign affairs and declared hands off in others, why doesn’t the president understand the Constitution with regards to private business and Senate approval of treaties, etc) and not spend so much time on human interest distractions, we might have an informed electorate.
Also, since some of you got sidetracked, Cindy McCain has her own money (yes, people love beer) and can spend it any way she pleases. She also gives a lot of money and time to charities, not that anyone who wants to attack her cares.

Cindy McCain raised two sons that are in the military one who has been overseas fighting many times. She can wear whatever she wants. No Obama has ever enlisted in the service.
Obama made fun of how elitist McCain family was because McCain’s dad was an admiral. McCain had to move from place tto place renting. His father wasn’t rich. Admirals don’t make a big salary like Obama who makes tens of millions selling himself in books and gives almost nothing to charity. Cindy gives far more percentage wise to charity that the obama’s. Only charity money Obama gave was to rev wright’s church.
Cindy works on landmines around the world and project smile.

Jeff . ..
I think you missed the point. People were attacking on the Obamas and the young Obama girl for the skirt she was wearing and how it was so expensive.
The comparison was made with Cindy McCain’s outfit at the Republic convention.
Nobody questioned Cindy’s patriotism, or the poor, disadvantage upbringing of the Admiral’s son.
However, the question was raised – how many dollars has Cindy McCain put into charity compared to every dollar she put into that $300,000 outfit.
And all deserved power to Ms. McCain for whatever efforts she has put into the fight against land mines and project smile.

I think a lot of tweens look to to other young tweens and teens like Lourdes and Malia to set trends.

I agree, the children should be off limits to the press regardless left or right…and I believe when one is 18 and makes national spotlight announcements is of adult age…as with Bristol…she decided to take the National spotlight for teen pregnancy and as such media will scrutinize her…she is an adult taking on an adult job and will receive attention as such and will learn to take an unfortunate hard dose of reality…as for the Bush girls they were 19 partying up and under age drinking when Bush came into the presidency…Chelsea Clinton was merely 12 years old and was tormented in the press in regards to her looks…personally, I thought she was cute-we were all gauky sometime in our tweens or early teens…and now she’s a beautiful young lady…

It always makes me laugh myself silly when right-wingers start their talk about “the mainstream media.”
It’s obviously one of Rush’s favorite catch-phrases and equally obvious that his mindless followers have no idea what it means.
Hint: There is the rational, sane “mainstream media” and then there is the irrational insane media. Examples of the latter would be “News Of The World” with their pictures of bat-boy and alien space-monsters on the front cover, as well as Rush Limbaugh with all his crazy rantings.
Amazingly and amusingly, right-wingers consider totally independent news sources (such as PBS) as horrible “mainstream media” (which of course, they are) and are only willing to consider anything as “fact” if a nut-case like Rush tells them it’s true.
Given the choice, I’d far rather listen to rational reporting than irrational ranting.
As to Malia, I’ve always seen the same sense of sophistication in her that I’ve seen in her mother. It does not surprise me at all that she has her own ideas of what she feels she looks good in, or what she wants to be seen wearing.

Wrong, one of Cindy’s sons is an enlisted solder. You don’t even know about it because the media only fawns over Obama’s family during the campaign.
Cindy has a 19 year old son who enlisted and was overseas twice.
Cindy slept with a cell phone all the time.
Cindy was mocked during the campaign how elitist she was while her son was on the front lines.

Malia is cute girl with nice clothes lucky girl wish I could afford it, but if their parents are going to dress them like stars or fashion baby dolls they shoud expect it to get noticed, now moving on.

MME, You have your facts wrong. McCain has a 19 year old son who is enlisted and whose’s job was to clear the roads of explosives for high ranking officers. He found out his father won new hampshire while digging his vehicle out of a ditch.
A family that served our country for generations is called elitist while the Obama’s make tens of millions off their books and give none to charity.
McCain donated all his book royalties to charity.
McCain donated all his senate salary increases to charity.
The week before obama took office even though he is worth a fortune he was still milking it selling rights to another book.

I seem to remember Cindy McCain wearing a $300,000 outfit – shoes, jewels, dress to the Republican Convention.
Let me tell you, anybody who’s wearing $300,000 in clothes and jewelry IS part of the elite – and flaunting it.
Any mockery is well earned.

Posted by: danita | July 6, 2009, 9:18 pm 9:18 pm

Cindy McCain wore a $300,000 ensemble to the Republican National Convention, which made Sarah Palin feel dowdy in comparison. So Sarah had to go on a shoppping spree on the Republican Party’s AmEx card.
The Obama’s, on the other hand, buy all of their own, and their children’s, clothes.

It’s possible the Obamas aren’t paying for their children’s clothes. At least not the ones they got from J Crew. We’ll see how the Obamas respond to J Crews’ latest press release.

It is well documented that MO has a team that does her hair makeup and a couple of stylist for clothes for public appearances. Of course the “wearer” has final say so of the choices, but trust me… they wouldn’t be so well put together on their own. This is not unusual and we should be thankful that there is staff available to make our first family presentable.

How in the heck did Ms. McCain and what she wore to the republican convention get introduced, via numerous comments, into this article? I suppose it’s because she is wealthy, a republican, wife of Senator John McCain, soft spoken; adopted and continue to raise a young girl who was suffering with tremendous physical and emotional problems; and she “is a member of the board of Halo Trust, an international land-mine removal group, and Operation Smile, which provides surgery for children born with cleft palates.” I suppose these are the qualities that generate hate, ridicule, and disdain from those on the Left.

Posted by: Percy | July 6, 2009, 9:52 pm 9:52 pm

I have a question for Ms. Travers, Miller or Taylor. Did you receive the press release from J Crew on what the Obama children were wearing in Moscow? Wouldn’t that be a bigger story than whether Malia is a fashionista?

Posted by: Axey | July 6, 2009, 9:54 pm 9:54 pm

Anyone here ever read the Russian press. It only adds more fodder for many in the Russian press to report on the Obamas arrogance and superficiality. Obama could have stayed in the luxury rooms in the Kremlin for important guests or made other arrangements. The headlines in Pravda the other day was “Obama to Stay in $13,870 a Night Room at the Ritz-Carlton”. The Ritz stopped yaking reservations for July 5 through 7. This basically means the American taxpayers were renting the entire hotel, one of the most expensive in the world.

Posted by: tx281 | July 6, 2009, 9:56 pm 9:56 pm

Percy . . .
I think you missed what happened.
People were attacking on the Obamas and the young Obama girl for the skirt she was wearing and how it was so expensive.
The comparison was made with Cindy McCain’s outfit at the Republic convention which when you included the dress, the shoes and the jewlry totalled $300,000.
Nobody questioned Cindy’s patriotism, or her charitable work, or the poor, disadvantaged upbringing of her husband the Admiral’s son.
However, the question was raised – how many dollars has Cindy McCain put into charity compared to every dollar she put into that $300,000 outfit.
And all deserved power to Ms. McCain for whatever efforts she has put into the fight against land mines and operation smile.

Posted by: danita | July 6, 2009, 9:59 pm 9:59 pm

“Obama comes to Moscow to prevent another Cold War”

Posted by: danita | July 6, 2009, 10:02 pm 10:02 pm

Oh, and I also read this in the Pravda article . ..
“The previous US presidents – Bill Clinton and George W. Bush – preferred to stay at Marriott Grand Hotel during their visits to Moscow. The hotel was closed for all other visitors when Bush visited Moscow. The procession of over 40 vehicles and buses accompanied Bush on his way to the hotel.”
So Bush had the ENTIRE Marriot Grand Hotel for his visit – I guess President Obama just doesn’t deserve the same as a Republican president, does he tx281?
Double standard yet again . . . pathetic.

In my eyes, the print on Malia’s skirt looks bigger and bolder than the expensive one. Whether it’s the same or not, I can’t say for sure, and neither can anyone else, even the so-called “journalist” who wrote this specious article. Either way, however, this is NON-ISSUE.

Cindy McCain never lectured anybody on how THEY should be the ones to sacrifice,,on how “mean” this country is and how she was only proud of her country once her husband was running for President. If you can show a picture of Cindy McCain standing in a HOMELESS shelter food line wearing $500 sneakers while condescendingly serving broccoli and sprouts to starving homeless people, then you can be outraged at what she pays for her clothes.

Hate to break it to you, but the verdict is almost unanimous on Sarah Palin. Even a FOX commentator came out today saying “the woman is inarticulate, undereducated”, and that liberal criticism was “well-deserved”.
The commentator also said Palin “begs for adjectives like flaky and wacky”, “really has no credentials” and that she got where she is in politics largely through her “good looks and her gender”.
That from Liz Trotta of FOX.

Boxcar . .. p.s. – nasty piece on her, but perhaps not unfair. I think many would agree she seemed ‘inarticulate’ under open questioning and did seem noticeably ‘uneducated’ about world affairs at the least. I for one was shocked and terrified at the thought of her anywhere near the Presidency.

Posted by: danita | July 6, 2009, 11:39 pm 11:39 pm

Danita, You may snark about double standards, but no one does double standards better than you. You take a discussion of the Obama girls’ clothes and turn it into an opportunity to try to trash Cindy McCain. Shameful. Mrs. McCain’s much maligned ultra-expensive outfit at the convention, so breathlessly and rudely described by detractors on the web, was mainly expensive because of the jewelry she wore. Actually, because of one particular accessory– diamond earrings.
FOr openers, the 300,000 price tag comes from Vanity Fair, hardly the most neutral observer of political figures and their spouses. So since they want to put Cindy down for her supposed extravangance, they will use the high side of estimates. Even using their figures, they guesstimated her dress to cost 3 thousand dollars– and I defy you to argue that none of Michelle Obama’s dresses have cost that much. Of course they have. cindy’s shoes were estimated at 600, even though the designer was not known so the figure is suspect. Now we know Michelle wears 540 sneakers, so her feet have probably seen some 600 pumps in their day. The way the ensemble reached the high price tag was that Cindy’s diamond stud earrings were tagged as costing 280,000. So over 90% of the price comes from the earrings. And I have my doubts about that estimate. You can get very very nice 3 carat diamond earrings– as those were reported to be– for closer to 100,000. So the original cost estimate is suspect and probably inflated, but is mainly based on the price of a pair of earrings that are an investment that will last many lifetimes, not like a pair of shoes that will wear out. I fail to see the expense as outrageous, given the circumstances.
Now Cindy’s taste in jewelry is certainly not mine, but she can afford expensive jewelry and I do not begrudge her that privilege, any more than I begrudge the Obama girls the right to wear overpriced J.Crew coats or fancy shoes. I think it is ridiculous of people to harp on the money spent on these items of clothing when the wearers can afford them. (And yes, I did think the soup kitchen shoes were perfectly fine, but ugly, but that Michelle should not have worn them in that setting. Her buying them was never a problem for me.)
But I digress. Cindy McCain is a millionairess who has contributed huge sums of money to charities including Operation Smile as well as giving generously of her time and energy as well. She has adopted a child who was suffering in an Asian orphanage. She provides a home for her aunt. She is a lovely woman and does not deserve your scorn because she wears nice clothes that cost more than many people can afford.
Can you not defend the Obamas, Danita, without insulting some Republican (this time, Cindy McCain)? And you actually said it was perfectly okay to heap score upon this good woman. Why? Because, you said, “Let me tell you, anybody who’s wearing $300,000 in clothes and jewelry IS part of the elite – and flaunting it. Any mockery is well earned.” So does that apply to anyone who can afford fine jewelry, or just to Republican women? Because I know Teresa Kerry wears fine jewelry that rivals Cindy’s for price and value, as does Nancy Pelosi. Are you going to declare open season on mocking them as well? Didn’t think so.

Posted by: moderate | July 6, 2009, 11:43 pm 11:43 pm

NOw, back to trying to ignore Danita and concentrating on the subject of the post. I think J Crew should be ashamed of themselves for so blatantly attempting to cash in on the Obama girls wearing their clothing, issuing that memo today talking about the specific styles Sasha and Malia were wearing. AFter all, JCrew is getting plenty of free publicity from all the Obama females wearing their clothes– did they really need to push it? It was foolish of them and I am sure the WH will smack them down for it– and rightly so.

Posted by: moderate | July 6, 2009, 11:46 pm 11:46 pm

I think it was brilliant for Palin to step down.
It’s always much easier for ideologue’s to hold their absurd views when they don’t actually have to put them in action.
This way she can hold elected leaders to outlandish standards of political purity without having to cleave to the same standard herself.
It’s much easier to throw stones if you don’t have a glass house in the first place.

I’m sure there are more important things than this. If they can afford the clothes so be it.
I do think that buying Sarah Palin’s clothes was really too much. No wonder the Repubs have a problem.
Give it a rest! How do you know who paid for the Obama’s clothes? They are wealthy, but you cannot believe that they are paying for all of the designer clothes Michelle wears themselves. Especially the same people who so generously gave almost nothing to charity unless you count the $20,000 to Reverend Wright’s fine church or to the Black Caucus. Plus, Michelle might have a law degree but she is no lawyer since she has no license. Do you really believe that with the millions of dollars he raised for his campaign that they actually paid for their clothes out of their own pockets? You are just envious because Sarah Palin looked so professional in her clothes. I am not even going to comment on how Michelle looks in hers. But, just keep trying to tell yourselves how polished and stylish she is. How to decide which outfit is more memorable? The wadded up, used tissue looking inaugural gown or the apron, printed whatever over the gray slacks thing in London. More important issues? Yes, on that I agree with you.

Clearly, you did not “notice” the byline, because Mr. Tapper did not write this piece. There are three names on the byline, none of them his.
And I’d like to take this opportunity to point out how many of you seem to miss the basic idea of this blog. Like jcomet, you complain frequently that Tapper and co. are reporting on the trivial, like clothes or photo ops. Gang, this is not the evening newscast. This is a blog. Tapper posts a lot of stuff here, everything from transcripts of briefing give-and-take to stories about the picnic dunking booth. This is not the main vehicle for his hardhitting, serious reporting. This is an extra, an additional service for us news junkies that Tapper is under no obligation to provide.
Thank you, Mr. Tapper (and the others who contribute to this blog) for presenting such a font of diverse information, much of which is interesting but does not fit into a traditional standup television piece. I for one truly appreciate all that you do.

piece on “Peanut butter sandwiches- crust or no crust?”
Maybe some day you’ll become the “Jeanie Moos of ABC”. Keep at it.

It’s all for show, isn’t it. Staged propaganda. They are just like us…all warm & fuzzy.
Great article.Keep up the good work Tapper. Pray for our country. 2010 can’t come fast enough.

I am sure it would be completely appropriate for Sascha and Malia to wear Converse All Stars and ratty tee shirts on these trips to meet foreign dignitaries. Are you people crazy – the kids look good and presentable and more importantly seem somewhat down to earth and well mannered.

Is your entire post directed at me? I do not think you even read my post. My post was directed at the author(s) of this article. Sarah Palin is not the subject of this article, therefore I made no mention. Maybe you should read my comment again.
I have no idea what you are talking about. Do you mean that Michelle looks stylish? That she is technically not a lawyer since her license was suspended? That there are far more important things to talk about? That if you think Sarah Palin was the only politician to ever use DONATED money for clothing then you are probably a left wing ideologue who can only see things from a narrow viewpoint. Or that the Obamas biggest recipients of their charity were his fine church and the Black Caucus, and only when he was running for president. I clearly posted the comment I was referencing and it wasn’t YOURS,it was a comment about Sarah Palin’s clothes again! Are you paranoid or what? That is what I was writing about.

“===I hear he got the Russians to agree to a nuclear disarmament deal===”
I hear there are multiple posts on that subject on this site, so we can discuss the nuclear disarmament topic to our hearts’ content there.
“He did? I heard he got Russia to agree to discuss a nuclear disarmament deal. Maybe I heard wrong.” Axey, you crack me up! I’m a big fan. And of course you are exactly right.

Nobody nosed around the 18 year old daughters life. She was dragged onstage and displayed by her rambling idiot mother for political reasons. A teenage mommy preaching abstinence is a ready made joke and no nosing or further writing is needed.

She was 17 at the time. Every news agency in the country was in AK digging dirt on the family. And the Obamas drug their children onstage too. For political reasons. Are they fair game?

Posted by: Axey | July 7, 2009, 11:59 am 11:59 am

Who CARES about what the obama’s are wearing. They are fake and I, for one, am sick and tired of the media displaying a $345.00 skirt the little darlings are wearing, when the middle income taxpayers are having a hard time putting food on the table. Michelle obama is fake and I can’t stand the media sucking up to them.
barack hussein obama’s poll numbers are dropping like a meteor. WONDER WHY??
Michelle and her little darlings stayed over a week in Paris to shop!! WOW- now that is news and it is helping OUR economy. Impeach, impeach, impeach

Since when is J-Crew affordable? Obama thinks I’m rich enough to pay exorbitant taxes, but I can’t afford a J-Crew wardrobe.

MParker, you are quite wrong when you say, “Nobody nosed around the 18 year old daughters life. She was dragged onstage and displayed by her rambling idiot mother for political reasons.” (And I’m ignoring your rude characterization of Sarah Palin, because I leave the mocking to folks like you and Danita.) Yes, people were nosing around in the girl’s life as soon as her mother was announced as a vp candidate. Rumors began to immediately swirl and be reported that baby Trig was actually her baby. So there was intense interest in her social life as well as her mother’s and lots of innuendo tossed about, with remarks about the “convenient” timing of the girl’s absence from school with mono or some such ailment (because conspiracy theorists were convinced this was the time period when she was actually birthing the secret baby and handing it off to mom to pretend to have birthed). It was immediately not pretty. Knowing they could not hide her pregnancy under such scrutiny, they announced it quickly. She did not ask for the publicity any more than the Obama girls did, but neither Obama nor Palin should be barred from public life as the only way to shield their children from intense and unnecessary scrutiny.

Well, good thing our media is all over these CRITICALLY IMPORTANT stories.
I hope Tapper can find out what books the Obama kids read before bed. They may be VERY CONTROVERSIAL.

Three reporters to cover one little girl’s clothing. Between this and the MJ memorial I can see why there is no one left to cover health care, China, Afghanistan, etc.

Posted by: ohcomeonhussein | July 7, 2009, 2:39 pm 2:39 pm

Seriously, attacking an 11 year old for her taste in clothing? How mature of you.

Posted by: FLRealist | July 7, 2009, 2:40 pm 2:40 pm

Wow, the press is dead. First the Washington Post has the balls to ADVERTISE their rates to lobbyists and now it takes three reporters to cover a little girl’s dress at ABC? RIP American press. What’s the matter, the CIA stopped giving you direction and money?

Wow Jake – this piece is almost as good as your piece on the sea bass served at Al Gore’s daughter’s wedding (which by the way I thought was a terrific piece of literary genius)… Oh fyi, there were a few soldiers killed today in Afganistan..

Posted by: Concerned American | July 7, 2009, 2:59 pm 2:59 pm

And people wonder why traditional news outlets are dying left and right. Hard-hitting stories like this, with three, count ‘em: THREE reporters, can’t POSSIBLY be a symptom of the problem.

Really? Seriously? This is news? Was there ever even ONE story about the expense of any of the bush twins’ clothing? This First Lady and her kids mostly wear stuff an average person could buy without having to give up food for a month. So they have some expensive stuff. They’re the freaking FIRST FAMILY. Did you know that a new Senator (Franken) was sworn in today? Or that 100′s are being killed in China? We’ve stepped up raids in Afghanistan? But beside this infernal MJ media circus, skirts are the story of the day?

To whomever posted this mierda about Michele’s law license:
Michele did not have her license suspended. I found this:
“In Illinois, voluntary inactivations require an order of the court to commence the cancellation of malpractice insurance, annual licensing fees and the continuing education credits otherwise required by law.”
But say, if you have kids and you’re not currently in practice, maybe you don’t want to pay for malpractice insurance you aren’t using, or take classes you don’t need right now.
So she CHOSE to do this.
And by the way, Palin’s clothes were purchased by the RNC, who were quite pissed off and had her make an inventory and return it to them. I think using campaign funds to outfit an entire family in high-rent duds including extremely expensive purses and stuff for a 7-year old actually IS a first among candidates for high office, liberal OR conservative.

Posted by: bodhikai | July 7, 2009, 3:24 pm 3:24 pm

Leave these children alone!
ABC News should be ashamed of themselves for focusing on the skirt label of a little middle school girl.
How can you expect to be taken seriously as journalists?

Posted by: Winnie | July 7, 2009, 3:38 pm 3:38 pm

The Nightly News is dead. Perhaps ridiculous stories such as this is the reason Bloggers are being called on in news conferences. They are the only entity actually reporting on the news. So, continue reporting on stories like this, and eventually you will part of the almost 10% unemployment, because no one will pay attention to you anymore.

Posted by: Ivorywyne | July 7, 2009, 3:38 pm 3:38 pm

Have you no shame? Isn’t there enough political news out there to be reported.
The last time I checked, the people of Iran were still struggling to get their voices heard in the world.

Posted by: Saybah | July 7, 2009, 3:41 pm 3:41 pm

You have got to be kidding! With what is happening in China, Iran, Honduras and other important news, this is what you waste your time reporting on? This isn’t even worthy of a middle school newspaper. I don’t care what they spend their personal money on. I don’t comment on what other people spend on their children’s clothing, period.

Posted by: gram | July 7, 2009, 3:42 pm 3:42 pm

I think you guys may have missed the boat on his article as this is what I took from it:
“If so, Malia, who just turned eleven this past weekend, may have inherited her mother’s taste in sometimes expensive clothes. Most recently Mrs. Obama, who at times is also known to wear affordable J Crew, was seen sporting a pair of $540 kicks at a community service event at a DC food bank.”
Wearing a $540 pair of tennis shoes to the food back for those less fortunate- I think the point was the IRONY maybe?

Posted by: kmday | July 7, 2009, 3:43 pm 3:43 pm

Are you seriously posting this as NEWS? You think there aren’t plenty of other kids out there wearing similar skirts? If there wasn’t a market, the clothing line wouldn’t exist. And if your dad is making close to half a million a year, you can be treated to a pricey skirt every once in awhile. I’m betting we’ll see it on Sasha in a few years cause Michelle strikes me as a hand-me-downer.
The kids are on the national stage, like it or not. And if she’s wearing women’s sizes at 11, then her clothes are going to be more expensive.

Posted by: kimmah | July 7, 2009, 3:44 pm 3:44 pm

i was lending some benefit-of-the-doubt as maybe you were reporting on all the money they were spending on clothes or taking their kids on international business trips at the expense of the tax payers, but if so the title should have read differently!

Posted by: kmday | July 7, 2009, 3:47 pm 3:47 pm

So, mparker, thank you for explaining the rules. If a politician brings his/her children on a stage with them, those children are fair game. BTW, if you want to discuss rambling idiots, let’s talk about Obama without a teleprompter or Biden almost any time.

Posted by: Lynn | July 7, 2009, 3:47 pm 3:47 pm

Expensive taste in clothes??? Got a source for that, Mr. “Journalist”? ABC should stick to the news.

“Child of rich parents wears expensive clothes”
This may be literally the dumbest thing I have ever read.
Also, I’ll bet Barack Obama has some really expensive clothes, but you’ll never see an article about them: after all, men wear expensive clothes because they’re important and need to look professional, while women wear expensive clothes because their second X chromosome makes them utterly frivolous.

Posted by: Evan | July 7, 2009, 5:00 pm 5:00 pm

She is 11 years old and nearly six feet tall, going through her awkward phase in front of the world. She will be in women’s clothes, with the associated price tags, for the rest of her life. I’m sure her mother managed the selection of her outfits for this trip and all others. Be a person and just leave the child alone.

Posted by: Gail | July 7, 2009, 5:26 pm 5:26 pm

My children have clothes (mostly J Crew) that originally were (way over)priced at hundreds of dollars. But I buy them on sale at an outlet department store for pennies on the dollar. So the “$295 cashmere sweater” my 18 year old loves really only cost me $17.95. Maybe that’s what Mrs. Obama does. Or maybe she has money and likes to spend it on her children just like mothers all over the world.
On the other hand, for special occasions, I have spent $200 (or more) on a fancy dress for one of my children. It’s my money. I earned it. I get to spend it as I please.
This is life. Not a scandal.

Posted by: Kathryn | July 7, 2009, 6:28 pm 6:28 pm

I think the Obama girls should be talked about as much as possible. They are not off limits as far as I am concerned. Sarah Palin’s children were not off limits, President Bush’s girls were not off limits. Remember what they say about paybacks. The economy going to hell in a hand basket and no one seems to care so why not focus on the President’s family.

Posted by: Dana | July 7, 2009, 8:05 pm 8:05 pm

Countrygirl: What are you talking about? Anything the Obama’s spend on clothes is thier own money, taxpayers do not outfit the family. And for the record the three twits who wrote this “article” don’t are speculating as to the cost of the clothes. (Speculating means that they don’t really know what they are talking about.) If you want to be upset about something it makes a lot more sense to be upset about something REAL. Going off about imaginary things will have people questioning you sanity.

DISGUSTING!

We didn’t speak as much about the older Bush girls who were out partying while their father held our nations highest office. Get real, these are children, and Michelle is the wife of our President.
Let’s admire them for their good taste, and then we can overlook your bad taste.
