Obama Rallies the Troops and Money With DeMint’s “Waterloo”

ABC News'Sarah Tobianski reports:

What started as a battle of words Monday when President Obama hit back at Republican Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina for saying health care could be Obama’s “Waterloo," has now turned into a full blown war to rally support and money behind the president’s health care policies.

Obama’s “Organizing for America” and MoveOn.org are ramping up their campaigns to curtail – what they say – are the same old Republican “scare tactics and outright lies to stall reform.”

The groups are flooding the inboxes of supporters with requests for money and calls to members of Congress as it tackles reform in the days leading up to recess.

“With Congress only days away from finalizing their plans for reform, it's time to stand up with the President and fight back against this disastrous brand of old-style politics,” says Mitch Stewart, Director of Organizing for America.  “So we need as many people as possible to publicly support the President's principles for health care reform and call on Congress to act.”

In the coming days, Organizing for America will also collect signatures of supporters on its website and publish them in papers across the country.

On Monday, the president took a similar tactic first hand.

“This isn't about me,” Obama said at a Children’s hospital. “This isn't about politics. This is about a health care system that is breaking America's families, breaking America's businesses and breaking America's economy. And we can't afford the politics of delay and defeat when it comes to health care. Not this time, not now. There are too many lives and livelihoods at stake.”

This likely won’t be the last time we see Democrats using DeMint’s words, painting Republicans as being too political, as they attempt to win the health care battle.

So… it IS about Obama and not about health care. Got it!

Ruh ruh….2012 may be a battle of the last GOPer standing (Pawlenty, Huck?)
“ANCHORAGE, Alaska — An independent investigator has found evidence that Gov. Sarah Palin may have violated ethics laws by accepting private donations to pay her legal debts.
The report obtained by The Associated Press says Palin is securing unwarranted benefits and receiving improper gifts through the Alaska Fund Trust, set up by supporters.
An investigator for the state Personnel Board says in his July 14 report that there is probable cause to believe Palin used or attempted to use her official position for personal gain because she authorized the creation of the trust as the “official” legal defense fund.
The fund aims to help Palin pay off debts stemming from multiple ethics complaints against her, most of which have been dismissed. Palin says she owes more than $500,000 in legal fees.”

Until then, I ain’t eatin’ the cake.

When one is on the Battlefield for positive change, one cannot pause to worry and fret about “allegdely” sinking poll numbers…. that is a “trojan horse”, For One cannot worry about the Separated Self, when they have the People’s business to do!
In regards to the current debate, Healthcare costs are one of the culprits Directly related to our collapsing economic condition. We are drowning in this quicksand which calls for urgent and immediate address and attention. This time is Urgent, the time is Now!
It is hard to Change old habits of greed and selfish power to one of cooperation and a public good for all. Pres. Obama is going up against a Monster of Greed and Corruption that does not want to give up its power. This monster will Lie, Steal and Deceive. We the people must not allow this Monster of Corruption to continue to have its way, which will only continue to bankrupt the United States. We must stand firm with Pres. Obama who truly represents the Change the people need and have voted for.
If we in our own lives can do more than One thing at a time, so can Congress, and it is their duty and business to do so. If those in Congress want to continue to be a Do Nothing Congress, than we must elect leaders who can do Something for the whole of humanity and not just the separated self or special interest party.
Members of Congress have great insurance coverage, and a cushy salary. They do not live under the fear of unemployment and no insurance coverage. They are there to work on Behalf of the People, so they too, do not have to live in that fear… Yet, while in the care and leadership of the GOP, Congress has done a miserable job on taking care of the people and now the GOP want to obstruct the Democrats from putting into laws that which will benefit the people and grow the economy, not bankrupt it. But people are turning a deaf ear to the deceitful “Wizards of Oz” for they want us to continue to travel their yellow brick road of deception. We must become immune to their lies and vigilant to their deception if we are to make progress towards sanity again.
I call on those of goodwill to work, speak-up and Stand firm for Change and for transformation — towards a more just and equitable government for all.

Dems control the House and the Senate. What does he care what Republicans say and think?
Oh, right…He wants Repbulicans on-board so that WHEN this is an epic failure (see, “stimulus” package), he can point to “bi-partisan support.
While not calling them out directly, this is also a shot at Dems who at this point do not support ObamaCare (and they will be targeted accordingly in ads).
There was a nice display of bi-partisanship over the weekend from (state) Governors in the form of non-support of ObamaCare due to the additional strains that will be placed on state budgets.

BTW ~ I really hate ABBA. Waterloo is a horrible song.
Now, to Obama, it’s personal. He feels attacked. The awkward little boy who was abandoned, first by his father and then by his mother, does not want to fail.
The weird thing, he *likes* feeling attacked. It’s familiar. He can use the victim card he loves to play so skillfully and so often. He is stronger on defense than on offense, though he still can’t throw a baseball.
I’m learning the Obama double-speak, too. Say the opposite of what you mean and act indignant that others are misrepresenting what you say.
In that light, “This isn’t about me,” Obama said… “This isn’t about politics…” Just strike that, reverse it.

But OK Ryan
ROMNEY is running neck and neck with Obama 3 years out. I know Palin will come out clean AGAIN, this one’s really obvious. A legal defense fund is perfectly, well, legal.
Obama Care and Capn Trade are running out of steam. Stimulus is a joke. Our national security is jeopardized by these “deadlines” on Gitmo, Iraq and now Gates puts one on Afghanistan.
An administration of double-speed and double-talk is now doubling down for action before recess. Why???

Yes.
Bush would a good example of how comparing approval ratings between Presidents to predict future approval ratings based on having similar patterns is a fool’s errand.
Why? Because big events can change the polls direction.
Post 9/11 saw the nation rally around Bush.
After Katrina the country soured on him.
Same with Reagan. His approval shot up briefly during the assisination attempt, went down during the recession of 82.
As I have said before, barring a massive event Obama’s approval is likely to be tied to the economy’s performance. which is how it usually is with Presidents.

Posted by: Ryan C | July 21, 2009, 6:03 pm 6:03 pm

Obama is not a push over politician. If Republicans want to make health care about being a power play for their own jobs rather than the best policy for America, Obama is not going to roll over. And the same is true of Democrats who are more concerned about keeping the health industry dollars coming in, as was seen when Obama’s allies began running commercials in Democratic states to sway senators on the fence.
This is what a President does – they do not get a vote in Congress, but good ones go to the people and get them engaged.

Angellight, you have the monster wrong. You don’t need to be peeking under the bed, and imagining that there is a monster there in the darkness. However, you need to look into the light, on the monster that is out in daylight, with no one fighting against, and that is the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.
And have you forgotten that the Dems have been in control of Congress since 2006. Not to say Republicans are not at fault in Congress, because they are also part of this elite. You talk about getting behind Obama for Healthcare to defeat the Monster of Greed and Corruption. Who is it for you? The drug companies, insurance companies, big oil, health insurance companies, the same old arguments on the left. The difference of your impression of greed, is simple. You want these private sector businesses to fail. You want the government to control them. What you want is hard to define, but you can take elements of an oligarchy, fascism, Marxism, socialism to define it.
You talk about the lies of those who oppose this Socialized Healthcare. But, do you not see what this type of healthcare has done to human beings across the world? Are you too ignorant to see what people in the UK, and France, and Canada go through? Are you ignorant of the facts? Do you simply take what is fed you? Because if you are, and if you do, then you will not see the oncoming disaster.
You get on your soapbox to speak of change and transformation. But you have no idea what change that is. The end of capitalism and the beginning of government control. You talk of bankrupting the US? Have you been awake for the last year? And do you understand your history in this great country? Are you completely unaware of world history? And have you ever read the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights?
Can you simply say, that you are not aware of what is going on in this country, and that you are only too proud to admit that you had no idea you voted for a dictator? And had no clue as to what you would be faced with?
Your Monster is not one under your bed, but right out in front of you everyday, telling you that he is. Stop being scared of the imaginary ones under the bed, and be very afraid of the one in the light. For that is the Monster that will take your Freedom from you.

AMERICA’S NATIONAL HEALTHCARE EMERGENCY!
It’s official. America and the World are now in a GLOBAL PANDEMIC. A World EPIDEMIC with potential catastrophic consequences for ALL of the American people. The first PANDEMIC in 41 years. And WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES will have to face this PANDEMIC with the 37th worst quality of healthcare in the developed World.
STAND READY AMERICA TO SEIZE CONTROL OF YOUR NATIONAL HEALTHCARE SYSTEM.
We spend over twice as much of our GDP on healthcare as any other country in the World. And Individual American spend about ten times as much out of pocket on healthcare as any other people in the World. All because of GREED! And the PRIVATE FOR PROFIT healthcare system in America.
And while all this is going on, some members of congress seem mostly concern about how to protect the corporate PROFITS! of our GREED DRIVEN, PRIVATE FOR PROFIT NATIONAL DISGRACE. A PRIVATE FOR PROFIT DISGRACE that is in fact, totally valueless to the public health. And a detriment to national security, public safety, and the public health.
Progressive democrats the Tri-Caucus and others should stand firm in their demand for a robust government-run public option for all Americans, with all of the minimum requirements progressive democrats demanded. If congress can not pass a robust public option with at least 51 votes and all robust minimum requirements, congress should immediately move to scrap healthcare reform and request that President Obama declare a state of NATIONAL HEALTHCARE EMERGENCY! Seizing and replacing all PRIVATE FOR PROFIT health insurance plans with the immediate implementation of National Healthcare for all Americans under the provisions of HR676 (A Single-payer National Healthcare Plan For All).
Coverage can begin immediately through our current medicare system. With immediate expansion through recruitment of displaced workers from the canceled private sector insurance industry. Funding can also begin immediately by substitution of payroll deductions for private insurance plans with payroll deductions for the national healthcare plan. This is what the vast majority of the American people want. And this is what all objective experts unanimously agree would be the best, and most cost effective for the American people and our economy.
In Mexico on average people who received medical care for A-H1N1 (Swine Flu) with in 3 days survived. People who did not receive medical care until 7 days or more died. This has been the same results in the US. But 50 million Americans don’t even have any healthcare coverage. And at least 200 million of you with insurance could not get in to see your private insurance plans doctors in 2 or 3 days, even if your life depended on it. WHICH IT DOES!
If President Obama has to declare a NATIONAL STATE OF EMERGENCY to rescue the American people from our healthcare crisis, he will need all the sustained support you can give him. STICK WITH HIM! He’s doing a brilliant job.
THIS IS THE BIG ONE!
THE BATTLE OF GOOD Vs EVIL!
Join the fight.
Contact congress and your representatives NOW! AND SPREAD THE WORD!
God Bless You

Nope.

But thanks to people like myself who LOUDLY called out this analysis as fraudulent, he has pulled it.
The guy who wrote the paper had to round up McCain’s total (45.6%) and round down Obama’s (52.9%) to make Rasmussen the most accurate pollster.

It’s the old name for Chicago.

“By the way, where is Waterloo?”
The most famous Waterloo is in Belgium and is where Napoleon was defeated by combined forces of Brits and Prussians.
Interestingly the town Obama rallied in the night before the Iowa caucuses?
Waterloo.

Supporters might want to consider saving any health care campaign contributions they are thinking of making for the higher taxes they likely will have to pay if the democrats’ health care reform legislation(whatever it may be)passes.

I was just kidding. I know where Waterloo is. (Alaska, right?)
I’m just laughing at the assumption that DeMint’s “Waterloo” comment will be widely understood as incendiary by the people Obama’s trying to fire up. Or, for that matter, that Jim DeMint is a devil-man in anyone’s eyes other than maybe a few Dems in his home state.
This is an exercise in nostalgia for David Axelrod and Mitch Stewart. It was a lot easier, however, when you could bash pots and pans and scream “Bush!” “Cheney!” “McCain!” “Palin!”
Jim DeMint? I follow politics pretty closely and I couldn’t pick him out in a police lineup. I don’t think he’s waterboarded anyone recently, and I’m sure you can’t see Russia from his house.

“With Congress and the White House squabbling over health care reform, Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele said on Tuesday he’s not really sure which insurance company covers him.
Asked about his health care coverage at the RNC, Steele told CNN, “BlueCross BlueShield, I believe. Or maybe not. I think it’s BlueCross BlueShield.”
“I haven’t had to use the plan too much, thank goodness – although there are days on this job,” he added.”
2010 is gonna be fun.

Fear for your lives because we are in EMERGENCY and CRISIS like the world has never seen before! Act now!! Question later!
Posted by: paul | Jul 21, 2009 6:39:36 PM
This is such a huge emergency that 0bama hasn’t even taken the time to read what this bill is even about.
On a conference call, LAST EVENING, he states “The time for talk is through”. Then, DURING THE SAME CALL, he’s asked about the bill’s call for outlawing private insurance. His response: “You know, I have to say that I am not familiar with the provision you are talking about.”
There you have it. 0bama stating that the need to debate is over, yet he can’t back up his continual deception of “If you like your present health care plan you can keep it, period.”
This shows, just like the stimulus plan, that there has been absolutely no thoughtful analysis on what the consequences will be if this rushed disaster passes. Zero.

This is the reason that 0bama’s main obstacles are not Republicans but rather the “Blue Dog Democrats”. He tries deflecting by demonizing DeMint but make no mistake he has HUGE problems with moderate Dems.
They’re getting increasingly nervous that they might get caught going down with the sinking SS0bama.

Obama stated he was going to the blogasphere because the guys in the main stream media “distort” the facts. That has to be a sting to the MSM as there are very few there that have questioned anything Obama has said. So while he is getting his far left base aroused unemployment continues to rise, houses continue to be foreclosed on and debt as a nation continues to mount. In any other time we would be real worried about how we were going to live, feed and clothe our kids but no, the king of diversion; President Obama, is diverting everyone away from the real immediate problems to stir up some skirmish between the classes.
Amazing.

“Real estate agents say there is good news in the economy right now. Home sales are on the rise. And they give the President’s and Governor’s stimulus programs . . . the credit.
“Real estate agent Patsy Martin sold 13 homes in June. “I had more closings in June than in any single month in my seven year career in real estate. So I think that’s a good indicator that things are moving positively.”
“Martin says the stimulus plan is working in South Georgia.
“They’ve broken ground on several new sites out here just within the last month or two, so . .. we have made a good investment.

The major approach is called the Recovery and Reinvestment plan. It is coming on stream now (see the article on Georgia real estate where the realtors give direct credit to the Recovery initiatives) and job creation will accelerate through into 2010. By November of 2010, if we all work toward it, we should see things progressing toward a healthier, recovering economy.

If the results follow the rhetoric then yes, the stimulus MIGHT help. Don’t lose sight that we were sold on the pork-laden stimulus being needed immediately or else we would be headed over a cliff.
As for any other 0bama proposals helping the economy recover, if this health care reform and Cap&Trade both pass be prepared for even LARGER job losses.
The 5.4 percent health care “surtax” coupled with C&T’s across-the-board increases in energy costs is a recipe for killing jobs. Not a good plan to initiate during this deep recession.

Posted by: beetfeet | July 21, 2009, 11:00 pm 11:00 pm

Danita, you need to read the Atlanta Journal Constitution online, if you want to have a better sense of the economy in Georgia. They have 10% unemployment, the most bank closings of any state this year, and the governor just announced another 5% across the board budget cut for the state government, complete with mandatory furloughs for government workers including those who work for universities. While it is not the disaster that, say, Michigan is, Georgia is not a stimulus-inspired economic powerhouse, either. One news story does not a full-blown recovery make.

Posted by: moderate | July 21, 2009, 11:03 pm 11:03 pm

Recovery.gov tells me that Georgia may have received $2 billion but most of that is to “save” jobs in education. Only $86 million for housing and community development and none of that allocated yet. Perhaps $150 million spent on jobs though that is mostly training and temp jobs. No transportation yet and no construction though “modernization and repairs” will take place in schools.
So at best we have “saving” of government jobs so far. No creation of capital and opportunity that will spur real economic growth.

In Waterloo Blucher saved the day for Wellington and Marshall Ney came in late for Napoleon.
Republicans may well be led by a latter day Napoleon – Jim DeMint may have misjudged the needs of the American working class.
The huge wealth transfer to the top 5% of USA has left us broke, without jobs and without health and security safety net. Bush was the Louis XIV of USA – make the rich richer, deplete the middle class and poor much more poor. Why not tax the preferred classes of the past – Wall Street greed merchants, Right Wing warhawks, and the offshore tax haven rich corporate America.
Now the chickens have come home to roost – 10% unemployment, 40 million un insured, 6 million home foreclosures, crumbling infrastructure, and 15 big states with huge budget deficits, two unfinished wars and a bankrupt industrial base. This is the legacy of Bush’s compassionate Republican conservatism.

This rushing is so revealing — only a total fool rushes something like health care reform. The issue needs to be discussed further. I hope and pray that the Congress will not pass Obama’s boondoggle bill.
It is morally wrong to pass such legislation this quickly.
And this “I want it..” nonsense from Obama — who does he think he is? He’s not the dictator of the country. He’s not a king. He’s one of the three branches of government. This “entitlement” mentality of Obama was always repulsive, but it is getting more and more vindictive and ruthless.

“June marked the third straight month that economic indicators rose more than expected. More plans to build homes, fewer pink slips being handed out and higher stock prices sent the New-York based Conference Board’s index of leading economic indicators up 0.7% last month beating analysts’ expectations of a 0.4% increase. Of the 10 economic indicators that the index tracks, seven gained ground in June with the interest rate spread leading the pack.”

Excuse me America but we have become a nation of “instant gratification.” That is how we got here in the first place. Everyone wanted things they could not afford. This economy did not go down the tubes in six months but in the last several years. It will not rebound in 6 months or maybe even two years but it is on the road to recovery. Slow but improving. The jobs will be the last to recover, infortunately, because many will never come back. There are many programs out there for people to re-educate and re-train themselves for jobs of the future. It is time we spent our efforts in learning what they are and how to get them. This is what the stimulus is providing us with and many other programs which will help us become self sufficient. In my state, new housing us up 9% in the last two months and we just received our stimulus money. Housing sales of homes already built are up 6%. There are signs but we will not be back to where we should be for a long time and people need to understand this. Anyone who has been through a recession knows this but to expect everything to turn around in 6 months is foolish. Of course, you can listen to the naysayers, there are many out there but I think you should listen to the people who know what they are talking about not the ones who want our president to fail That to me is not very American. We are in this together, Republicans, Democrats, and Independents and we need to realize that we need to pull together not apart.

Don’t take your eye off the issue. The issue is the well being of America and the House bill will kill us.
Disparate treatment of businesses under Healthcare Reform Act
The bills under consideration result in disastrous disparate treatment of businesses and small business owners.
The legislation under consideration mandates businesses with a payroll of $400,000 or more to pay insurance premiums for employees. The size of a company’s payroll is not an indicator of whether the company makes money or the size of its profit margin. Remember, regardless of the size of a company’s payroll some barely break even, some make a modest profit.
Furthermore, businesses that are labor intensive, typically in service industries, that is with more employees rather than fewer, will be decimated by this legislation. Let me provide an example. Assume you have a company, like mine, with 150 employees all who make between $8 and $10 per hour, that generates about $150,000 in profit, and you have a company of 20 employees that generates $150,000 in profit.
The result of the healthcare legislation is that a company like mine will be mandated to pay $360,000 ($200 per month per employee for insurance premiums) per year in insurance premiums. Thus putting me and others like me into bankruptcy immediately. The company with 20 employees will pay $48,000 per year. They might survive.
The clear point is that the proposed healthcare legislation is worded so that small businesses with many employees will be crushed. That will be disastrous to our country and I can’t imagine this is what is intended.
Pay for any plan with national sales tax. That way, everybody contributes.

How wonderful that there are still some democrats left with some common sense that will not allow this healthcare mess to pass! The healthcare pitch Obama gave last night was like a bad used car salesman. All fluff, no real details. I should give him credit though, it IS hard to pitch something you haven’t even seen or read yet with such passion. Sounded almost like the stimulus pitch only with a few sad stories intertwined. We can all see how much the stimulus cost and how well it has not worked.
I think finally Americans are looking past the glimmer of Obama and actually hearing the empty words of a candidate and not actually a leader.
