The Audacity of Hops
At 6 pm ET tonight, President Obama will hoist a cold one with Harvard Prof. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and Cambridge Police Sgt. Jim Crowley, hoping a "teachable moment" can come from their war or words two weeks ago and the president's comments eight days ago that the Cambridge police "acted stupidly" by arresting Gates.
The president, we are told, will be drinking Bud Light, Crowley will have Blue Moon, and Gates will have Red Stripe — Red Light and Blue.

Sen. DeMint: GOP Race Could Go Until Convention
Obama Avoids Questions on Contraception Rule
Why can’t we let what our forefathers did in the past fall by the wayside and just get along. Would this have been different media coverage if it had been black police and white man? I dare not as much if any publicity would have came from it.

maybe Obama will learn from this “teachable moment” to keep his racist thoughts and deeds to himself..same applies to Gates. And to the woman who phoned this in..you did the right thing…this is normal behavior for the left wing to go and try to destroy someone thats makes one of their own look like a fool

Nice Photo Op, Slick Barry.
Will you finally offer an apology to Crowley and the Cambridge police?
And no, not your previous statements of the nature “I’m sorry that people got upset” or “I’m sorry that the media are obsessing over this story.”

Glen Ford writes:
“When New York City police went unpunished for killing unarmed Sean Bell in a barrage of 50 bullets, President Obama tersely stated that Blacks should “respect the verdict that came down.” Obama had nothing at all to say when a Bay Area transit cop was video-taped fatally shooting Oscar Grant in the back as he lay face down and handcuffed. And why should Obama have spoken out, anyway? These were not his people. Oh no, they were the problem people, a problem for everybody, but especially for the Better Class of Blacks, who would now have to work even harder to disassociate themselves from the Bells and Grants of Black America.
But the “Skip” Gates case cried out for solidarity. Obama stood up for his class (at least briefly), the political fallout be damned.”

Outstanding idea, cuellar. A duel at dawn then.

“The Audacity of Hops”
–> REALLY good one. Maybe this perfect phrase will put an end to Obama’s “have a beer” solution to real contradiction.
Under Obama’s “have a beer” approach tto quelling all conflict, you’d think He’d be rolling in kegs to the Congress. (Maybe He HAS been rolling kegs in to the Congress — that’d explain the “stimulus”, the joke health care bill, and much more.)

I like that, too. Good one, Jake. Although I think it may be a bit of a rorschach test as I see it as poking a bit of fun at those whose undies get all in a bunch at the idea of hope and/or hops. As in GASP!! How DARE he??What’s a teachable moment?? I don’t know but it sure can’t be good. LOL.

Too bad Obama won’t offer Gates’ neighbor Lucia Whalen a brew.
Instead the Liberal brownshirts have mobilized to destroy her…just like that plumber from Ohio.

Obama is an elitist and a classist — that is obvious. He can’t help himself.

I am not shocked by president Obama’s original comments as his very roots come from growing up “politically” in the Chicago area. Unfortunately, his reaction to the situation in Cambridge was not in the best interest of the country. This is where most politicians fail the American people time after time. We elect government officials to act in “our” best interest and instead they make decisions (and comments) based on their received campaign contributions, personal special interest groups, and most importantly, how to get re-elected. It’s no wonder that the approval rating for Congress has dropped 11 points since May and the president’s is dropping as well. I wonder what the poll numbers would be if the question was “How many American people have benefited from the $750,000,000,000 stimulus package?” So, in conclusion, it doesn’t matter if you misspeak, make mistakes, or cause mistrust. It all adds up to “misrepresentation” from most of our elected government officials. I for one think it’s time to hold all of them accountable.

‘Uncle’,
You shouldn’t be shocked over the President’s comments regarding the Gates incident. You need only to read his first book to understand his remarks. He has had a chip on his shoulder since his youth and it is a reflex action on his part to defend every misconceived racial injustice he becomes aware of.
He was being dihonest the next day when he said he ‘continued’ to believe Mr. Gates also shared some of the blame for the incident.
Prior to that statement, he had absolutely NO criticism of Mr Gates….it was clear in his press conference he squared the blame on the police officer.
Of course, the press ignored his misleading statement.

Won’t the trade protectionists be up in arms that Professor Gates is not “Drinking American”?
President Obama and Sgt. Crowley are “drinking American” but Skip Gates is “drinking Jamaican”.

Anyone who knows beer knows you can’t call Blue Moon “blue”, because it’s a crappy version of a Belgian “white” beer.
And don’t bring hops into this. American mass-produced beers don’t use hops. They might use some sort of hop substitute, but it’s a far cry from real beer.
The White House staff should support the local economy and find a microbrew.

For heaven’s sake, isn’t he the President of the United States? Doesn’t he have enough to do without wasting time on this pointless exercise? What is his next task-addressing the decisions of the Fairfax Couty school board? What about the rest of the country? What about Afganistan,Iran,North Korea, the economy, etc?Every day brings more evidence that he has little concept of what being an executive means.Either he lacks common sense or lacks the intelligence that people claim he has.If he is so smart why isn’t he a Phi Beta Kappa?

Trying to turn this into a “teachable moment” is simply an effort for Obama and Gates to save face. The only teaching that needs to be done is for those two to think clearly before they speak.
The two also need to emphasize that the police do a dangerous job for us made even more impossible by the thoughtless jerks they have to put up with.
A great injustice has been done to Sgt. Crowley. Gates and Obama have hurt every police dept. in the country, and their ability to safely and effectively deal with all communities. A great injustice was also done to the 911 caller.
Obama has conveyed the impression that somehow Sgt. Crowley was perpetuating “historical wrongs”. The whole assumption for the beer meeting is wrong, and does a tremendous disservice to Crowley and the policing community.
What do you think will happen the next time police are called to any situation possibly involving an African American male?
Do you really think anyone’s going to call 911 again in a similar situation? Why would anybody take that risk now?
As was said below, all deference and apologies need to go to Crowley. When he’s satisfied, Obama and Gates will be free to go about the rest of their day. That’s the best way for Obama to correct the misperceptions he so recklessly contributed to.
Sgt. Crowley and others like him are charged with keeping the peace, and we the people grant them the authority to use their judgment and discretion to do it. Whether the prez or anyone else would have made a different decision is immaterial. All of that is only after-the-fact second guessing, from the easy comfort of ten days later.

Buy American Obama! So many people think you have a grudge against the US and this is one small way you could prove them wrong!. You should choose from product made in the USA from America’s largest brewer: Pabst Brewing Company.
They could select from various product, depending on their preferences,: Schlitz, St.Ides, PBR, Country Club, Champale, and many others.
Something to suit all their varied tastes can be found made in America and owned by Americans! Come on Obama!
ps: drinking Sam Adams, as suggested by some, might be considered elitist by working-class and inner-city Americans. This problem could be solved by drinking a Pabst product!

Since you seem to be calling Conan a liar, did you defend Palin with such ferocity when David Letterman lied about her and her daughter?
Posted by: Traffic Cop Timmy | July 30, 2009, 3:24 pm 3:24 pm
I find it interesting how hard some people are on Obama. Why weren’t people this hard on Bush when he was messing up every other day? He was a complete failure as a president and you folks must have been busy watching Nascar and just didn’t notice.
It is also interesting to read comments that claim Obama and Gates are wrong and Crowley is right. Gates was at his house and was taken in after it was proven that it was his house. I think that it was to “put him in his place”. Why else would they have taken him in? It says a lot about Sgt Crowley. He may not be racist, but I think that he was trying to teach Gates a lesson. That is not his job.
And to the other ridiculous comment that Obama has had a “chip on his shoulder” since his youth. He was raised by white people! He obviously loved/loved his white family members and I don’t understand why certain people try to make Obama seem like an angry black man.
I think that when people dislike Obama and criticize him so much, it all comes down to racism.
Most people support Obama and I admire his “teachable moments”.

“did you defend Palin with such ferocity when David Letterman lied about her and her daughter?”
I was busy defending Letterman from the lies the Palins were telling about the jokes he had told.
How did the work out by the way?
Oh yeah…
Letterman saw some of his best ratings in years
And Caribou Barbie quit her job.

Only in America could a small-town cop get the jump on the President of the United States and an elitist scholar, where he ends up holding all of the power. So whatever the outcome, God Bless America!
