J House, President Obama is attempting to get international support against Iran (including the support of Russia) and negotiate Iran away from pursuing nuclear weapons so he doesn’t have to use the alternative of ‘bombing them back into the stone age’ which would kill many innocent civilians.
Having just seen the Bush administration and his neo-con think tankers kill hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, I think every tactic short of bombing them is worth pursuing.
J. House . . ..
If you were paying attention you also noticed President Obama in two separate addresses from Turkey and Egypt speak directly to the Islamic populations including those in Iran and speaking strongly for the common person, democracy and families, for acceptance and understanding – and against extremism and terrorism of all kinds.
It is a truly exceptional step.
The Russian economic students were less than impressed with Obama’s teleprompter speech. Even the Russians (and Europeans)have warning us that we’re spending too much money. It’s the road to self destruction.
from AP . . ..
“His words appeared to have a strong impact on the likely future leaders at the New Economic School.
“He speaks in such a way that he doesn’t hide the problems behind the words,” said Mikhail Filkin, a 20-something graduate of the school, founded in the early 1990s. “He was very persuasive.”
“Even the Russians (and Europeans)have warning us that we’re spending too much money.”
The war in Afghanistan bankrupted the Russians, just as George Bush’s war against Iraq drove the United States further and further into debt and bankrupted the country to China.
The global economic collapse was probably not because of this spending, but the collapse did happen during at the end of all the Bush spending – and it was worldwide.
Every country in the world is now wrestling with layoffs, unemployed people, factory closures, layoffs in the primary resource industries and so on.
The question becomes – can a society based on gross consumption be sustained or do we have to move to cleaner power, smarter use of resources and less greed, consumption and waste?
That’s wonderful advice coming from Russia – a country with their own mafia, black market for arms, drugs, women… Yes, we need to listen to them. They’re like totally enlightened and ethical.
More dribble from the land of the unicorns.

There are a couple of aspects of the, um, “discussions” and “debates” in these comment areas for articles around the Internet that has become crystal clear, if disappointingly so. That is, some people — but not all, thank goodness, or I wouldn’t waste my time with tripe — on both sides of these questions aren’t the least bit interested in calm discussion and reasoned debate. Each has the Received Truth, in Holy Writ, and anyone who disagrees is an instrument of evil . . . and, in the Holder’s of the Received Truth vision, downright stupid. Another aspect that often borders on the astonishing is the many prejudices that arise. I know two Caucasian Americans who work abroad, and each is seeking citizenship in another country — and, if they succeed in that quest, each has said he plans to legally renounce his US citizenship. Why? Both are quite open about it, and though they don’t know each other, they share the reason: Neither can STAND the idea of a “X-” President. Other friends think Bush should be tried, convicted, and at the very least imprisoned for life, because they claim he did absolutely nothing good. What about his vastly increasing medical aid to Africa? That, at the very least, counts with most of us. I enjoy and learn from the thoughtful comments one can find, though it’s too bad to have to dig through diatribes to find them. “As they say, “My mind’s made UP! Don’t confuse me with the FACTS!” Sigh . . .

I would strongly suggest the the First Lady consider championing the fight against human trafficking if she can break a way from her world tour and her vegetable garden. Time’s a wasting. It’s been almost 6 months and she still has not taken up a cause. Wind goes out of T. Boone Pickens’ Texas-size wind-farm plan
Two years ago onetime Texas oil baron T. Boone Pickens unveiled plans to build a 4,000-megawatt wind farm big enough to power 1.3 million homes. The projected cost: $10 billion. Last year he ordered 667 wind turbines for the farm. It was all part of his ambitious “Pickens Plan” to wean the nation from foreign oil.
Then the economic slump hit, and Pickens’ hedge funds lost billions of dollars. Still Pickens “spent a good six months insisting the effort would still move forward, albeit with significant delays,” Reuters notes.
Not anymore. Turns out building the wind farm was one thing, but hooking it up to the grid was another. Picken’s company, Mesa Power was “unable to borrow $2 billion for transmission lines to link the wind farm to the Texas grid,” the Washington Post reports.

Yes, President Obama’s speeches directly to the people of the Islamic world were exceptional even if you’re too full up of your own ideology to see it.
Reaching out directly to the people, the moderates, the families and speaking out against the extremists and the terrorists was brilliant. And so much more effective and helpful than Bush’s ‘us or them’ alienating idiocy.
Sad you’re unable to see it. Fortunately the United States is comprised of many thoughtful and decent people, and not a majority of ranting, bitter ideologues.

And what about these families and moderates? Who exactly is Onama speaking to? Brilliant or listening to himself talk?
Do you think any of these people would care about Americans if we weren’t sending them billions in aid and buying their oil?
It’s a fool’s paradise in which you live. You can’t make people sing “we are the world” in case you haven’t figured that out yet.

BTW, danita, my comments concern Islam in the Middle East – not “contemporary Islam” in general. The original comment from J. I doubt you’ll find much flexibility within those countries concerning human rights, especially with Muslim women.

They are indeed not evil people (your words, not mine). However, evil resides within all of us, danita. We are not inherintly good. Laws and justice keep us in check. When the scales are tilted in favor of men in a society, you end up with injustice – even in “normal” families. And I am reasonable sure that normal Islamic families are victims of abuse daily. Fathers, husbands, brothers are all doing bad things to the women of these countries. And it is not about religion. That’s the justification.
“President G. W. Bush that you insult so freely kept your cowardly butts safe for both of his terms in office”
Except for 9/11.
Ya know that thing that happened in his first term that killed 3000 Americans.
Also in his first term he decided to invade a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 resulting is the international community backing away from cooperating with us on the war on terror and the deaths of 4000+ American soldiers and counting.
Hooray for cowardly idiocy!

I stopped trusting T.Boone Pickens are the shenanigans he pulled here in CA with a ballot proposition.
It was a naked grab at money.
Basically the prop called for utilities in CA to achieve a very high percentage of renewal energy. Sounded sort of green in its wording and intentionally so. But the standard called for was absurd (like 40%)
If the utilities did not meet that standard the state would be required to purchase alternative power from out of state companies.
Guess who has wind farms out of state?

Traffic Cop Timmy—our society has still not completely embraced the equality of women itself. so we shouldn’t cast stones at glass houses. also women throughout Muslim societies are treated differently. your post(s) imply there is a homogeneity throughout the Muslim world and that all women in the Muslim world are abused. you might want to do some anthropological research when making broad, seeping statements of others’ cultures. Muslim women in America, Iran, Palestine are all treated differently than women in Afghanistan.

Thank you Paul. Agree with the glass house remark, which is why I’m trying to point out that we all have evil within us – we are not inherently good – and that is why we have laws and punishment.
Would you say that not all Islam’s problems in this area are due to “religious extremists” or “whack cases”? That in seemingly normal and peaceful Muslim families this goes on. That seems to me to be as much of a generalization as anything. I was awkwardly trying to point this out.
Back to the treaty.
Obama called the treaty a “legally binding agreement.” According to the U.S. Constitution, the U.S. Senate would need to ratify the arms-control treaty to make it binding, legally or otherwise.
Why are we standing down to Russia on nuclear warheads and missiles at the same time Iran and North Korea are escalating their arms races? Back to Carter’s “hug it out” diplomacy…

Don’t confuse me with the FACTS!” Sigh . . .

Whatever your remark means, human trafficking is a serious problem and Russia is heavily involved. The sex slave trade is a horrendous affront to all women and is for the most part ignored by the enlightened liberals.
I would strongly suggest the the First Lady consider championing the fight against human trafficking if she can break a way from her world tour and her vegetable garden. Time’s a wasting. It’s been almost 6 months and she still has not taken up a cause. Seems that she would have had plenty of time to think about what to do being on a paid leave of absence and campaigning with her husband for 2 years before the Inauguration.
Anyway, if you have an actual response to my post about why we would follow the advice of Russia, I’d love to hear it.

And, who did T. Boone Pickens buy the wind turbines from? No other than GE, The GE of NBC “green week”, MSNBC “our job is to help Obama succeed”, The Weather Channel “forecasts mixed with Global Warming propaganda” and more media and entertainment outlets.
The same GE who fervently backed the scurrilous “Cap and Trade” bill which will heavily tax average Americans and fill GE’s coffers.

Yes, and where are these religion of peace leaders who should be speaking out against extremists?
And what about these families and moderates? Oh that’s right, they are busy honor-killing their wives and children (in some cases right here in the good ol’ USA), killing their neighbor because he welched on a deal offering the 14 year old daughter for some goats and cash.

That’s right all the normal families and moderates are busy killing their wives and children.
You really should educate yourself beyond your cliches.
Religious extremists are whack cases whether Islamic, Jewish or Christian. Guess what – you seem to fit into one of those slots.

Iran and Syria want meetings with no preconditions. What a surprise. I was castigated for suggesting that BHO is a mental midget. It looks like the bad guys have been watching his first 6 mons like the Indians on the hillsides watched the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Custer was like BHO, young, good looking, aggressive, arrogant, short sighted and stupid leading his charges into disaster. Just remember as you are hiding under your bed like all the other cowardly liberal democraps when “the one’s” homeland security allows the bad guys in for a repeat of 9/11 that, President G. W. Bush that you insult so freely kept your cowardly butts safe for both of his terms in office

BTW, danita, my comments concern Islam in the Middle East – not “contemporary Islam” in general. The original comment from J. House concerned Egypt and the Middle East, which you conveniently generalize to include the Muslim world so you could make your point. I only brought it back to the original intent.
