Today’s Q’s for O’s WH
ABC News' Yunji de Nies reports: DE NIES: Robert, do you anticipate that there will, in fact, be a meeting here at the White House? I mean, I know that… GIBBS: I think the president hopes so. I think the president hopes that, again, that this is a moment that can be used to discuss these issues.
DE NIES: And when do you expect him to reach out to Mr. Gates?
GIBBS: I said I'd check on that, so I don't know the answer to that.
…. DE NIES: Robert, what's the lesson ? If this is a teachable moment — what does the president want the country to take away from this?
GIBBS: Well, I think, as he said yesterday, and I think as he said today, we — and I think as even he said at the news conference — you had a call come in, and you had an officer respond to a call about a potential break-in.
And as I said yesterday, as well, there was a — there was clearly a point sometime after that where both sides could have stepped back a little bit and maybe we wouldn't have had all of this play out the way it has.
I think he understands the enormity of the job that law enforcement has, and I think he spoke today about the tension that has been — that has been there with, in some African-American communities, with law enforcement, and that working together, in having that dialogue and in communicating, we can make things better for both involved.

“And as I said yesterday, as well, there was a — there was clearly a point sometime after that where both sides could have stepped back a little bit and maybe we wouldn’t have had all of this play out the way it has.”
Gibbs is acting stupidly, again.
The teachable lesson is that the POTUS should not get involved in local law enforcement issues without knowing the facts.
The teachable lesson is that the blacks in America appear to mistrust the police and jump to the conclusion that everyone is racist unless proven otherwise.
If you have already made up your mind on an issue, you will always find what you are looking for… and the POTUS was looking for racism.
Another teachable moment, how NOT to give an apology…

DE NIES: Robert, what’s the lesson ? If this is a teachable moment — what does the president want the country to take away from this?…………..The lesson is this President, like the Vice President can not be allowed to respond without a teleprompter or prior knowledge of the question to be asked. And the next time the media dares ask a non scripted question or softie we are going to “Joe the Plumber” him or her!

I have a teachable moment:
Ask Gibbs to look up “enormity” in a dictionary.
On second thought, he and his boss probably do think “enormity” is the right word to describe the job of law enforcement.

What does the president want the country to take away from this? That was your question? The “country” doesn’t need Obama to tell us what to “take away from this.” What he wants us to take from this is his spin. Won’t work. Why not ask the president what he learned from this since he is the one that decided to interject himself in it by making derogatory comments without knowing the facts.

I think the White House has heard the tapes, and the tapes are very bad. They are now trying to make this go away so the tapes won’t be released to the public. I for one, would like to hear them so I can judge for myself!

Honestly if someone says I acted stupidly, that in no way says that I am stupid. Each of us, no matter how high our I.Q. can honestly say we’ve acted stupidly numerous times in our lives.
Those who want to insist Obama said the police were stupid are liars trying to inflame race relations. Shame on them.
Posted by: Lydia | July 24, 2009, 5:17 pm 5:17 pm
The police did not “act stupidly”, which is what the president said. They acted appropriately as the tape of the arrest will confirm. Obama’s buddy, Skippy Gates, “acted stupidly” and the president supported him rather than the police because Gates is black.

Teachable moments…
In many cases, I think that blacks are at a disadvantage due to perceived racism. I saw this particularly in the military.
When I would go into a superior officer’s office to provide a briefing or attend a meeting, it didn’t always go as I intended. Sometimes things went very badly indeed, and I would leave with a number of dents in my helmet. I would then examine the situation carefully, hoping to find ways to improve my performance in the future. I was operating from the perspective that I had some control over the situation, and over a long career, it worked out for me.
I noted that in the case of some of my black colleagues, and more particularly in the later years, when the same thing would happen to them, rather than engaging in self examination, they would just assume it was racism on the part of the superior officer. This left them at a disadvantage since they would not go through the process needed to improve their performance. The subsequent poor results would be taken as further evidence of racism.
In my opinion, Prof. Gates was seeing racism where there doesn’t appear to have been any. He should examine his actions so he can do better the next time.

It has been reported Gates arrived at his home after flying back from China.
I would think the flight from China is a long one.
Sounds like possible exhaustion or perhaps a type of latent air rage if such a thing exists.
All of this depends of course on how Gates really did conduct himself and how the exchange actually progressed.
I`m trying to imagine arriving home after a long flight from China, travelling in from the airport to find you can`t get into your home, then managing to get into your home – and then finding your being confronted by a cop who thinks you’re a robber and is giving you ‘the first degree’.

Someone needs a refresher course on “teachable moments”:
“Obama’s conciliatory moves marked an abrupt shift from Friday morning, when White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs dismissed a suggestion that the backlash from police groups could be distressing to the White House, given that Obama has enjoyed a positive relationship with the law enforcement community.
“”I think the Fraternal Order of Police endorsed McCain,” Gibbs fired back at reporters, referring to Obama’s Republican opponent in the 2008 election. “If I’m not mistaken.”"

“It has been reported Gates arrived at his home after flying back from China.”
He’d already been back from China for a day. And it seems he WASN’T locked out — at least from the kitchen door — but that he and his driver were fooling with the outside of a front door which supposedly was “jammed”.
The various accounts from Gates, on theroot and on teevee, have been quite varied.
Maybe it WAS an attempt to look like intruders, draw police, and precipitate an incident?

“the reports I’m seeing say he was coming in from the airport havig just arrived home from China ”
It may be a sign of possible sanity if they’re belatedly getting their stories together, especially since Gates’ remarks to the police will wind up on the air.
As of this morning, though, Gates maintained he had flown, that day, from New Jersey to Massachusetts:
“We flew back on a direct flight from Beijing to Newark. We arrived on Wednesday, and on Thursday I flew back to Cambridge. I was using my regular driver and my regular car service. And went to my home arriving at about 12:30 in the afternoon. My driver and I carried several bags up to the porch, and we fiddled with the door and it was jammed. I thought, well, maybe the door’s latched. So I walked back to the kitchen porch, unlocked the door and came into the house. And I unlatched the door, but it was still jammed.”

” Obama didn’t apologize to Chavez (he called him names in fact),”
Yeah, he called Chavez “friend” and all sorts of other terrible things.
He shook Chavez’ hand with a huge smile.
Maybe Obama needs a little more calibrating.

“Gates called the officer a racist without justification. The officer should be disciplined for poor judgment. Gates should be exposed as a racist.”
Gates is LUCKY he’s elderly, rich, and black, and that the officer was a particularly prudent person.
Any UN-rich person so baiting an ordinary cop who’d come to interrupt a door-jimmying would have been lucky to avoid a tasering, or worse.

Only if liars like you are actually believed over what Obama actually said. He never used the word stupid, which would apply to the person, he clearly stated the action was stupid – something he has said about his personal actions in the past. The English language was actually a plank in the 2008 Republican platform, it is pathetic that they appear so unable to comprehend it.

“He never used the word stupid, which would apply to the person, he clearly stated the action was stupid … ”
ANY form of “stupid” is “fighting words”. Obama’s offense clearly was deliberate … as you can tell by how he drew the phrase out.
It was deliberate AND planned, which doesn’t say much for Obama.
Watch the tape again: He’d set up Lynn Sweet to ask the LAST question, and He knew what the question was going to be, and that it was far from having ANYthing to do with the subject — “insurance reform”, or hahaha “health care” — supposedly under discussion, the premise on which He’d demanded network coverage.
Now, He has about as much coverage as ANY showboat could dream of attaining. He shouldda been careful what He wished for, maybe.

There is a story in the LA Times that says the CNN chief has sent an email to Lou Dobbs’ staff stating the birth certificate story is dead. Apparently he was told by Hawaiian officials that all paper copies of original birth certificates were destroyed in 2000-2001. So the computer generated abstract shown on the Internet is all that is available.
Can that be right? I wonder if before destroying all paper copies, they did not record them on micro-fiche, or scan them into an electronic format for archiving in a system such as documentum.
