Coming Up: Kennedy’s Legacy, Health Care, The CIA’s Interrogation Tactics, The Deficit and More
It's been a somber week in Washington, and a pause from the partisanship that is whipping up over several important issues — issues that will be marked by the absence of Ted Kennedy in the U.S. Senate.
Sunday on 'This Week' we'll hear from some of Sen. Ted Kennedy's closest friends from both sides of the aisle — Orrin Hatch, R-Utah and John Kerry, D-Mass. We'll look ahead to the impact of his legacy and the void he leaves behind in the Senate — especially the potential impact on the ongoing battle over health care reform
We'll have a lot to discuss with our roundtable this week, as several issues are gaining momentum as the Congress enjoys its final days of summer break. Not only Ted Kennedy’s legacy and what’s next for health care, but also those controversial CIA torture documents –including Attorney General Eric Holder’s decision to appoint a prosecutor to investigate possible abuses and former Vice President Cheney’s robust defense of the policies.
Liz Cheney joins our expanded roundtable, along with George Will and Sam Donaldson, Gwen Ifill from PBS and Washington Post columnist EJ Dionne.
You won’t want to miss it. See you Sunday.

The rest of this week will probably be slow and mostly focused on memorializing Kennedy (except for the far-right – they’re already trashing everyone in sight). It’s next week that the gloves come off, big time…

George I am so disappointed in the “roundtable” seat that you are constantly offering to Lynn Cheney. This woman has all but called the President of the United States unpatriotic. Furthermore, who is Lynn Cheney? Without her daddy’s name and without being his daughter, she would not sit at anybody’s roundtable other than the Fox’s channel, and everyone knows by now what that channel represents. I won’t be watching, even though I would love to hear from Gwen. Please find reputable quest in the future. Is Lynn Cheney crediable? I think not. It’s her personal agenda, and who needs to listen anymore to these “self-serving, riding coattails” anymore. In the honor of Senator Kennedy, real patriots are Not self-serving, but serves their country.
Posted by: tychisum | August 28, 2009, 10:08 am 10:08 am
I second tychisum’s comment. It is a disgrace to put Lynn Cheney on this panel. She is nothing but a shill for her underground father. When the torture debate arises she will browbeat all of you and dominate the conversation. She will say all sorts of transparently outrageous and lying things and none of you will challenge her because none of you are her partisan opposite. Thanks in advance George for further promoting the noxious idea that torture is an All-American practice.

George I think you should remove yourself from the roundtable discussions. It seems unfair to have a very biased liberal in the position of moderator. That goes for all the other reporting that you do,state the facts and let the viewers decide,,don’t put your liberal spin on everything.
Posted by: Johnny L | August 28, 2009, 3:25 pm 3:25 pm
George, I agree with tychisum and Patrick above — Liz Cheney is a schill and a liar. I won’t watch any show where she appears. Please don’t give this Daddy’s girl any credibility by inviting her on your show. You disappoint me.

Once again Liz Cheney gets a national forum for her Right-wing ideas.
George, do you have the courage to reach ‘Outside the Beltway’ and invite one of us ‘on the left’ to come ‘Inside Washington’ to join your discussion. Add me to your list of ‘Proudly Liberal’ citizens willing to participate.
I disagree with those who say you put a Liberal spin on everything; not true. You ask tough questions [most of the time], usually tougher on your Liberal Guests than on your Conservative ones.
Posted by: 1Swedeman | August 29, 2009, 2:59 am 2:59 am
Lynn Cheney isn’t a radical nutjob.
She’s not more radical on the right as Paul Krugman, Robert Reich or Sam Donaldson is on the left.
The point of a roundtable is to have an array of viewpoints, regardless if they you like them or not. Last time I checked the 1st Amendment still stood.
Posted by: Matt | August 29, 2009, 12:09 pm 12:09 pm
Lynn Cheney does not belong at the table. It is not a 1ST. Amendment issue. It is not Right or Left. I questioned her qualifications last time she was at the table. It appears I am not the only one.
First Amendment right also invokes responsibility. Lynn has not lived up to the second part of the 1ST Amendment. She also has not demonstrated any qualifications as compared to the rest of panelists’.
I miss Huntly Brinkley days. I relied on BBC London to survive WWII, looks like I have to continue with BBC for trustworthy information to supplement PBS.

George,
I, too, will not be watching this week and the reason is Liz Cheney. As long as you’re giving her a platform to play defense for her father would you please ask her at least one good question. How about this one: “Liz, why should anyone believe your father after all the lying he has done in the past?” And George, if you do ask that question, please use the Google to educate yourself first. Search Cheney/Lies and you’ll find many examples to refute Liz’s answer. But of course she’ll deny all of her father’s misdeeds and you won’t be able defend the question.
Posted by: Warren | August 30, 2009, 7:39 am 7:39 am
I am adding my objection to Liz Cheney being on the roundtable. She has no qualifications for that position. Her agenda seems to be solely the defense of her father. She is not an analyst or an expert.

I have just finished watching the Roundtable and I am truly disgusted by the way that Lynne Cheney feels that if she just talks over everyone that her opinion is more valid than anyone else at the table. She won’t let anyone finish there thought or opinion. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Posted by: Patricia Jarus | August 30, 2009, 9:58 am 9:58 am
okay, the bantering between Liz Cheney and Sam Donaldson this week was really annoying. I love this show, but this week ticked me off since these two wouldn’t shut up. The reason I watch this show is because the panelists are usually respectful and don’t interrupt or talk over each other. Other shows don’t have this type of respect. This week, I had to check what channel I was watching…truly a disappointment when the issues facing this country are so monumental.
Posted by: Heather | August 30, 2009, 9:59 am 9:59 am
After watching your Roundtable this week, I felt compelled to send my first comment to any political show. Liz Cheney took a usually polite discourse of differing ideas and turned it into a shouting match. I will never watch another This Week broadcast in which she is a participant. I hope you will reconsider having her as a panelist.

I agree with all that has been said about Liz Cheney. She is rude, a hypocrite, and has no class. George needs a gavel to shut her and others like her up.

I agree with everyone that Liz Cheney does not belong on the round table. I have no issue with her stating her views, but she is as obnoxious and rude as her father in stating her views. Please explain to her that it is a round table, not her show.
Please don’t invite her again!
Posted by: Steve | August 30, 2009, 10:11 am 10:11 am
I agree with the comments opposing Liz Cheney’s inclusion on this panel. She usese it as an opportunity to express her very biased views and to misrepresent the facts, just as her father would. She is arrogant and rude, detracting from the usual good discussions we’ve come to value from this panel.
Even though I often don’t agree with George Wills’ viewpoint I always listen to what he has to say with interest and respect because he illustrates the same for others. This is also true for most other conservatives that have been invited to join the panel. Perhaps you’ve included Liz Cheney because she’s such a contrast to the quiet, respectful, well-informed presence of someone like Gwen Ifil? At any rate Cheney’s presence is offensive and even contradictory to the basis of having such a forum.

liz cheney should not been present the the table to act as a advocate and “spin doctor” for her father who is the architect of the “enhanced interrogation”. George stephanopoulos allowed Miss. Cheney to talk over other guesses and she there fore she received more time to defend her daddy. Shame on George Stephanopoulos and ABC news for not see the obvious! Maybe next week I,ll skip “This Week” on ABC and watch that kind of bais on FOX NEWS.

Hey George , Why is Liz Cheney on your round table ? Is liz qualified ? Is she a journalist ? When compared to DJ Dionne , George Will , Gwen Ifill , or Sam Donalson she seems to come up short . She is neither well reasoned or objective . Her view is that of a hard right partisan and is neither enlightening or even interesting . In spite if this you let her dominate the time available .

Liz (note: not Lynn the wife) Cheney was so rude, disruptive and interruptive that a meaningful exchange of viewpoints was impossible. I look forward to this Sunday morning show but this morning I was furious over Liz Cheney’s continual talking over other panel guests. Of course it’s a 1st Amendment right to speak, but let others speak as well, Liz! Obviously she’s not smart enough to realize that her actions only hurt her viewpoints, not help them. I hope Liz Cheney is never invited back on George’s usually wonderful show.

I had the awful experience after not watching this week for awhile to turn it on this morning to of all people; Liz Cheney. Why oh why do you give this woman a platform? Many thanks though to Sam Donaldson who was the only one to challenge her by having to talk over her while everyone else sat silent. I will not be watching again! Sorry George; your program has sunk to a new low by having her on.

Dear Mr. Stephanopoulos,
I just finished watching your roundtable segment of today, August 30, 2009. As someone who rarely misses your show, I would like to voice my concern regarding Liz Cheney’s participation in the roundtable discussion.
As I LIBERAL, I appreciate your efforts to ensure views from a broad spectrum of political stances. However I do not know Ms. Cheney to be a journalist, much less one on par with the balance of your guests. Her rude, constant interruptions of the other’s comments were annoying at best. Her presence was more consistent with a cable television talk show than your well-prepared, well-presented Sunday news program.
More importantly, having the daughter of one of the major players in a news story that was being discussed (the CIA interrogations) dismays me. I’m hoping that it was a matter of scheduling Ms. Cheney prior to the breaking news regarding what our government is going to do regarding that issue. Regardless, I would have thought that you would have re-scheduled Ms. Cheney once the story became an issue for today’s program.
Today’s segment will not preclude me from continuing to be a regular view of your program, but I hope that in the future Ms. Cheney’s political ambitions would not be enough to qualify her to be a participant on the roundtable segment of your program.
Thank you for your work, your insight, and your efforts to bring knowledge of our government’s work to all Americans.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Kite

Lynn Cheney should not be part of this discussion panel, as she has a vested interest in the topic of CIA torture. If they dig too deep, her daddy goes to the Hague for war crimes!
Posted by: Lynellen | August 30, 2009, 10:49 am 10:49 am
I used to enjoy the reasoned and informative discussions of the Roundtable. Now that Liz Cheney is a participant, the discussion has become shrill and rude and I couldn’t watch today and turned off the program.
Posted by: Bruce | August 30, 2009, 10:53 am 10:53 am
I AGREE — I didn’t even know WHO that rude woman was, so I checked out the website to find out. I’m so glad the concensus is PLEASE, don’t let her on again. George ususally maintains control during the roundtable — letting each participant have his/her say. Cheney had the controls today, and try as Sam Donaldson did, he was not able to get in a response. Nobody was able to keep her from bullying the conversation. What a shame. I will not watch again if she is on the panel.
Posted by: Sandy | August 30, 2009, 10:59 am 10:59 am
Liz Cheney disrupts the round table conversation by interrupting in a grossly inappropriate manner. Why must we endure listening to her on your show? Her credentials are not worthy of such a platform and she is constantly defending her father’s positions. Why not invite the father rather than the daughter?
Her defense of water boarding and her insistence that the department of justice investigation is unwarranted is all in defense of her father. How about letting this guest go, George? Get a conservative who is a free thinker and not beholden to a father.

I see I am not the only one who was totally annoyed by Liz Cheney’s subjective agenda and methods. I am disappointed when the roundtable is all male, but I would prefer that any time to the disruptive self-serving agenda of Liz Cheney. Daddy’s little girl is a chip off the old block. Haven’t we already heard too much from both of them.
Posted by: Paula | August 30, 2009, 11:09 am 11:09 am
I’ve just watched the August 30 episode, and I’m writing to say that I hope to never see Liz Cheney on there again. What a very rude person. I’m not at all a fan of Sam Donaldson, and often think that he is more enamored with hearing his voice than with participating in an intelligent discussion with informed colleagues, however Liz Cheney made him look like a choir boy! Let me say that I missed any of the tags which would have told me who this woman was, I just came to detest her participation on its lack-of-merit alone. I don’t care for her political position, but I am an adult and I appreciate hearing thoughtful and intelligent positions that don’t agree with mine. I don’t know that she presented much that met those criteria, but still I know I’m not the best judge of positions from the right. But her incredibly rude behavior in trying to talk down and talk over other panelists makes her more suitable for Fox media rather than this show. And her refusal to give up her monologue when George was trying to end the show should ensure that she does not appear again.

What is the point of having Liz Cheney in your round table? Are you trying to promote her & her father recklessness in America’s policies?
Posted by: Homeyra | August 30, 2009, 11:11 am 11:11 am
Liz Cheney was a very, very pleasant surprise to listen to. She was obviously the only one with prepared knowledge of the subject being discussed. In order to dispute her knowledge of the issue, Sam repeatly shouted her down. Not a very classy way to treat a guest. Suggest that each guest get a equal number of minutes to talk and that each mike have a shut off switch

George, I have been a weekly viewer of your show for many years, and have appreciated the balanced right/left positions presented on topics on “The Round Table”. I don’t think I remember a time I watched, when one invitee talked over, borderline shouted down, the other dissenting opinions voiced. Liz Cheney, who clearly is defending the vulnerability of her father from an investigation “going up the food chain” for his responsibility for the “enhanced interrogation techniques” employed during the Bush Administration, was rude and single minded with her well known personal agenda. What she would lend to your group is beyond me. There are plenty of highly qualified conservative alternatives. Mr. Will, whom I deeply respect and disagree with the majority of the time, always provides his well thought out, reasoned point of view, articulated with respect and clear consideration of differing thinking. Even George Will was squirming under the Liz Cheney diatribe. As to Mr. Donaldson, it was a pleasure, and a disappointment at the same time, that he alone picked up the gantlet to address Ms. Cheney’s “talking points” of the extreme right. Her approach was right out of the “Right’s” Town Hall playbook…shout your opponent down so no one can discuss opposing thinking civilly.
Posted by: John | August 30, 2009, 11:15 am 11:15 am
It’s so encouraging to see other viewers voicing objections to Liz Cheney. I watch the roundtable weekly, and I think this particular attempt at balance steps over the line. Question: How might Cheney’s opinions ever be perceived as independent of her father’s?!?
Posted by: K. Leander Williams | August 30, 2009, 11:18 am 11:18 am
I cannot believe that you pay to hear anything that miss Cheney says. She only hears herself and no one else. In the future if she is on your roundtable I will just change channels I would rather watch informercials. I hope that you don’t think this sparks debate because you can’t have a debate with ignorant though well educated people you only get noise.

Ms.Cheney is only focus on protecting her father, not the United States in getting to the truth,if crimes were done. After the weapons of mass destruction was told to American citizens on why we needed to go to war. Please Ms. Cheney, use your fame to fight for something good like passing health care reform with a public plan for all the citizen, education reform and other thing that United States need your support with.

George, while many comments have been directed to Liz Cheney today and I question your choice for her on the roundtable, why on earth have you brought back Sam Donaldson? Today’s roundtable stepped well beyond your normal “profession” discourse of opposing ideas. It was out of control! I think you must have run out of qualified round table participants to bring Sam back. He is obnoxious, combative and should be replaced. I have the remote in hand next time I see him on your panel. You can certainly do a lot better than him!

Lynn Cheney’s has a right to her opinion. What offended me this morning was how she lowered the level of discourse by continuing to “talk over” the other commentators. Please do not turn the best Sunday morning network news show into a rant fest where the most obnoxious speaker gets the most air time. It isn’t just the content of the show that we appreciate, its also the dignity of allowing all opinions to be heard. Lynn Cheney’s performance this morning should reason to never ask her back.

Posted by: Rosie | August 30, 2009, 11:38 am 11:38 am
Liz Cheney is the WRONG person to have in any discussion about health care reform.
She is more concerned with how to demean President Obama than that 47-million Americans have no health insurance. She is more interested in defending her family’s stake in illegal and outrageous decisions regarding the treatment of fellow men, than even a slight of true concern for fellow Americans who face daily life without basic quality (medical and dental care).
I think 9 of 10 Americans would like nothing better than to watch Liz and Mary on a new reality TV show called ‘How much can you take before you break’! … and we the viewing public get to decide that threshold!!
She is a buffoon and it offends me to see ABC place such low-life guttural trash in the same space with those who really care.
Posted by: steve | August 30, 2009, 11:45 am 11:45 am
Boy the Liberals just hate the truth don’t they. Liz wasn’t protecting her father; she never once mentioned a word about her father. In fact she was citing specifics from the previous investigations. She is a true American and concerned about the protection of our citizens. All Obama and his cronies are doing is undermining America. He is playing the “good” guy and lightly opposing what Holder is doing, but in the background I am sure he is cheering him on. Unfortunately we have our first Socialist president. We prosecute the protectors of freedom and let the terrorists go, or pay a country $20M to take them and put them up in a beach house. Not which one is un-American, Liz or Barack? Keep up the fight Liz, we need more true Americans like you to stand up and fight for this country.

It is very disappointing to hear from all corners that the CIA interrogations should be judged in terms of their results. The ends justify the means in other words and with that logic “Hey slavery was wrong but just look at how much cotton was picked”! The terrorists are succeeding because Americans, including the mighty George Will, are scared out of their principles. This morning we learn that the release of the Lockerbie bomber was tied to a British Oil deal. America sets the example – no longer the leader of the free world but the Chief Compromiser.

I am a longtime fan of This Week, but that may change. I enjoy the show because unlike a number of other programs where the people just shout at or over each other, during the round table segment I can hear reasoned and respectful debate of important issues. I am a progressive democrat, but enjoy hearing George Will’s perspective and comments.
This seems to be changing. Not sure if it’s in the pursuit of better ratings or some other reason. Today’s show, with Miss Cheny and Sam Donaldson talking over each other and, especially Miss Cheney, trying to monopolize the conversation, made me want to turn off my TV. Or probably more relevant to you, switch over to Meet the Press which plays during the same time slot in my area. And a couple weeks ago, I was very surprised to see Michelle Malkin on the show. Completely partisan and just the type of person I don’t believe has the credentials to be on This Week. And when Miss Malkin stated something along the lines of “people with extended unemployment benefits just wait until 3 weeks before it runs out before looking for a job” I almost hurled my breakfast. That was a disgusting and ignorant comment.
Please get the show back on track. Or else you will lose me, and I think a lot of viewers who enjoy your program.

Why is Lynne Cheney constantly on – she is only there to defend her fathers legacy…whatever that is. Get rid of her.
Also, George Will’s comment that ‘whether water boarding is immoral surely depends on whether it got us any information’ is stupid. Water boarding’s morality doesn’t depend on its effectiveness – what is this pragmatic morality – is this a new philosophy?
Someone needs to call out George Will on his often ridiculous assertions. No one ever does though..not on your show anyway.
Posted by: kylieharper | August 30, 2009, 12:26 pm 12:26 pm
To the knuckleheads who are defending Liz (not Lynne) Cheney’s “telling the truth to liberals,” I say that here very words implicate her. She referred to previous CIA investigations having been conducted by “career civil servants,” while neglecting to say that they were conducted on the Bush watch when everything was subject to political pressure to get the right message — even those done by “career civil servants.” Furthermore, this came from an Administration that frequently supported the notion that the country didn’t want things done by “government bureaucrats!” Well just what is a “career civil servant” but a “government bureaucrat?”
Liz Cheney is a shill for her chicken-hawk father who doesn’t seem to have the guts to appear on any network but “FixNoise.” Liz, go back wherever your father is hiding out and stop trying to appear respectable when you can never be respectable.

George,
You demonstrated your weakness as a moderator today in a dramatic way: abjectly failing to understand your core audience’s primary motivation to tune in…which is the relaxing absorption of information from knowledgeable, polite and civil guests. Failing to assert yourself and allowing Liz Cheney to rudely dominate, overspeak and ignore the understood rules of civilized discourse gave me real pause as I reevaluated your fitness for this journalistic role. It may simply take someone with more mettle who’s willing to tell a guest he/she is out of line.
Otherwise, George, you’ll lose your core viewers.

No matter how hard Replican’s try or how many times they are allowed by the spineless modern press to lie about factual history without challenge, the official history of the past 12 years will not honor the GOP or the ratings-based press the enabled them. The GOP, their hacks, continue the legacy of favoring religion over the constitution, the rich over the poor and middle class, predujudice and racism over diversity, equality and freedom, ignorance over intellect and science, division over compromise, and big corporate America, their lobbists, their money, over the majority of the America’s hard working, fairminded citizens.
