Liz Cheney and Sam Donaldson Spar on CIA Probe

A very heated debate this morning during the roundtable on AG Holder appointing a prosecutor to investigate CIA interrogation techniques on detainees.

Here’s the exchange between Sam Donaldson and Liz Cheney:

SAM DONALDSON: “As I understand it, the person, called the prosecutor, has been appointed to determine whether, in his option, there is grounds to proceed with prosecution, he will make a recommendations…he’s not prosecuting at the moment.”

GEORGE WILL: “And if he is to recommend yes, who is to say no?”

LIZ CHENEY: “But this investigation has already been done. This was looked for five years by career prosecutors. They decided not to prosecute except in one case where a contractor has been convicted and is in jail. In the other cases Leon Panetta himself has laid out to his employees that they took disciplinary action where they felt it was necessary at the CIA.”

“The other big danger here though is that we have investigated this all before, we are opening now what is clearly a political investigation and a moment when we need the CIA focused on keeping the nation safe. And there’s no question, but when you start talking about investigating and prosecuting… it is simply the case that their attention is not entirely focused on where we need it to be.”

For the full debate, Watch it HERE.

Liz, sorry! Daddy is up to his neck in this and you know it! He violated US law and International law. For once I don’t blame GWB. I can only hope this goes right to the top!

Liz Cheney, a practitioner of the decibel theory of persuasion, does not play well with others.

Please “discontinue” the Liz Cheney appearances! She’s truly overbearing and I will quit watching parts of This Week if I learn she’s on!
She should get her own program!
Thank you!

I usually enjoy the Roundtable due to the civilized and respectful conversation and debate, but Liz Cheney makes it unbearable to listen to. She does not belong on this show and should take a cue from George Will and Gwen Ifill who know how to speak in turn.

I also witnessed the Liz Cheney debacle this morning. What in the world is in the water that the Cheney’s drink that detaches them from reality? They don’t seem to understand they have lost the respect and trust of most Americans. I think it would be a big mistake to have her back on the show again. It sounds like your viewers will turn out if she is.

I think if you go back and review the tape you will find that it was Sam Donaldson that George first had to cut off because he continued to talk while George was trying to make a point. It is obvious you can’t have Sam on without Cokie to keep him under control.

I have been a faithful watcher of your program for some time but I have to say when you have Liz Cheney on I may as well turn off the TV. She is rude and interrupts everyone. She adds nothing to your program on Sunday morning. She is as irritating as her Father, if not worse. If you can’t control her keep her off your news program. Better yet, just keep her off.

LIZ STATES THAT THE CIA AGENTS (LIKE HER FATHER STATED ON ANOTHER PROGRAM) WILL HAVE TO HIRE LAWYERS. FOX NEWS CORRECTED THIS BY ADVISING THAT THE GOV’T WILL PICK UP THE TAB.TOO BAD GEORGE WASN’T AWARE OF THE FACT.

George-Please control your panelists. The Liz Cheney bullying tactics disrupting every other panelist is intolerable and prevents us from hearing other views that hers. Her incessant chatter makes it very unpleasant to watch your programa and if you can’t control your panelists– which I have noticed is escalating on a weekly basis -that I will sadly be leaving you and shifting to “State of the Union” which is on at the same time I used to look so forward to your program on sunday am. I learned so much from it and I will miss you– but I won’t watch panel program where political hacks try to drown out other views but their own. Tyna Mandel

The comments regarding “double jeopardy” are completely off base. Does a police investigation result in double jeopardy? Absolutely not. The only time double jeopardy applies is when some legal issue has been adjudicated. There has been no adjudication in the case of CIA abuses in Iraq/Afghanistan. There is plenty to be concerned about where the Justice Department under the Bush/Cheney Administration was operating in a hugely partisan and political manner.

Posted by: Paul Ourada | August 30, 2009, 1:31 pm 1:31 pm

I agree that Liz Cheney was often talking beyond the sound bites allowed each round table member.
However, she is clearly well informed with the legal issues and the valid reasons for CIA actions.
She tried very hard to communicate strong arguments to Sam D., an incredible buffoon and George Steph., the poor excuse for an “unbiased journalist.”
George Will did not get enough speaking time. But Liz made very important points, even if her insights were emotional.
She needs to be on the program more often so she doesn’t need to try to get everything in during one appearance.

Please stop allowing this woman on the show. She needs to retreat into the cave with her father. Like many conservatives today, she has no regard for the truth.

Unlike some on the panel, Liz Cheney responded with chapter & verse on the points she made. Was this because the rest, absent George & Gwen, had no idea what they were talking about? Liz Cheney is articulate, well informed & makes her opponents look bad. I watch George each week because there are differing opinions & often disagreement which challenges me to seek out, truth v. fiction

George, i switched to your program because of not caring for david gregory.

What a disaster to have Lynn Cheney on the show! I have no problem with conservative commentators — the very reason for political discourse is the reasoned exchange of differing opinions. And it is that very discourse which separates, or is supposed to separate, this show from all of the hysterical talking heads who inhabit, and humiliate, the cause of rational conversation in America. THIS WEEK is designed to be another option, a way for rational minds to discuss ideas. But Lynn Cheney, by selling her point of view with an hysterical stridency that forestalled reasoned debate, was a negative force in the proceedings — sick, demeaning, and terrifying. Further, George S let her get way out of control — and thereby both abdicated his role as moderator, but vitiated the reason for the show in the first place. What a contemptible farce. Never, and I mean never, have that jabbering talking-points nightmare on the show again.

After a bittersweet weekend mourning and honoring Ted Kennedy, I could have done without seeing Liz Cheney on your roundtable.
Why must we be subjected to her biased positions about her disgraceful and criminal father? The majority of Americans believe torture is wrong and that America should adhere to the Geneva Convention’s rule of law. Those who broke the law, like Cheney, should be outed and tried.
Hopefully, the truth will win out. In the meantime, spare us any shameless Cheneys at the roundtable!

Posted by: Gretchen | August 30, 2009, 1:51 pm 1:51 pm

I have always watched This Week because opposing political viewpoints are often expressed calmly and concisely with civility. Today’s display from Liz Cheney was a disturbing departure from civility. If her kind of behavior represents a new norm for the selection of guests on the program then I for one will find myself more inclined toward the CBS and NBC Sunday morning offerings. The descent into shouting matches is not informative or entertaining; it is obnoxious.

Posted by: RemoteInHand | August 30, 2009, 1:51 pm 1:51 pm

This morining I tuned in to “This Week” expecting to hear independent news people, columnists and pundits to be discussing the weeks issues – only to find that a Republican shill for the Bush Administation (Liz Cheney) was posing as an objective comentator on the show. Liz Cheney has no place discussing the CIA Issues or anything to do with her father’s dishonest and blundering administration; she cannot be objective and is of no value to any discussion by thinking people on this issue. First Michelle Malkin and now Liz Cheney!! What is going on at ABC? If I wanted this kind of Right Wing nut talk I would tune in to Fox News. When I turn on a Sunday morning news show, where serious politics are being discussed by the media, I expect independent news people to be analyzing the issues – not a spokesperson for one side or the other! Once again, I turned off “This Week” which I always used to watch I might add, and turned on “Meet the Press”.

Posted by: Kate1149 | August 30, 2009, 1:51 pm 1:51 pm

I want to add my voice to chorus calling for Liz Cheney to be dropped from the roundtable. She is strident, rude, and doctrinaire, and she clearly is pursuing a personal agenda in justifying her father’s actions while in office. She is a detriment to the show, to such an extent that I will quit watching it if she stays on.

Posted by: Ed | August 30, 2009, 1:52 pm 1:52 pm

Liz Cheney is by far THE LEASE QUALIFIED PERSON ever to appear on this show. Why is she on?

Posted by: WLB | August 30, 2009, 1:55 pm 1:55 pm

Never been to the “This Week” website before, but today’s broadcast sent me searching for a place to complain.
How can you possibly have as a panelist a person who has the same last name (Cheney) as one of the leading proponents of a topic being discussed (torture) and bill it as “analysis”? Furthermore, as has been pointed out here numerous times already, a show that devolves into a McLaughlin-type shoutfest makes for an unwatchable program.
As a dedicated viewer of the program since the days of David Brinkley, I found myself today questioning whether I would continue to watch (along with my two school-age children) in the future.
Note to George S.: We want analysis, not panelists who wear their party affiliation on their sleeve. Sure some of the panelists are reliably conservative or liberal, but they support their opinions with facts and aren’t afraid to criticize their side when criticism is called for. Anybody who never veers from the party line, feels their party never makes a mistake, or distorts facts is of no use to me as a viewer.

Posted by: PN in GA | August 30, 2009, 1:58 pm 1:58 pm

Liz Cheney is a detriment to your program because she clearly has a personal conflict in any discussion that connects back to her father. I understand and agree with the need for a panel filled with a variety of political perspectives, but her personal connection detracts from the show’s overall appeal and apparently makes her feel empowered to interrupt other panelists and disregard George S.’s wishes when he’s trying to move forward. Republican panelists – yes. Cheney? No.

Posted by: Angela | August 30, 2009, 2:01 pm 2:01 pm

I was so disappointed this morning all we got to hear with Ms. Cheney speak over everyone. Stop booking this women who is just there to stick up for daddy. They are playing y’all.
Liz Cheney is a piece of work.
I thought Sam Donaldson was on the verge of telling her to shut up at the end.
He looked like he had no respect for her, wondered why she was there and a bit offended that he had to sit across from her while she spewed her lies. He finally named her father out loud as the show ended.
Why is she booked on these shows?
Besides the fact she is not a journalist on a panel of journalists, she also has a HUGE conflict of interest when it comes to defending the filth the Bush/Cheney administration were up too.
She is the worst type of pundit bully.

Go back and look, just watched it! And George, I really thought you had more backbone than that! Why the hell is anyone having that woman “Lynne Cheney” on their programs anyway? Again, the media and DNC are one and the same on almost every issue. No wonder the public’s approval of both continues to plummet. Both pretend to be something other than what they really are and people are beginning to find out more and more.
Why the heck is Mr. Donaldson and the rest of the press consistently acting as spokesmen for left wing causes? Can someone at ABC answer this?

Big mistake to have Liz Cheney on the roundtable, especially weighing in on CIA issues, but really any issue. She advocates her side without contemplating both sides. All others seem to think, and observe. She’s shrill and doesn’t listen. She doesn’t take part in the conversation but overruns it. What a mess, George. Looking at your face I sensed you might do the wise things and keep her away in the future.

I want to add my voice to that fact that Liz Chaney being included in the topic this morning made no sense! There is no way she could possibly be unbiased in her perspective. I don’t like her anyway and don’t think she is qualify to be any kind of “strategist”. I enjoy hearing opposing points of view, but in a balanced and professional manner. Anytime I hear that she in on the show, I will skip it!

Why are people like her given a voice on the mainstream networks. It won’t make the right like you/us any better. And, it makes people like me – a college professor over 60 – want to turn off the TV immediately upon hearing her voice. She is RUDE. NO to her and her father and the horses they rode in on!

I completely agree with the majority stating that Liz Cheney was rude and unbearable. She was constantly interrupting everyone she disagreed with. I listen to “The Roundtable” for an informed and civil discussion. Please do not schedule her again. The same applies to Michelle Malkin and Katrina vanden Heuvel. They both specialize in making outrageous comments.

Posted by: Patrick | August 30, 2009, 3:04 pm 3:04 pm

Liz Cheney is a hog who is there campaigning for her own father. The rude inept venom filled rhetoric coming out of her two bit tongue is sheer desperation to stall any investigation into her fathers unlawful acts in office these last 8 years. Hopefully, the democrats can see thru this political gamesmanship and continue looking into that disaster of an administration.

Posted by: MacMakay | August 30, 2009, 3:09 pm 3:09 pm

Liz Cheney is her fathers daughter, why would we expect her to say something different. Therefore, if she is too close to the issue and cannot make her point intelligently and respectfully she should get her own show to address her one message, one agenda. Enough already, please do not have her on the show again, she is not qualified to have a discussion with the likes of your other guests.

Posted by: EB | August 30, 2009, 3:10 pm 3:10 pm

I’ve always enjoyed the intellectual and informative discussions among the guests on “This Week”. Liz Cheney certainly destroys the balance of that intelligent discussion! Her contempt for the basic principles of our country’s foundation are mere reflections of her father’s! It’s disrespectful of the other distinguished guests to have her sit at the same table. And it’s a terrific way to lose viewers!

I still have it recorded but I will watch when I do my morning exercises so I can get a great workout whiles telling her off at the same time. Please I have much respect for the show and all the views presented to me as a viewer however, please do not bring Michelle Malkin or Ms. Cheney, their Imposing views reach the point of screaming, and incoherence remarks fear mongering with issues. For that I will turn to watch Fox Noise, and I do not watch that channel. Thanks.

Liz Cheney’s only agenda is to justify her father’s conduct while in office. Please stop offering her a platform. Their policies did not make us safer. If they had known what they were doing, we would have never been attacked on 9/11. They dropped the ball and claiming they kept us safe after, does not make up for their lack of competence which led to that terrible day. Too late!

Liz Cheney had one goal this morning — to talk over everyone on the panel to DEFEND HER FATHER on the torture crime issue.
Why in the hell was she on the show this morning? Her strident bad manners and lack of factual information have no place on This Week.

Liz Cheney should not be allowed to pose as any kind of expert. Posted by: MarthaD | August 30, 2009, 3:38 pm 3:38 pm

George,
Dictionary.com defines balance as “a state of equilibrium or equipoise; equal distribution of weight, amount, etc.” Balance can be achieved in many ways. To balance Liz Cheney you would need someone as far to the left as she is to the right, and someone who can shout as loudly as she can. If you are trying to encourage debate that informs your listeners, I’d suggest you achieve balance by having guests who are closer to the center and less inclined to make things up and shout. In other words, your show will be back next week, but I won’t if Ms. Cheney is there.

Posted by: Jim Spencer | August 30, 2009, 3:39 pm 3:39 pm

George,
I have never written before but have always held your show in high regard and rarely missed a segment. You consistently facilitate heated but civilized debates among some of the brightest and best qualified panelists/communicators one could find to represent a range of opinions on important issues. You normally do this will great skill and grace as well as good humor. I also love the “funnies”. However, today was a debacle – and a disappointment on many levels. Although Liz Cheney had been on before, today she stepped way over the line and ran roughshod over the entire Rountable segment. Her rudeness to you and the other panelists was amazing and prevented any intelligent debate. George, you could not even close your segment!!! It was not fun to watch and I learned nothing. Most of your other guests are highly accomplished and willing and able to paticipate in a civilized debate that allows me to learn and grow as a citizen. I tune in weekly to hear not only the black and white of conservative and liberal thought, but also the shades of gray and the reasons behind various positions. Liz’s overall credentials fall far below your usual standards. Just as important, her strident approach got in the way of any thoughtful discussion – and reduced your show to a shouting match. Liz used your show as a platform for a narrow set of ideas. She, not you George, was in charge. You have so many other well-qualified, even brilliant and civilized conservatives to invite to your Roundtable! Please don’t let my favorite show be undermined by someone like this. She can get a partisan show on a partisan channel.
A loyal viewer

I agree that Ms. Cheney’s tactics for debate involve too few fact and too much talking over others. Still, I think the real point is if she is the only person that you can find to support her father’s policies it is time to make that clearer to the viewer. Let’s have a show about ideas and she can go on another show featuring failed leaders children supporting their Dad’s policies. Are Stalin’s, Tito’s, Nixon’s and Carter’s children available.

Earlier this year, Mr. Stephanopoulos, in response to your tweet announcing that Liz Cheney would be a part of the Roundtable (her first appearance I believe), I replied “Which of these Roundtable participants does not belong? Liz Cheney.” As a long-time, loyal viewer of your program and as somebody who very much enjoys an informed exchange of diverse viewpoints from qualified people, I tuned in anyway. I did the same today, even though you had again ‘warned’ me that she would be on the program with the issue of ‘enhanced interrogations’ as a primary topic.
My reaction then was the same as today: Liz Cheney does not belong on your program. I have not had this reaction to ANY of your other Roundtable participants and I have watched your entire program hundreds of times.
Ms. Cheney is not uninformed and not unintelligent. Ms. Cheney is a torture apologist. She is the daughter of a chief architect of the policy of ‘enhance interrogations’. She seems singularly focused on defending the policy and her father’s legacy. She appears to have strong political aspirations of her own. Referring to her a “Republican Strategist” is misleading if not disingenuous.
Liz Cheney monopolizes the dialog on the Roundtable. She jumps in with or without your cue, makes a point AND THEN continues on and on, acting as though any interruption is somehow a violation of her entitlement to continue to speak for the entire segment.
Please, no more invitations to Liz Cheney for the Roundtable. She wrecks the discussion and damages the credibility of the Roundtable.

Frankly, it was ridiculous to have Liz Cheney involved in a discussion which CLEARLY and DIRECTLY involves her own father. While she may have been strident, who can really blame her for not giving an inch? It was a completely poor choice of a guest by the producers of the show.

George S. plz at least attempt to convey some neutrality. Your back was turned to Sam and Gwen as you faced George & Liz most of the time. Are you intimidated by George, or is it that you agree with his conservative views? You defer to him most often. What about your role as moderator? Plz don’t force me to refrain from being a loyal viewer in search of a balanced discussion of issues.

George,
I think it’s fair to say that Liz Cheney has a personal agenda. Let’s stick to general politics from now on. Obama ought to push to end the war in Afghanistan before it’s too late. Bring the troops home! (God bless ‘em.)
By the way, when the timing is right, George, let’s hear something about Ron Paul’s bill to audit the Federal Reserve, HR1207.
It will do “We the People” some real good to get that pseudo-government agency in check before the dollar crashes.
Love, Jake

I should have spoken up the last time Liz Cheney was on the show. I’ve always liked your show because you do not let people talk over one another. But in the two times I’ve seen Liz Cheney on, you have not been able to control her in either instance. I don’t watch Chris Mathews because of people talking over one another. Please do not have Liz Cheney on again. She’s rude and irritating—and the fact that she’s the daughter of one of the most evil people in the country doesn’t help my attitude toward her.

Posted by: Karen | August 30, 2009, 4:42 pm 4:42 pm

Liz Cheney is just DREADFUL. Why do you give her a forum when it’s clear she is setting herself up to run for public office and just wants free advertizing for her repulsive views? You could give thoughtful conservatives time instead of pitbull types like Cheney and Newt. She has no manners and is ill-informed.

I agree with the writer who said…
“…never, have that jabbering talking-points nightmare on the show again.”
I was exhausted just listening to her and highly annoyed at your sheer rudeness.
George: she took over your show !! Please let her go HOME to Fox…quietly !

The roundtable is interesting to watch because the panel members are civil and respectful of each other with the exception of Liz Cheney. She is rude and lacks the civility needed to debate respectfully. She talks over other panelists, talks way, way too long and doesn’t respect anyone else not even yielding to GS.

Posted by: Josena | August 30, 2009, 4:48 pm 4:48 pm

Why do liberals feel the need to trash every female conservative who comes on the scene? Is it because, in light of the way they treated Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin, they’ve lost the “Republicans hate women” argument?
All they have left is the “Republicans are racists” argument, and that is quickly losing its effectiveness.

Posted by: NoBama | August 30, 2009, 4:53 pm 4:53 pm

Though I agree with Sam politically, he sometimes turns the normally civil and thoughtful roundtable toward a cable news yell-fest. This morning’s combination of Sam and Liz Cheney was particularly bad. Please stick with panelists who will add insight from different political viewpoints while maintaining decorum and respect for each other.

Posted by: Charlie M | August 30, 2009, 5:09 pm 5:09 pm

The Round Table discussion is more polite when Ms Cheney does not interrupt and talk over others at the table. She belongs on Fox news if she insists on monopolizing the discussion with her father’s talking points. She failed completely to hear what others were trying to say. No one trusts the opinion of any one in the Bush/Cheney Administration when it comes to assessing the legality of torture or the quality of any information obtained from the victim. It is precisely because all prior investigations found nothing wrong that people who did not participate in the Bush/Cheney Administration need to look at what they did.

Posted by: mpw101 | August 30, 2009, 5:09 pm 5:09 pm

Maybe I am too old to understand what is going on in politics these days but the last few days of civility due to Senator Kennedys death reminded me of days gone by. What I don’t understand is how such obviously unqualified people appear on serious news programs, programs that used to inform the public.
Elizabeth Cheney should have no place on a news panel. She has proven herself to be of the “hate America” crowd who bully and shout and pretend that as long as they just say how bad “the government” is they think no one will notice that they are calling for the downfall of the goverment of the United States of America, that is “the government” they are constantly condeming and in some cases calling for violent action. When did we as Americans start allowing this irrational and dangerous behavior on our publicly owned air waves?

I want to ad my voice of dissapointment to ABC for having Liz Cheney on the round table. As soon as I saw her, I changed the channel, and will continue to do so in the future.

Posted by: David Stanley | August 30, 2009, 5:15 pm 5:15 pm

Leaving aside the merits of Liz Cheney’s points, I was very turned off by the pitch of her voice and terrier-like quality in not letting go, ending up being disrespectful. Thank heavens Sam Donaldson stood toe-to-toe while the others were too polite; otherwise her vehemence may have triumphed.

Posted by: Phyllis Sato | August 30, 2009, 5:32 pm 5:32 pm

I look forward to the show each Sunday morning. I have not really enjoyed George Wills “I am the only person on earth that really understands” personality. But today took the cake–why would you even have Ms. Cheney on this show. It was like accidentally tuning into Fox. Are you forsaking intelligent in favor of sensationalized ratings for crazy people’s entertainment?

Posted by: Cindy Sweatt | August 30, 2009, 5:34 pm 5:34 pm

I think Ms. Cheney’s style is better suited to Fox than a program with a rational and respecful discussion of issues.

Posted by: Barbara | August 30, 2009, 5:39 pm 5:39 pm

I believe the Shaksperian quote fits well in this case “Me thinks the Lady doth protest too much!!” Her father, the famous marksman, has blacked out so much of every report that it is hard to know anything that was said or quoted, but refers to it as if it is all there to be read. The bottom line is that some one defied and trampled the constitution and bill of rights as if they were outdated coupons. There reasons were no different than Batista, Idi Amin, Marcos and many other dictators and claim they were motivated for the good of the country.

i can abide arrogance. i can put up with ignorance. when they are combined in one person i cannot stand to listen to it. lyn cheney is arrogantly ignorant. she is loud, rude, and out of her depth with the normal level of quality on the show.
you can do better.

Posted by: flntny | August 30, 2009, 6:14 pm 6:14 pm

Liz’s shrilling voice drowned out anything Sam Donaldson had to say in retort. Probably what she wanted. She obviously does not know how the round tble works. Each person gets a chance to speak…respectively. I do understand why Stephanopolus puts her on the show as she is qualified in nothing. She is a spokesperson for her Dad and nothing esle. I watch each week but in the future if she is on, I will skip that show. We all know what her comments will be and I realize it is her Dad but we forget….HE BROKE THE LAW. That is the bottom line.

As a liberal, I thoroughly enjoy George Wills. Thoughtful. Unpredictable. Respectful. Liz Chaney was none of the above. Please, never, ever have her on your show again. She was rude, disrespectful and awful.

Our prohibition of torture is not simply a lofty feel good ideal. It is critical to the perpetuation of the principles of liberty in our country. We either abide by the Bill of Rights or we do not.

Posted by: John | August 30, 2009, 6:48 pm 6:48 pm

You do a disservice to your audience, and to any standing you may have as an unbiased, credible news source, when you present Ms. Cheney as an objective participant in a discussion about anything concerning her father. Clearly, she is not, and clearly, she will use any platform she is given to pitch her father’s rhetoric as fact, whether it is or not. This can be, to say the least, misleading to your audience. But then, I’m fairly certain that’s the whole point of being there, for her.
My initial inclination was to agree with many here, and request that you ask her to seek her air-time on FOX. But then, I thought about it and realized that the more she and her father speak, the more likely they are to accidentally trip over the truth. Mr. S., if you promise to try harder to get a word in edgewise and actually pin her down on some of the more blatant stuff, I say, keep her coming!

Posted by: Marcia Ferguson | August 30, 2009, 6:48 pm 6:48 pm

I agree. Why is Liz Cheney on this show? This is a conflict of interest.

Posted by: Bob | August 30, 2009, 7:03 pm 7:03 pm

Liz Cheney is prostuting herself as a propagandist in an attempt to save her daddy from the hangman’s noose. It is a disgrace that any media outlet would have a criminal’s child flaunting her bias in this way.

Posted by: Levi the Oracle | August 30, 2009, 7:05 pm 7:05 pm

Yes, the exchange between Donaldson and Cheney did become an annoying distraction, but let’s not throw people off the show for that. George has to take control of his show and then have a little chat back stage with both of them. So many who commented here want to throw Liz Cheney off the show and threaten to stop watching. If you truly want civil diaglogue, you have to be prepared to shut down any attempt to turn it into a shouting match. I found it just as frustrating when EJ Dionne began one of his comments with a dig about Republican hypocrisy on the Medicare. It is as if he wants to take advantage of an opportunity to throw in a little zinger because he knows George Will is not going to jump in and respond. What is the point of that kind of remark?

Posted by: Roger H. | August 30, 2009, 7:30 pm 7:30 pm

I value this show because it is an interesting discussion, not a shouting match. Will, Dionne, and Ifil met the show’s standards today. The other two panelists did not. And it’s not the first irrational performance by either one.
My guess is that Cheney is not ready for prime time. Perhaps Donaldson is a little too far past prime time.
I won’t be watching when they’re on in the future.

Posted by: Beverly | August 30, 2009, 7:44 pm 7:44 pm

I watch your show every Sunday but pulease–do not include on your show panelists who speak over other people and who think that expressing a point of view over and over in a very loud voice somehow adds credibility to the original statement. Liz Cheney just isn’t up to the quality of your show and your usual fine array of stimulating guests. She is merely a rude child.

Posted by: Pleats | August 30, 2009, 7:47 pm 7:47 pm

Get a grip, ABC news! You consult Liz Cheney as a Republican strategist when she is talking about her own father?

Posted by: Ellen | August 30, 2009, 7:59 pm 7:59 pm

I think it is galling that the daughter of the man who is at the heart of this crime scene is repeatedly invited to comment on it as though she is an objective analyst.

Posted by: John | August 30, 2009, 7:59 pm 7:59 pm

Why would we NOT expect Liz Cheney to defend her father. Why should we have to listen to when she has no respect for the other panelist? I almost didn’t watch this morning when I heard she would be on. Come on George! Liz is so bias we probably could have all determined her exact words. Don’t you have anyone else you can invite? Rachael Maddow was great. As a matter of fact, she would be a great regular.

Enough people are asking why Liz Cheney continues to appear on your show. Could you please offer up a reason? There have to be other, more qualified, conservatives you could have on. Please, do your viewers a favor and leave rude blustering people like Cheney to spew their bile somewhere else.

Posted by: Todd Brei | August 30, 2009, 8:20 pm 8:20 pm

Both commentators, Liz Cheney and Sam Donaldson should *NOT* be invited back.
Both of them were trying to out-shout each other. And it’s just ridiculous.
I’m also disappointed at the host. He
was completely incapable of moderating. Whether the commentators are capable or not, everybody should abide by one simple rule of taking their turn as well as stay within a time limit. It’s just annoying to see two kids bickering by out-shouting each other!!! I can just listen to my own kids for that kind of entertainment!!

LIZ CHENEY’S ONLY QUALIFICATION IS THAT SHE IS WILLING TO REPEAT HER FATHER’S PATHOLOGICAL LIES TO COVER UP FOR HIS CRIMINAL, INCOMPETENT ABUSE OF POWER. THE FBI, MILITARY, AND CIA INTERROGATORES HAVE ALL SAID THAT TORTURE DOESN’T WORK; IT RESULTS IN THE TARGETING OF OUR TROOPS WHO ARE BEING KILLED AS A RESULT; IT UNITES OUR ENEMIES AGAINST US, AND IT CRIPPLES OUR ABILITY TO WIN HEARTS AND MINDS–THE ONLY WAY, ACCORDING TO THE PENTAGON, THAT WE WILL EVER WIN THE WAR ON TERROR. I CAN’T BE AN ACCOMPLICE, BY WATCHING THIS WEEK, TO YOUR PROMOTION OF THE CHENEYS’ LIES AND YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO THE DESTRUCTION OF JOURNALISM.

Posted by: Greg | August 30, 2009, 8:35 pm 8:35 pm

This was not a civil discussion. I watch This Week to hear reasonable people speak reasonably on different sides of the topic, not to hear them talk over one another. Or accuse the others of being uninformed. Liz
Cheney was unbearable to watch and listen to. I do not object to hearing different opinions. I do object to hearing one person drown out anyone who doesn’t agree with her. Or hold
forth without letting anyone else respond. Rein her in or invite a spokesperson who knows how to
behave. We saw enough of this at
the recent “town meetings”. It does not qualify as discussion, much less reasonable discussion.

Liz Cheney is rude, overbearing and just like her father – running full tilt in the wrong direction. I usually enjoy the roundtable, but with her on, it is impossible to watch as she interrupts, yells and acts like a shrew. Get Cokie back. Today she said waterboarding was not torture – what glass is she drinking from?

I have been a long time fan of This Week, but will not continue watching if Liz Cheney is invited back. The ability to engage in civil discourse seems to have disappeared with both Liz Cheney and Sam Donaldson. Hearing independent analysis from competent news people seems to be a thing of the past.

Posted by: Karen | August 30, 2009, 9:27 pm 9:27 pm

I fully agree that Liz Cheney should not be on the Roundtable. She does not know how to behave and gives all Republicans a bad image with her obnoxious behavior. She is what the Republicans do not need. She and dad should ride off to Utah and stay there, or if they wish to stay in the public light we can look more closely at what Dad did while in office.

Been watching ‘This Week’ since David Brinkley and have liked it. However, George is not able to control his guests and Ms. Cheney is not the type of guest that we are used to seeing. It seems Sam Donaldson interrupted Liz Cheney from completing her thought. Sam was by far the least polite. The Liberals seem to say they like there Republicans submissive like George Will. The Liberals aways filibuster and poor George Will gets to a minute to pronounce words only one percent of the population uses to talk to their fellow elite snobs. I hear Liberals say shut up Republicans. Why should anyone trust a Liberal that is unwilling to allow free speech. Liberals will then practice demonizing and disqualifying anyone but a Liberal community organizer of Chicago machine politics that pays off Liberal cronies.

I agree, Liz Cheney has no credentials and no reason to be on the program except as an apologist for her father.
And if he has given her information on the approval and administration of torture during his administration, then he has revealed confidential government information to his daughter. Isn’t that illegal?

George, I truly enjoy your program every Sunday. Liz Chaney has no business on your weekly program, she belongs on Fox only. Its always a disapointment when the round table arrives and shes sitting along with the others. She is a carbon copy of her father, and the last eight years were certainly enought. Thanks

Posted by: Mike Giuseffi | August 31, 2009, 1:06 am 1:06 am

Liz Cheney has no place on this show. She is just defending her father and has no idea how to conduct a civil discussion. Your show — without her — is the best Sunday morning, but with her on the roundtable you can not compete.

Posted by: Jim | August 31, 2009, 1:20 am 1:20 am

Liz Chaney,
Assessment: Rude, Disrespectful, Discourteous, Behavior obnoxious
George Stephanopoulos Show on August 30, 2009
At the beginning of the show on August 30, it seems that the producer for the George Stephanopoulos Show had had discussion with her regarding the expectation for the show as it relates to appropriate behavior. However, into the show, she began to interrupt, disregard the other panelist, and exhibited behavior that was just down-right disgusting. Not only did she not respect the other panelist, she did not respect George.
When a person lacks control to the extent that she does, it speaks to her as a person and her reasoning capacity, which are obviously lacking.
PLEASE, KEEP HER OFF THE SHOW. If she appears again, I will

Posted by: Francy Wilkerson | August 31, 2009, 2:36 am 2:36 am

I can’t help but wonder how the discourse on an issue as important as torture and the prosecution of war crimes is elevated by the contributions of a member of the administration under scrutiny on a panel of journalists. Most viewers are certainly aware of, or may easily assertain, the political leanings of the editorialists and commentators regularly presented, but the inclusion of an individual so personally involved is intelectually irresponsible. I tune in to listen to viewpoints the move beyond mindless talking points, and a general disappointment with David Gregory’s show. This, though, was just saddening. And double jeopardy protection does not extend to mere investigations.

Posted by: ljr | August 31, 2009, 3:32 am 3:32 am

The argument Ms Cheney was trying to make is:
1) “the ends justify the means”
2) “it is double jepardy because it was already investigated”
3) “there was no crime because they were successful & the President authorized it”
IMHO – The only successful argument is “the President authorized it” and Congress did not impeach him for it. All of her other arguments were used by the loosing side after WWII unsuccessfully – orders, not torture, saved lives, and so on. I am not comparing the previous administration to anyone, other than to say the world established after WWII what is allowed in war and what is torture and war crimes, many being convicted for the same acts Ms Cheney now defends. Being on the winning side does not alter history now matter how boldly you proclaim “established facts” for such behaivor.

Liz Cheney is just another conversation monopolizing interrupting loud typical blond republican propagandists of the ilk seen all over the talk show networks. She has memorized her points and drops them in ad nauseum. what she says is quite often not borne out by the facts, but merely part of the reports she bases them on. Her practice is similar to that typical on FOX and for the klife of me, I cannot figure out how ABC stopped so low as to inflict her weekly upon the public. She is the Monica Crowley of This Week.

Typical libs – Behold the left’s idea of a “discussion” A Democrat acting as a “journalist” interviews a Democrat in piece which is written by a former Clinton administration official.
Everyone agrees with the DNC party line.
If a “news” organization has the temerity to put anyone on the show who disagrees with the party line – SHUT THEM UP. GET RID OF THEM!
You folks sound like our president on healthcare “reform” – Shut up!! Shut up!! Shut up!! Hurry up! Pass the bill, incomplete and unread.
BTW, show trials are a time-honored method of changing the subject when things aren’t going well for you politically.
Things aren’t going well for the messiah right now, are they?
So – let’s have show trials! It will keep his idiot anti-American base happy, and who gives a cr*p about national security anyway?
BTW, CIA spent a lot of time undermining the Bush Administration, so guys: what goes around, comes around. And remember CIA folks: All promises by Barack Obama come with an expiration date – ALL OF THEM. LOL!!
Remember also – Democrats play war with politics and play politics with war. They’ll spend more time, and effort on domestic “enemies” than those abroad, especially those from dictatorships which are hostile to democracy.
Dear Leader feels much more comfortable with the Hugo Chavez’s of the world than with having to deal with American democracy.
Horrible democracy allows people to criticize Dear Leader. And even though he can count on his friends in the media to cover for him, there’s this thing called the internet which is kind of out of control right now. Which brings us back to getting rid of dissent (Liz Cheney). Such a bully. Dems can’t take it.

Praise for Donaldson for asking the followup questions and at least trying to get a word in edgewise and correct her lies while the rudest person on television kept interrupting and out-shouting people and changing the subject to whatever she wanted it to be.
She always behaves this way: rude, interrupting, changing the subject. She is a terrible guest.
Why is she on television? What does she contribute? What are her qualification?
It is shameful that networks let a guest behave so rudely that an enlightening discussion cannot be conducted and nobody else gets to speak.
I won’t watch any interviews where L.Cheney is a participant.

I wonder why you bother with Liz Cheney at a roundtable discussion. She seems incapable of discussion and of debate. She is incredibly rude and bullying. She is not up to your standards nor up to to the standards and knowledge of the Roundtable. Again, why bother?

Posted by: abe | August 31, 2009, 9:11 am 9:11 am

You people are so out of touch with reality in your utopian, kumbayah world. Most Americans do not believe either US law or international law was violated in these interrogations. Most Americans are greatful the work was done and feel the country may well have been saved from subsequent attacks. And most Americans think terrorists should be dealt with as harshly as necessary, not treated like car thieves.

Posted by: James | August 31, 2009, 9:11 am 9:11 am

WLB is correct…. except for the typo…. what qualifications, exactly, does Liz Cheney bring to the roundtable, besides defending her father’s criminal existence? None.

Posted by: Susan J. | August 31, 2009, 9:21 am 9:21 am

What are her qualifications to be interviewed on this subject?
Why is she allowed to interrupt and out-shout others and change the subject at will and otherwise dominate the discussion?
I won’t watch discussions on television where all the participants to not speak. This was a Cheney family infomercial – nothing more. Disgusting.

Posted by: Katie | August 31, 2009, 9:30 am 9:30 am

I agree with many of the others who made the point that Liz Cheney is obnoxious because she doesn’t take her turn and won’t shut up. I was appalled at what I saw yesterday morning. If she continues to appear on “This Week,” I will not watch it anymore.

Posted by: Lisica | August 31, 2009, 9:33 am 9:33 am

Thanks for showing the tape of good old Liz doing her usual thing. I normally am a faithful viewer to the Sunday program but when I learned that Liz Cheney would be part of the roundtable I just knew I could not watch….too bad for me, I would have been cheering Donaldson on. He is one of the first people that has had the guts (and brains) to try to talk over “daddy’s puppet”. Seems that George S. is like all the others – just letting the “Cheney puppet” spout the family lies.

Posted by: Mary | August 31, 2009, 9:39 am 9:39 am

Why is everyone afraid of these bullies? Bring in Barney Frank to shut these people up. He’s the only Democrat I’ve seen lately who treats these people with the disrespect they deserve.

Posted by: Lesley Palmer | August 31, 2009, 9:42 am 9:42 am

Why does ABC give a person like Liz Cheyney any airtime at all? She has no credentials, no credibility and is extremely divisive. I want to hear real debate. If George S. can’t control his panel, there are many other qualified people who can.

Posted by: Phyllis Cari | August 31, 2009, 9:43 am 9:43 am

Where does Liz Cheney get any legitimacy at all. My Dad was a school administrator for years (and never shot anyone in the face) so when will you have me on to discuss education issues?

Posted by: Kevin | August 31, 2009, 10:15 am 10:15 am

I watch Fox News just so I can know what lies they are telling. Then I watch your show for the truth to be discussed in a calm and professional manner. If Liz is to be invited back, please instruct her to not HOG the show. Sam would not have had to interupt her if she’d made her point quickly and let others speak to the point too.

Posted by: Cindy | August 31, 2009, 10:45 am 10:45 am

I agree with the others who say that they will not tune in if she is on again. She spouts her lies over others and is not qualified to be on a show of this caliber. Unacceptble ABC.

Posted by: Chris | August 31, 2009, 11:15 am 11:15 am

This is disgusting.

Posted by: Renita | August 31, 2009, 12:15 pm 12:15 pm

I was sitting there watching the show and could not understand anything that was said when she would get involved in the conservation…..Please do not have her on agian. I am tired of listening to here and her Father……

Posted by: Jim Heathington | August 31, 2009, 12:17 pm 12:17 pm

Another vote for keeping the panel civil and keeping Liz Cheney off the program. I too will skip This Week next time she’s on.

Posted by: LSA | August 31, 2009, 12:20 pm 12:20 pm

I was listening to a debate for public office that Ted Kennedy had when he first ran for congress. His challenger said “if your name were not Kennedy you would not even be considered for this office”……The same can be said for Liz Chaney.Under another name she would not have been invited to the show…….

Posted by: rotanjim | August 31, 2009, 12:25 pm 12:25 pm

Did Liz Cheney have access to documents she was not cleared to see? Why is Leon Panetta seeming to cover up CIA illegal actions? Why did Eric Holder decide to have such a limited inquiry into torture techniques? Why isn’t Obama being more of a leader and putting more transparency on the past and present so we can move forward better informed and educated to prevent another eight year Cheney/Bush disaster?

Posted by: lz | August 31, 2009, 12:27 pm 12:27 pm

ABC = The Obama Channel

Posted by: wendys mom | August 31, 2009, 12:46 pm 12:46 pm

It was difficult to understand the various round table comments with such talking over one another. I thought Sam D. was the worst offender.
George, take charge!

Posted by: R Jackson | August 31, 2009, 1:14 pm 1:14 pm

Not only a mistake to have Liz Cheney on. George, as moderator you should be making them take turns/ allowing the bully to bully, talk over people and inhibit real discussion should be embarrassing to you. Your show was once the show to watch. Sad.

Posted by: Laura | August 31, 2009, 1:35 pm 1:35 pm

Wow. I have just lost all respect for Sam Donaldson, all of it.
He is nothing other than a hack on a witch hunt. I have more respect for dog crap than I do Donaldson.
His partisan views on torture to healthcare, he is nothing than a cheerleading hack for liberals. He is entitled to his opinion, but don’t sell it as unbiased.
If anything, it was Ms. Cheney that thumped Mr. Donaldson. Damn hard too. She exposed him as someone who doesn’t have all the facts, yet has his mind closed and ready to sentence the last administration to death over it. He is truely a pathetic excuse for anything to do with news.

Posted by: Dave | August 31, 2009, 1:41 pm 1:41 pm

Not to beat a dead horse, but the minute I saw that Liz Cheney was going to be on this week, I turned the channel, just as I had done earlier when her father, which is THE ONLY reason she is invited to speak on any TV show, was scheduled to appear on FOX News Sunday. ENOUGH already. Why not just invite someone you meet on the street to be a guest, maybe someone with some REAL WORLD experience would be on instead of Liz Cheney, the Paris Hilton of politics.

Posted by: Shirley | August 31, 2009, 1:47 pm 1:47 pm

Isnt’ it funny how liberals talk a tough game about their news being balanced too.
Yet, when there is actual balance (Liz Cheney in this case) they claim they will nolonger watch future shows.
I see. Liberals are fine with the “balance” being everyone has to toe their party agenda and opinions.
Liz Cheney really showed Sam Donaldson as the partisan hack he really is. He didn’t read the whole report, just the parts he liked. He is pathetic. Liberals are pathetic too that voice their disapproval of having a different opinion on the show.
ABC, ignore those hacks that will boycott your show over Ms. Cheney. They are the problem with America today. They have no respect for anyone with a different opinion and wish for them to be silenced.

Posted by: Dave | August 31, 2009, 1:52 pm 1:52 pm

I agree with all the above who found Liz Cheney unqualified for the program. If you have her on again, I will watch something else.

Posted by: jstuart | August 31, 2009, 1:59 pm 1:59 pm

It’s tough for the other indoctinated side when their tactics are used by the other side.

Posted by: Bob P | August 31, 2009, 2:07 pm 2:07 pm

I can’t stand Liz Cheney and I will not watch if she is ever on again. She interrupted several of the panelists and recited canned positions. What credentials does the loud mouthed, misinformed woman have? Oh yah, Daddy got her a job at the Pentagon. Please if we are going to talk about the CIA let’s get someone who knows what they are talking about instead someone who obviously has an axe to grind. She kept repeating the same thing; that they had already investigated. Who investigated? Oh yah, the previous Republican adminsitration. There was a Geneva Convention for a reason – why does the Bush Administration’s mistreatment of prisoners supercede any other nation that claims to be defending the security of their nation? It doesn’t and only serves to diminish the US in the eyes of the rest of the world.

Posted by: Laura | August 31, 2009, 2:25 pm 2:25 pm

Wow… not what I want to watch at that time in the morning.
There is a show for people who simply like to shout down other guests and their host… it’s called the McLaughlin Group.
George, please don’t invite that pompous, over-bearing loudmouth (I’m talking about Ms Cheney) back to your show.
George Will could hardly get a word in. And Gwen… OMG… Gwen looked completely stunned by Ms Cheney’s tactics to control the conversation. Completely overbearing.

Posted by: Bruce Henry | August 31, 2009, 2:37 pm 2:37 pm

I was very upset with the appearance of Liz Cheney. Apparently her idea of persuasion is to see who can yell the loudest. I am delighted to see how many other listeners felt the same way. Saying that “the issue was decided by experienced” personnel over and over was pathetic. There are many times when mistakes are made and then experienced people make corrections. She should not be on the program. She really contributes very little.

Posted by: Jane | August 31, 2009, 3:10 pm 3:10 pm

Please no more Liz Cheney. She is very rude and talks over everyone. Roundtable is supposed to be an intelligent, civilized discussion – not domination and disregard for others and their opinions. Totally inappropriate to have her on, she spoils the whole thing. Would love to hear what George Will thinks of her crazy manner.

Posted by: Kadi | August 31, 2009, 3:14 pm 3:14 pm

What is Liz Cheney doing on television? Seriously, other than her clear devotion to her father, what else has she done that qualifies her to be talking about torture? Moreover, think of the thousands of CIA agents, national security specialists, foreign policy advisors, and, generally, qualified personnel who could speak on your program. Why would you ever give Liz Cheney a spot?

Posted by: teo | August 31, 2009, 3:38 pm 3:38 pm

Liz Cheney is as sick as her parents! At least Sam Donaldson “tried” to get a word in. L. Cheney has mastered the -don’t take a breath and keeping talking over people- until there is a commercial break. Why do “real” news shows have her on? She belongs ONLY on
FOX cable with all of the other severely right wing wackos. Keep her off!
Thank you.

Posted by: Ana Rasmussen | August 31, 2009, 3:53 pm 3:53 pm

Why is Liz Cheney given any credibility? Just because her father was VP does NOT make her an expert on anything. I realize she had some midlevel govt position, courtesy of Daddy’s last name, but I do not see any other ‘deputy assistant secretaries’ given this kind of platform to speak.
I guarantee that anytime I see her on the screen, I will change the channel.

Posted by: SJV | August 31, 2009, 3:57 pm 3:57 pm

This is the second time I’ve see Liz Cheney on your program. Next time she’s on there I turn you off. She’s rude and arrogant – much like her father – go figure. If I wanted to hear people talking over eachother I’d watch Fox News. The roundtable discussion was pretty much worthless.

Posted by: c2 | August 31, 2009, 4:04 pm 4:04 pm

Oh come on people! Sam Donaldson was just as out of line as Liz Cheney was. A majority here just didn’t like what Liz had to ssy. Is getting rid of people we don’t agree with how we deal with things today?. In that case please do not have Katrina vanden Heuvel or Arianna Huffington on your show anymore. Send them over to MSNBC.

Posted by: pontiacman | August 31, 2009, 4:31 pm 4:31 pm

I cannot believe you put Liz Cheney on
this show. I will STOP watching if she is on again! She is obnoxious, rude, and
gives typical Republican comments-a
true viper just like daddy; she has no
business being on this show-get her OFF!

Posted by: Areste Koutsouris | August 31, 2009, 4:44 pm 4:44 pm

By the tone of the lefty outrage, sounds like Liz got under your skin! It must be painful to have your world view contradicted by a bright, articulate, conservative voice. Close your eyes, stick your fingers in your ears, and start babbling, and maybe the sound of conservatives defending themselves against your slander will just go away.

Posted by: CMS | August 31, 2009, 5:23 pm 5:23 pm

What in the world is Liz Cheney doing on This Week. She is not a journalist, but a right-wing nut case defending her daddy. What is This Week trying to say when they have three creditable journalist on the panel….. and Liz Cheney who is anything but creditable. I no longer watch This Week. There are other quality Sunday news programs on the other networks one can watch.

Posted by: Rob | August 31, 2009, 5:24 pm 5:24 pm

I also want to know why Liz Cheney is appearing on the news shows! She is NOT qualified; we have enough of Cheney’s to last us a life time. I am tired of her idiotic comments … she is not relevant and should be dropped from roundtable and all other news venues.

Posted by: Farzana | August 31, 2009, 6:06 pm 6:06 pm

why does “the press” still fear Cheney
to the point of having his daughter on
every talk show available to plead his
case-this is certainly not journalism
and she is no pundit-simply a defender and spokesperson for her father’s regime
of torture and politization of the justice department-George and ABC
should be embarrassed to have caved in
to the Cheney intimidation-why does
this man stil have such power over the
media-what are you guys afraid of?

Posted by: Nancy M Smith | August 31, 2009, 6:34 pm 6:34 pm

Comment to CMS, then why don’t you tell all of us “lefties” exactly what her qualifications are to appear on a serious national network news program to discuss either Senator Kennedy’s 47 years in the Senate or her fathers illegal actions. Everyone else on that panel has years of political or national media experience.

Posted by: kathiwwjd | August 31, 2009, 6:36 pm 6:36 pm

Drives me crazy that the debate is over whether or not torture works, as if “working” makes it legal, valid and moral.
Rule of Law means WE ARE NOT ABOVE THE LAW. Nazis and despots justify their actions. Why don’t the Cheneys get this simple premise?
So, Liz, if shooting the terrorist in the knee works, is it justified? How about shooting his wife in the knee? How about his child? Are you the one to decide where it stops?

Posted by: DDB | August 31, 2009, 6:48 pm 6:48 pm

Unfortunately Donaldson tried the Obama version of derision. It didn’t work. She was spot on.

Posted by: LJ | August 31, 2009, 6:59 pm 6:59 pm

Iagree with one of the above, there are more objective people to debate this issue. You can’t blame Liz Cheney for her WELL informed opinion of the issue as I would imagine she has access to info that is not available to the public.
But inthe end her Dad’s regime is what it is, and no matter how much she says and tries to convince herself, it is still just the corrupt regime that it was.

Posted by: aw | August 31, 2009, 7:15 pm 7:15 pm

Liz Cheney? Really? Was Carrot Top busy? Frankly, he would be more credible. Please, no more air time to this “daddy defender”, this regular Fox Fool. I turned off the show for the first time in your history. George, you let her run all over you and your guests. The educated, American public does not want to hear her mouth again.

Posted by: Jenny Cocanougher | August 31, 2009, 8:28 pm 8:28 pm

AS Barney Frank, said addressing a woman of the Liz Cheney persuasion (and I paraphrase)”talking with you is like debating a dining room table”.
Liz Cheney you are thick.

Posted by: Diane Olson | August 31, 2009, 10:19 pm 10:19 pm

Oh my! The value of your program is the diverse perspectives your guests bring to the round table — leaving your viewers to decide where they stand now that they are better informed.
What ever happened to the concept of “disagree with out being disagreeable?” Perhaps Liz should think about Jerry Springer as a more appropriate platform for her style of communication. It seems the conservatives get more and more nasty as time goes by.
I didn’t envy your job last week George! I don’t see how you could have controlled her. Take her off your guest list — please. She won’t help your ratings! A loyal fan….

Posted by: Kay Kupka | August 31, 2009, 10:33 pm 10:33 pm

Will the hate mongering about the Cheneys ever end, I looked at this video again and I didn’t see anyone on the show any better then Mrs Cheney. If all you guys are looking for is yes men and that gwen woman then yes remove Liz, besides I haven’t found a Democrate that wanted to hear fact yet. If they can’t hate Bush\Cheney then what is there to live for?

Posted by: sonshineman | September 1, 2009, 12:46 am 12:46 am

I am glad to see that all the comments posted here are anti Cheney. This tells me that the show and it’s viewers are one sided, unfair and seriously not balanced. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK OF REVEALING WHY FOX IS WINNING IN EVERY TIME SLOT.

Posted by: sonshineman | September 1, 2009, 12:56 am 12:56 am

With Liz Cheney and Sam Donaldson on this week, I thought I was tuned into McLaughlin’s weekly melee … I hope she was a one timer. I wish Sam Donaldson would retire, period. This Week comes the closest to Agronski…please keep the civil and intelligent tone.

Please replace Liz Cheney with someone who actually uses facts. Just saying something over and over does not make it true.

Posted by: Len | September 1, 2009, 2:29 pm 2:29 pm

George,
I’ve been thinking – if you absolutely MUST have Liz Cheney on again then you owe it to your audience to have someone like Glenn Greenwald on also to counter the lies and distortions promulgated by Ms. Cheney.
Though I respect Mr. Dionne and Ms. Ifill, it was apparent that they had no inclination, desire or opportunity to put Ms. Cheney in her place.
Somehow I think Mr. Greenwald would be far more effective with the necessary scorn, outrage and pertinent facts and figures at his fingertips to render Ms. Cheney apoplectic.

Posted by: mike giuseffi | September 1, 2009, 2:45 pm 2:45 pm

My God! Will someone please tell Liz that her beloved Daddy is no hero, and actually is a war criminal. I endured these lies for 8 years, why must I endure the dying dogma of a failed Presidency. I love This Week, but will not watch it the next time that mouthpiece for her father is on. This is not bring your Daughter to work day.

Posted by: dale curry | September 1, 2009, 3:40 pm 3:40 pm

I enjoy the show but will have to give it up if it follows the Chris Matthews style of constant interruption and “overtalking” as demonstated by Liz Cheney. I like to be able to disagree with George Will (obviously I’m a liberal) but still admire his style and the fact that he can express his opinions without denigrating those who disagree. A talent not shared by the former Vice (that’s the word) President’s daughter.

Posted by: Barbara | September 1, 2009, 5:16 pm 5:16 pm

I tune into your show because of the usually respectful and well reasoned debate from highly regarded opposing viewpoints (especially loved the Frum, Will, Krugman, Reisch roundtable). However, having Liz Cheney on the show was a huge disaster in that she was not reasoned or respectful. I understand that Sam D can be incorrigible but Liz Cheney really had no place on a show talking about Bush administration torture policies (yes Liz, waterboarding is torture so can we please get past that) that her father was an integral part of. Bad mistake by the producers. I can watch Fox News any day of the week.

Posted by: Rick | September 1, 2009, 6:08 pm 6:08 pm

I value the differing opinions usually expressed at round-tables. I can wade through the hyperbole and determine for myself who has the most credibility. I will not watch this program if control is lost and multiple people speak (or screech) at the same time.
Liz Cheney’s tactics are the same as most republican pundits; loudly and rudely obfuscate facts in a relentless and futile (in the long run) effort to revise history in order to win over center thinking and independent people.
The investigations into the CIA probably will lead to further investigations into acts of the prior adminstration, including the former Vice-President. They know this and are trying to stamp out this flame before it becomes a raging inferno and consumes those who made the policies and gave the orders (even if they just looked the other way).
Muzzle or better yet don’t invite back Liz Cheney or you lose this viewer.

Posted by: Tony - Charleston, SC | September 2, 2009, 2:00 pm 2:00 pm

After Michelle Malkin and Liz Cheney, who should we expect to see next? Glen Beck? Sean Hannity? Is this the demographic This Week’s producers are after? What a shame. To think this is the same show David Brinkley hosted. ABC News should be ashamed of itself.
