Obama Offers ‘Hope’ in a County Nearing 17 Percent Unemployment

ABC News’ Rachel Martin reports: President Obama tied his destiny to that of Elkhart county, Indiana, an area that’s been devastated by the recession and the related decline of the manufacturing and automobile industries.

The cover of the Elkhart Truth, the local newspaper, brandished the following headline today: “The fortunes of a community, a president, entwined.”

In one year, the President noted, the Elkhart area suffered a 10 point increase in unemployment. It’s now hovering around 17 percent. In an interview with NBC’s Chuck Todd immediately after the event, Obama said he thought the characterization made by the paper was accurate. “If I’m successful at the end of four years, I will be able to look back and say Elkhart has not just come back from the brink but is actually poised to moved forward into the 21st century.”

Obama delivered his remarks at an RV facility in Wakarusa, IN in Elkhart County. He announced $2.4 billion dollars in grants for the development and production of the “new generation of batteries” and electric vehicles. The state of Indiana will be the second biggest recipient of the grant money. He said that Navistar, the company that owns the Monaco RV facility, will receive a $39 million grant to build “400 advanced battery electric trucks with a range of 100 miles.” The announcement was met with loud applause.

“See, I don’t want to just reduce our dependence on foreign oil and then end up being dependent on their foreign innovations,” the president said.

“I don’t want to have to import a hybrid car. I want to be able to build a hybrid car here. I don’t want to have to import a hybrid truck, I want to build a hybrid truck here. I don’t want to have to import a windmill from someplace else, I want to build a windmill right here in Indiana.”

The president went on to give, in essence, a pep talk about how the economic Recovery Act is making an impact. And he launched into a campaign-style speech about his administration’s top priorities. Besides energy independence and job creation, he talked about health care:

“I promise you, we will pass reform by the end of this year, because the American people need it. The American people need some relief.”

And about those who he says are obstructing health care reform, “There are those who want to seek political advantage. They want to oppose these efforts. Some of them caused the problems that we’ve got now in the first place, and then suddenly they’re blaming other folks for it.”

The president also spoke about education reform.

“In the next decade, by 2020, America will once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world. We used to be number one. We will be number one again when it comes to college graduates.”

And he retraced familiar territory with talk of hope.

“The truth is, it can be easy to lose hope, especially when you see a lot of folks out there who failed to meet their responsibilities, from Wall Street to Washington,” he said.

“We’ve got to set our sights higher, not lower. We’ve got to imagine a future in which new American cars are powered by new American innovation, a future in which cities that led the global economy before are leading it again, a brighter future for Elkhart, a brighter future for Indiana and for the United States of America.”

Obama is proving to be far worse than Bush. I am sorry that the good citizens of Elkhart, Indiana are suffering record unemployment as are many other ares of this great country. Obama will not prove to be their savior. He’s incompetent. Hillary is the only bright spot in his otherwise pathetic administration.
The Clintons are what real leadership looks like. Obama, watch and weep, as you will never be their political equal.
Well done former President Bill Clinton and should be our President Hillary Clinton in successfully securing the release of the two female journalists from N. Korea. The Clintons are an incredible team, unmatched in political skills, intelligence and diplomacy.
The DNC made an enormous mistake in betraying the Clintons for the unqualified Obama. Fools. What a tragic loss for the country and the world where they (Bill and Hill) are unmatched.
Also, journalists need to be more careful in crossing borders they shouldn’t, it not only puts their own lives at risk, it puts our nation at risk in trying to save them.

Hope doesn’t pay the bills. If they place their faith in government to turn the economy around, they’ll be sitting on that “hope” chair for a long time. Consumers are the economic engine that directs an economy, not government.

“After assuming control of government, Caesar began extensive reforms of Roman society and government. He heavily centralised the bureaucracy of the Republic and was eventually proclaimed “dictator in perpetuity.”

Well… I’d rather see the President spend tax revenues trying to buy support from the general public.

The best selling hybrids are foreign brands.
Ford has done pretty well in the hybrid market grabbing the 5th thru 8th most sold hybrids in May 2009.
But the top brands that dominate that market are Honda and Toyota with the Prius outselling all the Ford’s combined.

Just for the record… I think we SHOULD be building fuel efficient vehicles here. Especially in places where you already have the infrastructure in place to build vehicles… like Elkhart.
I used to think “the Party of NO!” was a stupid slogan… but now it seems kind of fitting.

That sentence said it all. Should and wants don’t always match up. Hybrid sales are down 40% from last year. Build all you want, someone has to purchase them.
And by saying “should” be building, your telling me what I “should” be driving. What I drive and purchase will be based on what fits my needs and wants. I don’t need someone else telling me what I should drive. Them theres fightin words! I grew up in a car crazy family so I’m touchy about my car choices.

Hmmmm….let’s take a looks at how the right wing takes a figure and lies to you.
First never assume the figure given by a right winger is true at all.
“Led by strong showings from both third-generation Prius and the gas-electric version of Ford’s Fusion, hybrid car sales in June were up 9 percent from a year earlier and rose 2 percent form May’s tally to mark the sixth consecutive monthly increase in sales volume for the segment.”
“WIth nearly all gas-electric hybrid cars qualifying for the Cash for Clunkers vouchers, hybrid sales in July grew to 3.55 percent of the new car market—its largest market share ever. New car dealers sold 35,429 hybrids, with more than half of the sales coming from the Toyota Prius.
Hybrid sales jumped by 35 percent in July compared with last month and a year ago—while sales of conventional new vehicles rose 15.4 percent for the month and were down 13 percent from July 2008.
Toyota sold 19,193 Priuses, making it one of America’s best sellers in July. Prius sales rose by 47.5 percent for the month and were up 29.7 percent from July 2008.

In these tough times, I’m glad the US government is setting a good example by cutting back on luxuries:
—Last year, lawmakers excoriated the CEOs of the Big Three automakers for traveling to Washington, D.C., by PRIVATE JET to attend a hearing about a possible bailout of their companies.
But apparently Congress is not philosophically averse to private air travel: At the end of July, the House approved nearly $200 million for the Air Force to buy three elite Gulfstream jets for ferrying top government officials and Members of Congress.
The Air Force had asked for one Gulfstream 550 jet (price tag: about $65 million) as part of an ongoing upgrade of its passenger air service.
But the House Appropriations Committee, at its own initiative, added to the 2010 Defense appropriations bill another $132 million for two more airplanes and specified that they be assigned to the D.C.-area units that carry Members of Congress, military brass and top government officials.—

Posted by: Selective | August 5, 2009, 3:25 pm 3:25 pm

It’s less than ideal, but to be fair, Toyota employs a lot of Americans. And when they sell cars in the US, it’s a good thing for US workers.
Of course, I wish American companies were building more cars that could compete with Toyota (they are getting better at it)… but given the transitional state of the US auto-industry, it’s not all that surprising that Toyota would do well.
It’s kind of tone deaf to simply declare the Cash for Clunkers program a failure… when of all of the stimulus programs out there… it actually puts money in people’s hands and supports a sector of the economy that employs millions of Americans.
Even if Toyota is a “Japanese” company, they do employ a lot more Americans than Rush Limbaugh does. And given that Republicans have been the most ardent supporters of “free trade,” it’s kind of silly now to get angry at the idea that an international company like Toyota would sell cars.

I get really resentful about their fancy jets and stuff. I also resent that Obama eats Ice Cream, has a birthday cake on his birthday, wears a suit to work, went to college, etc. I resent that his wife has a purse. And that they went on a date.
But, I am un-resentful about their government-run health care plan that they enjoy (and that we don’t).
I also do not resent when big businesses get no-bid contracts. Nor do I resent it when lawmakers who take huge donations from lobbyists deregulate the financial markets and cause the economy to collapse.
I do not resent that credit card companies can charge whatever interest rates they want. I don’t resent that our national energy policy was written by oil company executives, behind closed doors, and without any records. I don’t resent that the Republicans have effectively lobbied to limit the amount of damages an individual can be awarded by a big business, but that some grad student can be fined millions of dollars for downloading some songs on the internet. I don’t resent that the police can walk into your house and arrest you for complaining.
None of these things bother me.
But, I do get awfully resentful that the government would buy three jets.

Well… the stock market is turning around. And the housing market seems to be showing some signs of life.
Given that employment is what economists call a lagging indicator…
Reagan came into office during a recession just as it was ending, unemployment increased following the official end of the recession, and then people started getting their jobs back.
It may very well be the case that we don’t have to “hope” for improvement… we’ll just have to watch it happen.
And then what will the talking point be?
Well, We would have improved MORE if not for that dastardly Obama! We’d all be millionaires! But Obama ruined it all. That’s why your hound dog got sick and your wife left you and your car got keyed in the parking lot.
OR…
It’s just a trick! All these jobs that people have are just fake, until the election passes! The day after Obama is sworn into his second term, you’ll show up to work, and it will all just be gone. The boss will pull of his mask, and it will be Hugo Chavez! And he will be laughing at you in French!

Context IS important. So how is this country dependent on foreign innovations when it comes to hybrids? Hybrids are produced domestically. Maybe not the first ones in the game, but they are there. It’s only when Americans are forbidden to produce do they end up dependent.
The President is misleading the public into thinking that he is preventing a trend that doesn’t even exist – unless it is created by the government like with drilling for domestic oil which is more of a liberal thing anyway.

Posted by: Dazed & Confused | August 5, 2009, 3:56 pm 3:56 pm

Sorry…
I’d prefer that elected officials have access to military planes for certain occasions. When flying into war zones or during times on national crisis, the Air Force should provide secure transportation.
On the other hand, ordering 3 jets rather than 1, seems to be more like pork barrel spending than some kind of elitist desire. But, if you look at the defense budget, it’s always out of control, with lawmakers putting in earmarks for all kinds of projects for their districts. But every year, Republicans and Democrats alike line up to lard up the defense bill. And anyone who goes against it, including the president, risks being called “unamerican.”
What we really need is for Republicans and Democrats to fight against this… but I can’t imagine it happening any time in the near future. And so, it’s pointless to worry about a small percentage of the entire oinker.

Posted by: gobot | August 5, 2009, 3:56 pm 3:56 pm

I agree, hybrids aren’t the future. But they are a bridge. Developing batteries and transitioning our industry from combustion to electric are going to be key.
In this respect, helping with hybrids will help us move in that direction. But, yes, we need to get rid of gasoline engines.

“Make up your mind: is it a handful of astroturfers or an angry mob?”
Astroturfers are professional operatives who try to create the impression of a grassroots movement. If you read the memos that astroturfers have been passing on to their recruits, they basically instruct people on how to inflate their numbers. So, maybe it appears like a mob. Maybe at times, when they bus people in, they even have numbers approaching a mob.
But at the end of the day, I wouldn’t call it a mob as much as a simulated mob.
But that doesn’t mean that it can’t become a mob. I mean, look at how many “ordinary” Republicans have gotten caught up in the birther hysteria. What was once a classic election season “dirty trick” has become a belief to 58% of Republicans. On its face, its just utter nonsense… but now you have a bunch of nuts running around believing that the President of the United States is some kind of Kenyan sleeper agent.
If an astroturfer gets people whipped into a froth… says that Obama’s trying to kill their grandma or something… there’s really no telling where it will end. Maybe a violent mob… maybe just a “lone nut” worried about something he heard on Glenn Beck… but if Republicans don’t restrain themselves… it’s up to Democrats to be the grownups.

These anti-health care astroturf memos have been circulating for weeks.
Every honest person knows that the insurance companies are fighting tooth and nail to stop health care reform.
And the impotent Republicans have decided to team up with the Insurance behemoth to try to win something.
The GOP is looking forward, as always, to the next election. Looking forward for ways to trick people into voting against their interests. And the insurance companies are trying to protect their racket.
This anti-health care reform movement begins and ends with the cynical alliance between the GOP establishment and the lobbyists they work for.
If you get sucked up into the drama… I don’t know what to say. People also believed that the Blair Witch Project was a true story, too.

And we elected him to reform health care.
So, if you want to pit those millions of people who voted for health care reform AGAINST the handful of astroturfers and the angry, opportunistic Republicans who feel sort about the fact that they lost the elections… then I’m all for it.

More “hope” from the obedient media, most of whose operatives seem altogether to have lost their critical faculties”
According to rawstory, CNN “has now refused to run an ad criticizing a top health insurance executive who recently retired with a package worth some $70 million and was paid $12.2 million in total compensation last year (More details of Hanway’s salary and compensation package are available at Forbes) … [because] The ad “unnecessarily” “singles” out an individual company and person by name.”

“In the next decade, by 2020, America will once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world. We used to be number one. We will be number one again when it comes to college graduates.”
If he sends everyone to college like he wants to, we will also go from having the best colleges to the worst.

Oh by the way, there has not been a presidential town hall meeting or appearance that the questions were not picked and reviewed in advance, along with the people allowed to attend.
If you can’t take it, don’t give it out.

The only “hope” which Elkhart received today was news that Obama’s “Cap and Tax” is going down in flames just like his healthcare takeover. Elkhart is the RV manufacturing capital of America, a product which in the direct fire of this communistic eco-loon’s administration.
Obama has made it a prime mission to go after the people who would be purchasing RVs, the moderately wealthy in the 200K to 600K dollars a year income, plus his eco-loony administration plans on destroying the energy structure which moves RV and the industry.
If ABC was a real news agency, they would report the fact that this communities survival is dependent on the failure of Obama. There is an inverse relationship between Obama and this community, Success of Obama’s nutty policies will mean the destruction of this communities manufacturing base.
In fact , the exact same thing can be said of many large areas, including Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia, Omaha(Insurance capital), etc. Success of Obama means the destruction of these regions.
The only area which stands to benefit from a successful Barack Obama is Washington DC.
I hope he fails miserably.

“there has not been a presidential town hall meeting or appearance that the questions were not picked and reviewed in advance, along with the people allowed to attend.”
Nothing has been more destructive of the political process than this practice — which has been in force for some time at all levels of political “debate”, from local school board on up.
If candidates would simply refuse to participate in fixed “debate” during campaigns, maybe Der Won wouldn’t feel so comfy stage-managing His subjects even AFTER He’s been elected — however hokily — president.

Der Won today in Indiana: “you have seen the economy stabilize.”
Is He smoking crack with those Camels, or what?

So, where are we going to get the lithium most likely needed for lithium-based batteries? Given Bolivia has ~50% of global lithium reserves, it appears we are trading one dictator (Hugo Chavez) for another (Evo Morales).
BTW – Where is the electricity going to come from for this vast electric car fleet? Solar panels and wind mills?

Posted by: tjp612 | August 5, 2009, 7:24 pm 7:24 pm

A million bucks a truck to go 100 miles?
Leaving aside for a moment the propriety of Uncle Sam financing this effort, does President Obama really believe this crap?
Windmills? Please spare me from such idiocy.

jobs jobs jobs jobs,,,where are those jobs

Posted by: catman | August 5, 2009, 7:55 pm 7:55 pm

More soaring nonsensical rhetoric, but no jobs! We’ve got to imagine a future? President Obama, Elkhart has 17% unemployment. They are too busy looking for work to imagine your future where the Government controls everything including our health. And what happens to them when all the costs and taxes from your Tax and Con and corrupt Health Care plan hit them. 27% 37% unemployment. Get real Mr. President! Get real fast!

He isn’t offering hope, he is giving away money! Hope is free!

Posted by: ubu1991 | August 5, 2009, 8:46 pm 8:46 pm

Why wasnt the “great leader” talking about revival of the RV industry and getting those jobs back? His thugs and goons ruined the RV industry by raising taxes thru the roof and loading us down with gov’t debt thus preventing any kind of recovery in the private sector. Now they want to kill it off for good with cap n tax so that energy is unaffordable. Of course the enviro-thugs WANT TO DESTROY the RV industry cause those travel trailer, motorhomes, etc are not “Green” and use gas. Never mind that people love to camp and get tons of personal enjoyment and freedom from RVs – they dont approve so they want to kill this industry off. Its worse then a pipe dream – its a lie! – to say that the jobs in the RV industry will be replaced with “green” jobs making “battery trucks” that arent needed or wanted via government central planning! What a scam – wake up people before you are all serfs of the welfare state!

Posted by: rich little | August 5, 2009, 10:03 pm 10:03 pm

Great.. more college graduates without jobs. The economy isnt stabilized. Its a pipe with duct tape around it. Creating more debt and promising these “green” jobs that dont exist is socialism at it finest. Tax us more so he can out more money into the govt control
God forbid my business takes off because Obama will tax me to death if I do. No better than Bush. At least Bush didnt want to take over the a free country.

Pie-in-the-sky nonsense.Nobody ever talks about the enviormental damage from creating and destroying these lithium batteries. Lithium is a highly toxic metal with still unknown health issues when associated with car batteries. It is highly toxic to kidneys-the medication lithium carbonate is used for bipolar disorder despite a very narrow margin for safety.Lithium exposure has the potential to be the next public health issue that asbestos currently is.Of course, our current brilliant president still practices the most dangerous health activity of them all-he smokes! What educated, intelligent adult in this day and age still smokes?

The only thing Obama offers is empty rhetoric. Can Americans pay their bills and feed their families on that? One just has to wonder how long it will be before the folks who keep swallowing Obama’s vision of the new utopia start to choke on his empty words. Face it, Obama is a motivational speaker with little substance to offer.

Posted by: WhatAJoke | August 5, 2009, 11:54 pm 11:54 pm

The GOP are losers, who can’t compete, they have offer nothing of substances, they have given us nothing but misery and no ideas,no leadership, they are unable to compete in the 21 Century

Posted by: gman | August 6, 2009, 12:04 am 12:04 am

Give us one idea the GOP loser have offer, why? because they have none, they have gave no answers to problems that is relevant to our times, they are nonproductive, they can’t compete..birther rant…he is a racist rant…the socialist rant…are all of no relevance, they can’t come up with a single idea that matters, why? because they are unable to compete in the 21 Century.

What has Obama ever done besides spend other people’s money. He threw millions of other peoples money around in Chicago and achieved nothing. This man and never created anything but carbon from all his talking. He prays on emotion to advance his social engineering project.

Posted by: ubu1991 | August 6, 2009, 7:39 am 7:39 am

Obama’s not a racist…..his grandmother really IS a “typical white woman.” He’s a natural born citizen….cause we’ve all seen his long form birth certificate, you know, the one he demanded of John McCain. He’s not a socialists…..he just wants to “spread the wealth around” by taking it from the “rich.” Yeah, those conservatives, no basis whatsoever for their complaints.

When this poor excuse for a president wants to avoid criticism for the economy, he blames Bush. When he wants to claim victory for the economy, it’s the obama economy. He stated only months ago that Caterpillar would hire back all of its laid-off employees if HIS stimulus package passed. Caterpillar ended up laying off more. You far-left lunatics got what you wanted. But, is this what you sound-minded Dems and Indies were after? As the saying goes: It’s not Bush, it’s obama, stupid!

The worm is turning…afraid it will become a python soon and strangle America. His disapproval rates are consitantly rising and rightfully so, if I weren’t so broke I would enjoy this ride!

Markos Moulitsas said this about the Senate: “With 60 votes, the Democrats now own the chamber. Any failures are theirs alone.”
