Clinton’s Coup, Obama’s Dilemma

The smile on Kim Jong-Il's face said it all.

He squeezed every ounce of benefit from the release of Laura Ling and Euna Lee. A coup for Clinton too. For the White House?  More of a dilemma. They had to send Clinton once the North Koreans asked for him. But what do they do if the Iranians play the same card with those three hikers?

Oh get real George. This isn’t a dilemma for President Obama no matter how hard you spin it. The Koreans realize they screwed up. Nothing wrong with letting them save a little face while they may straighten up and realize they are better off without the nuclear B.S.

Thank You, Mr. President, Bill Clinton! You did something Obama could NEVER do! Again, I stand by my statement that Hillary should have been our President. Never underestimate the power of a Clinton. Watch out, Obama!

Oh a real delimma, we talk with countries. I thought he campaigned on this.

I still miss Bill Clinton. I miss the peace, the sanity, and the prosperity that we had pre-Bush II. And if I could have voted Bill a third term, I would have.
I wish we had someone like him in office now.

My question is who paid for this trip by Clinton and the girls- taxpayers or Al Gore who should be paying as these stupid individuals work for him!!

get real,
President Obama had everything to do with this.
Thank you Pres. Clinton
Thank you Pres. Obama

Negotiations, dignity, cooperation, and success. What a concept! Credit where credit is due. We have a good President. We have a good Secretary of State and we have a wonderful ex president. Things around the world could start running smoothly for a change.

The best way I can sum up my feelings is to say “Thank you Mr. Presidents!” Unfortunately it took eight years of Bush for the country to realize that an intolerant stance is not useful in a world that yearns for tolerance. I don’t see this as a dilemma for Pres Obama, instead a victory for our country.

Do you really think that President Obama had nothing to do with this? I have a bridge to sell you! How on earth would a Private citizen like Bill Clinton get to “waltz” into NK to free those Women? Stop trying to start somthing and give credit to both men for sticking their necks out to bring home citizens. Thats what good and effective Presidents do!

I could think of no better job for Bill Clinton–the unoffical partner to Hillary.

I think it is silly to paint this as a dilemma for President Obama. It’s called diplomacy. I realize it looks so strange b/c we are used to 8 years of “you’re either with us or against us!: bomb them until they say uncle” foreign policy, but this is what the american people voted for. This may make the talking head’s jobs more difficult, but I have confidence that you guys will figure out how to make it work. Hopefully you’ll dump all the retired generals you’ve hired as “analysts” and go round up some real foreign policy experts and we can start having substantive discussions in the country again. This is a victory for the Obama Administration and a wonderful moment for the journalists and their families period.
Regarding those hikers now captive in Iran, has anyone bothered to find out what the heck those hikers were thinking? Who goes hiking in a war zone?

Who is the White House fooling when they state this was an ‘entirely private’ delegation, and that it was only about ‘the 2 journalists’.
Clearly, that is a lie when N Korea’s chief nuclear negotiator shows up to greet a former U.S. President who’s wife is currently Sec. of State, no less.
‘Twas not a bow before the Saudi King, nor an official visit by a former U.S President to pay ransom for 2 ‘journalists’, that just happen to work for the former President’s VP

Can’t we just celebrate a happy ending? I am so thankful we finally have grown-ups in charge!

USS Cole, First World Trade center bombing, Khobar Towers and freedom to plan 9/11. Yeah, I do miss the peace and diplomacy under Bill Clinton. The world truly understood and appreciated his ability to talk.

I wouldn’t have wanted my daughters riding alone in a plane with that leecherous old man…once again it looks like the government is just going to cave into any and every demand made by a foreign country…odrama’s got none

Let’s not forget who divided Korea. It’s not as if we don’t, as a nation, have any skin in this game.
I find it fascinating, and a little gratifying that it was Clinton they wanted to see. If it had been Obama, THAT would have been a dilemma

Posted by: Ellen Sander | August 5, 2009, 1:05 pm 1:05 pm

What a can of worms this has opened! Does the administration really not think that every rogue nation will demand the same respect and attention? Here we go!

Posted by: shawn | August 5, 2009, 1:54 pm 1:54 pm

George,
what would you have advised? Let Lisa Ling and Euna Lee rot in jail for a principal. I don’t see the dilemna. Clinton got the women releases, everything next is up to us.

Posted by: Sujay Parikh | August 5, 2009, 1:58 pm 1:58 pm

No matter what good the Obama administration and the democrats do, the republicans are going to be critical.
Too criticize bringing those two girls home is outrageous. And they are suppose to be the FAMILY VALUE party. Baloney!

Posted by: Wynoma Hollis | August 5, 2009, 2:05 pm 2:05 pm

Think you’re way off base to think Obama is in some sort of delemna. Without dooubt he was in on all this for the last few months. And,Prez Clinton was the obvious and perhaps only choice to go. Brave for them both.

Give credit where due. Of course there was groundwork from Obama, State Dept, and others prior to Bill Clinton’s effort.Obviously, he wouldn’t have gone if certain assurances didn’t exist.
This is a huge plus for both the Clintons and Obama not to mention the 2 reporters who are now free.
This had to be accomplished “privately”, hence Bill’s friend Bing supplied a private jet. This was well done by all and it proves that using the Clinton’s was a plus for all concerned. The Clinton’s are terrific.
The right wing will put this effort down and say stupidly, “we don’t negotiate with terrorists”. Their position to critize anything this administration does, along with an added new twist of sending shills and political operatives [reminiscent of Gore/Bush thugs] to disrupt and intimidate Democratic meetings on healthcare.
Nevertheless when everyone in the administration is on the same page and uses all available talent to craft a strategy, we see something terrific like the release of two reporters.
I believe Obama must come to realize the GOP is toxic and not ready to see a doctor.

From what I’m seeing in some posts is the inability of some bloggers to realize that negotiations re: nuclear and other political concerns about N. Korea can only be accomplished directly through background from State, and directly enacting Obama’s positions.
Anything as delicate as this hostage situation that is designed to save face for N Korea, and must be enacted by a past President who can offer the necesessary gravitas and respect.
Remember Carter’s failures with hostages? Timidity, timing, and too little too late and nothing was accomplished.
The wingnuts complaining about dealing with the enemy have forgotten Reagan and Iran Contra? To mention just a few GOP runs at diplomacy which in the past 8 years has been disastrous for our country. They have bungled or ignored every opportunity.

George… N. Korea new what he was doing… he followed the DOTS
Journalists …to Al Gore…to Bill Clinton…to Hilary Clinton… to President Obama Just follow the dots… it worked!!!!

Thankyou Mr. President once again the Clintons rise to the rescue. The Dems worried the if Mrs. Clinton were elected President, President Bill Clinton would be to involved. Well he is involved now anyhow. How many more times will he be needed?

Posted by: Mike | August 5, 2009, 10:01 pm 10:01 pm

welcome home…too bad we couldnt keep politics out of this. What a touching moment how Ms. Ling talked about walking through the door to a “meeting” and Bill Clinton is standing there. I didn’t care for him too much but this was a good moment for all. And the hugs with the family off the plane…it just made you feel good.
Why does everything have to be so negative? Rejoice for a change.

Just a casual conversation between one commie to another. Look at all the commies in the good ole WhiteHouse.

You may miss the peace, but under his watch all of the bad things you mentioned happened was being orchestrated. As a good talker Bill did not pay attention and let his guard down..Now we have a GREAT talker…hmmmm

There is no dilemma!
Bravo Mr. Clinton!
Well done President Obama!
The U.S.A. wouldn’t be in so many bad situations around the world if they would think about their foreign policies before they run around the world like it is their playground.

I am happy that the two ladies are back safe.
What price will the USA pay for this stupidity.
Clinton scores some face time on international news. If these ladies had not been doing illegal work for Mr.Gore who seems to not get enough publicity, these two would have never been an issue. Chalk it up to Gores ego.
You can trace almost all the trouble happening in the USA today back to the Clinton Era. Nafta, Failed Health Legislation, deregulation of utilities and banks , etc etc. Whitewater relived.
Now the neophyte Obama wants to follow in the masters shoeprints.

This is called back door diplomacy. You send in someone to get arrested, then you send your guy in to talk about what the USA can do for them.
Basic Backdoor Diplomacy 101.
Let see now we got hikers in iran, hmmm wonder what we can do for them? We just get a reporter back?
Gore can send in some cameras maybe, get the Iranian presidents spin on this.

This was a regrettable loss from a number of points of view.
Aside from the childishness of our new, unfortunate administration, which absurdly thinks it can charm the world with the same puerile drivel he provoked nitwits in sufficient number to vote him in (most of these delta minuses now experiencing buyers’ remorse, big time), we have kowtowed to a rogue government that has slapped us in the face publicly a half-dozen times since the start of this numbnuts administration [that is quickly bankrupting the US and sending us into inflationary overdrive].
We have given props to a dictator starving millions and selling nuclear secrets and missile tech to our direst enemies. Despite our warnings, he has laughed at us, and continues to arm our worst foreign affairs problems: Syria, China, Iran. We have given street cred to a pornographer and unbounded gourmand who has ignored his people’s lifeneeds since his advent began, taking over from his equally corrupt and cruel father, Kim Il Sung.
We have now also encouraged the continued figleaf cover for kidnapping our nitwit citizens and so-called journalists–a readymade excuse to garner world press and ink and photogs with the snap of a court order.
Calling Bill Clinton, folks? Just kidnap and falsely charge our dazed citizens wandering around without a clue. The leftist lib ‘hikers’ who somehow ignored the warnings of guards not to cross into unfriendly borders are another opportunity to humble and abase the US–and just watch the dreadful, naive Mr White House waste more hyperbolic press ops (and our fast-eroding tolerance) on trying to spring these indigenous Marxist boneheads-with-an-agenda. This time, his efforts will not resolve with an embarrassing and cheapening effort like a pointless beerfest on the lawn. How low we have fallen, with a president who so little understands the nuances of international diplomacy, and crawls and humbles the US to every tinpot cracker the world over.
This hugely embarrassing administration cannot end too soon. Of course, however soon it ends, we will have been financially, economically, diplomatically, governmentally and even sociologically compromised.
A success? A swift gander at the ashen face of our former president will show his opinion of this joyride into the darkness of the DPRK.
Luckily, the opinions expressed by so many children on this thread is dismissible as wishful thinking, unrelated to reality, fact or history. Alas, these are the people who continue to support this strange and unsupportable administration.

If it weren’t for term limits, Bill Clinton would probably still be President today…he remains, by far, the most popular politician on the planet. (Had it not been Asia’s turn, he would probably have been named Secretary-General.)
The Republicans (them again!) pushed term limits to prevent another FDR…they’ve also used the same tactic at the state and local level to legally force out politicians they couldn’t defeat at the ballot box otherwise.
It doesn’t always get them the desired effect, however…they managed to force out Willie Brown from the California assembly, but then he popped up again for a while as San Francisco mayor, an arguably even more prestigious position.

FORMER PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON WAS A VERY WELL LIKE PERSON TO THE WHOLE WORLD HE SPEAKES FROM THE HEART. I WISH WE COULD HAVE THE CLINTON WHITE HOUSE BACK, THAT WAS EIGHT YEARS, I THOUGHT OF THE BEST OUR NATION WAS. IF IT TAKES A FORMER PRESIDENT TO SAVE A LIFE SO BE IT. HIM AND HIS WIFE ARE THE BEST OUR GOVERMENT HAVE RIGHT NOW.
