Republicans Go Grassroots, Taking Health Care to “the People”

ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf reports: They did not directly mention the loud, boisterous protesters who have disrupted a handful of Democrats as they held town hall meetings on health care reform in the past week, but at a press conference this afternoon Republican leaders referred repeatedly to hearing directly from “the people” when the Senate recesses for most of August. This talking point feeds into the perception of grassroots frustration with the health reform proposals that Youtube videos of the protests has created. “August will be a good opportunity for all of us, regardless of what our leanings may be, on how to deal with this issue, to go home, interact with our constituents, and come back here in September with a stronger understanding of exactly where the American people might be on this most important issue,” said Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, after a caucus meeting with other Republicans in the Senate. “I'm looking forward to — to actually getting out in the month of August across my state, as my colleagues are, and hearing directly from the people about how they perceive the impact of the things that are being debated out here in terms of health care solutions,” said Sen. John Thune, R-South Dakota. Later, Thune added: “August will give us all an opportunity to — to be out, to hear directly from people in our individual states, and hopefully we'll be able to come back in September, and push that reset button, and actually get down and talk about things that would reduce costs, that would improve access, and that wouldn't cost the American economy jobs.” August will be an important month for health care. As Democrats spar over competing partisan proposals in the House and bipartisan Senators on the Finance Committee continue their secret negotiations toward a bipartisan bill, the momentum, or lack thereof, for health reform when Congress returns after Labor Day could make or break the effort.

…an opportunity for them to go out and TELL US what is good for us. The Amercian people are not happy with this. August should be an interesting month.

One of the women I work with is going through a nasty divorce. She is making use of every protection liberals in Congress have passed over the years for abused spouses, while applying for housing aid, free school lunch for the kid and going to the doctor every few months because she is, naturally, obeses and unhealthy. Yet, last fall she told me she would never vote for Obama because “he’s a socialist.” That’s the Republican base in a nutshell. I wouldn’t be surprised if she signed up for “cash for clunkers” next.

The big money republicans do not want to help the AVERAGE American. They havev gotten us in this financial mess and the insurance companies are press
suring the repubs to do everything they can to stop this health care plan so they can continue to reap the big rewards they have been getting for years. I worked for one of the biggest insurance companies for over 16 years and believe me, they take in the big bucks. This has got to change and now. Go Obama

Judy,
Repubs are not against health care reform, we’re against gov’t run health care. Look at social security, medicare, medicaid, etc and you’ll understand why.

Posted by: stdntDrvr | August 4, 2009, 4:39 pm 4:39 pm

the minute that pres barky and congress say they will have exactly the same health insurance as the rest of us then and only then will i cheer loudly in support otherwise aux barricades.

Posted by: don tufts | August 4, 2009, 4:39 pm 4:39 pm

Sure, medicaid/medicare are great programs, but they are also money pits. They need to clean up these messes first. Gov’t should do something to lower the cost of health care. I don’t believe that a gov’t run solution is the best option. My opinion does not make me ‘ignorant,’ just informed.

Posted by: stdntDrvr | August 4, 2009, 4:46 pm 4:46 pm

“Gov’t should do something to lower the cost of health care.” ” I don’t believe that a gov’t run solution is the best option.”
These two statements contradict themselves. You think government should do something to lower costs, but you don’t trust government to offer a public insurance option? And that is what the Obama plan is suggesting, lowering costs, and offering a public option to compete with the insurance companies, not having a single payer, “government-run” health care system. You do know that, don’t you?

Posted by: Amy | August 4, 2009, 5:10 pm 5:10 pm

What frustration? Of who? So ONLY Republicans does not have healthcare? What are you trying to imply? That the 50-60 million that are un-insured are ALL REPUBLICANS? Who is paying you, may I ask?

Posted by: GuyFromLA | August 4, 2009, 5:10 pm 5:10 pm

Hearing directly from the people — ha! The Republican Party propaganda machine turned out today in sufficient numbers to disrupt any and all civil discussion about the need for health care reform and Congressional plans to bring it about. This will probably continue right through August while Congress is in recess, health insurance companies sparing no expense or effort to protect their rice “pudding” bowls.

16,000 doctors in this nation supports single payer system. Just check their website

I was a Democrat until this corrupt administration came into office. I am now an independent, and a teaparty supporter and no insurance company pays me to go to the town hall meetings. I go because we have a run away government that is giving away the farm without making people be responsible and not expecting the government to give them everything. If you have a blackberry, a cell phone, a HD television, YOU CAN PAY FOR HEALTH CARE.

It is unfortunate the protesters are getting money from the private health insurance lobbyists to make unruly protest. It won’t help them in the future. It is like spiting against the wind, it will haunt them. They don’t know what they are doing God forgive them.

This Dems VS Repub’s on healthcare is such a crock. I want healthcare that is resonable, I’ve paid for my own HC policy for over 15 years. I’m not rich, but neither am I stupid. I don’t want a bigger goverment. Period! It seems like goverment is taking over all the big money companies…………Banking, auto companies, now healthcare. It makes you wonder doesn’t it?
Wouldn’t it be better to see the goverment FIX the existing fraud and problems with Medicare & Medicaid? Lets clean up the problems we ALREADY have and THEN take on HC reform. I’d have a lot more faith in our goverment if they did this first. Until then, I will not support this new reform. Give me a reason to have faith that this will better run then medicare & Medicaid.

Hello, this country is in a huge financial mess. Thanks liberals. We need less government involvment, not more. I have never heard or felt as much anger as I do now. Read about Russia 1998, coming to a town near you. When you ignore and distort history, you are sure to repeat it.

Posted by: fedupwithlibs | August 4, 2009, 6:45 pm 6:45 pm

All you lefties who keep complaining that the evil republicans are in bed with the insurance companies, please answer me one question. Why should I pay for your health insurance? I work hard to pay for my families health coverage. I am not even remotely wealthy but I manage to provide. Now Obama and his ilk want to tax my health coverage meaning I’ll have to struggle even harder to provide for my family because you can’t or won’t provide for yours.

Posted by: Aaron | August 4, 2009, 6:49 pm 6:49 pm

The only “orchestrated” town hall meetings are the ones the Mr. Obama attends.
The government is not listening to what the people are saying.

Posted by: Larry | August 4, 2009, 6:53 pm 6:53 pm

So you think that by having a Democratic senator on your news program claiming that “none of this is really the grass roots action it is supposed to be,” that none of us feel the way these protestors do and that all the fuss is only imaginary! I for one am glad someone is speaking for me as I am unable to travel to where these meetings are held, and I definitley agree with the protestors. The government could not handle our medical needs any more than it could handle medicare and medicaide.

You’re wrong Amy, it does not lower costs I transfers costs fron those who want everything provided for them to those who actually work for what they have. It robs from the producers and gives to the slugs! It’s theaft on a massive scale!

You are right Catherine in that government screws everything up. That would be the republican party screwing everything up. The grand party of no and nothing.

Posted by: rush dimbaugh | August 4, 2009, 7:01 pm 7:01 pm

Just so you know, no health insurance company ever paid me a dime for anything. I’d probably fall over dead if they even offered. This is about Americans speaking up. It doesn’t matter if you’re republican, democrat, independent, liberal, left wing, right wing. Who cares. A samller goverment means it’s better for ALL of us. The only ones who will really benefit from another humongous arm of goverment is the people who get the job to run it, which we will all again have to PAY for. Smaller goverment means we get to keep more of what we work for. How can that be wrong?

Those of you against health care reform don’t know squat about it. I’ve lived in a fully socialized health system (UK) and one which offered a strong public option (S. Korea) and both were much better than the US system (not to mention both also have thriving private insurers). This was particularly true because I couldn’t even get insurance in the states without forfeiting my food and rent. And don’t give me the you spent it on luxuries or didn’t work hard enough bs. I worked in a kitchen for 7 years at 60-80 hours a week depending on the season and demand for the catering we also provided. The small business I worked for didn’t offer any coverage and the insurance companies wanted over $500 a month (and I was a healthy 24 then)… with rent and other unavoidable expenses the numbers couldn’t be made to work. I lived in the cheapest housing available in my city, drove my old chevy beater only when I couldn’t walk, and didn’t even have a gd cell phone as the land line was cheaper. I grew up poor and have no problem making sacrifices to my comfort in order to survive. As for those so comfortable with the status quo, just wait till you lose your job or are dropped from your policy just when you need it most. Finally, this isn’t about free health care it’s about affordable care and everybody watching everyone else’s back… you know acting like a community, like we care about our people. Get over your selfish selfs already.

It has nothing to do with republican or democrat, rush dimbaugh. It’s about a bunch of busy body leftists sticking their noses in my business and their hands in my pockets. Most of todays Republican party is as left wing as the dems. They don’t care about the size of government either. Just like the Dems, all they want is power. So get off this Dem v. Rep horse hockey.

Posted by: Aaron | August 4, 2009, 7:14 pm 7:14 pm

Facts the dems don’t talk about. Oh, and this came from a study done at that conservative bastion Stanford University
1. Americans have better survival rates than Europeans for common cancers.
2. Americans have lower cancer mortality rates than Canadians.
3. Americans have better access to treatment for chronic diseases than patients in other developed countries.
4. Americans have better access to preventive cancer screening than Canadians.
5. Lower-income Americans are in better health than comparable Canadians.
6. Americans spend less time waiting for care than patients in Canada and the United Kingdom.
7. People in countries with more government control of health care are highly dissatisfied and believe reform is needed.
8. Americans are more satisfied with the care they receive than Canadians.
9. Americans have better access to important new technologies such as medical imaging than do patients in Canada or Britain.
10. Americans are responsible for the vast majority of all health care innovations.

I don’t make a lot of money NOW but my wife and I manage. Sometimes with the help of willing friends and family. BUT I DON’T ROB MY NEIGHBORS TO PROVIDE FOR MY FAMILY! “I’m alright Jack, keep your hands off my stack!”

personally I want a politically appointed and unaccountable “Czar” to have all my health information and hold it in a centralized, digital database. I want this information to include all my health and personal data including any applicable data like: health history, prescription history, DNA, sexual history, alcohol/drug use, blood type, finger prints, mental health history, disease history, veneral disease history, adoption history, social security numbers, innoculation records, and anything else that might be useful for political reasons, blackmail, fraud, identity fraud, tracking of my person, or setting me up for criminal/civil crimes and penalties. Furthermore I also demand that Obama forces me to pay private companies (insurance companies) for this right to health care and for yet another “Czar” to get a nice paycheck and control over the population. Orwell would be proud of this guy.

The Democrats are trying to sell American on the notion that all of these Tea Party Groups and other grassroots groups are right wing nut cases and are being set up by the Republican party to disrupt the townhall meetings—nothing could be further from the truth—-I am an Rn in an innercity hospital—I probably see more waste than those not in the healthcare system–Yes we need reform—with all of the so called “intelligent ones” in our country no one can come up with anything other than “gut it” and start with a government program—I am proudly a member of Cincinnati 912 and the Cincinnati Tea Party—-these are sincere, well informed individuals who are standing watch over the “slick” antics of our so called” unrepresenting representatives”—-Are they that disconnected from reality to fool themselves into thinking the country just loves what they are doing—-COME DOWN FROM YOUR IVORY TOWER!!!!!!!!We the People have something to say to you—-

LEAD, FOLLOW, OR GET OUT OF THE WAY. (Thomas Paine)
We have the 37th worst quality of healthcare in the developed world. Conservative estimates are that over 120,000 of you dies each year in America from treatable illness that people in other developed countries don’t die from. Rich, middle class, and poor a like. Insured and uninsured. Men, women, children, and babies. This is what being 37th in quality of healthcare means.
I know that many of you are angry and frustrated that REPUBLICANS! In congress are dragging their feet and trying to block TRUE healthcare reform. What republicans want is just a taxpayer bailout of the DISGRACEFUL GREED DRIVEN PRIVATE FOR PROFIT health insurance industry, and the DISGRACEFUL GREED DRIVEN PRIVATE FOR PROFIT healthcare industry. A trillion dollar taxpayer funded private health insurance bailout is all you really get without a robust government-run public option available on day one. Co-OP’s ARE NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR A GOVERNMENT-RUN PUBLIC OPTION. They are a fraud being pushed by the GREED DRIVEN PRIVATE FOR PROFIT health insurance industry that is KILLING YOU!
YOU CANT HAVE AN INSURANCE MANDATE WITHOUT A ROBUST PUBLIC OPTION. MANDATING PRIVATE FOR PROFIT HEALTH INSURANCE AS YOUR ONLY CHOICE WOULD BE A DISASTER AND UNETHICAL, CORRUPT, AND MORALLY REPUGNANT. AND PROBABLY UNCONSTITUTIONAL AS WELL.
These industries have been slaughtering you and your loved ones like cattle for decades for profit. Including members of congress and their families. These REPUBLICANS are FOOLS!
Republicans and their traitorous allies have been trying to make it look like it’s President Obama’s fault for the delays, and foot dragging. But I think you all know better than that. President Obama inherited one of the worst government catastrophes in American history from these REPUBLICANS! And President Obama has done a brilliant job of turning things around, and working his heart out for all of us.
But Republicans think you are just a bunch of stupid, idiot, cash cows with short memories. Just like they did under the Bush administration when they helped Bush and Cheney rape America and the rest of the World.
But you don’t have to put up with that. And this is what you can do. The Republicans below will be up for reelection on November 2, 2010. Just a little over 13 months from now. And many of you will be able to vote early. So pick some names and tell their voters that their representatives (by name) are obstructing TRUE healthcare reform. And are sellouts to the insurance and medical lobbyist.
Ask them to contact their representatives and tell them that they are going to work to throw them out of office on November 2, 2010, if not before by impeachment, or recall elections. Doing this will give you something more to do to make things better in America. And it will make you feel better too.
There are many resources on the internet that can help you find people to call and contact. For example, many social networking sites can be searched by state, city, or University. Be inventive and creative. I can think of many ways to do this. But be nice. These are your neighbors. And most will want to help.
I know there are a few democrats that have been trying to obstruct TRUE healthcare reform too. But the main problem is the Bush Republicans. Removing them is the best thing tactically to do. On the other hand. If you can easily replace a democrat obstructionist with a supportive democrat, DO IT!
You have been AMAZING!!! my people. Don’t loose heart. You knew it wasn’t going to be easy saving the World. :-)
God Bless You
I REST MY CASE

This is not an grass root effort to take health care to the people… It is an organized effort by insurance lobbyist with the praise of the GOP to disrupt town hall meetings.
Just as these inconsiderate people have a right to free speech, we also have the same right to be able to listen and have a mature dialog with our representatives.
These tactics demonstrate the extreme desperation of the insurance giants that are dumping millions of dollars a day to delay and kill health care reform… It is disgusting.
And for the GOP to praise this kind of immature bullying is to clearly see that they are in bed with the insurance giants just as some bluedogs who also benefit greatly from large contributions from the insurance industry… Bluedogs have learned to “heel” on command…

Aaron,
It’s more likely that liberals would be paying for the health care of conservatives. The states with uninsured rates below 10% are all Dem- Hawaii, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Maine, Pennsylvania and Iowa.

Any of you serious about knowing what’s really going on in this country and the world, be it health care, war, energy, global warming, etc. should read Hegel, specifically read about the Hegelian Dialectic. This is all smoke and mirrors. The government is taking over everything and I mean everything. It doesn’t really matter who the President is. After you’re done reading about that read about the SPP Security and Prosperity Partnership aka The North American Union which will also take you to information about the new coin of the realm the “Amero”. Then check out the NAFTA Super Highway. I’m telling you folks, things are moving forward. While we sit here babbling about republicans and democrats, pointing our fingers at the left or right, they’re out there cementing their own power for the foreseeable future.

Hold it. Enough with the insults. We’re all on this Titanic together, and it’s time to bail out. No more handouts, no more unfettered spending by the biggest bunch of spenders in history. We don’t need to ‘fix’ anything in this country. We need term limits! And America, we need to get it: we’re all in need of prayer, amen?

I cannot recall a single business that the Govt. is in ( post Office, medicare, farm support, Social Security, , etc. etc. ) that is run efficiently, or at a profit, or has competent management. Now they think they can run an auto co. or another health program. They complain about bonuses paid and lack of shareholders approval yet give themselves raise after raise with out taxpayer’s approval. TAXPAYERS are the govt’s shareholders. I am sick tired of the sorry administration we have trying to give away even more to the ones that donot pay to suport the govt. and taking away from those of us that do. I think we have an president that would like to be a dictator, instead of a leader.

BALONEY. THE US ECONOMY PAYS 16.9 PERCENT OUT IN TOTAL MEDICAL EVERY YEAR. IN TAIWAN THEY PAY 6 PERCENT TOTAL. PLUS, THEY CAN USE ANY DOCTOR, ANY INSURANCE, AND GET IMMEDIATE CARE FOR ANY AILMENT WHATSOEVER UP TO 50 DOCTOR VISITS PER MONTH PER AILMENT, PER CITIZEN. ALL WITH THE MOST ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY. THEY’VE HAD IT FOR 10 YEARS NOW AND THE DOCTORS GET PAID AS WELL OR BETTER THAN THEY WERE IN THE OLD DAYS. WHY? THEY CARE FOR THEIR CITIZENS AND HEALTH CARE IS A RIGHT, NOT A PRIVILEGE. LOOK UP TAIWAN’S SYSTEM, YOU’LL BE AMAZED. DON’T CALL IT SOCIALIST, TAIWAN IS WAY MORE ANTI-COMMUNIST THAN THE GOP ARE… LIKE 100X MORE.

The GOP has this drill down cold:
1. Use apocalyptic rhetoric with Christian religious and Caucasian racial subtexts to inflame fear, bigotry and extremism among the uneducated and intolerant.
2. When liberals object, say you were only joking and accuse them of being humorless.
3. Keep turning up the heat and act surprised when somebody finally heeds your calls for extreme action.
4. If violence occurs, be sure to say you were only speaking figuratively and you are being unfairly blamed.
5. Keep your subsequent celebrations behind closed doors.

Msnbc just aired three videos that conclusively prove that Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, and Newt Gingrich, are nothing but lying scum determined to go to any lengths to defeat health care reform. What did each of the videos show? They showed Palin, Limbaugh, and Gingrich, specifically supporting, on television and radio, end-of-life or advance care directives (living wills) identical to those mentioned in the health care reform bills, which these scum balls now describe as calling for “death panels”, the “killing of the elderly and disabled”, etc. In fact, Sarah Palin went so far as Governor of Alaska as to sign a declaration setting aside a day to spread the message to Alaskans that end-of-life or advance care directives are beneficial and that every person should have one. People, do yourself a favor. Get the facts for yourself. For God’s sake don’t rely on pathological liars such as the aforementioned persons to tell you what is in the health care bills. These patently unpatriotic morons have one agenda, which is to see that President Barack Obama, and therefore the United States of America, fails in an attempt to reform a health care system that is seriously broken and causing 1 million Americans to go bankrupt every year and 2,000 Americans to lose their health care coverage every day. On this and every other important issue facing our country, we must not succumb to those who use fear, ignorance, and misinformation to defeat proposals that are good for the American people.

How about getting the information from the source about Government healthcare instead of listening to government polititions that are paid under the table from Insurance companies and Drug companies.
Contact Canada, or England, and ask a surgeon, Nurse, or someone with a family member in their age with medical problems and ask they are being taken care now.
Not 8 years ago, and then I will believe news cast.
I know how the how drug companies and Insurance Companies are, I worked for one for 6 years.
they will do anything to keep the public from knowing the truth on how much they charge and how little they care about your health!!!

you republican anti goverment program types are a hoot!!!you really are!!you seem to ignore the fact that the private insurance companies are greedy and wholly profit motivated!!that means they take in monthly premium payments from people that think they are 100%percent covered ,only to find out later how wrong they were to believe that, all the way to the bankruptcy courts!! any chance these insurance companies get to deny coverage or claims or procedures they look for vigorously and jump on! some of the money they take in premiums is spent on lobbying efforts to kill any kind of needed reforms.i would never stand in support of these robber barron profiteers!!i believe we need a goverment option for healthcare i would trust a goverment option more than i would ever trust any greedy profit motivated corporate bloodsucker private insurance company!!
