Schwarzenegger ‘Garage Sale’ Hits eBay, Craig’s List

ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: It's a 1997 Ford Taurus. It's green. It has 109,305 miles, a few scratches, and "minor damage." Sound like a clunker? Not now that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has gotten his hands on it — literally. The California governor signed the vehicle's sun visor — and those of about a dozen other state-owned cars — and the state has put it for sale on eBay.  It's the latest in the Golden State's attempt to take a bite out of a gaping budget deficit. As part of the "Great California Garage Sale," the state of California is selling off hundreds of items the state doesn't need anymore — computers, old desks, office supplies, used cars — and confiscated items, including jewelry, a racing bike, a surfboard, and an antique piano. The main auction itself, featuring some 500 cars and a vast quantity of knickknacks and accessories of assorted value, will take place this Friday and Saturday in Sacramento. But the state is getting the bidding — and the online buzz — rolling by listing some items early on Craig's List and eBay. "By posting items online, Californians and people from other states and around the world can participate in the Great California Garage Sale," Schwarzenegger, R-Calif., said in a statement. "This is a win-win for the state and for shoppers. Together we are eliminating waste and providing great deals in this tough economy. I encourage everyone to log on or attend this great event."Will it work? As of Tuesday afternoon, the Taurus had drawn only six bids, with the top offer at $530. And you can download the photograph of the governor signing the visor for free.

Kick out all of the illigal aliens..problem solved this is what happens in a traditionally Democratic state. Best thing that ever happend to them….This is where the rest of the country is going….to hell cause everyone wants a government handout.

DAT IS LAME!

Hey stop complainng about it the man is trying to do what he can to fix the problem, I don’t see the Federal Government lending a helping hand in any of this the State asked for help and as of yet nothing but they can bail out the car company’s I would think that they would want to help out Calif.

Sell Pelosi? Hell, we can’t give her away, no one will take her and she won’t leave!

California was ruin by all you people moving here. I am a native and it use to beautiful until everyone came here and raised the cost of our house’s. Took our jobs and made it so crowded. It is the best place to live so quit being jealous!

Really??? I can’t wait until this man’s term is up. He’s all but destroyed our education system in this state, and how much of a dent does he think this is going to make in the deficit that we have? None, just like all of this other ridiculous ideas. They’ve all fallen flat, and he’s the one that’s responsible for that.

Posted by: socal | August 25, 2009, 3:54 pm 3:54 pm

the federal gov DOES NOT need to lend a helping hand to fix the problem. California needs to get rid of its free medical care/welfare etc for illegal aliens. Raise their taxes, cut their expenses and live within their needs. California is the only state in the country that requires all students be taught in public schools in their native language. Cut your free ride to the illegals, make everyone speak English (wow, what a concept…learn the language of the country you want to live in) and maybe Ca can afford to pay their own bills

Arnie has been governor for some time. He’s has plenty of time to use his Republican ideals of fiscal responsibility to control government spending.
Oh, Wait. Republicans do the opposite of what they say.

Like to see what any of these people criticizing the Governor would do in his shoes … Probably not much but complain … Considering what he has to work with, and an entrenched Democratic state legislature, Schwarzenegger is doing pretty well … Every state needs to be selling off their “junk” … If only we could “sell off” the “entitled” politicians too …

Thank God we have a mixed bag of people here. Could not live in a Red state people are too weird!!!!!!!!!! Red states don’t have problems because no one wants to live there.

Posted by: dvasquez | August 25, 2009, 4:15 pm 4:15 pm

Oh, well, there are idiots born everyday, who would jump at the chance to pay big bucks for a worthless car, with a signature on the visor.

Posted by: Rick McDaniel | August 25, 2009, 4:28 pm 4:28 pm

If CA is so lame and “gay blue”, why does it dominate most of the red states combined with size of economy, scope of technical and artistic innovation, have a disproportionate number of world class schools and research? Sure it has problems like everywhere else but it’s easy to pretend “your” state is so much better because x, y, or z when your a single issue type of thinker. I don’t live there anymore, but overall it had some incredible assets (people included) you can’t find anywhere else.

Posted by: Eric | August 25, 2009, 4:43 pm 4:43 pm

its about time arnie…sell off the state assets and live within a budget. its time to confront whats killing health care and this state….illegal immigration. obama wont bail out california because arnie refuses to bow to the s.e.i.u. personally i dont want our state bailed out by the feds. we need to live within our means peiod. obama needs to worry about chicago not california. also california needs to keep more money here rather than shipping it to washington

Posted by: catman | August 25, 2009, 4:47 pm 4:47 pm

Kill 2 birds with one stone… Put ten illegal’s in each of the 500 cars and send them back to Mexico; 5.000 less 5500 less problems.

Posted by: frank | August 25, 2009, 4:48 pm 4:48 pm

Good Question….The liberals took over. Not saying there are not smart productive people in CA. Just the number of producers are outnumbered by the takers….that equals a budget deficit….simple math my friends. Bleeding heart liberals want to give money to the weak/illegal to get elected…aka Pelosi and gang. Colorado went Blue this year and now I read the polls we woke up in time and are back to good old red again. Study Darwin…

I think this is a great idea. I’ve have seen waste of California’s tax money for years. I’ve seen trucks and cars sitting in cycloned fenced areas of California not being used and a;ways wondering why?? I also know from experience that our prison system is wasting so much money the Governor would probably choke if really knew how much. I used to visit a friend in prison so I know first hand the waste that is going on there. It’s not all down on paper in black and white. I hope the Gov. makes a lot of money off the sale of these items that we as taxpayers have all paid for. I say smart move. At least he’s got some new and inventive ways of creating money for the state which is in bad shape. I was born and raised in California and if all the people who have invaded this state would leave just maybe we could afford to live here again.

GOOD FOR YOU ARNOLD

I think the racist accusations don’t work anymore. Whenever someone is critial of Obama and illegal aliens we are racist. You think that…I don’t care. I will just keep my money instead of giving it to non-producers and illegals. We will see who loses. The only thing I hate is wasting money….I could care less about skin color. As long as they stay out of my pocketbook.

Clunker my butt, Rick! I have a ’97 Taurus (and bought it new in ’97). It still gets 32 mpg when I drive mainly superhighways to visit out-of-state friends and relatives and get well above 20 mph on average otherwise. I expect to drive it until at least 2012.
If it was a state car, it probably received oil changes on schedule. If the CA Taurus runs well, it’s a steal for $500+!

if Bill Clinton can take a $300 tax deduction for every pair of his drawers, why not this?

he California governor signed the vehicle’s sun visor — and those of about a dozen other state-owned cars — and the state has put it for sale on eBay. Hey — if Sarah Palin sold the Governor’s plane on EBAY — why not? I am a bit curious why Governor Schwarznegger didn’t buy into the “CASH FOR CLUNKERS” program.

You big mean republican terminator! How dare you make me live within my means? And you can’t get rid of the illegals. Who will mow my lawn? – Joe California

Posted by: Open-Mind | August 25, 2009, 6:04 pm 6:04 pm

The problem with California is not just illegal aliens it is the idea that the government can continue to provide hand holding to the entire population without collecting any taxes. The latest problem is that the Republicans refused to consider any tax increase even through it was clearly needed.

I would try a barter system for the IOU’s and sale of items. A barter system gives a value to the system and eliminates debt as it becomes part of the barter system that can be traded.

I thought they were going to legalize pot and tax it. What happened to that common sense endeavor?

Posted by: tom | August 25, 2009, 7:55 pm 7:55 pm

At least he’s trying to do something. He’s trying to save money while Obama is struggling to find new ways to spend money he doesn’t even have.
And who gets criticized?

Fisherman
A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She lowered her
altitude and spotted a man in a trout stream fly fishing below. She
shouted to him, ‘Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would
meet him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I am.’
The man consulted his portable GPS and replied, ‘You’re in a hot air
balloon, approximately 30 feet above a ground elevation of 2346 feet
above sea level. You are at 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and
100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude.’
She rolled her eyes and said, ‘You must be a Republican.’
‘I am,’ replied the fisherman. ‘How did you know?’
‘Well,’ answered the balloonist, ‘ everything you told me is technically
correct, but I have no idea what to do with your information, and I’m
still lost. Frankly, you’ve not been much help to me.’
The man smiled and responded, ‘You must be a Democrat.’
‘I am,’ replied the balloonist. ‘How did you know?’
‘Well,’ said the fly fisherman, ‘you don’t know where you are or where
you are going. You’ve risen to where you are, due to a large quantity of
hot air. You made a promise that you have no idea how to keep, and you
expect me to solve your problem. You’re in exactly the same position you
were in before we met, but, somehow, now it’s my fault.

I don’t see the average Joe doing anything to help the situation with the economy! They should get off the stick/fence/whatever their on and do something for the state instead of bitchin about the Governator! At least he’s coming up with ideas! They may not all be good Ideas but at least he’s doing something!

Vasquez is a strange name for a Native American Indian, the only true natives in California. Everyone else is a transplant at one time or another like I am sure you are.
Arnold has failed to cut programs for the rich and upper middle class instead cutting them for the Seniors and Disabled the hardest those already living below the poverty rate. If he got rid of the programs for the wealthy there would be no budget deficit and no reason to cut programs for the poor.
If he truly wants to help how about putting his Private Jet and Hummers up on the eBay auction to help California.
