The Note: Passion Gap — Are Obama’s Critics More Engaged than His Fans?
By RICK KLEIN So the approval rating hit 50 before unemployment hit 10 — though it may not have won the race by much. In the grand scope of the week — with its Clinton diplomacy, cash-for-clunkers refuel, and 68 votes for soon-to-be-Justice Sonia Sotomayor — this was a pretty good start for August for Team Obama. You might not have gathered all that from the shouting — and therein lies a central problem for the White House and its allies. Two hundred days into the Obama presidency, have the president’s critics grown more passionate than his fans? We already know that they’re louder and angrier. But if this means a genuine passion gap, then a troubled agenda might be set for a wilting summer. (Real grass needs more tending than Astroturf, anyway.) To add to the mix, it’s another Friday jobs day, with fresh Labor Department numbers out at 8:30 am ET likely to show more job losses, though lost at a slower pace. This time, the White House put the full PR apparatus into action on the front end. And President Obama will be speaking on the economy after the numbers are out, at 1:15 pm ET. Yet it will continue to be numbers like these — and how they contribute to perceptions of the economy — that will define the realm of what’s possible for President Obama. Plus — this is a special Friday jobs report: It coincides with the start of a congressional break. “Most presidents can’t wait for Congress to leave town,” Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., tells Bloomberg’s Al Hunt on “Political Capital.” “They own the pulpit” and can “really dominate the news.” As opposed to what’s dominating the news right now . . . “Bitter divisions over reforming America’s health care system exploded Thursday night in Tampa amid cat calls, jeering and shoving at a town hall meeting,” Adam C. Smith reports in the St. Petersburg Times. ” ‘Tyranny! Tyranny! Tyranny!’ dozens of people shouted as U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor struggled to talk about health insurance reforms under consideration in Washington.” “The spectacle at the Children’s Board in Ybor City sounded more like a wrestling cage match than a panel discussion on national policy, and it was just the latest example of a health care meeting disrupted by livid protesters. Similar scenes are likely to be repeated across the country as lawmakers head back to their home districts for the summer recess.” Josh Marshall, at Talking Points Memo: There’s a “general pattern — escalating mayhem and near-riot behavior from teabaggers escalating into physical confrontations. Already, not surprisingly, right wing websites are attempting to blame these developments on pro-health care reform advocates.” (Yes, the right looks bad when it’s yelling and pushing and waving nutty signs. But something real is going on out there. And how many of these sorts of flare-ups need to dominate local news before the vast middle of the country decides it has better things to think about this summer?) Peggy Noonan, in her Wall Street Journal column: Members of Congress’ “shock is the first thing you see in the videos. They had no idea how people were feeling. . . . And frankly they ought to think about backing off. The president should call in his troops and his Congress and announce a rethinking.” RIP, bipartisanship: “Hopes for a bipartisan approach to solving the nation’s ills, a goal President Obama made a core element of his ‘change’ election campaign pitch, have virtually evaporated as party-line feuding and harsh exchanges between political leaders overshadow their earlier efforts to work together,” Susan Milligan writes in The Boston Globe. Could Obama’s supporters match the other side, troop by troop? “While the organizers are as crass as they come, I haven’t seen any evidence that the people disrupting those town halls are Florida-style rent-a-mobs. For the most part, the protesters appear to be genuinely angry,” Paul Krugman writes in his New York Times column. “Right now Mr. Obama’s backers seem to lack all conviction, perhaps because the prosaic reality of his administration isn’t living up to their dreams of transformation. Meanwhile, the angry right is filled with a passionate intensity,” he writes. “And if Mr. Obama can’t recapture some of the passion of 2008, can’t inspire his supporters to stand up and be heard, health care reform may well fail.” Tag-team time? “Top Obama aides promised Senate Democrats that the White House would defend them on health care if opponents attack, part of an organized effort to arm Democrats as they head out of town for the August break,” Laura Meckler reports in The Wall Street Journal. “At a closed-door meeting Thursday with senators, White House senior adviser David Axelrod presented polling data that he said showed the administration’s new message focused on consumer protections was effective, particularly with swing voters.” White House Deputy Chief of Staff Jim Messina: “If you get hit, we will punch back twice as hard.” Helping protect against other punches: “White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel warned liberal groups this week to stop running ads against Democratic members of Congress,” Politico’s Jonathan Martin reports. “The powerful top aide to President Obama made his feelings known at the weekly closed-door strategy session of an array of progressive organizations, according to two sources who were there.”
“I hope that message gets out from the White House because there . . . are more than enough folks on the opposite end trying to fight any kind of reform,” Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., said on ABCNews.com’s “Top Line” Thursday. Helping deliver the punches: “The recent attacks by Republican leaders and their ideological fellow-travelers on the effort to reform the health-care system have been so misleading, so disingenuous, that they could only spring from a cynical effort to gain partisan political advantage,” Steven Pearlstein writes in The Washington Post. “By poisoning the political well, they’ve given up any pretense of being the loyal opposition. They’ve become political terrorists, willing to say or do anything to prevent the country from reaching a consensus on one of its most serious domestic problems.” Responding from the podium: “Nobody is collecting names,” White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told ABC’s Jake Tapper Thursday, on the flag@whitehouse.gov effort that Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, objected strongly to. Maybe a week late on this tutorial: “Democrats spent the past week preparing themselves to use the recess to recapture control of the health care debate, which polls show has been rapidly losing public support. The health care tutorials they received included tips on how to deal with the unruly crowds of protesters that have been popping up at town-hall meetings and other events around the country,” Roll Call’s Emily Pierce writes. Then there’s what was already supposed to be done: “Congressional Democrats said Thursday that they intended to push the Obama administration to back away from its deal with the drug industry to cap its share of the costs in a health care overhaul,” David D. Kirkpatrick writes in The New York Times. On the PhRMA “deal”: “Did the White House get taken? Or did it make a shrewd tactical move? We won’t know the answer to that until we see what — if anything — passes under the title of ‘health reform’ this year,” Time’s Karen Tumulty writes. Ignore the polls — and the noise, says Politics Daily’s Jill Lawrence: “They should keep in mind that scorched-earth town halls are not real life and polls, as we are endlessly reminded, are just snapshots in time. They ought to bury their own anxieties and make it happen.” Maybe some hopeful signs, out of the spin: “Even as the Obama administration braces for another grim report about job losses on Friday, economists say that the president’s $787 billion stimulus package has helped blunt the downturn in limited but discernible ways,” Edmund L. Andrews writes for The New York Times. “While there is a consensus that a fragile recovery is in the offing, the outlook remains murky. Still, analysts say the impact of the stimulus, while small, is discernible.” Not afraid to talk double digits: “The White House is playing a delicate expectations game as it braces for Friday’s release of the nation’s unemployment rate,” Politico’s Eamon Javers reports. “The figure hit 9.5 percent last month and is expected to creep even closer to the symbolic level of 10 percent when the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts out the newest figure at 8:30 a.m. on Friday. That’s why White House press secretary Robert Gibbs was eager to talk about the 10 percent figure during his last press briefing before the new number comes out. By putting the number on the table, the White House can still position the unemployment number as a win in the daily media cycle Friday if it falls short of that.” That’s 68 votes for Sonia Sotomayor (and will any future nominee beat that total, in the foreseeable future?). “Judge Sotomayor’s confirmation was never in much doubt, given Democrats’ numerical advantage in the Senate. But the final vote showed a partisan divide. No Democrat voted against her, while all but 9 of the chamber’s 40 Republicans did so,” Charlie Savage writes in The New York Times. Four of the nine Republicans to vote for Sotomayor are retiring from the Senate, as ABC’s Z. Byron Wolf points out. New era: “When Sonia Sotomayor is sworn in Saturday to the Supreme Court, she’ll be able to claim two firsts: first Hispanic justice and first high court member to have her oath-taking made available to TV cameras,” per the AP’s Julie Hirschfeld Davis. “Sotomayor’s cell phone rang almost immediately. ‘Mommy, I have people here,’ Sotomayor told her – to laughs in the room,” per the New York Daily News’ Robert Gearty and James Gordon Meek. “They spoke briefly in Spanish before hanging up, and the misty-eyed Suprema nueva told her friends, ‘My mother is so happy she’s crying.’ ”
New talking point: “It’s official. The United States is no longer engaged in a ‘war on terrorism.’ Neither is it fighting ‘jihadists’ nor locked in a ‘global war,’ ” the Washington Times’ Jon Ward reports. “President Obama’s top homeland security and counterterrorism official on Thursday declared as unacceptable the terms crafted by the George W. Bush administration. It is now solely a ‘war with al Qaeda’ and its violent extremist allies, said John Brennan, head of the White House homeland security office, during a speech Thursday at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.” Plum post for a plum money man: “Alan D. Solomont, one of the Democratic Party’s most prolific fundraisers and an early supporter of Barack Obama, has been selected by the president to be ambassador to Spain and Andorra, according to a White House official,” Brian C. Mooney reports in The Boston Globe. Welcome back: “Gov. Mark Sanford returned from a two-week European vacation with his family Wednesday, reiterating he would work hard on state issues and restoring trust with S.C. residents,” The State’s John O’Connor reports. “Sanford said the two-week trip was a chance for his family to get away from media coverage and mend their relationships following his June admission of an extramarital affair. Sanford also apologized to South Carolinians in an editorial published across the state last month.” Another welcome back: “Rielle Hunter, John Edwards’ former girlfriend, left the federal courthouse in Raleigh this evening after nine hours with federal investigators,” Mandy Locke writes for the News & Observer. “A federal grand jury is investigating whether Edwards misused campaign funds as hush money for Hunter.”
The Kicker: “Though we have not had the privilege of meeting before, you may know us from our Super Bowl commercial earlier this year featuring MC Hammer and the late, great Ed McMahon.” — Cash4Gold’s president and CEO, in a letter to President Obama and congressional leaders. “Where is Carl from?” — Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., asking the clerk about a colleague, Sen. Carl Levin, who has represented Michigan in the Senate since 1979.

Sen. DeMint: GOP Race Could Go Until Convention
Obama Avoids Questions on Contraception Rule
Did anyone see the CNN poll (200 days) last night? Obamas health care approval was a D and Obama himself got a C-. That was way down from the one they did after the first 100 days. It was funny, the CNN so called experts were shocked and were trying to make all kind of excuses for him. America has woken up.

The proposed health care reform Certainly will help me and my family. The premium will go down, and I will be getting better care. Just because Obama is trying to implement I cannot digest. I don’t want him to get any benefit even though the program is good for me.

Sounds like a bad case of wishful thinking to me! The unemployment figures are 9.4, well below your projection, and the level of support for the president is still strong in my neck of the woods, and I don’t even live in a blue state.
The press loves to tear down the people it has helped to build up. that keeps the 24 hour news cycle flourishing. There are still a wealth of steady, rational Americans who give this young president high marks for all of his efforts on our behalf. Frankly, I just don’t understand why he even wants the thankless job.

This is the best article I have read in a long time. You are so right on point, starting this weekend I will be talking to my neighbors and supporters of the president about attending Town Halls. Virginians have been good about not disrupting meetings but we’ll be ready if they start.
Thank you for reminding us that we have a voice too.

Suprisingly fair and insightful article. Hats off to ABC News. I think there are a couple of things here. One is the idea that Obama and the liberals felt they could just ram this through based on popularity polls. Those polls were just lagging over from the Inauguration spike and were not good indicators. Secondly, in regards to nationalizing health insurance I think to talk about radical change is one thing, but when it comes time to act the populace breaks down into three groups. One group is still avidly in favor of the proposal. One group is solidly opposed and begins to stir, and the third group are those who originally vaguely support the proposal but contract cold feet once the proposal reaches the table. Anyways, nice article on a topic which needs to approached evenly.

This is truly sad. Americans have become ignorant and refuse to read and listen to MANY sources to obtain correct information. I am sickened on the ultra rights who are doing dirty tricks to try to get the issue of health care off the table. What happened to being cordial. These town halls are there to listen and answer questions…yet, for some, they think screaming and hollering and such is going to work. Shame on us. There are so many misinformation out there …fear factors..which has been going on for 8 years by the Republicans and it continues. Yikes. Truly sad…esp during these difficult times.

The town hall protests are real and the grass roots anger at the oppressive and costly Health Legislation is legitimate. This most definitely is not some kind of Vast Right Wing Conspiracy. I get the feeling much of America is fed up with overbearing governmental attempts to monitor and control every aspect of our lives. This has the feel of a real revolution. Grab a tea bag and join us. You’ll not only save the best health care system in the world, you’ll also save your liberty and your freedoms.

Does the Note edit comments to support a certain point of view, or is there some kind of technical glitch? Just curious.
I think its ironic the people who would benefit the most from healthcare reform are the ones protesting it. Personally, I have health insurance, I rarely go to the doctor and my self-employed brother covers his family through Maine Care. Maybe that’s why I’m less “passionate” in supporting reform than those who are opposed.

According to Rasmussen Report daily tracking poll, 34% of US voters strongly approve of the job Obama is doing and 38% strongly disapprove of his job performance. This gives Obama a -4% in the Presidential Approval Index. 71% of voters say Obama’s policies have increased the deficit. The remaining 29% are illiterate. 72% of people do not believe Obama can keep his promise of reforming healthcare without raising taxes. The remaining 28% still believe in the tooth fairy.

I dont understand how our government can spend all this money it doesnt have. I thought bush was bad but obama doubled the defecit in 100 days! And now with the healthcare reform it will triple it. Not to mention i dont see how we can have healthcare reform without tort reform, The constant defensive practices are what makes healthcare soo expensive in America, yet since we are run by lawyers we dont want to fix the primary problem because it would make lawyers go broke. Also forcing small businesses to pay for healthcare would be disasterous, How can a pizzashop afford to give employees healthcare? Healthcare reform is necessary but given the current circumstances, we just cant afford it. It would be best in my opinion to pass regulation that would ban insurance companies from punishing people with certain preexisting conditions, and also passing tort reforming. Other than that, there are many health options out there that people can buy they are just being lazy and dont want to pay for it. Socilized medicine only punishes the working class and rewards the lazy and incompetent.

At a town hall meeting in South Carolina Obama is quoted as still blaming Bush, “You hand me a $1.3 trillion bill, and then you’re complaining six months later because we haven’t paid it all back.” Obama hands the American taxpayers $14.8 trillion in debt. in his first 6 months. Sounds like the pot calling the kettle black. Only this pot is spending the American people generations of debt.

American Patriot, My opinion isnt swayed by anyone. I look at the facts, I pay for other people’s medicare that is in my taxes. The idea that this government program isnt going to be payed for by the average american is a JOKE! This program was supposed to cover all those who dont have insurance but 1 trillion dollars later and it only covers 1/3rd of the uninsured. The idea of a government plan is nice especially for those who dont have insurance but WE DONT HAVE THE MONEY! were BROKE. The defecit has been doubled since obama took office and the value of the dollar just keeps falling. We are in DEEP trouble if the healthcare bill passes, especially if you look at the defecits in social security and medicare. National insurance would mirror these 2 programs.

There are no winners in healthcare at this point. This whole dance is only broadcasting to the insurance companies that we are more than willing to pay whatever they want to charge, and we will do it because we as a nation are scared if we do it any otherway, we will become socialist.
Everyone better get ready for new increases we insured pay to have health care, because I have a funny feeling far more will be taken out of your paychecks so we can feel better that we are free from a trynical government.
Americans pretty much shot themselve in the foot on this one, and no doctor or insurance company will help up us until pay for our lack of faith in their market power.

There is no fan gap in my house. We are pleased with the difficult job President Obama has been doing. Today, with the drop in unemployment, will he get credit from his critics…NO. This is the first time any new incoming president has faced such challenges in30 years. This is also the first time any new president has been met with such negativity from the opposing party from day one. Without giving him a chance, many have criticized him and hoped he failed Limbaugh and friends). What does that tell you? This president will not fail. Instead of condemning him, give him some suggestions as you say you know better. All I hear is condemnation, now answers from the opposing party. Keep smiling President Obama…you are doing a great job.

Adam, and so what would you suggest doing? What’s left of the GOP has hijacked this process and set up the predictable devil’s bargain: if cost-controls are included, they scream rationing and “government is going to tell you when to die.” If cost-controls aren’t included, the predictable response is: “look at the deficit.” So, while we spend what it would have taken to solve healthcare on a foolish war in Iraq, we do nothing about healthcare. And by the way, I’m not arguing for doing something because of the uninsured. I’m arguing for doing something because the system is badly broken. As far as the insulting goes, I was engaging in a bit of satiric hyperbole responding to the tough guy comments.

Amy, you said you are not as passionate about health reform as those who are against it?? Is it possible that a leopard has changed her spots? Just yesterday, you accused me of bein a liar simply because I stated that I’d like for our government to be open and honest about health reform. That I’d like the congress (and president) to actually READ the bill they are about to pass. That, if the reform bill is so wonderful, let it see the light of day, and do not pass the bill behind closed doors. And then you came back at me saying that I am spreading lies about Genocide? I think your words referred to euthenasia for the elderly (which IS genocide). You told me that i should stop making things up (interesting that you would quote Palin). And now you claim a more moderate voice??? Come on! All of your attacks on me (and others that oppose closed door legislation) is hardly ‘less passionate’ than my statement about wanting to allow the American citizens see the bill before it is passed.

As for socialized medicine…what a joke. For those who say the government can’t handle health care…l. they will not be handling it. Second the government handles social security and medicare/medicade and ask those people who receive it if they want it banished as some people at these so called unorganized people are crying for. Three..you can keep your own health insurance if you want it. How many times can this be said? One wonders if it is not the policies that people are objecting to but the color of the person representing them.

Sorry you lost what little credibility you had when you come on line and drop your hints at violence against anyone who would attend a town hall meeting and voice an opinion against health care reform. I for one will voice my opinion about it at any given chance. I have that right. I am not being told by ANYONE what to say or what to believe. I’m old enough and mature enough to make up my own mind. I have fought for this country and lost loved ones for this country. I like to believe that what i have done is honorable and for the continuation of an OPEN and HONEST government. That seems to be the problem with the current administration: If his reform bill is so great, simply SHOW IT TO US before it is made into law

Senator Wyden – $1.2 million
Senator Nelson – $1 million
Senator Landrieu – $1.3 million
Senator Specter – $4 million
Senator Feinstein – $1.4 million
Senator Baucus – $3 million

Obama is imploding and Americans are waking up. I find it ironic that Obama literally enforced town hall meetings and freedom of speech, but now, that there is a extreme growing opposition to his health care reform, he wants to squelch the true feelings of America and have their names sent to him via email. Obama is a “has” been and will be a one term president. 2012 can’t come soon enough to get him out of office.

I’m embarrassed that I ever voted for Obama. He is taking away the rights of all Americans with his socialist agenda. We have a town hall meeting on Aug 25th, I will be there. It’s ironic, many, many Democrats are going to be there to voice out opinions against the lies Obama has tried to force down our throats. Even Claire MaGaskill (Obama supporter) stated this morning that the opposition to the health care from Americans should be heard and considered by lawmakers. The Blue Dog Dems are against Obama and you will continue to see this opposition grow and swell. Obama truly is an “empty suit with no substance!”

“Maria,” since you hate the so-called “socialist” agenda, will you kindly write to Medicare today and tell them that you will be refusing ALL Medicare for you and your immediate family? And will you please stop driving on our interstate highways? Since you don’t appreciate the benefits my tax dollars are providing you in these “socialist” programs, I’d thank you for opting out. At least be consistent.

The Republicans destroyed our country and what did our smart country do? Find the least qualified guy to fix things. Don’t forget the large group of Americans who have given up on the Government and on our country to a certain degree. Some of us feel like we are already living in idiocracy. I could care less about health insurance. If Obama had really cared about it, he wouldn’t have waited so long to do something about it. It was last on his list.

Health care approval? My husband works for an insurance corporation that handles different insurance companies. Guess what that Insurance corporation did back in April and May. That Insurance corporation which manages different insurance companies sent out a memo to all it’s paid employees and sub-contractors. Yep it told them to protest and fight the Health Care Reform for the up coming months of July and August. They also had a list for employees to sign in if they chose to protest. But since my husband did not sign up to protest, I guess that is why he got the pay cut.

To prevent communists, and socialist from coming here from the ussr ( SOVIET SOCIALIST REPUBLIC) and taking control of our country. I grew up during the coldwar years with fears and weekly air raid drills! Now it seems I served for nothing!socialist are here ,we served a loosing battle! The more you media people try to say people are thugs who are voicing there opinion the more it will backfire. The critics are engaged all right. They are delusional and just spew hate. They don’t even understand the health care reform bill, since they come up with the most ridiculous claims that it will contain a clause that sets up elderly people for euthanisia. How ludicrous. They listen to Faux News too much, and Limbpig too, for all their “knowledge” of health care. Forget about anything positive that that the Obama administration accomplished this week: two U.S. citizens freed from North Korea, senior Al Queda official in Pakistan is dead, job loss percentage is going down, Market is going up, Cash for Clunkers is a success and has bee extended, and we have a new Justice on the Supreme Court. None of this matters to the “passionate” haters out there. They want Obama to fail and will pick on the most vulnerable Achilles heel they can find. They think its health care so they are getting all worked up about this. We still support him and we can get worked up too. Don’t push it!

Eugenics, anyone?
“Services that promote the continuation of the polity-those that ensure healthy future generations, ensure development of practical reasoning
skills, and ensure full and active participation by citizens in public deliberations-are to be socially guaranteed as basic. Conversely, services provided to individuals
who are irreversibly prevented from being or becoming participating citizens are not basic and
should not be guaranteed. An obvious example is not guaranteeing health services to patients with dementia. A less obvious example Is is guaranteeing neuropsychological services to ensure children with learning disabilities
can read and learn to reason.” Ezekial Emanual, Obama’s Health Czar, wrote in a Hastings Center article.

“Cash for Clunkers” is a success??? Please explain “success”. You mean that those of us who pay taxes get to subsidize other folks so they can get new cars? Or the fact that we are spending 4500 dollars to “earn” 1200 dollars in tax revenues? Oh….maybe you mean that we are stimulating the economy by having Americans buy American Cars? Ooops…80% of the new cars that we are subsidizing are FOREIGN vehicles…..but, yeah, it’s a success all right

Well, after the White House telling Dems to punch back twice as hard as those protesting the fact many Congressfolks and Senators will not read the bill has gotten their wish. It appears that a conservative was beaten by members of the SEIU along with a journalist of the Saint Louis Post-Dispatch, why because he dared to question the President and Democrats on the health care bill.
Remember, this is what hope and change looks like. If you question the left, the President will ask for his followers to report you and you will be beaten. Hope and change folks, hope and change. I’m sure many on the left are proud!

Angie,
You fail to see how this will hurt the auto business long-term. Remember the whole ‘Employee Pricing’ thing? At the time, you had people taken out of their normal trade cycle…which meant that the customers who would have been in the market a year or two down the road were no longer there…so your ‘normal’ customers were not in the market…which is one of the factors that hurt the business. Now, they are doing the same thing again…and not only that, but they are destroying cars that could be used by those who could not afford a ‘new’ car. They could have been donated to families that have lost everything, including their cars, to help get them back on their feet (look for jobs, etc)…but the gov’t thinks it is best for the motors to be locked-up. Personally, I think it will hurt in the long-run…but that’s just based on my experience in the car business…but hey, the gov’t knows better than everyone else, right? Don’t believe me? Look at the sales numbers during and after the employee pricing programs.

Of course Obama’s critics are most engaged – a defining characteristic of modern conservatism is anger. Conservatives are more passionate when they are indignant (“I’m getting screwed!”) than they ever are about anything positive. This was a core component of the GOP’s Southern Strategy and the party has never given it up since then.

From what I see, the people who are demonstrating at the town hall meetings are doint it because they are afraid. They have been made afraid by the right wing liberals who send e-mails with mis-information, incorrect data, and garbage to these people who do not know what is really the case. They believe what they are told by their party and most of their friends. No one wants to take their health care away from them as suggested. The president only wants you to have a choice or an opportunity to get better care. YOU CAN KEEP YOUR COVERAGE IF YOU LIKE IT…THAT IS A FACT. Don’t believe anyone who says otherwise. No one will raise your taxes if you earn under 250,000, and probably that is what most of you earn. Without health care reform, we will go broke and that is a fact and even the republicans know this. We are ranked 37th in the world on health care and have the most expensive progams with nothing to show for it. Life expectancy is only ranked at 50%. These are the facts and all the other countries cannot understand why we do not have some form of health care for all. We will not have the same kind of care as Canada although a survey was made and most Canadians are heppy with their health care. No one will decide which older person will die as some speculate. One need to look into things more thoroughly and give the Congress/Senate and the President the time to get it right. It is too important to screw up. When people go to town hall meetings, it is to learn things. When you shout them down, you and they are not learning anything. If you are that afraid..do some research, keep an open mind and stop reading the junk that is sent through your e-mails. I get them, too.

It is okay if ACORN buses in mobs at voting polls, or memebers of the black panther party intimidate voters or if votes are collected from tombstones…
that is okay. But if angry people show up at town hall meetings to protest their elected reps position, then they are mean angry “right wingers” and this is started by right wing groups. Oh yeah…part of that “vast right wing conspiracy”…okayyyyyy……

How are the numbers that describe the country’s feelings about Obama or health care reform determined? It seems to me that Obama is a courageous man because he doesn’t back off even with all the attacks he gets. Health care reform is a moral imperative that needs to be formed based on these conditions:
1. Covers everyone, so that no person relies on an emergency room for their health care or delays treatment because they lack insurance;
2. Provides quality coverage that is truly affordable to all families regardless of income;
3. Protects and enhances the health of lower-income families and children by strengthening Medicaid and SCHIP; and
4. Rests on a financially sustainable foundation.
It’s not easy. None of the issues Obama has concerned himself with have been. He doesn’t give up though even though he gets hit with criticism every day.
He still has my respect and support and I think he can handle his job just fine.

Angie, the argument of blaming President Bush no longer applies. Our deficit now belongs to Obama. He does not understand the numbers. Why do you think the Democrats are turning against him? Congress is for the people and BY the people. The Democrats have constituents they have to rely on to remain in office. Right now, America is “disenchanted” with Obama and you see that in his nosediving numbers. Obama is not good for America and WE the People are speaking out. Its not Republicans setting these people up at the town hall meetings. This is the “grassroots”, people that Obama thought he could “brainwash”. The Democrats realize that if they agree with Obama, then there will be a shift in the 2010 congressional seats back to the GOP…thats why they are refutiating Obama and his policies. Again, Obama will be a “one-term” president…his numbers are the worse ever, even worse than those of Jimmy Carter. Please, do you research and think rationally before you post.

“Those in the sidelines of this GOP hysteria … make sure you vote in local and federal elections. Fight back at the polls. Vote out another round of Republicans in 2010 and 2012 as we did in 2006 and 2008.”
I’ve been a lifelong Republican and I’ll tell you this much, I’m not voting for anybody unless there is somebody worthy of my vote. Right now there is nobody. This would be the first time since I was old enough to vote that I didn’t but I’m tired of holding my nose and voting for the guy who stinks less. Give me somebody I can vote for, not some cowboy wanna be like Bush, or some left wing Republican who just wants to LOOK conservative like McCain and definitely not some Chicago street thug who thinks effective governance means using the media, union thugs and internet snitch sites to shame, intimidate and betray fellow citizens into submission. Until then I’m out!

Bottom line: the Republican healthcare plan is the alternative to the Democrats’ attempt at healthcare reform. What’s that plan, you say? Easy. It’s the healthcare reform plan Congress passed during the 12 years the Republican Party controlled Congress and the six years it controlled all three branches of government:
[nothing]
That’s right, folks. That’s their healthcare reform package. Nothing. Excuse me if I don’t include their pharmaceutical industry giveaway that masqueraded as Medicare drug assistance. Other than that phony plan that ordered government agencies to pay whatever price the drug companies chose to charge…nothing.

To go to a town hall meeting and not listen means you have a closed mind. You need to listen, compare facts and then make your decision. Otherwise you are a mob sent only to disrupt the meeting and not to learn. Hannity was falling all over himself the other day about these meetings. This is sad because the purpose of them is to educate. The republicans can say they are not orchastrated but that is a lie. Listen to Russ, Hannity and Beck and you will see othewise. If you are afraid…then listen and learn and then make up your mind. No One wants to take your health care away…only to give you a choice and possible get you better coverage for less. I have watched my daughter deal with the insurance company and her cancer and that was awful. She should not have had to do this while fighting cancer. All I ask is that you listen and learn. If we do not get a health care reform…we will go broke and that is a fact. Then, you really will not have health care unless you are one of the over 250,00 people who will be able to afford it. Hospitals will close. And, by the way, if your are listening to Rick Scott…his company was fined 1.7 billion dollars for cheating medicare. Keep an open mind people and get ALL of the facts.

Do Democrats want “Socialism”?
Socialism means ownership of business by government. Democrats don’t want to own it. We just want to regulate it. We tried business without regulation twice in the last century. It got us the Great Depression and now the worst recession since that.
But help me out.
Republicans seem to want ownership of government by business.
What do you call that?”

Iknow 50 percent approval rating is horrible lol haha, so your saying President Obama alone has spent trillons of dollars in 200 days? and Bush and the Republicans had no part of that? please people are smarter then that!

The other advanced countries–all democracies–have everything ranging from heavily regulated private systems to mostly socialized ones. All of them are far cheaper than our system; all of them have better health outcomes than our system. And not one of those countries’ electorates have ever shown the slightest interest in adopting our system.
Guess why? They don’t want to die while some for-profit insurance company denies your request for a new kidney, hoping that if they slow-foot your claim you will in fact die before they’re forced to honor it.

It is UNCONSTITUTIONAL to force the American People & Businesses to buy something that ONLY the Govnm’t thinks is Good, as well as to FINE them if they don’t conform. This is NOT Choice, NOT Freedom, and NOT Justice. This is Anarchy at its’ Best!!!

the Republicans/conservatives say most Americans are happy with their current healthcare.
I say wait ’till you or a loved one gets really sick. After all, if you ran a health insurance company, and your only goal was profit, what would you do when a customer got really, really sick?
You’d get rid of him, using your army of bureaucrats whose main job is to find excuses for recission–that’s cutting off someone’s insurance by saying you didn’t dot an “i” somewhere on your application.
That’s why I call these companies the “Healthcare denial industry.” Very few people who’ve actually had catastrophic illness are happy with their healthcare insurance. And even those who say they’re happy may not have noticed how their healthcare premiums have doubled in the last few years, because it’s why you didn’t get a raise–it’s often hidden in your overall compensation.
Posted by: ehkzu | August 7, 2009, 12:22 pm 12:22 pm
The healthcare denial industry has grown to swallow up 1/6 of the entire American economy, gutting our competitiveness on the world market, through keeping things exactly as they are. Without healthcare reform the current system will take up 1/3 of the entire economy in a few years.

The media has been so biased for or against Obama, however, I see in these town hall meetings, with accessibility to information, that Americans are taking a stand. Don’t underestimate Americans….we can think on our own. This is hogwash that the Republicans or Fox News is behind this. Give Americans some credit. We do NOT want what Obama is offering and the Republicans are not doing any better. The problem is, is that Obama can’t stand it when he is challenged….well, Mr. Obama, America is challenging you and YOU are losing! Keep it up, Americans, fight Obama’s socialist agenda! Lets take America back! We dont’ need a president that goes oversees and puts us (Americans) down. Obama is not for us, he’s for himself. 2012 can’t come soon enough to get Obama out of office! Go to the town hall meetings, voice your opposition……”America, land of the free!”

The Republicans want their rank and file to think Democrats are their enemy; that we want to turn America into some alien place they won’t recognize.
And they want Democrats to treat Republican rank and file as their enemy, so we’ll never realize we both have the same enemy:
the bloodsucking billionaires who pull the strings in the shadows. They’re practising divide and conquer. And they’re very, very good at it.
So remember who the real enemy is.

Medicare MMA – The Pill Bill. Passed in 2003 by republicans. Projected ten year cost? 534 Billion. Congress did nothing to “pay” for this bill. Said bill is also “socialist” or a massive expansion of entitlement if we go by republican rules. Yet the people slept thru this and now they fuss.

I left that part out just to bait you into another gaffe. Look it up and look at their districts. And the best part of all??? Look at the political contributions from the insurance companies to the senators and congresspeople: I’ll make it easier for you. Specifically look up the contributions to Reid, Pelosi, Dodd. Angie in PA you really need to wake up. The Cash for Clunkers is not a great program. For years we will be paying money back for people being given $4000 for a car. The cars that used to be there for teenage kids or for those trying to get back on their feet will no longer be there because those cars will be sitting in a junk yard being destroyed for the steele. The number of people that once donated cars to charity will drop because they will also try for their $4000. The steele that is currently being taken from the cars involved in the Cash for Clunkers program will shortly be sold to china, the largest buyer of US scrap steele. Hope and change, folks, this is what hope and change looks like

The public option is just an option. Why shouldn’t ordinary Americans who do not have health insurance or cannot afford private health insurance or would like to have a choice, have a public option?
For your information, most civilized and advanced nations have universal health care programs and they are fine.
Actually, the Republican opposition is for the benefit of the insurance and pharmaceutical companies and not for the ordinary Americans. They do not care about the ordinary Americans.

The point of my comment about obama taking the hit for the economy IF you insist that Bush take the hit for 9/11 stands. You say the economy was tanking before Obama took office? The plans for 9/11 were made long before Bush took office. And as far as the economy tanking, do you not recall that your hero was a US Senator for 2 years prior to be elected? And as your friend wants to point out (if her understand economics) …the congress controls the purse strings. The economy started tanking ONLY AFTER the democrats took control

No, Angie, you are wrong. Bush did NOT ever want to cut medicare spending. You are flat out lying now. What Bush DID do was to propose a SMALLER increase on the spending. There is a huge difference between cutting funding and cutting the increase to that funding. But that is something that democrats have never been able to understand. The Dems wanted 20% increase in medicare and medicaid (don’t forget that was the big part of it). Bush said he wanted 15% increase instead of 20%. It was still an increase, not a cut.

Fed Up, here is the link: Ezekiel Emanuel wrote an article for The Hastings Center Report in 1996, in whoch he proposed that health care services should not be guaranteed for “individuals who are irreversibly prevented from being or becoming participating citizens.” He continues, “An obvious example is not guaranteeing health services to patients with dementia.”[5]
In 2009, he wrote another article on the same topic, “Principles for allocation of scarce medical interventions” in the Lancet Journal.
Google the “Principles for allocation of scarce medical interventions” and you can read his words, verbatim. And if that doesn’t send a chill up your spine then you are heartless. Maybe I feel this way because I am rapidly approaching “elderly”

“Bush did NOT ever want to cut medicare spending. You are flat out lying now. What Bush DID do was to propose a SMALLER increase on the spending” – When the increase in spending does not match inflation then its a cut. Right?
As far as Bush and Social Security goes…it was his plan to privatize SS through the stock market. Imagine being a senior citizen and trying to live off a 401(k) the way they are now? Anti-reformers are currently trying to scare seniors with BS about euthanansia. I know some Republicans are good folks, but there seems to be a fringe that is intent on hurting old people. Why?

It has been so long since I have had a President that I could admire, I almost have forgotten the feeling! Imagine my joy when Obama/Clintons teamed up to free the two American journalists from North Korea. It is so nice to have the smart, hard-working folks back in charge! By the way, President Obama will get his health care reform bill this coming Fall!

Mark, you will never hear me, nor most of the GOP saying that Obama favors euthanasia…..what your handlers have done is to take our concern about marginalizing seniors by denying them medical procedures, and have turned that around to say that we are claiming that you guys want euthanasia. So parroting that line about scare tactics is just wrong…..we are not claiming that your guy wants to kill off old people….that line is a typical Obama diversion

I love this Statement…”Old people are getting Free Insurance thru Medicare” Yes the SAME Old People who paid into that System for Years so they would have it in Retirement. Unlike the #’s of Poor, Indigent, or Illegals (Over 1/2 of the Dem Votes) who are receiving Free Entitlements(Like Free Medicaid & Welfare) without having to pay into the System all because they can’t figure out how to Get a Job or Quit having Illegitimate Children. Now I see the Problem….Old People are cutting into THEIR FREE MONEY!!! “Keep Your Hands off of My Stack while I use all Yours Up” is the Democratic Way.

nc – Food for thought. We are a bit out of control at “the end.” We will bring a person back from their heart stopping when they might have two weeks before the cancer kills them. We do seem to operate that we now keep somebody alive “no matter what.” Forget quality, etc. Naturally I would not use this argument for “mental” or dementia. But at what point do we get that we’re a tad on overkill? This question has been around for some time.
Actually I could save them boatloads of money. The whole birthing process is just OUT OF CONTROL and too costly. Heck, now they schedule C Sections for convenience. That’s ridiculous. Birthing is one of the largest chunks in this fight.

The “quid pro quo” and blasting of the North Korean visit is absolutely absurd, yet totally expected from the same people who blindly created the “axis of evil” and blundered into misadventures abroad and at home.
The blasting of Judge Sotomayor, who was nominated for a prior post by one of their own party stalwarts is embarrassing and counterproductive.

FedUp, perhaps there is some over reaching…but that should be the individuals decision, not the government’s. And i’m not talking about extending life artificially. Emanual talks about, for instance, a hip replacement surgery. My mom, for instance. She is suffering from first stage Alzheimers. I have had to place her in an assisted living facility (that I am paying for…not the government). Her hip is bad, and will be replaced because it is causing her great pain. I elect to spend the money to do that. If Emanual has his way, the government will say that she has no chance of returning to a “participating citizen” status ever again…..and will deny the hip replacement. THAT IS WHAT I HEARD EMANUAL SAY, almost word for word. And the spirit of that statement is in his article. And he is the brother of Ralph Emanual, and he, himself, is the chief advisor to the policy making of the the health care reform act.

Despite the best efforts from the right to bring on failure and perpetuate the lunacy of conservative ideology, our elected President is doing a remarkable job. It is easy to forget that only 6 months ago it was a very real possibility that the US and the world would slide into a second Great Depression. Democrats and the president have steered us away from the cliff. It is hard to forget that the United States was RESPECTED around the world, not feared as a danger to world peace and stability. It was a drak time when nations like China could correctly point at the US and call us abusers of human rights. President Obama has done a great job in dealing with the aftermath of a decade of conservative party rule, and starting on the path of righting the ship of state after 30 years of reaganism. There is so much yet to do, but at least we are moving forward instead of accellerating backwards like we were from 2001-2008.

“what your handlers have done is to take our concern about marginalizing seniors by denying them medical procedures” – I am not a Dem so I am not sure what “handlers” you refer to. As far as denial of care based on age that goes on every day in the medical community. I worked for ten years in the field and it happens all the time from organ transplant lists to advanced experimental procedures. Admittedly, what is far more frequent is denial of care based on income, which reform addresses. As far as screaming “euthanasia”, please reread my post. I concur that most Republicans are not using that tactic (nor racism and mob mentality), but I ask you – what is it about the Republicans that attracts those kind of people? Think about the culture the party is engendering. Get your party act together because you cant keep embracing and then distancing yourself as the political winds blow. Get some backbone and caste out your loony fringe.

Five stars on the progress report for President Obama as he stepped aside and called on two able people, former rivals, to work for the common good.
The President, both Clintons, and the North Koreans joined to release the captives despite past hurts and bruised egos.
The release of the jailed journalists by North Korea offers a valuable lesson to the beleaguered Republicans now busy fighting against an able Supreme Court nominee and hampering progress on needed health care reform .

Yet, 8 months later people are having “HISSY FITS”, that the ‘Train Wreck’ , called the US Economy is not up and running. A lot of people in the Country are suffering from “SELECTIVE AMNESIA”, they tend to forget what really happen in the past 8 years.

America spent 30 Million in Medicaid on Illegals in 2007. This Current Admin tends to think that Adding ALL Illegals onto an Overburden system is helping the matters & is Reform. Also even though the Poor already have Free Health Care by being Indigent, they’re the 2nd on the List to be enrolled in this Proposed Health Program, while everyone else has to wait yrs to get in…..IF you qualify!!! The Middle Class ALWAYS has to Qualify and the Poor(and now Illegals) are ALWAYS Automatic. This isn’t Reform …it’s appeasing One group for Votes.

BTW, the government [military, NIH, etc] collects data and provides research standards that civilian medicine uses.

A possible alternative solution.
The Kassebaum-Kennedy Bill, passed in 1996 after lengthy and acrimonious debate, included a narrowly limited four-year pilot program authorizing medical savings accounts. A medical savings account enables individuals to deposit tax-free funds in an account usable only for medical expense, provided they have a high-deductible insurance policy that limits the maximum out-of-pocket expense. As noted earlier, it eliminates third-party payment except for major medical expenses and is thus a movement very much in the right direction. By extending tax exemption to all medical expenses whether paid by the employer or not, it eliminates the present bias in favor of employer-provided medical care. That too is a move in the right direction. However, the extension of tax exemption increases the bias in favor of medical care compared to other household expenditures. This effect would tend to increase the implicit government subsidy for medical care, which would be a step in the wrong direction.
Before this pilot project, a number of large companies (e.g., Quaker Oats, Forbes, Golden Rule Insurance Company) had offered their employees the choice of a medical savings account instead of the usual low-deductible employer-provided insurance policy. In each case, the employer purchased a high-deductible major medical insurance policy for the employee and deposited a stated sum, generally about half of the deductible, in a medical savings account for the employee. That sum could be used by the employee for medical care. Any part not used during the year was the property of the employee and had to be included in taxable income. Despite the loss of the tax exemption, this alternative has generally been very popular with both employers and employees. It has reduced costs for the employer and empowered the employee, eliminating much third-party payment.
Medical savings accounts offer one way to resolve the growing financial and administrative problems of Medicare and Medicaid. It seems clear from private experience that a program along these lines would be less expensive and bureaucratic than the current system and more satisfactory to the participants. In effect, it would be a way to voucherize Medicare and Medicaid. It would enable participants to spend their own money on themselves for routine medical care and medical problems, rather than having to go through HMOs and insurance companies, while at the same time providing protection against medical catastrophes.
A more radical reform would, first, end both Medicare and Medicaid, at least for new entrants, and replace them by providing every family in the United States with catastrophic insurance (i.e., a major medical policy with a high deductible). Second, it would end tax exemption of employer-provided medical care. And, third, it would remove the restrictive regulations that are now imposed on medical insurance—hard to justify with universal catastrophic insurance.
This reform would solve the problem of the currently medically uninsured, eliminate most of the bureaucratic structure, free medical practitioners from an increasingly heavy burden of paperwork and regulation, and lead many employers and employees to convert employer-provided medical care into a higher cash wage. The taxpayer would save money because total government costs would plummet. The family would be relieved of one of its major concerns—the possibility of being impoverished by a major medical catastrophe—and most could readily finance the remaining medical costs. Families would once again have an incentive to monitor the providers of medical care and to establish the kind of personal relations with them that were once customary. The demonstrated efficiency of private enterprise would have a chance to improve the quality and lower the cost of medical care. The first question asked of a patient entering a hospital might once again become “What’s wrong?” not “What’s your insurance?”

Obama’s critics have nothing to say, It’s all a lot of racist acting out over having their time in history permanently pass, and Obama’s supporters (that is, normal sane people) aren’t going to waste our energy answering the irrational. Obama isn’t going to lose much more support among the people who get swayed by every breeze and he’ll get them back in 2 years when it counts, if he doesn’t already look wildly successful by then…

Geg,
I have been a Republican and a conservative all of my adult life, and while am considering dropping out of the party, my conservative values remain as strong as ever. Your statement above shows very clearly that you don’t know what you’re talking about. I am not now and never have been wealthy. There have been many times in my life when I did not have health insurance. Most recently until about two months ago I had been without it for about two years. You don’t know me so how could you possibly know what opportunities I have or have not had? But you’re so caught up in your leftist stereotyping that you can’t possibly believe that anybody who is not rich would not want the government insinuating itself further and further into their lives. You see a freebie from the government, I see shackles applied to its people.
Remember these words of Benjamin Franklin, “When the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.”
That is what I fear.

i think that a lot of these screamers are people that have not had the opportunity to hear both sides of the story. they have been poisoned by the big insurance companies political tv ads, newspaper articles and paid media commentators, who are spewing fear and anxiety for anyone gullible enough to believe it. big insurance companies are terrified that they may be forced to charge a reasonable price for their services. they have been gouging the american people for to long. people will go bankrupt to save their child or loved one because most big insurance companies will drop their coverage if it is some kind of insidious and expensive disease. this is wrong and should be changed. it is the big insurance companies that is to blame. we would not be in this mess if they would have not been so greedy. they know people will pay any amount of money to save thir child or loved one.

Obama and team are starting to unravel at the seams – it’s only a matter of time until many of the Democrats part way with the newly elected.
Many of our Democrats are on the verge of making the biggest decision of their lifetime. Do they want to sink or swim?

Heckling? Jeering? They sound like mobs, vigilantes, rioters, peasants with torches…You can’t REASON with people who have no REASON. How sad – all the shrieking going on by these extremists, whipped into a frenzy by lies and distortions. The right wing who encourages this type of behavior are unconscionable. You can’t win elections, so you stoop to the lowest common denominator – stir up the rabble. You may kill reform, guys, but you’re also killing civil discourse. It’s gonna come back to haunt you if this is YOUR idea of free speech; the mob just might turn on YOU someday.

The insurance special interest are very effective at confusing people so they fight AGAINST what is good for them.
The fact is that we in the US are the only industrialized nation that doesn’t offer universal healthcare.
When you combine what we pay in private premiums combined with taxes, it is currently higher than Canadians, but they get better care. If we get sick our insurance overlords will try everything not to cover us, since it threatens profits – but if a Canadian gets sick they get treated because people recognize it as a human right.
Health care and profit motive do not mix – medical treatment should be a human service not a business.

Cram – Just remember those “polls” are based on SAMPLES of voters (usually a 1,000 people or fewer), not ALL eligible and/or registered voters in the entire United States. So have fun with your little numbers, but don’t think you can celebrate the failure you yearn for so much YET. The President still has over 3 more YEARS before you can do squat, or you can wait until 2010 to punish your Congressional reps. Otherwise, let’s just wait and see what MULTIPLE polls say the night before the election in 2012, maybe then they might mean something. Meanwhile, hope you don’t chase those numbers daily – you’ll give yourself a heart attack. As for me, I’ll keep believing this country can do better – I’ll take the “tooth fairy” over negativity ANY DAY.

Obama’s Fans are not HOLIGANS or THUGS that shout down others in a public discussion forum. ABC news, if you call this “LUNACY” stuff passion, then the united states is in trouble and I hope you will keep calling it passion when all hell will be let loose. We proud ourselves of being the model for democracy but instead we are acting like vandals and holigans and ABC News calls that Passion. I wonder. I just wonder ….

Current US health care system = the most EXPENSIVE, RATIONED (yes, it is ALREADY rationed) health care system run by insurance companies in the world.
We’re talking about a government OPTION. No, you CANNOT be turned down for a pre-existing condition the way the insurance companies do. No, small business will not be required for provide it, and no, it won’t kill your granny. 46 million uninsured Americans need an option.
NO, Bubbler, this isn’t grass roots organizing – it’s a MOB whipped into a frenzy by fear mongering. No tea for me – I don’t want anything to do with uninformed, irrational, uncivilized lunacy.

Polls are taken with only 1000-6000 participants out of over 300 million citizens.
Eventually, the violence and viciousness of the GOP activists will be seen for what it is. Americans are not so stupid not to catch on. Those of us who respect the President will fight for his policies (the unions are entering the frey over health care at these town halls) with reason and determination; we shall wait for the rest of America to wake up to the hate and racism spewed out by his detractors.

Question: How many of commentators have actually looked at the bill let alone read it?? I get the feeling not many. I do not agree with government run health care but I can say with knowledge that States need to enact laws the force companies to created an UNINSURABLE FUND as with it is with Auto Insurance with premiums set by State law AS IT IT WITH AUTO INSURANCE. That Would solve the problem and allow the State to cover Medicaid Recipients with commercial insurance and make it available to those lacking the ability to pay with subsidized premiums

About the only thing Obama had in his resume as a presidential candidate was a gift for rhetoric. Chicago had such a high murder rate that the state considered sending in the national guard. Personally, given the state of the U.S. at the time, I truly believe Daffy Duck would have won if he were a candidate. Then, despite his LOFTY moralistic phrases, he nominates THREE tax cheats in a row–two withdraw after the media lamely criticize the big O…and Geithner slipped through. Disgusting and unbelievably hypocritical. Now he puts the SCREWS on Israel–and yet woos the Arabs. I haven’t heard a SINGLE VEHEMENT CONDEMNATION of the Hamas Charter that calls for “the Destruction of Israel.” What if it were “The Destruction of France…or Spain…or Belgium?” He seems poised to allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons…a nut-job totalitarian regime fuelled by Islamic fanaticism and glorification of martyrom. I consider Obama the BIGGEST threat on the world stage today to Western security–he ignores reality, as his gift is for motivational speaking. He has probably already left our great-grandkids in debt. He is seen as weak by America’s enemies and I fear it is just a matter of time before we awake to news of an Islamist radiological bomb having been detonated. Maybe he should start by INSISTING that Saudi Arabia, an exporter of terror, allow the humble Bible to be carried into its country. His attempt to appease Islam will backfire–Islam=Theocracy, he cannot remake it. Where is John Bolton when we need him???

The opposition is louder because they’re willing to make decisions before gathering evidence. They hate Obama because they hate him…this makes it easy for them, because they don’t have to wonder what to complain about. Most of the critics just complain about everything he says and does, and that’s why they’re so vocal.

I can’t stand that health care reform crap, why do I have to pay for health care for the majority of blacks that don’t want to work and will never work in their lives. I’m black myself but food stamps and section A is already available, add free health care to that and you have a society that is entirely dependent on the Govt and will never have to work again. Please mr. president deliver us from mediocrity.

From these out of control individuals who show up in groups at these legally organized town hall meetings, they want to continue paying high premiums, and will pay any price for their current health care costs. Let the public health care reform pass, and let’s see what they do then. Will they come a runnin’ and beggin’ to get on board or will they swallow their pride and go down with their own chaotic ship of despair. The woman screaming into the ear of a representation was obviously angry but she showed no respect, no civility, and she needed to take a chill pill before arriving. If she had acted this way in most work places, she would have been dismissed immediately until further notice. This style of behavior is criminally bent and possibly terroristic to take over a planned town hall meeting just to get their way. So, let them have their high priced health care pacifier, and let’s see what happens next to them while those who really need health care will actually be able to have good care, cut down ER costs, and possibly have an impact to lower our health insurance costs in the process. The ultimate goal is to provide better health care at lower costs for all of us regardless if we accept public or private insurance. That’s a real reason for change in health care reform. Also, getting to actually decide health care choices with primary physicians without price fixing will be a major plus to pocket books for individuals and businesses. Lastly, prevention and wellness programs will actually benefit overall wellness of American lifestyles. Temper tamtrums do get attention and sometimes not in the best ways. Have you ever heard a screaming child in a store who is having a temper tamtrum. It makes you feel sorry for the parent and the child, but aren’t we glad when the screaming child is taken out of the building. When those who have gotten all their temper tamtrums out, then begin to behave in rational behaviors in order to actually be heard, voice opinions through warranted claims, have reasons with facts and backup for claims to validate reasons for opposing views. Learning to collaborate is difficult for many since most people like to polarize instead of come together to work together in rational and civil behaviors. Working together to get difficult policies discussed and appease more than none is the ultimate goal. Just opposing to oppose isn’t legitimate arguments, it’s just not. Lincoln/Douglas debates disprove that logic. Adults, behave as adults not 2, 3, 4 or 6 year olds who have unresolved frustration. All of these angry people at these town hall meetings are displaying unresolved frustrations in not getting their way. In these situations, their behaviors show displaced anger. It is something else masked. Until displaced anger is revealed, displays of displaced anger will continue on and on and on. First, take deep breaths, think responsibly, and assign spokespersons who will deliver logical facts that either support or oppose views. It appears these groups of people missed out on speech and debate in their educational process. Shouting is childish, hitting is 2 year old development issue, pushing is abusive, and threats are terroristic. Learn how to debate logically and responsibly in reasonable and lawful manners. Be responsible adults not 2 year olds out of control.

The Dems will be very surprised in 2010 if they don’t take any of the protesters seriously. The mood of the country started when Rick Santelli spoke his mind on CNBC. But it has gotten worse because the Dems have not explained the healthcare bill, have not listened to people who do not want the public option for fear of a govt takeover, and because the stimulus and climate bills were pushed through without anyone reading it. The days of ‘trust me’ are over and no one trusts Congress as you have seen from the polls and trusting Obama is becoming very difficult for many as he pushes the deficit higher. So by ignoring the protesters and marginalizing their voice, the Dems endanger their future. By playing to the far left they are just as bad as the Republicans playing to their far right. Vote them out in 2010 and Obama in 2012.

Here is the whole problem with the Healthcare proposal that Obama and the democrats are failing to address. If the government is in the healthcare business that would mean private healthcare would be forced to lower its rates. Good you say? The problem is like many other businesses forced to lower their prices – healthcare would be forced to fire and lay off many or most of its employees to stay in business. That means not only massive increases in unemployment under our already buckling from stress economy but also reduced quality of service from both the private and public sector of healthcare. No one will get good healthcare if this plan were to pass and the pandora’s box of unemployment, companies closing down, not to mention the expansion of government and government offices (which in turn will need money and create environments ripe for corruption and cronyism) and going out of business in turn affecting the stock market globally is just not worth the experimentation.
Posted by: guesswhaturwrong | August 9, 2009, 1:41 am 1:41 am
The drop in unemployment is simply attrition (the companies have laid off to a point where they are now nearly all running on skeleton crews and 4 day work weeks). The fact is while they may not be firing and laying off as much (last month) they ARENT HIRING PEOPLE BACK!!!
Dont forget its summer hours and a lot of people went on vacations in July and employers simply dont fire as much when the regulars are on vacation.
You may see a slight increase in hiring around October (for the Christmas season) and then more massive layoffs and firings beginning after Dec 24, 2009.
Posted by: guesswhaturwrong | August 9, 2009, 1:47 am 1:47 am
Tell me this: The Democrats say “you can keep your healthcare plan if you like what you have already” – however how will you keep this plan when the company providing your current coverage suddenly goes under, goes bankrupt, or out of business (after laying off 75% of its employees of course) because they will not be able to compete price-wise with a supposedly cheaper government program? In the long run if you analyze the plan piece by piece you will see there is a great deal of risk and hazard to not only the healthcare and medical industry but to the U.S. economy’s stability as well as even Wall Street and the global stock market.

Does the president and the leftist congress want to have a redo of the 60′s. Great, we can see the true face of the lefts peace and love BS that only seem to apply to those they agree.
Thugs beat up an African American man at a protest last week handing out ‘don’t tread on me’ flags and not a mention on any news media except one.
The left are the THUGS and are throwing gas on the fire. They are disgusting. Who will they deem unworthy of next. HIPPOCRATES ALL. Guess they haven’t used enough people this year yet.
This is insane and the far left have lost their collective minds.
Police, CIA, seniors as ‘mobs’, they are making friends fast in DC.
It’s down right Orwellian and of the leftists OWN making.
When the administration attacks others as a defense is disturbing and WRONG. They seem clueless as well. Attacking opponents during a campaign is NOT the same as when you have the white house, senate, and house of representative. It reeks of elitism, snobbery, and bulling.

Private, for-profit insurance companies = rationed care. For-profit drug companies = rationed care.
I am not lazy or incompetent. I’ve worked full-time making a good living since I graduated from high school. I also have a chronic, incurable medical condition and I am one exacerbation away from losing my excellent, employer-paid health insurance coverage.
Single-payer health care is going to happen eventually. I hope it’s in time that my young nieces and nephews don’t have to worry about losing everything they have because they got sick the way I worry about it every single day.

I can’t figure it out. For example: The Postal Service is broken beyond repair. If the gov’t can’t fix it, why do we think the gov’t can run health care which is more difficult and complex? Our public education system is broken beyond repair. The gov’t has tried to fix it for the past 40 yrs, both Dems & Repubs, but can’t do anything except throw more money at it.
I don’t believe the gov’t can run any national program and make it run better or reduce it’s cost.

Imagine how many more perscription-drug addicts there will be when hardcore pill addicts fill up hospitals and doctors offices because they arent afraid of having to pay the doctors or hospital bill to get their oxycontins and percocets. If Obama really wants his healthcare passed he should seriously consider legalization and government distribution of these hard drugs (and let marijuana be sold at liquor stores and coffee houses like alcohol and cigarettes). Perscription drug addicts and what they will do are another unseen problem and unmentioned consequnce to Obama’s health care plan.

I love the adjectives the liberal media (redundant, I know) use to describe people who are tired of the Obama lies and distortion when it comes to the need for a “bailout” spending bill and the reformation of our health care system. Note that they don’t fault the thinking people for being so passionate about reclaiming some sensibility in governance. If we’re not passionate about something so incredibly important we might just as well cede to the socialist’s budding movement. Never.

Freedom of Speech has never been at the expensive of another citzen’s right to it. Democrats remember, plan adequate security for these Town Meetings. Give the Security Team instructions to give any disruptive individuals a warning when their behavior becomes disruptive. Then to remove the disruptive influence the next time it happens. It’s one thing to have a free flow of ideas and information, but yet another to allow peaceful citzens to be bullied by people that I would refer to as Nazi’s. Remember that Hitler was jailed in 1924 and 1929 for what started out as the very same behavior that got carried too far.

Remember the 60s? Love fest, Make Love, Not War, Protests in the streets, Woodstock, STDs, Herpes introduced by Hippies of the 60s, Love Children, Rampant drug use of LSD (acid), Speed (Meth), Weed (Marijuana), Heroine (Opiates), and uncivilized unrest — well welcome to town hall meetings of these individuals who are against health care reform. These individuals were out of control in the 60s and they are totally out of control in these town hall meetings. These are individuals who laughed at Debate Teams and well mannered students and families. They and their offspring are at these events trying again to place upon American citizens the burden of their uncivilized unrest through rebellious tactics against well mannered individuals. They (hippies) brought out the worst of change in the 60s and are again trying to bring out the worst in others. They are the ones who introduced disrespect towards others who aren’t one of them. Well, do you want to be an out of control over aged hippie from the drugged cultured 60s? Please give these out of control individuals their drugs back — they are having extreme withdrawals. And those of us who are well mannered and believe in civil discourse, stand tall, be firm, and stand for what is right for America. Side Note: Palin came from one of the western states that had massive marijuana harvest in the 60s and 70s. Possibly don’t know, but maybe she is a product of Love Fest 60s. 2nd side note: These hippies Love Fest individuals are the ones who spit on our soldiers who returned from a battered war. So, Vietnam soldiers, if you want to know who hated you, look at the town hall meetings and your are looking at those who spit on you, made fun of you, and hated you. We well mannered and civilized citizens cared for you, rooted for you, sent home made packages to you, and welcomed you home with open arms with apprciation for your sacrifice. Again, look at these out of control angry individuals and they are the ones who persecuted you, not us. In conclusion, who has the right message — out of control hippies from the 60s or those who talk and listen to each other’s opinions and decide together and collaborate together for best practices and outcomes. Again — out of control hippies of the 60s or civil discourse?

Bottom line… do ANY of these “reform” bills actually reform? or do they simply provide insurance to the uninsured? I don’t think I should pay for the medical care of the chronic welfare recipients and as far as I know, this bill only insures those who are still living with this socially engineered lifestyle that created parasites who live off other’s hard work. This not actually “reform”.

Hey, RO, sounds as though you were writing about Barky and his ObamAcorns. All we did was pull a page from his playbook back in the day when he was a “community organizer”. “Get in their faces, shout, yell”. Remember that? Here is the facts. All you could ever hope to get from the government is a conveluded tax scheme that works like an HMO to ration your care resulting your death from denial from needed services when you are sick. For this service they will tax you excessively due to illegals defrauding the system and fine when you cannot afford it. Wake up cool aid drinkers!

I don’t care how many people are enamored with Obama’s packaging… if unemployment and taxes rise, while choosing to waste more money on “pet wars” and personal agendas in Iraq,Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, then even Obama will not be reelected absent another “Diebold” election scam that got Bush a second term. Maybe that’s why Obama doesn’t care… Perhaps he’s already “guaranteed” a second term, just like the last bum, Bush the II. Remember when we had two OPPOSING parties, instead of a co-opt one party system that grows deficts on the taxpayers while acting on the basis of rule by force (government) rather than rule by CONSENT (republic). But I guess this “President” (read “corporate lackey”) is just another gofer for the prilvedged class (SURPRISE!)and tax’es the rest of us to pay for their lavish lifestyle and largesse. The following reality check may be necessary: The first, the statement ” millions of green jobs will be generated after passing the cap and trade bill”, the fact is: most manufacturing jobs will go oversea, not in United States. Secondly, they said ” the current health care cost is skyrocketing and out of control. Only the new health care reform can save money and reduce cost in the future”, the fact is : the new health care change will cost one trillion dollars more than the current cost in ten years and cutting the medicare spending will be necessary to fund this reform.

I listened to all three debates before the election and liked everything Obama said. However, he has done a complete turnabout and most of what he said in the debates now appears to have been lies. His health reform plan stinks, and is definitely designed to eliminate the sick, disabled and elderly. He is spending obscene amounts of money and at this rate this country may never get out of debt. Bush was bad for this country, but I’m afraid Obama is worse than Bush, far worse. God help us all. I won’t be voting for Obama for a second term if things keep going the way they are or get worse.

Where were all of these hate and fear mongers the last eight years as Bush @ Co. destroyed this country? What do you think had to happen in order to fix the destruction made by the last eight years. President Obama did not do the harm, he is trying to fix a very, very bad problem. Instead of listening to the people whose sole purpose is to destroy our country while making themselves rich, open your mind and actually listen. What idiots to be talked into making an ass out of themselves at meetings that are being held solely to try and inform you.
This country is in real trouble of years of idiots and crooks filling their own pockets and weak minded people not being able to see past their hate and fears to see what really has happened and what needs to happen to fix this.

How dumb are some Americans. Obama told these dummies BEFORE the election that if you had coverage and were happy with it then his plan would not effect you. THIS PLAN IS FOR THE UNINSURED AMERICANS. What should THE UNISURED do-roll over and DIE!! THE REPUBLICANS HAVE SENT ‘JOE THE PLUMMER” TO THESE MEETINGS TO DISRUPT THEM! WHY ??Because they don’t care about the uninsured and because Republicans don’t want their healthcare stocks to go down. The know the healthcare industry is a “cash cow” for them. This is not about Obama, this is aboutTHE RICH REPUBLICANS MAKING MONEY-PERIOD.
