‘This Week’ Exclusives: Newt Gingrich and Howard Dean

Our headliners this week – two leading voices in the debate over health care reform:  former House speaker Newt Gingrich and former DNC Chairman Howard Dean.

As the Senate heads off on its summer recess health care reform will continue to dominate the political agenda at the White House and across the country.  Already, members  returning to their home districts have been greeted by raucous crowds attending health care town halls.   The debate over health care has become heated and unexpectedly emotional.  That heat will no doubt be present on Sunday when our headliners Newt Gingrich and Howard Dean join me to debate the various proposals for health care reform.

We also have a great Roundtable this week. Richard Haass, President of the Council on Foreign Relations, Peggy Noonan, Cokie Roberts, Sam Donaldson, Matthew Dowd will debate the week’s politics. In addition to that town hall tumult, we'll focus on Bill Clinton's mission to North Korea.  What does it mean for US policy and for the former President?

You won’t want to miss our conversation Sunday- exclusively on “This Week.” See you on Sunday morning.

Why is Newt involved in anything?

Posted by: leogorky | August 7, 2009, 2:23 pm 2:23 pm

I would just like everyone who watches to pay attention to how Gingrich and Dean handle themselves on this show. I know you will see the difference, just asking those of you watching to observe. This is a glimpse of how the
crowds are behaving at the local forums. No ugliness intended, just an observation.

Why do you think Dean has anything to contribute? I know he is a MD, but I also know he is a fool. He a master at hate and bad mouthing everyone else. The Democrats don’t even like him. You would think you could have made a better choice than Dean blind folded. How about this anyone on the planet, even the loser Pelosi or reid.
Why Newt would even appear with this joker is beyond me. You should have Obama on but he would never accept, Newt would eat him up. Obama is long on blah blah short on facts.
George I will not watch your show – I like you but your asking a lot when put Dean on.

Newt’s on ThisWeek? Switch the channel to Meet the Press. Newt is a complete joke and begs to go on these Sunday morning shows to try and seem relevant. See you in a couple of weeks.

Why is Newt involved in anything?
Posted by: leogorky | Aug 7, 2009 2:23:18 PM
He is involved because he is 4 times smarter than Obama and he loves his country and the Constitution unlike “The One”

Thanks George for having Dean Howard on. I totally support his movement and hope he can answer all of the misinformation that is going on. And I like your choice of commentators afterward. Hopefully they can be role models for how ppl can disagree while respecting others’ opinions, something we have lost here on this blog.

At least Dean, unlike Gingrich, didn’t have to resign in disgrace…..I think Shirley missed the point completely. Dean as an MD should be able to field questions about medical care a lot better than ANYONE from the Party of NO.

Time to GROW UP!!
Personal attack comments?? How about a debate of the fundamental issues?
Dean and Gingrich are both serious thinkers and should be listened to.

Gingrich is a legend is his own mind.
When are you going to do a show about the growth of the New People’s Army in the Philippines? I nominate Brian Ross to cover this. They are now in 6 of 7 provinces and preparing the ground for Mainland China to just walk in. The media is asleep on this issue.

Posted by: Bill | August 8, 2009, 7:51 am 7:51 am

Mr Stephanopolis could you ask dean if he could promiase the people that the congress and senators family also will enroll in the public plan and why not?And please dont say we have a choice.

Posted by: joyce | August 8, 2009, 11:43 am 11:43 am

Dean is a moron – there is only one question, is the medical plan as good as the one congress has and if it is not, why do they think they deserve a better policy than my mom and dad?
You will get no answer to this question, congress is loaded with self serving crooks with Pelosi leading the pack.

Dean is toast!

For George Stephanopoulos: How about addressing some hard questions of Howard Dean? How about asking about Pres. Obama’s pledge not to tax anyone earning less than $250K? The House version of Mr. Obama’s health-care—or rather, “health-insurance”—reform already has four taxes that will largely be paid by people making less than $250,000 a year. If some version of ObamaCare is passed, the president will break his tax pledge several more times while adding trillions to the deficit, dismantling the best elements of our health-care system and slashing Medicare by hundreds of billions of dollars. There’s $8.2 billion in taxes for using health savings accounts and other tax-free medical savings vehicles to purchase over-the-counter drugs. There’s an 8% tax on employers who don’t offer insurance: The Congressional Budget Office says workers in those businesses would pay the $163 billion cost via lost wages. There’s a 2.5% “Tax on Individuals Without Acceptable Health Care Coverage” in the House bill that applies to people who either don’t have insurance or whose policies the government deems inadequate. Finally, there’s a $2 billion “Comparative Effectiveness Research Tax” on all private and “public option” insurance policies.

I would really like George to ask the 2 guests and everyone on the panel how much their health insurance costs this year (total) and how much they pay themselves. Then ask them approximately how much these 2 figure were 10 years ago. These are questions that should also be asked of the objectors at the recent Town Hall Mtgs.

Posted by: Carolyn Priest | August 9, 2009, 12:17 am 12:17 am

Neither of the upcoming guests alarm me. They have careers to maintain. What worries me are the masses of uneducated and unthinking Americans who can garble the issues and be led astray by politics or news media or the lobbyists. They cannot independently think for themselves. That is the scariest issue of all….especially as these lambs being led to slaughter, can actually VOTE. That is why nothing ever seems to change in this country. Few politicians care about YOU, and even fewer lobbyists care about YOU.
Help me urge George to separate the hype from the honesty. Help us George, help us please!

Watching the show it will be interesting if Congress pads their wallets by giving themselves better benefits than the general public. Joe public needs to rely on either reading the document that is being proposed or find a reliable source for the information regarding the same. Palins web site is not one of them. Talk about a pawn for the Republic Party. Lets face it Medicare and Medicade are a flop and they do dictate the service you get. Public is use to getting hammered by the Congress yet they keep voting the idiots in.

George,
How could you give Gingrich, a has-been, who has nothing effectively ! to add/do with the present situation, give that guy a platform????
What on earth can he possibly contribute to the current theme at hand?
all you are doing, is putting him into the public eye just once more and that aafter more than a decade.

Just a short comment on today’s program. Sam Donaldson was hypercritical of the American’s attending the town hall meetings and vocalizing their discent with the president’s proposed reform…but did anyone notice how Mr. Donaldson expressed himself r/e the discent as he became agitated– trying to shout down his fellow panel members this morning?? Just something to consider…Was this a man being passionate about his opinion– or should his opinions be ignored/discredited as the rantings of a crazy old man??? Lose the double standard…Yours truly a registered Democrat…

Why is it that we American’s are the first to send our resources to assist people that are in need all over the world, yet we won’t take care of the people in America that most need our help? We neglect our neighbor’s that need basic healthcare, but seeing American’s (most of which are our Christian right that are supposed to believe the message that was given “So in everything, do to others as you would have them do to you.[Matthew 7:12.] Watching people screaming at the top of their lungs like selfish children that it will take away from them, that the poor, the people living in poverty, middle class folks like our family are going to take away from “them”. To think that my neighbor’s would not give a second thought to the people in their communities that are doing without basic health care is appalling. What is even worse is that these same American’s listen to a drug addict named Rush Limbaugh is even scarier! That the same addict that took advantage of the health care system, would have any right to speak on the matter in the first place is crazy, and that my neighbor’s are pushed into frenzy in front the world showing their absolute lack of compassion is a embarrassing and a shame. Just because of lack of money or resources, no human being in need should ever be denied health care. Period.
Quote from general principles of human rights
It is easy to see interdependence of rights in the context of poverty. For
people living in poverty, their health may be the only asset on which they
can draw for the exercise of other economic and social rights, such as
the right to work or the right to education. Physical health and mental
health enable adults to work and children to learn, whereas ill health is a
liability to the individuals themselves and to those who must care for them.
Conversely, individuals’ right to health cannot be realized without realizing their other rights, the violations of which are at the root of poverty, such as the rights to work, food, housing and education, and the principle of non-discrimination.

Consider this. The U.S. military is routinely ranked as the most respected institution in America. The same flag waving patriots that love America’s biggest government organization, the department of defense, are terrified of national health care. How can a government capable of running one first-rate organization be so inept at running a second?

The Roundtable never seems to address the issue of the fact that the main worry most taxpaying American have about the “Public Option” is that no one has defined “Public” which perhaps includes millions of uninsured illegal aliens. This will just be a new incentive for people to flow across our border illegally for jobs, free education and free healthcare.

Cokie Roberts showed her ignorance, and bias, when she said teh Bush V Gore Supreme Court decision was 5-4. It was 9-7 showing how correct it was.

While stupidity and ignorance is a condition of the mind, thus, subject to toleration, hatred, a destruction of the soul, must never to be sanctioned, nor, allowed to prevail.
Though these are my words, the thought of them could not have been invoked, were it not a re-discovering, of the inspirational words and thoughts of Martin Luther King Jr., and one quote in particular. And that is this;
Like an unchecked cancer, hate corrodes the personality and eats away its vital unity. Hate destroys a man’s sense of values and his objectivity. It causes him to describe the beautiful as ugly and the ugly as beautiful, and to confuse the true with the false and the false with the true.

I trust George, period.
Gingrich talks about “some” in Congress being in favor of euthanasia. But the important question is, IS IT IN THE BILL?
The simple answer is NO.
They can support whatever they like, but that doesn’t mean it’s going through Congress. They can support men wearing women’s panties, but that doesn’t mean it will become a law.
And yes, the dissent is “organized.” These people begin by being uncertain, and escalate when they start receiving dozens of viral emails telling them all of these fictitious things are in the bill.
Find something that is in real need of fixing in the bill and address it. Be productive instead of destructive

The discussion by Gingrich and Dean was the beat I have heard. But why do you insist on keeping Sam Donaldson on. He is outdated and shallow. And Cynthia Tucker completely disqualified herself last week with her biased opinions on the Gates affair. I will not watch if she is on again

I was at one of these healthcare town-hall meetings the other day, once the group of 80-plus-year-old ladies (standing next to me) had become winded from screaming out “no socialized medicine” and could scream no longer, I heard an older Republican gentlemen (his “I hate Nazi’s” sign, gave him away) talking about how his dog, had just crapped in his favorite shoes. This older gentlemen, then, proceeds to tell how he’s sure, that his dog had been planning this crap attack for at least a week. Next, he states that he had been noticing, over the past 5 or 6 days, that his dog had been studying his movements, patterns, and habits, and is absolutely convinces, (just for cover) his dog crapped in his favorite shoes, a day before the dog knew, he was going to wear them.
What’s going on? Surely, most people are not this stupid or paranoid. Fueled by an organized ignorance, the principal factor at play, can only be explained, as a un-American hatred, for the President of these United States.

As usual, George sits there clueless and unchallenging while Newt lies and distorts. Maybe you ought to do some research when you are going to be moderating a debate? I would have thought you would have learned something after your awful performance in the Obama Clinton debate. The story is not that Newt defended Palin’s outrageous and irresponsible comments. The story is that you let it sail by like a sub 200 hitter watching a fat fast ball hanging over the middle of the plate. Not to worry though, I’m sure your corporate masters were pleased.

The health care bill is being approached from the wrong angle. It is not the insurance angle which should be addressed but the cost of health care itself. 1.Start with the frivolous lawsuits- NOT the legitimate ones. Have a valid way to arbitrate cases without the ridiculous lawyer fees and too high judgements and lower the malpractic suits and ridiculous insurance doctors and hospitals must pay. Stop making it so profitable to sue, to the detrimanet of all of us.
2. Address the costs of drugs- Other counties do it. If it’s not reasonable, buy somewhere else. Set up a drug purchasing network that is competetive for national healthcare, so we can afford our medications.
And, Folks,I predict Newt will be our President one day, like it or not. He is a logical choice among few choices. He has the facts and he actually knows what’s going on(!).

“Find something that is in real need of fixing in the bill and address it. Be productive instead of destructive.”
OK, after you answer these I’ll give you some more. But in truth there are about a thousand or more pages that need fixing or scrapped.
* Sec. 401.59B, Pg. 167, Lines 18-23 – ANY individual who does not have acceptable care, according to government, will be taxed 2.5% of income.
* Sec. 59B, Pg. 170, Line 1 – Any NONRESIDENT alien is exempt from individual taxes. (Americans will pay for their health care.)
* Sec. 431, Pg. 195, Lines 1-3 – Officers and employees of HC Administration (government) will have access to ALL Americans’ financial and personal records.
* Sec. 441, Pg. 203, Lines 14-15 – “The tax imposed under this section shall not be treated as tax.” Yes, it says that.
* Sec. 1121, Pg. 239, Lines 14-24 – The government will limit and reduce physician services for Medicaid. Seniors, low income and poor are the ones affected.
* Sec. 1121, Pg. 241, Lines 6-8 – Doctors, it does not matter what specialty you have; you’ll all be paid the same. “Service categories established under this paragraph shall apply without regard to the specialty of the physician furnishing the service.”
* Sec. 1122, Pg. 253, Lines 10-23 – The government “validates work relative value units” (sets value of doctor’s time), professional judgment, methods etc. (defining the value of humans).
* Sec. 1131, Pg. 265 – Government mandates and controls productivity for private HC industries. “Incorporating Productivity Improvements into Market Basket Updates that Do Not Already Incorporate Such Improvements.”
* Sec. 1141, Pg. 268 – The government regulates rental and purchase of power-driven wheelchairs.
* Sec. 1145, Pg. 272 – Treatment of certain cancer hospitals: Cancer patients and their treatment are open to rationing!
* Sec. 1151, Pg. 280 – The government will penalize hospitals for what government deems preventable re-admissions (incentives for hospital to not treat and release).
* Sec. 1151, Pg. 298, Lines 9-11 – Doctors, treat a patient during initial admission that results in a readmission and the government will penalize you for that action.

It’s funny how people think they know what motivates us, and attempt to marginalize us.
I suggest that you who do so haven’t a clue. We are a freedom loving pweople that have been snookered by government (both parties) too many times.
A government big enough to provide everything you want is big enough to take all you have!
By the way, my health plan is only 137 pages, but then it doesn’t have all those government control caveats on every line.

how can you have a debate if people won’t keep quiet, by the way Medicare, Medicaid and the VA are all run by the , surprise, government. I am a legal immigrant now a citizen whose entire family lives from North to South England and are very happy with their healthcare, they are amazed when I tell them you can lose your home or be in debt from health care. I had a bone scan and was told if I paid cash it would be $80 when I told them I had Medicare the bill was $240 and I had to pay $19.55 what a racket.Years ago I had an unexpected C-section and a 31/2 pound baby who spent three months in an incubator in intensive care, the cost zero, this was in England, the care was great.

I am concerned that my family may not be US citizens, my first born over there was before Hawaii was a State, the other two have the same kind of birth certificate that the President has, does this mean my kids and eight grandkids and all my ex-inlaws who were born there are not all citizens, there must be millions in Hoholulu alone that must be illegal, what are we going to do, I am sure the republicans have all the answers after all they did so well in the last eight years. It is amazing after a do nothing eight years that now they have all the answers

Many of you people have accused some Obama supporters for drinking from the lemonade fountain…I say those who are believing things like someone is going to say which old person will die and that your health care will be taken away, are drinking from the fountain of lies of Limbaugh and hannity. They have a way of twisting words to mean totally opposite to what the plans really are. I have heard them over and over. Now, for Palin….no one wants to hurt her child….no one wants to even talk about her child….she keeps bringing him up to arouse sympathy. She made her choice and most of us support her and no one has mentioned her son in months and months but her. Why does she feel it necessary to bring him into things. There are no plans to take anything away from him, in fact President Obama passed A HEALTH CARE BILL STRICTLY FOR CHILDREN so what the heck is he talking about? If she wants to be involved in politics let, her but she should leave her children out of it and at home where they can have a solid upbringing…not dragging them all over the country. When you involve your children…it opens a door you don’t want open. Most respectable politicans leave their children home and out of the public eye. If Palin wants legitimacy, she needs to rely on her intelligence not the sympathy she gets constantly referring to them or bringing them into her conversation. No one wishes her ill and we all hope her children are well and happy.

We already have several government health care programs and they are expensive and don’t work very well. Why can’t we fix these programs first? Social Security, Medicade, Medicare, VA, etc. etc. etc.
Merge them together into a single health care organization and cut the fat. This would be better and cheap than ALL the current plans.
If you get injured and can’t work – good luck in getting SSI. You will have to get a lawer and if your get any funds the lawer will take most of it. The system we have is corrupt, broken and run by morons – why would I support giving them more money to waste or believe any promise they make?
The idea that you have to rape medicade to fund a “new” program is just stupid to start with.
Taking money from employer sponsored healthcare to pay for healthcare? What the heck is that all about – and how stupid can you get? Better to offer employers an incentive to provide care then give them incentives not to provide care. Has everyone in Congress completely lost their mind?
Yes, we do have the resourses for national health care, but we are wasting billions on the programs that we have already that don’t work. Fix them!
If you liberals where really serious about healthcare you would be focused on fixing the system. Fact is you really don’t care – you just want to spend lots of other peoples money.
Fix what we have. Then let’s talk.

Where is the real discussion and debate on health care issues? The right wing Republicans should be ashamed of themselves! My 84 year old father is convinced that the government wants to kill old people. He is convinced that he will loose his health insurance. I can not convince him that these are only scar tactics of the extreme right of the Republican Party. He is needlessly anguished and upset about all this. This is unfair to him and all the elderly. They are just being used as pawns in a sleazy poliltical battle. What we all need to hear are the facts about the health care bill with a civil discussion/debate. Where is the civility in the civil discourse in this country anymore?

I’m willing to bet that Howard Dean and Obama have not looked at the 1100 page document that they profess to advocate, in fact, I think most doctors and healthcare professionals will have to hire lawyers and extra staff to interpret the 1100 page convoluted document so they don’t get sued for malpractice or break any laws the document contains. This will drive up healthcare costs even more !!!
So, what Obama is saying is that we won’t get healthcare rationed, we wont pay higher premiums or taxes, and they will cover 47 million more people. Wow, what a plan !!! Too bad that’s not true. Getting government out of the healthcare business is good enough reform for me.
