At the UN, a Scolding from the President
President Obama's address to the United Nations today was unusually blunt.
Mr. Obama told his speechwriters he wanted to convey a certain tone both because he needs the international community to work effectively and because he feels he has credibility as someone who has reversed policies unpopular with the international community.
At times the president sounded almost fed-up with the international organization.
"This body has often become a forum for sowing discord instead of forging common ground," he said. "A venue for playing politics and exploiting grievances rather than solving problems."
But as he rattled off the list of Bush Administration policies he has reversed — enhanced interrogation techniques widely considered torture, the war in Iraq, the detainee center at Guantanamo Bay — Mr. Obama was trying to convey the idea that there was a new sheriff in town.
"Every nation must know: America will live its values and we will lead by example," Mr. Obama said.
President Obama believes in international organizations; he has embraced the international community, whether the issue is climate change or global economic recovery.
But he has also privately — and publicly — expressed frustrations with the ineffectiveness of such bodies, the constant run of summits where little of consequences is resolved.
It is far more typical for an American President to praise the UN.
"The vision of the UN Charter, to spare succeeding generations this scourge of war, remains real," President Ronald Reagan said in 1985. "It still stirs our soul and warms our hearts."
But today President Obama told allies and enemies that world skepticism and distrust of America has been a convenient cop-out.
"This has fed an almost reflexive anti-Americanism, which too often has served as an excuse for our collective inaction," he said.
Mr. Obama said it was time for America's critics to step up to the plate.
"We have sought, in word and deed, a new era of engagement with the world," he saidm. "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges."
Ironically, the last president who spoke so scoldingly to the UN was the very president whose legacy Obama was bragging about undoing- George W Bush, who in 2002 pushed the UN to take action against Saddam Hussein's Iraq.
"Will the United Nations serve the purpose of its founding, or will it be irrelevant," Bush asked.
President Obama seemed to express similar frustration.
"If the governments of Iran and North Korea choose to ignore international standards…then they must be held accountable," he said, adding that if the world fails to act to curb nuclear proliferation "we will invite nuclear arms races in every region, and the prospect of wars and acts of terror on a scale that we can hardly imagine."

Obama Avoids Questions on Contraception Rule
What does he expect from an organization that lets a guy like Qadafi whine about wars and has holocaust deniers make speeches? (Apparently, blowing up planes is OK…)

He can’t really be so naive as to think the international community really ever gave a rat’s a** about Gitmo? And that, in their unbounded admiration for him for closing it, gratefully take their “share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges”?
LOOOOOL!!!!! He’s been reading too many Department of Education lesson plans or viewing too many NEA sponsored works of art or something.

I am very certain that no one at the UN took Obama seriously today, so his scolding went in one ear and out the other. He made some incredibly stupid statements like, “No one nation can or should try to dominate another nation.” It is obvious that one nation can and has dominated another nation, even if we all agree that they shouldn’t. He also said, “In an era when our destiny is shared, power is no longer a zero-sum game.” I don’t think anyone, especially say, Russia and Georgia would agree on what their shared destiny should be. Does he seriously think that we in the U.S. have the same destiny as China, or India, or even Britain? These are just a couple examples of the naivete he displayed today, and he has just destroyed our foreign policy and will be hard pressed to restore our standing in the world. What a sad pathetic speech.

Like the Telegraph, which predicted that Obama would receive ovations as opposed to the stony silence received by Bush because, among other things,
he is the first American president who has made an art form out of apologizing for the United States, because he engages the likes of Ahmadinejad and Chavez.
There are more than 100 members of the UN who are designated as partly free or not free by Freedom House. And they don’t give a rat’s a** about Gitmo, either.

Like changing from global warming to climate change?
Posted by: Foghorn Leghorn | September 23, 2009, 11:08 pm 11:08 pm
I agree with Obama that often it seems international bodies such as the United Nations do little more than admit that there are problems that need addressing, talk about them but don’t actually do anything concrete to solve them. This can be seen in the United Nations Environment Program which merely outlines and recommends policies that should be undertaken to prevent further damage to the environment but has no method of enforcing them.
And whilst there is a similarity between the way Obama addressed this issue to the way Bush addressed Iraq, the subject content is completely different. Bush was convincing his audience that action needed to be taken in the form of war. Obama was convincing his audience that action needs to be taken, that it is necessary to come up with solutions and become proactive.

Anne Bayefsky:
“This speech ought to send shockwaves through not only the United States but among our European allies,” concludes Bayefsky. “They are now fully apprised that they have the weakest president in modern times ensconced in Washington, a man who will run away from saying what has to be said, if it doesn’t appeal to an audience with so many demagogues.”
The speech was so embarrassingly bad that only the very dimmest of the goofballs step forward– sort of–to defend it.

Since the election, though, that fervor has died down — noticeably.”

One thing Obama has done in eight months is take unemployment from 7% to 9.7% while increasing the deficit by a trillion dollars, much of it in a failed stimulus package. Four years ago Nancy Pelosi declared that the War in Afghanistan was over. Now in eight months Obama’s new strategy is losing it. He doesn’t know what to do.
Fifty-six percent (56%) of voters nationwide now oppose the health care reform proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats. That’s the highest level of opposition yet measured and includes 44% who are Strongly Opposed.

Confucious says that he who is blind is not the one who cannot see. It is he who cannot see who is blind. Mr. Obama’s hypocrisy is too much.
Speaking out for the first time, Gov. Paterson’s wife says it is “very unfair,” that her husband be asked not to run for re-election.
“I have never heard of a president asking a sitting governor not to run for re-election,” Michelle Paterson told NBC New York Wednesday. “I thought it was very unusual and very unfair.”
Asked if she thought his blindness is a contributing factor to his low poll numbers, the first lady said “most definitely.”
“People have to see who (the governor) is,” said Mrs. Paterson. “…The whole time I dated David I forgot that he had a sight disability. He has a way of maneuvering and getting around [so] that you forget.”

According to the Congressional Research Service, the Bush administration spent $660 billion on the Iraq War in six years. Obama spent $787 billion on a failed stimulus package, and will spend $880 billion on welfare in 2010.
Medicare has an unfunded liability of $33 Trillion. Social Security’s unfunded liability is roughly the same.
How does a man feel who, in the face of these elementary facts, is on record as saying that the money spent on Iraq would pay for these bankrupt programs? Is he embarrassed? Does he simply feel stupid? One wonders…

I have to laugh that Fascist and others quote unabashed right wingers of the pro-military industrial complex ilk like Anne Bayefsky, a senior fellow with the Hudson Institute and Nile Gardiner, the Director of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom at the Heritage Foundation. What a shocker that they were underwhelmed by Obama’s speech. I’m just always so relieved that I don’t have to sit cringing in embarrassment as I did when Bush spoke at these types of things. If those who voted for Bush twice feel that way about Obama, I have to say I really don’t care. As Skip put it,

why you can’t trust Rasmussen polls
- Pawlenty’s question was based on the traditional four-option menu of “strongly approve”, “somewhat approve”, “somewhat disapprove”, “strongly disapprove”.
The Democrats were based on a four-option menu which asked if voters through their performance was “excellent”, “good”, “fair”, or “poor”.
Research has shown that the former arrangement leads to better numbers in the top two boxes, because some voters will conflate a “fair” performance with one that is worthy of the rating “slightly approve”.
Not only that, but in a subtle wording change, it said Pawlenty was “doing a job” as governor, while it said Franken was “performing a role” as senator.
When Mark Blumenthal went to Rasmussen Reports with a query about this, he was told it was a “mistake that slipped through the cracks.”
yeah…… oooooooops

He doesn’t speak for the people when he pushes the global warming agenda. Write your reps and let them know that we don’t want to pay thousands more each to cover cap and tax!

so sad…..desperate for any self praise, as if ‘casualties continue to mount, the enemy grows bolder, and the commander/in-chief sits paralyzed with indecision’ wasn’t the exact policy of ‘W’ for many years..and his inept accomplices… same failure right up until the day Obama took office….. if Obama is still in Afghanistan after 8 years… you’ll have a reason to say something….
another reason why the republicans were kicked en masse out of the government…..they thought lies would win, they still try, but they are seen for what they are … republicans would sell out america, everyone and do anything to get back into power

Most of Obama’s speech was about apologising for American actions.
Where exactly was Obama tough on the UN.
As usual Jake spins it in Obama’s favor , a very laughable attempt.

Well, I am very much a liberal democrat, and I see Barack Obama as one of the biggest disappointments in the past 50 years.

Jon F – I appreciate your honesty. It seems the people who voted/campaigned/blogged for obama are too stubborn to admit what is really going on; or the scary thing is that they agree with it.
I’ve never been a patriotic American – just taken for granted that I live here. But the last 9 months of obama’s presidency and his apologies for our country have brought out the pride in me. I love this country and everything it has done for our people and this world in 250 years. I am sad about some parts of our history but believe we’ve tried to overcome it the best way we know how.
If it takes a president like this to bring this out in me and millions of other people, then I guess that’s a good thing…but he has to start taking pride in our country and our people! We’ve got to rise up and tell him that’s what we want!!!

Obama’s naivete is on display. No dictators in the history of the universe and ever responded to pleas for reason or apologies. They correctly discern weakness and immediately start looking for ways to exploit that weakness. Russia, Iran, North Korea all now will run over Obama like he means nothing. History has repeated itself for the hundredth time.

It’s about time Obama came close to doing something I liked. Almost every president in my memory has bowed and taken orders from the UN. Some have stood up to them on some issues but none have told them off in general terms. They hate us, whey do we listen to them?
We don’t need to apologize to a group we have supported with money and military since it’s inception. George W. even allowed them to tell us that our gift to the tsunami relief wasn’t good enough. The UN insulted us for doing it and Bush insulted us for letting them get away with it.
We don’t need or want ‘cap and trade’. We have a different situation than other nations so we can’t meet their standards. Try driving across Texas with a tiny electric car. Not like driving across England.
None of them have had enough guts to admit that as long as population continues to grow there is no way to control pollution. All any of them can do is promote more population growth which adds to the problem. If you can’t even talk about the root cause of a problem, why talk about it at all.
The best thing we could do is to get the US our of the UN and get the UN out of the US while we still have some sovereignty.

Big O in brief said the following.
The US apologizes for any past actions we have taken. We are now just part of the world in general. Do not look to us for leadership. We can work things out.
This poor excuse for a President of the USA should stop his denouncment of this country.

Great post, Skip :>)
Yeah Skip awesome, I got a tingle up my leg. Meanwhile a neocon pro-war Sec of State is running around. Great job, Barry. And for all the liberal blabbering about peace, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan still continue.

Anyone else notice Obama called out Israel greater than a dozen times, Palestinians less than 5 times and no mention of radical Islam and terrorist organizations such as Al Queda and Hezbollah?

“But the last 9 months of obama’s presidency and his apologies for our country have brought out the pride in me.”
Same here – Hadn’t paid much attention, hadn’t voted since ’92. The Re-Distributionalist Radical has my full attention.

You all crack me up– so here are two results of Obama’s UN debut as POTUS and his foreign policy that I think are important–
Russian President Dmitri Medvedev suggested for the first time that Moscow would be open to imposing sanctions on Iran if the Islamic republic fails to make the necessary concessions on its nuclear program. In the past, Russia has steadfastly refused to impose sanctions on Iran, due to close economic ties.
In addition, both Russia and China agreed to support President Obama’s efforts to strengthen the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty during today’s session of the Security Council.

The US is talking down to other countries, with this, and that isn’t going to sit well, with some.
While we make such statements, we are not ourselves, acting on our own weapons, or our own policies.
Deeds get more attention, than rhetoric.

Acording to the GUARDIAN, Obama snubbed British Prime Minster Brown by refusing to meet with him one on one. Maybe Brown isn’t the best PM we have had from our ally Britan, but he isn’t a sworn enemy of the US either. Since Obama seems to have no problem meeting with our enimies, why is he unwilling to meet with the PM of Great Britan? Will ABC report on this story?

Very scary that 50% of Americans still approve of this president. Says alot about the direction our country is headed.
Has anyone seen the video of elementary school kids singing about Obama?
“Barrack Hussein Obama”
“mmm mmm mmm”
Reminds me of Venezeula or Germany in the 1940′s.

Obama speaks with so many forked tongues, it is difficult to believe which one he means. You just have to follow his actions.
His naivete is breathtaking. If he thinks Russia is going to somehow sweet talk Iran, he is in for a rude awakening. Those two countries are best buds. And now Obama thinks he will influence the UN…..ROFLMAO!!!!
There still hasn’t been a real serious domestic crisis (national disaster, etc, terror attack) or international crisis for Obama to “cut his teeth” on. When and if that happens, we will see exactly what kind of true President Obama really is. He will either rise to the occasion as a statesman or fall flat on his face like a failure and flunky.

How Scary!!! A scolding!!!
But then again, why should Obama be tough on Chavez, Castro, or Ahmadinejad when he basically agrees with their complaints that America is an unjust, imperialist country? Obama is among friends when he speaks with Chavez, Castro, and Ahmadinejad.

Obama is a radical communist plain and simple. America doesn’t need a radical communist plain and simple. Whatever one’s party affiliation, we should all unite to vote Obama out in 2012 and stop his radicalism!!!

China and Russia haven’t committed to a thing. Iran’s nuclear program is continuing unabated and unchecked.

The naive; as well as the Arrogance with a capital A, of this White House administration is unbelievable and makes for a lethal combination…This administration has held the White House since January of 2009…a plot to create massive destruction and death of innocent by a TERRORIST of Middle-Eastern decent, was just RECENTLY unmasked this month…Don’t be blinded by your naive and arrogance White House…Their goal has not changed since the Bush administration…And I pray, and I am not a religious person by any means, that our intelligence people are not blinded to reality….and continue to do a top notch job…

“But today President Obama told allies and enemies that world skepticism and distrust of America has been a convenient cop-out.”
Actually what he said was America was lousy before I rose to my rightful place and now the world in general is a much better place as a whole.
Becuase of me, me, me, me…
Same speech he has given all over the world whenever he has a camera in his face.
Most naseating speech I have heard since I was a kid listening to Carter. Carter did not have Obama’s incredible narcissism that punctuated nearly every sentence though…

Very selective with content in the speech Jake.
Has management had a talk with you?
Maybe a phone call from Rahm?
Then again, George could just pass along a message from Rahm explaining his displeasure…

Obama said “Democracy cannot be imposed on any nation from the outside. Each society must search for its own path, and no path is perfect.”
Cannot? America imposed democracy on Japan and Germany after WWII, which worked out rather well. Why is the President of the United States ignorant of history?

Despite being in the minority in Congress, Republican campaign committees outraised Democrats by $1.7 million in August as they have aggressively collected political cash amid the rancorous debate over health care. Republicans also held an edge over Democrats in the amount of money available, when counting debts, as both parties set the stage for the 2010 elections,

As the left-wing columnist Walter Lippman observed in 1943, the problem with disarmament is that it only disarms countries that believe in disarmament.

Good speech. I also share the sentiment that world leaders should act on the long-standing problems, rather than just talk.

I have been a critic of Obama. But if this report is true, I say “way to go Obama … I am with you on this”. The United States would be better off without the UN.
