Coming Up EXCLUSIVE: Sebelius, Rockefeller, Pawlenty and Landrieu Discuss the Politics of Health Care

Wednesday night Obama laid out his most detailed plan yet for health care reform. Did it help move members of his own party toward an agreement?  Is there anything Republicans can sign on to?

We’ll find out Sunday on 'This Week' with our EXCLUSIVE health care roundtable featuring HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, two Democratic Senators who disagree on key elements of health care reform, Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia and Mary Landrieu of Louisiana,  and Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty who touts his own state as a model for health care reform. Together they’ll be debating key points of the President’s plan.  Find out how much of an impact the President's speech had on his effort in getting a health care reform bill passed by the end of the year.

Also Sunday our roundtable with George Will, Cokie Roberts, Sam Donaldson and New York Times columnist David Brooks here for a lively discussion on the impact of the President’s speech, the Wilson outburst, and anniversary of the financial crash.

You won’t want to miss this. See you Sunday.

The Mayo Clinic fully supports President Obama’s health care reform, so I hope Pawlenty doesn’t let his arse overload his mouth. The Repubs are so locked stepped into bring our first Black President down that they contradict themselves often and looks like fools.

Trent, The Democrats are the fools to believe they can add 47 million to the health care bill and cut cost, quit drinking the Kool-aid before it’s to late.

Following Minnesota’s example doesn’t thrill me at all. After living in Kansas for years and having good health care, I moved to Minnesota and have not been impressed at all with medical service. When I had a physical and lab tests in Kansas, I was called and/or received a letter telling me the results. Here in Minnesota, I was told I would hear from them when test results were known, BUT, if I didn’t hear from them, call them. You know what happens then…you get their answering machine telling you to leave your name and telephone number and they will “get back to you”! Yeah, Right!

THE CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER IS DEFICIT AND DEBT, not healthcare which will add to both!

I would hope that when Pawlenty brags about MN health care, George lets him have it. Many seniors have been removed from Medicare over the Governor’s policies and because of cut backs at the state level, local communities have had to raise property taxes sky high to make up for the state’s cut backs in health. MN is a disaster and George should let him have it.

The reason for so much opposition to government run health care reform is that it is sad but true that government has a long track record of waste and fraud in most all of their government run programs. Even President Obama thinks there is so much waste and fraud in Medicare that 500 billion can be cut from it without any cuts to services. Of course, no one believes this and the Dems know there will be severe cuts to services to Seniors as a result of these enormous cuts to the Medicare budget. The regrettable truth is government has proven time and time again that they are an incompetent manager of the peoples money and never keep any of their promises. Think about it, by racking up record breaking deficits, the Dems are undermining the very existence of Social Security and Medicare which government promised they would keep afloat at all costs. Despite these facts, the greed for more power and more and more of the peoples money persists and grows like a cancer in their pursuit of a government take over of health care. If government is so cavalier about making enormous cuts to Medicare which will result in severe cuts to services for Seniors, think what will happen to a Single Payer government run system when the money runs out. Bureaucrats, union workers and corporate special interest groups will be first in line to get what money is left over the rest of us will be pounding sand waiting for that heart surgery we need to save our lives. No wonder there is so much talk about “death panels.”

“Coming Up EXCLUSIVE: Sebelius, Rockefeller, Pawlenty and Landrieu Discuss the Politics of Health Care”——-does anyone see the problem with this headline? THERE SHOULD BE NO POLITICS INVOLVED!!! Aren’t these fools in DC supposed to be doing what is right for their constituents? The status quo within the healthcare system is not going to work and needs to be fixed. Allowing the the private sector total control of the system is what broke it in the first place. There is nothing political about it. it’s just common sense.

“The reason for so much opposition to government run health care reform is that it is sad but true that government has a long track record of waste and fraud…”———–no it isn’t. The opposition is because it’s democrats who have proposed the changes. Go to the town halls, find the people screaming and ask them how they voted in the last election. Overwhelmingly, if they’re being honest, they’ll say Republican. I’d bet the farm on it. We’d have the same thing happening if the shoes were on the other feet…the partisanship in this country is ridiculous. It’s pathetic that a bunch of people would fight a plan that in the end would benefit them simply because of the party affiliation of the people supporting the effort. We as a nation have become so pathetic that we deserve what we get out of Washington…….and in most cases that is NOTHING!!!!

This past week former Minnesota Republican Governor Carlson was speaking about his observations of the Pawlenty administration over the past several years. I must say that I was surprised at how critical Carlson was about the lack of leadership and about Pawlenty’s unwillingness to deal with the state budget in a meaningful way.
Carlson mentioned that even though Governor Pawlenty choose to use unallotment as a tool to balance the budget, Governor Pawlenty deferred 70% of the cuts and left them for the next governor to deal with. In short a real lack of leadership and an inability to make hard choices that would have been very unpopular. It was also pointed out that when Governor Pawlenty came into office there was a projected budget deficit of over 4 billion dollars. When Governor Pawlenty leaves office there will a projected deficit of between 4 and 6 billion dollars. The Governor might have been better off to have followed his campaign slogan that said he would cut the “billions and billions of dollars in wasted state spending”. There again is the leadership rub.
My question would be this: If Governor Pawlenty cannot run the state of Minnesota in a fiscally prudent manner. What business does he have to try and replicate the same problems for the federal government?
Governor Pawlenty at best has a nice campaign slogan for his run at the presidency. ” I did not raise taxes”

Maybe Obama should have not bailed out
the auto industry and the banks.
We then would be all out of jobs.
The American people still do not get it.
Today NO JOB – NO HEATH CARE

The previous economic expansion was really fueled by housing. A huge amount of job creation was tied to housing. As well as a huge amount of consumption. Housing peaked 2006.
Short of another debt filled housing boom, where do you propose those jobs are going to come from? Do you realize that a very high percentage of the jobs that were lost were tied to the housing boom? We manufacture very little. You criticize the auto bailout. Who do you think works at those plants.
I hope that you don’t think that you are qualified to advise on economics just because you have a bank account.
Regarding the bank bailout: When you have a catastrophic fire happening what is the most prudent thing to do? You start by pouring and dumping as much water on the fire as it takes, until you have the fire under control. The obvious goal is to not have the fire spread any further and to prevent further damage.
After the fire, the chiefs can debrief and have that conversation about how they might have fought it more effectively.
The fed did what it had to at the time.
Unless you were for a period of Hoover like austerity then perhaps they should have gambled on a different outcome and let the chips fall where they may. Thankfully they did not.
The question you should be asking yourself is what the new economy will look like. As the old one was clearly not sustainable.

Dear George Stephanopoulos,
Their is something you and everybody needs to know about Gov. Pawlenty and the Pawlenty of trouble he has caused. First he is backing Gleen Beck and company in leading several states to leave the usa and form there own country with the states that would leave. Pawlenty is part of this sceam and he would probably become its president. He also has cut general assistance health care I get and it will end at the beginging of 3/2010. He cut the state works health benefits and raised the cost of health insurance and made the state employees pay more out of pocket. Shifting more of the burden on to the state employees which “he says,” Obama would do ,with a Mass. sytle of healthcare plan. He is a lier and a traiter to not only the state of MN ,but the country as well. He should be removed from office in MN and thrown in jail. He also has sent jobs and companies to leave the state and told new ones not to come here. I would ask him and pin him down on it. He can not handle the true and will try to avoid it at any cost. Why do you think he has had to defend himself on tv. Because I keep sending thing to the media about him and this lies.

Dear George Stephanopoulos,
If Pawlenty and Glenn Beck do not suggceed at getting states to leave the USA and form there own country. Then he will do it by running for president of the United States and if he wins would change the condstitution or do away with it so the states could. He is also against any kind of legislation that will help the poor and if their is any middle class lefted. He also cut the budget from the 35 w bridge one year before it collasped by 6 million dollars and that money would also have hired more people in MnDot which is the hwy maintence divison of MN. When people would retire or die he would not replace the workers and fired a manager and did not replace them when it came to the concrete inspectors that inspect the bridges and so on. He cut the money for any new hiring period and there has not been any hiring sence the bridge went or before either. Do not let him lie about health care either.

“CAN ANYONE ANSWER THIS OUESTION”!!!!

why all the hub bub about health care coverage when we already have systems in place. there is medicaid, health departments offer services, hospitals do not turn down patients when medical services are needed and there are other resources available through individual states. it makes no sense to spend all this money and put limits on everyone’s care. it boils down to taxes for all…
Page 65: Taxpayers will subsidize all union retiree and community organizer health plans (example: SEIU, UAW and ACORN)
Page 84: All private healthcare plans must participate in the Healthcare Exchange (i.e., total government control of private plans)

• Page 150: Any employer with a payroll of $250K-400K or more, who does not offer the public option, pays a 2 to 6% tax on payroll
• Page 167: Any individual who doesn’t have acceptable healthcare (according to the government) will be taxed 2.5% of income.
• Page 170: Any NON-RESIDENT alien is exempt from individual taxes (Americans will pay for them).
• Page 195: Officers and employees of Government Healthcare Bureaucracy will have access to ALL American financial and personal records.

Wow, both times, 3 liberals to 1 conservative. That is fair reporting. The President’s race does not matter if spending is out of control. Who is in charge of the GOP? Oh yeah, a black guy. Disagreement is not racism, thinking that it is, is racism.

Why doesn’t the President cut the fraud and abuse NOW. Rather than saying that he WILL cut fraud and abuse IF his health care plan is passed. (And punching one drug company in the eye is NOT really going after the fraud and abuse! Get real!)

All of you act like you are informed and accurate in your reporting. You should be ashamed and this is why your ratings reflect the same. In 2004, Harry Reid called President Bush a liar and looser. Did he apologize for calling him a liar….no. Then in 2005 during a speech to Congress, President Bush was Boo’d and heckled. Did anyone apologize to President Bush or American. No!!! You ALL have such double standards and you LIE TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. You have no creditibility due to your propagandist tactics to cover for Obama’s lies.

This is why I can’t watch your program. Thank GOD for the internet and other broadcasts, Fox News, so that we can get the truth. I know that this is a thorn in your sides because we don’t rely on your false information. Of course, the Dems want get control of the internet and other broadcast sources so you can continue to push and wrongly inform America. I won’t watch your show again.

Pawlenty keeps saying “why trust Medicare, it’s going broke” according to projections; well so is private insurance, but no diligent govt bureaucrat is doing the projections there. Rising premiums and reduced services with ever-higher profits it is unsustainable.
They say Obama’s projections of cost saving are unrealistic; so we are doomed to ever-spiraling costs? They better be realistic

Oh yeah….want to know why the Dems boo’d President Bush….he was saying that unless we get spending in MEDICARE under control, it would be BANKRUPT. THEY BOO’D HIM FOR SAYING THIS…..SURE IS IRONIC!!!

Cokie:
It drives me nuts when you belittle a citizen who is exercising their right to express their concern with an expansion of government when you say “How can you complain? You are already benefiting from government run Medicare?”. You insinuate that the person must be stupid not to understand that government is already providing that same person with Medicare.
Why don’t you unlock your brain Cokie? The person is on Medicare because it was forced upon him. The government took 1.5% (actually 3%) of that person’s salary for his entire career so that person could “enjoy” Medicare benefits! That person wasn’t given a choice Cokie!! Still, that person may want to complain that Medicare is another government run program that is bankrupt. Medicare is not an overwhelming success story, as you seem to think. It is a mess. Just like the many of the programs run by government. Why didn’t anyone respond to Will’s statement today about the 31 trillion that is unfunded to pay for Medicaid? Why? Because you don’t know what to say. Cokie, we, each and every citizen of this country, own our share of the national debt. That is $40,000 per person. How, Ms. Roberts, do you propose that each and every citizen of this country will pay for their share? I’d pay my share tomorrow if you could answer that question. Of course you won’t try. It is too hard of a question for you Cokie. It is ludicrous for me to ask such a ridiculous question, isn’t it Ms. Roberts?

Florida all ready has public option / government option insurance. Citizens Property Insurance (implemented during Govenor Jeb Bush’s tenure) works. Why not use it as an example of how structure National Public Option Health Insruance?

I sell Medicare Advantage policies. Sebelius said that under these programs that the enrollees don’t get as good of coverage as they did under original Medicare. This is not true. They get more!!! Also, they are able to drop private insurance which is extremely high and have much lower premiums thus save money.

Posted by: Stoptheprop | September 13, 2009, 11:52 am 11:52 am

Ms. Sebelius said that the Medicare Advantage program doesn’t give as good of benefits as Original Medicare. This is a LIE on her part. I sell Medicare Advantage plans and with these plans, participants get better benefits and more benefits and they also pay less in premiums than if they were paying a Private company for a Medicare Supplement. They save money!!!!
So, Ms. Sebelius, get your facts right before YOU start lying to America. Or is it just a requirement to be in the Obama Admin to be liar first.

Dear, Chief Washington Correspondent George Stephanopoulos,
That’s the capitol of the richest, most powerful nation in history. But when it comes to providing health care for people, that great country, our country, is a fourth-rate power. The World Health Organization says the U.S. health care system rates 37th in the world in terms of quality and fairness. All the other rich countries do better than we do, and yet they spend a heck of a lot less. How do they do it?
I ask, how can other Capitalist Democracies have better Health and pay half of what we do?
In Brea CA, where I live, if you get an MRI of your neck region, it’s $1,400, and the doctor in Japan says they get $98 for an MRI. So how do you do that?
Can Americans accept ideas from other Capitalist Democracies?
Well, the fact is these foreign health care ideas aren’t really so foreign to us. For American veterans, health care is just like Britain’s NHS. For seniors on Medicare, we’re Taiwan. For working Americans with insurance, we’re Germany. And for the tens of million without health insurance, we’re just another poor country.
But almost all of us can agree that this fragmented health care mess cannot be ignored. The longer we leave it, the sicker it becomes, and the more expensive the cure.
