Democratic Rep.: ‘Republicans Want You to Die Quickly’
ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: A Democratic House member last night used a brief speech on the House floor to mockingly describe GOP health care plans as wanting Americans to "die quickly" — drawing an immediate demand from Republicans for an apology.Rep. Alan Grayson, a freshman Democrat from Florida, brought posters with him onto the House floor during after-hours debate, where members of Congress can address any topic they want.
He built up to this point: "If you get sick, America, the Republican health care plan is this: die quickly. That's right — the Republicans want you to die quickly if you get sick."
"Remember, the Republican plan: Don't get sick. And if you do get sick, die quickly."
Several Republicans immediately demanded that Grayson apologize on the House floor for his remark, though Grayson did not return to the podium to speak again during the evening session.
A Republican aide said GOP leaders will continue to press for an apology from Grayson, particularly after Democrats went so far as to pass a resolution of disapproval against Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., after his "you lie!" outburst directed at President Obama on the House floor last month.

Geeze !! I predict a major tirn over in representation come election time. What a bunch of kindegartners. That is BOTH Republicans and Democrats. STOP calling names and pitching fits and get moving on health care. Come on guys and gals. Earn that free (or basically free) healthcare.

Rep. Grayson used his assigned floor time to speak on a topic of his choosing and (shockingly) spoke on a topic of his choosing. Rather than falling back to their standard of whining, perhaps Republicans should use their assigned time to make a factual rebuttal of Grayson’s attack. Because currently the articulated Republican position is yes, IF you do not buy insurance you should die if you cannot afford healthcare. Seriously – what other plan have they put forward? (True, they are in complete denial of the very expensive Emergency Room safety net that in reality serves the uninsured, but reality seems to mean little to the Republican party.)
Posted by: jhw539 | September 30, 2009, 9:03 am 9:03 am
Why should Grayson apologize? All the crap the repubs have pulled just in the last nine months has been shocking and appalling. Remember when it was said that democrats were “trying to kill grandma”, among other things? Repubs always get in a huff and demand apologies when democrats say or do something they deem insulting, but when they do the same thing it’s altogether different. Besides, what Grayson says is true! If health care reform fails, don’t get sick because insurance companies won’t care if you’re democrat or republican!!
Posted by: zee | September 30, 2009, 9:09 am 9:09 am
I thought the Republican position was:
1. Tort Reform
2. The ability to buy insurance across State lines.
Whereas the Democrat position was:
1. The Public Option – Government takes over the healthcare industry.
2. Illegal immigrants get healthcare.
3. Abortion is provided.

Never ever again label the Republicans fear mongers. This democrat jerk is pushing fear and doom and gloom and mistrust and his supposed superior intellect all at the same time. He thinks he knows better than 70% of the population knows what we want.

The Democrats are hypocrits screaming about fear-mongering while doing the same thing themselves. Decrying name calling and slander while doing the same themselves. Talking about the need for bi-partisanship while refusing to let Republican amendments even get a hearing. They need to take a long hard look in the mirror.

It is no secret that Congressman Grayson is mentally unbalanced.
Will the Punch report on how Nevada doesn’t have to pay for their Obamacare? That Nevada and 3 other states — Baucus bought the votes — will get 100% coverage of their ballooning Medicaid/Obamacare. Nevada has no state income taxes, but they will get their Obamacare paid for by shifting all the cost to other states.
Every state will have their cost share increased so Dirty Harry can fund his corrupt children into public office.
Why does Mississippi — which has an income tax – have to pay for Medicaid in Nevada – which has no income tax.
Because Baucus is a corrupt.

“Why does Mississippi — which has an income tax – have to pay for Medicaid in Nevada – which has no income tax.”
Karen | Sep 30, 2009 10:01:54 AM
Wow, the ignorance on the Right (should be) embarrassing. Nevada has been paying extra taxes for years to support Mississippi and their economically stunting ‘small government’ policies. Nevada gets back only $0.62 for every $1.00 they pay in federal taxes. Mississippi gets back $2.02 (2nd highest leech state in the nation!) for every $1.00 they lay in federal taxes. (2005 numbers from the Tax Foundation – a pretty conservative group.) In general, all those states that ‘waste’ money on things like libraries, teaching evolution and birth control, and providing improved social safety nets are paying more in federal taxes to support the backwards ‘self reliant’ red states (although Texas is an exception – a red state that is pulling their weight).
But that’s just documented reality, not a right wing bumper sticker.

I am 70 yrs old and I don’t care which way health reform goes. I want health care reform, but the truth is that the government does not know what to do with it. Public plan or not, who cares. I have never seen the government do anything that has not been a total mess. They put ‘something’ into law and turn it over to others to run. That is where it goes to pot. Those people don’t have the details correct and the more new rules they make the worse things will get.

Lawmakers lack the understanding as to what bothers the public. Whatever health care reform they put in, who cares. When it is in, that is when it counts. Bottom line for people, can I get the care I need and will the cost be reasonable? The ‘plan’ must not break the government and it must not raise taxes. Have someone guarantee that ‘our’ data will not be compromised. Planning to say I’m sorry for mistakes down the line is not going to get it. Think people, think.

One last thing. I’m a veteran and the VA health care system should not be used as a model for a public health care reform. Boy, that was a close one. Half of our nation are veterans or are related to veterans. People are sent off to fight for our government, in foreign lands. If the get wounded, it is a crap shoot if they will get the care they need. If the VA doesn’t provide the needed care, the vets are on their own and Congress and the President could care less.

Actually, based on what the Dems want to do with Medicare changes and cuts in benefits, I believe it is the Dems, who want the aged, to “die quickly”.
Indeed, I see little in Dems plans, to indicate they want to provide anything to the aged, whatsoever, including the social security benefits that retirees have paid into, all their working lives.

Since the GOP has never supported Medicad or Medicare, I think the guy is right, they do want Americans to die (in war, especially. Do they support anything that makes life and existence peaceful and pleasant. Why is life worth living when you are a GOP, tell me please. You can’t take money with you when you die so why not spend it up while you are living on healthcare if you want to and help (love) your neighbor as the Good Book says. Tea Party Libertians have taken on a task that the GOP is acting as if they own it, beware of the sheep in wolf clothing.
No apology needed, right now I am interested in how many apologies have the GOP racked up in talking directly about the President. Do anyone know? This GOP group is definitely a group of say what you want then say you are sorry and we secretly hope the damage has been done. Please someone tell me how many I am sorry have the GOP done and why do they pretend that they true to their values when they have none.

First in response to “Republicans should use their assigned time to make a factual rebuttal of Grayson’s attack. Seriously – what other plan have they put forward?” Posted by (: jhw539 | Sep 30, 2009 9:03:00 AM) If you would use your brain and look on-line and listen to speeches by republicans here are a few Ideas:
“We do need medical liability reform, and it needs to be real reform. We need to establish tough liability reform standards, encourage speedy resolution of claims, and deter junk lawsuits that drive up the cost of care.”
“Let’s also talk about letting families and businesses buy insurance across state lines. I and many other Republicans believe that will provide real choice and competition to lower the cost of health insurance.”
“All individuals should have access to coverage, regardless of preexisting conditions.”
“Individuals, small businesses and other groups should be able to join together to get health insurance at lower prices, the same way large businesses and labor unions do.”
“We can provide assistance to those who still cannot access a doctor.”
“insurers should be able to offer incentives for wellness care and prevention – something particularly important to me. I operated on too many people who could have avoided surgery if they’d simply made healthier choices earlier in life.” (Dr. Charles Boustany (R-LA))
JHW539 I have not heard one Republican say if you cant afford it then die! Stop fear Mongering! Am I allowed to use that term or do you Libs have that copy write protected so you can use it anytime you might not get your way. By the way Support for this Healthcare reform is at its all time low!

Republicans have called for an apology from the Florida Democrat, and have compared Grayson’s remark to Rep. Joe Wilson’s (R-S.C.) “You lie!” outburst.
But there’s a big a difference between the two floor statements. One was unprecedented — the president had never been called a liar by a member of Congress during an address in all of American history.
By contrast, charges that the opposition’s health care plan will kill people have been about as common on the House floor lately as resolutions naming post offices.

A pox on both their houses (and they have the insurance to pay for it!).

A couple of points:
1. Saying that there would be no outrage of Hannity or Levine or Beck or Rush made a claim like Grayson’s is a moot point because none of those men are ELECTED officials, selected by the public to represent them at the federal level.
2. As a Republican, I do not want the sick to “die quickly” (if by that you mean get no treatment what-so-ever), and based on what I see from my Republican representatives, neither do they.
3. I believe that the choices you make lend to your success. While I am an avid supporter of charity services, I do not feel that successful (or even struggling) citizens should foot the bill for those who are destitute, simply because they are destitute. I feel that too much focus is placed on the “charity” of government programs and not NEARLY enough focus on programs that will genuinely advance these people beyond their circumstances.
4. For the record, my ideal reform would include:
a) tort reform
b) state-to-state competition
c) a complete, top-down examination and repair of the fraud and waste in the existing government-run/subsidized health programs
d) modification of the definition of “pre-existing condition”
e) NO “public option” or expansion of the existing options until “C” is completed.

Steve, only those folks who don’t educate themselves truly believe that the republicans don’t have alternate plans for health care reform. Those alternative plans are out there and they’re not hard to find.
As for your comment that “republicans never cared for the poor” ummmm …. which evil uncaring president created the Office of Faith-based charities to help local organizations better meet the needs of the poor? Which evil president created a law mandating that school districts ensure equal educational gains in their poor schools as well as their wealthier schools? Which evil president, who doesn’t care about the poor, sent an unprecidented amount of money to Africa to increase AIDS prevention and education? Even Bono praised that evil uncaring president for his work funding AIDS prevention. Get off your high horse. It’s the democrats, not the republicans, who want to pass a law mandating that even folks who can’t afford it should be forced to buy a health insurance plan — a move that will make health insurance companies very, very wealthy. The democrats are the ones who don’t care that if Cap and Trade eventually passes, the poor might not be able to turn on their air conditioning in the summer – but the bill makes favored companies very wealthy. The democrats wrote the housing revitalization legislation and didn’t include one ounce of funding for helping people recover from foreclosure. Time to stop pretending that it’s the democrats who care about the poor when the facts simply don’t back up that statement.

Why do Republican’s feel that it’s wrong for the rich to pay extra taxes and the poor to pay less? Don’t they know that it’s the poor that keep the rich wealthy? If the poor cannot go out and buy goods and services then it will affect everyone financially. That’s why we’re in a huge deficit now. The rich taking advantage of the poor. Now poverty is trickling up.

justayreal:
The rich DO pay more taxes then the poor. For decades (since debate over the flat tax ended) our country has enjoyed a progressive tax system that ensures that the rich pay much more in taxes then the poor. The poorest in our society are exempt from paying taxes while the richest pay about 39 percent on income tax. Most everyone else falls somewhere in between.
Few republicans actually argue for the flat tax (that’s mostly libertarians). What republicans are against is raising that top tier of 39 percent even higher. I haven’t heard any republican – and I challenge you to name just one – who has argued that the poor and rich should pay equal tax rates.
By the way, it is a common misconception among the democrats that there is something wrong with being poor or middle class – there’s nothing wrong with it. Every society has poor people and most have rich people as well. The challenge is to ensure that the poor enjoy a comfortable lifestyle where they are as equally respected as the rich. Making the rich pay more taxes doesn’t further that goal.

The “poor” aren’t making anybody wealthier. The “poor” pay very little into taxes, and only via sales tax in most cases. I never said that help should not be offered to the poor. I said that help should include programs that lend to ADVANCING the poor and helping them help themselves so that they can become successful.
Handing somebody 900/month in welfare and 300/month in food stamps isn’t doing anything to help them get away from the need for that money. I’m all for TEMPORARY aid to those who need it, but it should be just that: temporary. You don’t hear many stories about the former welfare receipient who is now a 40k/year tax accountant or a 40k/year beautician or a 40k/year teacher…and there’s a reason for that. These welfare programs are not designed to build people up..they’re designed to help people survive.
If somebody is satisfied with just “surviving” and taking “free” money to do so…eventually I get pretty frustrated knowing I’m working my but off (without a college education) to advance beyond “lower middle class” and all the while I’m helping to pay for those people to “survive”.
There are no programs that I am aware of that are legitimate “welfare to work” programs. These programs would provide funding for housing, necessities, etc., while providing access to educational programs and certification processes to help these people get into CAREERS and help them take care of themselves. THAT’S what I support…not more hand-outs for the poor.

You all have fallen into the trap that has been set up to put Americans under continual duress resulting in an oprtunity for a select few to gain even more wealth and control. Foolish little minds!

Grayson was right……DON”T apologize. The difference: Calling the President of the United States a LIAR ………..is NOT the same behavior of a collegeau trying to win their arguments….They Do Want You (US) to die…….if you Don’t have Any Money………..that is what measuring life to them is all about. KEEP ‘EM IGNORANT WITH LIES, CALL THEM PATRIOTS, AND PRO-LIFERS, KEEP THEM ANGRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY AND IGNORANT. THESE ARE THE FOLLOWERS OF THE REPUBLICANS…..AMERICA IS NOT, NOT IGNORANT, JUST A FEW…THIS EXPLAINS IT ALL……..

Tessa…..who gets welfare?…..it was over when Clinton signed the Welfare Reform in the 1990′s….what rock has you been living under, or who Lies you believe without checking out your facts. With Welfare REFORM and the shipping of well paying jobs overseas in the 1980′s….the two members that are working, are working for low-wages, and UNAFFORDABLE INSURANCE COVERAGE. I don’t know anyone who receives welfare of 900.00 and 300.00 in food stamps and if you know one, then that’s one, and do Not group All Americans into your misguided, misinformation that you received via the talking heads of the republican party and the likes of “fearmongers” Beck, Hannity and Rush.

Where is that deeply upset Speaker Pelosi?
She was just about in tears a few days ago over the “language” of the debate.
I don’t imagine she has the guts to call out Grayson on this, especially after the “holocaust” statement!
Time to step up Pelosi, Time to put your actions where your mouth is!

Way to go Rep Greyson. Your comments are in no way inappropriate, in the manner and forum you have said them in, given similar statements on the floor by 3 Republicans lately (Not including Wilson’s clear breach of Decorum).
We need to push the public option all the way to a Senate Floor vote or filibuster.
Let the Republicans ‘kill this bill with a filibuster’ in the Senate if they can to set the stage for the upcoming 2010 elections.
The voters will then make it plainly clear what they think of the insurance companies and that they want the public option.
And, we will not have to worry about their charades anymore.
All aboard the train to filibuster!

With so many people approving of Rep. grayson making these comments while on the job (yup, we taxpayers paid for that lovely little speech and the props too), it’s no wonder that this country is fading fast. whether you really believe that republicans want you dead or not is simply not the point. This silly bit of name calling was juvenile and it was done on the taxpayer’s dime. It’s a pity that so many folks are willing to pay for this petty, middle school like behavior.

Mr President,
I would like to report Congressman Grayson misrepresenting facts in the health care debate. Holding my breath and waiting for you to “call him out”.

Well, let’s see here:
1) Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite (R-Fla.) said Dem plans would tell seniors to “drop dead.”
2) Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.) said Democratic plans for a public option would “kill people.”
3) Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) said Dems’ proposals might “put seniors in a position of being put to death by their govt.” and,
4) Wilson said “You Lie”
I guess the Democrats finally got with the program!

Don’t know why the Republicans are so upset. Grayson is 100% correct. Obviously many haven’t been keeping up with the latest financial trends from the hedge fund gamblers and big wall street bankers, the larger percentage of whom lean Republican. Since they can no longer repackage real estate into the fantasy packages that helped bring the economy crashing down around our ears, they are now buying up LIFE INSURANCE policies and repackaging the good with the bad and selling in packages. The good being the policy holders who will croak very soon, and the bad being the policy holders who may live a longer life. Many are buying million dollar policies for $400,000 or less, from the holder, and of course hoping that the holder will pass away very soon. The premiums still have to be paid till the holder dies and the sooner they die the less the hedge funds and banks have to shell out to pay the on going premiums. The longer you live the less profit to be made. So yes, if you happen to be one of these policy holders in the twilight of your life and decided to take one of these offers for your policy, they are “hoping you get sick and die”, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Absolutely not-no apology is in order. The shock & awe approach is about the only thing some people can understand. The republicans answer is “do nothing”. Right now the middle class is being squeezed out into poverty & soon none of them will have insurance. I bet the republicans tune will change in a decade or so when the wealthy are squeezed into becoming middle class & are the next in line to lose their health insurance. By not doing someting to fix a dying system they are only hurting themselves in the long run.

It seems our politicians needs lessons from Ms Manors. Why are they spending time on stuff that solves nothing but grand stand. I believe the government is part of the health care problem. Right now there is no accountability for ourselves. we have a system that has to charge the people that pay more to cover for the ones how don’t. But even with all the problems anyone can walk into a hospital and get service unlike other countries where there are put on a waiting list and woman having babies in the hall because there is no room. People are coming here for our health care. Yes health care needs work. But our politicians should focus on the most important thing is jobs. Bring the companies back to this country. The more jobs there are the more people that will have their own money.

Just two more things to say: Freedom of speech AND Public Option is vital

It’s not that republicans want you to “die quickly”. They take more the “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn” approach. they are like the survivors on the Titanic. Once they were on the lifeboats, they wouldn’t go back for anyone else.
Posted by: phoenix lady | October 1, 2009, 1:50 am 1:50 am
This comment is ridiculous, insulting to anyone and ignorant. So if you have alternative ideas to government run everything you want people to die?! The american people and I would include this congressman’s constituents have different perspectives on the issue. He needs to apologize and walk away from this until he can act civil.

This IDIOT is obviously a freaking nutjob. No one has ever heard of this loser but he made a name for himself when he compared the lack of health care to the Holocaust!! What a complete MORON!
Posted by: Sunnyr | October 1, 2009, 3:46 am 3:46 am
They don’t want anyone to die quickly. They just want to protect the billions of dollars going to all the players in health care. The money is lining the pockets of many people,(not necessarily the middle class workers) but the people at the top of the medical profession, the pharmaceutical companies, the medical supply people, who overprice everything beyond being reasonable, the insurance cos., and of course the lobbyists, who have to line the pockets of our “trusted” polititcians. The insurance companies just don’t want to pay the unreasonable costs of saving someones life. It’s all about the money.

It’s not that they want people to die, but rather that they love and care for ‘money’ far more than people.
The net effect is that more people die under their set of priorities.

I watched this entire speech including the portions leading up to the punch lines. It was clear from his tone that he was being humorously sarcastic. And, that it plainly clear from his unembarrassed post speech interviews (such as on CNN and MSNBC) when he spoke rather confidently about what he was conveying.
When you compare this to the recent similar speeches of the Republicans you notice a very different and serious tone in the delivery. Check out for instance:
1) Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite (R-Fla.) who said Dem plans would tell seniors to “drop dead.”
2) Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.) who said Democratic plans for a public option would “kill people.”
3) Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) who said Dems’ proposals might “put seniors in a position of being put to death by their govt.” and,
4) Wilson who said “You Lie”
If they want to pass a resolution condemning this man, there is no doubt that all of the above Republicans qualify to be put on that resolution as well.
It looks to me as though the one very smart and confident Democrat finally ‘got with the program’ that the republicans have been using!

I think that he should apologize if he wants to, if it is born of hinm (which I dont think it is). But in the same way Democrats should not have gotten a firecracker up their butt when they wanted an apology when the president was called a liar. Just the same way he has freedom to say what he wanted, this man has the freedom to say what he wants as long as it does not cause any direct harm to anyone… isnt that the Constitutional right? Democrats should suck it up when something happens to their party and not justify something when it is done to the other. Enough of fighting over he said she said, wasnt this president going to bring us together? And look at the condition of the country. We have greater things to worry about. Stop being like children in a playground people and start acting as ONE nation under GOD!
