Dems Hit Paydirt on Heckle?

President Obama’s clarity last night probably helped him with the public.

His passion likely energized Democrats. But no evidence yet that he changed the fundamental legislative dynamic: Democrats are going to have to pass reform on their own.

And they claim at least one immediate political benefit from Congressman Joe Wilson’s outburst: overnight Wilson’s opponent, former Marine Joe Miller, received 3000 individual contributions totaling about $100,000.

UPDATE: My colleague David Chalian just heard from the DCCC that Miller’s take since the "you lie" moment is more than $400,000 from 11,000 contributors. That means he's raised two-thirds of his
total take from the 2008 congressional cycle in less than 24 hours.

Of course Wilson did trounce Miller in 2008: 54- 46

Here's the rest of my conversation with Diane on GMA.

I don’t know what Mr. Wilson (age approx = IQ which appears to be about 10) did before he was elected to SC congressional district, but I think he should go back to that career. While he has the right to disagree with the president, he as an elected member of congress has a certain resposibility to uphold the traditions and respect of that office. Seems like all the rats in Sc are running themselves off the ship – are the democrats to blame for this as well?

Joe Wilson’s outburst exemplifies the emotional vs. reasonable GOP strategy to help the Insurance Companies defeat reform. Reminds me of the old woman on Monty Python’s Holy Grail…”She’s a witch…BURN HER!!!”
What a maroon…

if i were a republican i’d want to punch this dude in the face…heck, i’m not a republican and i want to punch him in the face…for different reasons. kind of hard to claim that the anti-obama crowd isn’t composed of wild-eyed loons when a member of congress so awfully breaks rules of decorum in an internationally televised speech by the president. keep your stupid mouth shut, show the respect for the office of president and the chamber in which you sit during the speech. voice your concerns afterward. unacceptable behavior. the U.S. congress is not the south korean parliament, where lawmakers settle debates with flying fists. what a fool this guy is.

I think Joe Wilson is an DUMMY. Grow up Joe Wilson. It shows me the GOP sucks really bad. They will try anything to hurt President Obama, It’s back firing on them.

Posted by: Dominique Auguste | September 10, 2009, 8:31 am 8:31 am

Republican, I’m interested, exactly how much did Joe Wilson raise for his opponent?

Posted by: Sue | September 10, 2009, 8:33 am 8:33 am

This misses the point of last night. Obama gave NO SPECIFICS as to how he would actually pay for this plan. If it was so easy to find fraud and waste in medicare, don’t you think they would have done it already? Even if he could find the fraud and waste in medicare, this only covers the plan until Obama leaves office. Then this giant entitlement is the problem of the next admin.

Posted by: andrew | September 10, 2009, 8:34 am 8:34 am

I don’t care for Wilson but he told the truth. Obama is a big liar and the entire country knows it. Never saw anyond fall so quickly in the polls.

Posted by: barefootboy | September 10, 2009, 8:34 am 8:34 am

Bad form to be sure but let’s be honest here. HE’S RIGHT!!!!! The President can not tell the truth…he’s says it won’t cost anything…CBO says 1.5 trillion over 10 years. He says we can keep our insurance if we like it but that is false because the way the bill is written if my employer opts out I get the public option. He’s says they will save 500 billion in finding fraud….excuse me….why isn’t that being done NOW! The problem is he says one thing, Nancy the Puke writes it another, Reid will have another version, it’ll go to committee and Obama will sign ANYTHING that comes across his desk regardless of what is in it and regardless of how different it is from what he said. He’ll just throw up his hands and say, “that’s what they sent me…what can I do?” Bottom line is the Dems have the votes in both chambers regardless of how the voters feel about it. However, they are scared to death of doingit alone because they know come 2010 this will be a map changer and it will be for many, many cycles because they are the only ones with fingerprints on it and when it fails and fails and fails they will be the only ones to blame and it will cost them. The ONLY reason they want something that looks bipartisan is so they can have a butt shield by saying, “they voted for it also”.

Posted by: Adam | September 10, 2009, 8:35 am 8:35 am

How quickly they forget – or perhaps just neglected to mention in the first place – the heckling Pres. Bush received during his State of the Union Address! What goes around comes around!

Posted by: nomomoney | September 10, 2009, 8:36 am 8:36 am

Joe Wilson said what I wish I could’ve said if I were there! If “showing passion” was okay for the Dems, then why don’t the Reps get credit for showing it? Why should HE apologize?
Media bias in coverage of this healthcare mess is showing more and more.

Is anyone going to investigate why the outburst was made? Was it frustration, did he catch Obama in a lie, or both?

Posted by: Baldflyboy | September 10, 2009, 8:36 am 8:36 am

We need to teach our children a liar never prospers, and always gets caught. Obama was caught, and is failing as president.

I remember when the Democrats hissed at George Bush when he addressed Congress. No one made a big deal of it. Only when Barack almighty speaks.

Posted by: Kathy | September 10, 2009, 8:43 am 8:43 am

I remember when I respected Stephanopoulos a lot and my wife used to say he is cute. Now we detest him. He is strickly a democrat and should be neutral as a journalist. I was glad to see Joe Wilson say what he did. He was right and the democrats should remember when they heckled Bush. They are plain hypocrits and the majority is seeing through them now. Wish they had a year ago, but we will vote them out next year and eventually vote Obame the lying fruit cake out of office.

Posted by: barefootboy | September 10, 2009, 8:43 am 8:43 am

Even if health care for all may cost money, why wouldn’t you want to invest in the health of our country vs. the death of our servicemen and women and innocent people from other countries caught up in wars without end that have cost us billions of dollars? Wouldn’t you rather see that money invested in to the health and wellbeing of our elderly parents, our children and grandchildren, the working poor and the struggling middle and working class people who are at constant risk of losing hearth and home due to a backbreaking medical bill? I don’t understand the selfishness, and I never will.

Poor John. Are we talking about liars? Then by every right we should BEGIN with Bush, then Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice… the whole cabal. But the POINT here, John, is that even though many people KNEW the Administration was lying during the last 8 years, people had the good MANNERS not to yell it like you were at a sporting event during Bush’s speeches. We are talking about knowing how to behave. This Wilson has no right to be in public office if he doesn’t know how to behave. He should go back to whatever he did before the election.
And… really, all you people saying ‘Liars!’ – where on earth WERE you during the last administration? Obama is trying to help every single person (even you… duh) in this country. If you haven’t had to tangle with the Health Care Insurance community, count yourself darned LUCKY. It’s a nightmare, and people, nice people, are dying because of it.

Mr. barefootboy. Mr. Wilson’s outburst came after the President denied coverage for illegal immigrants. Now,which of them is right? If you say it’s the President, please provide the evidence. Secondly, as to your figures, why does it matter how much it costs. 40 million plus hard-working, tax-paying Americans have no access to health care. The figure you cite is less than the total for the Iraq war. What was that for?

This was about the only part of O’s speech I heard last night…everything else seemed to be white noise…oh well at any rate the good congressman hasn’t been watching the other hand…
When O says his health care bill will not cover illegals…he technically isn’t lying…follow the agenda…next up immigration reform…it won’t cover illegals because the next fight will be to make all illegals…legal…therefore we won’t have any illegal that we need to insure.
Ya have to look at the big picture and watch both hands…

What Obama’s doing is transparent to Americans.

Long T,
This is not a first – Bush was booed in 2005. Personally i find the whole matter distasteful. Everyone should show respect for the Office even if they don’t have respect for the man. That said, I find it incredibly hypocritical that Democrats and the media are wringing their collective hands about this when they showed no or little concern when their own party did it to our former president.

Posted by: LadyGwen2 | September 10, 2009, 8:58 am 8:58 am

I’m not from SC but if I were, I’d vote for Joe each and every chance I got. It’s high time people started telling the Emperor he has no clothes. The lies coming from the POTUS are becoming tiring and condescending. It’s high time someone said it out loud. Joe had nothing to apologize for.

After all is said and done, the outburst is the best that can be claimed by the President. I’ve heard it all before. He put out nothing new. He only said we politicians are in charge and the heck with how the people think or what they want.

Media comments after President George W Bush’s State of the Union speech in 2005:
TED KOPPEL (ABC host): When the president talked about the bankruptcy of Social Security, there were clearly some Democrats on the floor who thought that that was taking it too far. And they did something that, apparently, no one at this table has ever heard before. They booed. [ABC, Nightline, 2/2/05; Koppel's panel consisted of former Bush adviser Mary Matalin, former Reagan chief of staff Ken Duberstein, and former Clinton speechwriter Michael Waldman]
JOHN ROBERTS (CBS White House correspondent): At a couple points in this address, it looked more like the British Parliament than the United States Congress. I’ve never heard the minority party shout at the president during the State of the Union address. [CBS, post-speech coverage, 2/2/05]
JOE SCARBOROUGH (former U.S. representative (R-FL) and MSNBC host): After the Democrats booed and hissed, Republicans were on the floor saying, you know, we never once did that to Clinton. So every time he would talk about Social Security, the roars got a little louder. And they got behind their president. [MSNBC, Hardball, 2/2/05]
BOB BARR (former U.S. representative (R-GA) and CNN contributor): It will be a very, very difficult battle as we saw by the unprecedented and, I think, highly improper virtual booing of the president when he simply said that the system is going to be bankrupt and the time is now to fix it. [CNN, Inside Politics, 2/3/05]
JOE WATKINS (radio host and CNN substitute host): Did you hear it? Certainly not the polite protocol usually practiced when a president speaks to Congress. If a Democrat one day delivers a State of the Union address, I hope the Republicans won’t lower themselves to such a disrespectful level. I hope last night’s behavior by a few lawmakers doesn’t set a new precedent, that both parties can agree to remain civil, even when voicing disagreements.

Rep. Wilson was totally out of line. 100% correct but he should not have interrupted the president’s speech. If Wilson isn’t capable of proper behavior he should not be in those chambers. Whatever he did before, he should go back to. Maybe he’s mature enough to do that.
Specific language must be included in the bill to limit benefits to citizens and provide for enforcement. If that is not contained in the bill there will be no way to keep illegal aliens and other non-citizens from receiving care at the expense of the American taxpayer. Since I have heard or read no mention of such provisions I think it’s safe to say that none exist. If that is the case, Obama did lie, again.
Civility and propriety are words seldom used. Wilson need to get a dictionary and look them up. Maybe even put them into practice once in a while.

3000 individuals donated over $100,000 to Joe Wilson’s OPPONENT in the last 24 hours. The NONPARTISAN factcheck.org has discredited the assertion to which Wilson called Obama a liar. There is no health care provision for illegal aliens. All of you people who believe the craziness that the ultra-right wing is spewing about this president and health care reform, need to educate yourselves. You really are starting to look foolish.

While our Utopian Cult Leader was preaching, Nancy and Joe were in the back, nodding affirmatively for us to drink the Kool-Aid. Thanks, we will pass.
His Marxist Leninist Czar fired Saturday at midnight when the public found out, and Carol Browner’s International Socialist Membership now coming to light, I seriously doubt he’s going to get anyone to follow him into the bathroom, much less into a gov’t takeover of healthcare.
I want to remark, too, that while we debate this, our men are dying in wars. Where is the new leadership we were promised? Where is the new brilliant strategy he promised to win this important war? Where is his new diplomacy, turning our enemies into friends?
Iran will have a bomb this year. North Korea threatens to launch one now. We are no closer to peace anywhere on this planet.
The economy is just coming out of a serious recession, despite his massive 780 billion payoff to the left, not because of it. Only 100 bil has been spent so far.
His leadership in Foreign Affairs is about as effective as his leadership in healthcare. We will be survive it but it will cost us so many good American Lives. That is the price we will pay for getting sick on this Kool-Aid.
Civil War looms seriously in our near future. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) is normally a soft spoken, reasoned man. To see him lose control, is to know the passions that are just under the surface in these debates.
We approach a serious point in our political lives.
Be reasoned, be seriously attentive to values of those who are in the opposition. Be human. There are points, past which, no one will endure a tyranny of a reckless majority.

The Repubs are officially pathological liars. In other words, they have reached the point where they now actually believe the lies they peddle.
For the record, Congressman Wilson screamed “you lie” when the president stated that the proposed health care reform plan would NOT pay for the medical care of illegal aliens. Thus, in the opinion of Congressman Wilson, the plan will result in taxpayer money being spent on medical care for illegal aliens.
Now for the truth: The plan, as written, does, indeed, specifically and clearly state that illegal aliens are NOT eligible. Moreover, substantial proof of citizenship must be furnished to get coverage through the program. Bottom line, at least on this point, the CONGRESSMAN is the liar.

Daily, I am amazed at the rancor and acrimony expressed by Republicans toward the President, and was at a loss to understand their unbridled and unprecendented rage. Yesterday, the glimmer of an explanation appeared from Republican strategist Joe Wilson who contends that the president is TOO POPULAR (and therefore shouldn’t address school children, encouraging them to work hard and stay in school).
Yeah, that starts to explain things…the Rs are afraid of Obama’s (continued) success.

this display was disrespectful and displayed to everyone the divisiveness that continues and grows between the two parties.the anger and hostility that is fostered by each consecutive administration is getting so out of control it is humiliating us in front of other nations.while this president would like for people to believe that he is trying to reconcile, the truth becomes evident in the frustration that was displayed last night. obama loses this one only because it is highlighted that we in this country still havent found someone who can mend our political wounds. i believe that is what many were hoping for when they voted for him. it is certainly again what we were promised in yet another deceitful presidential campaign.

I’m a Republican and I think it was not right for Wilson to heckle — you respect the office of the President and respect tradition and decorum. Something the DEMS could have taken in account when Bush was hissed at, screamed at and shouted down when he was in office and gave state of the unions and addresses. It wasn’t right then and not right now. Save it for the camera’s and interviews AFTER the speech.

Posted by: Gauston in DC | September 10, 2009, 9:19 am 9:19 am

No matter whether you respect the man, you ALWAYS respect the office of the President of the United States. I hated George Bush with a passion, but I would NEVER show such disrespect to the office while he was giving a speech. Joe Wilson of SC has shown total disrespect for our government and the highest office in the land. The ONLY proper response would be immediate resignation and a permanent barring from serving public office ever again. I’m sorry but there is no excuse or apology sufficient to forgive this kind of total disrespect to our government, to our country and to what our forefathers founded. And I would have said the same thing had a Democrat said that same foolish, idiotic and bordering on treasonist comment.

Posted by: Henry | September 10, 2009, 9:21 am 9:21 am

wow great responses. Freedom of speech and passion for doing the right thing vs respect for the office of the presidency. GOP lied to us about the Iraq War and it cost us thousands of American lives and tens of thousands of wounded Americans.
GOP lied to us about the banking deregulation that led to the crisis where Obama and McCain had to stop campaigning last year and help President Bush figure out what to do about the train wreck economy Bush led us into.
Pulitzer Prize winning Politifact has repeatedly had to call out GOP leaders like Wilson and Palin for their “Pants on Fire” lies.

Wilson called the White House to apologize. “This evening, I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the president’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the health care bill,” he said.
Sen. John McCain called Wilson’s outburst “totally disrespectful” and said he should apologize. He said there was “no place for it in that setting or any other and he should apologize immediately.”
Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tennessee, denounced the heckling.
Sen. Lindsey Graham said, “The president’s combative tone did not justify a member of Congress shouting out, ‘You lie,’ ”
Wilson violated the “House Republicans’ stated rules of decorum”. It states, “The precedents of the House allow a wide latitude in criticism of the President, other executive officials, and the government itself. However, it is not permissible to use language that is personally offensive to the President, such as referring to him as a ‘hypocrite’ or a ‘liar.’”

As a conservative, I cringed when Joe Wilson made the “you lie” outburst during Obama’s address to Congress. That was in poor taste. That said, the President still didn’t make his case for radical reform of the healthcare system.

No they would not have taken care of the fraud in Medicare because it is benefiting people like the heckler ….Pres. Bush looked the other way and did nothing about healthcare. Don’t you see that the people who are against the president’s plan are most likely benefiting from the fraud? He gave a great speech, we are not paying for illegals, everyone will be covered, and yes once we get thru fraud, including unessessary tests we will save money. He answered all the questions and there are still people saying he lies? Wake up. Don’t believe the scare tactics these Republicans are spreading. And the heckler should be fired! This is what Republicans are all about and why nothing was ever done about healthcare.

You go on about freedoms and democracy, did you complain when Bush was given the Presidency the first time out? That’s not democracy! Did you complain when he took away your basic freedoms in the Patriot Act, that have been overturned as unconstitutional? You do realize, I hope that those that wrote the Constitution were seen as the LIBERALS at that time, right? Or is that a good reference for you since people of color happened not to be deemed people but property? Women had no rights, that was fine for you, right? It is too bad that Joe Wilson has become the story for our liberal news media. The President’s remarks were typical Obama speak–all talk–no specifics. I noted that he did have time to insert a stab at the “cable and radio” outlets. Let’s see down the road if illegals do end up getting insured. Also, anyone take into consideration the cost of starting up this plan–it will need staffing as any other government entity. Come on George, isn’t it time that the media start questioning this Administration. Your bias is showing.

Posted by: Shirley Puchalski | September 10, 2009, 9:32 am 9:32 am

Wilson displayed an utter disrespect for the “office” of the Presidency of the United States. You may not like what the person who holds this office has to say – but you respect the office itself. Wilson obviously has no self control – there are forums in which he can voice his objections – the presidential address is not one of them. I would be embarrassed to have him represent my state.

If, when I was in elementary school, the Principal had been heckled that way during an assembly, the miscreant would have been yanked out the room by his hair and frog-marched to dire punishment. But here we have an adult elected official who has, apparently, no sense of propriety or of the basic etiquette taught to first graders.
I don’t care what your political persuasion is or how much you hate the President and his attempt to reform health care. During an address to Congress, you are required to behave with dignity and restraint. You can yell about it afterwards all you like.

Posted by: Eleonora27 | September 10, 2009, 9:36 am 9:36 am

Wilson has a history———-Wilson, who was first elected to the house in 2001, is no stranger to oratory fireworks. He drew some attention in 2004 when he accused fellow representative Bob Filner (D-CA) of being, “vehemently anti-American.”
This is the problem with the right today. If it’s not what I want to hear it’s biased, if it’s not my version it’s a lie and if you don’t believe what I believe you’re UnAmerican.

I just checked South Carolina newspapers for their reporting on President Obama’s speech. It is almost nonexistent. I don’t mean that their coverage is negative, I mean it’s not there. The president gives a major address on a huge issue facing the nation, and South Carolina newspapers can’t manage to put it on the front page. I have family in South Carolina, I know there are good people there, but seriously, I have to say – WHAT AN EMBARRASSMENT this state is becoming. From their ridiculous governor, to their fine newspapers, to Joe Wilson. He deserves nothing but scorn, criticism, and to be voted out of office next year.

Posted by: Jon in Maryland | September 10, 2009, 9:37 am 9:37 am

Not appropriate behavior by Wilson, but this is just a distraction which has been a daily occurrence over the last few months on both sides. I think most of us have heard most of this speech too many times already and are tired of seeing Obama’s face and voice everyday. He just says too many lines that most people don’t believe. Let’s be honest Mr. President, this is going to cost a fortune. You are lying.

Mr. Wilson is ex-military. In fact he was close to becoming a general yet he claims that his “emotions” got the best of him. I wonder what would have happened had he displayed that same type of outburst before a superior officer in the military? His excuse is un-exceptable especially coming from someone who understands the importance of showing respect for the chain of command. His fellow Republicans should call for his resignation. This is the only way to stop his irresponsible action from further deteriorating the Republican base.

!!!! Get the FACTS on the supposed 47 million UNINSURED !!!!
- 6.4 million are the Medicaid undercount. These are people who are on one of two government health insurance programs, Medicaid or S-CHIP, but mistakenly (intentionally or not) tell the Census taker that they are uninsured
- 4.3 million are eligible for free or heavily subsidized government health insurance (again, either Medcaid or SCHIP), but have not yet signed up
- 9.3 million are non-citizens
- 10.1 million do not fit into any of the above categories, and they have incomes more than 3X the poverty level.
- Of the remaining 15.6 million uninsured, 5 million are adults between ages 18 and 34 and without kids.
- The remaining 10.6 million do not fit into any of the above categories, so they are:
* U.S. citizens;
* with income below 300% of poverty;
* not on or eligible for a taxpayer-subsidized health insurance program;
* and not a childless adult between age 18 and 34.

I’ve done some research on Joe Wilson from the Center for Responsive Politics. Here’s what I found.
When I examined the industries that contributed to Wilson’s political campaigns, Health professionals took 1st place. Joe Wilson also gets hefty campaign contributions from lobbyists, for-profit hospitals and nursing homes, pharmaceuticals/health products, insurance companies, and securities and investments. If I look at sectors, the for-profit health sector is Wilson’s biggest contributor. Individual corporations which contribute heavily to Wilson’s political campaigns include American Hospital Association and Blue Cross/Blue Shield.
So it’s little wonder that Wilson hates Obama because Obama poses a serious threat to Wilson’s source of campaign revenue.
I should also point out that the infant mortality rate in South Carolina is 3 times higher than the infant mortality rate of Sweden or France.* Apparently, Wilson would rather see babies die than treat on the “slippery slope to socialism.” It’s just too bad that babies cannot make political campaign contributions.
So when Wilson calls Obama a “liar,” my response is,
“Twinkle, twinkle, little star, what you say is what you are.”
Look again at the infant mortality rates of South Carolina, and you should agree that “liar” is indeed a charitable term for Joe Wilson.
*I got these stats from the 2009 CIA Fact Book and from Statesmaster.com. Feel free to research this information yourself. You will need to do some math.

What we have been seeing with the success of republicans in manipulating the message of Healthcare reform by villainizing our president is what happens when 20% or more of our citizens don’t even know Hawaii is a state in the USA. Uneducated people are easy to deceive….and control. Republicans know this and that’s why they don’t want our president to encourage school children to stay in school. I hope the citizen’s who are heckling our president wake up in time to realize that our president is in their corner. Republicans are on a mission to create a very wide gap between the wealthy and the poor. And they’ve had a lot of help to achieve it over the past 8 years. This will take us away from Democracy…not what President Obama is trying to do.

The best part of the whole speech was watching the side-show the Republicans put on – to the clear dismay of Nancy Pelosi who like a school girl proceeded to write notes to Joe Biden. Yes the yelling out was disrepectful but do we think everyone will now behave and play nice because Obama said so?

Where’s the outrage at the lies that cost 4000 American soldiers their lives, or maimed and injured over 30,000 more? Where? Hundreds of American families will never be whole again, but not a single outrage from these Republicans over all this. They are nothing but warmongers who don’t care over the loss of loved ones over lies. Yet these same lowlifes stand in the way of health care reform that would help the most unfortunate and financially depressed Americans and their familes. They only care about the profits of the insurance industry and pharmacutical corporations who stuff their pockets with millions over the moral and ethical obligation to represent people first. They are a disgusting bunch who would rather see Americans die from a lack of health care than to part with the bribes they receive from lobbyest. They have no shame collectively, and in particular this clown from SC Rep Wilson, who served up the role model of Republicans, being disrepectful not just to the President, but to the Office of the President, and the whole body of Congress. The reason Joe Wilson got so upset was because The President was actually leveling with the American people on what the Democrats plans are in terms of fixing our broken health care system. Republicans are the Status Quo! Republicans are the Insurance Industry’s bought and paid for thugs! Just look at the campaign contributions. Republicans are still in denial that they have left our economy just shy of bankruptcy and have bailed out the rich at the expense of the poor and middle class! People are losing their jobs in droves, and we have 46 million Americans with no health insurance, and untold numbers with inadequate health insurance. Even people with good jobs that provide health insurance are vulnerable to rescisions by the Insurance companies, if they were to get sick or injured. Are these lies? No! Does the United States spend twice as much on health care per capita as other industrialized nations and still leaves a sixth of its population with no health care coverage? Yes! Having health coverage in a recession is a good thing! The President isn’t lying by acknowledging that many Americans are hurting in this economy and that providing a public option for people that would not qualify for private insurance, or be able to afford private insurance, is the least our government can do for its people. Especially after eight years of Republican war mongering, deficit spending, no bid contracts, deregulation, no accountability, and tax cuts for the rich. Not to mention the bailouts! So if anyone is lying here it certainly isn’t our President.

Also, I’m from SC and can’t believe Rep. Wilson’s outburst. A little moaning and groaning during a President’s speech is to be expected, but to call him a liar is out of bounds.
If a Dem had called Bush a liar during one of his speeches the conservative nut jobs would be calling for his public hanging.

Posted by: jozy | September 10, 2009, 10:12 am 10:12 am

Joe Wilson’s outburst was crude and offensive, not because people don’t share his frustration or question the fraud perpetrated by illegal immigrants. It was rude because we should respect the office of the Presidency no matter who holds it. Whether you voted for Obama or not, millions of Americans did. We need to respect that. That is why there is bi-partisan condemnation for Joe Wilson’s outburst. It is a pleasant surprise. However, the idea that Democrats can somehow capitalize on his outburst is just as crude and partisan and ridiculous as calling the President a liar in a Joint Session of Congress. If Democrats try to paint all Republican critics of the President as mindless oafs who cannot control their outbursts, it will simply poison the well. Health Care Reform that is passed without bipartisan support is doomed to failure. If the political winds change, which historically has been the pattern, what was done will simply be undone creating more instability and confusion. If Obama truly believes in making long-term changes, he understands this. I have my doubts that Democrats in Congress understand this. I am really disappointed that ABC News would suggest that Democrats want to capitalize on this politically. I hope this is not coming from Democrats in Congress. I really hope they have more foresight.

Don’t blame Joe. He was simply expressing his frustration for the sake of the following people. Stephen J. Hensley-CEO-United Health. He had to take a pay cut from his $13.2 million in 07 to $3.2 million in 08. Michael McCallister-HUMANA CEO-dropped from $10.3 million in 07 to $1,017,308 in 08. Ronald A. Williams-CEO AETNA-$23 million in 07 to $24,300,112.00(an increase)in 08, but his stock options dropped to $194,496,797.00. The list goes on and on of health care CEO’s who are suffering. Can’t you people see how bad these folks are hurting and they need your help. Their lifestyle is being severely threatened. They have had to increase payments to lobbying firms and donations to political campaigns such as Joe’s, over 300% this year in order to field an all out attempt in preserving the status quo. They need our help desperately. I mean, my God, Edward Hanway-CEO-of CIGNA is struggling to make his mortgage payment on his $13 million dollar home in Cape May NJ. Right wingers unite, these folks desperately need our help.

What happened to FREEDOM OF SPEECH? Why should a Representative of Congress have to apologize when the Representative was expressing his rights written in the Constitution. Read the whole plan, it states that money will be required to be taken out of your paycheck whether you like it or not. What did Hitler do? He took away jobs from the police, teachers, scientists. What is happening right now? The same thing and is happening and we are loosing our freedoms. But most people are not seeing it. What are people going to do when we have to have permits to go from county to county or state to state? Wake up its WE THE PEOPLE NOT WE THE GOVERNMENT

Did he catch obama in a lie, lets say yes and no. Obama denies illegals will get free healthcare. BUt obama also knows this.1) hospitals are not allowed to ask or inquire about a persons citizenship status,2) A amendment giving hospitals access to a database to help check citizenship status was voted down, straight down party lines. I was frightened for the president when I heard this lunatic shrieking during Obama’s address. I was afraid the person who was shouting presented a clear and present danger to the man this country elected to office. I was afraid that whoever it was that was carrying on in such an utterly disturbed manner might have been carrying a weapon. I was very surprised this moron wasn’t taken into custody by the Secret Service.

“Way to go JOE”….Joe should be embarrassed that he acted like a hoodlum on the street instead of a dignified state representative. There’s a time and a place for everything and this was inappropriate on every level.
The same would apply to the Democrats if had they done something disrespectful as this.

I, as an American believe that it is our governments RESPONSIBLITY to take care of all Americans, from terrorist to health care….I hold them to that responsiblity at the polls– I was lied to at the polls when I voted for George W. Bush, TWICE! Evidently I’m a gambler- I gamble on Barack Obama’s health care reform this time around. We all know that what has been coming down the pipes in recent years is nothing but rubbish health care- good gravey people, give him a chance for change! I can’t image having to deal with the issues this president has had to endure from the moment he took office. **NOTE to all– I’m a “independant american”- not republican OR democrat!**

Posted by: Vivian | September 10, 2009, 10:30 am 10:30 am

Posted by: obamalies | September 10, 2009, 10:30 am 10:30 am

The inability of individuals to look beyond their own views and accord the president basic respect says much about the shameful state of civility in America.
Wilson isn’t a patriot he’s a boorish individual who broke every rule of decorum.
IA with the question many are asking. Where was this concern with billions being spent for eight years? The pretense that Obama is spending sooo much more than Bush is pure fiction.

Posted by: Kavan | September 10, 2009, 10:31 am 10:31 am

Though I feel that Obama’s speech was compelling in it’s scope, I also made the observation that, “I hear NOTHING about how he’s going to PAY for it!” – other than “not ONE dollar” from this program, or that program, etc, and that’s HARDLY comforting!
As for Wilson’s outburst, I felt it was out-of-bounds. I don’t care WHAT the deal is – this is the PRESIDENT addressing a JOINT SESSION of CONGRESS – how about a little decorum, there, Joe?
As far as Pelosi & Biden looking sternly/disapprovingly in Wilson’s direction? Laughable – Pelosi is phony and a liar herself. Biden? He was probably bent out of shape that he hadn’t plagiarized Wilson’t comment beforehand – he’s good at that!

Posted by: MoreNmore | September 10, 2009, 10:31 am 10:31 am

Try the truth: Well lets start by his taking over car companies. In case you haven’t read the Constitution…..government is not to be owners of business. Second, he would dearly love to silence some cable news networks and talk radio despite the fact that these outlets comprise a very small portion of the media. The “Fairness Doctrine” is something he is actively trying to reestablish although under a much different name. Third, Americans on whole have a living standard that is the envy of the world. Do you know that nobody starves in this nation. There might be “hungry” but nobody starves to death. Vast majority of those deemed “poor” in this country live ammazingly well….shelter, food, most have cars and TV’s and microwaves…..you want to see truly poor than go to some place and see what people deal with….no running water, no sanitation, little if any food, no health care of ANY kind….that’s poor. Forth, stop bitching about 2000. ALL media investigations into Florida came to the same conclusion…Bush won and that is from the media…not Bush supportters at all. Plus it says a lot when a Presidential candidate doesn’t even carry his own state….which if he had done it would have been a Gore win outright. Fifth, The Founding Fathers were not seen as “liberal”…they were seen as traitors. Sixth, the Patriot act hardly violated your rights…..unless of course you were calling Iraq or Afghanistan to talk to your brother. To monitor call traffic in time of war is a necessary evil. It would be stupid not too and by the way I am sure you would be the first in line to sue the government for not protecting you should it have come out after an attack that those doing the attack talked openly on the telephone.seventh, Obama NEVER stands up and says what is good about America….only apologizes for America. This nation literally saved the world twice last century, we’ve given 50 million people hope for a better life since the start of this century, it is America that people flock to because here there is freedom and a chance to have a better life….20 million Mexicans aren’t wrong on that. Eighth, Never in the history of this nation has ANY Prsident stood shoulder to shoulder in support of dictators as he has done over the Honduran situation. The former leader clearly violated their Constitution and an order from their Supreme Court. That court deemed him too dangerous to remain in power and directed the military to remove him. After which a new interim president was elected by their Congress. However, Obama would rahter stand with the Casto brothers and Chavez on this issue. probaly concerned the same thing might happen to him.

Joe Wilson is an embarrassment to the House of Representatives, the state of South Carolina, and the entire nation. But disturbingly, it fits into a larger picture. What was the big story from the town hall meetings of August? Shouting, intransigence, and disorder. Does ANYONE respect this kind of political discourse? It’s not civil disobedience, it’s certainly not reasonable debate – it’s CHILDISH ANTICS. From Sarah (quitter, embarrassment) Palin and her death panels, to Boehner and his sullen attempts to block needed legislation, to Joe Wilson and his adolescent assinine posturing (it’s wasn’t an emotional outburst – you don’t yell in the middle of the president’s speech to congress without thinking about it)it’s becoming overwhelmingly clear that the opponents of healthcare reform are malicious, immature, and wrong.

The money for the public option comes from the payments that are made into that insurance. It is not free for those who opt-in. There will still be monthly payments and deductibles, just a more affordable option. Now, as for me, I do not think it goes far enough. There will still be those who will not be able to even afford that and still not qualify for medicaid if the Republican Right have their way. We need true reform, not retoric.

How an outburst can trumph the presentation of a BAD health reform strategy is beyond me. When emotions outweight logic and reason, we are in deep trouble. Anyone who believes that adding drug addicts, HIV positive and diabetic, heart challenged obese people to the public health care roles will be cheap is delusional. “Sorry” when the plan tops $10 trillion in a few short years won’t cut it.

Posted by: Taxed2death58 | September 10, 2009, 10:51 am 10:51 am

Mr. Wilson, overly emphatic remark, simply reiterates how many, many people in this country feel about the direction of this administration, and the congress, in particular.
There seems to be no ethics, no honesty, and no morals, in our government, and that is of great concern to people, in believing anything the government says.
The emphasis on health care, rather than on jobs, at this particular time, is a glaring example of misplaced priorities, by Obama, in addressing the wrong issues at a time when millions are out of work.
No one can buy health care, if they have no income.

Posted by: Rick McDaniel | September 10, 2009, 10:52 am 10:52 am

Posted by: mojo | September 10, 2009, 10:53 am 10:53 am

Mr. Wilson’s outburst was just another reflection of one of our ugly faces of America. The best thing that has come out of Obama becoming president is that we know that racism in America is alive and well. It’s sad to say this but racism is where the true change must happen before we can truly become a great nation. Our children must learn that we are not Mexican-Americans, afro-Americans, Irish-Americans, republicans or democrats but instead we are USONIANS–people of the United States of America. Mexican,Irish, or Afro-Americans are dirty words that were created to keep us divided like cattle or sheep in little corrals so we can be easily controlled. It’s time that we USONIANS unite under one banner and end racism today so that our future children will have a great country to live in.

No, Joe was incorrect when he yelled “Liar” in response to the comment by the President that the bill does NOT allow covered for illegal aliens. I have read the section in the H.B. 3200 where it states that it is only for legal citizens. The problem evidently lies with enforcement issues, which is a different issue. But essentially that was an unwarranted and outrageously inappropriate outburst, which even the Republicans are embarrassed about.

To begin with Georgie boy was complicit in the international embarrassment of foisting the Clinton circus on us, and the only reason he’s not a politico himself is he’s not tall enough (that’s very important to democrats)so don’t go looking for impartiality in his reporting. And like it or not there’s a vast right wing bastion of “Americans” who actually outnumber any single group supporting the erosive/corrosive idiocy of the democrats, that have not nor will not accept Barack Obama as the president of America. Mr Obama is a likeable intelligent young man with some very good intentions, but he is completely unqualified for the position he (incredibly) finds himself in. Untill the gimmecrats accept that the duty of the president is to take care of the business of the government, and allow the “people” to take care of the business of the people, they’re going to find that only their shaky plurality allows them to continue their destructive ways. I and most other real Americans will support diversity as one of the pillars of this nation, but I cannot accept the developing chaos as a substitute for that diversity. The misdirection tactics used by the left in worming their agenda into place are slowly coming to light, and if we’re lucky a goodly number of them will be ejected from their lairs in near future elections. Otherwise we will soon cease to be the best hope of the free world.

People keep mentioning “its what I would have said if I were there.”
There is a reason our founding fathers instituted a representative democracy- so idiots like you & Joe Wilson don’t act like town hall tantrum morons in an official government setting. I include myself in this, b/c if I was there I would have made him(and you) eat that stupid sign to shut him up.
People also keep mentioning the supposed heckling of Bush, but there is a world of difference between hissing & similar audience sounds made by a chorus of people (like the Repugs did last night- the mass crowd NO’s right before that outburst.) Those are typically considered proper decorum for a Congressional address in our country or any country, but the outbursts such as ‘You lie!’ or ‘Ha!’ Totally over the top. Everyone knows it- funny you do not. These single outbursts are punishable actions by Congress & this may very well happen to Wilson.
For the record, John McCain & other Republicans have stated that those outbursts were disrepectful too. Your new ‘hero’ is a pariah to all but the town hall tantrum crowd, even to congressional Republicans. He’s a hero to only morons.
McCain was also just on the Today show and told Matt Lauer that the statement President Obama made about illegal aliens was true. I guess McCain is a liar too.

Please someone explain to our fellow Americans that our health care system is ranked at about 24th in the world on par with Slovakia, and that we pay more than twice the amount of most of our closest allies who are further up that list. Even conservative thinkers should be able to work out the simple need to get more for our money and guarantee that your insurance company won’t deny you coverage because you’re sick! We currently have a poorly performing health care system, and sometimes the smart person looks at what’s working for somebody else instead of mistaking ignorance for pride.

Extremely poor behavior should not be encouraged. It’s fine to disagree with the President but that’s very different than childish and disrespectful name-calling.
I hope the Republican Party censures Rep. Wilson for his kindergarden behavior.

I would be embarrassed to be a Republican at this point in time, after the last week of petty opposition to anything Obama wants to do, including encouraging our youth to be the best they can be and now the inappropriate outburst of the Redneck rep from SC…how unpatriotic and unChristian-like! Again…nananana, nananana…hey, hey, hey Goodbye(Republican party).

Ahh, South Carolina. Same state with a governor who couldn’t keep his zipper or mouth shut. Didn’t Jon Stewart do a segment on how South Carolina’s politicians were a boon to comedians and satarists – how for a state with it’s population size they were far out-distancing any other in their faux pas? Well, no surprise. South Carolina has turned into a state of loonies and basically one big joke.

How could Obama LIE about something that has not yet happened?
The President said that health care reform would not mean insuring illegal immigrants. No one called accurately call him a liar until that happens, which it has not.
This is yet more of the Republicans’ crazy talk, meant to rile up the public, even if they have to resort to inaccuracies–or in some cases like the stories about “death panels,” just LIE about what was in the bill.

Posted by: The Left is Right | September 10, 2009, 11:08 am 11:08 am

Obama is a stupid liar!!
Get the trail lawyers out of your pockets and we could put a cap on ridiculous malpractice suits looking to make a quick buck and passing on the costs to all of us!! It would also prevent doctors from having to order so many tests and driving up the costs just to avoid stupid , frivolous lawsuits. We have only heard about that recently from liar Obama’s mouth recently—what does he care– he has good health insurance that you would never have in the garbage public option that is dead thankfully, Thank you to moderate Democrats and Republicans who have some basic sense and are fiscally responsible to us in this generation and our children’s generation. Oh yes liar Obama what about when you want to grant Amnesty to illegals and grant 11-20 million more people non taxing paying people a crack at the garbage “public option” . I am a physician; I have actually toiled in this system. I trained at a large referral center near the Canadian Border. Canadian nurses would come to work at our hospital in the US because it paid more and the standard of care was so much higher. They would always disparage and ridicule their health system for being terrible, inefficient and dangerous. Month waiting times for simple procedures I would provide my patients immediately were common. I would acutally get Canadian citizens flown to our hospital for life saving procedures such as cardiac catheterization for an acute myocardial infarction (or acute heart attack) . This is such a sad testament to their system-that someone dying in their own country has to be flown to our country, to our health system to save their life acutely. Their health system is that bad and the Canadian RN’s said it is terrible and costs them them equivalent of $400/ month in taxes! Insane. The ideas the Republicans and moderate Democrats have proposed make sense. Have people be able to go across state borders to purchase a policy and reduce malpractice insurance and cap malpractice awards- or then liars Obama, Emanuel and the idiotic left Democratic fringe will not only have a fiscal crisis, but a shortage of doctors as the “next crisis”.

Posted by: jaketip | September 10, 2009, 11:08 am 11:08 am

It was disrespectful to say the least.
It was a fine speech from Obama and I did lay out details as to his specific plan and how he plans on paying for it. This is an issue that needs to be void of all political ideology. I agree with him that if Conservatives have a problem with it, voice your concerns. If these concerns are legitilate and are in the best interest of the American people than they will be heard.
But when Conservatives start spewing out things like Obama is a liar, and he is a fraud without any sort of evidence than America looks like they are on a witch hunt.
Many of you have posted similar things with no facts. Shame on you. Obama has done more in 4 or 5 months than Bush did prior to 9/11.
We should be proud of a President who gets the job done.

Posted by: Andrew Ogilvie | September 10, 2009, 11:10 am 11:10 am

Congressman Wilson was merely expressing the truth. The President’s public option plan, whether intentional or not, will cover all “people.” Unless his administration classifies illegal aliens as “non-people” they will be covered. The President also talks about 46 million “Americans” are without healthcare coverage. At least 7 million of those are illegal aliens. Most people are taught to call out those who tell half-truths or outright lies. Unfortunately, just as in North Korea or Iran, it appears no one can ever call the President out when he is not speaking the truth. Remember, he is our “Dear Leader” and no matter how many times he changes his views, opinions, etc., he is always right.
There is a time and place for everything. The ballot box will be the proper time and place for all Americans to show their disapproval for this and the many other government take-overs.

Try the truth: “When did the President stand “shoulder to shoulder” with Chaves and the Castro brothers?” I am not suprised you haven’t heard this since it’s stuff the MSM doesn’t put out much but he has called for the Former President to be returned to power, repeatedly, and his administration has stopped sending what aid we were sending. Your rant says a lot more about you than you realize. Clearly you are the one obessed with race. As far as the collection of information as emails and phone records and calls it still goes on…Obama hasn’t (and won’t) do anything to change that. You are right…he will use it against us. Tell me….how upset were you when he asked people to forward emails regarding “misinformation”. Were you just as appalled at that as the Patriot Act. And BTW, using a White House address in such a fashion does in fact violate the law. Also I am quite a bit above “trailer park”…..I’m one of those that you wish to steal my money from. Money that “I” worked for and money you have no right to have access to. As far as laid off car workers….guess what, that state has been run by the Dems and unions forever….it should give you a major clue on how those policies work….they don’t. As for point for point issue….you didn’t because you can’t.

The definition of a heckler is a person who shouts a disparaging comment at a performance or event, or interrupting set-piece speeches, for example at a political meeting, with intent to disturb its performers or participants.
This is what Joe Wilson & the other individual disruptors did last night. The loud chorus of ‘No’ from the Republicans as a whole, or from Dems at Bush previously is NOT heckling.
Stop comparing the two! They are not the same as evidenced by the reaction from MOST (republicans included) in the Congress.

Posted by: TX | September 10, 2009, 11:16 am 11:16 am

I find Mr. Wilson’s behavior to be atrocious. Remember all the crazies who stood in line to see John McCain and Sarah Palin. Remember how their behavior drove so many people to get out and vote because we saw how the loons were behaving and didn’t want them to be involved with running our country. Imagine what this type of republican behavior will do to ignite the democrats and independents. Keep it up Wilson and others. You are sure to make this a one party country very soon.

Now rewind to all the times in which the Democrats heckled and hissed GW Bush when he gave a State of the Union Speech. Did any of them apologize? ….. and I did not hear a word of criticism from YOU, Jozy, did I?
And what about all the times the Democrats turned a funeral into a political rally? At the funeral for Paul Welstone the Democrats held their rally and shouted anti-Republican slogans in the same room where the coffin was. Does this mean the “rats” on the Democratic side were “running themselves off the ship?”

Bush started an unnecesary war under false pretense.
hmmmmm…which is deserving of being boo’d or called a liar?
I think Bush got off rather easily. I think its ironic at all the protests against Obama when Bush was the one who caused most of the troubles.
You call a man a hero for yelling at our president? How misguided are people these days?

How about Obama calling anyone who disagrees with him…regardless of fact that HE IS A LIAR…IN HIS SPEECH no less.
I don’t think Joe should have apologized. Obama’s blatant disregard of the well being of the citizens of this country…AND our children has earned him the disrespect he now gets.

Healthcare reform can help to reduce the inequalities in our healthcare system drastically. As someone who helps people in health care crisis, I’m all too familiar with the heartbreaking stories of those who do not have healthcare or are denied healthcare services by their insurance company. Some of my clients develop cancer and are then dropped by their health insurance companies. They do not qualify for Medicaid and thus, they are forced to go without lifesaving treatment. Others have developed Multiple Sclerosis and lose their jobs and cannot get health insurance because they are uninsurable and cannot afford the premiums. While you may not be one of these heartbreaking stories, there are other reasons why you should support reform:
• Fairness: No hardworking American should be denied access to quality affordable health care. The majority of my clients are working families who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but whose jobs do not offer health insurance.
• Cost to personal finances: Healthcare insurance premiums are rising rapidly while wages are remaining stagnant. The average family premium will rise from 1,550 to 19,709 by 2019 in Tennessee without healthcare reform. Hardworking American families cannot bear this cost.
• Cost to business owners: Nearly 9 in 10 small business owners think health care should be available and affordable to everyone. Most small businesses don’t provide health coverage to employees—not because they don’t want to, but because they cannot afford to.
• American Advancement: In 2007, 11% of American children were uninsured. If, like most other industrialized societies do, one views children as a precious natural resource that will drive the nation’s economic future, then one might wish to ensure that every American child can get health insurance and proper health care. This would be a wise investment in America’s future.
• World Health Ranking: The World Health Organization ranked the US’ healthcare system 37th in the world based on citizens’ health care status, the responsiveness of its system, and fairness in financing.
• Morality: In the New Testament, Jesus calls his followers to “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31). In order to be consistent with our Christian heritage, we shouldn’t let our fellow working Americans, our “neighbors,” go without coverage simply because their place of employment doesn’t offer coverage or because they have a pre-existing condition.

Posted by: hlthcre4evryamerican | September 10, 2009, 11:22 am 11:22 am

Actually, Obama did not lie. The problem is there are loop-holes in the proposed health care law. The Republicans attempted to close the loop holes that would actually prevent many American Citizens from qualifying for health care coverage. Given such, the Democrats rejected the Republicans suggested changes. The Dems thought it much more important that all Americans citizens be covered.

They will not back anything that President Obama tries to accomplish because they feel they need to undermine him at every turn in order to get back their power. It is all about power and they want it back badly. Why people slavishly follow this party, when it is obvious that the Republican party doesn’t have any interest in helping them or making thier lives better in any way, just astounds me.
The rules say nothing about saying “no” booing, or hissing, or other such behavior.
What Joe Wilson said was a violation of their own decorum rules.
Plain and simple- whether he’s your ‘hero’ or not.

I usually cross party lines to vote for the best candidate. I have both been inspired and disappointed by President Obama. But, what I have seen from the GOP since the election crowds to town halls and now the speech last night has been horrendously disgusting. What is the last good GOP idea? Why can’t we get the best of both parties instead of one or the other? What the GOP has sadly become is an extension of Fox News and Talk Radio which represents a small section of American culture. Maybe the GOP should suffer a few more elections before they understand how bad they look to the average American. The democrats may fail, but I would be very reluctant to vote for any GOP member as of now.

So Obama didn’t start the mud slinging during the speech when he demeaned and discarded genuine concerns of a significant segment of the population by calling them liars? It is naive to say that illegal aliens will not receive medical services. They will get mandated coverage because all employers are required to provide insurance or buy into a coop or public option. The employer or insurance company cannot legally distinguish who is legal or has fraudulent papers.

Joe Wilson’s comments were disrespectful and degrading to our nations president as well as each and every citizen in America. I understand that emotions can overtake us at times, but to show that much disrespect is appauling! I would be furious if he were my representative in the congress! We punish our youth for such behavior, yet allow this adult, holding such a high position in our nations congress, to spout off like a 5 year old without any consequences at all! Simply, “I’m sorry”! What a joke! Its no wonder congress cannot find a solution to our nations health care, if he is any indication of how they are “discussing” the issues! At least i have the confidance of knowing that my states representative acts like a proud American and respects his states citizens, and The President of our nation enough to “represent” them in a positive and respectful light!

This is what I do not understand: A major battle cry of health care reform opponents was the imaginary “death panel,” which, according to the overactive imagination of the opponents, would determine how much, if any, health care the elderly and disabled are entitled to.
On the other hand, the same opponents apparently don’t care about the millions of people (a group to which I have belonged) who have suffered significant health problems without the benefit of any insurance and have faced financial catastrophe, or even worse, no desperately needed health care, because they do not have health insurance.
If any of you health care reform opponents can explain this apparent irony to me, I would be very happy to listen.

Joe Wilson “ain’t no” patriot. He is from a southern state, South Carolina, that began the Civil War in 1860s. Please he ain’t civilized and certainly isn’t a patriot. He is less than for shouting out in the United States of America Congressional Chamber of Law. Yes, good Patriots follow the law, and Joe Wilson doesn’t like authority. Let’s guess, is he an abusive person? Any student in schools who would have done this would have been suspended from school, paid fines, and would have to do community service, possibly spend time in juvey. Well hello! Joe Wilson is NOT a good patriot. He failed and he is going to be uprooted from his seat in November 2009. What is it with Republican politicians in South Carolina. Governor pretends to be religious and has a mistress, uses state funds for personal use, and Joe Wilson is abusive in congress. Concerning, very. Make Republicans jobless in November 2009. I wonder if we are missing the big picture. If we don’t do something to stop jobs leaving this country we won’t need to worry about health care, social security or medicare because there won’t be anyone to pay into any of these. Why isn’t congress developing a health care plan and the American people voting on it? The final decision should be made by the American people not the president, special interest groups or congress. Washington has forgotten who works for who. It’s time to take that back.

Posted by: CDA | September 10, 2009, 11:43 am 11:43 am

My friends in South Carolina are simply appalled that, while struggling to cope with a Republican governor who lied about his whereabouts while on extramarital booty calls to Argentina, often paid for on the taxpayer dime, they are now having to contend with the shame brought forth by an disrepectful traitor in the Congress. And by the looks of those around him, Republican and Democrat alike, his vile outburst was wholly unprecedented. It sounds like there is a need for a shake-up in South Carolina to get rid of some of the ignorance, immorality and corruption there.

TX_MBell | Sep 10, 2009 11:40:42 AM—So Obama didn’t start the mud slinging during the speech when he demeaned and discarded genuine concerns of a significant segment of the population by calling them liars?***** What they are spouting is lies! Why is that so hard for you to understand? Do you have basic comprehension? “It is naive to say that illegal aliens will not receive medical services” — Nobody said they wouldn’t, we treat dogs that have been found on the street, you don’t want to treat a human? They just won’t be covered by the insurance plan, get it yet?

Republican Party has stoop to a very new low, and all of their morals and business manners have gone down into the sewer. Joe Wilson proved how low the Republican Party has gone down in moral behaviors. Shame on Republicans — brats, out of control, hateful, mean spirited, bad behaviors in public, and socially inept. Obama’s speech was flawless. Great articulation of the plan. The FEAR being used by the right wingers was clearly front and center last night with the President. Mr. President, I would now mention names of who is stone walling the plan and spreading the lies. Yes, mention the names now. Lets see if the rats will continue to come out then. God bless America. We need universal health care; that’s a give me.

Rude behavior is never acceptable. In law schools all over the country, one of the first lessons taught is how to agreeably disagree, and how to debate or argue a case with respect to your opponent. Rep. Joe Wilson showed DEPLORABLE behavior last night. He does not deserve his congressional seat; he is NO gentleman.

This character exemplifies the republican party…angry, ignorant, and almost all caucasian. This outburst is a perfect example of why the republican party has almost no support among Americans under 35 years of age. My late father – a staunch republican – would not recognize the party now. You can’t pick and choose a few to blame, when all are guilty, as you claim. But then it appears that some of you are about all “but” the truth.

Sad part is that everyone throwing around the “racism” mantra may be wrong. In the 90s my coworker’s Executive VP husband had the same feelings about Clinton. He ranted against Clinton day and night, calling him a socialist, marxist and Hitler’s spawn. He literally made himself sick. He bought the Countdown to Clinton leaving office Calendar both terms. When Clinton couldn’t get health reform passed, this man was beside himself with joy. He proudly called himself an “angry white man” and wanted Clinton destroyed at all cost.
Flash forward to 2009 and he is now a former Executive VP in his late 50s and has only found temporary consulting positions for the past 5 years. No health insurance since COBRA expired and he can’t get an individual policy because of the pre-existing conditions. While he probably stills gets a decent salary (100k) it is nowhere near what he pulled in during the 90s. Guess who now agrees that we need health care reform? Even with his decent salary, paying out of pocket for a heart attack, high blood pressure and skin cancer have put him in bankruptcy.
He and my coworker divorced, he remarried a much younger woman mainly so that he could get on her group insurance…she lost her job because of outsourcing to India and now he is back in the same situation since COBRA ended 4 months ago and he didn’t timely find another policy.
If we can find a way to pay for wars and rebuilding other countries, we can find a way to have decent affordable healthcare for every American. There will always be illegals and other welfare types taking advantage of our resources, however, that shouldn’t be a deterrant to everyone having access to good healthcare.
Before I am labeled a socialist, note that affordable is not synonymous with free.

The time has come to place a bit in the mouth of corporate America, and pull them up…Or a noose around their necks and hang them. The lack of courage that congress shows on this issue is NOT shocking or astounding, given the fact that they ALL…(including Mr. Obama) have lined their pockets, and filled their coffers with corporate contributions.
This is not rocket science. Corporations make their profits on the backs of the working class. It MUST end.

Posted by: Tony Petrone | September 10, 2009, 12:12 pm 12:12 pm

I thought the Pres gave a very good speech on the subject of health care reform. He addressed all of the hysteria generated by the insurance and pharmaceutical industries via their wholly owned republican robots, and went on to outline the methods by which the plan would be funded. Notice that he said that he would not sign a bill that would increase the deficit. Notice also that he collided head-on with the nincompoops who made the ridiculous charge about elderly death panels, but, more importantly, notice that he also stated that illegal immigrants would receive no coverage. He also proclaimed that he would fix the really screwed up medicare prescription drug benefit that his predecessor often touted as being such a wonderful thing that the GOP had done under his guidance.
I suppose that the insurance industry will begin to attack the proposal on the basis of detailed information regarding how the plan will be payed for. For those that embrace the idea of attempting to defeat the effort on this basis, I would say that nobody seems to care too much about the details of other spending measures as, for example, the huge expenditures for the federal government and the military. Let’s hear these nincompoops start shouting about the high cost of these programs and the details as to how they’re to be paid for and maybe, just maybe, we could believe them when it comes to an effort designed to benefit humanity as opposed to destroying it.

They screwed the existing medical insurance through ERISA to protect and eliminate any over site on their lobbied insurers so congress and the insurance companies are above the law. Now they want create a new system with their track record. Obama is a poster boy for mismanagement at it’s best and the hell with the American voter and middle class. Thye all ought to be fired.

Posted by: bduce | September 10, 2009, 12:14 pm 12:14 pm

Try this truth. Obama is making a promise that he won’t let the proposed system run a muck. How can that be when he and the bureaucrats putting this together will not hold office long enough to assure their promises over the long term. Even good kings end up having successors that put their self interest above the people. I am for health care for everyone. But don’t white-wash the risk or fail to respectfully address the people’s inconvenient concerns. Illegal aliens and anyone without health care that genuinely needs it should get it. Saying that illegal aliens will not receive a dime of health care is a white-washed lie. So Joe’s outburst is representative of too many that are not getting honest answers to their concerns and are getting rhetoric that defies common sense.

I am sorry that this representative made a fool of himself, but it shows how inconsiderate people are. If you do not like the president’s plan, then as a congress person, I expect you to try to work on a sensible alternative. Instead, what did he do, he acted like a five year old. Instead of yelling out, and in fact was booed by his own party, get to your office and work on crafting a bill. You may have disagreements, but as a member of congress, you should at least respect the office of President. No wonder the GOP has become a very marginalized and regional party. the President has time and again reached across and even in his speech said his door is open to those members from either side of the aisle with valid approaches. I guess we expect too much from the GOP to say “let’s see where we can work with the President”. There are simply people out there who will never like anything our President does, so to them, oh well, that is a mighty christian attitude to have. This congressman is a joke!

The section of the speech that Joe Wilson had his outburst on was about illegal immigrants and health reform. In fact the portion of Obama’s speech was fact checked, I saw a fact check of that part on Yahoo’s front news page this morning and Obama did NOT lie according to them. There is specific language in the health reform bill in the House to prevent illegal immigrants from benefitting from this legislation. So Joe Wilson, who should know this or is willfully ignorant of the bill, was in fact wrong to shout out you lie at this part of the speech.

There is no provision to allow illegal aliens to receive benefits. There is no provision to prevent it. Laws are not passed to allow something. They are passed to prevent something. Remember the bonuses to rich executives? It didn’t happen because it was allowed, it happened because it wasn’t disallowed. Unless provisions are made to restrict care to American citizens and provide for enforcement of such rules there is no way to keep illegal aliens and other non-citizens from seeking care at the expense of American taxpayers. Either Obama lied or he doesn’t know any more about this bill than he did his “stimulus package” a.k.a. ‘Pork Bill’. Either way is bad.
Lie or ignorance, like him or not, President Obama is a lousy president but he’s our lousy president. As president he deserves that respect and courtesy. Not only did Wilson insult President Obama but also the office and in so doing insulted all of us. Time to resign Congressman. Go find something you’re mature enough to handle.

Calling the President a liar is a desperate act by a desperate man who lacks the respect of his office and that of the President of the United States. Disagreement with policy is fine. But doing so in acrimony and disrecpect is heartbreaking. Obama made a good point in Ted Kennedy being able to reach out in compromise with members of other beliefs and opinions. To Susie: I think somebody is having a tad bit of town hall withdrawl. Do yourself a favor & shut up the next time someone more knowledge than you is talking- which is probably most people.
“I remember Pres. Bush being booed from just about all of the democrats. I’m pretty sure it was during the State of the Union address. Correct me if I’m wrong. How is this different???”
Indeed both are rude, although it is different b/c heckling(individual outbursts & name-calling) violates the Republicans own rules on decorum & is subject to censure & punishment, although considering the tone of the Repugs towards the President these days, it probably won’t happen.
Individual outbursts within most official political settings, especially of the name-calling variety is considered much ruder than booing or hissing or saying ‘no’ in mass- as happens at most Presidential or political speeches & is directed at WHAT someone is saying, rather than at their person or character. There IS a difference & that should be pretty clear if you look at it objectively & rationally.

I don’t even live in South Carolina, but I just finished contributing $100.00 to Rob Miller. Wilson is representing a heavily Republican district, so it’s an uphill battle, but one must remember that Mark Sanford is still the Governor. When you pair the two, the Republicans might have issues in that state, unless the state Repubs can mount an impeachment of Sanford next year. No matter what happens, it’s going to get messy, and South Carolina, might turn blue if they’re not careful. I’m sure the Obama money machine (and it’s very powerful trust me) will turn on the spigots and go to work after that outburst. Democracy, disagreement, and ideological differences are healthy, but the lack of respect for the office of the Presidency, just because it happens to be inhabited by an African-American doesn’t pass the smell test in my opinion. South Carolina might be “in play” now.

United Health Care insurance a full of liars. They spent 11 months to pay for my prevention and wellness physical checkup in 2001. It was in my insurance plan to have one physical a year, and they took 11 months to pay the bill. That’s insane and they lied since the insurance booklet explicitly stated one wellness and prevention physical check per individual under premiums per year. Liars, Liars, Liars. They finally paid when I called the clinic CEO and told him what was going on. He contacted the CEO of United Health Care and got the medical claims paid the very next work day. Don’t accept abuse from insurance companies and its fraud if they print it in booklets then don’t honor their own black and white print. That’s fraud. Make insurance companies responsible and held accountable. Make them live up to their own terms and conditions otherwise, don’t give premiums to UHC. Stay away and bankrupt insurance companies. Make insurance companies close down if they continue fraudulant practices. If they refuse to change, then close them down. Make all insurance companies tow the line. Either tow the line or be put out of business — that’s the message from the American people. If insurance companies don’t tow the line, we Americans will put you insurance companies out of business — no more profits, no more commissions, no more bonuses, no more investments, no more Wall Street, no more anything! Insurance companies you decide — lawfully run businesses or be put out of business. Behave or go to prison.

Let’s just ignore the fact that Congressman Joe Wilson was disrespectful, childish and stupid. And let’s just ignore the fact that Dubya blatantly lied to the American people on multiple occasions. The more important point is that conservatives in general (and Republicans in particular) have no ideas, no plans and no vision for the future of America. Why? Because, as always, conservatives are mired in the past and some hopeless romanticism with the “good ole days.”

Condemn Joe Miller all you want, but two facts remain:
1.Obama did lie and that wasn’t even the biggest lie of the evening. Read the fact check summaries.
2.Obama said nothing to alter or the health care mess. He offered noting new of substance. He totally failed to take ownership and responsibility for the health Care legislation. Zero leadership.
It’s a pathetic commentary when the best talking point Dems and their media shills can advance in the health care debate is Joe Miller.

It is so easy to pick out comments from the GOP base. These people are so easy to dupe! The senate has been corrupted by the HMO’s and pharmaceutical companies, who donate generously to their campaigns. It is outright bribery! Politicians and news agencies alike talk about paid off politicians, like, it is another day in the park for the senate. Guys like Limbaugh and O’Reilly make stuff up to hurl towards their ratings makers, who is, the Republican base. They throw in the word “patriotism” and these people lap it up like it is gospel. The Democrats should have been yelling at Bush during his addresses and maybe he wouldn’t have brought down the US and subsequently the entire planet. Health care for everyone is so unpatriotic, what is Obama thinking? The Republicans take bribes from HMOs and then tell Rush and Bill to tell the base that healthcare for everyone is Fascist and unpatriotic and these people buy it. Democrats take bribes as well! Until Americans stand up and refuse to allow their representatives to take money from corporations, the corruption will never stop, in fact, it will continue to get worse. I don’t know how you can be elected into office, by the people, and then turn around and work only for corporations is astounding at the very least!

All rhetoric and no specifics..again. More speeches…more drama…nothing, absolutely nothing on direct Q/A from the town hall meetings. Everything sanitized.
Direct challenges God forbid should have been made to the DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP. Pelosi and Reid have had a long time to get it right…she’s too busy finding planes to fly…he’s too busy with about faces for 6 years and counting.
So Pres. Obama baffles America with more BS. Tell ‘em one thing and I’ll do what ever I want..who cares…we are in power and will squash you like a bug if you get in our way. We know best how to do everything… suck more taxpayer money for our cronies.
2010 is coming sooner than they expect.

The President’s speech was very informative last night. He appears to have all citizens in mind and a plan to help those who are in need. Why are there so many people who can not understand his statement on retention of their current coverage? Health Care may not be the real issue!! To barefootboy, you should do a spelling check before calling someone a liar and if he is a fruitcake(which has many rich ingredients)he’s a smart one!!

You are darn right Ellis. My relatives who live in SC are outraged, and they want their votes back. They want Joe Wilson to step down and be held accountable for his behavior last night. SC is now the laughing stock of the world. My relatives are truly outraged and angry that one of their own made SC look abusive, disrespectful, and out of control. Joe Wilson, step down now. Clean up America. Make Republicans jobless. Vote Democrats.

Obama absolutely did lie when he said illegal aliens will not receive free healthcare. To me it sounded like illegals will be the ones receiving the best deal on healthcare, they’ll get to keep using our emergency rooms free of charge while everyone else either has to sign up or pay a fee. If it is true that illegals won’t be receiving free healthcare anymore does this mean they’ll have to go back to Mexico? We all know Obama doesn’t want that to happen. He wants to legalize them so they’ll vote for him in the next election.

Thank-You Joe Wilson for calling Obama a liar. That he is. Illegals will be covered. They will not have to pay the health care plan tax nor will they be fined for not having health care. They will be treated anytime at an emergency room and we will pay for it. On July 30th the Dems voted down a bill by Rep. Nathan Deal that would require health care providers to use a verification program for health care services Their identity as to their legal status will not be questioned as it would be in other countries or in their own country. So by voting this down Democrats know very well illegals will be covered. LIARS! Debate Obama on this. Let’s bring this issue to the forefront. Thanks, Joe Wilson! Pay dirt, indeed! We’ll see!

And we ALL know….Republicans NEVER lie…! If Barack Obama’s Presidency has been nothing but a “lie” then all presidents lie and our political system is fundamentally flawed. Mr.Wilson opened his mouth to such an extent last night that he may as well jump to the other side of the aisle. This isn’t the British House of Commons where shouting out your opinion is common and accepted practice. Get elected in England Mr. Wilson where this kind of behavior is acceptable. Otherwise, respect our president. Lord knows, we’re still cleaning up the Republicans mess from the past eight years. No one mentions the mistakes from the previous administration that mr. “First, if you are among the hundreds of millions of Americans who already have health insurance through your job, Medicare, Medicaid, or the VA, nothing in this plan will require you or your employer to change the coverage or the doctor you have. Let me repeat this: nothing in our plan requires you to change what you have.”—–
If they go with the public option that is a lie, refuted by everyone from the WSJ to Newsweek to Time to IBD.

“and 95% of all small businesses, because of their size and narrow profit margin, would be exempt from these requirements.”

I am saddened by the name calling that took place last night during the President’s speech. Most of the President’s past have been booed but not heckled check the videos. We have been lied to before by President Bush. Why do the Repulicans and Democratics HATE each other? It’s not accomplishing anything at all. All it shows is that Americans will never move forward. If your not hitting home runs we don’t want you around. I work in the Human Resources Dept. and I see what the skyrocketing cost has done to people. It’s a crying shame that we are a large country that can not and will not get are crap together and try and see this through. I’m broke already and my company has no plans in giving us raises this year to help off set the high cost of benefits. I bring home $1200.00/bi-weekly after the increase in benefits this year it will only be $950.00 (which is what I pay monthly in rent). You must know that the person who is only bringing home $850.00 will be hit and God help you if you have a family. If I only had a choice. We have got to stop tearing each other apart and work together. Have people forgotten that we are still paying on a War that was started over false information. Have people forgotten that we are trying to bring business back to America instead of outsourcing it to other countries. We gave President Bush a chance and think we should do the same for President Obama. Why must we HATE everything. Let me say one other thing about socialism it’s been in this country for some time now. It’s not an overnight light bulb going off. The Patriot Act is a prime explain of Government being able to get into your banking records, telephone records even survillence on the American public just look at the street lights. I believe you will find a camera on them. The media in this country is bought and sold on a daily basis. We must work together for a solutions tearing each other apart only shows the uglyness that still lies deep in America.

Seems to me that the republican followers are like beaten dogs, ready to lashout at anyone taking money from their pockets.

Why is it OK for Obama to indirectly call Sarah Palin a liar during his speech, but when it is yelled during his speech that he is a liar, everybody freaks out. But, that’s besides the point….
Fact Check seems to indicate that Obama’s nose actually is a bit longer this morning than last night, but he always maintained an ability to spin his statements to be “true” under the proper conditions. This “spin point” seems to be the location where disagreement exists on healthcare.
Obama says things like abortion aren’t in the bill, but unless it is excluded, it MUST be included. It is a legal medical procedure, so how could the government exclude something that they have chosen to make legal.
Obama says that “Death Panels” don’t exist, and people making this claim are liars. Well, maybe not by that name, but people that make choices on what “will and won’t be paid”, are making “life and death decisions”. Hence the name “Death Panels”. Granted, it is incendiary language, but it is intended to be.
Furthermore towards this point of “Death Panels”, when the government makes arbitrary claims that they will cut $500 Billion fro Medicare without telling us “How”, those of us that distrust government get nervous. When they additionally plan to pay for “end of life counseling”, we get even more nervous.
Bottom line that I live by is “Love your country, but never trust your government”.

Running a country is not the same as a football team, where if you do not win you lose. Too many attorneys think win or lose rather than solutions. Kathy, There have always been displays of intent during congressional speeches. Standing, sitting, not clapping, guffaws. But for a member of congress to so disrespectfully scream at the POTUS, liar, is grounds for removal from the premises. He should have been called out and thrown out. Because , whatthe president was saying was true. The bill does not cover illegals. John McCain said as much on GMA this morning. Such disrespect, I can’t help wonder where it truly stems from. Racism or lobbyists vying for failure. Not to mention the outrageous speculation about the president’s speech to school children. Never has a president been denied a speech to school kids. I’ve never seen so much disrespect for the president of the United States and the highest office of the land. It’s disgusting and shameful.

I am so ready for mid term elections. I bet you think I’m a Republican but Hell no. I am a proud LIBERAL democrat and so badly want to show the wacko right that there way off course and so says ONCE AGAIN the real majority of America. You want to really scare a “SKY IS FALLING CHICKEN LITTLE REPUBLICAN” Do this create 3 healthcare bills The first one can be crafted by the right wing intellectual leader and moral standard holder Rush Limpballs with help a little bit by Fox News for just the right truth spin because TRUTH is all FOX news really cares about. The second bill can be crafted by the sellout blue dork democrats that gives the insurance lobby everything they want without being to obvious about it but basically the status quo and the third bill can be crafted by the progressive democrats that would create a one payer system and get rid of the blood sucking leaches we all know as the health insurance industry and the evil federal government would control it. That would be the same evil government that controls our military. This would be the same military that Republicans have no problem spending trillions of dollars on. Isn’t it funny only in America its patriotic to spend more money to kill somebody in a foreign land than to heal somebody in our own land. Back to what I propose take these 3 bills and hold a special national election over 2 weeks. This should give enough Republicans the chance to pry there short wave radio head sets from there ears and crawl out of there bomb shelters to cast there ever so patriotic vote and maybe the rest can get a portable TV so they don’t miss a single minute of fox news as missing fox’s news for more than a few minutes causes serious disorientation to a Republican. The first week can be the vote on all three bills and the top two most vote getting bills face off in the second week. Don’t worry Republicans you wont miss too much short wave radio or fox news because your vote wont be required after week one as The right wing plan goes down in flames. I bet you wouldn’t believe I was a voting Republican for the majority of my voting life …..Naaaa that would just be some conspiracy put forth by the evil government…LOL

There is an element of convenient fantasy as well in Obama’s health care statements to date. We are going to save money by spending money. We are going to solve our fiscal problems with a program that will increase the national debt by $1 trillion over a decade. We are going to guarantee you can keep your current insurance with a bill that encourages your employer to stop offering it.
The list goes on. We are going to improve health care for seniors by cutting $500 billion from Medicare. We aren’t going to insure illegal aliens, except that we won’t have any verification provisions to see that they can’t apply and get benefits.

As for those of you lamenting about profits in the health insurance industry let me share a few facts with you.
About 100 million people in the U.S. have health “insurance” through Blue Cross/Blue Shield plans many of which are non profit.
Most “insurance” in the U.S. is not really insurance which means an insurer is at risk. Approximately 165 million people are covered by employee insurance plans through their work. The majority of these are in large companies which “self insure”. That means the “insurance company” is just an administrator for the employer which bears all the risk. Therefore, there is NO profit to be gained by denying people’s claims for a BC/BS plan or a self insured plan! Any money saved by denying claims is saved for the employer, not the “insurance company”. Another misleading statement by the President.

Pres Obama is a master of double-speak. His MO is to say all the right things and then go do whatever he was going to do anyway. He has learned that as long as he talks a good game, the wonderful speech gets reported, what he actually does goes unreported. He can still cheat to win. After all, who are we to believe, what Obama tells us or our lying eyes. The best way to determine what Obama really means when he speaks is to just think the opposite. Joe Wilson was just pointing that out.

George Stephanopoulos has been drinking too much again or reliving his Clinton years. The uninsured numbers given by the Democrats indicate that Illegals will be part of the Health Care program proposed (46 million people). Obama may of redlined the existing bill proposed and removed items which were causing friction – he didn’t say that either. This is no different that Congress mocking Bush at his speeches but with much more Liberal News Coverage and well known bias from ABC. The bill is online in black and white for anyone who wants to look it up and verify that the president did indeed speak the truth. Sad to see how many cling so proudly to their hatred and ignorance, rather than do a simple fact check and acknowledge reality as it stands in plain print for all the world to see. What is wrong with people, that they would rather hate than see truth, or see something good and so badly needed happen to desperately suffering Americans.
Mr. Wilson has shown his true colors, and they are not those of the hardworking Americans whose lives are in the hands of himself and his party.

Sorry… but as far as I am concerned Obama should have told the idiot to STAND when he addresses the President of the United States.
And then he should have told him to Produce PROOF that he (the president) was lying or face a civil suit for slander and defamation, and then he should have yanked the schmuck by his collar to the podium and asked him to read aloud the portion of the constitution that gave his dumb, South Carolina butt the power to address a joint session of congress.
The transparently racist fool should be run out of Washington on a rail. Sadly, the Republican party just showed its total lack of patriotism.

Of course the left thinks that they hit “pay dirt” when Wilson told the truth …… they can’t hit “pay dirt” on any of their big government ideas so they will settle for this I guess. SAD!

Dems hit paydirt on Wilson’s two words? What does that say about the rest of the speech if Wilson can steal the show with two words? I never heard of Wilson before. I know who he is now.

What Wilson shouted was stupid, inappropriate and clumsy. but nevertheless the truth, as time will tell.

John said, “I remember when the Democrats hissed at George Bush when he addressed Congress. No one made a big deal of it. Only when Barack almighty speaks.”
I remember that, too. Today is the first time I have ever contributed to a political candidate–Joe Wilson!
By the way, pundits, the lies started LONG before President Obama got to that phrase about illegal immigrants.
Oh, and Mr. Stephanopoulos, any word on how much revenue this has generated for Congressman Wilson?

If Obama is a “liar” then all Americans are bloody liars. Don’t u guys get it! Obama is your president and if you, because of stupid politics, think u’re hurting his personality, “You Lie”. U ain’t! You’re rather projecting to the world what America has become – a nation with leaders who lack common sense where and when necessary!

I have observed George’s comments over time and he is such a professional reporter; he is so unbiased and always tells the truth where it hurts. Thumbs up, George!

Obama worded his speech to have bloggers on both sides be correct in their interpretation. Illegals are not allowed but are allowed through Medicare which is still funded by Federal dollars which the public option will end up saving. 2nd. Many employers will end up going with the govt option since it is cheaper than 8% of their gross revenues and or chaeaper than their current premiums, 3rd. the famous death panels…that is just a hyperbole expressing that seniors will not be allowed to the medical care they had prior to Obama…like he said in the campaign…send them home with a pain pill and pass on. If that is not a “death panel” than please America, what is it?4th. He is going to improve a broken system….how many of you want to pay $3800.00 a year as punishment because you have decided you do not and never had healthcare. What about those Americans who’s religion do not believe in Doctors and Hospitals? Isn’t this unconstitutional? Obama has not been straight with us….just fancy rose colored words and I believe unconstitutional. This is a Republic and it already feels like the USSR. Say no to this America…besides the punishment fees, our taxes will skyrocket along with our electric bills they are trying to get passed to along with this healthcare bill. There will not be anymore wealthy Americans to give us a job. By the time they finish in Congress, we will have over 30% unemployment and all of us will be in a world of trouble this country has never seen before. God Help Us!!

Joe Wilson only said what is true. He has the right to disagree with the president. That is why we have separation of powers. Why should he sit there and let him sell on something he doesn’t believe in…? OF COURSE he should try to disarray people from it.
I am so sick and tired of hearing about Obama care. Get rid of the damn idea. It didn’t work with Clinton it won’t work now. Everyone says we are one of the only industrialized nation 1st world country that does not have government run health care. We are also land of the free. We don’t want a powerful government. We are pretty much the only damn country that still allow guns. Pretty soon we are just going to be peons in some damned nation that will fall.
/sigh…
END RANT.

I don’t understand why those on the political right bother visiting biased media Web sites. If they are convinced ABC, NBC, CBS, and CNN are biased it seems to be a waste of their valuable time. I’m sure they would feel much more at home on the Fox News (balanced new coverage) Web site.

Let me remind folks that the 3 branches of government, the Judicial, Legislative, and Executive, are co-equals. Yes, Mr. Wilson may not have chosen the most appropriate time to have an outburst of discontent with the President’s lying, but you people are acting as if Obama was some god. Get over it, period! Of course, it could be much worse. Just look at South Korea’s parliament. Now they have a slug fest when their politicians disagree. Or look at Italy’s. Man, that looks like fun. All kidding aside. The President is the enforcer of the laws congress passes. His title, commander in chief, is sometimes carried a bit too far. Lest I remind you that that title and its meaning are appropriate within the military confines. He is the commander in chief of the United States military. Outside of that, he is just our President. That is all. Unless, of course, you all are insinuating that we’re a military state and we must all pay homage to Caesar. So, folks, go back to your history books and our Constitution and read up on it. And lastly, these three branches of government are there to serve the people. Not the other way around. Just some food for thought.

Peace be upon all the families and friends who lost someone at the WTC. My nephew, Jerome Nedd was also killed there and the pain still lingers, especially because bin laden has not been brought to justice for this heinous and barbaric crime. I hope he suffers and long for death but not find it untill he can say to his animal followers respect humanity respect life.

No, I wouldn’t want to see billions of dollars spent on “Health Care Reform” that is not needed. Millions have no health insurance. Yeah, so? How did those millions live a hundred and fifty years ago before health insurance? They stayed healthy, took care of themselves, or died. This continuous support of the weakest link in the society is what’s dragging the species down into a miasma of de-evolution. Don’t want to work? Fine, we’ll pay you to sit on your backside and watch Oprah. Don’t want to fight? Fine, we’ll have fewer and fewer soldiers do the fighting for you until we eventually lose because we can’t field enough troops. Don’t want to think? That’s OK, the political parties will do your thinking for you, just vote along party lines. Don’t want to stay fit and healthy? Don’t worry, we have universal health care,… that all the actual working people are paying for. Don’t want to take care of your wife/husband/brother/sister/dad/mother when they get sick? Its OK. We’ll do it for you in one of thousands of government run sanitoriums. Don’t want to actually earn respect? That’s OK, everyone deserves equal respect, even if they’re a lying, cheating, do-nothing politician,… oh, except for the right.

Posted by: Sharon | September 11, 2009, 9:25 am 9:25 am

Joe Wilson is exactly what is wrong with the Republican Party and why it is in a state of utter chaos and collapse. Instead of offering better solutions on anything, the Republican party run around acting like a wild gang of rabid wolves attacking, bullying and lying their way through. The most glaring example of the diabolical ways of the Republican Party is the war in Iraq. They lied through their teeth and as a result, so many service men and women died. So Joe, you are the epitome of disgrace and heartlessness and feeble-mindedness. You are of the old guard and need to go away because times have changed and more people than you think are sick of you and your good old boys buddies and your bias views. And anyone who though it was funny that old joe the idiot completely disrespected the President and Congress, is what is wrong with this country as well. It’s despicable.

Posted by: Delena | September 11, 2009, 9:25 am 9:25 am

I’ll tell you why Joe Wilson made the outburst, because he’s a disrespctful idiot and puppet. Bush sat in front of that same group and lied about the Iraq war and never once was disrespected, no President has ever been treated in that manner. So, if Joe did it because he feels he doesn’t have to respect the President because he’s African-American, he should be ousted. How dare he think that the President deserves less. Joe has shown himself to be a person that does not deserve respect. Shame on him and shame on the Republican party who indirectly put him up to this disgusting act.

Republican wrote:”George,Why don’t you mention the money that Congressman Joe Wilson raise over night”?
He’s gonna need every cent he can raise. According to Open Secrets, Joe Wilson is do deep in personal debt he will never see the light of day. Big mouth’s cause people to look very closely at your records.

Wilson is a retired Army National Guard colonel. He enjoys free lifetime GOVERNMENT paid medical coverage, known as TRICARE. The program has access not only to the military’s 133,500 uniformed health professionals, but also cooperating private doctors. Fees are paid by the Department of Defense. Surveys from 2007 and 2008 list TRICARE among “the best health insurer(s) in the nation” by customer satisfaction. Is this Socialism?

LOL, the more the mouth breathers show Joe Wilson their love, the more his opponent’s fund goes up. It’s nearing $800,000. Will it make it to a million?? Poor old Joe needs all the money he can get cause he’s in deep personal financial doo-doo.

Sue said: “This misses the point of last night. Obama gave NO SPECIFICS as to how he would actually pay for this plan. If it was so easy to find fraud and waste in medicare, don’t you think they would have done it already?”
Yes he did. You must not have watched. He said that the plan would be funded by premiums, just like the for-profits, but with the elimination of profits; exhorborant salaries and bonuses for executives for increasing profits, and the cost for the elaborate buildings that house them; un-necessary overhead for lobbyists/advertising to maintain the status quo – overhead for for- profits is 20-30%, medicaid/medicare is 4-6%; and the plan will create competition – the president pointed out that 1 company in Atlanta controls 90% of the market; to name a few, would all both reduce costs and increase quality of care by putting more emphasis on doctor/patient relationship-Dr’s now spend too much time on dealing with ins. claims/denials/paperwork – many doctors support because they would have more time to focus on patients and take on additional patients.

Well, I am a voter in SC, and Wilson has my vote. Obama is a liar—and should have been called long ago. Hey, George since when do REAL journalists (for which you are obviously not) use “likely energize” nonsense? Do you bother to see how much more Wilson has raised in your unfair and unbalanced PROPAGANDA?

Posted by: PotatoeGater22 | September 11, 2009, 6:03 pm 6:03 pm

Oh, I knew I would see Bots rushing to defend Obama (a man of multiple lies to everyone) by claiming he wasn’t lying. Newsflash, pumpkins not only did Obama lie and yes he has told others that the health plan will cover illegals and he has told la raza that he would make illegals legals so they would be covered anyways—but in the news today dems have moved to changed to the health plan to close the illegal loophole story found even here on ABC.

Posted by: PotatoeGater22 | September 11, 2009, 6:13 pm 6:13 pm

I don’t know if the Dems “hit the jackpot”, but Wilson’s sure raking in the dough. Hysteria or calculated fund-raising?

Posted by: Cassandra | September 11, 2009, 7:27 pm 7:27 pm

Hey George, before you get all orgasmic over how much money was contributed to Joe Wilson’s opponent, maybe you should also look at how much money was contributed to Joe “you lie” Wilson since the outburst. But then again, that would be too un-biased for you left-wing propagandists. So because you won’t report it,I will.750,000.

In the mind of Joe Wilson he thinks he will be a Martyr or a hero, but his untimely rude outburst will cost him in the long run, it will only prove to be an Embarrassment to the Republican party, he will become another ball and chain.

Posted by: we'rl | September 11, 2009, 11:56 pm 11:56 pm

Poor timing… but he spoke the truth. Congress’ own non-partisan research arm had already pointed out that illegals would be eligible for government sponsored healthcare.

A hero would be someone who stood up and shouted against a dictator with the threat of jail and torture, Joe wilson lives in a democracy, he had plenty of other options than to behave that way..that is not “telling the truth” it is behaving like a jackass,,he disrepected not just Obama but the entire Congress and it traditions, and the voters with his antics, if he is such a brave hero and so right than he should not have apologized, either way then your “hero” is a bit of a punk..sure hope you dont have kids
Way to go Joe. I don’t live in South Carolina but I am very proud of you for telling the truth. I will now donate money to you. Gotta love patriots who don’t just bow down to Obama and Pelosi. I laughed so hard at Pelosi with her silly stern looks in the direction of my new hero

Posted by: dan | September 12, 2009, 4:45 am 4:45 am

I remember the Democrats hissing and booing President Bush during his speeches. And nodding their heads in disgust. Republicans didn’t ask for a apology 4 or 5 times…geez. And maybe just maybe, Obama DID lie!
He apologized for being rude. And President Obama accepted. I really think this is making to much over it.

So it’s OK to interrupt the President’s Address by jumping to your feet with applause and cheers if you agree, but if you disagree you must sit and stew in your own juices? You can’t have it both ways. Either we all sit nicely with our hands folded in our laps and hold our applause, or it’s an open forum. Decorum be damned.

While the democrats may have gotten a boost from Rep Wilson’s comments, I think you will find that he gotten an even larger one. I certainly believe there is a certain decorum which must be shown in Congress and to the President. I however, believe that Rep Wilson was speaking for a large part of the population with what he said. So I would be careful to characterize it as democrat win.

Where was the moral outrage when Bush was spending Billions per month occupying Iraq? Being for the troops does not mean that they should all be buried at Arlington Cemetary.
I have taught my childred to be respectful to their teachers, police/firefighters and the less fortunate, that list would also include the President of the United States.
President Obama was elected by a majority of Americans, he is the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the United States.
