Gates: Afghan Troop Decision in ‘Few Weeks’

National Security Advisor Jim Jones tells Bob Woodward “I don’t have a deadline in my mind” for completing the strategic review of President Obama’s Afghanistan policy, but Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on 'This Week' that a decision would come in a “few weeks.”

In our extended and pointed exchange, Gates also rebutted charges from Senator John McCain and others
who’ve argued that the delay in approving General McChrystal’s request for more resources is putting US troops now in Afghanistan at risk.  He also tamped down reports of a rift between President Obama and his
military commanders.

As the man in the middle between the White House and the uniformed military, Gates would not say where he comes down on the question of more troops.  But when I asked him to define success in Afghanistan, he said it “looks a great deal” like success in Iraq.

Of course there was a “surge” in Iraq, akin to what McChrystal is recommending for Afghanistan.

So is Gates tipping is hand, or throwing a head fake?

Here’s our exchange:

STEPHANOPOULOS:  Is that good enough?

GATES:  Well, I think — I think we know it when we see it and we see it in Iraq.  I think that success in Afghanistan looks a great deal like success in Iraq, in this respect, that the Afghan national security forces increasingly take the lead in protecting their own territory and going after the insurgents and protecting their own people. We withdraw to an over watch situation and then we withdraw altogether.

STEPHANOPOULOS:  This first required a surge in Iraq.

GATES:  It did require a surge.  And that's the issue that we will be looking at over the next several weeks — the next couple of weeks or so, is do we have the right strategy?

And that includes the question of — of is the — is McChrystal's approach, in the view of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Central Command commander, the right approach? And if so, then what — what would be the initial resources involved?

- George Stephanopoulos

I hope our President is not taking any advice from this War Monger pretty hard to take advice from someone who shot down our own planes.

Gates is the Sec or Defense, how can he not take his advice? You do realize Gates wasn’t in office when both of the current wars started? Should we just leave Afganistan to the Tabilan and allow the terrorist to establish a base to attack and kill more U.S. citizens? I cannot imagine us walking away after they were responsible for 3,000 plus people on our homeland.

I love this administration’s style?

In a “few” weeks…..didn’t the war start 7 years ago……..and it’s been the “forgotten, uninterested war” until President Obama took office. Afganistan Wasn’t important before because it has NO OIL……….and who in the past Administration care, other than to “pretend” to the American people. So, in the meantime, right now, Let’s get it right! Yes, in a few weeks…to sort our where we should go in light of the “rouge” fake government of Karza, and the stealing of the election…. remember this is the “man” the Bush ‘put’ in Charge in Afganistan….he’s never taken an active role in helping his own country….I want my money back, and maybe the deficit wouldn’t be so high.

Hello I have learned everything there is to know about the war in Vietnam and how dare you try to compare the afghan war to Vietnam, calling it Obama’s Vietnam is ridiculous, President Obama was given a list of the country’s problems November 4, 2008 the day where he beat senator McCain in the election, this list that stretches all the way from Albany to Honolulu. I know that the United States for many years tried to hide that fact that we LOST the war in Vietnam, is was crazy young American men were being drafting out of high school to fight in a war they had no business in, a group of soldiers completely wiped out an in entire village did we forget My Lai, Vietnam soldiers were shooting more heroin and more corrupt than ever, let’s remember there was no poppy fields in Harlem recall where Drug Lord Frank Lucas got his product from. Former President George W, Bush 2000-2008, even avoided being drafted himself no one wanted to fight in that war. Now of you can sit here and tell me that the Afghan war is Obama’s Vietnam you must have been sleeping in history class, right now in 2009 there is no draft, and soldiers aren’t killing entire villages.
Lets remember the American people did not want to fight in Vietnam it wasn’t our war, but after 9/11 Americans were crying for justice and to fight terrorism and most of us agreed to go to Iraq because we were scarred, scarred that we couldn’t fly in a plane, or go to work, or drive a taxi without being blown up. We were not provoked in Vietnam we weren’t threatened or in fear so do you really think that this is Obama’s Vietnam. Did we call Iraq Bush’s Vietnam tell me now if I am mistaken.
Americans argue oh do we want to walk away and let them kill another 3000 people, more people died (sorry are dying) in the war in Iraq than 9/11 so far anyway so it’s like we were attacked twice. I’m not saying to stop fighting against terrorism we will always need to fight to protect our country but President Obama did not start this mess he will need to finish it though and there is no easy way out.

Your “In memorial” piece on the death of Don Yarborough, was incorrect. It was Senator Ralph Yarborough’s campaign that brought JFK to Texas.
Don Yarborough ran several times after 1963 trying to capitalize on the Yarborough name.

With Gitmo, Afghanistan and the Iran issue, I am not so sure the Obama WH has formulated a plan to develop and execute a strategy for these. They seem to be waiting for Pelosi to bless their plans.
I hope Obama realizes he is the President and needs to do what is right for the country.

Posted by: scott jeffries | September 27, 2009, 11:41 am 11:41 am

Uh, Georgie it will be a few more weeks… Obama wants a few more American troops to die first.. And yes Obama knows its Iran that is supplying the Taliban with IEDs to kil americans, but ..you know…..what can ya do?

You heard him. In a few weeks. Whenever they can get to it. No rush, guys.

It’s more important for politicians to jam the government’s interpretation of health care down our throats? I’m so warmy feeling now.

Posted by: LongT | September 27, 2009, 12:36 pm 12:36 pm

Afghanistan is 3 TIMES LARGER than South Vietnam and we couldn’t control the Vietnam countryside with 500,000 troops. It’s a TRAGEDY how QUICKLY the US military forgets. Or maybe it’s very profitable to forget, with 100s of greedy military contractors waiting to cash in on a larger – but futile – effort. The only thing that doesn’t change is that it’s mostly kids from poor families that come home in boxes.

I hadn’t recognized a strategy thus far. First, we must define out objective. No one seems to have that articulated yet either.

Posted by: ken | September 27, 2009, 1:44 pm 1:44 pm

OK, now, everybody back to the White House to wring our hands and sweat profusely.

Posted by: rplat | September 27, 2009, 1:46 pm 1:46 pm

Have they pulled the troops that are there back to a safe zone until the President can “decide what direction he wants to go”? This is “inappropriate” for the President to be so disrespectful to the soldiers that are there now. And deadly.

Posted by: wheresmymoney | September 27, 2009, 1:53 pm 1:53 pm

The US is in a no win situation in Afghanistan. Leaving Afghanistan completely will be unwise and increasing troops will not be terribly prudent. Whatever happened to smart diplomacy and establishing peace. The current situation is not sustainable. Even a senior Afghan minister cannot be protected from the Taliban attempts to kill him. A radical new approach will be required to end the war and the defense forces should not have to bear that burden.

Posted by: gjkotw01 | September 27, 2009, 9:33 pm 9:33 pm

In afghanistan, Karzi has done n’thing to help afghanistan or america; he is just there to help his family. He must go if we want to see peace in that part of the world.

The priorities are apparent, eh? OBama can find time to promote himself on every network at a rate never seen before but he can’t find the time to make a decision on the request from the Commander in charge? POTUS either needs to fire the Commander as it’s clear the Commander’s goals do not align with the POTUS or, POTUS needs to trust in the professionals. Let me guess, POTUS’ experience as a community organizer trumps that of 35 years military experience?

Posted by: fedup_11 | September 28, 2009, 8:46 am 8:46 am

All of you comparing this to Vietnam need to wake up. Also, those declaring a no win are incorrect, unless of course Obama decides on no more troops. But first, we have to make sure health care is crammed down our throats, Chicago gets the Olympics and just disregard the General Obama put in place. Obama said Afghanistan is “America’s war”, but after 9 months is till trying to decide a strategy? The only thing that has changed is more dead soldiers since Obama took ofice. Send in the troops, kick @$$ and then bring them home.

U.S. Commander of Afghanistan has only talked to Obama once?

The president can’t vote present this time (as Hillary pointed out during the campaign) so he is busy doing talk shows and lobbying for the Olympics instead of making the hard decisions……while our guys die in the dust. God help us!!

Posted by: Kathy in Pa. | September 28, 2009, 10:33 am 10:33 am

The Commander in Afghanistan has spoken to Obama once in 70 days? I guess Obama was too busy with Jay Leno or sipping chardonnay at the various parties he attends. Obama needs to start taking the job seriously and get off of his personal power agenda.

Posted by: brian | September 28, 2009, 11:33 am 11:33 am

Direct contact with boots on the ground once in 70 days..what a great CIC we have…
I can see the reasoning clearly…
“I can’t be bothered with deciding whether or not to give our fighting forces what they need right now.. Me and Michelle have to rush off to Copenhagen to make sure we get the Olympics in Chicago..after all, we’ll need to bring in some jobs for all those fired ACORN employees..”

Posted by: arkie vet | September 28, 2009, 2:28 pm 2:28 pm

And no.. for all you liberals reading that last post… I am not saying that was an actual Obama quote… so don’t accuse me of lying…
Its called sarcasm… a lie would be saying he actually gives a damn about anyone in this country who doesn’t support his socialist agenda.

Posted by: arkie vet | September 28, 2009, 2:31 pm 2:31 pm

More reliable news sources are reporting right now that Obama has only talked to the Afgahnistan US comand leaders only one time. Its been four weeks since they asked for helped and he says he will have an answer in about three weeks. What the He– kinda leader is this. Our kids are dying over there and this guy thinks he has all the time in the world. He sure found time to pitch for chicago. Thanks you yes we canners. My nephew goes there in two weeks. Thanks for putting him in danger with this poll watching I am god president.

Get out! Nothing is to be gained in Afghanistan! America will not bring back our 3000+ dead from the WTC or our 5000+ dead in the Iraq and Afghanistan politcal war. War, what good is it!!! Use all of our resources to protect America from within our own shores. The military complex only cares about their budget and the money made from war. I hope President Obama, acting as Commander in Chief, brings all of our troops home from everywhere in the world we have them now.

Posted by: john copeland | September 28, 2009, 5:53 pm 5:53 pm

Gates is worthless and Obama is too busy promoting himself to prioritize the needs of war. Simply too many pressers to do; sorry General.

Posted by: fedup_11 | September 29, 2009, 8:12 am 8:12 am

meanwhile more kids are dieing because Obama is taking his time to please cindy sheahan. Good leader. Kill off you troops and then say soemthing about it later

Posted by: Jim Rod | September 29, 2009, 1:23 pm 1:23 pm

I simply do not understand any of you complaining about it taking too long to send more troops over to Afghanistan. Would you rather they do what you want and just send them there without any plan in place to make sure they are doing the best thing possible? And if they do that, what will you do and who will you blame if their mismanagement causes far more of our troops to be killed? Will it still be their fault for doing what you asked them to do? Or will it be YOURS….? They need to make sure the new troops and every other resource they send will be used in the most effective manner possible. Many of you need to chug a big glass of shut up and let those in charge do what they need to do.

Posted by: CarpeDiem | September 29, 2009, 2:22 pm 2:22 pm

I’m thankful my Marine is in Iraq now. I hope he isn’t sent to Afghanistan because I’ve seen this type of political infighting about troop numbers before. During Vietnam! Incremental additions to please liberals is no way to put American fighting men and women in harm’s way. If there’s no will to beat the Taliban, then get out. NATO forces lost that battle already.

He’s got time to fly to Denmark, to make appearances on all of the talk shows over a weekend, to take 3 vacations…..but has no time to talk seriously about supporting our troops??? Either yes or no, Mr. Prez….but don’t just ignore them!

Posted by: ncpilot09 | September 29, 2009, 7:34 pm 7:34 pm

He wants to be a rock star, not the president. I think he has discovered that being president is a little harder than he thought…and he’s just not mature enough or man enough for the job
He whined constantly about the way Bush was running the country…and look what he’s doing now….hardly any difference…”O” found out that maybe the Gitmo decision was the right one…Maybe Iraq was the right decision….Maybe Afghanistan was correct….Maybe he’s started to realize that his Utopia world was make believe and he can’t ‘nice’ folks into liking us. Wow….he’s probably upset that there really isn’t a little sponge man with square pants living at the bottom of the ocean. Amazing when the realities of life smack you in the face, huh?

Posted by: ncpilot09 | September 29, 2009, 7:41 pm 7:41 pm

Carpe Diem….it’s not that we’re upset that he’s not sending more troops. What we are upset about is the he refuses to address the issue. I personally think that if the generals over there say they need more troops, then we SHOULD send them. Maybe fewer will be killed. It worked in Iraq. The casualties went DOWN with more troops. But that’s beside the point. The point is he is the Commander in Chief….and he’s ignoring our troops. He’d rather fly to Denmark to do the job of a Mayor or Sec’y of State than to do his job as CIC. If that’s what he wants to do, then turn the helm over to Hillary, and let him do the Sec’y of State job.

Posted by: ncpilot09 | September 29, 2009, 7:45 pm 7:45 pm

McCrystal needs more troops in Afghan but Pres. is sitting on it…What a blow to our young men and women fighting for the freedom of all of us back home….Economy in the tank….Unemployment at all time high…Health Care Reform a total joke that Congress unwilling to post 72 Hrs. before the vote….And Obama, wifey and Oprah making a trip to Copenhagen to discuss the Olympics being brought to Illinois.
…So much for Change in Washington and Yes We Can, Yes We Can……….What a joke of a President………………………..

Obama’s going to get the olympics to Chicago because it’s such a great place for tourists to vist. The Chicago Olympics will introduce “Sycnchronized Mugging” (The team will be local, and they are expected to take the gold. Oh yeah..and the watches…and the wallets). The new sport of 1200 meter car-jacking will be sponsored. And don’t forget Continental Corruption. The winner is determined by who can give the highest ranking democrat the most kick back money….

Posted by: ncpilot09 | September 30, 2009, 5:32 am 5:32 am

I love the Republican “non-comparisons”. What did Bush do vs. what is Obama actually doing or not doing. Then again, to the right wing, fair comparisons are irrelevant – just as is truth, honesty, reality, etc, etc. are also irrelevant!

Posted by: Sentinel | September 30, 2009, 3:11 pm 3:11 pm

In the mean time 43 kids are dead since help was asked for. Just think if one or more could have been spared with a few extra troops over there. In the mean time Obama and Oprah are playing the circuit. Maybe like Kennedy and Monroe did? I am so proud of you yes we canners for electing a Jimmy carter clone. he even uses one of Carters old advisers. Maybe there is a prblem here. If the republicans are disrupting all the plans and the so called protesters then how did this guy get elected? Easy to pass blame isn’t it can doers

Posted by: Jim Rod | October 1, 2009, 11:58 am 11:58 am

The tragedy here is of course that Bush let the progress in Afghanistan slip away because he and his posse were so obsessed with Iraq. In 2001-2002, we had the Taliban and Al-Qaeda on the run. And then, Bush told us Bin Laden was probably dead and did the bait-and-switch move with Iraq. Just like in the movies, when the bad guy is down you have to finish him off. However, if there is one person to listen to, it is Petraeus. He’s the best we have right now and he got the job done in Iraq.

Sorry Mr. President, either send more troops NOW or pull all troops out NOW. While you tout the crime riddeld Chicago to the Olimpic Comm. (as a political payback) My fellow service members are being maimed/killed. I can truly say, this is one political hack the still dosn’t get it. I emailed all of my Senators and Reps. to be really worried about Nov. 3, 2010. That’s the day they will be un-employed.
