GOP Congressman to Obama: ‘You Lie!’

ABC News’ Rick Klein and Teddy Davis report:

A Republican member of Congress interrupted President Obama’s speech tonight on the floor of the House of Representatives to yell “You lie!” at the president, in reference to the president’s assertion that his proposals wouldn’t provide health insurance to illegal immigrants.

The Associated Press identified the member of Congress as Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C. The extraordinary outburst caused the president to pause briefly, and First Lady Michelle Obama to shake her head, as the emotions that have been on display all summer at town hall meetings spilled over into the Joint Session of Congress.

Asked about the interruption by ABC News, a Republican National Committee official did not confirm the identity of the heckler, but said: “The reality is the President was not telling the truth about illegal immigrants getting access to care under the bill.”

Wow, it is in rather poor taste but, then again, has a tradition in democratic republican, or parliamentarian, systems to interject during speeches, especially if outright lies are being told. HOWEVER, Obama is a lawyer, and a clever one at that, and it is doubtful that Obama LIED. Firstly, we have no idea what bill Obama was talking about- so he could always claim it was another one, or one to be written. Secondly, illegals are ALREADY covered under our current system- so Obamacare doesn’t need to expressly make legislation to cover them. Illegals show up to an ER they get covered. Nuff said as they say. So says the Courts, laws, regulations, etc. So he can get Obamacare and without expressly dealing with illegal issues. As long as Obama can get the database, he’ll be happy.

It was a spontaneous guttaral outburst of recognized deceit.

It is time both parties work together. The congressman that yelled out was a horrible example for our young people. He should apologize to the President. The Republicans certainly showed they do not want this health reform to work. Very Very sad for the American people.

Can you cite it ever happening in a joint session of Congress in America even once since the Civil War?

Well, if the Representative has such little control over his gut then maybe he should stay at home while the adults are talking.

That’s Republicans these days…low class rednecks to the end…makes me embarrassed I ever called myself one of them. I did completely love that Obama called Sarah Palin a liar though. But that like calling a turkey a turkey.

Stay classy GOP, stay classy. In a couple of decades that party will realize why they have gone the way of the Dodo bird. Just pathetic, and just par for the course.

If Ed’s observations are correct perhaps he can explain why Congress specifically prohibits such personal outbursts on the Floor of the House, and why, as a result of this one, Mr Wilson is technically subject to censure or expulsion.
Our tradition is completely different from that in England. I’ve watched both in action and, despite what you see at town meetings and press conferences, Senators and Congresspeople don’t ever shout each other down or yell “you lie” at each other during their comments or debates.

wiki has already updated their web with the FACTS!!!
September 9th, 2009 Presidential Address
During a September 9, 2009 speech to a joint session of Congress by President Obama, Wilson created controvery by calling out “You lie!” as Obama said there was no coverage for illegal immigrants in his healthcare plan. [10][11] Fellow Congressmen shouted their disapprovals at Wilson’s outburst, and after the session, Senator John McCain called upon Wilson to immediately apologize. According to the nonpartisan organization FactCheck.org, the claim that the Democratic health care proposals include provisions to provide coverage for illegal immigrants is false.[12]

Congressman Wilson should resign. What he did tonight was disrespectfyl and inexcusable. You just don’t behave that way regardless of your position. I am sure the Republican members in congress will distance themselves from Wilson the nut job.

to jhw539: I cannot think offhand of examples but I’m not a CSPAN junkie. It is a interesting sign this guy is from SC again, huh? I’m sure it has happened aplenty. I recall many instances of what would be considered in a court-of-law “contempt” like sleeping during the address- often involving a certain besotten Kennedy or other Senator. And, of course, in opportune applause, gauffaws, and refusing-to-stand. So this character from SC got carried away- a little because he expressed his consituency verbally and singly- instead of participating in a lockstep response (either clapping, standing, gauffawing, or mummering). Not a big sin considering.
The issue at hand that Obamacare, if we actually could know as to WHAT bill he is supporting, still covers illegals- because the existing rules, regulations, and court rulings mandate that. So no “change” here. He could’ve at least offered some kind of cost-saving measure there. Like illegals can’t get an “abogado” and sue. Or billing the countries from whence them came. Or even a simple surcharge of money exchanges to certain countries. But no “change” there….

I thought it was low class in the extreme. The Republicans had an opportunity to present their side following the President’s speech; they should have saved their objections for that. There was no rude Democrat present for the Republican response to shout at things he/she disagreed with…

Posted by: doug | September 9, 2009, 10:02 pm 10:02 pm

This was not any ordinary town hall – this was a joint session of Congress.
Normal parliamentary rules are in place, and Rep. Wilson violated them with a spontaneous outburst.
The Speaker of the House (regardless of party) should formally censure Rep. Wilson for making comments without having the floor or time reserved.
This is not a partisan issue – it’s a decorum issue.

They increasingly become the party of no-values who spread lies, misinformation and no class everywhere they go.
There are always extremists at both ends of the party but never in my thirty some years of voting have I seen elected officials and the mainstream of a party behave as they have towards Obama.
I consider George W. Bush one of the worst leaders we have ever had but never in my wildest dreams would I condone anyone treating him with the kind of disrespect an fear mongering we are witnessing on the right.
It disgusts me. They have no manners, no decent values and no respect for anyone but their “own kind.”

Ed is confusing Medical Care with Medical Coverage. Anyone, including an illegal immigrant, can get CARE at an emergency room. And rightfully so…you do not want to be fishing around for your identification while in the middle of a heart attack.
Medical Coverage (i.e. insurance) is obtained through an employer, and usually utilizes a SSN (or legal resident identifier) as an identifier. Presumably, a public plan would also utilize a SSN. Which only a citizen can have.

That fact is unfortunately that illegal immigrants get access to many things that hard working Americans are sometimes denied. That fact is also that the congressman was very rude and unprofessional.

Posted by: joe | September 9, 2009, 10:13 pm 10:13 pm

You people act like we live in a dictatorship! So, one person made a comment. Big deal! Obama IS lying. The wording may not say “Illegal immigrants will be covered” in plain language, but there are sections that are worded so that they can be interpreted later to mean exactly the same thing. Liberals are so naive. These fat-cat liberals at the top of the chain are just trying to gain control over your whole lives by controlling everything about you. You are guaranteed life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness by the Constitution. That doesn’t mean you can interpret that to say I should have to pay for you to have food to eat, a place to live and health care. This is how the government makes you dependent on them, you fools!

ps: I did not mean to post more than once lest I be considered violating “Roberts Rules of Order” or some Congressional rules! I guess my computer got a virus from visiting whitehouse.gov or an ABC screw up. However, I agree that it is not becoming to shout out like that. He should be censored in some way-, not a full censure since it was likely a involunatry utterance- but something that he will likely take that back to SC as a badge of honor! It is too bad but that is what’s coming with so much “change” and aggrandisement of federal, but especially, executive power that accelerated under Bush but reaching its aegis under Obama.
Of course, it is also not becoming to eliminating doctor-patient confidentiality, states rights, or personal privacy by establishing a Federal centralized database controlled by a politically appointed “czar”!

Someone in this string of commentaries offered that they are sure this has happened before – please give me one example of when and to which President. The behavior of this Congressman was and is inexcusable and the appropriate immediate punishment would be to censure this individual. On the long term his constituents should vote him out unless they too don’t see a problem with his behavior.
It is okay to disagree, but disagreement should be done respectfully. It most certainly showed his ignorance.

Are you serious? This was not his time on the floor, he gets all the time he wants, and no lack of airtime on Fox – which insists they are the single most watched channel in America. And the Republican rebuttal, their time, was shown on all channels that carried the speech – without any Democrats trying to shout it down.

Mr. Joe Wilson must not realize that illegals are now guaranteed care in an emergency room under existing law.
I have complained about this law to Kay Bailey Hutchison on several occasions.
Hospitals treat anyone who comes into the ER because of EXISTING federal mandate and if the person can’t pay, the hospital is reimbursed (read: the taxpayer pays the bill.) This is not current legislation – this is old legislation.
The health care reform bill will change this mandate.
Mr. Joe Wilson was not only rude, but also not informed.

Illegals will continue to get access to health care whether it is written in the bill or not just like they do now. Are guards going to stand at the ER doors and stop them?? No way. I know for a fact that insured women frequently pay copays and 20% deductibles or more to have a baby but the illegals get it all for free-this is the truth! RNC response proves once again they do not care about Americans. They would rather spread “Pants on Fire” lies than work to stop Americans with insurance from having to pay $1000/year for uninsured Americans visits to ERs.
From 2001-2006, the GOP controlled all of Washington, but NEVER submitted a health care reform bill. Despite health insurance rising 10+% per year, the GOP looked the other way and said we needed to think about it some more. Now they want to think some more.

The law guaranteeing anyone care in the ER was passed in 1986! (wasn’t that a Republican era??)
If the person can’t pay, the hospital applies to the federal government for reimbursement. It even happens in Dallas hospitals, but in Texas, most are on the border.
So, if a Mexican woman is about to have a baby, she can cross the border and have her child in a US emergency room and we, the taxpayer, pays. That is a 1986 law! Not new.
Part of the REFORM that Mr. Obama proposes would change that 1986 law. Mr. Joe Wilson was calling names at the wrong person. Ronald Reagan and the 1986 Congress are the culprits. Facts, boys and girls … facts!

1) Obama is wrong. Although there is no explicit coverage of illegal aliens, there is also no requiremment for participants to prove their American citizenship, or proof that they are legally in the country. It has been tried many times in tthe many machinations of these bills, by Republicans to insert clauses to this effect, and every one of them has been shot down. On the other hand, Nancy Pelosi’s reaction to the controversy was outstanding. They should do this once a week and call it the Nancy Pelosi Show.

May I remind you sir, you work for us. We pay your salary. By disrespecting our President, you disrespected me and the American people who have elected our President. Above all, you disrespected the body of government who you are a member of and serve. I have serious reservations that you have any bit of respect for this great institution but if you do, you owe me, the President, and every American an apology- immediately! Obama chose his words carefully, especially on abortion. It could be that both illegals coverage and abortion will be forced by whatever a particular state’s action is. If so the state will point to the feds and the feds will point to the state and we will pay, unless the bill contains a specific exclusion. Remember our old enemy the ACLU who uses tax dollars to make us spend more tax dollars!

It is so blatant to me that those sitting on their hands tonight have no idea what the common American deals with on a daily basis. Really a poor showing—and a telling one. We need common efforts to improve our lives—not childish, outdated seperations with nothing to offer but division. IMPROVE OUR LIVES! That is what you were elected to do!

Posted by: Dale | September 9, 2009, 10:40 pm 10:40 pm

I completely agree with Joe Wilson calling out “You lie!” to Obama.
Barack Obama called for a joint session of Congress, calling *US* liars for saying illegals are covered. HR 3200, Sec 246 supposedly makes it impossible to cover illegals, *but does not specify a means of identification. It is therefore, de facto, covering illegals.*
For Obama to have chutzpah to call the truth a lie DESERVES to be shot down for what it is. The GOP has no obligation to be called in for a joint session merely to be the subject of abuse. If he wants to make his case that the specifics will come later, fine. But there’s no reason to be civil to someone who lacks civility in the first place like Barack Obama.
He got what he deserved. You reap what you sow.

Unless specific language is written into the bill including enforcement, illegal aliens and other non-citizens will have access. We went through that with the ‘Hillarycare’ bill. …. The Congressman owes an apology to the President for the outburst. The president owes one to the nation’s taxpaying citizens who will be asked to care for the world.

According to FactCheck:
the bill explicitly says that illegal immigrants can’t get any government money to pay for health care.
Page 143 states: “Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States.” Current law prohibits illegal immigrants from participating in government health care programs.
Mr. Wilson is a lying poltroon of the lowest order. He should be soundly smacked and sent to his room.

What do Republicans want? Would they prefer that hospitals allow illegals injured in car crashes to die on the side of the road? Should there be a “do not resussitate” order for illegals who suffer heart attacks?
Nobody is thrilled that we have all these uninsured people flooding our hospitals. On the other hand, maybe if we would give them work permits and legal status, they could buy their own insurance. With Republicans it’s always a Lose/Lose unless you tow their party line.

I think if anything this outburst shows that no one knows what is really going on with this bill(s). If nothing else this at least is stirring some people to truly find out the legitimacy of the President’s claims and not just to take them at face value, because when it comes down to it even the President is involved in politics and has an agenda and it is up to the people to educate themselves and call for support of what they want to see happen.

The president did lie. Amendments that would require a verification of immigration status in the determination eligibility for subsidy have been defeated. We have every reason to expect those that are in the U.S. in violation of immigration law would be willing to commit fraud to obtain subsidized (or free) health insurance. This is a big deception on the part of congress – and now the president.

The problem is that many of the criticisms of Obama’s bill apply equally to the status-quo ! Illegal immigrants are already being covered by the existing health-care. One can’t solve every problem with a sweeping magic wand… you need to make baby steps, one problem at a time. Even if Obama’s bill does not deal with this issue, but if it improves on other issues, it’s a huge progress. But of course the GOPs will not acknowledge that…

I was happy to see Senator Mc Cain say that it was disgraceful and he should apologize immediately to the president. This is why we can never accomplish anything. There is a time to disagree…and a time to be polite and respectful. Most of us have been brought up that way but the republicans feel they don’t have to be polite to a democratic president,, especially a black one. He was wrong, wrong and arroant. If the republicans want any respect they should make him apologize. This teaches the young that it is o.k. to be impolite and not respect someone who has achieved the highest post in the land. This and the school thing makes me glad I left the republican party after 23 years. It is not the party it was long ago and it is too inclusive. They often accuse others of not being American, however, it is they who set the rules if you don’t think like us, pray like us you are unAmerican. Too bad….we need two parties but not one like this. Masybe a party of Independents is really necessary to give both the republicans and the democrats something to work toward.

It is obvious Obama lied. He clearly intends to cover illegal aliens. When he mentions covering 47 million uninsured he is clearly talking about illegal aliens(because illegal aliens are about 25% to 33% of that 47 million number). Who cares about decorum. In Parliamentary systems the representatives shout out all the time. Further, it’s the truth that matters and Obama obviously lied(and continues to lie) on this point.

Congress specifically prohibits such personal outbursts on the Floor of the House, and Mr Wilson is technically subject to censure or expulsion. John McCain has asked this member to apologize. “Fact Check” is not “nonpartisan” and it’s clear and obvious Obama intends to cover illegal aliens. He doesn’t want to state that openly but if one is covering all of the uninsured, well,
25% to 33# of the 47 million uninsured are illegal aliens.

Posted by: ConstantXI | September 9, 2009, 11:04 pm 11:04 pm

Ed: You must have a personal or special definition for the word “covered”. If you take it to mean they don’t get refused in ERs, that not insurance coverage. Here’s the real bottom line: Just because someone refutes the REAL lies that Limbaugh and Hannity have been spreading for months, doesn’t mean they are lying. As a South Carolinian, I was disappointed by Rep. Wilson’s outburst. Most Southerners grow up with better manners.
At the same time, I agree with his position.
However, heckling during a Presidential speech to a Joint Session of Congress is nothing new.
The Democrats heckled George W. Bush in 2005, the Republicans heckled Bill Clinton in 1993, and numerous examples are readily available going back to the founding of the Republic.
It is bad manners, but is is part of the political process.
Despite President Obama’s assertion to the contrary, H.R. 3200 does not prohibit payments to illegal immigrants.
It only limits public option premium subsidies.
In other words, illegal immigrants can go under the public option, the same as American citizens. Poverty-level illegal immigrants would not be eligible to receive a government subsidy for their public option health care. They would have to pay the same rate as non-poverty level American citizens on the public option.

That did not mean they had no concern for their fellow man. Now they are the party of no heart, no class and no caring for anybody but themselves. Oh, but their Christians, all right! Distortions and lies and people believe them because they say it over and over and it is like brain washing…the more you hear it the sooner you belive it. If you are not sure of anything on the health bill go to FactCheck.org. It is non partisal and have your answers…don’t listen to Beck/Hannity/Limbaugh. How this whole thing has been handled is disgraceful. The fact that a president’s speech to the children on education had to be censored it outrageous. He is the most qualified to speak to children as he came up the hard way and knows what a good education can do for you. He is a good role model as he is good father and realizes that if he can save one child from going to jail by having them go to school and learn something..he has accomplished a great deal. The talk he had after with the boy whose parents were divorced helped that boy and he said he was glad he spoke with the president as he does not feel that it was his fault. Where has this country gone to when we allow disrespect to or president. If we lose this…we lose everything.

I can understand the frustration of the legislator with the presidents repeated lie about the exclusion of illegal immigrants from coverage. At the pinnacle of cynicism congress excluded illegal immigrants from coverage but refused to require verification of citizenship or legal immigration status. The presidents has been given a pass by George Stephanopoulos and other media figures on this lie. Ed: and others: illegals get government health care. Fact. Certain Courts have determined that, and then legislators, and Congress. Obamacare makes NO savings to this system. Nobody, save a few radicals, say don’t provide ER to care people. BUT you could charge them for it and/or have measures in effect to lessen the amazing burden this costs us. Like no illegals can hire an “abagoda” to sue doctors/nurses/hospitals who treat these illegals, like a tax on all money remittences to countries with documented illegals, or even seizing (a portion) of foreign held but US based assets to cover the costs of the illegals that use US healthcare either in our ERs or in our prisons. Simple measures, really. But no “change” under Obamacare I guess- expect more costs for citizens.

Lies or not, Congressman Wilson behaved terribly, and I am sure there will be more vitriolic diatribe from both Republicans and Democrats. Hate-spewing, knee-jerk reacting talk show hosts have fueled the fires. Never in my 30 years of adult life have I seen such base behavior in the political arena.

It is amusing that the plan Obama has regressed to is basically what Mitt Romney (right-wing GOP)created in Mass. plus a tax plan from John McCain (right-wing GOP), both of which Obama ridiculed during the pres. campaign — yet the GOP is still ridiculing this as left-wing/ socialism / fascism (isn’t fascism the opposite of socialism? oh well).
Obama has sold out, but even that isn’t enough to quiet the GOP attack dogs. Anything, anything that cuts corporate profits and helps decent, hard-working Americans is anathema to Republicans.

For a republican representative to openly call President Obama a liar in the joint session of Congress is the height of irony.
The world that was left after Cheney/Bush can only be described as a process in damage control. How many lies, oh how many lies, did you utter during your reign.
No respect. This is the problem. The republicans demand respect. The democrats endure disrespect because their love of the constitution allows this.

Just because a person is helped by a hospital emergency room does not mean he is covered by private or government insurance. An illegal alien would probably have his service non-reimbursed by the hospital bill and the cost would be absorbed by the hospital as it is now. However, if most or all citizens are covered the large amount of costs absorbed by hospitals now would be drastically reduced to the point the illegal person concern would not be consequential.

Obama provoked the outburst when he had his schizophrenic diatribe of how the opposition was spreading lies about how a government run program would ultimately pave the way for “death panels” or what other politically correct name they wish to give it. He used the pulpit to demean a large segment of the population that has genuine concerns about the government’s inability to manage such a program. It is unreasonable to expect a representative to sit quietly while his constituents are insulted and disregarded.

Republicans used to be a totally different kind of party. they were smart, they were sharp, and they looked out for the overall financial stability and defense of the nation. That did not mean they had no concern for their fellow man. Now they are the party of no heart, no class and no caring for anybody but themselves. Oh, but their Christians, all right!
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
They call themselves Christians, but they are in fact anti-Christ-ians.
All one has to do to prove it is read the relatively few teachings of Christ and compare it to their platform and ideas. They all revolve around money, power, and disregard of human suffering. These are anti-Christ-ian values based on the Teachings of Jesus Himself!

Obama gave an EXTREMELY partisan speech in which he directly called his critics “liars” because they view his “end of life counseling” as death panels and his EXTREMELY leftist big government grab as just that! Republicans correctly point out that illegals likely WILL recieve access to care under his mega-bill. If OBAMA can call honest disparagers and critics – LIARS ! then he should expect return fire. The truth is that this was a very partisan and accusatory speech. “Yes WE Can” is gone and replaced with “It’s not my fault – it’s theirs”

The reality is that to have an outburst like that not only looks bad on the Republican party, but shows utmost disrespect. Section 370 of the House Manual explicitly prohibits a member of the house of calling the president a liar.
Even without the written rules of behavior, though you may not agree with a position or the person, you should always respect the chair.
President Obama was inappropriate for the tone of the speech to refer to our party as progressive and the other party as republicans. However, it was not forbidden by the rules of the house manual.

Hooray for the guy who called him on his lie. You posters, who are lock step left, are not thinking true liberal. A true liberal would devise a way to collect taxes from illegal aliens so their healthcare cost wouldn’t be as much of an issue. There is a time and place for everything and acting like a spoiled brat during a televised national address was definetly not the right place or time for that behavior. There are a lot of comments on the board about illegal aliens and Emergency room visits. The law I believe you are referring to is EMTALA- the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act. All this act requires is for the emergency room to STABILIZE a person, and it does not provide an ongoing “treatment” for them. This is irrespective of citizenship- meaning both citizens and non-citizens, and regardless as to whether the person can pay for the services or not. I thought it was important to mention this because people are behaving as though EMTALA only applies to illegal aliens, which is not the case. So before any attempts to bash the legislation, let’s make an effort to understand it and who it applies to.

“secondlook, nice try again. The Repubs never had a “super majority.” Ever heard of a thing called a filibuster. They knew the Liberal Dems would block it. Next?”………… the dems would have looked foolish then, huh? Since they were the party wanting this for how many years? You do realize this was on the agenda regardless of any super majority? You do get legislation is passed during non super majority years? So, not a good enough excuse. Your party screamed and killed it with Hillary and they’re trying to do the same now. It is what it is. Just own it.

For representative Joe Wilson to call the President of the United States a lier on the floor of congress if absolutely inexcusible. He can call
Mr Obama a lier but not the President of the United States. I am outraged and I seldom even bother political matters.
Mr Wilson obviously does not understand the prinicipals of discipline and good conduct. It would be totally appropriate for the voters in his district throw him out of office at the next election.

I thought the conduct of Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C. and some of the other Republicans who brought signs to President Obama’s speech were completely inappropriate. I understand that not everyone has the same views on this controversial issue but a certain amount of respect should be given to the President of the United States.

The LIE that anyone can keep their present coverage is absolutely a LIE.
Several companies have already stated they will end their coverage, if
universal health care is available. So how will these people do anything
but be forced into something they do NOT want.
The United States is NOT a socialist country.
If this Universal Health is SOOOO good,
let Congress and the President sign on for this coverage. If it is good, then they should want it..
They won’t give up their cushy dole out
of coverage for Congress.

Like there isn’t some problem. Own that your party ignored doing anything about healthcare during 2001-2007 when they had the chance. Stop trying to say those dems would have filibustered. Finally someone has spoken out in public over what he has consistently done from the time of his campaign. He has given mistruths and halftruths as well as outright lies repeatedly. Apparently he (and some of his party members who have begun to utilize the same tactics) truly believe that Americans are devoid of any intelligence. When we are not being fed mistruths, he will absolutely refuse to answer specific questions and answer something entirely different as if he “misunderstood” what was being discussed or simply refuses to comply. Apparently the politicians have forgotten that they are not self-employed = they work for us and at some point we are going to replace the congressmen, senators & President if they do not remember that WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES are whom they are responsible to for their actions.

Not a shining moment to be sure, but how many more times will this President haul out the Iraq war cost as a justification for spending what little money we have left and then resorting to just printing money continuously and recklessly. How much of the bill has he read anyway? Are the promises he made tonight even in there? Does that matter to anyone? He paid lip service to TORT reform. His straw man method of explaining himself and attacking his critics is getting old. Who wrote this bill? Does that matter to anyone? The only possible way to pay for this is to tax everyone to death and ration health care. He actually tried to make it sound like the public option was going to be run like a business! It will have to survive and pay for itself with premiums it collects. And they will run it more efficiently than private companies who waste money with administrative costs. I am sure the government will be a model for all to follow in that vein. As for the Senators outburst, it may be due to being around too many liberal Democrats for too long. They have not aquitted themselves too well in public either…what a mess we are in.

Why should republicans have to sit quietly while being called liars by the president. I respect Rep. Joe Wilson for having the courage to defend himself using the same words used by the president. It’s unfortunate that such disrespect occurred, but it was started by the president.
I regret John McCain did not have the courage to make this point.

Specific language must written into the bill to limit benifets to citizens and provide for enforcement. If those provisions are not made then illegal aliens and other non-citizens will receive care at taxpayer expense. There is no way to prevent it. The President knows that so yes he lied.
Rep. Wilson needs to understand the meaning of civility and propriety. He should not interrupt the president’s speech even if the president did lie. You know, I’m picturing the whole thing now. Big ol construction accident in Los Angeles. Dozens of ambulances that pick up everyone. Some Republican at the hospital entrance deciding who gets treatment. Are they just gonna put an illegal immigrant disposal bin outside the entrance? Or perhaps a quick bus trip to Mexico – just dump em on the border. And then after the eight hour shift of making sure some lives matter and some lives don’t, the guy picks up his family and goes to church for a pro-life rally.

Sen. John McCain called Wilson’s outburst “totally disrespectful” and said he should apologize. He said there was “no place for it in that setting or any other and he should apologize immediately.”
Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tennessee, denounced the heckling.
Sen. Lindsey Graham said, “The president’s combative tone did not justify a member of Congress shouting out, ‘You lie,’ ”

Posted by: ErnestNM | September 10, 2009, 12:37 am 12:37 am

It may have been disrespectful but this shows how deeply emotional this is. Obama is a smart man but he is moving too fast and doesn’t have a firm idea of how to fund this endeavor. What worries me is that the main problem with the cost of health care is all the staff and lawyers needed meet all the regulations that the government has put into place to regulate health. It is estimated by people I know in health care administration that over 50% of the staff in hospitals are needed to meet the governments demands. That is the REAL problem, not that the health insurance companies themselves are innocent by far, there are problems there as well.
The way I see it is you don’t work and pay taxes you should not be given health care. This is aimed at the illegals who get free healthcare that also drive up the price for everyone else. Sorry, but I’m tired of working my backside off so others can have it easy and not pay there fair share. Everyone has the ability to go to school and learn, some choose not too. So why should those that want to achieve a better life suffer for the lazy.

That’s the problem, AppeaseThis. People think that they’re instant experts on the plan because they heard about it on TV or radio. I had a friend of mine get one of those lying memos (I think it was from Wilson, in fact). He thought that because it came from a Representative in Congress it must be true. I had to tell him what the bill really said.
I’ve even heard people complain that Obama hasn’t been specific enough – that’s because they don’t care enough to seek out the information, they just want to be spoonfed talking points so they can b***** and moan.
Read the bill! Don’t take any politician’s word for what it says – if you’re going to play the expert than educate yourselves.

Wilson violated the “House Republicans’ Stated Rules of Decorum”. It states, “The precedents of the House allow a wide latitude in criticism of the President, other executive officials, and the government itself. However, it is not permissible to use language that is personally offensive to the President, such as referring to him as a ‘hypocrite’ or a ‘liar.’”

Posted by: ErnestNM | September 10, 2009, 12:51 am 12:51 am

“so I agree with Wilson”
The point is not rather you agree with him or not. It’s rather you want the US Congress behaving like a third-world country or a badly-behaved child.
In the military there are a lot of A-holes that are officers, but you don’t get to pick and choose whom you salute. In a similar way we were always told you respect the office/rank even if you don’t respect the person.
That’s the issue here. Rather the Reps and haters can see past their own chance to open their big mouths and behave with some decorum.
Leave yelling at the TV set for sitting in the bar. There are plenty of places if you just have to call the Pres. a liar. A joint session of Congress is neither the time or the place.
Which Wilson must agree with, based on his quick apology.

We’re not Japan, England, or the Philippines. We don’t shout each other down in a joint session of Congress. Especially a guest speaker like the POTUS. Rep. Wilson was not invited to a debate, and if that’s all the self control he’s capable of, SC needs to get themselves another representative. No matter what you may personally think of Obama, he represents us on an international level. This kind of disrespect in a session of congress is an insult to every American. It could even endanger us on a national security level by making us appear vulnerable and divided, our business is our own. You don’t air your dirty laundry in public. South Carolina, get yourself a new Rep, even if it is another Republican.

This lack of respect is typical of these ignorant, antihealthcare, anti-education, anti-intellectual extremists and is right inline with their lack of respect for those suffering and dying because of lack of access to healthcare. Several of my closest friends have died because of eople like this. The imagined fear of illegal aliens receiving healthcare moves him to such an outburst, while American citizens suffering dying mean absolutely nothing to him.
My friends who died were middle class, professional people, mothers, and fathers who died at the peak of their careers.
The money and productivity this country would save, and the entrepreneurship that would be unleashed, with businesses no longer being stifled, restrained, or aborted by lack of health insurance, would more than pay for healthcare reform.

I agree with President Obama’s plan… After all people look at the bright picture here… Your in the USA… Why should we provide insurance to illegal immigrants if they are here Illegally??? They come to America for a better life, then they the ones that should be able to speak English, have to pay for insurance just like we do.

Posted by: Eric | September 10, 2009, 1:02 am 1:02 am

Do you think the news outlets will report this fact along with the multiple plays the out burst will receive. According to the nonpartisan organization FactCheck.org, the claim that the Democratic health care proposals include provisions to provide coverage for illegal immigrants is false. H.R. 3200: Sec 246 — NO FEDERAL PAYMENT FOR UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS
Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States.
Regardless to our personal opinions we need to respect ourselves and others. Obama won as the President and Just like the former President Bush deserves respect. This is a low for all Americans.

Let’s see – Obama is a pathological liar, but I have yet to see anything untruthful attributed to him. On the other hand there were weapons of mass destruction that did not exist; we do not torture, we do torture a little bit, I have a wide stance, Let me tell you about the love of my life Sanford; forged birth certiicate forged on paper created within the last year; death courts that do not exist and will not exist; he’s gonna take your guns you fools; he’s creating a personal army; mandatory abortions on the federal dime – and those are just the lies I can remember late at night. I’m sure others will come to mind in the light of day. So, let’s assume that certain people – often but not always republican members of Congress – have no recognition of what truth might be. Should be an interesting show as these guys fall apart in shame
Sick and injured people must be treated in an ER – must be by law – that would include the nasty ones, the illegal ones and the sick ones. It will include you too if you need it. I don’t recommend ER treatment unless you have had a shotgun injury and need a lot of people to keep you alive. It’s might expensive though.. Now, when my kids lied, the interrogation began. The lies surfaced quickly.

Posted by: Dave | September 10, 2009, 1:10 am 1:10 am

It was very offensive of me to witness Joe Wilson being so disrespectful to the office of the President of the United States. When a speech by the President is given it is very unclassy by a member of the congress to be a heckler and to stoop to the uncivility of an uneducated, hotheaded townhall time in their limelight type person.
I expect more out of our congressmen. No, actually, that is the point the don’t do what we expect. What we want is for them to do the job they were elected to do and that is to do what our citizens need in our country and that is healthcare reform. We need them to get a bill passed and to stop being children and not be hotheaded. Go to work, roll up your sleeves, swallow your ego and do what many honorable, hardworking citizens that are losing their homes and jobs now because of their lack of doing their jobs in the first place.
We need to Republicans to stop being spiteful just for spites sake and be mature.
I am so tired of our elected officials, especially the Republicans instantly contradicting any kind of progress. Stop trying to stop progress and be visionaries, dammit!

The truth really hurts. President Obama set the record straight and put the political pundits, the Republicans and the conservative Democrats in their place. He laid out his health care plan and let it be known that his public option was going into the Bill. Not only that, but he put the scare tactics at rest. I’m very proud of our President. He has put the people who needs help the most above the greed of the insurance companies. His speech was fantastic. As for Wilson, he should resign. He truly doesn’t have any respect for our President. Even if he disagrees with what the President said, his rude and vulgar outburst was disrespectful and it just goes to show you how mentally challenged the Republican party is and has always been. I’ve been watching numerous Presidents speeches for many years and I’ve never heard or seen anything so outrageous in my life. It’s obvious that he’s one of the ones who’s been spreading vicious lies about the President’s health care plan; and I bet you he is also one of the naysayers who refused to allow his kids to watch the President’s speech to the school children. What a sorry bunch you Republicans are. I pity you. Your party should call for your resignation. I know President Obama will accept your apology because he’s a much bigger, better and smarter man than you will ever be.

Perfect example of the loud-mouthed 10% trying to govern the remaining 90%. They should do another poll, I don’t believe the majority is against the Obama plan. Plus, I don’t see the Republicans of Congress complaining about their Health Care, which is EXACTLY what Obama has adopted….it’s NOT new.

So let me get this straight. Republican’s are worried about illegal’s having access to the public option? Even tho is states in the bill they are not eligible they can fraudulently participate or even better they currently have access to the ER and that counts? So that makes Obama a liar? 1. If they commit fraud on their status don’t they have to pay into the plan to get it? 2. Access to the ER? Really? Do they want all of us to show ID when the paramedics arrive or even better do they want them to die in the street???? I can’t believe this is the party Christians choose. Does Jesus really want us to say “F these people!! Let them die!!! Not my problem!!!” I suggest they do some soul searching before they have to answer to their God.

Embarrassing and disrespectful.
Republicans are behaving like a bunch of petulant children. For the record, Democrats were in the same position during the Bush administration. Despite starting a war in Iraq, diminishing our freedoms with the Patriot Act and failing miserably after hurricane Katrina, not one elected Democrat treated Bush with as much disrespect as Joe Wilson and the Republicans did tonight. What Wilson did was disgusting, but every Republican in that room that jeered the President of the United States needs to get some perspective and GROW UP.

How stupid would it be to think it is a public option can be even given to illegals too. How is that enforced in reality? It is just laughable.(They have no social security to start with). How will supreme court allow it? It is just one of the scare tactics used by the republicans.

Anyone who says that it’s the insurance companies who are behind the dissent of Obamacare is not thinking of the entire picture.
Insurance companies are NOT going away. In fact, this bill may GIVE INSURANCE COMPANIES MORE BUSINESS. Now they have a huge population who is on the government plan and they will most likely want to purchase the more affordable “supplemental insurance” to cover the things that government insurance doesn’t. Talk about a huge opening up of NEW CUSTOMERS!
Look at AARP, they are already in the business of selling seniors supplemental insurance to cover the costs of what Medicare fails to cover. And they are HUGE PROPONENTS of this bill. * Just scroll up to the top of this web page and view their banner ad *
This bill will take out 40% savings from Medicare – that’s less money for Medicare to cover seniors, which most likely means medicare will have to cut some services. BUT AARP will be there to offer seniors affordable supplemental insurance that will offset the Medicare cuts.
It’s a brilliant business strategy if you think about it.

Rep Wilson is a perfect role model for the nut-jobs in this country who have perverted our right to freedom of speech into an excuse for rank incivility. Joe Wilson’s act was rude and offensive, simple fact in the context of our standards of behavior.
Another simple fact- there is yet no health care bill that includes or excludes aliens. No bill period.
No version prohibits illegal aliens from access. Each seems to allow loopholes to give them access. Hmmm?
Would it have been reprehensible to call Nixon a liar about Watergate or Clinton a liar about Lewinsky?
Forget about the outburst/ terrible manners.
Issue is: will the final bill cover illegal aliens or prohibit them.
That will define who the offensive speaker was!

I think it’s becoming more and more evident that Obama is losing popularity fast. A few months ago no congressman would have dared heckle him in a speech! He was their darling and golden boy and could do no wrong! I don’t think heckling the president while he’s giving a speech is the right thing to do though. When the president is speaking the congress should let him have the floor and be civil. If they don’t like what he’s saying or what he’s proposing, they can show their disagreement later in their committees and on the senate or house floor with their votes!

The proper unbiased folks have already checked and there is clear documentation in the bill that NO MONEY CAN GO TO ILLEGAL ALIENS. The Liars on the right need to double check themselves before they start this kind of garbage.
I have always considered myself to be a more or less moderate that swings a little left or right depending on the issue, but I am sick to death of the intentional lies and distortions that the right wing is throwing out there about anything and everything the democrats (and particularly Obama) do.
The democrats could vote to dismantle the democratic party and the Right wings would still distort and lie about it to the American people.
The problem is that there are many of the American people who just suck up everything that the right wing says and don’t care what the truth might be.

Barack Obama is the President of the United States, elected with more votes than any person who has ever held that office. He serves all Americans and should be given proper respect.

There was nothing democratic about the ugly outbursts which occured at a number of the town hall meetings on Health Care reform recently and it’s obvious to me that it was instigated by the GOP. The press and even the president preferred to glossed over it as “healthy debate”—-Excuse me, these people could have raised their hands or took thier place in the line at the microphone to pose thier questions or even comment, instead they chose to disrupt the proceedings in a series of rants and tirades. There was nothing civil about that which amounted to nothing more than a vicious spectical.
Oh, and representative Wilson’s behavior was inexcusable!!!

Rep. Joe Wilson is a LOUD MOUTH DISRESPECTFUL FOOL!!! There are American citizens, right now, in SC dying unnecessarily due to the fact that they cannot afford healthcare. Wilson could care less about the citizens of his state or the thousands of uninsured citizens in this country. What he does care about is the money he’s secretly getting from the insurance companies and the lies he and other members of his dying party tells to anyone stupid enough to listen.

Posted by: Stinestar | September 10, 2009, 3:31 am 3:31 am

Our health care system is broken and I can’t seem to understand why my party, the GOP, can’t seem to understand that it needs to be fixed and not just be obstructionists.
I can’t understand why they don’t seem to understand that market forces will not work in our current health care system. When you are sick, do you shop around for a hospital, ambulance service or doctor? Do you ever see non-generic perscription drug prices displayed to allow for price comparison shopping? It’s hard enough to even find out if the doctor you are going to has any complaints against them.
Health care is more like a monoply system where the consumer has little choice in the services they get. I think we can maintain private health care, but it needs to be regulated much as our utilities are regulated in most of this country. This would limit profit taking, reduce doctors and hospital administrative costs, and allow for private companies to run the programs efficiently with some cost oversight.

I am a (non-mexican) minority and I entered the country fully legal, JFYI. I don’t understand why ilegals should not be covered in the bill, do you think that will stop them from going to the ER when they need it and continue to be a burden on Americans taxpayers? – And why not? The country needs these people, who will kill your cows in the slaughterhouses so we can eat at McDs? Who will clean our hotels? Or fix our roads, or replace our roofs? – Americans don’t do these jobs. Heck, I am a minority and I don’t want these jobs either!

Think of the kids who tuned in to watch their president discuss health care only to see a U.S. Congressman yell out at him like a thug “You lie.” This is the kind of dialogue and emotions today’s PalinGOPers are bringing to the national debate. This is what they are modeling for our kids. It truly makes me sick.

I am appalled and disappointed of how so many people including Rep Wilson are disrespecting our nation’s President. He has shown his Constituents, America and the nation how unpatriotic and unwilling he is to work with the President in solving a long-term challenge with health care or anything else. As a mother of five, his outburst says to me that he is rebellious and unwilling to not only work with the President but that he is unwilling to work with a man who is trying do his best for these United States of America. Had this been any other President he would not have done this. Is it because he is black? I’m not playing the race card either it’s his call I’m just asking! Is it because he is a Democrat? Or is it because he is right and Rep. Wilson do not want him to be because you would rather see him fail? From what I can tell, President Obama is someone who is very adamant in helping the United States solve our problems and health care just happens to be one of his major concern.
I say this to all Senators, Representatives and people too…rather than shouting you lie why not make sure he doesn’t lie by getting involved. Get to know the bill that is in the making a little better, better yet get to know our President better (after all he has three in a half more years to go), work with him to solve the issues that Americans care about. The emotions were uncalled for and unnecessary. I challenge Rep. Wilson to get his name in the news another way…be the first to show bipartisanship and cross party lines. Show America that we can work together and maybe even the people of South Carolina can benefit from his efforts and not the lack thereof.
If one of my children would have made such an outburst while a teacher was talking or trying to teach the class they would have been suspended and given a zero for the day. I have often told them and still do till this day, that saying “I’m am sorry”is good but you should not have had to say it in the first place. Sometimes our emotions get the best of all of us and we say things that we don’t really mean to say but as a Senator of South Carolina, a representative for a group of people he should have set a better example for his constituents. His out burst was inappropriate and I cannot be more embarrassed for this country! I’ve often thought about moving to the Carolinas but not now…I would not want to be represented this way. May God rest in our lawmakers heart and their soles to do the right thing and I will be praying for them.

I applaud the Senator for being honest – he should have been applauded – not censored. Illegals have NO rights and that should include health care. The word “illegal” speaks for itself and they should be deported – not given free rein to live here illegally !

I have children show more mental restraint and more respect than Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina. He owes not only the president an apology for his inexcusable actions but an apology to every person of our nation for shamefully tarnishing the cornerstone of way of life which is democracy.

Wilson is correct, the President is lying. Illegal immigrants WILL be covered, because they will NOT be asked about their immigration status. This is just one more step in the Obama plan to make every single illegal immigrant a U.S. citizen. Crime pays as long as Democrats love you and Democrats love criminals.

Posted by: pennbird | September 10, 2009, 5:45 am 5:45 am

If memory serves, Wilson’s flamer is mild compared to what goes on in Britain in Parliament. Wilson probably produced the single best interjection I’ve witnessed in my years of watching these contrived campaign speeches before a captured Congress and nation. It cuts both ways. If the democrats had taken Bush to task in Congress during his joint session promotions vs. being passively indifferent for sake of political correctness, he might’ve gotten the message that he needed to do a 180 pronto. Let’s face it, people have strong opinions on both sides. Wilson’s spilled over in a display of political incorrectness today, but in doing so, maybe he showed all of us what’s been missing from American politics at the highest levels — genuine honest fervor in support or opposition of what we believe. I somehow think the founding fathers may have smiled last night that someone actually was willing to speak up and speak loudly to express opposition. A raucous rebuttal shout down from democrats to Wilson was all that was missing from what is supposed to be democracy’s exercise of free speech.

This senator should resign his post for such disgusting behavior! Don’t illegals get free health care now when they go to the emergency room? Doesn’t having one anchor baby make all in the household eligible for Medicaid?
I don’t want illegals to be covered at all, however any Congressman or Senator who opposes the public option should not be receiving government sponsored health insurance. Such politician is a hypocrite. I have health insurance which is pretty good, but it costs me $800 per month and goes every year.

I agree with the sentiments of the president. I believe the rules that were in place were there not so much for illegals that hopped the border, but for refugees that required care. Unfortunately, in this day and age it needs to be on a case by case basis that illegals get care, and if they get care they must be registered, the process started, or the police notified when the illegal enters the facility. Once again it is a sign of the times when you look at the reasonings for these laws years later.

We need to let these folks who deal in nasty know, nasty doesn’t work, especially when you run down the President of the United States on the world stage.

Joe Wilson has spent much of his time focused on “anti Obamacare” – (check his Twitter statements)- if Obama changes the healthcare system, then Joe will be out of a job. His outburst last night reflects a complete lack of respect, intelligence and a real understanding of the ideas presented by the President. The people like Joe Wilson are not listening – why would anyone vote for him? He has no class.

So if the GOP thinks this is okay to behave like a child during the Prez’s speech, then I clearly see there is no hope for the GOP at this given rate to clean up their act.

Posted by: skooter | September 10, 2009, 7:27 am 7:27 am

To me it is more of a problem that Obama is afraid to tell the whole truth(lying)about this bill than about an outburst. He needed to turn away from his teleprompter and explain how illegals will continue to get healthcare just as they always have….EVEN THOUGH IT IS NOT WRITTEN IN THE BILL. Just tell it like it is Obama.

Posted by: Jo | September 10, 2009, 7:30 am 7:30 am

The outburst from Republican Joe Wilson was not only juvenile, but his comments were not true. According to Factcheck.org, Obama’s plan does not in fact provide insurance coverage for illegals and adds nothing to the current system for this group of people. The reality that illegals get emergency room treatment was instituted by none other than Ronald Reagan, which is fine by me as civilised countries do the same thing for Americans abroad. If you want to target illegals, Mr. Wilson, perhaps you should lay down the gauntlet on the firms that willingly hire them.

here is a novel idea, DON’T TRUST ANYONE IN GOVERNMENT. I don’t care you ‘pull’ for, democrat or republican. Why not check the facts of what they say before voicing your opinion and deciding to go along or against whatever they say. In case you haven’t noticed most elected officials in the US government are lawyers. This isn’t because they need to be to make laws, no! Plausable deniability. Nobody in the U.S. government accepts responsiblity for anything but they all have the right answers to fix any problem. Now what happens after they submit a piece of legislation is out of their hands and they aren’t responsible for any ear marks nor for the outcome of their legislation. They know they cannot be held accountable for the “laws” they pass and their effect on the public. Thank God most of their “laws” don’t apply to me a private U.S. National (and yes this includes the IRC)

Last night, the world got to see the GOP with its signs and shouts trashing the presidency and the nation.

I was always told ‘never apologize for telling the truth’.
This is acceptable behavior in the halls of government of our parent nation (Britain). Why not here?
I guess the big offense was uttering the truth in front of a house full of professional liars.
The sad thing was the gentlemen didn’t stick with his conviction and that his colleagues didn’t have the fortitude to chime in with agreement. Another would-be statesman under the bus…

There should be at least a little respect in everything, however, when Bush was President I could’t concentrate on his speech because behind him was Nancy Peloici constantly rolling her eyes and acting the B____ that she is. Where was her respect?
There should be respect on BOTH sides.

I am constantly and continually amazed by the ability of the Democratic Leftists to ignore problems by their party, and to ignore underhanded and deceitful tactics engaged in by the left, while jumping on every thing the Republicans do.
How do you ignore what is going on in America today? How do you ignore the dangerous people that the POTUS is surrounding himself with? How do you ignore their agendas and past affiliations?
Why do Democrats seem to believe anything Democrats say, without doing any fact checking? Is there no concern?
I am a Republican, but I don’t believe or auto-vote for whatever they say. I look at the big picture, and look at the facts. THEY ALL LIE.
Wake up America before it is too late.

Does anyone know if this guy remained silent when Bush said we weren’t in a recession, or when Bush/Cheney wanted to conquer Iraq over Weapons of Mass Destruction? I must admit, after Bush, I realize that lying is NOT beneath a President or Vice-president.

It is amazing that after eight years of no one checking anything that anyone in the whitehouse did, now all of the sudden he has to explain everything that he does without leaving out the slightest minutia of details.
And Pete is exactly right, illegals are already getting health care at the emergency room and we are paying for it in spades.
Also, the republicans have shown once again that they have no class and that they have no desire to help the President in any way because of politics and racism.
Lastly, the lady at the town hall meeting named Katy with Senator Spector says, “you’ve awakened the sleeping giant.” Honey if you’re “just” waking up after the last eight years then please go back to sleep. She was on the news this morning stating that her concern is that employers can just drop us off insurance if we overhaul healthcare. News flash, “they can and do, do this to us already. It happens everyday. They either eliminate it or make you pay more with less benifits. I work for a government entity and every year we get less.

Nobody with manners of a second-grade child should be allowed in Congress. The GOP has no agenda other than disruption. Shame on the entire party.

Posted by: Uncle Zoo | September 10, 2009, 8:23 am 8:23 am

From disrupting town hall meetings, to the idiotic tirades of Glenn Beck, to this kind of appaling behavior, I can’t understand how the far right thinks this kind of thing is going to get them votes. It’s disgusting.

Posted by: Monique | September 10, 2009, 8:44 am 8:44 am

Disrespect is Disrespect. It’s abhorrent and shouldn’t be tolerated. We are all Americans, Obama is our PRESIDENT like it or not. Respect the office.

The reason that no one can be turned away from an ER is to ensure the safety and welfare of the public to ensure that a possible serious infectious disease won’t go untreated. The question of which bill Obama may have been referring to is irrelevant… the Dem’s voted at least twice in committee against measures that would exclude illegals from one of the bills. It is clear therefore, that there is a desire by those on the left that illegals benefit from this reform effort at the expense of taxpayers.
Also note that in 1856 Rep. Brooks (D-SC) entered the Senate and BEAT Sen. Sumner (R-MA) with a cane until he was bloody and unconscious. “You lie!” seems a bit tame to me. :)
Let’s keep things in pespective, okay folks. I do agree that Rep. Wilson is out of line and his quick apology last night was very appropriate… Should he be censured? If I were there I would probably vote in favor of it, in order to protect the dignity of the federal government (not that they have much left anyway). That’s what I think.

Posted by: Drewbu | September 10, 2009, 9:22 am 9:22 am

I cannot believe that someone would call the president of the USA a lie to his face.Joe Wilson has no respect for the President and he needs to be handle just like an unruly criminal, weather he likes the man or not he needs to be respectful of the office. but that’s a republican for you. when they can’t get their way they cry..How disrespectful of the Republican heckler. Such a lack of manners. He should be ashamed of himself.

Posted by: Patricia | September 10, 2009, 9:45 am 9:45 am

I am so totally disgusted with the Republican Party. They can’t control themselves, are so negative about everything and just want things to stay as broken as they are. Not surprising when you look at who funds them – corporate America. The best move I made several years ago was to leave the Republican Party and tell them to go to hell. Not much in love with the other party either.

Posted by: Pete | September 10, 2009, 10:00 am 10:00 am

What you ever heard of free speech! You all know that all the democrats want to do is spend money and do nothing. And we all know that the illegal immigrants is working the jobs that we can do but are too lazy to do and half the welfare people don’t work because they are too lazy to do it they think that they can just get paid for doing nothing. No I don’t think that it is right if the immigrants do some illegal they don’t get punished for it. But I don’t think that it is right if a black person says something and disrespect the white person and complains how he treated so badly, but a white person who works hard cannot speak out against a black person if they is been treating them.
I know a white lady who has been with a Lunenburg school who gets part time pay and always fills in of the full timer’s everyday and the school never gives her the time of day and always hires people who don’t do their job. And most of them are black there are some who do good job then there some don’t clean she come and cleans the bathrooms and you can go in the bathrooms it does not stink. So you people who work hard and can’t get a job because you’re getting pasted up by the losers who do it halfway done and does it the cheapest way possible. And just because a black child can’t pass the sol test does not mean that we have to lower the test scores so we can have dumb workers in the future.

The utter lack of respect for the position, for Congress and the American people was never more evident than last night. His behavior smacks of the “bully-tactics” we have seen encouraged and promoted by his party.

Posted by: Chickie | September 10, 2009, 10:03 am 10:03 am

Thank you Congressman. Your behavior last night will certainly turn off moderates in this country and finally assure passage of healthcare reform. The only thing less respectfull was watching Eric Cantor texting during the speech. What wonderful examples you are the children of our nation.

Posted by: Leichtman | September 10, 2009, 10:09 am 10:09 am

Congressman Wilson just thought that he was still in South Carolina where they get away with things like that and more. I have been in S.C. for the past ten years and I’ve seen quite a few situations gotten over looked, within this state it’s in the work place, in the schools, in the restaurants in the department stores it’s an epidemic for some. I really guess he thought he was at home and it was okay for him to make a outburst like that. Here they say, what they want and it’s not challenged. I’ve even been told that it’s not what you know but who you know in order to get employment with years of experience. That’s real scary for a person seeking employment in S.C. It’s sad yet its quite true in S.C. and there needs to be a change down here.

Posted by: Shelvee | September 10, 2009, 10:54 am 10:54 am

this whole thing with Wilson outburst and Obama’s calm and rehtorical speech along with this entire country’s political arena is just a big staged act to confuse and create false reality, a sort of brain washing and propaganda by the social elites to make it’s working class to accept the sad fact that most americans don’t have health coverage where most industrialized nations of this world do. and to keep the poor working americans into thinking that this new “for the people” president is fighting for their behalf.. when infact he is just a new puppet.

wow, you’re a super-classy guy, ed! you can’t think of any examples to prove your point, so you just make up out of whole cloth vague charges against the recently deceased Senator from Massachusetts accusing him of falling asleep drunk during the Senate sessions. because in your tiny mind, it MUST have happened!
it’s no surprise to me that someone as ignorant and deceitful as you would rush to defend Wilson.

Dear Joe,
Nice to see you coming to life after 8 years of sleep. You said something about lies–here’s a few you must have missed:
I guess you got those WMD’s,
and Valerie Plame’s retirement checks,
and the transcripts of the billions of emails and telephone calls recorded by the NSA over the last 6 years
and the no bid contracts for billions to Haliburton and KBR
and the apologies to the US service personnel killed and maimed because of George Bush’s directive from the first cabinet meeting on Jan 31, 2001–”Iraq, find a way”
and video Cheney screaming “Deficits don’t matter” as he channeled billions that would have paid for the health care of every man, woman and child in America for 20 years
and the names of those republican hacks he appointed to the SEC who stood by as people destroyed our whole economy and 17 trillion dollars in retirement savings too.
You need to get down on your knees and beg forgiveness for being stupid enough to have voted not once but twice for George W Bush, the man who just about destroyed America. And with your help actually got away with it

Joe – THANK YOU for your passion! I only wish you were in my state so I could vote for you — but a bigger platform SHOULD be in your future…
WHERE do I make MY donation to YOUR campaign…
Thank you!

Just as congressman Wilson was wrong in his outburst, the president was equally wrong in openly calling Sarah Palin a liar. That was bad form, too, and the president should apologize for that just as congressman Wilson should apologize for his outburst. If the president’s health care reform is passed we will soon see who is the liar and who is not. I’m awfully afraid it’s not Sarah Palin!

Posted by: JimVgirl | September 10, 2009, 11:51 am 11:51 am

Mr. Wilson embarassed our country. What has happened to respect. You don’t have to agree with our President but you must respect the office and the man in the office. I also do not understand why the Republicans had to get time on TV last night for a rebuttle. It is time that we see our country as one.

Posted by: Ed | September 10, 2009, 12:06 pm 12:06 pm

While it was inappropriate for him to use that tone, he WAS telling the truth. Obama was lying right through his teeth and a number of people needed to respectfully object.
I can’t believe people are focusing on him as the problem instead of the liar (obama).

Ladies and gentlemen, what you heard was the one brave soul who dared to speak up.
I immediately think of the boy who said “But the Emperor has no clothes on!”
The President is not being truthful.
Videos are available for anyone to watch that show Obama on both sides of many issues, including health care.
Obama has been pushing for single payer for a decade. Last year, candidate Obama promised Planned Parenthood that abortion on demand would be part of health care reform.
Which Obama should I believe?

I feel for Joe Wilson, in a way. Given how the GOP Congressional leadership has been boasting for months about their tight party discipline, this outburst was undoubtedly planned. For whatever reason, Joe Wilson was picked to deliver it, getting the chance to become the new conservative hero (which still may happen).
Unfortunately for him, when the response was overwhelmingly negative Wilson had to fall on his sword and take the heat on his own. Of course, him being from South Carolina, this probably will improve his chances of re-election. What a place that must be, with types like Sanford and Wilson.

Posted by: biilp | September 10, 2009, 1:19 pm 1:19 pm

I am old enough to remember President Kennedy and old enough to remember that he was far more conservative than Democrats today. Obama is a flaming liberal compared to Kennedy. And Kennedy is far more conservative, having more in common with Regan, than with today’s conservatives.

Posted by: Ramon | September 10, 2009, 1:24 pm 1:24 pm

Wilson was stupid for making his remark the way he did. It insults the office of the Presidency.
Of course, I can remember both Clinton and Bush being booed by Congress in such addresses.
However, Wilson was right. Obama is a liar on this issue. He has every intention of giving illegals health care by either not asking legal status or giving them amnesty so they will be “documented” and thus eligible.
Does anyone really and honestly doubt this? Or do you just support this and don’t care to examine the truth.
By the way The Congressional Research Service in a document titled “Treatment of Noncitizens in H.R. 3200″ states: “H.R. 3200 does not contain any restrictions on noncitizens–whether legally or illegally present in the United States temporarily or permanently–participating in the Exchange. (The Exchange being the Health Insurance Exchange).
Any intelligent rebuttals out there?

Disrespect for the President of the United States and by a Congressman of the United States. What a tragedy!!! This idiot just made the united States a laughting stock. There is a place and a time for him to vote, which is why he was elected. But to disrespect the President of the United States on TV while the whole nation and other nations are watching does not say a whole for the REPUBLICANS.

So, ABC–there can only be one liar here. Can you tell me who? Or is it really up in the air–do any/all of the plans explicitly exclude illeagals. If so, isn’t that a story? This seem like reporting 101. Maybe an examination of this congressman’s corporate sponsors might be a clue to his outburst.
And why grant that RNC official annominity? This is a practice of serious beltway journalist which raises alarm bells circa Judy Miller. It serves to protect liars from srutiny, or alow the reader to asses mortives. It is a prime tool of ropaganda masked as journalism.
Say what yoy will of the bloggs (you know they use curse woeds sometimes–gasp) stopping the propagatoin of falsehoods by liars is high on their list of why they became “journalists”.

“Wow, it is in rather poor taste but, then again, has a tradition in democratic republican, or parliamentarian, systems to interject during speeches, especially if outright lies are being told. As long as Obama can get the database, he’ll be happy.”
I would of liked to have read your post and responded to a point you might have made, except that your dumb, as in you lack intelligence, as in, stop posting and go perform actual research, or just stop posting.

Of course the new bill doesn’t cover illegals. Ed is correct in saying they are already covered. Obama is well aware of this as well as Congress. Mentioning it during his speech is just his attempt to sell it to the people who would not support insurance for illegals. The outburst was still in appropriate

Oh wait… He said it in the middle of a presidential meeting? Hmm… Well, props to him from the internet, but… Probably a bad idea, in hindsight.
