GOP Rep. Pence: ‘Disappointed’ in Rep. Joe Wilson’s Outburst — But Obama Said His Critics Were Lying, Too

ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: Rep. Joe Wilson’s outburst on the House floor last night has brought wide condemnation from both Republicans and Democrats. On ABCNews.com’s “Top Line” today, Rep. Mike Pence, the chairman of the House Republican Conference, joined that chorus, saying he was “disappointed” in Wilson’s comment and that his colleague did the right thing by quickly apologizing.

Pence made clear, however, that his disappointment extends to President Obama as well. “I was disappointed with my colleague’s statement on the House floor. I think Congressman Wilson was right to apologize to the president last night. I think that kind of rhetoric is disappointing on the floor of the people’s house,” said Pence, R-Ind., the third-ranking member of GOP House leadership. “But candidly, I was also disappointed when the president said that his critics were lying. I don’t know that there’s any precedent in American history for the president of the United States coming to the well and leveling that kind of an accusation at his critics.” Shortly before Wilson’s outburst, the president said — in a comment widely interpreted as directed at Sarah Palin: “Some of people’s concerns have grown out of bogus claims spread by those whose only agenda is to kill reform at any cost. The best example is the claim made not just by radio and cable talk show hosts, but by prominent politicians, that we plan to set up panels of bureaucrats with the power to kill off senior citizens.  Now, such a charge would be laughable if it weren’t so cynical and irresponsible. It is a lie, plain and simple.” Moments later, after the president labeled as “false” suggestions “that our reform efforts would insure illegal immigrants,” Wilson, R-S.C., shouted from the House floor: “You lie!” Pence said he wasn’t trying to excuse Wilson’s comment. “You know, democracy takes heavy doses of civility,” he said. “I think we all own responsibility for what we say and do, whether we’re on the floor of the Congress or on Main Street in America. So, I don’t want to — I don’t want to blame-shift here. Joe’s taken responsibility for what he said and he’s apologized.” “But I do think millions of Americans were likely surprised by the very partisan tone of aspects of the president’s speech,” Pence said. He also said he was “very grateful” that the president spoke about areas where Democrats can reach consensus with Republicans — but made clear that he didn’t view last night’s speech as a breakthrough. “It certainly was an olive branch, but there were more than a few thorns on that olive branch,” he said. “And the balance of the speech was just one more speech about the same bad plan. And in that sense I think millions of Americans were disappointed with what they heard.”Watch the full interview with Rep. Pence HERE. Also today, we checked in with Jonathan Weisman, who covers the White House for The Wall Street Journal, about whether the president accomplished his stated goals last night. Weisman offered an interesting counter to the condemnation flowing Wilson’s way. “The thing is that this huge wing of the Republican Party is agreeing with Joe Wilson. I mean, they’re probably saying why didn’t everybody do that you know?” Weisman said. “To a certain and very vocal wing of the GOP, this guy is going to become a hero. So I don’t really think they hurt themselves that badly there.” Watch the discussion with Jonathan Weisman HERE.

Joe told the truth and there is no need to apologize to Obama. Obama should apologize to the American people for saying the Health Care bill will not add to the deficit.Who in their right mind believes that!He can add 47 million and cut cost, sounds like the more you add that don’t pay for their insurance the more you save.

in obamas speech last night he spoke of both parties working together to move forward. already we have begun to argue over whether wilson was right or wrong to shout out in the midle of the presidents speech. people wonder why nothing is getting done to reform health care, but are you blind? the president is angry about slanderous lies about death polls and nazi health care systems, just as any republican would be if these claims were levelled against them. we as amaerican people have grown childish, and that is the only way to describe wilsons comment last night. if it was a lie, which it wasnt, shouting it out in such a way only proves that he believes his voters are to ignorant to see this themselves. im not goign to tell any of you how to feel, just put yourself in the presidents place. i for one would have been furious that my one speech to congress a year had been tarnished by such crude remarks. who knows whether or not Obama will prevail in the end, whther or not he will fix health care and the economy and end this terrible war. at the end the only question i pose is this. how does this help?

How much money did the same republicans who refuse to sign the health careplan take in campaign donations from health care and Insurance indus. I believe it is estimated at 17.7 Million and who knows where the rst came from. SourceRepublic Campaing Action Fund..Did you see the anger in the faces of Wilson and those around him. The republicans had how many years to do something about health care…What did they do …I wonder what their health care plan looks like, and who pays for it. things are just so unfair…And the only thing most of us poor people can do is vote, and sometimes our votes arn’t even counted. Repulicans showed they are sour grapes….look at the expression on their faces last night. they didn’t even listen to what the president had to say they had thier mind made up , because it didnt’ fill their pockets..Come on people

The Republicans should have been called out as liars! Death panels, illegals getting health care, my favorite mandated abortions. All they have done is lie about what is in the bill. FYI read section 246 specifically says no insurance for illegal aliens.

There are no death panels. Health care is not going to be rationed. Private insurance will not fade away. Illegal aliens will not be covered.
Who’s the liar again?

rep joe wilson is a hero to all freedom loving americans he called out the big government socialistic leftist liar that tells half trueths and trys to talk slick like we cant see right through his agenda. I wish other GOP members would have the courage to do that when they see and hear the garbage the dems are dishing out. the GOP has brought good ideas to the table only to be shot down by the democrats in majority, and they say they are trying to work with the GOP, well boys its time to take the gloves off let them have it, call them like you see them, and fight for our freedoms before we wake up one day and have none.

I’m from South Carolina and the majority of people here need help with our current healthcare programs. Having our Representative call out the president doesn’t help us. Rep. Wilson has very good health care, many of us in South Carolina do not. Isn’t he our Representative!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How fitting….. Mike Pence; one of the rising stars of the Republican party. He DARES test our intelligence – comparing Rep. Jim Wilson’s Uncivil and embarassingly rude act with President Obama ACCURATELY addressing the “Playbook Disinformation” developed and disseminated by the Republican party. Have we reached a point where we can no longer expect ANY REPUBLICAN to be truthful???

I agree with Joe Wilson, call them as you see them! Nancy Pelosi laughed when she heard about the iraqi reporter throwing shoes at Bush. Obama is a disgrace not even in office for a yr., and the country is divided. 29 czars, three had to resign, like to know what thats costing the tax payers? His wife has a staff of 18 at the cost of over a million dollars. Hillary Clinton had 3 and that was the largest in history until now. So left wing liberals get your party under control.Emanuel is running the white house for god sake!

I guesss when Cheney was running the House that was okay. Please! All we the people want is decent Health Care, if it takes a government run program to remedy this then oh well. Funny that a government sponsored program is what the President/Congress/Senate currently enjoy. Why is it blasfemy for we the people to have same said. Surely it can not be that bad, I do not see Will, Pence, CHeney, Bush, McCain or any of the rest abandoning their government sponsored health care for private health care. America WAKE UP-their only concerns is the profit margin for their wealthy friends, not you or me!!!
