Health Reform Opponent’s Finger Bitten Off
There is no question that this summer’s health care reform events have been heated. But now, an event in California has even turned violent, as my colleague Teddy Davis explains below: ABC's Teddy Davis reports: An already ugly health-care debate got even uglier on Wednesday evening when a 65-year old opponent of Democratic reform proposals had his finger bitten off at a vigil organized by MoveOn.org in Thousand Oaks, Calif. "My understanding is that it was a supporter of health care reform who got into a confrontation with a non-supporter and the non-supporter got his finger bit off," Capt. Bruce Norris of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department told ABC News. "My understanding is that the event was organized by MoveOn.org." "There was some kind of physical altercation because they had opposing views, I believe, on this subject of health care," Norris added. "I don't know why his finger ended up in his mouth but it was based on some kind of confrontation between the two." ABC News has learned that the 65-year old who had his pinky bit off is William Rice. The Ventura County Sheriff's Department does not know at this time whether or not he was a local resident. He was taken to nearby Los Robles Hospital for treatment. The Ventura County Sheriff's Department does not have a suspect at this time and does not know whether or not the suspect was a member of MoveOn.org. "It's considered a mayhem which is the removal of an appendage from a human," said Norris of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department. "The crime is punishable by imprisonment for 2, 4, or 8 years." A spokesperson for MoveOn.org, a liberal advocacy group which has organized 355 "We Can't Afford to Wait" vigils around the country, expressed concern about the events that transpired in Thousand Oaks, a community which is located 25 miles from downtown Los Angeles. "I'm trying to get details," said Ilyse Hogue, MoveOn.org's director of political advocacy and communications. "You know us: we don't condone violence of any kind."

Obama Avoids Questions on Contraception Rule
MoveOn.org demonstrators, had aggressively threatened a small group of anti-Obama protesters who were “peaceful people holding up candles and signs.” (Police reports concur that the Obama supporter moved across the street into the group of protesters.) He landed a heavy blow to the face of one protester, who responded by chomping off his pinky.

At 65, the guy had Medicare, the broke govt option for seniors. What kind of person attacks a 65 yr old man? Does the attacker understand the “free” insurance isn’t free, that the IRS will fine him if he doesn’t buy insurance coverage. I doubt it.

The old dude that has his pinky bit off had it reattached and we paid for it.
Yep, he’s on Medicare.
Anti-gov’t health care gray hairs on Medicare just kill me.

” What kind of person attacks a 65 yr old man? ”
Ummmm, probably the kind that does not like it when the 65 year old dude punches them in the face.
You know there is bad behavior on both sides now.
A pro-health reform guy who was over 65, was attacked by an anti-reform guy (in his 50s) who drove his truck up to the group of pro-reform folks, got out, started yelling and when the 65 year old called him a name the 50ish anti guy attacked the 65 year old pro-reform guy.
People are nuts….at least none of these folks were packing heat….yet.
Everyone needs to just chill out and stop being so nutso with the “I want my country baaaccckkkk” stuff.

I live in a small town in Indiana. It is almost comical what Obama supporters will do!!! — At our town meeting, there were a several “residents” at the meeting that piled into two cars with ILLINOIS license plates. I noticed this because one member of the group actually confronted me to ask us why I didn’t like President Obama. He admitted he was from Chicago, professing that in Chicago they have more “control over corruption” than we have here in Indiana! Tooo funny!!!!

“The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department does not have a suspect at this time and does not know whether or not the suspect was a member of MoveOn.org.”
Find who did it and lock them up (they MUST have a lot of witnesses – this was at a vigil and I doubt the guy waded in alone). And I’ll try not to be cynical about this being just another Ashley Todd – losing a pinky is pretty serious.

MoveOn, has taken many positions I cannot support, and it is unfortunate that the liberals cannot discuss issues without violence.
What truly amazes me, is that people actually think if the government pays for it, that it doesn’t cost them anything.
In actuality, it costs as much as it did before……plus……all the waste and fraud associated with government programs.
There are no free rides. If someone gets something for free, someone else has to pay for it. That usually means the middle class pays for the poor…always.

According to one account, a man was wading through the counter-protest to get to the MoveOn side, when the 65 year old confronted and hit him. In response, the man who was hit, identified by one witness as “pro-reform,” bit off the other man’s finger. Neither person was identified.
According to KTLA-TV, the elderly man took his detached finger to a local hospital for medical attention.
1. the elderly (young enough to start a fight) punched first.
2. the government plan (medicare) worked very well for the opponent of reform.
funny, ironic, or shamefull

Politics in this country is merely one indication of how morally bankrupt American society has become.
The U.S. is more religious than other industrialized nations and has much lower levels of social justice or even the rule of law.
Maybe the U.S. would have fewer problems if it had fewer holier-than-thou, self-rigtheous, religious nuts in this country. Amazing how the religious political party in this country is even more morally bankrupt than the party in power.

MoveOn’s “We can’t afford to wait” slogan is so highly ironic to my Canadian eyes. My mom found out she has cancer about 2 weeks ago. She doesn’t know what kind, how bad or her treatment plan. Instead she waits, waits, waits to hear from some office that her file hopefully lands in.
How long are the MoveOn folks willing to wait to find out their cancer treatment plan? I guess their plan is to chew on their doctors finger until they get the answers they need.

I have to admit this is bad behavior on both sides, but the GOP fear mongering that has been going on is what breeds this kind of thing …. it makes both sides frustrated.
It reminds me of the election & some conservatives at John McCain’s ralley’s had so much mis-information about Pres Obama. During the election it was all about name-calling (true or not) by that pit-bull VP candidate.
I think it is GOP stratedgy to keep people confused & they don’t care about health care reform – they just want something not to work out for Pres Obama …. JMHO.
I wish both parties could work something out on health care but I don’t see it happening. There is so much (again) mis-information out there that gullible people believe.
It’s a shame ….. we need health care reform.
I also have to laugh at medicare recepients raging against gov’t health care.

Just imagine how convenient it will be for thugs and aggressors to get care for their battle wounds when we have healthcare paid for by the taxpayers. I can see it now, lines will form after gang battles and the fight for services will just add to the drama. Also, can anyone imagine how the risk taking in this country will increase now that papa govn’t will cover all the costs of screwing up and hurting yourself. I think I’ll take up sky diving. Reminds me of the increase in ‘accidents’ when CA passed mandatory auto insurance. I wish the govn’t would require everyone to have to purchase services in my industry. The interview spent all of 10 seconds on the story and the rest of the time on how incredible the health care plan will be. Why won’t the media report the facts. There is no plan and we are being asked to support legislation that is not even finished. 1000+ pages and it appears only to be a outline. Try to implement that w/o a whole new agency and thousands of new workers that will handle your issues with efficiency and grace.

No one thinks that health care reform won’t cost anything. We just think it will be cheaper and more balanced than as it stands now. And that the health insurance industry will be what it’s supposed to be. A not for profit organization. And if we get cancer, perhaps we can get chemo and possibly survive and still keep our health insurance. And not bankrupt our family in the process.

This is what happens when you introduce Saul Alinsky thug tactics into a nation already bedeviled by Karl Rove’s electoral cynicism. OUR nation needs OUR President to stop forcing a radical agenda on a nation already suffering from the “imbalance and frustration” (Ike quote) of eight years of Bush. We are insulting the very foundation of this country from top to bottom. This President needs to grow up and restore balance and moderation to this country, not force upon it the most radical elements of the old 1960s and 1970s playbook on Social Engineering.
I’ve always been proud to be an American, but we may be rapidly destroying it and our President is leading in our destruction. May God have mercy on this nation and its disgraceful, decadant, greedy, and excessive behavior.

Just one comment…WHY DOES EVERYONE THINK MEDICARE INSURANCE IS FREE? Medicare B Premiums are deducted from Social Security Checks, plus Seniors who have worked hard and paid into the system for all these years deserve their Medicare. Not only that there is a deductible that must be paid every year as well, then co payments on some illnesses etc.
(and on another note if someone gets in your face and doesnt back off then if they happen to get punched in the face it appears to me they deserved it, (not that it was right but it WAS deserved) whereas FELONY Mayhem was NOT

I love the comments who blame this incident on the victim or better yet the republicans (their fear mongering results in this kind of behavior). Why not blame George Bush too. Blame anyone except the person who committed the crime. That’s what it’s come down to in this country … it’s never the criminal’s fault. In this case, he’s just a victim of evil GOP fear-mongering … can’t hold him responsible.

older americans especially, have bought into the rugged individualist viewpoint (focus on “me and mine”) of corporate interests (against reform) which is interesting, considering those over 65 already have “socialized” medicine; it’s called medicare. even though only the top 5% would be taxed, Neo-Cons have the masses convinced that taking care of people takes away freedom. it’s warped. obama has been routinely called a racist by glenn beck (“obama has a deep seeded hatred of white people”) and sean hannity. US media covers conservatives yelling at town hall meetings, yet NO mention has been made by ANY major news networks about the 350 candlelight vigils held across the country yesterday supporting reform.

The only thing which came to mind was whether there was any warning. Isn’t that sick when you look at verbiage over sensibility? I guess it is just a slow day. Whether this story is true or not, it might depend on whose side of the issue your opinion rests. Get well soon.

Miguel … what are you talking about? The holocaust museum shooter was not a conservative – he was an avowed socialist who also had some conservative commentators as his intended targets. If anything, he was a liberal looney, not a right-wing one.
What “conservative wannabes” have shot cops “because the government was coming to take their guns”? I live in a state where gun rights were recently EXPANDED not reduced. And that’s the trend these days as statistics tend to show that expanded gun rights results in LOWER crime rates.
Most of the outrage over this health care reform bill isn’t over government run health care (although public option is one aspect) most people are concerned with the MANDATES proposed in both the House and Senate Finance proposals.
Lastly, how does this finger biting incident have anything to do with conservatives? All we know is that the victim was opposed to reform and his finger was bitten off allegedly by someone in favor of reform.

I WILL TRY TO EXPLAIN MEDICARE ONE MORE TIME.
MEDICARE DOES NOT COVER A PERSON FULLY.
WHEN ON MEDICARE YOU MUST PURCHASE A SECONDARY HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN.
MEDICARE SETS THE ALLOWABLE AMOUNT BUT DOES NOT PAY THAT AMOUNT.
YOUR SECONDARY HEALTH INSURANCE PAYS THE BALANCE OF THE ALLOWABLE AMOUNT.
NOT ONE PENNEY MORE.
YOU MUST ALSO PURCHASE A DRUG PLAN THROUGH A PRIVATE CARRIER OR MEDICARE.
MEDICARE DOES NOT COVER DENTIAL.
SO THOSE OF YOU THAT THINK MEDICARE IS FREE DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE PROGRAM.
IN ORDER FOR ME AND MY WIFE TO KEEP THE SAME COVERAGE THAT WE HAD WHEN I WAS WORKING COST ME $550.00 PER MONTH PLUS DEDUCTABLES FOR MY PRIVATE CARRIER.
MEDICARE COST ME $96.40 PER MONTH.

The MoveON guy crossed the street to confront the other protesters. An argument ensued, of course.
BTW, to the guy who says he can’t afford insurance…the IRS will tell you what you can afford and fine you accordingly if you don’t buy an acceptable insurance plan. That rule is in the present house plan. Coverage is not free in this bill. Your present choice of not paying for insurance will be taken away.

This isn’t the first time the obama nuts have turned to violence and it wont be the last. They don’t seem to be able to make their point, argue against legitimate points and ultimately just start screaming ‘racist’ or ‘un-American’ or some other ignorant garbage and start pushing and shoving.
We know the DNC has sent union thugs, from out of district, into our districts to try to silence us… though it’s not working.
One wonders, the dems have had control of Congress since 2006, they managed to get a naive, foolish and completely over his head rookie into the White House but inexplicably the Republicans are ‘blocking’ their legislation… how?
Then add in that Obama, the dems and their surrogates have outright attacked the American people who have dared *gasp* to exercise their right to free speech and to let their representatives know how they feel about the massive over-reaching and spend spend spend policies that Obama has pushed through. Legimiate questions, legitimate concerns (not too mention the fact that much of this legislation goes against everything this country stands for) all meant with ‘racist’, ‘hate filled’, ‘evil mongers’ or ‘paid mob’ and lets be clear here – The majority of Americans do not support a public option (ie. government intervention and control) yet the democrats, MoveOn, the DNC, etc. just keep pointing fingers and calling names… but they’re still the ones resorting to violence.
This is why the dems rarely have power for long. They always over-step their authority, they always try to put gov’t where it doesn’t belong.
Honestly, I’m glad to see ABC actual report this, and rather factually at that. This is a new trend for ABC since they’ve been all but Obama’s official mouth piece since before he slithered his way into the White House.

Even if its true that the 65year old punched someone, he still doesn’t deserve to get his finger bitten off. Violence met with Violence does little good.

One of the first things the right-wing does is toss facts out the window. The old fart punched the younger man first. I don’t care what the age of a person, if he/she punches me, I’m going to deck them. The young man was also surrounded by right-wing zeolots who have proven again and again that they will stoop to nothing in order to get their way. The irony is the guy protesting against government health care has Medicare and that is GOVERNMENT HEALTH CARE. Duh!
When the story finally gets told, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that the younger man was a right-wing plant.
Posted by: algwriter | September 3, 2009, 6:38 pm 6:38 pm
Algwriter? What? How can you claim that the old man punched the younger guy first? Where in the world do you get such nonsense…non of the article I read claim such nonsense. But is even funnier, after claiming that the older man punched first (ignoring the articles that state the younger Obot crossed the road, and singled out this poor old man)then you go on to claim that you wouldn’t be surprised that the young Obot thug wasn’t a right-wing plant? And these statements make sense to you?
Posted by: PotatoeGater22 | September 3, 2009, 6:46 pm 6:46 pm
Why are the Obots so dishonest and violent—seriously tracking down an elderly man and then biting his finger off is just sick.
Posted by: PotatoeGater22 | September 3, 2009, 6:51 pm 6:51 pm
The guy was about 70 and the obama lover attacked him and grabbed him before he was socked. He purposely targeted the old man because he was a coward looking for a fight. This would have been on the front page for a week if the animal wasn’t an obama lover.

All the pushing and biting in world will not stop this healthcare reform from happening, it will happen with the public option.
Posted by: we'r1 | September 3, 2009, 6:54 pm 6:54 pm
Algwriter, so in your mind, if a person punches another person, the hit person has the right to commit an even more violent act? Person A hits person B so Person B has the right to bite off Person A’s finger. Sorry, but society can’t function like that. We have rules and laws. If Person B is assaulted, he reports it to authorities — that’s what the police and the courts are for.
And if the biter really was “surrounded by right-wing zeolots who have proven again and again that they will stoop to nothing in order to get their way” isn’t is amazing not one of them stopped him from getting away? Think about it for just half a second …. finger biter surrounded by a group of probably gun-toting zealots, yet not one of them stopped him from going on his merry way after he committed his crime. Hmmmm. Something doesn’t add up.

As the IRS should fine anyone who does not have insurance. You have your registration suspended if you don’t have auto insurence. People who go to the hospital without insurance leave the debt on other tax payers. Did YOU know that? Doubt it.

On other sites it claims the anti attacked the pro and they went down on the ground. Tho this doesn’t excuse biting a finger off. About all I know is as a female I sure don’t get why grown men have to act like this really. They both sound like a couple of peaches.
Posted by: secondlook | September 3, 2009, 7:32 pm 7:32 pm
Hmmmmm, this story is sounding kind of fishy. Kind of like the finger in the Wendy’s chili story. I mean “how do we know” that someone bit his finger off? How do we know he didn’t cut his own finger off sometime before or during the event to try and make a ‘case’ against the reform supporters?? I’m just saying, don’t jump to conclusion that this 65-year old zealous man is telling the truth. I have seen some of these people that are at the opponent rallies, and all I can say is ‘CRAZY!!!’

About 100 demonstrators in favor of health care reform had gathered on a Thousand Oaks street corner for an event organized by MoveOn.org. About 25 counterdemonstrators gathered across the street. Ventura County sheriff’s spokesman Eric Buschow said a confrontation erupted after the BITER CROSSED from the MoveOn.org side of the street to the counterprotest, where Rice was standing.A loud scuffle ensued, punches were thrown, and the tip of Rice’s finger was bitten off, Buschow said. The BITE(chicken)FLED before authorities arrived. He could face felony mayhem charges.—This is from the Associated Press (AP). I inserted the CAPS and CHICKEN part.

Rice was treated at Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center. The top joint of his pinky, including his whole fingernail, was severed, hospital spokeswoman Kris Carraway-Bowman said.
She said his treatment was covered by Medicare. —IN MYother post it should have been “The BITER (chicken) FLED before authorities arrived.

Gee! I hope that MoveOn.org did not sponsor the finger biting removal. I also hope all California Wendy’s outlets will closely monitor their chili orders. Also, when the guy short one pinky ends up at the local ER, I hope he is completely satisfied with the services. Will his insurance company cover the loss (pun intended)? For sure, he’s on Medicare . . .

Eventually, this current mess will escalate to a near civil war. The military will have to take over. I wonder what side they will come down on? Maybe some people should do a little research on the political philosophy of the vast majority of the military and police around the country. It could get ugly for one side of the equation.
Posted by: The Watcher | September 3, 2009, 10:29 pm 10:29 pm
I can’t figure out who started this. I did just hear missing pinky guy say “I threw a second punch, and my fist landed in his mouth, and that’s when he bit off my finger.” This sort of reads this guy threw two punches and then the finger bite.

Moveon has sunk to the lowest of levels with civil discourse. If you don’t agree with them – they hate you. This man is an example of the hatred they have for people who disagree with them. Beware.

The 65-year-old man was on TV news. He did not get to have his finger re-attached because the doctors told him that the germs from a human bite makes it an almost zero success. He said if the biter is caught, he chooses not to sue

i think it’s funny when someone describes anti-obama people being peaceful when they’re the ones screaming at the top of their lungs at what is supposed to be town hall meetings and bringing guns to those events as well. those guys have been getting very aggressive with others. wow. that really sucks someone had to defend themselves against some old fool by biting off his finger. what the heck was that guy doing sticking his fingers in someone else’s face?

The whole thing is ridiculous. The Pres. should just get what he can and when the health care system in this country crashes (and it will-if not reformed) rightly blame it on the repubs and say “hey, we tried..twice”. I especially find the argument humorous when a right wing talk show-er starts critiqueing other countries health care systems as if those countries’ citizens are pining for our system. Crazy, just crazy.

Moveon will do anything to push their agenda . health care has been their agenda since the primaries .. my question why was the guy from Moveon in with the opposing side? I would say the only reason to start trouble and make Moveon’s point about us that oppose this health care bill right.. go read moveon’s website .. they are all about starting trouble as long as it helps their cause.. that is how they operate ..

So typical that the whatever the left accuses the right of doing – they’re actually doing it themselves. What amazes me even more are the apologists who will make excuses for this idiot. Didn’t you all teach your toddlers that biting is not acceptable behavior. The guys probably rabid.

The whole incident is so silly. Whatever happened to freedom of speech? Obama and is crowd claim to be for the people and wanting change. His crowd are not for the people. They are for cramming issues down the throats of those who oppose them. They are into name calling. They are into sneaky tactics to get what they want, i.e. bringing people in by the van load to vote for him- literally. Not a one of them was made to show identification and did not even know how to use the voting machine. The people that voted, well, shame on them. The people that brought them to the polls are traitors to the US snd should be locked up. The change idea is not what Obama or his crowd really want. What they want is control to make this country a retro USSR.
Freedom of speech is and has been taken away from the US. It is so funny that many immoral situations are allowed to have all the free speech they want. Those of us who believe in doing the right thing based upon Bibilical principles, YES BIBLICAL, are being penalized with no freedom of speech.
Biting a finger off? That is definetly cramming a finger down the man’s throat to get what Obama wants.

Obviously the finger was bitten off when he had hold of the other persons face and the finger was in the mouth. Otherwise a damaging hand hold would be required or order to achieve the same affect. Often happens in sports like rugby, where one player shoves their hand to forcefully into the other players face, and a loose finger is pushed into the mouth, in the heat of the moment the victim of the face grab bites down and, digit gone.

Isn’t it interesting that the anti-health care bill people only yell, shout, demand their congressional people read the bills and hold up signs. It took the supports of health care showing up for violence to start. A female supporter slaps the face of someone against it. Several SEIU union memebers along with someone from the printed press attacks someone passing out bumper stickers and flags and now a moveon mindless minion biting off the finger of someone against the bill. Guess the WH should be proud. The mindless supporters showed up and gave “twice as hard back” just as the WH demanded.

I CAN’T BELIEVE THE LIES AND MISINFORMATION THE RIGHT WINGERS ARE USING TO STOP THE HEALTH CARE REFORM. JUST LIKE BUSH LED THEM ALL TO SLAUGHTER IN THE IRAQ WAR…THEY SAY THEY ARE CHRISTIANS YET THEY WILL DO OR SAY ANYTHING TO GET THEIR WAY. I’M A CHRISTIAN AND I ACTUALLY READ AND GO BY WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS…NOT LIKE THE RIGHT WINGERS THAT CLAIM TO BE CHRISTIANS AND ARE FOR LYING, CHEATING, WHATEVER IT TAKES TO GET THEMSELVES IN POWER. IF ANYONE WILL HELP THE NEEDY, THE ELDERLY AND THE HANDICAPPED IT WILL BE PRESIDENT OBAMA. BUSH LEFT THIS COUNTRY IN A MESS AND COULD CARE LESS ABOUT THE UNFORTUNATE…MONEY, MONEY MONEY…THAT IS WHAT THE POWERFUL REPUBLICANS ARE INTERESTED IN…NOTHING MORE. START THINKING FOR YOURSELVES…. QUIT LETTING LOW LIFES LIKE RUSH LIMBAUGH GLENN BECK LEAD YOU TO SLAUGHTER. EDUCATE YOURSELVES…STOP LETTING THE POLICIES OF THE BUSH ADMINISTRATIONS FEAR TACTICS MAKE YOUR DECISIONS…

My pinkie, my pinkie, my kingdom for a pinkie but I guess he has that terrible Medicare a “Single-payer health care insurance” what a hypocrite. Did the little pinkie cry “Wee-wee-wee!” all the way home? It real should have been his right pinky finger that would have been a better story. They are haters not debaters.

When politics turn violent, it’s time to try something else. Polarization of the political parties solidified during the past few years. And the ugliness has spread to the American people thanks to the toxic rhetoric, some of it parroted by idiots in these blogs. Time for term limits for Congress. Fresh new blood might help. It certainly could not hurt it any more than the entrenched, bloated politicians do now.

If the right=wingnuts, and “against anything the president does, racist” was so “peaceful”,,,,,why was his Finger so close to someone’s Mouth? If someone was that close to me, angry and red faced, I would have beat his “arse too”, let along bitten his finger OFF!

That video says that it was the supporter of the current health care reform who got his finger bitten off:
“A supporter of health care reform got into an altercation…a fight with a non-supporter of health care reform and got his finger bitten in this fight.”
Did nobody else notice that?

Quite frankly, I’m sick and tired of these right wing psychotic freaks! The old guy that got his finger bitten off benefits from medicare. He got what he deserved. They just want to stop Obama! All Americans need access to affordable health care. In the end, Obama and the Dems will deliver.

Bots, since when has it ever been ok to bite off anyone’s finger much less an elderly man. Those of you stating he deserved it for opposing Obama or that he gets Medicare so no problem are coming across as bizarre.

Get it together ABC! Your video attachment on this article reports that it was the Liberal Pro health care demonstrator that got his finger bitten off when in fact HE is the one who did the biting. At least George got it right. The Obama cult strikes again. Pathetic and unprofessional. You should correct yourselves on air to be fair and unbiased.
