Michelle Obama: International Hostess
ABC NEWS' Yunji de Nies Reports:The First Lady is getting ready to roll out the red carpet for her international counterparts. Tomorrow, she heads to New York to watch the President's United Nations General Assembly address. Later that day, she'll attend lunch hosted by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's wife, before she and the President host a reception for Heads of State and Government that evening.
But the real work comes Thursday, with the start of the G20 Summit in Pittsburgh. She and the President welcome the leaders and their spouses at the city's botanical gardens. That evening, she hosts a spouses dinner at Rosemont Farm, the estate of Teresa Heinz, Senator John Kerry's wife. Mrs. Obama has advocated for eating locally grown foods and so the dinner will feature produce and livestock from the farm.
"My family and I hold Rosemont Farm close to our hearts," said Mrs. Heinz in a statement released by the White House, "I look forward to sharing our Farm with our honored guests from across the world and am thrilled to have the opportunity to show them the natural and local beauty Pittsburgh has to offer."
The Pittsburgh Philharmonic Orchestra's Jazz Trio will also be on hand to entertain the group.
On Friday, Mrs. Obama will bring the spouses to the Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts School, for student performances, and entertainment by professional musicians including Yo-Yo Ma, Trisha Yearwood and Sara Bareilles. The group will tour and lunch at the Andy Warhol Museum, which will conclude with an opening of one of Warhol's sealed time capsules. Warhol created hundreds of time capsules and the White House calls the opening of one of them, "a chance for modern history to spring to life before the eyes of the First Lady's international guests."
The First Lady heads to Copenhagen next week to make the final presentation in Chicago's bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Given her direct access to so many leaders and their spouses this week, she will undoubtedly use her role as hostess to advocate for her home town a few days early.

You know, I’m fine with the “eat locally” movement.
But there is something hilarious about world leaders and their hundreds of support staff traveling from all corners of the earth to New York, then traipsing to Pittsburgh to purposefully eat locally grown food.

MayBee, you misunderstand why they are getting together at the U.N.
The visit to the farm is just a bit of entertaining while they are in the area. Every time our leaders visit other countries the same thing happens, they are taken to point of interest in those countries and wined and dined. Maybe you never read about Bush’s trips and how he was entertained?
I’m glad Mrs. Obama is able to keep the focus on the importance of locally grown foods. It is important to reduce oil consumption, it means healthier eating as fresh food is richer in nutrients, and as well it ensures local farmland remains viable, rather than paved over for development. Like my grandpa said, they aren’t making any more farmland, once it’s gone, it’s gone.
Hopefully these world leaders and support staff will think a bit more about setting the example of encouraging local eating back home, if it isn’t already done.

Yes, I’m sure the leaders of India and China need to have a talk with their people about eating locally.

Maybe Mrs Obama should tell her husband to turn the water back on in the California orchards where so many people are out of work (unable to farm), and standing in food lines for no reason but a small fish!!!

I saw photos of Queen Rania and Carla Bruni (Mrs. Sarkozy) in New York at the Huffington Post. Both very elegantly and professionally attired.
I wish Michelle Obama would take note.

MayBee – Maybe you didn’t read the article closely enough. World leaders will be at the UN in New York, then in Pittsburgh for the G-20 Summit. They are NOT “traipsing” to Pittsburgh just for local food.
It is not just MayBee that does this selective reading – somehow conservatives don’t process information the same way normal people do. Almost as if it isn’t real if it hasn’t been said by Limbaugh, Hannity, O’Reilly, or Beck.

Interesting.
The last time a FLOTUS and POTUS were this unpopular with the (ahem) “unwashed masses” — both houses were flooded with Republicans to stop them. It looks like we are in for a repeat performance in 2010.

Perhaps you could tell me what was wrong with my statement.
As far as I know, while they are in New York discussing climate change, they are clogging city blocks with their limousine,
but not particularly ‘eating locally’. Perhaps they are talking about how wasteful incandescent lightbulbs are over dinner.
Once they traipse off to Pittsburgh, they will be treated to the ‘eat locally’ message.
A message, I contend, that has more oomph when the people are in fact eating locally, not traveling in large numbers and long distances to get the food.

MayBee | Sep 22, 2009 2:15:46 PM posted “Yes, I’m sure the leaders of India and China need to have a talk with their people about eating locally.”
Actually, MayBee, here’s why we need the conversation about eating locally: The world needs a paradigm shift in agriculture toward more sustainable and ecologically friendly practices that would benefit the world’s 900 million small farmers, not just Agribusiness.
Back in 1943 as many as four million people died in the Bengal Famine. So the world focused on the green revolution: new seeds, new farming techniques, new pesticides. Between the 1950s to the 90s the world doubled average yields of corn, rice, and wheat. But today world population is marching toward 9 billion, crop yield growth has flattened, and somehow, the world needs to double food production by 2030.
Today China has to import US and Brazilian grain to feed its growing demand for pork. Importing grain and forcing farmers to rely on expensive petro-fertilizers produced on another continent may make money for big companies, but it won’t feed 9 Billon.
The world needs to add local, agroecological methods for a new green revolution. Something truly worth planning globally with China and India.
Posted by: greengoddess | September 22, 2009, 6:46 pm 6:46 pm
Oh, so it’s about not benefiting agribusiness.
Look, helping farmers in developing countries is a great thing to do. Young urban Americans vowing to eat only food grown within 150 miles isn’t going to make that happen.
And surely, as much as farmers in India and China may like the help, the idea that food is healthier, better, or more plentiful if it is grown closer to home must indeed sound silly to people who would just like to eat without working so hard for it. Or who live in areas where growing a variety of foods is not feasible.
I’m sure farmers in India and China would, like most farmers, want a bigger marketplace for their products, not a smaller one.
As I said, I’m not against the buy local movement. I think it can be great. But I also think it is a luxury, the kind of thing a nation of plenty comes up with.

Simply put: Worldwide agricultural productivity growth has fallen to only 1 – 2% a year. That is too low to meet population growth and growing demand.
It’s no coincidence that as countries like China and India prosper and their people move up the food ladder, demand for grain has increased.
Last year a 6 year study called the “International Assessment of Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development” concluded that the huge production increases brought about by science and technology during the 1950s green revolution have failed to improve food access for many of the world’s poor.
The study was developed, not by the “silly” Obama Administration, but the World Bank and the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization involved roughly 400 agricultural experts from around the world. It is THIS study that called for a paradigm shift in agriculture toward more sustainable and ecologically friendly practices to benefit the world’s 900 million small farmers, not just Agribusiness. The study is not about ignoring agribusiness – it’s about ADDING local and sustainable ways to feed 9 Billion.
Beginning global discussions about building a new green revolution is not a “Luxury” – it is survival.

Beginning global discussions about building a new green revolution is not a “Luxury” – it is survival.
===========
The luxury is the choice to deny yourself purchases of food because they don’t meet certain parameters. Parameters like distance from field to market, that will make no practical improvement to the lives of one single impoverished Indian farmer. And it certainly isn’t a ‘healthier’ alternative for you.
That type of choice is a luxury to people who cannot eat. That is a limit people from a country of plenty put on themselves because we know there is more food coming.
As I said, actually helping farmers around the world is good.
Nominal, feel-good efforts are just that.
Perhaps the farmers in India would like to start growing more food for their local village. But perhaps they would like to grow enough food to actually export their food and make more money. They need improvements in agriculture methods and infrastructure to do either thing, but one choice imagines a much more limited future for them.

I,too, wonder and worry how much it’s going to cost for Michelle and her entourage not to mention her security detail also to traipse over to Europe just so she can put in her two cents worth about the Olympics coming possibly to Chicago all for the glory of hopefully getting the Olympics to come to Chicago for her husband’s sake. I believe the Obama’s have in his short time in office had more trips overseas and he constantly is visiting state after state. He spends more time away from the White House than he does in it.

I agree with another commenter…if Michelle is so concerned about serving and eating natural foods, why doesn’t she talk to her hubby about those California farmer who have NO water for their crops…all because of a small fish and salmon.

Being able to eat well locally sooo depends on where you are eating. If you happen to reside in California or Shanghai, the two absolutely most fabulous places in the entire world for sampling local fare, you’re in luck. The rest of us need to go a bit farther afield.

MayBee: Promoting a diversified global food chain goes way beyond “feel good efforts” for “local villages”. Putting enough food in 9 Billion mouths by 2050 will be daunting.
Today the only way one farmer can feed 140 Americans is with “Monoculture” – growing vast fields of a single crop such as corn or grain. Unfortunately, Monoculture require tons of fossil-fuel-based fertilizers and pesticides. In 1970, farmers in the Punjab region of India used Monoculture to triple their production using “green revolution” seeds, fertilizers and pesticides.
But today over-irrigation has turned thousands of Punjab hectares into salty soils and created a frighteningly lower water table. Punjab yields have flattened since the mid-1990s. And Punjab farmers, some say as many as 40,000 to 60,000, have committed suicide by drinking pesticides or hanging themselves in their fields. The ever rising cost of fertilizers and pesticides pushed them too deep in debt to recover.
There used to be 250 kinds of crops in Punjab before the green revolution. Worldwide, small-scale, biologically diverse farms are the new hope for more food with less petroleum.
