Mysteries of Pittsburgh

The President heads to the G-20 economic summit in Pittsburgh in a few hours, but not before taking the unprecedented step of chairing a meeting of the United Nations Security Council.

A senior administration official says that China and Russia are on board with the resolution the president will introduce, which re-commits the UN to a world free of nuclear weapons per the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

It’s great to have a President who “steps to the plate” to address difficult issues and unifies with other nations to ensure our safety.
Thank you, President Obama.

Big Gamble:Will it pay off? Abandoning Poland and Czechs, offering up Eastern Europe to Putin, and getting a offer to vote for more sanctions and possibly stop sending s-300 anti aircraft missiles to Iran is large. But, and here’s the big BUT,Iran has bought enough time to go past the point of no return,(Dissidents today report Iran is working on nuclear detonators), so is it symbolic only? Time will tell, however Israel unfortunately can not wait to see. And Obama’s silence on Brzezinski’s comments are troubling to say the least. Did he speak of Hamas, or Hezbollah , U.N. violations in Lebanon with thousand of rockets?Did he speak to freedom loving protesters in Iran who are being murdered? Or did he pander to the anti-Semites and offer reds meat in referencing the loaded term “occupation” so that rose pedals could pave his chairmanship consummation? Well, in this observers opinion if you seek to make love with infected partners your offspring are likely to be mutated. The U.N. is an infected body and slavish subservience will lead to Libertus interruptus!

Ditto. So far, we’ve seen two results of Obama’s UN debut as POTUS that I think are important and steps in the right direction –
Russian President Dmitri Medvedev suggested for the first time that Moscow would be open to imposing sanctions on Iran if the Islamic republic fails to make the necessary concessions on its nuclear program. In the past, Russia has steadfastly refused to impose sanctions on Iran, due to close economic ties.
In addition, both Russia and China agreed to support President Obama’s efforts to strengthen the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

Not really Alyson…
Feb 27, 2008, BBC – Russia says it may support more UN sanctions against Iran if it does not stop some nuclear activity.

“both Russia and China agreed to support President Obama’s efforts to strengthen the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.”
Of course. Russia and China cannot afford to keep up their nuclear fleet with the same proficiency that the U.S. can. Any drawdown will most definately benefit them more than us. However, the nominal yeild of destructive power of a nuclear fleet will not be diminished below a desired point. Meaning, they’ll agree to draw down to a point. That point depends on how many warheads they can stuff into a single delivery platform. It’s complicated but generally speaking, the U.S. sacrifices far more than Russia or China in those negotiations.

Hmmm. I’ve read that they’ve been going back and forth, without committing, and that this was the strongest statement to date, but still not the full commitment we’d want. Unfortunately, don’t have time to find citations and get your insight into that, hopefully later, but there were a few back and forths noted (maybe you know what I’m talking about??)

Also keep in mind something else with Russia and Iran. If anyone thinks that Russia would somehow be fine with Iran getting nuclear weapons, you are seriously mistaken.
Lets put some facts together and paint a picture. Iran supports the Chechnya rebels and islamic autonomy of Chechnya and has even sent support to the rebels in forms of money and arms, arms bought from Russia oddly enough. This is a very sour situation between Iran and Russia. Iran’s short/medium range missiles don’t really threaten the U.S., moreso our allies in eastern Europe and Israel. There is another area inside that range, Chechnya.
In short, Russia has more interest in preventing nukes in Iran than we do… much more.

“, but there were a few back and forths noted (maybe you know what I’m talking about??)”
Oh yes, they always do. They never commit to sanctions to anything because many of the nations that have been sanctioned in the past 40 years (North Korea, Iraq, Iran, Lybia, etc) have had economic ties and/or arms deals. Publically, they don’t want to seem like they are in bed with the “bad guys” in these situations so they play lip service. It really isn’t going to change if Obama is in office, or Mickey Mouse.

2 nations that can be trusted. I’m sure it is on the top of their “To Do” lists…

Go watch TV and see how the left is demonstrating, mayhem in the streets with teargas, maybe the Tea parties can learn from them. If they would do the same, they would get coverage on ALL stations. Just shows that being nice does not get you anything.
