Obama Over-Exposure?

This Sunday, President Obama will be interviewed on five shows – ABC News’ “This Week With George Stephanopoulos,” CNN’s “State of the Nation”, CBS’s “Face the Nation”, NBC’s “Meet the Press” and Univision’s “Al Punto with Jorge Ramos."

It's a rare feat called "the Full Ginsburg." In modern media lore, the first time someone pulled a five-show feat was 11 years ago, in 1998, when Monica Lewinsky’s attorney William Ginsburg made the rounds to defend his client. Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, did a Full Ginsburg in 2007 after launching her presidential bid.

For both Ginsburg and Clinton, Fox News Sunday made the cut, and Univision didn’t. Such is not the case for President Obama; Democrats say the Fox News Sunday audience is largely entrenched in their opposition to the president, essentially unconvincible, and thus submitting to an interview might not be the best use of President Obama's time.

Polls indicate that Americans say the more they hear about the president’s proposed overhaul, the less they like it. An ABC News/Washington Poll last week showed 54 percent of Americans feel that way. White House officials say that’s because Americans are hearing false attacks on Obama’s plan, not reality — hence the PR blitz.

Republican strategist Kevin Madden says it’s too much.

“I think the worry is it’s gone beyond over exposure and now we have what I would call the ‘Obama omnipresence.’ You almost can’t escape this president,” Madden said on ABC News’ “Top Line.” “It goes beyond just cable news and it goes into whether or not you’re flipping on ESPN and you’re seeing him talk about basketball or you turn on the Lifetime channel and you hear what Michelle Obama is wearing this week. And I think that begins to wear on a lot of people.”

But there are others who feel the president could step it up even more to avail the opportunity he has to get his message across to the American people.

“I don’t think he’s overexposed at all. In fact, I think in some ways he’s underexposed,” said Public Strategist Mark McKinnon, media consultant to former president George Bush and presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. “I think he’s one of the most gifted presidential communicators that we’ve seen in political history and telling President Obama to stay off the media is like telling Frank Sinatra to stay away from the microphone.”

White House deputy communications director Dan Pfeiffer says the idea of “overexposure” is “an anachronistic view of how people consume news in this day and age.”

With the audience splitting over hundreds of channels the president could appear on all the Sunday shows, morning shows, evening news programs and late night, and yet, not even reach half of the country.

McKinnon says the administration needs to make up for time it lost in August, when the president’s critics filled the airwaves to rally Americans.

“In politics there’s really no such thing as over communicating, because if you are not communicating, your opponents will be,” McKinnon told ABC News. “If the president stops talking, that means his opponents will start talking. We live in 24-hour news cycles now and if the president isn’t filling the vacuum, his opponents will be.”

I’d have to agree with Madden. It exceeded overexposure a while back. His “omnipresent” description is much more appropriate.
My greatest fear at this point is that all of this perpetual angst is going to wear the country down into fatigue and then to apathy. Apathy is the last thing we need right now.

I believe he’s over-exposed. Like an annoying infomercial playing simultaneously on many channels daily, it diminishes the importance of the presidency.
It’s one thing to use the bully pulpit, another to act as a “pitchman” 24/7.

Go Obama. This President always does best under pressure. Yes, the wingnuttery will never get over the fact that they have a black Pres., but I think most Americans appreciate that Obama is a brilliant leader who is faced with exceptional difficulties.

Unfortunately, this is about all that he can do.He is a Potemkin president with nothing behind the media presentation.Watch “The Candidate” with Robert Redford-the similarities are striking. Watch “A Face in the Crowd”-again, the “satire” is too close to the truth.I am just waiting for another unguarded (unteleprompted?) moment when he says something stupid and unforced-like on Leno about the mentally and physically challenged. The problem is that he BELIEVES that he can talk his way into or out of any situation.Talk is cheap-except for the trillions spent under his “leadership”.

How could that be? With the GOP front and center, with it’s anti-government, anti-people agenda, makingt headlines in every major media not being over exposed?

Thank you Mr. McKinnon. The more he speaks, the less popular he and his policies become. Continue to encourage him to speak more!

Yeah Right.
W was in the media every day, with poor language and grammar, yet nobody ever said anything about overexposure.
Being in the media is a fact for any President.
I would advise those suggesting otherwise to take a good look at their motives.

“Republican strategist Kevin Madden says it’s too much.
“I think the worry is it’s gone beyond over exposure…”
Hmmm, so polls indicate the more they hear, the less people like it – so Republicans are helpfully warning the president against overexposure… why?
“White House officials say that’s because Americans are hearing false attacks on Obama’s plan, not reality…”
Ah. Yes, heaven forbid the President dares to go out there and try to get the truth out. That would gut 90% of the Republican’s whining about health care (I hear the government Old ‘Yeller Board will make you kill your pets to get treatment for allergies!).

Not that I’m some sort of ace prognosticator, but I saw this title (Obama Over-Exposure?) coming seven months ago…

Posted by: tjp612 | September 16, 2009, 9:09 am 9:09 am

I voted for Obama, but if we are having this debate, then he is over-exposed. End of discussion. Historically, the nation tuned in to hear the President speak because it was a rare event. These days his presence, is ubiquitous. I would advise the President to refrain from giving so many interviews to save him from having to do five in one day when he really needs to make a meaningful statement. He is learning the hard way that the Nation could care less about his football picks when there are real issues on the line.

Yes, it would be helpful if the Liar-in-Chief told the truth for a change. That would be helpful. But the truth would sink ObamaCare and his grand scheme for government takeover of 1/6th of the economy. So, he’ll continue to lie. And contradict. Shamelessly.

Dissent based in facts is fine and dandy (you don’t believe deficit spending is justified to prevent a crash in the GDP and associated tax revenue). Dissent based ONLY on his skin color (“he’s just an affirmative action ‘president’”), yeah, that’s racist.
See the difference? Reality based, vs skin colored based. Not too hard.
There are shades of gray, such as when the dissent is suddenly MASSIVELY louder over Obama doing the exact same thing as Bush Jr (or Bush Sr and Reagan in the case of the school speech) – but I see that as just sheep with poor critical thinking skills following hypocritical leaders. Dumb, but not racism.

President Obama has not convinced the majority of American people with all of his exposure because he does not tell the America people the details of the health bill. So far he has not answered the questions that the American people asked during the Town Hall meetings. He hears the questions, from the Town Hall meetings, Cable TV etc. but does not have an answer nor does he validate the people who are concerned about this health bill as well as all of his other radical projects, instead he name calls. He refers to the Cable networks as liars, Republians, etc. He is a great speaker and cannot sell his plans because the people can see right through him, he is transparent! He had said that he will go through the Stimulus bill “line by line” but did not and then he pointed his finger at congress to say bad children. He is a Liar and does not seem to care about the United States of America only his own agenda. Any one in congress that passes any of these health bills that has been recently presented by the president, will not be in office for long. I can’t wait unitil 2010 election!!!!

tjp612 | Sep 16, 2009 9:28:31 AM
Funny, the people directly impacted by laws Obama wrote and pushed through the IL Congress, such as the videotaping of interrogations for serious crimes (lauded by BOTH victim advocates AND prosecutors now, initially the governor had promised to veto it) would think differently.
But color me shocked that you only respect business owners and military commanders. And hold Obama’s work in non-profits in contempt.
During Obama’s three years as the Developing Communities Project’s director, where he grew its staff from one to thirteen and its annual budget from $70,000 to $400,000. That real-world success is the sort of thing that Harvard admissions would appreciate, indeed it was on his resume when he applied for law school. But that was for a non-profit, and non-profits don’t have to ever hire, fire, or make their balance sheet in your world.

“What “fact checks”?”
tjp612 | Sep 16, 2009 9:34:01 AM
Well, you can start with the website recommended by Vice President Cheney during his debate with Edwards. Or the one that is actively tracking how Obama is meeting all his campaign promises with their Obameter. Or the AP, Reuters, etc. Pretty much everyone but the talking heads on Fox. But you know that, and you’ll ignore them pointing out a dozen lies while digging to find the one Obama exageration in there. Just like you conveniently ignore Obama’s actual business experience because you don’t personally agree with his working for a non-profit charity (rather than the $$$ Wall Street offers he could have chased).
Keep up the echo chamber, I have to go to work. Anyone who cares, I strongly recommend googling ‘factcheck’ and reading up on the issues. Both sides basing their opinion on facts would be nice.

Obama has become just another entertainer and many Americans are proudly dancing to his music. And he is now on tour selling his agenda. The President has become the Billy Mills of the White House (sorry Billy R.I.P.) He was recently in Ohio in Lordstown to sell his ObamaCare ideas to the unemployed autoworkers in the region. Then it was off to Pittsburgh to sell his voting bloc with the unions. All the while, there were four Marine One helicopters standing by, Air Force One, a C17 transport plane plus about one hundred Secret Service Agents. The spending is out of control, the deficit is climbing, unemployment is approaching 10% and he wants to be on TV doing interviews. What happened to job creation and working on the nuts and bolts of our economy. I am a moderate and I personally believe that both Republicans and Democrats have forgotten about America. Let’s work on fixing the basics versus spend all our Presidents time selling his 25+ agenda items door-to-door.

“Judge people on their actions and his actions are quickly lowering his poll numbers.”
From a USA Today/Gallup poll released yesterday:
By 3-1, those surveyed say [Obama] is “willing to make hard decisions.”
By 2-1, he is seen as a strong and decisive leader.
Two-thirds say that he can get things done and that he understands the problems Americans face in their daily lives.

jhw539,even Mr, Obama had questioned the real importance of the community organizer experience in practical terms.I still don’t understand why you don’t address the transcript issue in a rational manner-either he had the grades or he didn’t;I would like to see some objective evidence besides ” he was a brilliant student and if you don’t believe it your racist”.As for my personal views on race-I am sure that I work with and interact more with people of color on a daily basis than you do.I am personal friends with one of the foremost civil rights leaders of my state and I knew one of the greatest civil rights leaders in the history of this country. It is precisely why I find this “racist” crap so depressing. To see the scars on people from beatings in the 1960s really puts this “racist” nonsense in perspective.

Is Obama overexposed? hehe. I’ve been thinking that all dog owning Republicans ought to teach their dog to roll over every time Obama says “I”. When every Republican dog in the country hits the floor at the sight of the President, we’ll know for sure he’s overexposed.

Numeros: Don’t forget this one! It’s easy to find statistics for and against, but this one shows what the people think.
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Wednesday shows that 32% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Thirty-eight percent (38%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -6.

Posted by: lfrichar | September 16, 2009, 10:15 am 10:15 am

Based on his exposure: “”"One week after the President’s address to Congress, opposition to his health care proposal has reached the highest level yet recorded. “”"

Posted by: lfrichar | September 16, 2009, 10:18 am 10:18 am

Overall, 49% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the President’s performance. Fifty-one percent (51%) now disapprove.
Maybe Obama should think about working for the people and these numbers would certainly improve.

Not overexposure, it’s bypassing the media filter. Republicans use weapons if mass distraction to keep the focus on peripheral issues.
Facts:
Health care in the US is unsustainable. Contrary to the rightwhacko claims, the US doesn’t have the best medical care in the world. More than 2 thirds of Doctors want a public option.
For ideological reasons, Republicans hate any involvement of Government in anything. For profit reasons, Health Insurance Companies don’t want their Ox gored.
Leave the Republicans in their own narrow ideological chains and fix the mess.

European doctors who work in the statutory insurance market earn scaled salaries set in agreements with the government.
The result is a class of doctors that feels increasingly underpaid and overworked. German hospital doctors earn about one-fifth of their American counterparts — an average of $56,000 per year, as opposed to $268,000 in the states. When negotiations with the government fall short, the doctors behave like any other group of workers in Europe: They take to the streets.
The marches in 2006 were the largest in German history, triggered by government reforms aimed at controlling costs in the national health care system.

Exactly which plan is the white house plan? I have absolutely no reason to think the WH isn’t forming a HCR “plan” based on the reaction of the public to things found in the existing bills and proposed bills… WH, take leadership position and put out YOUR plan, stop explaining how your (super-secret) HCR plan certainly doesn’t include (insert offensive proposal here)…
Stop defending a non-existant plan, start defining it. On paper. Soon. Thanks…

Obama’s refusal to appear on FOX is an indicator of his personal cowardice and lack of integrity. Just as Obama was “the great abstainer” as a legislator (too cowardly to cast votes on tough legislation) , so, too, he is afraid of appearing on a network where he might be asked actual, tough, questions. Note to those playing the race card: obama is not only the first “black” president, he is also the first YELLOW president.

Who cares? While you may disagree with him on the finer points of his methods, his polls are directionally accurate and don’t change the fact the Barry Boy has lost a lot of ground in job approval since 1/21/09 (faster than any president outside of Clinton).

Numeros, Rasmussen polls “likely voters.” Most other poll “adults” and some poll “registered voters.” He explains at his site why the results differ.
From IBD/TIPP:
“Despite his popularity, a majority of Americans (58%) give the president a C grade or below for his handling of the economy. Only 41% give him an A or B. Overall, he gets a C grade. Democrats give him a B-, Republicans a D and Independents a C.”

—A key House committee chairman says proposals President Barack Obama set out in his health care speech are causing problems for Democrats trying to finalize health legislation in the House.
Ways and Means Chairman Charles Rangel of New York says House Democrats would have to slash subsidies to the poor to get their bill to the $900 billion, 10-year price tag Obama specified.
Rangel also noted that the president didn’t mention the new income tax on the wealthy that House Democrats want to use to pay for their bill, favoring a different approach instead. The congressman said “the restrictions that the president has given in his speech as well as the proposed discussions in the Senate has caused us more problems.—

—The Obama administration has privately concluded that a cap and trade law would cost American taxpayers up to $200 billion a year, the equivalent of hiking personal income taxes by about 15 percent.
A previously unreleased analysis prepared by the U.S. Department of Treasury says the total in new taxes would be between $100 billion to $200 billion a year. At the upper end of the administration’s estimate, the cost per American household would be an extra $1,761 a year.—

President Obama’s decision to exclude Fox News Sunday is either childish and spiteful because a few commentators on Fox cable disagree with some of his policies, or he’s scared of facing some challenging questions. I’ll watch FOX since they’ll report if Obama says anything new, which I doubt.
