Obama Says H1N1 Vaccine Voluntary, but “Strongly Recommended”
ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: On the first day of National Preparedness Month, President Obama cautioned that people “not be alarmed” but be prepared” for the second wave of the H1N1vuirus this fall and gave a brief update on the administration’s efforts. “We know that we usually get a second, larger wave of these flu viruses in the fall, and so response plans have been put in place across all levels of government,” Mr. Obama said from the Rose Garden this afternoon, “Our plans and decisions are based on the best scientific information available, and as the situation changes, we will continue to update the public.” The President said the government is making “steady progress” developing a safe and effective vaccine. “We expect a flu shot program will begin soon. This program will be completely voluntary, but it will be strongly recommended.” The President met in the Oval office earlier today with White House Homeland Security Adviser John Brennan, CDC Director Tom Frieden and Secretaries Sebelius, Napolitano, Duncan and Locke, all of whom surrounded him today in the Rose Garden. The President called on every American to play a role in responding to the virus – from state and local governments, to hospitals and local businesses, calling on them have plans in place to deal with increase patients and workers who may need to stay home. “We need state and local governments on the frontlines to make anti-viral medications and vaccines available, and be ready to take whatever steps are necessary to support the health care system. We need hospitals and health care providers to continue preparing for an increased patient load and to take steps to protect health care workers. We need families and businesses to ensure that they have plans in place if a family member, a child or a coworkers contracts the flu and needs to stay home.” Obama also called on individuals to be informed of their risk factors and to take “common sense steps” that can help make a difference in spreading the virus. “Stay home if you're sick. Wash your hands frequently. Cover your sneezes with your sleeve, not your hands. And take all the necessary precautions to stay healthy. I know it sounds simple, but it's important and it works.” The President said that he is “absolutely confident” that his team has prepared well for the anticipated outbreak in the fall. “We anticipate that there will be some issues coming up over the next several months. The way it's moving is still somewhat unpredictable. But what I'm absolutely confident about is that our team that's assembled here has done an extraordinary job in preparing for whatever may happen.” Switching gears, the President Obama also took time to highlight “good news” on the economy, evidenced by the ISM manufacturing report released today as one more sign that the nation is “on the path to economic recovery” at the top of his Rose Garden remarks. “For the first time in 18 months, our manufacturing sector has expanded,” Obama said in the Rose Garden this afternoon, “And the statistics used to measure manufacturing output is the highest it's been in over two years.” The ISM report, a trade group of purchasing executives, said the manufacturing index rose from 52.9 in August from 48.9 in July, and is the first reading above 50 since January of 2008. Despite this, Mr. Obama said that no doubt there is still a long way to go. “I and the other members of this administration will not let up until those Americans who are looking for jobs can find them. But this is another important sign we're heading in the right direction and that the steps we've taken to bring our economy back from the brink are working.” -Sunlen Miller

About 36,000 Americans die on average per year from the complications of flu.
Now, that is approx. 36,000 from regular flu where as the swine flu has claimed 170 deaths.
While the 170 deaths are tragic, do make this huge of a fuss over swine flu, which is another strain of the an influenza A H1N1 virus. “That means that it is just another type of flu virus, just like that causes our typical seasonal flu symptoms. The big difference is that the current swine influenza A (H1N1) virus has components of pig and bird influenza viruses in it, so that humans don’t have any immunity to it.”
The fact is, more people will die from the regular FLU than will they from the Swine Flu. Most people who have died from the swine flu have ALSO had underlying health issues, which as we all know COMPLICATES any other illness one may acquire while battling another illness!
I do find it so comforting that our government cannot get the correct amount of vaccines out on time if this is such an emergency—it just lends to the reassurance that they can run health care so efficiently (do note the sarcasm of course)!
Is this yet another emergency that Rahm Emanuel should not let got waste?

Oh geez, again HYGIENE is the main reason for Flus developments and spread–hence most flus coming from China. Taking a drug that hasn’t been fully tested, is a bit crazy especially since the flu strain that will come out in the winter will have already mutated from the one they are trying to innoculate against. My guess though this innoculation will be about as useful as using the same innoculation from 5 years ago. What a big waste of government spending.

Thanks Obama for not making it “mandatory”. I will decide what I put under my skin. I agree, if Obama uses it and our politicians, I might be more inclined to do so. Same with the health care plan!

Come on right wingers. Sure you look like a bunch of Chicken Littles after your May panic attack about this flu, but don’t let that stop. We could use the comic relief.
“Should have close the Mexican border.”
“Obama Flip Flops Again! He just got done chastising Biden, for saying not to be in confined places if you can avoid them, Like airplanes!. For once, Biden was Right!”
“Learn from the Asian experience. ANYONE, anyone out of Mexico MUST be quarantined and kept under observation for 7 to 10 days. They are the source of this problem.”
“Wouldn’t it be better if the Obama administration rather than keep us informed, actually did something. I have heard nothing of efforts to control the spread of swine flu. Forgive me I mean H1N1. How about quarantines, restricted travel, closures, flights banned, clamping down on travel at the southern border. Maybe Bush should have simply called Hurricane Catrina H25 and it would have all been better.”

I never said theabove comment, but I am pretty intrigued by your blaming this on the “right wingers” because i distinctly recall many of those who claim to be independents and democrats saying the same thing.
Regardless, if you shut the borders you decrease the likelihood of an over abundance of cases.
My argument, 36,000+ ie annually from the regular flu, so explain why this is being made into a big deal and the advocating for a shot for a VIRUS, which if anyone knows mutates like no ones business.
Yes, the injection can help decrease the strength of the virus should one get it, but there is not cure for a virus.

Maybe Nagin should have friggin had his evacuation policy in place like ALL OTHER big city mayors do and taken care of his business like the people paid him to do.
You cannot blame Bush for all of the idiots who stayed behind intentionally anymore than people cab blame Obama if the swine flu gets out of control-which is highly doubtful.
Again, common sense is extinct—somehow leaving town when you live in a friggin bowl below sea level with a Cat 5 hurricane barreling your way means nothing and the consequences for your staying behing, someone elses fault!

Damn straight I accused Obama being an idiot for not shutting the borders down early this summer. The virus was an unknown but reportedly not as deadly as originally reported (its more deadly to Mexicans than to Americans for some odd reason). We got lucky that it isn’t as bad as the experts said and I remain quit annoyed that faced with a potential deadly outbreak of any number of diseases that Obama has already proven he is too stupid to shut the borders to contain a deadly outbreak. BTW, Al Queda In Africa has been playing around with the plague accidently letting it loose which killed several of their people—-if (or should I say when) the terrorists manage to turn it loose in Mexico, we are doomed here. Thankfully, Obama and the terrorists have about the same brain power—-very little so we have been spared the worse of it so far.

No, 90,000 was the potential casualty list from swine flu.
The 50,000 figure appears to be people who have already contracted swine flu.

Three people in my family had H1N1. They were each sick for three days. My daughter had the seasonal flu two years ago and was sick for two weeks. Since I lived with them and did not get it and since they all had it, none of us will be getting that shot. Besides, there are a lot of things that could make me sick for three days.

Let’s NOT forget. In the original stimulus package, Obama wanted $ 850 million dollars for swine-flu preparedness. Maine Senator Susan Collins labeled it pork barrell spending and insisted that measure get cut from the stimulus package.** Where is Susan Collins now? Is she accepting responsibility for the consequences of her irresponsible behavior? I don’t think so.
The same applies to Obama’s health care reforms and Obama’s attempts to stop Global Climate Change. Sure, the Republicans are the first to attack Obama. But when it comes down to acception responsibility for their stupid, short-sighted myopia – where are they? Playing the blame game.
Grow up, GOP. Stop blaming the boogey man. Accept ownership for your own inactions.

So I assume that in the near future we will see a video of how Mr. President and all his family will get vaccinated by a “safe and effective vaccine” that was “developed by the government”. Does this mean the the US government is now taking over Novartis, Sanofi Pasteur, CSL, and GlaxoSmithKline that will be supplying inactivated H1N1 vaccines to the US market, as well as over MedImmune that will produce a live attenuated H1N1? While the government can ask us to wash hands, it is clearly incapable of developing and producing sufficient vaccine without private enterprise.

mamajama: You have certainly came up with the right observation. Indeed, if you check dictionary.com, “socialism” is a system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole. It is up to you to decide whether current US government claim of the ownership of the H1N1 vaccine, controlling its production and distribution by the “community as a whole” constitutes a socialistic approach or not.

My question is ..”Why is the FDA and the Obama Administration failing to recognize safe products such as Ampligen as an adjuvant? Extensive research has been completed, from both an efficacy and pure biological perspective of products such as Ampligen. According to the Department of Pathology, National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Japan, their studies have concluded that the mucosal adjuvant, poly I:poly C12U Ampligen, a Toll-like receptor 3 agonist was proven to be safe in a Phase III human trial. As an effective adjuvant for H5N1 influenza vaccination these studies showed that it produced cross-protection against variant influenza viruses not seen with the vaccines given alone and also considered “most promising”. For years, the United States regulatory entities including the HHS, FDA and CDC have known about this product and watched Asian and European countries make significant progress using it as a toll like receptor for treatment and research of debilitating diseases such as the bird flu, Aids research and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Although the CDC has several times in documented forums have confirmed the existence of CFS, a sister to the more commonly known “Fibromyalgia”, the FDA has failed to address Ampligen’s approval. In addition, for reasons that the FDA claims is “due to staffing issues”, the approval of this landmark product, which the FDA is late by over 3 months, remains in NDA limbo. It is troubling that Americans who can benefit from its availability outside the spectrum of an experimental status are held hostage to regulatory bureaucracy. Its leads many to be inquire if these regulatory agencies are only catering to “Big Pharma” and possibly focusing more on the depth of purse. For over 5 years the FDA has known of findings related to Ampligen and in my estimation should have fast tracked its studies and approvals accordingly. Ref: this article and meeting notes – .
Ampligen may and should be considered as an adjuvant in combination with seasonal trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine thereby providing cross-protective mucosal immunity against Noval H1N1 as it has been viewed in many tests performed for avian H5N1 viruses. Hemispherx and researchers in Asia and Europe consider that Ampligen as beening “generally well tolerated”, with a “low incidence of clinical toxicity”, particularly when compared to the toxicity of the diseases it is used to treat. “No serious safety issues have resulted from the administration of ~75,000 doses IV (most commonly 400 mg) twice weekly for up to one year periods or greater. Animal toxicity studies support this observation in humans with primates demonstrating the greatest margin of safety.”
Its time for the United States to once again take a lead in innovation or we will see our Homeland Bio-Pharma industries go the way our auto and electronics manufacturers experienced in the past three decades….” Outsourced and Dependent”. I invite my opinions to be copied by whoever wishes to submit to other blogs and article comments sections, as we must demand the transparency of these regulatory agencies that all Americans deserve.

The H1N1 flu, also known as “swine” flu, is probably the first real outbreak of sickness I’ve ever seen. I like the idea of Obama proposing a vaccination. This may allow many people to benefit by preventing the symptoms of this flu. On the other hand, however, I am a little skeptical about how much effect it will have on a person’s body. I am not a big fan of needles, so if I decide to actually get this vaccine, I want to know it works. But getting the shot isn’t the only precaution to take. Those who feel flu-like symptoms need to wash their hands often, cover their coughs, or just stay home if they are sick. There is no sense in infecting others when it isn’t neccessary. If it can be proven to work, I am in support of this vaccine.

I would like Obama and his wife and kids to take the first H1N1 vaccine. As I think he is behind all of this. He hates America, the military and the people in America and so does his wife. I don’t care what he says, his actions don’t match what he says.

Today is October 23rd. In our town, a seven year old girl died and in one high school, thirty three percent of the students and staff are out due to influenza. There is NO vaccine until November.
Obama dropped the ball and Americans are dying as a result. Over 20,000 hospitalized and 4,000 dead, to date.
In the meantime, he is jetting around making speeches, appearing on late night television shows, jetting around the globe, getting his family photo taken while family members are dying.
Troops in Afghanistan are awaiting his plan for backup, which they have been pleading for, for months. He says it will come in a “few weeks.” Perhaps around the time, the promise vaccines will arrive….and most likely, far too late for some…
Because Obama has his priorities and that is public relations events and adolescent rifts with news organizations are far more important than human life.
